The Spring 2021 remained as an online Genoa semester. Due to travel restrictions, as well as, health concerns, the Villa did not operate with students and all classes were set via Zoom. As challenging as it can be, the Genoa faculty was able to set and organize a semester with the same level of excellence and distinction it has presented in the past. This book presents samples of the work developed by the students, focusing on its graphic pieces and Studio projects.

Santa Maria di Castello As part of our study of Genova’s historical center and its historical typologies this semester, students will be requested to produce a series of drawings for the Santa Maria di Castello Church and religious complex. One of the seminal works of Romanesque style in Genoa. The religious complex, belongs to the Dominican order, and it is located at the historical Castello hill. The church was erected before 900 AD and is a is part of a medieval composition of courtyards and towers with very important examples medieval art. The study and understanding of this entire complex will give students´ an incredibly rich picture of how the city of Genova developed in its medieval and pre renascence times. This assignment works to both explore and understand the intricate details of the Genovese architecture and its construction system, as well as provide better drafting and AUTOCAD + Photoshop tutorials to students. This exercise has been developed at the villa for the last 2 years and its meant to continue with our graphic collection of seminal Genovese buildings. A specific lecture on this complex is being organized for our first week of classes with Prof. Saverio Fera.

The Genovese Songwriter Library This semester proposes the challenge to design a public building located at the heart of the Genova historical Harbor, which affords both public access to books, media, and an overall rich and powerful public space, as well as a library to study, listen, watch and learn about written words and music, able to connect literature, cinema, television, etc. (perhaps more of an a mediatheque than a library). The nature of its theme, challenges students to think about a building which will require both a closed area, as well as a direct relationship to its external spaces for small music events, connected to the site. Site and building must be though together and as one. This library should be dedicated to a specific Genoese cultural venue that is the so-called Genoese Folksingers School. It grew up in the 1960´s and oriented a lot of folk singers around Italy and it is still recognized as a reference for whoever is involved in popular music. It had cultural links with French folk singers like Georges Brassens and Jacques Brel or American like Bob Dylan and with the so called underground literature of the time, like Edgar Lee Master´s, Spoon River Anthology and others… Historically libraries have been not only the place for education, but also for gathering and encounter, an urban beacon for the community. Libraries as an educational incubator is a space that not only sheds light on conventional means of knowledge but also encourages its users to interact, share ideas and grow together. Project Area The area of intervention for this studio is situated at Genova’s Porta Siberia and the Piazzale Porto del Molo, its front parking lot. This area is part of Genova’s historical Port, a seminal landmark history, an its urban space. Despite the strong historical significance, the target site is today an urban edge serving as a parking lot. Genova, a city which is proud of its long history, its positive urban spaces, its piazzas and walkable areas loses its urban and cultural strength at this leftover edge.
