CURB APPEAL
W
hen my husband and I were thinking about moving into a different neighborhood many years ago, our young sons rebelled. “No! We must live near our friends, on this street!” they’d yell. They made a point. Although we were craving a larger home with more character and a bigger basement, our sons were all about staying put in a place they cherished. So, we did. Our neighbors were part of the reason why. I recall when one of our sons volunteered to keep a schoolroom pet hamster over winter break. Of course, the moment we opened the cage to feed it, it scurried away — into the powder room, and disappeared up behind the cabinet. What was I going to tell the teacher and children? I made a frantic call to our sons’ very good friend’s mother, two doors down. She raced to the rescue and managed to coax the little guy out from his hiding spot. Then there was the time a couple across the street volunteered their muscles to help me move a huge cabinet from the living room to the family room, so we could then move the piano into the living room from the kids’ playroom. Remember the massive power blackout of 2003 that hit the Midwest, northeast, and beyond? Our front yard became a gathering place for neighbors that first day of the outage. And although all of us were concerned about what was going on, I served drinks and hors d’oeuvres, making the most of the occasion and turning it into a little neighborhood party. And I can’t forget bird duty. For years, we’d drop off our pet cockatiel, Hyguy, at our next-door neighbor’s home when we traveled. Although they have since downsized and moved, we’ve built a lasting friendship and still cherish our meetups with them. Replacing them are our new next-door neighbors, who arrived just before the COVID-19 pandemic. With a couple of young kids in tow (more would come), these two doctors had their hands full, but they’d always check in to see how we were doing or if we needed anything, and vice versa, especially during those first few months of pandemic chaos. Now we get each other’s mail, water the flowers, and, yes, mow, and keep an eye on things when our families travel. So, what are the most important property features on a house’s listing? You might think it includes “one-of-a kind kitchen, finished basement, move-in ready, or perfectly priced.” I’ve learned that for us it’s helpful and kind neighbors (priceless) who will inspire you to think twice before deciding to move. If you’ve got great neighbors, perhaps rather than packing, it’s just time to do some updating. I’m actually making another type of move, but not into a new house. I’ve so enjoyed working with all of you, Hour Media, and our freelance photogaphers and writers the past 11 years on this magazine, helping to grow the publication with its new branding in 2020, and increasing participation in our Design Awards, but I’ve decided to step away from my role as editor to spend more time with family. I’ve made sure to let folks know I’m not moving away and plan to continue learning about your designs and being involved with the magazine as a contributing writer. I was happy to help place the new editor, Giuseppa Nadrowski, in this exciting position. She has worked with many of us on other Hour publications over the years, and has been a regular contributor to Detroit Design. Giuseppa has a keen eye for both design and fashion. I thank our CEO, president, and publisher for providing me with such a great role and for inviting me to continue as editor of Hour Media’s Michigan BLUE, and spearhead our growing emphasis on waterfront living, travel, dining, and more for that wonderful magazine. Please be sure to stay in touch. I’m still in the neighborhood!

hen a condominium in the Country Club Village complex in Northville went up for sale, it didn’t take long for a couple to submit an offer on the Ranch-style, stand-alone residence. The two, who have grown children and grandchildren, had been living in the development for years and loved the area, but were looking to start over with a fresh layout and look. Enter Northville-based Grace This Space Interiors, a design firm that also helps
homeowners organize their houses and relocate. Says owner Orna Fathers: “(The condo) needed updating; there was a lot of salmon-pink carpet, pink tile around the fireplace, and outdated columns. Plus, it wasn’t practical.” Fathers kept both function and form top of mind when presenting her ideas to the owners, who spend half the year in Florida and consider their Northville condominium a “summer home.” Fathers started working on the makeover project in 2020 and completed it in May of 2022, and most of the overhaul was done while the snowbirds were at their Sunshine State home. “It’s nice to do the dirty work while clients are gone,” Fathers acknowledges. “Once we were done, they could move right in.” Besides new flooring, furnishings, millwork, paint, appliances,

and fixtures, Fathers and her team made several layout adjustments. “We created an entryway by boxing in an open stairway that led to the basement,” she says. “That allowed us to create an accent wall that we painted Azure blue.” The team also closed off an open sunroom and added French doors and a custom arched window on a wall between the living room and the fourseason room. “The clients wanted to use that sunroom as their TV room,” explains Fathers, who had special window treatments installed so that when the couple is watching television, they don’t get glare on the screen. Bathrooms also were overhauled. “When we were looking at bathroom plans, the husband said the key to a happy, long marriage is giving your wife her own bathroom. And that’s what we did. Now, we all jokingly refer to it as the queen’s bathroom.” It’s located right off the bedroom, while the husband’s bath is just down the hall. “It worked out well because I was truly able to give her what she wanted and provide a more masculine look, with darker colors, for him,” Fathers says.

