HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY, DDA!
It’s been 20 years since Hour Media held its first-ever Detroit Design Awards (DDA)! All of us who work on this publication and plan the celebration are excited about this special birthday. This is the only comprehensive regional competition that features companies in the commercial and residential design arena, inside and out. And it’s now the template for many of Hour Media’s other home-design publications around the country that are launching design awards programs.
Since the first year, we’ve nearly doubled the number of judges, as the stack of entries has grown. The judges’ backgrounds have changed a bit, too. We used to invite a jury from the home editorial/magazine field; today, our judges boast professions that range from furniture designers and textile experts to world-renowned interior specialists. We also change up the categories from year to year, offering not only the usual popular divisions, like kitchens and baths, but also niche areas like butler’s pantries and commercial landscaping. In the past two decades, change has also been a constant in the design industry. I contacted some of this year’s winners to get their insights on how they believe the design arena has evolved in the past 20 years or so. Here’s some of their feedback:
• “We’ve experienced a younger generation seeing the value of bringing a design professional on board. I think many times they grew up in homes where an interior designer was part of a renovation team, or maybe was considered to be an important part of a family home’s decorating update. Also, during the pandemic, young professionals who previously had little time to really study their homes and do the research into great design opportunities were focused on spaces like kitchens and baths.”
• “Video conferencing (Zoom, for example) has become the norm and has made communication with clients, architects, and builders more digital, with fewer in-person meetings and travel. This has increased productivity. And Pinterest continues to be useful for us to ‘see’ a client’s vision and use as a tool to source photos of specific ideas or applications for clients to consider.”
• “I’ve seen a visual transition from hand sketches to digital. I’m now able to create compelling digital design iterations more quickly. I’ve found that this allows for more open and interactive client communication, due to its ease of editability, and allows for quicker client approvals, keeping us on schedule.”
— AMER SAHOURY, DAVIS & DAVIS, FARMINGTON HILLS
Client demographics, home prioritization (a nice upshot from the pandemic), technology advances (including video conferencing and digital design), information discovery and inspiration via social media, and increased productivity like we’ve never seen before are all part of our new world.
What hasn’t changed over the past 20 years? From the beginning of this competition, the winning designs have always been both aesthetically pleasing and functional, and they meet the lifestyle needs of clients.
To all who have submitted entries for the DDA over the years, thank you for sharing your creations. I look forward to celebrating all of the 2023 winning designs at the Detroit Design Awards party on June 5 at One Campus Martius. Let’s raise a glass to 20 years!

Industry professionals share their insights on 20 trends they’re seeing, from cool turntables to black plumbing fixtures to wellness awareness
BY MEGAN SWOYERAWAY WITH CLUTTER
“I was very happy to see massive TV armoires and TV cabinets go away, along with all the VCR/DVD players and other goodies that would constantly fall out of the doors when you opened them! Stacks of CDs have given way to high-resolution digital streaming like Tidal.”
– NEAL CHECK, OWNER, SOUNDCHECK INC., SOUTHFIELD
ORGANIZED LIVING
“Customized organization that makes life more CONVENIENT and BEAUTIFUL will continue to increase in popularity.”
— JEANINE YANCY, DESIGNER, KSI KITCHEN & BATH, SEVERAL LOCATIONS
GOING UP
“Master closets/dressing rooms are increasing in size, while LARGE KITCHENS are still the central focal area of daily life.”
— LOU DESROSIERS, OWNER, DESROSIERS ARCHITECTS, BLOOMFIELD HILLS
FORMAL NO MORE
“We’re rarely designing formal dining rooms or living rooms these days. They’re no longer utilized, as homeowners’ lifestyles have changed significantly.”
— LOU DESROSIERS, OWNER, DESROSIERS ARCHITECTS, BLOOMFIELD HILLS
THE DARK SIDE
“Matte black plumbing fixtures will be around for a good while.”
— JOSHUA MOSS, VICE PRESIDENT, ADVANCE PLUMBING AND HEATING SUPPLY CO., WALLED LAKE AND DETROIT
PEACE OUT
“In today’s world, there’s so much activity and noise. I think people are more attracted to their homes being a sanctuary — quiet, nurturing, safe, and simple. Perhaps a cabinet to showcase a treasured collection or family heirlooms is all that’s needed; certainly not layers and layers of unnecessary décor and decoration.”
