s ’ g u H Desk
First, let me explain. I was the youngest of seven (and a surprise to boot) and Mom named me Hugh Gilford Bennett. The oldest brother of the clan, Tom, upon seeing my name remarked, “Huh. Looks like Hug.” and the name stuck. Many of you who know me are pretty sure its not really a personality thing. But I like hugs. This is the inaugural issue of HouseHunterETC. HouseHunter is morphing into a community magazine with a home and real estate emphasis. We intend to add color and life to our slice of Heaven here in Northeast Wyoming. Let’s be honest, Wyoming is a small town. Think about it. With only about half a million people, we’re at the BOTTOM of the population chart of all 50 states. We’re fewer people than Puerto Rico and Washington DC, and WAY bigger in size than either of them. That means we have the most US Representatives (One) and Senators (Two) per capita of any state in the U. S.! That’s not bad. No crowds! It means if you want it’s not that hard to get face time with your mayor or US Congressman. Try that in New York or California! Those among us that have left and returned or been here for any length of time appreciate the many benefits of life here - low crime, great public services, good roads, and generally friendly people. If you see two trucks stopped on a dirt road across from one another blocking traffic, why that’s just a Wyoming business meeting. If you don’t wave as a stranger drives past on a quiet street - you may have snubbed someone. That takes a bit of adjustment for those of us from a more metropolitan background, but it’s a step up in my opinion. We hope you enjoy the features and stories we’ve added beginning with this first issue of HouseHunterETC. We welcome and encourage ideas for content in future issues - we’re as new to this as you are and can surely use the feedback. We’ve begun one new feature that can bag dinner for two for you and a friend at Pokey’s this month - the Mystery Question. The question appears at the bottom of this column and the answer is concealed somewhere in this issue - you may have to look pretty hard, it could be small or hiding in plain sight. Enter to win by email on our website by the 15th of January and the winner will then be chosen at random from all the correct answers and notified by phone, so be sure to include your phone number in case you win! Enjoy this issue and pass it on to a friend. See you here next month. Hugh Bennett, Editor Mystery Question: Is it easy to tell a fighter pilot?

Resolutions For Your Home Many people feel a new calendar year symbolizes a fresh start. Perhaps nothing illustrates that better than the popularity of New Year’s resolutions, which people make in an effort to improve their quality of life both in the year ahead and the years that follow. Popular plans include resolving to lose weight or quit smoking. Homeowners can make resolutions for their homes as well. The following are some resolutions to ensure your home has a good year! * Clear away clutter. Spring is the season most people associate with clearing a home of clutter, but the immediate aftermath of the holiday season marks a great time to begin tidying up. During the
This year, resolve to turn the lights off when you leave a room, lower the temperature on the thermostat during daytime hours when no one is home and consider alternative methods of saving energy as well. Most homeowners might be surprised to learn their cable or satellite boxes, when coupled with a digital video recorder, are quite possibly gobbling up more energy than their refrigerator. Such was the findings in a 2011 study conducted by the Natural Resources Defense Council, which found that a highdefinition cable or satellite set-top box, when combined with a DVR, used more kilowatt hours per year
fallen branches and rake away the last of the leaves, which can be used to create a compost pile that can benefit the lawn throughout the year. Depending on the type of grass you have, late winter and early spring can be a great time to fertilize. * Make your home safer. Improving safety around the house should not have to be a New Year’s resolution, but for busy homeowners it’s easy to overlook safety around the house. This year, resolve to make your home safer and keep it safe and secure. Have the home tested
Improving safety around the house is one resolution homeowners can make over the next 12 months. holiday season, homeowners often arrive home to a mailbox filled with holiday catalogs. In addition, extra rolls of wrapping paper, packaging tape and holiday cards can transform a normally neat and airy home into a cluttered space with little room to breathe. Instead of waiting for spring to clear out clutter, resolve to spend some time each month getting rid of any unnecessary items. Not only will less clutter make a home less stuffy, it will also make spring cleaning that much easier. * Reduce the energy bill. Few people are in a position to scoff at ways to save money, and reducing energy costs is a great way to do just that. PAGE 10
than a new Energy Star rated 21 cubic-foot refrigerator. While few homeowners are likely willing to give up their cable service or DVR, you can ask your service provider for Energy Star 4.0-rated devices to help reduce energy consumption. * Grow a green thumb. A lawn is the first thing passersby notice about a home. No matter how beautiful the home itself is, if the lawn is not well-maintained that is what most people are going to remember. This year, resolve to grow a green thumb. Though spring and summer are considered the seasons for lawn care, winter is not necessarily a bad time to get started. Clear away any www.HouseHunterEtc.com
for radon if you haven’t already, and inspect all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, replacing any that are no longer operating at full capacity. If there are any safety hazards around the house, such as a loose step or handrail on the staircase or a leaky gutter that makes it easy for ice patches to form after winter rain or snowstorms, then address these issues before they cause serious injury. New Year’s resolutions don’t just apply to humans. Make the most of this year’s fresh start by making your home a happier, healthier and safer place to live this year and in the years to come. ∑ JANUARY 2013