The “queen’s” space is airy and bright and features a light fixture from Visual Comfort that evokes a regal feel. “This fixture (the Renwick Large Sphere Chandelier) serves as a captivating statement piece, featuring multiple layers of crystals that refract light from the bay windows beautifully. It not only provides ample illumination for larger spaces, but also adds a touch of luxury and sophistication,” the designer says. To complement this grand centerpiece, the team incorporated Lloyd large, jeweled sconces, also by Visual Comfort, above each mirror. “They feature jeweled accents and crystal details that contribute to their opulent appearance, adding another layer of luxury,” Fathers says. Other changes included creating a customized marble surround for the fireplace (cut in one piece!) and adding a head-turning fireplace accent wall. “The original wall had these open ledges, like a cat run,” Fathers recalls, “so we filled it in and had drywall installed, and then added millwork.” She finished it off with a beautiful blue paint. The lower-level bathroom was added (at this time, too) to accommodate additional guests and be a convenient post-exercise bathroom. It showcases mosaic with a modern twist on the café-style mosaic glass tiles that are soft underfoot and evoke a vintage charm. Fathers recreated the kitchen layout, putting the oven (the homeowners asked for a wall oven) near the refrigerator and installing the microwave in the island. “That opened it up more,” the designer

She also covered the dishwasher with a panel that blends with the cabinetry and makes the space feel larger. “The heavier items are together now, and when you enter the house from the garage, you look straight into the living room and out to the sunroom.” The hand-painted kitchen backsplash tile (Pratt + Larson) depicts a pretty floral pattern in blues and light yellows. The custom-made element is dimensional and brings the outdoors in, Fathers explains. “We chose the colors of the flowers and the design, so it’s made just for this space,” she says. The repeating blue in the backsplash picks up on the blue of the kitchen island and blue hues in other areas of the home. “The wife loves blues, especially Wedgwood blue.”

The former laundry room was stark, with phosphorescent overhead lighting. “It was a boring utility space where you wouldn’t want to spend time,” the designer says, so she added cheerful blue cabinetry and colorful wallpaper with various blues, bringing in natural elements. “We talked about it being such a boring space, and why not make it a fun and bring it to life? The homeowner was sold right away when she saw the butterfly wallpaper.” Although the lighting is quite delicate, it’s perfect for a room of that size. “You can see well, but the fixture doesn’t overwhelm the small space,” Fathers says. The hand-cut glass light fixture (Alec from Visual comfort) adds to the serene, calm atmosphere in the room. “The under-cabinet lighting offers more practical and functional, brighter light,” Fathers explains.

The team closed off an open sunroom and added French doors and a custom arched window on a wall between the living room and the four-season room. A before photo shows the former layout.

Practical & Pretty Smart tips on making the most of your home

IT’S ALL AN ILLUSION: The husband’s bathroom is on the smaller side, but by installing a floating vanity you feel as if there’s more space, Orna Fathers says. “Your eye can see all the way back to the wall and your feet have more space, as they can go beneath it.”
2
FLOORED WITH SMART IDEAS: Fathers selected a luxury vinyl tile, Coretec, that has a few tones in it, so it picks up on furniture colors. “It has warm browns but some variations in it, too, like black,” she says. The homeowners’ black dining table, as well as the driftwood-colored table in the kitchen, pick up on colors in the flooring.
3
EQUAL FOOTING: Fathers didn’t change the layout of the couple’s bathrooms but made the showers level with the floor for a convenient, curbless shower. “This involves lowering, waterproofing, and reinforcing the subfloor,” she says. “This was done to improve accessibility, create a seamless look, and be more functional as it’s easier to maintain.”

SOFFIT BE GONE: The designer opted to have

the husband’s bathroom soffit removed. “Soffits feel like
they bring the ceiling down, which can close a space in and make it feel smaller,” she notes.

CUE THE COLOR: No color is outdated, Fathers
says; it just depends on what you put with the color. All of the blues the homeowner wanted in the cabinetry, island, tile, and other areas also provide a nice flow.
ADDED STORAGE: Fathers selected 15-inchdeep cabinets in the laundry room (most are usually 12
inches). “There’s more room for storing items and the
Once the couple had lived in the renovated home for a while, the husband asked Fathers if she could finish the remaining large storage and utility part of the basement behind the finished gym/bathroom area. After the homeowners had family over for a number of events, they sensed it would be a good idea to finish the basement entirely, especially for watching football games. As of this issue’s press time, the team was wrapping up the installation of a bar, a lounge, and two televisions. “These clients wanted to have a warm space — a house that had a summer house feel and ambience. I think we captured that, but also kept it practical for entertaining and ease of living,” Fathers says. “It’s perfect for snowbirds.”

ust minutes from the cheers and chants of the University of Michigan’s “Big House” lies something much more tranquil and secluded: a private courtyard sanctuary situated on the second floor of the Hoover & Greene Apartments in Ann Arbor. Leading the design of this unexpected paradise was Daryl Toby, designer and owner of Sylvan Lake-based AguaFina Landscape Studio, a firm known for creating fusion-style gardens with unexpected stone, fire, and metal accents. Opened in the summer of 2021, the complex is a stunning new residential development from REDICO. The 167-unit complex
features a second-floor pool deck with views of the university’s iconic football stadium, as well as a slew of additional amenities, but by far its most surprising and impressive offering is a lush, open-air retreat on the second floor (the apartment complex is built on a parking garage) that initially was planned to be nothing more than a concrete pad with a water feature. Knowing the space had far more potential, Toby was able to quickly sketch up a new plan (on a napkin!) when meeting with the