VINTAGE APPEAL
“I’ve been so drawn to mixing patterns, textures, and different eras for a lighthearted but timeless approach to styling space. Sourcing vintage and antique pieces helps with this practice, and often lends so much more depth and character than anything you can purchase new. Personality is definitely here to stay.”
COLOR CUES I
“Well-curated rooms using impactful color are always relevant. We benefit from the energy color can bring to our spirit. I’ve always been a fan of the joyful expression of color, and I see this emphasis in our projects well into the future.”
— KATHLEEN MCGOVERN, OWNER, KATHLEEN MCGOVERN STUDIO OF INTERIOR DESIGN, GROSSE POINTE PARK
COLOR CUES II
“We’re seeing pastels and BRIGHT COLORS returning for furniture, kitchens, and millwork. It’s a flashback to the 1990s.”
— MADISON BARTELT, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND PROJECT MANAGER, VOGUE FURNITURE,PLAYING THE CLASSICS, LITERALLY
“Classic LP vinyl and turntables will never go out of style. They’re like a great leather club chair that gets better with age!”
— NEAL CHECK, OWNER, SOUNDCHECK INC., SOUTHFIELD
ROYAL OAK — AMY WEINSTEIN, OWNER, AMW DESIGN STUDIO, BIRMINGHAMWARM FRONT
“Warm design is here to stay. That includes wood tones; rich, warm hues; a mix of materials; cues from nature; natural stone; and mixing and matching. Less of the gray, monotone, and cold look.”
TIME WARP
“Anything that’s 1980s or 1990s design is in. I can’t believe I’m seeing the styles from my childhood bedroom, kitchen, and living room coming back, but here we are! Crimson, burnt orange and marigolds, rich browns, and creams are here. We’ve moved on from the white and gray!”
ELECTRIFIED
“The big change for the future will be the ALL-ELECTRIC HOME. We already have a couple in design now. Convection ovens, electric fireplaces, and electric cars have changed the equation.”
RUG LOVE
“Everyone loves hard floors (wood, stone, tile) for their ease of cleaning, but it’s so important to introduce a soft texture and pattern. Rugs can be heirlooms or they can be fun, funky, trendy accessories.”
STUNNING STONE
“We’ve had such a long run with quartz products as technology advanced, but our clients are shifting back to the timeless elegance of real stone. Natural quartzite and marbles elevate any space and provide a unique quality that can’t be duplicated.”
— BRAD ANGELINI, OWNER, ANGELINI & ASSOCIATES ARCHITECTS, ANN ARBOR — JEN CHILDS, DIRECTOR OF INTERIORS AND PRESERVATION, VERSA, ROYAL OAK — ANNA VERSACI, OWNER, ANNA VERSACI DESIGN, BEVERLY HILLS — BARBI STALBURG KASOFF, OWNER, STALBURG DESIGN, BLOOMFIELD HILLS AND WASHINGTON, D.C.TOTAL TECH
“A home entirely connected by SMART TECHNOLOGY — whether it be voice, motion, or touch-activated — from plumbing fixtures to appliances will become a standard for everyone’s home at some point in the future.”
— JEANINE YANCY, DESIGNER, KSI KITCHEN & BATH, SEVERAL LOCATIONS
BACK TO THE FUTURE
WELLNESS CHECK
“There will be more of an awareness on how your home can support human wellness. For instance, some commonly used building materials perform very well, but have detrimental effects on our health. There will be a bit of a correction in this area. (Other examples include) lighting plans designed around circadian rhythms, more sophisticated HVAC systems to combat an increasingly toxic world, better forms of insulation, and less VOCs and off-gassing.”
— ANNA VERSACI, OWNER, ANNA VERSACI DESIGN, BEVERLY HILLS
EARTHLY DELIGHTS
“To balance out (a lot of) technology, people will want sustainable, biophilic design features such as plants, gardens (indoor or outdoor), earthy colors, texture, and lots of natural lighting to maintain a sense of well-being and connection to nature.”
— JEANINE YANCY, DESIGNER, KSI KITCHEN & BATH, SEVERAL LOCATIONS
HOME & AWAY
“People are wanting interiors with a global perspective that incorporates international travel experiences. But also, they want regional flair in design. We’re connected to family, friends, and business interests all over the world, yet we thrive through being rooted in our own sense of place.”
