bound for love IT’S OFTEN SAID THAT LOVE finds us when we least expect it. That we don’t find love, it finds us. As I reflect on the stories in this issue, that maxim seems truer than ever. Take, for example, Mohammed Udbin and Narissa Mursjamsi (page 76). Their story began in 2018 when Mohammed, who was on vacation in Bali, spotted Narissa in a café. They struck up a conversation and developed an immediate connection. Three years later — despite Covid delays and thousands of miles between them — they celebrated their marriage with a beautiful ceremony blending two vibrant cultures. Sarina Rose and Blake Zachary (page 44) are another couple who happened to be in the right place at the right time for love to bring them together. In July 2017, Sarina’s good friend asked if she wanted to go to a local bar with her because she was meeting a guy from online and she didn’t want to go by herself. Sarina said yes, and it turned out she made a decision that changed her life. She locked eyes with Blake from across the bar, and it was love at first sight for the couple, who tied the knot in September 2021.

However love finds you, there’s nothing better than celebrating it with a wedding that perfectly reflects your personality. Whether that’s an intimate elopement or an over-thetop affair, you’ll find a wealth of ideas in this issue to help you plan your day. From one-of-a-kind vintage rings (page 30) and boutonnieres that are works of mini floral art (page 34) to personalized wedding party gifts (page 26) and invitation suites for every style (page 37), the details of your wedding set the tone for an unforgettable celebration. If, when it's time to celebrate your love, you’d rather pack your bags and get away from it all — but you still want to look chic — turn to our cover story (page 64). Here you’ll find fashion forward looks for all your destination wedding events, from relaxing pool side in a cute bikini to walking down the aisle in a couture gown. Whatever your wedding style, I hope this issue helps make your dream day a reality. Cheers,

new and noteworthy WHAT'S NEXT AND NOW IN THE WORLD OF WEDDINGS

written by Giuseppa Nadrowski

The Touring Tap Once used for everything from farm utility and mail delivery to ice cream sales and meter readers, today the Cushman Haulster has found new life as The Touring Tap — a trendy mobile tap truck serving events (and beverages!) across metro Detroit. Discovered at a farm in Ohio, the 1979 truck was refurbished and transformed to house six chrome taps in its sleek Porsche-inspired chalk gray body. The Touring Tap officially launched in 2020, and this season, new owners Christopher Richmond and Jeffrey Fuller are excited to take the tap back on the road. “This is definitely a way to set yourself apart from other weddings,” Richmond says. “It really tends to be a conversation piece. And it’s just fun. We can get really creative with the types of drinks we serve, and we can have it really add a true value to an event.” Richmond and Fuller first discovered The Touring Tap at a graduation party last summer. It wasn’t long after that the duo decided to make it their own. This season, The Touring Tap returns to work ready to serve events of all sizes and styles. “We can have up to six drinks [on the truck],” Richmond says. “Anything you can get in a keg we can put into the truck for

22

Metro Detroit Weddings

022-23_DetailsWedcetra_MDW_SF2022.indd 22

your event.” Per Michigan law, liquor licenses cannot be sold to mobile bars, so while The Touring Tap can’t sell alcohol drinks by the glass or keg, they will install the kegs you purchase on the truck, help you source where to purchase them, and even help design your drink menu. There is also a variety of non-alcohol drinks that can be served — think lemonades, teas, ciders, coffees, and even craft sodas. “Despite being small, we can also serve quite a few people,” Richmond says. “There really is no minimum ... but once we get to 200 to 250 people, we definitely recommend having one to two tap tenders.” Self-serve packages are ideal for those events with fewer than 100 guests. Tap tenders can be added to packages of any size to help alleviate lines and assist with pouring drinks. The Touring Tap can also be styled to fit into any theme with options to provide custom cups that feature a signature design or logo. “Where we try to really focus on setting ourselves apart is just the experience from start to finish,” Richmond says. “Whether that’s helping to design a drink menu, helping to decorate the actual truck itself, or the set up and the dismount, we just want to make things really easy for our clients.” For more information, visit thetouringtapmi.com