developers. “That was basically what we ended up building, pretty much what I sketched right there on the table,” Toby says. “It just didn’t make sense to have just a central water feature without any other feeling of what this space was going to be used for.” With limited time before residents were due to move in, Toby and his team were tasked with creating a peaceful outdoor sculpture garden in just a few months. Speed and precision were necessary, but the true challenge was the logistics of how to get materials like trees, dirt, and concrete into the building. The answer? A 300-ton crane outfitted with a made-for-theproject hopper that featured bomb bay doors to allow all of the materials to be delivered above and onto the five-story site — including what equated to about 120 pickup trucks’ worth of soil. It was an extraordinary sight, Toby says. “I just kind of stopped and watched as this whole procession of trees was going over the buildings. It was one of the most rewarding projects we’ve had in a while.” Waterproofing was also key to the project, as the courtyard sits above the complex’s parking structure. Corten steel was brought in to develop the space’s topography, which includes raw, organically shaped raised planters necessary to sustain the vegetation. Native sumac was one of the many perennials chosen for the space, and its gorgeous texture lines some of the aggregate concrete paths. “I was there last fall, and the

sumac plants had this brilliant red-orange color to them. It was just stunning. I think once they mature even more, they’re just going to be better and better,” Toby says. “(The sumac is) one of the stronger elements, and it’s funny because that was the element that was a lastminute substitution.” Toby explains that bamboo had originally been selected for the space, but due to the environment, it wasn’t an ideal choice. “So, we just changed the design up — and you have to do that with projects. You can’t just force the idea. Designs are only a road map. You need to look at opportunities at the site and change with what the realities are. Fortunately we did that, and the outcome is so much better than if we just forced in (the bamboo).”
LET’S GO, FIDO!
Happy residents and a four-legged pal enjoy the gorgeous haven.
Russian sage, ornamental onions, weeping pine, and a mature wind-swept gingko tree are just a few of the other plants found in the natural escape. “What was really unique was that about a week after we finished up the details of the project, I was up there by myself and there were butterflies and bees up there,” Toby says. “It was just amazing that nature found its way into that courtyard so quickly.” A rainfall water feature designed by Toby adds a calming sound to the space. The sculptural

elements found along the paths, many of which were created from pieces collected during the designer’s travels to Asia, add to the feeling of serenity. There’s a tea table formed from a polished split boulder, a bench crafted from Indonesian basalt that rests on steel I-beams, a sculptural piece crafted of natural basalt stones heralding from Inner Mongolia, and a live-edge granite bar table with a steel base. Each is a functional and interactive piece of art that blends naturally with the organic form of the space. The addition of lighting helps highlight these elements come nightfall, enabling residents to enjoy the garden at any time of the day. Whether from the rooftop, a balcony, or immersed within, the garden offers residents stunning views as well as a place to relax, unwind, walk a dog, study, and gather with friends. Says Toby: “It conveys a calmer feeling than if it were just all concrete. It really flows well.” MORE INFORMATION aguafina.com

s the holidays approach, this dining room in a Grosse Pointe home is the perfect spot for entertaining family and friends, thanks to the astute design work of Alexis Elley of Textures Interior Design in Grosse Pointe Farms. “My client is interested in color and exploring,” Elley says of the female homeowner, a busy attorney with three children who loves to entertain. “She loves color and prints, and is traditionally elegant. (She and her husband) have this big, beautiful, old, elegant home and they live in all of their rooms.” Classic appointments in the space, which won an award in this magazine’s 2023 Design Awards in the Traditional Dining Room category, include original millwork, a chandelier, and sconces, which all “keep the integrity of the house,” Elley says. Everything sings against a Benjamin Moore Chantilly White paint color. “The only thing the client requested was green, glossy wall paint. She didn’t want a drab dining room; she wanted it to pop,” says Elley, who chose a vibrant, snappy Benjamin Moore shade called Garden Green. “We used such a high-gloss finish that we had to time the application with the weather.” They needed to be able to keep the windows open to help keep the air fresh and to assist with drying time, as highgloss paints take longer to dry than semigloss or other types of paint. For the chairs, which the couple already had, Elley matched the green wall with a Mary Mcdonald black, white, and green fabric. She also brought in an animal print. “Animal print is a thing of mine,” Elley says. “Plus, that theme and the colors make the space sexier and less grandma-y.” A diamond pattern in the rug adds to the luxe feel. The table was discovered at an estate sale. “I had my painter refinish the base of the table in a black gloss paint and add gold trim detail,” Elley says. More eye candy includes a large painting by Colin Darke, who lives in the area. “The artwork adds a dash of modernity,” the designer says. “Her husband wanted to be able to entertain clients, plus they have a large family and she adores Christmas,” Elley continues. “The room is well-loved.”

