SPRING 2017 FLUID STUDIO LOS ANGELES 2024 OLYMPIC/ PARALYMPIC GAMES AND CITY LEGACY
Henrique Houayek, PhD
Fluid Studio Olympic Theme This Spring 2017 Fluid Studio investigated the design for sports arenas in the context of the city of Los Angeles and its proposal to host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics game. (This happened during the bid and before LA was announced as 2028 host) The semester work focused on the study and understanding of large sports events, its design requirements and how architects address complex solutions for such large scale projects. From understanding how to design public spaces and its event areas, to the architecture of sports arenas, students were immersed in a hands-on Studio semester project, and were challenged to address the design of one of the LA 2024 Olympic Parks for its games mode as well as its city legacy plan. Themes explored for this Spring semester include: urban design, conceptual development, sports architecture resolutions, in the context of its historical and social conditions, environmental aspects, universal accessibility, new construction materials and technologies. As part of the activities the studio organized a Los Angeles site visit, which included visiting most of the Olympic Bid areas as well as a visit to the AECOM architecture office currently responsible for the Olympic proposal design and conversations with current practitioners in this field to better understand how design such large scale projects.

South Bay Sports Park
Design for Games and Legacy Each group of students was requested to rethink and redesign the South Bay Sports Park for both Games and Legacy mode. Considering that the area will host a large Rugby stadium, a Tennis Center with three arenas, a temporary set of two Hockey fields. And the redesign of the existing Velodrome. Others areas to considered were the spectators’ areas and live site as well as media areas and back of house. For Legacy a new mix use urban block must be considered, moving the existing large parking lot and create a new public leisure area for the city, proving that the Olympic spirit goes beyond the sports events and are all about rethinking and improving the city.