— DEIDRE REMTEMA, CEO, DEIDRE INTERIORS, GRAND RAPIDS
“Coming into the future, again, are textured wall surfaces that are applied, such as plaster finishes, that give a more finished and elegant look but appear more seamless than wallpaper.”
— JEN CHILDS, DIRECTOR OF INTERIORS AND PRESERVATION, VERSA, ROYAL OAK

TEXT BY GIUSEPPA NADROWSKILEGENDARY DESIGN
Detroit has become as designcentric as any art-focused region in the country. Take, for example, the 2015 designation of Detroit by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the United States’ first and only City of Design, thanks to the work of Design Core Detroit (DCD), which applied for the prestigious designation. Since 2010, Design Core has been committed to growing the city’s design-driven businesses, developing inclusive design practices, and making Detroit a “globally recognized and valued creative capital,” says Kiana Wenzell, DCD’s coexecutive director. From the organization’s annual Month of Design festival in September
to its Detroit Design Network, a membership-based talent source, DCD is connecting Detroit to “the design community, leading to more resources … more collaborations between creatives … and more business development opportunities,” Wenzell says.
Adds James Haefner, of James Haefner Photography Inc., the photographer behind the much-loved book “Michigan Modern: An Architectural Legacy,” who contributed the photos of Lafayette Park and the Dorothy G. Turkel House in this story: “All the reasons that Detroit has been at the center of modern design for the last 90 years still exist! Cranbrook, the automotive manufacturers, and iconic architecture from the Saarinens, Yamasaki, Birkerts, Kessler, Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, and, of course, Albert Kahn, continue to inspire today’s talent.”
With the region’s history steeped in the arts and architecture, and organizations like DCD adding to that rich legacy, there’s no doubt Detroit is a hot spot for those who want to experience cutting-edge design. Here, we showcase 20 of our favorite destinations for design buffs, from buildings to exhibitions.
If you want to fully experience the city’s art, architecture, and beauty, check out these 20 destinations and organizationsRenowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Dorothy G. Turkel House, which is a private residence in Palmer Woods.
ABOVE THE FOLD
As an agency representing firms in architecture and design, Above the Fold promotes talent within the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. From leading PR campaigns to advising design teams on projects like Library Street Collective’s The Shepherd, and Prince Concept’s True North and Core City Habitat, Above the Fold is helping to revitalize the city through innovative design. Its headquarters, a former auto shop turned art-filled workspace, is just one of many such examples. “Whether you’re a maker, a connoisseur, or an entrepreneur, Detroit’s history as an epicenter for creativity is its driving force. Everywhere you turn there’s something interesting to look at, to imagine as it was, or reimagine what it can be,” says founder John Patrick. Above the Fold, 1042 Holbrook Ave., abovethe-fold.com
ALPINO
This past April, the Corktown community welcomed Alpino — a wine-inspired restaurant that draws influence from the traditional dishes of countries along Europe’s largest mountain range, the Alps. Founded and operated by Detroit native David Richter, the restaurant’s design evokes the charm of European countryside farmhouses through natural materials, rustic light fixtures, and a stunning stone fireplace with 100-yearold cypress beams. Stay tuned for the opening of their summer patio, which will feature a bandshell for live music. Alpino, 1426 Bagley St., alpinodetroit.com
BARDA
Barda, the former radiator shop that’s now an Argentinian restaurant, is making waves in Core City with its moody design, which showcases bold blue tile and an open kitchen that employs ancestral Patagonian cooking methods. The modern South American-inspired menu designed by co-owner and Executive Chef Javier Bardauil has earned the restaurant the James Beard

CASTOR DESIGN
Established in Toronto and expanded to Detroit, Castor Design is a multidisciplinary design studio led by Brian Richer and Kei Ng. Specializing in housewares, lighting, and custom work, Castor Design’s award-winning products have earned the brand international recognition for its inventive use of materials and highly conceptual designs. In 2019, Castor Design purchased and renovated a studio in the East Village to set up a product-based space for client design work and Matheson Cookware, which was launched in partnership with renowned chef Matty Matheson. THE CATERPILLAR