The perks were plentiful at a spacious end-unit ranch condo facing a small lake, but the dated interiors were ready for a head-to-toe renovation. On the fix-it list for the Bloomfield Hills redo: a primary suite with a modest bathroom, a cramped and nondescript kitchen, and adding builder-grade architectural details. The owner at the time, who has since moved, wanted a spalike retreat that would maximize the views, and she brought in Birmingham-based MainStreet Design Build to handle the transformation. “It was such a fun job because we weren’t limited by only working in one room. We were able to create a completely new atmosphere with a whole new feel,” explains Christine Ramaekers, Certified Kitchen Designer and vice president of MainStreet. “We could create a very clean, warm, and serene feel throughout the whole home.”
ART OF THE MIX
Lit cabinetry, a gorgeous quartz countertop, and a creamy palette make the kitchen a true standout.
The layout was redesigned as needed, starting with the laundry room and kitchen. The end result is more efficient storage and a fresh aesthetic. A stackable washer and dryer made room for practical and pretty built-in pantries, as well as a comfy bench. In the kitchen, where the ceiling rises to accommodate an upper window that had to stay, the solution was brilliant. “Steve spent a good deal of time planning that,” Christine says about her husband, president and founder of MainStreet. “The beam structure gives a feel of continuity between the kitchen and the nook, so you don’t ever feel a change in ceiling height,” Steve Ramaekers adds. “The goal was to ensure continuity (within) the whole room.”
SMART SOLUTIONS

Because they were dealing with a condo, the team had to work around existing features, like windows. “In a home you might (not have to do) that, so it was a huge design challenge,” Christine says. It was a challenge they overcame with artistic vision and customization. Today, high-end appliances set the stage for an ultimate chef’s kitchen, where a waterfall island with a quartz countertop joins custom rift-cut white oak cabinetry sporting a glazed finish. The beam work was hand-finished to match. To give their client a wine cellar on the main level, the wall between the dining room and
kitchen was replaced with a three-sided glass refrigerated wine storage feature that provides a “wow” factor. “We’ve done a few great wine cellars, but not a divider with three sides,” Steve says. “It came out better than expected.” Also on the main floor, the great room/living room was completely gutted. The tall ceiling now benefits from custom coffered beams and crown molding, while built-in shelves flank the butterflied marble fireplace. “The coffered ceiling turned out pretty amazing,” Christine says. “It felt like the right thing for that room; it was so cold.” A cozy den was opened up for better visibility, and the nearby bathroom and guest bedroom
were completely overhauled. Barn doors separate the shower from the vanity, where a handmade wood-and-metal vanity, custom tile wainscoting, and grass cloth wallpaper provide a powder-room effect. “We separated that room with barn doors for guests because there isn’t a powder room,” Christine explains. Space was taken from the adjacent guest room for the primary suite, which had a small closet and bathroom. The new primary bath combines natural walnut wall-hung cabinetry with open shelving, a bench seat, and a feature tile wall. A unique light fixture contributes to the spa-like feel, while a separate toilet and shower room,

and a dressing area with handmade mirrored cabinetry, complete the personal space. The 1,500-square-foot walkout lower level is the perfect place to entertain, and a new bar that features a black patina and a brass railing takes center stage. A linear fireplace, meanwhile, pairs French concrete tiles with a limestone mantel and hearth. Unique pieces the new owner already had — such as a baby grand piano and a billiard table — personalize the area, which also has a spacious guest suite with a freshly remodeled bathroom. Distinct light fixtures and walls painted in soft, muted tones lend a luxurious feel throughout.

“This was definitely a collaboration between Steve, myself, our interior designer, Christopher Swint, and our whole design team,” Christine says. Not only did the extensive project add value for their original client, she notes, but it also increased the value for the new owner. The new owner was already familiar with the company’s work, so she felt confident about the quality of the renovation. All she had to do was add furniture from her former residence and fill in the blanks with her own finds to reflect her “rustic modern minimalism” aesthetic. “With my new condo, I tried to create a space that was harmonious with the renovation,” she says. “Many of the features, like the wine chiller and the marble wall in the living room, are the stars of the show. The furniture and décor needed to be clean and clutter-free, but rich in a mixture of materials and textures.” As an empty-nester with two grown kids, she says she was looking to simplify her life when she found the perfect fit. “I feel so lucky and grateful that this is my home,” the new owner says.

Matthew and Lori Schulz live in East Grand Rapids, but they wanted a retreat downstate where they could entertain their relatives and moor their boat during the warm summer months. They found a perfect corner-unit condo in Harrison Township on Lake St. Clair, but the décor wasn’t their style. Thanks to a recommendation from a mutual friend, the couple called Jennifer Asmar of Asmar Interiors in Troy to help them make their condo sing. “They wanted to transform the space so the second floor would feel like a luxurious hotel and the main floor would feel like a sophisticated lake house,” Asmar says.
BRIGHT IN WHITE
The homeowners wanted the main floor to feel like a sophisticated lake house. The goals were met, including in the kitchen.
Her deadline was daunting: She had from September of 2022 through the end of July 2023, when 70 guests had been invited to come and celebrate Matthew’s birthday. “It was a fun project,” says general contractor George Sommers of LaBelle Construction in Mount Clemens, who took the condo down to its bare bones and navigated the existing steel structure, masonry walls, and a narrow circular stairway. The condo’s square footage measures 1,023 on the top level, 916 on the main, and 916 on the ground. Asmar drew up her plans and quickly went to work. “I designed the whole condo, from the