Salud Shivani Kothari and Anne Goering are redefining the bridal industry with their recently launched month-to-month wedding planning subscription service, Salud. Plans start at $80 a month and include a wedding planner, virtual meetings, vendor recommendations, design assistance, an online planning portal filled with spreadsheets and planning guides, and unlimited advice via email. “Wedding planners are worth their weight in gold,” Kothari says. “But only if the budget allows. We designed our plans to be financially flexible to accommodate all types of budgets.” Kothari, a former Michigan-based wedding planner, met Goering while attending the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business graduate program. Salud, which first began as a class project, is now changing the way couples across the country plan their big day. “Before we started our business, we would hear how our team of wedding planners would spend so much time focusing on sales and marketing strategies to attract clients,” Kothari says. “We've put a lot of thought into how we cultivate the couple-planner relationship so when it comes time for the couple to hire someone for in-person coordination services, asking if their Salud wedding planner is available is naturally their first move. The couple has someone they can trust, and our planners are able to showcase their talents through the couples they work with through us so it's easier to get booked.” For more information visit, momentstosalud.com

PĪFERI Known for his sculptural animal-free shoes, Italian footwear designer Alfredo Piferi took to New York’s Bridal Fashion Week to debut his muchanticipated vegan bridal collection. This latest lineup features the brand’s beloved BIOVEG-certified Bio Vegan Nappa (which is composed of 48 percent bio polyols derived from non-food and GMO-free field corn) and each is handmade in Italy. Brides looking for a more eco-friendly footwear choice are sure to discover a style that fits their look. We love the chic crystal embellishments and the sleek minimal silhouettes. “When somebody says ‘I do’ in your shoes, you become their brand for life,” the designer says in a statement for the new line. “And to dress a bride on her wedding day is something that honors me.” For more information, visit piferi.com

Flowers for Dreams Michigan Flower Barn DIY flower fanatics rejoice! This year Josephine Brown, a co-owner of the Brown Family Farmstead in Owosso, launched the Michigan Flower Barn, a wholesale market collective providing designers and florists a diverse selection of slow-grown cut flowers and foliage from farmers across midMichigan. Couples looking to design their own wedding or bridal shower arrangements will love the MFB’s DIY Blooms by the Bucket service, which provides brides and grooms access to flowers that are 100 percent Michigan grown and harvested. Offered during Michigan’s peak growing season, generally between May and October, MFB is “super excited to provide this outlet to more people who are interested in sustainable floral options,” Brown says. Couples can pick up their blooms and design with their bridal parties at home or even onsite at the barn. For more information, visit michiganflowerbarn.com

Flowers for Dreams, the beloved boutique flower shop known for not only their stunning farm-fresh bouquets but their contributions to local charities, has much to celebrate this year. As of April, “we’ve raised more than $1 million for 175 amazing small nonprofits in Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee, where we operate,” says founder Steven Dyme. “Charity is not an extracurricular activity. It’s not something you do after work or on the weekends like the corporate generation before us. We think it's important to build it into our everyday DNA. We want to pave the way for an ethical, craft flower movement nationwide. For the more thoughtful flower lovers and green thumbs to enjoy their blooms without the same negative waste, climate, or labor externalities. Offering a more local approach, small batch production, higher wages, and a full circle model that gives back with every sale, we hope to give a more social conscience to an industry that hasn't always been known for that.” At Flowers for Dreams, one fourth of all flower profits are donated to local charities. For more information, visit flowersfordreams.com

The Evermore Floweret For brides looking to preserve their wedding day florals, look no further. This past April, Levering-based Shawna Mang launched The Evermore Floweret, a modern floral preservation company. From ring holders to bookends, coasters and other decorative designs, Mang’s resin creations are a stunning way to preserve some of your most cherished memories. “I opened The Evermore Floweret because as Monet said, ‘I must have flowers, always, always,’” Mang says. “Flowers have a profound way of connecting people to each other and to their most precious memories and moments. With Evermore, I am able to preserve those blooms for people to look back on and see in their day-to-day life. Wedding dresses get tucked in the back of the closet, and photo albums set in drawers, but the functional floral art that I create is meant to be used and displayed, the flowers and memories kept evermore.” For more information, visit theevermorefloweret.com

love bites ARTISANAL CHARCUTERIE ELEVATES YOUR WEDDING MENU

written by giuseppa nadrowski “I HAVE ALWAYS loved entertaining,” says Victoria Cummings, owner of Detroit Charcuterie Co. “Whenever I would host, I would always make a charcuterie plate.” From grazing tables, classic boards and crudite platters to her popular charcuterie cups and her must-try mini boxes (“You can think of them like an adult Lunchables,” Cummings says), her one-of-kind creations are both a culinary delight and exquisite in presentation. “It has to taste great, but you also want it to look good,” Cummings says. “It should be a conversation piece.” During the pandemic, it was the idea of “elevating the everyday” that drew Cummings, who always loved creating charcuterie, to truly perfect her boards. “[My husband and I] still wanted to feel fancy, so we started cooking and entertaining for ourselves.” Soon after, she says, “I was making these charcuterie trays and friends and family started wanting them. So, I started thinking, maybe I could do this?” In February 2021, she officially launched Detroit Charcuterie Co. Her passion for the field is evident in the excitement she finds discussing the various meats and cheeses she discovers at local specialty shops. Westborn