An eight-unit dwelling with 23-foot ceilings, and located in a tranquil setting that includes 166 trees, The Caterpillar is the latest residential experiment from Prince Concepts in Detroit’s Core City. “How do we give Detroit and its residents … museum-quality apartments for not more than an apartment would typically cost?” says Prince Concepts’ president, Philip Kafka. To transform the 9,000-square-foot Quonset hut, Prince Concepts collaborated with architect Ishtiaq Rafiuddin of Undecorated, who helped to revolutionize the space into a light-filled sanctuary. The Caterpillar, 4474 16th St., caterpillardetroit.com
CITIZEN ROBOTICS
Since winning a Ford Foundation grant in May of 2021, Citizen Robotics, a southwest Detroitbased nonprofit, has been spreading awareness of the possibilities of creating affordable housing using 3-D printing technology. This year, the organization has much to celebrate, with the completion of its first 3-D printed concrete home in Detroit. Citizen Robotics, 2100 20th St., citizenrobotics.org
COLLEGE FOR CREATIVE STUDIES
For nearly 120 years, the College for Creative Studies “has been at the crossroads of Detroit’s art and design community,” says the school’s president, Donald Tuski. “Not only is CCS committed to nurturing the creativity of future artists and designers, but to our involvement in the Detroit community.” College for Creative Studies, 201 E. Kirby, collegeforcreativestudies. edu
DOROTHY G. TURKEL HOUSE
Legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright built only seven Usonian Automatic homes, and one of those is the Dorothy G. Turkel House in Detroit, designed in 1955. Current owners Norm Silk and Dale Morgan purchased the thenuninhabitable home in 2006. Renovations used materials Wright would have employed, and any structural changes were guided by his protegee, architect Larry Brink. “The Turkel House is like a celebrity of a certain age, requiring attention to maintain her beauty and deserving respect of her place in history,” Morgan says. THE EXCHANGE
Barton-Malow’s Exchange is a 16-story residential tower constructed using LIFTBuild’s breakthrough vertical manufacturing, in which floors are literally lifted into place from the top down. This innovative approach made it possible to build on an otherwise difficult site, while limiting potentially unsafe machinery and significantly increasing efficiency. The building, located in Greektown, is due to be completed this July. Twenty percent of its apartments will be allocated to affordable housing. Exchange, 310 Gratiot Ave., exchangedetroit.com
I.M. WEISS GALLERY
“Innovation, design, and craftsmanship are a huge part of our DNA as a city,” says Isabelle Weiss, founder of Detroit’s I.M. Weiss Gallery. “I founded the gallery nine years ago with an appreciation for this history and a certain sense of responsibility to do my part in continuing this legacy.” Starting June 3, the gallery will be showcasing the works of Grand Rapids-based textile artist Jenna Van

LAFAYETTE PARK
In the late 1950s, construction began on architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s nowhistoric Lafayette Park. “As a 20-year resident, one of the favorite ways I like to think about its impact is that it’s full of lush green space,” says Christian Unverzagt, associate professor of practice in architecture at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and principal of Detroit’s M1DTW Architects. “Not a single resident owns a lawnmower. I can only imagine how many hundreds (thousands?) of pieces of lawn equipment have no need to exist because of how the neighborhood is designed, used, and maintained,” he says. Mies Detroit, miesdetroit.com
LANTERN
Opening this fall, Lantern is a mixeduse redevelopment project spearheaded by Library Street Collective. The project
GOOD PLANNING Above: To build the Exchange residential tower (center), floors were placed from the top down.involves transforming a more-than-100year-old former commercial bakery into the headquarters of two local arts nonprofits, Signal-Return and Progressive Arts Studio Collective. The space will also feature affordable artist studios and an outdoor courtyard. New York-based architectural firm OMA is leading the design, which will include drilling 1,500 holes into the south face of the building to make it “a glowing lantern at night.” Lantern, 9226 Kercheval Ave; Library Street Collective, 1274 Library St., lscgallery.com
MAD NICE
With coastal Italian specialties and a Cali-chic interior (designed by Detroit’s PARINI), Mad Nice transports guests “to places that evoke great memories,” founder Jeremy Sasson says of the Cass Corridor eatery. “The beautiful colors found along the coastlines of Italy or the bright, energetic colors and clean lines of the Midcentury Modern architectural landscape of Palm Springs (are connected) in a meaningful way with the spirit and soul we believe is scattered throughout Detroit.” Mad Nice, 4120 2nd Ave., madnicedetroit.com