layout to the last candle on the table,” she says. Asmar completely reordered the second floor’s confusing layout (guests had to walk through the master bedroom to get to the bathroom) by adding a new corridor leading to two ensuite bedrooms, each with walkin closets, plush king-size beds, and custom furnishings. They fit in a laundry room with lots of storage and, nestled into the balcony over the living room, they created an office area.
Heated porcelain floors throughout the condo keep things toasty when Michigan’s unpredictable chill sweeps over Lake St. Clair. On the main floor, there’s a handsome Calacatta Retro stone fireplace with a leathered finish. The chic furniture was custom made to fit the smaller-scale living room and dining area. A galley kitchen, with high-end built-in appliances, offers seating for four. There’s also a pretty powder room with custom cabinetry.
Lots more seating is found outside on the 28-by-27-foot patio, located through a doubledoor off the living area. With a fire pit and expansive lake views, it’s ideal for relaxing in the sun with a crisp chardonnay or enjoying an after-dinner brandy under the stars. filling coolers before getting on the boat that’s moored in the covered well below. Picnic tables provide even more outdoor seating. The “garage” also features a full bath with a hook-topped bench for hanging towels and beachwear, so guests can rinse off the day’s suntan oil or sunscreen. “It’s so convenient,” Lori Schulz says. “People can come in from a day on the boat, and they can change and shower right away.” Clearly, much thought about style and creature comforts went into this rebuild. Not a thing is missing. “It’s a tighter space than I’m used to designing,” says Asmar, who praises Sommers and the LaBelle crew for their expert workmanship and congeniality during the job, ensuring that all the niceties and necessities of the best luxury retreats fit neatly inside. “Lori gave me her list and I gave her my list,” Asmar says, adding: “I’ve grown up on the lakes around Michigan, so I really planned it so that it’s not only beautiful, but it’s functional for their needs.”

Amazingly, Asmar and Sommers’ crew made their 10-month deadline, and on the day of Matthew’s big birthday bash, the condo was ready! Guests arrived and the party began, the food was great, everyone had a fabulous time, and this condo’s debut was perfect in every way, right down to the last detail!

The late architect Robert C. Metcalf’s Midcentury Modern designs are prized and esteemed around Ann Arbor, metro Detroit, and beyond. Over four decades, he designed more than 150 homes, churches, and other structures. Only one of his homes can be found in northwest lower Michigan, and it’s on Crystal Lake near Beulah. The owner — social demographer and professor emerita at the University of Michigan, Lois M. Verbrugge, and her late husband, U-M professor of aerospace engineering Elmer G. Gilbert — found the

beautiful piece of land on Crystal Lake and convinced the celebrated architect to design a home for them. The professors were colleagues of Metcalf, U-M dean of architecture and urban planning, and they already owned one of his homes in Ann Arbor, so they were drawn to the architect’s phenomenal attention to detail. “Metcalf was a humble man,” Verbrugge remembers. “Elmer and Bob were very like-minded people. Both were engineers, detail people.” For the Crystal Lake home, the couple wanted something simple, unpretentious, comfortable, informal, close to the lake, and with easy access to outdoor activities. The architect designed a three-bedroom, two-bath, 2,046-square-foot house, which was built between the fall of 1989 and the spring of 1990 on 180 feet of frontage along the north shore of the lake. “Many people like the south side of Crystal Lake,” Verbrugge says, “but we liked the north side for the weather — it’s more dynamic in all seasons.”

THE LAKE IS CALLING
Both pages, clockwise from above left: The architect made the most of water views in this home, in one of three bedrooms, along an upper walkway, in one of two bathrooms, and in a convenient study area.
The open-format main floor includes a great room with high wood beams and skylights, a wall of windows showcasing the sparkling lake, tile floors, red oak trim, pocket doors, wood lattices, and a wall of Metcalf’s signature glass blocks along the front of the house. Built-in cabinetry and vibrant blue exterior doors are also a Metcalf touch. The master bedroom at the far end has sliding doors that lead out to the beach, while the upper floor features an open walkway that connects two office/study areas and a guest room. It’s the perfect layout for work, play, and guests. Even the detached garage with an attic was well-planned; it holds two cars, sports equipment, and garden tools. Both professors were avid outdoorspeople who enjoyed all that Crystal Lake and the nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offered. Gilbert died in 2019, and this past summer, Verbrugge decided it was time to simplify.

After much research into finding the right Realtor, she put the two-story, open-plan house, complete with its lightly-used and lovely Midcentury Modern furnishings (mostly teak and oak, and Knoll and Herman Miller), artwork, and original appliances on the market. Verbrugge knows the time is right, but her decision didn’t come lightly, and she hopes the next owner will appreciate the home, the lake, and the natural landscape as much as she and her husband did.
DESIGNS ON NATURE
Both pages: Blue exterior doors and block windows are quintessential Robert C. Metcalf. The clean, contemporary design allows the great outdoors to take center stage.
“This was Elmer’s soul place,” she says. “I will weep when I leave this house. It honors him. For me, it is irreplaceable beauty. I will never again in my lifetime have that experience — it will go with me for the rest of my life.” The original plans and early photos of this house can be found online at the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan, Metcalf Job 118-89. “If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun,” reads a dish featured in this newly-built Bloomfield Hills pool house. Designer Marianne Jones, principal at Marianne Jones LLC, says the whimsical accessory with the Katherine Hepburn quote inspired her, and is the perfect expression of the wife’s personality. “She’s very fun and has an irreverent streak that I love,” Jones says. Jones and Elle Tor, partner at Marianne Jones LLC, worked with the homeowners, architect Glenda Meads, and landscape architect Patrick Funke of Michael J. Dul & Associates on the project, which includes a new pool and a stone deck, pool house, and covered dining space with an outdoor fireplace/pizza oven.
ROOMS WITH A VIEW
Above: The homeowner wanted the pool house to be as low-maintenace as possible, including in the open and airy kitchen and living area.
The homeowners built the Shingle-style main house in 2017 and always planned to add a pool house, Funke explains. “Their children swim competitively, and they had always dreamed of having a pool, pool deck, and pool house.” That dream moved closer to reality in 2020, when the first planning meeting was held. Meads, who had just completed a pool house with Jones and recommended her for the project, says the goal for the pool house was to complement — as well as contrast — the main house, and envisioned it like a traditional garden “folly.” The homeowners wanted it to be as lowmaintenance as possible. “It was basically an