Market, Mongers’ Provisions, DeVries & Co., and Randazzo Fresh Market are a few of her favorites. “We really take into consideration how everything is going to pair on the board,” Cummings says. For clients looking for something other than the traditional, she also offers vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free options. “What I try to focus on most is creating quality products and having exceptional customer service.” Crafting a board or platter to suit an event is just one example of the incredible services she provides. For weddings, Cummings says, “you can’t beat grazing tables, they just look

stunning when you walk into a room.” Because of the scale, she says “it allows you to have more creative expression.” Her “itty bitty baby boxes” have also become a hit with brides and bridal parties looking to add an elegant treat to their wedding morning prep. “I’m just always amazed because to me it was just something so simple that we were doing at home but that people really wanted to incorporate into their events,” Cummings says. “It makes you feel like you are doing something special, and I think that aspect is what has really drawn people in.” Learn more at detroitcharcuterieco.com

John Rios Facetime Caricatures

above and beyond UNIQUE ENTERTAINMENT TO WOW YOUR GUESTS

written by blake miller WHEN IT COMES TO WEDDINGS, sometimes bigger isn’t necessarily better — but being unique always is. “As we head into the 2022 wedding season, now more than ever, couples are looking to celebrate with their loved ones in more unique and engaging ways,” says wedding and event planner Jessica Dawn, owner of Fear No More Events. “Now that we can truly celebrate with our loved ones, we are finding that the traditional classical music during cocktail hour and a reception could be a thing of the past, and incorporating elements such as dueling pianos or live painters are in. Whether it’s an intimate elopement or a black-tie affair, guests are looking for a more interactive experience that keeps them engaged and entertained throughout the evening, and we are here for it.” And no type of affair is off limits. “New ideas and experiences go at any type of wedding,” says wedding and event planner Meeka Hughes of Leave It To Meeka. “Black-tie weddings can be just as repetitive as non-formal events. Wedding guests and couples alike are ready to be entertained in a unique way, especially after Covid restrictions and lifting mask mandates.” And no need to think small. “Some of the unique experiences I have seen at weddings were circus acts complete with fire dancing and aerial antics, tea parties, a live artist painting portraits and even an on-site tattoo artist,” Hughes says. Here are some top unique entertainment options that will enliven any cocktail hour or reception and leave your guests fully wowed.

Treat guests to personalized caricatures while noshing on hors d’oeuvres and sipping on specialty cocktails. Artist John Rios draws his caricatures on custom printed-paper featuring the wedding couple’s names and wedding date as the ultimate keepsake for guests. “Caricatures spark conversation and make not only great entertainment but an amazing personalized gift from the bride and groom,” he says. Better yet, with a photographer on hand, guests are photographed photo booth-style with their caricatures so that the bride and groom can see them post-wedding day. “The bride and groom are always so busy at the event they don’t really get to see the caricatures,” he says of the offering. And for larger events, he has two artists on hand to draw as many caricatures as needed. Starting at $125 per hour. facebook. com/johnriosfacetime

Metallic envelopes added to the playfulness of the suite, with the cool turquoise envelope balancing out the warm hues of the paper goods. I really wanted to show that your wedding invitations should truly be a reflection of your personality, even if that’s not necessarily what’s traditional or trendy.”

Autumnal Garden Party Designed by Erin Braun | Engraving by Focus & Light “With this garden party inspired invitation suite, I wanted to represent the transition between summer and fall in Michigan in an artistic and sophisticated way,” Erin Braun says. “I drew inspiration from bountiful and textural gardens filled with dahlias, along with rust tones found in fall foliage and wood burning fires. Layers of texture were built through blind deboss and letterpress on white cotton paper, laser engraving on Michigan cherry wood, and hand cut paper appliques.”