MARYGROVE EARLY EDUCATION CENTER
Designed by Detroit-based Barton-Malow, the award-winning Marygrove Early Education Center features eye-catching classrooms, natural playscapes, and a curriculum developed by the University of Michigan. Not only is its design its colorful terracotta exterior celebrates the community’s diversity — to be applauded, but the project’s goal is worthy of praise: a publicprivate partnership that seeks to solve Detroit’s most prevalent challenges by providing pathways for success to children. OUDOLF GARDEN DETROIT
Within Belle Isle lies a 3-acre garden designed by acclaimed garden master Piet Oudolf. Unveiled in 2021, the year-round splendor includes 32,000 perennials and 48,000 bulbs. “Visionary designer Piet Oudolf creates living works of art — combining perennials and native grasses by the thousands in ecological gardens that never close for the season,” says Maura Campbell, an Oudolf grounds crew member. Oudolf Garden Detroit, Belle Isle Park, oudolfgardendetroit.org
PARK(ING)
Detroit-based Prince Concepts worked with landscape architect Julie Bargmann, of D.I.R.T. studio, to create PARK(ing), an award-winning transformation of a 24,000-square-foot parking lot into a calming community greenspace with 28 parking spaces disguised within lush foliage. “Parking is just a reality that people who live in Michigan need, but unfortunately nobody has thought about in a new way,” says Philip Kafka, president of Prince Concepts. PARK(ing), 4831 Grand River Ave., princeconcepts.com
PEWABIC POTTERY
Completed in 2018, INFORM Studio — the woman-owned, WBE-certified architecture and design firm looking to “improve how the built environment is designed and delivered to bring positive change” — helped Detroit’s Pewabic Pottery, a
National Historic Landmark, not only more than double the size of their production space with an ultra-modern addition to the back of their legendary studio, but designed an exterior façade that showcases their legendary artistry. The iridescent tiles were created with custom 3-D printed molds and integrated into a “computationally-driven brick pattern.” Pewabic Pottery, 10125 E. Jefferson Ave., pewabic.org; in-formstudio.com
THE SHEPHERD
NICE GOING!

In 2021, Library Street Collective announced plans to create a transformative public arts campus in the East Village with the Shepherd a 110-year-old church turned cultural arts hub — at the helm. With architectural design firm Peterson Rich Office leading the metamorphosis, the Shepherd, opening this fall, will feature galleries, classrooms, multifaceted programming, and
even a public library curated by Asmaa Walton, the founder of “Black Art Library.” LSC’s cultural district will also include a sculpture garden honoring late artist Charles McGee and a public skate park created with Tony Hawk and Detroit artist McArthur Binion. Library Street Collective, 1274 Library St., lscgallery.com
SHINOLA HOTEL
“Rather than change Detroit’s skyline, we wanted to honor the architectural history by supporting the city’s legacy of innovation, manufacturing, craft, and artistry,” says Ruthie Underwood, the chief creative officer of the Shinola Hotel. The hotel, known for its impeccably designed spaces — such as Detroit artist Margo Wolowiec’s custom woven panels in reception, the Gachot Studios-designed San Morello restaurant, and the art-filled public living room — “takes cues from our brand’s design language as well as from the city of Detroit,” Underwood says. SIDEWALK DETROIT
Through public art, cultural programming, and an inclusive approach, Sidewalk Detroit aims to promote and improve the livability of the city’s neighborhoods. Since its inception in 2012, the organization has become known for its efforts in revitalizing community spaces, like its recent work in the Brightmoor neighborhood’s Eliza Howell Park. There, Sidewalk Detroit hosted international artist Patrick Dougherty, who created the park’s “Stickwork” sculpture, which will be on view until the end of the year. Some 150 artists, volunteers, and community members assisted Dougherty in its creation. Welcome to Thistledown Gardens, where the English ‘accent’ is charming
BY MEGAN SWOYER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN MACONOCHIE STYLED BY JOSH CLARKYou’ll find nothing but British classics at Brad Stanwick and Matt Anstett’s Pleasant Ridge home.
Over the past few years, interior designer John Rattray, of Ferndalebased Craighall Interiors (craighallinteriors.com), has been working to completely remodel many rooms in the 1912 historic bungalow the men refer to as Thistledown.