Can You Lower Your Property Paying property taxes is a necessary side effect of home ownership. Across the United States and Canada, residents are required to pay property taxes based on an assessment of their homes’ value. Taxes on land and the buildings on it are one of the biggest sources of revenue for local governments. In the United States, property taxes are not imposed by the states, but by the smaller governing bodies in cities, towns, townships, counties, and other jurisdictions. In Canada, property taxes, or millage taxes, are levied by the jurisdiction in which the property is located. They may be paid to a federated state or a municipality or the national government. Sometimes multiple jurisdictions may tax the same property.
e
m o H red u t a e F
Taxes?
Although the taxes are mandated by a higher governing power, the rate at which you pay taxes could be based on a very local assessment of the area in which your house is located and the current market conditions. An assessor will visit a home -- usually prior to purchase -- and make a determination on the percentage of tax to be paid depending on the condition of the home, the improvements that have been made and the climate of the economy in your particular town or city. Property taxes are usually calculated by taking the assessed value of your home and multiplying it by the tax rate that has been determined by your local government. While no one can “legally” escape paying property taxes, there are
several ways to have them lowered. Getting your home re-assessed is one such way. Individuals who have reached a certain age may be eligible for certain discounts on property taxes. But this may require a very low income to qualify. There are also some tax credits or homestead exemptions that may qualify you for a limited assessed value on the property. According to data from the Tax Foundation and Forbes, areas of New Jersey, New York and Illinois boast some of the highest property taxes. Residents of Hunterdon County, New Jersey paid on average $8,600 a year between 2005 and 2009. Those in Lake County, Illinois pay around $6,500. People living in Westchester County, New York can plan on spending $8,400 per year. Statistics indicate that homes

located in Ontario cities in central Canada have the highest property taxes. Toronto residents, for example, pay an average of $3,900. In this tough economy, lowering property taxes (which are generally rolled into the mortgage amount for ease of payment) could substantially reduce bills. As many as 60 percent of properties across the United States are over assessed, according to the National Taxpayers Union, a nonprofit group that promotes lower taxes. If you suspect your property taxes are high, here are the steps to take. • Get a copy of your property tax assessment from the local assessor’s office and double-check all the info contained to see if it is correct. • Check the assessments of five comparable homes that have sold in your neighborhood in the last 3 years. • An independent appraiser can also provide you accurate information at a cost. Make sure he or she is licensed with the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers or by the American Society of Appraisers. • It’s not possible to lower the

property tax rate, just the assessed value of the home through an official appeal. However, there may be fees associated with this appeal. Some home improvements will increase the value of your home and, in turn, your property taxes. Here are some of the most common culprits: - extra stories to the home - out houses, like a guest house - sports courts, like tennis - installation of an in ground pool - improvements to fencing - addition of a garage or another room on the home

A change in the status of a neighborhood can also give rise to higher property taxes. An influx of few residents or new construction of stores and homes can have a major effect on the assessed value of your home. ∑