empty yard,” Meads says of the almost two-acre plot the team encountered at the project’s start. The Coronavirus pandemic prompted people everywhere to appreciate and reassess outdoor living spaces, Meads explains. The only challenge, she says, was getting a zoning appeal approved to accommodate the structure’s size of almost 1,700 square feet. Funke says the large, 30-by-75-foot pool also presented some siting challenges, including a drainage swale that had to be rerouted. That particular challenge led to the addition of a raingarden and native plants, which was a very positive outcome.
UNDER THE SEA
The bathroom sports a “really fun squid and octopus wallpaper,” designer Marianne Jones says.
“We were very mindful of the scale and the way people feel, maneuver, and transition around the pool,” Funke adds. The stone pool house, which references the material used on the main house, is one of the project’s many highlights. Meads says she worked with Dave Force, of Force Building Co., who the built the original house and was familiar with how to source the home’s granite stone. She had first imagined it as a luxurious hotel lobby, but says it evolved to something more like a luxury spa when the homeowners requested the addition of a golf simulator that required a 10-foot-tall screen. Popular with the family’s guests, it doubles as a movie screen and turns the space into an additional entertaining area. “It’s really fun at parties,” architect Meads adds. The pool house structure includes a kitchen, dining room, a changing room, and a bathroom, as well as a family room with beams and a fireplace,

BUYER’S GUIDE Jones says. For the interior, the designer took inspiration from the pool, and used a beautiful bluestone on the floor that’s the same as the outdoor deck surrounding it. Shiplap, marine references, and other motifs that fit the homeowners’ whimsical personalities add a light touch. “There’s a really fun squid and octopus wallpaper in the bathroom,” Jones says, as well as artwork by photographer Slim Aarons. The furnishings and surfaces were purposely kept neutral and lowmaintenance. A shabby chic sofa with slipcovers in performance linen, chairs covered in Sunbrella fabric, and an indoor-outdoor rug were selected to ensure durability — something the homeowners specifically requested. “They entertain all the time but didn’t want a lot of upkeep,” Jones explains. “Even the kitchen countertops are very forgiving.” The project was completed in time for the 2022 summer season. As expected, the new outdoor oasis and the pool house get a lot of use, Jones says, and are the stars of pool parties and family birthday parties. “The whole point was to bring the outdoors in,” she says of the inviting space. “When all the doors are open, you really feel like you’re outside.”

Interior designer Sissy Yellen recalls her childhood fondly, especially when she contemplates her bedrooms. “I had big opinions on the matter, even though I never really imagined growing up to furnish homes for other people,” Yellen says. “I had a very playful phase with bold colors in the ’90s — orange and hot pink color-blocking. Then I experimented with a more traditional look with whites, light pinks, sage, and florals. I was so adamant about what I wanted my space to feel like.
72
BARBIE X 2
Above: This twin room for school-aged girls pops with Barbie pizzazz.
In my teenage years I even tore up my carpet at one point because I favored the wood floors beneath it.” Today, Yellen runs Sissy Yellen Living from a recently built studio on her 1917 home’s property in Bloomfield Hills. She and her husband, Brandon Yellen, have three daughters (5, 3, and 1). Here, we look at six children’s spaces created by Yellen, including a room in the designer’s own home. PRETTY IN PINK
Lowdown: Yellen worked on the space (shown on the previous spread) for a young girl’s room, in addition to designing a baby brother’s nursery and the living room in this Bloomfield Hills brick Colonial.

Goal: To have the space grow with the young girl into her teenage years. “My goal was for the room to be timeless, with whimsical, luxurious, traditional, and interesting touches,” Yellen says. Homeowner/child request: “Pink, traditional, timeless,” Yellen says. Challenges: Not many, aside from COVID-era lead times. “There were also a few damaged items and we waited on a few replacement pieces. The room came together just shortly before the clients’ new baby arrived.” Designer’s faves: “The wallpaper panels, the unexpected pop of pink on the ceiling, and the monograms.”

A TREAT FOR TWINS

Lowdown: This twin room for school-aged girls in an historical Colonial in Bloomfield Hills is one of several rooms Yellen worked on; others include the living room, master bedroom, and library. “They’re dream clients!” Yellen says. Homeowner/children’s request: “Must be fun, and must have pink!” Challenges: Damaged items and COVID-era lead times. Designer’s faves: “The unexpected color palette that the flame-stitch fabric inspired. I can say I’ve never seen a room with pink, green, and yellow work so beautifully!”