Stanwick says he’s always loved English history, movies, and furniture. As a student of
art history, he focused on decorative arts — English, in particular. But when he and Anstett purchased the home, they decided to work on the landscaping first. “There was so much to do inside and out, but we wanted to get the gardens growing so we could enjoy them soon. We went stepby-step,” Anstett says.
One look at their gardens and terrace and you’ll be wondering if you’ve been transported to a quaint, centuries-old village in England. And while guests are enjoying a spot of English Breakfast tea or a pint of lager sitting beneath the maple canopy, they’ll also bask in the gardens’ many traditional elements. “There’s a heavy overtone of the English aesthetic, something both myself and the homeowners are very drawn to,” Rattray says.
CHEERIO!
Above: After cutting flowers, a spot of English Breakfast tea or a pint of lager can be enjoyed amid what looks like a centuries-old terrace.
Here are 20 insights, tips, and tidbits for creating European-style enchantment
1. NEIGHBORLY
Farmington-based landscape architect John Lindsay Mayer (jlmlandscapearchitect.com) drew up the original garden layout nearly 20 years ago. “He was doing phenomenal work in the neighborhood,” Stanwick says. “He understood the English look, and we wanted something with koi and fish, and he came up with that design, too.”
2. PRETTY POTS
Stanwick and Anstett run The Parson’s Nose Antiques (theparsonsnoseantiques.com) in Oak Park. As importers of English antiques, the couple often travels to England on buying trips. Beyond interior furnishings and accessories, they sell antique garden ornaments such as bird baths, sculptures, and pottery. “I have an obsession with hand-thrown terracotta pots and Victorian ones,” Stanwick says. And terracotta pots, as it turns out, are the perfect containers for showcasing his other obsession: geraniums. “I love the ones with the chartreuse leaves and pink flowers,” he says. Some of the couple’s favorites are Queen of Persia, Mrs. Cox, and Vancouver Centennial.
3. WHAT’S IN A NAME
Stanwick and Anstett named their home “Thistledown.” It’s said that British homeowners sometimes named their abodes after places they enjoyed visiting, or used a name to describe the building’s original use. “When we moved in, the gardens were overtaken by thistles, they were everywhere! They have a downy seed. That’s where the name comes from,” Stanwick says.
4. BEAUTIFUL BOXWOOD
The couple’s 300 boxwood plants — low-growing broadleaf evergreens with small, rounded leaves — are reminiscent of the manicured gardens of England, and their topiary and trimmed hedges. “We don’t maintain those ourselves,” Anstett says, “but we hire someone to trim them like a pyramid with a flat top and angled sides, so the lower branches will get the sun.”
5. GOOD FOR YEW!
A row of English yews grows along the back of the yard. “We have someone trim those, as well,” Anstett says. “The structure of the boxwood and yews is softened by the gardens, so we have formal and informal.” (English yews, incidentally, have a fascinating history; Yew wood was used for the longbows of English archers and is still used today for making bows and cabinetwork.)
6. A SMASHING VARIETY!
“Coneflowers, roses, and Annabelle hydrangeas go wild back there, tumbling over the pathways,” Stanwick shares.
HEDGE FUN
Above, left and right: Low-growing broadleaf boxwood adorn the beautiful grounds. “We don’t maintain those ourselves,” Matt Anstett says, “but we hire someone to trim them with a flat top and angled sides, so the lower branches will get the sun.”
7. A CUT ABOVE
The cutting garden brims with zinnias, bells of Ireland, cosmos, snapdragons, and coneflowers. “It’s a rainbow of color,” Anstett says.
8. GENERATIONAL GARDENING
Stanwick’s grandmother inspired him to grow a green thumb. “My grandma was a gardener and got me started young,” he says. “She and I were always out.” Anstett says he has learned a lot about the good earth from Stanwick.
9. REVEALING THEIR SOURCES
The men purchase plants from a few nurseries, including Telly’s Greenhouse and Garden Center in Troy, and Ray Wiegand’s Nursery in Macomb.
10. CLIMB THE WALLS
John Evans climbing roses are “insane” come June, Anstett boasts. “They’re very coldhardy, and what you think of when thinking of an English climbing rose.”