Artful Architecture | Designed by The Ambrosia Rabbit “This suite was inspired by the Guardian Building’s art deco design and its iconic geometrical architecture and bold colors,” says Tiffany Harold of The Ambrosia Rabbit. “The show-stopping envelopes were custom cut to reflect the silhouette of the Monel metalwork screen in the lobby, and the enclosure cards were designed with a gold foiled arched trim to reflect the semi-circular domes found in the Banking Hall and over the main entrance. The invitation itself is mounted on an emerald cut green backing, inspired by the octagon mosaic shapes found in the ceiling, and it has subtle blind embossed lines running along the edging. Each piece in this suite contains elements that were double or triple mounted to create a layered effect to create the same enfilade visual impact that you get when you enter the Guardian Building and see the lining up of architectural elements and spaces for one complex and rich vista.”

Modern Color Block Designed by LePenn Designs “Using the venue, The Detroit Institute of Arts, as the inspiration, I incorporated a modern art-inspired pattern into the suite along with an array of bold and colorful papers,” Le’Trice Penn says. “The main invitation is triplexed with three different paper colors and features the pattern as a blind debossed background along with white foil stamping on top of it. A blind debossed monogram is also featured on the backside of the invitation as an unexpected but fun detail. More pattern play is shown in printed form on the insert card and envelope liner, and the inspiration from the modern pattern is continued with the custom die-cut shape of the second insert card.”

Regency Reimagined | Designed by Leah E. Moss Designs “Using the romantic, soft lines reminiscent of Regency-era England, as we’ve all come to love from watching Bridgerton, I kept this invitation delicate and ornate,” Leah E. Moss says. “The motif on the main invitation card pairs beautifully with the repeat pattern in the envelope liner tucked softly into a translucent wrap tied with a silk ribbon. Traditional calligraphy was used for the invitation design and envelope addressing. This classically sophisticated design is timeless but brings in a 21st-century color palette with dusty rose and terracotta, paired with cream and blush. This suite, along with a series of others, makes its debut as part of my collection this summer. Personalize your own with colors, print methods, and bells and whistles, to make your dream combination.”

love at first sight WAS IT CHANCE OR LUCK THAT BROUGHT A YOUNG COUPLE TOGETHER?

written by blake miller photography by jean smith photography SARINA ROSE was only trying to be a good friend. Back in July 2017, a close friend asked her if she wanted to go to a local bar because she was meeting a man she met online and she didn’t want to go by herself. “So, of course, I went with her even though I don’t love the bar scene,” Rose says. As it turned out, she made a decision that would change her life. “I walked in and said, ‘Is this what you guys do at a bar? You sit and wait for a guy to approach you?’” Rose says. Not long after, she locked eyes with “a super attractive, tan man. We kept making eye contact.” Within minutes, she was introduced to Blake Zachary, and the pair quickly became enamored with each other. “We opened up so quickly to each other,” Zachary recalls. “We became best friends very quickly.” While their relationship began quickly, the road to their engagement was a bit slower. As the 2020 Christmas holiday approached, Rose was hoping for a ring. “We just bought a house at the end of 2020, and he kept telling me that he promised we would be engaged by the end of 2020,” Rose says. “So it was always in the back of my mind.” After a few bumps in the road, Zachary proposed on December 23 — “Way to cut it close,

“Ever since I met Blake, he’s been home to me,” says Sarina Rose. The couple celebrated their marriage in September 2021 with a ceremony at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament and a reception at Meadowbrook Country Club.

Blake!” Rose says with a laugh. The couple quickly began wedding planning with a date set for September 2021, just nine short months after their engagement. During that time, Rose’s godfather, Chris Jeannotte, and his partner, Steven Weingartz, threw the couple an epic Great Gatsby-themed bridal shower with roughly 175 guests at their home in Pleasant Ridge. “I wanted to make it a very magical night that Sarina wouldn’t forget,” says Jeannotte, who arranged for complete 1920s-themed décor top to bottom. The night was chockfull of entertainment, including swing dancers, a Charlie Chaplin impersonator, flappers, 1920s candy girls, and a live performance by Detroit’s Ben