SURPRISE NURSERY
Lowdown: This baby boy’s nursery in a Colonial new-build in Birmingham is one of many spaces Yellen worked on for these clients. The baby’s gender was a complete surprise for the parents. “I was able to install the room and lock the door until the baby was born,” Yellen says. Goals: “Whimsical, luxurious, cozy. I wanted to introduce a new color palette for a nursery that was still sweet, but cool and different,” Yellen explains. Homeowners’ request: “Have fun!” Challenges: “I created the stepped valance to cover the shape of the top of the window, which wasn’t lending itself to the style of the nursery,” the designer says. Designer’s faves: “The rug is the showstopper. I also love the stepped valance and the pillows.”

Rich corals and stunning blues create a dreamy mix for this nursery (and its bunnies) in designer Sissy Yellen’s own home. Over the past few years, three lucky babies have occupied this space.
GENDER-NEUTRAL WITH BUNNIES
Lowdown: The room shown here is in Yellen’s own home. “It was designed to be a flex-nursery for the many children I would eventually have,” the designer says. “It was to be the space where future clients might ask me, ‘Who designed your nursery?!’ — and the rest is now history. Three babies have occupied the space.” Goals: “I wanted to take some risks and practice incorporating a design element that I love. There are certain motifs in design that my children’s rooms are known for — including scallops, monograms, contrasting color palettes, pattern-mixing, and material-mixing.” Challenges: “Keeping it traditional in some senses, but also introducing some contemporary flare. That paid off, as I developed a sense of confidence when it comes to designing spaces for clients with different styles.” Designer’s faves: “The scalloped drapery, the bold colors, and the wicker accents,” Yellen says.

BABY-GIRL LUXURY
Lowdown: A transitional Colonial in Birmingham now has a beautiful nursery for a baby girl. Yellen also worked on the living room, foyer, and another nursery for a brother. Goals: “To create an elegant and comfortable nursery that could grow well with the child. I wanted to draw attention to the soaring ceiling and huge picture window. I accomplished this with the wallpaper selection, a huge motorized Roman shade with the most perfect grosgrain trim (it frames the window), and bedside sconces, which are like jewelry for the wall,” Yellen says.

Below: A cushy seating area for parents is a welcoming feature. The pretty wallpaper is perfect, drawing the eye toward the high ceiling and throughout the space.
“I HAD BIG OPINIONS ... EVEN THOUGH I NEVER REALLY IMAGINED GROWING UP TO FURNISH HOMES FOR OTHER PEOPLE.”
Homeowners’ request: The parents wanted a sweet and timeless space with high-quality materials. Challenges: Lead times for some of the pieces. Designer’s faves: “The custom linens, the mixture of velvet and beautiful pink prints, and the custom Sister Parish Teddy bear,” Yellen says.

Both pages: Dusty mauves, peaceful grays, and powder blues create a serene environment. That palette even shows up in the wallpaper, which is locally designed and printed by Housewife Essentials. Adults appreciate the tweed-y, Chanel-ish vibes.
CONTEMPO-COOL
Lowdown: The homeowners of a transitional Ranch-style home in Bloomfield Hills needed a great space for their new baby girl. Yellen also worked on the home’s foyer. Goals: “To create a fluid space that felt contemporary but also warm and cohesive in a ‘traditional’ sense. I achieve this by repeating floral motifs, the dusty mauve, gray, and powder blue color palette, and materials like acrylic.” Homeowners’ request: “Cool, contemporary, and cohesive.” Challenges: “None!” Designer’s faves: “The wallpaper, which is locally designed and printed, the funky custom side table, and the oversized light fixture.”

The real estate listing called the 1.5-story 1912 house on one of Pleasant Ridge’s prettiest streets a “classic California bungalow.” By the time Matt Anstett and Brad Stanwick purchased the 2,800-square-foot home they christened “Thistledown” in 2003, however, there were major structural issues and most of the original architectural details were long gone. “A lot of people told us to tear it down and start over,” Stanwick says. “It was an absolute nightmare, but we fell in love with it.” The couple was charmed by the home’s livable space and its long history. Built for $5,000 as a country house to get away from the nearby city, its early residents included some then-notable Detroiters. The fact that “absolutely nothing was original,” according to

Stanwick, meant the couple had a clean slate. While the house is technically Craftsman in style, Anstett and Stanwick — who own The Parson’s Nose Antiques in Oak Park, which specializes in British antiques — decided to go with a more classic English aesthetic. “I’m an Anglophile,” Stanwick admits. “I just love dark oak.” The pair had renovated rentals in Ferndale, so they had some experience going into the project. Over the next two decades, they took their time planning and executing renovations as their time, energy, and budget allowed. Early efforts included the design and installation of