11. A ROOM FOR BLOOMS
A multipurpose flower room that’s “kind of like a mudroom or boot room,” Stanwick says, is an extension of the kitchen and is a perfect spot for cleaning vegetables and trimming flowers from the garden. With a soapstone sink (great for accommodating not only harvest washes, but also a handy bathing spot for their small dogs) and garden sheers, it’s easy to create instant bouquets for indoors. Hand-painted cabinetry by Dave Lefleur, painted on-site (as would have been done in the “teens and ’20s,” designer Rattray says), is by Troy-based John Morgan of Perspectives Cabinetry (perspectivescabinetry.com).
12.
CALM AND COY
The men installed much of the koi pond themselves, and learned about digging a pond, liner installation, piping, aeration, and filtration. “As we were filling it up, we had a pool party,” Stanwick recalls, laughing. Many of their original koi fish — in vibrant colors like white, black, orange, and yellow — are still with them. “It’s very calming,” Stanwick says of the pond.
13.
GETTING SAUCY
Some of the heirloom tomatoes the men grow include Mortgage Lifter, Cherokee Purple, and Cosmonaut Volkov. “We always have an overabundance and make our own tomato sauce in early autumn,” Stanwick says.
14. VERY V
Classic, vertical V-groove walls adorn the flower room. (V-groove planks are wider and have chamfered edges that fit together with a tongue-and-groove joint. They also look wider than beadboard cladding and have a V-shape between the boards.) “This space was an old porch. We wanted it to feel like a cocoon,” Rattray says, “and use the least amount of drywall we could so it feels really original and is more durable. The room gets a lot of use; we’re in
the garden every day.” Bluestone flooring stands up to muddy and snowy boots and “can get beat up, like those in an old country house.”
15. GRANITE CITY
Decomposed granite (from the Rock Shop in Plymouth) is underfoot in many areas. “We decided against pea gravel because it’s rounded, and you sink into it when you walk. The granite interlocks more when compacted, and forms a good surface. And it has a great sound when you walk on it,” Anstett says.
16. PATIO PLEASURES
“The Japanese maples around the patio provide a canopy, so you don’t need an umbrella when sitting on the patio,” Anstett says.
Both pages: A multipurpose flower room comes in handy for everything from cleaning the garden’s harvest to arranging flowers. A more intimate seating area is welcoming. Note the decomposed granite ground cover, which “has a great sound when you walk on it,” Anstett says.
17. BIRD’S THE WORD
“It’s like we’re in the country here; we’ve got woodpeckers, hummingbirds, Baltimore orioles, and owls,” Stanwick says.
18. AN-TEAK-Y
A Chippendale-inspired teak dining set from Restoration Hardware works well for parties, says designer Rattray, who specifically ordered those pieces. “It looks like what would be in an English garden,” he says. “I told them ‘You have to get this,’ and ‘I bet they’ll discontinue it in the next year.’ Sure enough, they purchased the set and it did discontinue. It’s held up really well. Teak, when outdoors, gets a nice silvery-gray patina.” Rattray also assisted with the placement of existing European garden sculptures and other teak furnishings.
19. REPRO RESPECT
Anstett removed an original window near the door that leads to the backyard and shipped it to a millwork company that specializes in historic reproduction. “They used old-growth wood and antique glass to make the ‘new’ windows. Same with the door, which had to be replaced,” Rattray explains. Rocky Mountain hardware on the door complements the look. “The attention to historic detail makes it all the more special,” he says.
20. KEEP IT GOING
Even though the yard looks highly manicured, the men always leave dead branches in trees, and never cut back their perennials in the fall. “They have seedheads that the birds need during wintertime. We do a spring clean-up for these items, rather than a fall clean-up. We’re so happy to provide the habitat,” Stanwick says.

MAISON BIRMINGHAM
A lot of the inspiration here — the light blues, layers of texture, patterns, and rich millwork — came from southeastern designers and architects. The style is warm, livable, and versatile, much like an outfit you can dress up or down. The essence is layers of warmth and texture within a context of clean, architectural lines. Intricate stone and porcelain paneling simulates more traditional (yet updated) millwork.

Applied to the face of the fireplace and log storage is a distinctly unique concrete tile. Formed so the edges peel back, each tile appears to be handmade. The peeled-back corners are back-lit with LED lighting. Charcoal-gray concrete tiles are framed by a blackened steel framework and pair nicely with the modern, light-colored terrazzo floor. Although there’s contrast in color and texture, it remains cohesive in style.