46

Sharkey, all while mermaids floated in the pool. As guests entered the venue, they were greeted by a 1920s flapper girl whose dress was the red carpet of the event while swing dancers taught guests the proper way to swing dance. Guests noshed on filet, shrimp, orzo, asparagus spinach pie, and, of course, dessert: a Cassata cake with cannoli cream. “When we walked in we were both in complete awe,” Rose says. “It was memorable for us to see the amount of detail and creativity that went into this party, from the candy bar, the balloons and feathers, the special cocktails, the entertainers, the decor, the music, photographers, the rented out vintage car,

the videographer. It left us speechless. I knew it would be a beautiful shower, but we had no idea the content of what it was going to be. It was a stunning event shared with our families and friends that we will always talk about for years to come!” Their wedding day was just as memorable. Held at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit, the traditional Catholic ceremony preceded a reception at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville. “We both grew up going to this club,” says Rose of their choice. “Both our grandparents belonged for years. Blake’s parents got married there. So it was a special venue to us.” At the reception, guests enjoyed chargrilled filet with shrimp scampi in a lemon garlic white wine sauce and a three-tier coconut cake with lemon and raspberry buttercream from Maddie Bakes in Birmingham. After dancing the night away, the couple embarked on their new life as husband and wife. “Our wedding day was a day we shared our commitment to each other under God in front of our closest friends and families. Marriage has a mystical way of revealing God, a way of bringing a smiling peace to our restless hearts,” Rose says. “Ever since I met Blake, he’s been home to me.”

Despite pandemic delays and nearly 10,000 miles between them, Mohammed Udbin and Narissa Mursjamsi's families came together for a March 2021 wedding that brought their two worlds together.

TWO VIBRANT CULTURES

merged together at the wedding of Mohammed Udbin and Narissa Mursjamsi, who married on March 28, 2021 at the Town Center Garden Atrium in Southfield. The intimate 50-guest ceremony was an event several years — and thousands of miles — in the making. Mohammed, whose family is from Bangladesh, and Narissa, who was born and raised in Indonesia, met while Mohammed was on vacation in Bali in 2018. He spotted her in a café, they struck up a conversation, and the pair developed an immediate connection. The strong bond remained even after Mohammed returned home to Michigan. The couple continued to talk and meet up in various parts of the world, including Japan and South Korea — the latter being where Mohammed proposed to Narissa in 2019. In Narissa’s culture, it’s customary to ask the bride’s family for permission, so the couple headed to Indonesia to do so. Soon after, Mohammed and Narissa began planning for a September 2020 wedding. However, the onset of COVID-19 — combined with the nearly 10,000 miles between them — provided some unique challenges. “We thought everything would go as planned, we’d have a ceremony, our reception, and we were also planning to

go to Indonesia and do a party with her family,” Mohammed says. “Fast forward, 2020 came, COVID came, and shattered all dreams and hopes for a lot of us.” Despite everything in their way, the couple found that they grew closer together during this time as they developed strong communication with one another and discovered that there was a solution to every problem. “With our planning, there were a lot of problems that we faced, but both of us remembered that no matter the problem, we have to find a solution and focus on that,” Narissa says. “That’s how we handled problems together, and now here we are.” As COVID-19 cases started decreasing, the couple decided on a new date in March, at a time when their families could safely travel to Michigan. With both families able to come together for this special day, Mohammed and Narissa wanted to ensure that they wove in traditions from each of their cultures. For example, they both wore traditional Bengali attire at the ceremony, though Narissa highlighted her own culture and opted for a white sari instead of red or pink. In keeping with Indonesian wedding culture, they had a moment between Mohammed and Narissa’s father where a blessing was exchanged and Mohammed expressed

The intimate celebration incorporated elements of Bangladeshi and Indonesian culture. "For any couple getting married from different cultures, it’s important to combine both to show how great the world is,” Mohammed says.

his commitment to Narissa. Following the ceremony, the couple honored Bangladeshi tradition and participated in a fish cutting ceremony where the groom brings the bride a fish, which she then prepares. From the beginning of their engagement to the last moments of their wedding, the couple ensured that each of their backgrounds was beautifully represented in their celebration of love. “For any couple getting married from different cultures, it’s important to combine both to show how great the world is,” Mohammed says. “We showed that we can bring two worlds into one place and enjoy it together. It can be very magical if that approach is taken.” V EN D O R S Reception Venue: Town Center Garden Atrium, Southfield Photographer: Mahin Traditional Attire: Kebaya by Karina Hair: Hair by Aysha Makeup: J Hobby Makeup Studio Wedding Bands/Jewelry: Lino & Sons, and Festive Essentials Flowers: Wafaa’s Flowers Videographer: TTL Production