…Where No Cowboy Has Gone Before
by Chris Morgan
We did it. Here we are. Two thousand and thirteen years after the resurrection of Christ, and there still isn’t a base on the moon. Pitiful. Absolutely pitiful. Just last year, while driving my beautifully degenerate ’98 Pontiac Bonneville, corrosion in the startercables prevented my car from turning over. I was pulled off Highway 59 at two in the morning on a January Saturday, and it was snowing like God had dandruff and an itchy scalp. I zipped up my pants and jumped back into the car—lo-and-behold, guess whose vehicle wouldn’t even gurgle? Wouldn’t even “click”? Wouldn’t even flicker the dashboardlights? That’s right, yours truly. I jumped out, jiggled the cables, cussed, ran angrily in place and blew into my freezing fingers, and finally resigned myself to my plight: freezing in the night. Oh, there was an electric blanket in the trunk—but guess who didn’t have electricity enough to use it? I’ll give you a hint: he’s got two thumbs and is using them both to interject spaces between the words in this article as he types. That’s right.
Page 16
This guy. So I jumped in the back seat, curled up in my non-electrified electric blanket, and shivered about eight pounds of body fat off me waiting for the dawn before a police officer showed up and gave me a jump. The battery was fine; it’s just the cables weren’t carrying the charge to the starter and blah blah blah, technical jargon, technical jargon, here’s the point: it’s 2012 as I write this, and I didn’t have a non-electric pocket heater that runs on atomic energy. I didn’t have an electromagnetic force field I could stick on top of my car to keep the snow off. I didn’t have a teleporter to zip me home; shoot, I didn’t even have an enslaved extraterrestrial with mind-powers to make me think I was warmer than I was. I didn’t have zilch, except my own body heat and a backseat. Essentially, all I had was all any person anytime anywhere throughout human history has ever had: my brain, my body, and space in which to employ them. Now many of you reading this know just how hopeless a situation that is; especially in Wyoming in the winter. Currently I reside in Colorful Colorado. Coming back to Wyoming is like jumping in a De Lorean, hitting eighty-eight miles an hour, and
www.HouseHunterEtc.com
traveling backward in time. Still, I love it. It’s the state of my birth. I became who I am in large part from being raised in Wyoming—and I love that. Wyoming’s one of the few states that is still part of the “frontier”. Natural gas, oil, coal; these are the new mediums of the Old West, where Euro pop is just starting to get big among twentysomethings that play hopscotch through the bars in the night—even though that particular musical fad has become defunct everywhere else in the world. And being sort of “rugged” like that, sort of “backward”— detached from mainstream mankind, if you will—makes the citizens of Wyoming some wiry, think-outsidethe-box kind of cats. One must be, in a place where the elements are as unforgiving as they are in Wyoming. Tourists and outsiders don’t realize exactly what it means when a road sign says: “Next service, 150 miles”. They don’t realize said sign actually describes an area of space between one municipality and the next that is totally devoid of human life. Just like the moon. So 2013’s upon us. The unluckiest year of many millenniums—not only is “thirteen” in it, that dire number is preceded by the hyphenated

Pokey’s IVES! …Where Elvis L
Pokey’s BBQ is the place for a taste of the Real Thing. Pokey’s infuses devotion and deliciousness into all their many succulent meats. Proprietor Ric Shuyler is a serious BBQ aficionado and purveyor of outstanding home-cooked recipes, with a lifelong fascination in the transformation of quality, fresh ingredients into a meal fit for a King. Ric had a dream. A dream to make authentic pit-smoked BBQ in Wyoming—and he chose Gillette! After 26 years in the mining industry, Ric pursued his dream full-time in 2006, and gave us Pokey’s. A lot goes into making real BBQ. One of the biggest factors in savory succulence is seasoned wood, which provides the heat and smoke to slow-cook pork ribs, prime rib, sausage, salmon, and numerous fine cuts of meat. From two to thirty hours on the
pit (for prime rib), Ric is continuously perfecting his recipes into the mouth-watering favorites that are becoming legendary. So where does “The King” come in? Elvis is the pit-smoker where magic happens. Elvis doesn’t run on gas or electricity; just a thermostatic-controlled damper that determines woodtemperature while a variety of succulent cuts slowly smoke to perfection. Elvis plays that meat like a custom guitar, till it crescendos through your mouth so harmoniously you might just howl like a hound-dog. It’s a whole lotta’ burnin’ love. And that BBQ Nirvana is available outside the restaurant! Pokey’s Catering Service is making rounds; from picnics to brandings and weddings—they’re so sought after they’ve become a favorite of headlining entertainers at Cam-Plex! Folks like Willie Nelson, Neil McCoy, Ronnie Milsap, George Jones, Kenny Rogers, and even Cheers alumni George Wendt. Oh, but Ric and Elvis aren’t done: probably the best place in Campbell County to get exotic meats is Pokey’s. From alligator to bear, mountain lion, too—there’s even python and a little kangaroo! Sure, there are short cuts—not at Pokey’s. Some of the choicest food in the country comes from Ric’s passion. You’ve got to try it. Treat yourself! Check out Pokey’s—and by golly, you better bring your appetite! Ric Shuyler - Owner & Master BBQ’er