The interior and exterior lighting shines through expansive windows, allowing light to spread out over the surrounding landscape. The exterior lighting accentuates the strong architectural lines of this magnificent residence; prominent stone piers at the entrance are up-lit, complementing the four fire pots and lighting the ceiling of the canopy. An infinity edge pool glows with blue-tinted LED lights, and is complemented by up-lit landscape lighting.

To bring a modern, maximalist style to a dated space, no surface was left untouched. A surround of dimensional tile with inlaid brass by Alison Rose for Artistic Tile provides a dramatic focal point, while a floor-to-ceiling tile application with curvy vertical lines draws attention to the double-height ceilings. Ceramic balls serve as an alternative to traditional fireplace logs, and brass accessories complement the stone’s graceful curves.

After being hidden for 120 years, they’re now visible when you look at the barrel ceiling. The owners also wanted to optimize the natural light and open space within the structure. Interior designer Madison Philip receives this year’s Rising Star honor
TEXT BY MEGAN SWOYERThe Brian Killian Rising Star winner for 2023 has had an eye on design for several years. In fact, ever since she was a little girl, Madison Philip has gravitated toward interior design. “I used to love going into friends’ and family members’ homes, and whenever I traveled, I’d look at how things were done or figure out what made spaces work so well,” she recalls. “As I got older, even when other opportunities would present themselves, I always came back to interior design, knowing it’s what I wanted to do and had a deep passion for.”
A few years after graduating from Liberty University in Virginia in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in interior design and a minor in business, Philip opened Studio Harmony in her Royal Oak home.
This year’s Detroit Design Awards Rising Star says a favorite part of the job is walking through the design process with a client and then seeing the full transformation take place.
“I also enjoy creating clever solutions, and knowing my clients have entrusted me with their homes — which is such a personal and intimate space — means a lot.”
Her portfolio includes working on everything from a 1950s Midcentury home in Bloomfield Hills to a Northville mudroom. The name of her firm, Studio Harmony, refers to the fact that she believes she creates spaces that sing, and helps clients find harmony in their homes.
A recent Troy project is one of her favorites. The clients wanted a modern, dramatic feel to the home while taking into account the more traditional interior architecture the house already had. “I focused on a simple palette and clean design, and allowed quality materials to be the (stars),” she says. “One of my favorite parts of this project had to be the bunk room. The clients had a spare room that was completely empty, and since they have a large amount of extended family and friends who visit from out of town, this provided enough room for two twin and queen beds — the ultimate hosting package!”
When not working, this former Division 1 collegiate soccer player says some of her favorite pastimes are being outdoors, reading classic novels, and working on a design for a Mid-century-styled chicken coop.
Congratulations, Madison!

CONTEMPO-COOL
From poolside to inside, unconventional elements meet modern touches in this home, which was voted winner of the 2023 Readers’ Choice for Best Overall Home.
This lakefront residence took first place in the Readers’ Choice award for Best Overall Home. And apparently our readers are as astute as our judges, because the Detroit Design Awards jury gave this home a second-place honor in Best Overall Home!
Exuding plenty of urban-industrial appeal, this more than-4,000-square-foot home provides both function and comfort for a family that includes five children, two adults, and two dogs. The home features several sophisticated
terraces that connect the residence to the water, both visually and functionally. The exterior materials, which were selected for their low maintenance, include steel roofing, zinc wall panels, and simulated mahogany vertical siding. Fond du Lac limestone masonry grounds the look.
Inside, industrial touches meet with a luxurious yet eclectic, casual vibe. Hand-scraped wide-plank oak floors are juxtaposed with refined walnut wood paneling and bench-made cabinetry, while rustic blackened steel-framed doors play off honed terrazzo, concrete, and marble floors. The soft gold and gunmetal finishes selected for the lighting, hardware, and accessories combine to create a warm and unique atmosphere, and the home’s durable materials hold up perfectly without sacrificing style. Convention was purposely disregarded. For example, instead of a typical living room, the home features a striking steel-and-glass-enclosed allseasons room that leads to the open family and dining rooms as well as the kitchen, and the separate wings of the second-floor boys’ and girls’ spaces are organized around a loft study area that conveniently opens to a terrace. Well done!
