BUILDING PRACTICES, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
I. Course Description: Overview of traditional and contemporary materials and methods of construction. Combines lectures with hands-on lab experience to examine traditional and contemporary modes of construction, their selection, impact and reuse. Core: ARCH 8721. II. Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes: This course covers the content typically described through Materials and Methods courses in schools of architecture. The title, “Productions + Assemblies”, implies that we will go beyond the traditional examination of materials to understand contemporary building construction as a process in which many disparate materials may be brought together as an assembly. In our understanding of contemporary architectural production you will be introduced to the characteristics of primary materials such as wood, masonry, concrete, glass, and steel. Our primary method and vehicle for exploration will be analyses of specific materials and assemblies and fabricated models+assembly demonstrations. Also required will be specific material manufacturing research as well as a FINAL design problem/competition. The design competition is intended to highlight innovation, exploration and integration of the complexities inherent in an architectural construction. This course will have students participating in a weekly lecture/ seminar session and two studio/workshop sessions for the hands-on analysis exercises.