Tips For Winter Beauty
Winter brings with it many things, including snowy days, chilly nights and the propensity for irritating beauty issues. Cold dry air outside and warm dry air inside can result in moisture loss from both the hair and skin. Not only can this be uncomfortable, but it can be unsightly as well. There are also other beauty issues that come up, like which products to use this time of year. The primary beauty concern for most each winter is dryness. Winter is the season for dry skin and chapped lips because lower temperatures and lower humidity result in drier air, both indoors and outside. Forced-air heating sources also contribute to the problem, especially if they are not equipped with some sort of humidity adding device. Dry skin becomes itchy and turns into a nuisance. Dry air can also contribute to dry hair. Dry hair tends to be flyaway and prone to static. Your entire body actually may be susceptible to static-related shocks as you traverse carpeting or pull on charged clothing. The low humidity adds to the separation of electrons and protons in the materials surrounding a person, which contributes to extra static electricity. Here are eleven tips that will benefit you and your appearance all season long.
1
Adding moisture to your environment is one of the single best ways to combat winter skin and hair issues. This means purchasing a humidifier that will put moisture to the air. Even boiling some water on the stove and allowing the steam to seep into the air can alleviate a dry home.
2
Dry skin can feel tight and itchy. It may or may not flake off as well. Dry skin that is consistently scratched could become irritated or even infected if bacteria gets into the PAGE 18
skin. Moisturizers applied all over the body can help the skin retain moisture and alleviate the itchiness. Creams with menthol could provide a cooling effect that also tames itchiness. But watch out for products that also contain alcohol. The alcohol might seem cooling at first, but the alcohol could eventually dry out the skin when it evaporates.
3
Experiment with your home’s thermostat to find an indoor temperature that is more comfortable for your dry skin conditions.
4
Very hot showers may chase away the chill from outdoors, but they can strip the skin and hair of moisture as well. Try showering in lukewarm water instead, and slather on a moisturizing body lotion right afterward.
5
Relying on an electric hair dryer to dry your hair after washing can compound dry, frizzy or unruly hair. It may be unwise to step outdoors on a cold day with wet hair, so leave ample time in your schedule to shower and allow hair to air dry whenever possible.
6
Licking dry lips just exacerbates the situation. Instead, use a moisturizing lip balm sparingly. Even rubbing a little olive oil over the lips can help moisturize and prevent cracking.
www.HouseHunterEtc.com
7
Choose non foaming cleansers for the face and body when washing up. This way the soapy layer doesn’t strip away essential moisture from the lipid barrier of the skin.
8
Be sure to continue to apply an SPF product every day before heading outdoors. Ultraviolet rays are still present during the winter, albeit in less concentration.
9
Avoid frosty eye shadows in the winter because they tend to make most people look washed out, especially when the glow of summer skin has waned. Similarly, avoid overdoing bronze during the winter months, which can seem out of place and make the skin look artificially orange.
10
Revamp hair color to bring out golden hues during the winter months and keep you looking vivacious. Avoid highlights that are white or ashy. Don’t go for more than two shades lighter or darker in any direction for a whole-head coloring.
11
Hat head is almost as dreaded as a bad hair day. Hat head occurs when damp hair has been allowed to dry under a hat, which then causes flattening and denting. Allow hair to dry completely before donning a hat. And consider parting your hair the opposite way before putting on the hat, so it will have volume when the hat is removed and hair falls naturally back in place. ∑ JANUARY 2013