English-style gardens and the dining room, where the outline of original paneling under the dated wallpaper inspired the room’s new paneling and beams, as well as the home’s overall aesthetic direction. They brought in friend and interior designer John Rattray, of Ferndale-based Craighall Interiors, when they moved to larger elements of the project, including the handsome Englishinspired kitchen. The trio first met 15 years ago, when Rattray bought some antiques from Stanwick for his own home and they discovered
a mutual love of English country house style. “My aesthetic is super informed by Brad,” the designer explains of the ensuing friendship and longtime collaboration, which eventually included traveling to Europe on buying trips and to tour country houses, as well as gathering to watch “Downton Abbey.” Design inspiration came from near and far, Rattray says, including classic English country houses such as Haddon Hall, in Derbyshire, as well as Meadowbrook Hall, Cranbrook, and the Ford houses closer to home.
The combination of interests and talents was a good fit. “John is amazing at layout and space planning,” Stanwick says. “It all blends seamlessly. That’s the beauty of having a designer, but John is particularly good at it.” Touring the house, it’s hard to believe the millwork, paneling, and other interior architecture isn’t original. “Our goal was to make everything look like it had always been there,” Anstett explains. In the kitchen, that meant removing an avocado-green “Brady Bunch” double oven and other 1970s souvenirs.

SWEET DREAMS
Both pages: For the primary bedroom, many pieces were procured from The Parson’s Nose Antiques, including the armchairs, chest, and artwork.
“Matt loves cooking and needed a working kitchen,” Stanwick shares. “He’s the youngest of seven kids, and we host a big Christmas party every year where everyone ends up in the kitchen.” Highlights of the handsome space include a large marble-topped island, lower cabinetry, a heated flagstone floor, and a traditional hearth room, which replaced a dated 1970s sliding glass door. It’s become the couple’s favorite place to enjoy their morning coffee, overlooking the gardens. “We just gutted these spaces and completely redesigned them,” Rattray says.

The kitchen renovation alone took more than a year, Rattray says. They worked within the home’s original footprint, but some rooms were moved or reworked to make the layout more efficient. A side deck became a new boot/mud room and flower area. Rattray recommended moving the primary bath to a former den, now a light-filled space where a large cast iron tub looks out over the lush backyard. Matching vanities were cut from a period 17th-century English table and topped with classic marble that’s also featured in the custom-slab marble shower. The nearby primary bedroom, once “all carpeted and pink and light green,” Anstett says, now features a large tester bed made in England that looks straight out of a Dickens novel. It took a year to make, Rattray explains. “We were going to do curtains but felt like that might be too much,” he adds with a laugh. The old primary bath, meanwhile, became a spacious closet. Not surprisingly, the inviting spaces throughout the home include carefully curated art and enviable imported antiques. “I’m super interested in Chinese porcelain right now,” Stanwick says. “It’s all over the place.” Future plans include finishing the living room, including a new limestone fireplace

surround and adding paneling that matches the rest of the rooms, and building a new carriage house with an attached greenhouse. The pair still laughs about the old 2003 real estate listing, which also extolled the virtues of the house’s “large covered porch for lazy summer days.” “I can tell you there haven’t been any lazy days since we bought the house,” Anstett quips. Rattray says the couple’s patience and their devotion to detail is unusual — and refreshing. “It’s worth mentioning just how much love and care they put into the house,” the designer says. “They were willing to take the time and (make sure they had the) funds to do the right thing, including reconditioning/replicating original windows and doors, selecting quality materials and hardware throughout, and waiting for specialty contractors, rather than just rushing out and cutting corners to see the whole project completed at once.” That was the plan all along, the couple says. “We really took our time getting it right,” Anstett says of the finally-almost-complete renovation. It took a lot of vision and a lot of money, but Stanwick says they have no regrets. “I can’t think of anything we would do differently. It will never have to be redone because it won’t go out of style. We eat mac and cheese every night,” he jokes, “but it was worth it.”

JUST FUR HER
Safari vibes aplenty fill this cozy living room in a Grosse Pointe Park home, thanks to the vision of designer Amy TerMarsch.
A N I M A L AT T R A C T I O N Garnering high honors in the 2023 Detroit Design Awards, this makeover’s story has a connection to the Detroit Zoo
A
TEXT BY MEGAN SWOYER | PHOTO BY JOE TIANO
as an avid animal lover and Detroit Zoo volunteer, Amy TerMarsch’s client wanted the living room in her Grosse Pointe Park home to feature some stylish animal vibes. TerMarsch, who owns 11-year-old Shelby Township-based Amy Elizabeth Designs, shares that the woman of the home wanted a place she could call her own (her husband has his space, too; it’s right off the living room through a side door). “Her goal was to get the most out of the space, which isn’t large,” TerMarsch says. Going on a veritable safari of sorts, the designer brought in a zebra-print rug from Ghiordes Knot at the Michigan Design Center in Troy, a cat wall sculpture, lamps with brass coiled-cobra bases, animalthemed decorative shelf accents, cheetah print mantel lamps, and a cheetah print-patterned ottoman. The botanical artwork
above the mantel was discovered in a small antiques shop at Eastern Market. TerMarsch also painted the walls, ceiling, and trim in fresh, crisp white (Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace) and changed out the drapery. “The previous window treatments were mauve, and there was that Wedgwood blue color popular in the 1980s and ’90s,” the designer shares. New, chic drapery in a black velvet, from Decoroom (in the Michigan Design Center), complements the space. The fireplace surround, meanwhile, is made of a sumptuous black herringbone tile from A.M. Tile & Marble in Sterling Heights. “She wanted a room that felt warm and cozy, because that’s her personality,” TerMarsch says. This makeover certainly accomplished that goal!