REVITALIZE YOUR WARDROBE ON A BUDGET Clothing styles change on a whim according to what trend forecasters see as the “it” items of the season. People looking to keep abreast of certain styles or just maintain a fresh supply of different wardrobe options may find that replenishing a closet can be an expensive venture, but it doesn’t have to be. Those without a set budget may be able to afford monthly shopping trips to add new pieces to a wardrobe. However, the average person lives on a tighter budget, and there may not be as much room for discretionary spending on clothing and accessories. A family of three making about $64,000 per year can expect to spend roughly 4% of those earnings on apparel and services. People interested in refreshing their selection of clothing more frequently should consider alternative options. Here are some ideas to think about: Clothing Swap A good way to socialize and switchup a wardrobe is to host a clothing swap party. Invite around 10 friends or family members to be part of it. Be sure to have at least 2 or 3 of the samesized people so that there won’t be an abundance of items to fit one person and not enough to fit another. Shoes and accessories are also acceptable.
JANUARY 2013
Set the rules for the event, where each person is entitled to take as many items as she has brought. Encourage guests to bring clean, gently used items that are in good quality. Because this type of get-together involves some advanced work of sorting through clothing, be sure to give guests ample advance notice. Have refreshments on hand and opportunities to chat over styles and options. Whatever clothes are not taken by others can be donated to charity. Consignment Stores It used to be that consignment stores were the stepchildren of the retail world. Many people viewed them as glorified tag sales and didn’t think they were worthy of investigation. Nowadays, consignment shops are big business and good places for savvy shoppers to visit. Much like overstock stores sell items on discount that are on par with department stores, consignment shops often offer new or very lightly used items for resale -- at a fraction of the original retail price. Plus, they’re an ideal place to look for unique pieces and accessories that might otherwise have been out of budget. Shop Basics When buying new items at a store, buy pieces that can be put together
www.HouseHunterEtc.com
in a variety of combinations. Stick to similar colors and themes so that each piece will work seamlessly. Consider multi-layered items that can be worn with a cardigan or without; or go from the office to a dinner date afterward. Remember, items that blend can be worn more often because they won’t stick out in the minds of others. Consider Shopping Online Shoppers are often amazed at the wide variety of items that can be purchased online. If a shopper doesn’t see something in a store for the price she wants, she can comparison shop online. Although she can’t try on merchandise, with the exception of some sites that offer a virtual model, many online retailers offer free shipping on returns. Online shopping also takes the hassle out of visiting several stores, finding parking and dealing with crowds. Plus, a shopper can purchase things on her own time, whether that’s early morning or after the kids have gone to bed. Explore Tailoring Think about how Molly Ringwald’s character turned pieces of fabric into new creations in the 1980’s film, “Pretty in Pink.” With some simple tailoring, just about anyone can modify items to make them look brand new. For those who don’t know their bobbins from their seam-rippers, make friends with someone who does and enlist some help with fashion redesign. ∑

December 14th, Connecticut: A twenty-something psychopath shoots up an elementary school, killing over twenty people and wounding others. A familiar and deeply terrible tragedy. We’re right to be horrified, to do everything possible to prevent this happening again. We’re rightly distraught over the loss of these innocents. But politicians, celebrities and activists the world over steadily fight to undermine the rights of the unborn, murdering millions more. How can they grandstand and weep on camera for 20, but ignore the 40,000,000 infants killed for convenience?

Tech
Trends for
2013
Many once seemingly far-fetched concepts have become the technology of today. Scientists and engineers are continually developing technology that may make a place for itself in our daily lives. There is no limit to what people aspire to achieve. Mobile Devices In 2013, mobile phones are poised to overtake PCs as the most common Web access devices worldwide. By 2015, more than 80 percent of the handsets sold in mature markets will be smartphones. However, only 20 percent of those handsets are likely to be Windows phones. Estimates suggest that media tablet shipments will reach around 50 percent of laptop shipments by 2015, and Windows 8 will likely be in third place behind Google’s Android and Apple iOS operating systems. Because operating systems and platforms will expand beyond the monopoly once held by Windows, enterprises will need to support a greater variety. The implications for IT is that the era of PC dominance will be replaced with a new era where Windows is just one of a variety of environments IT will need to support. Personal Cloud The personal cloud will gradually replace the PC as the location where individuals keep their personal content, access their services and personal preferences and center their digital lives. In essence, personal cloud computing means having every piece of data you need for every aspect of your life at your fingertips and ready for use. Data must be mobile, transferable and instantly accessible. It also needs to be in sync to provide real-time access to files, photos and whatever else is being stored. Users will see the cloud as a portable, always-available place where they go for all of their digital needs. In this world, no one platform, technology or vendor will dominate and diversity and mobile device management will be imperative. The personal cloud shifts the focus from the client device to cloud-based services delivered across multiple devices. PAGE 28
The Internet of Things The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a concept that describes how the Internet will expand to physical items, such as consumer devices. That means elements of IoT will be included in other items besides handheld devices, such as mobile phones and tablets. Cellular technology and ability to access the Internet will appear in everything from wristwatches to smartposters to home entertainment systems. The IoT will enable a wide range of new applications and services while raising many new challenges. The public has already seen inklings of this technology in gaming systems and television sets that enable Internet connectivity. Expect these trends to expand. Rather than boasting even-bigger screen sizes and Ultra-HD capabilities, newer TVs are expected to all come with built-in broadband connections and smart, streaming media features.
Integrated Systems Consumers will be looking for a more cohesive system that is integrated rather than a bunch of dissimilar parts having to work together somehow. Driving this trend is the consumer’s desire for lower cost, simplicity and greater security. The trend could be played out in different ways. Appliances may combine hardware and software with services. Cloud-based marketplaces will be key, and there will be brokerage companies set up to help facilitate purchases and use of capabilities from multiple vendors. In the mobile world, vendors including Apple, Google and Microsoft will enable control between devices through different apps. Consumers and IT professionals can expect to see a few key trends emerging this year and expanding in the months to come. Leading the way are integration and a move away from device-centered usage. Consumers can expect electronics firms to be focused on making gadgets smarter and easier to use. ∑

Treat a Job Search Like Selling a Home Finding a job in the current economy is difficult. But savvy seekers can employ different tactics to find work, and that could mean thinking like a real estate agent. That’s right, finding a job may be better achieved if an applicant tackles the challenge as if he or she were selling a house. Many of the same strategies apply. After all, right now it is a buyers’ market. That means that both home buyers and hiring managers can pick from an abundance of low-priced inventory. Here’s how to get started. 1. Know your competition. Before selling a home, individuals scour the neighborhood for comparable properties that offer many of the same features as their own home. This helps them see how their house rates against the competition -- and enables them to price it competitively. When looking for a job, do research as well. Visit sites that indicate the general requirements for a particular career or position and what the average salary may be. Find out which schooling or training courses could put a person ahead of the rest in terms of qualifications. If possible, find out from human resources how many people have been considered for the position. PAGE 30
2. Be “move-in-ready” rather than “as-is condition.” Most buyers want a property they simply can move into, make minor cosmetic changes and call home. Therefore, it’s in the best interest of the seller to spruce-up the home so that it sells more quickly -- and perhaps for a higher price. Apply this concept to searching for a job. Check out interview clothing and see if it fits or needs to be updated. First impressions count. A person interviewing doesn’t want to show up in wrinkled, ill-fitting clothing. Make sure certifications or training are current. That means renewing any licenses that might have expired.
“Get the word out...” 3. List your best assets. A real estate listing is a buyer’s first introduction to a potential home. Real estate agents play up a home’s best features in the listing. With a job search, a resume serves as a listing that companies will review. Make sure that assets are also clear on a resume www.HouseHunterEtc.com
and what sets a person apart from other applicants. Training, experience, awards, and promotions are the types of things that make an applicant stand out. 4. Advertise, advertise. Sellers who simply put their homes up for sale and leave it to chance probably won’t generate too many buyers. An agent who markets the home in different venues, holds open houses and makes sure other brokers are aware of the property is a valuable asset. The same applies for job seekers. Word-of-mouth advertising can be the key. Many jobs are found through a friend, colleague or family member. Get the word out that a job is desired. The more avenues pursued, the better chance to land a position. 5. Be flexible. Homeowners know that a listing price is something that is often negotiable when an offer on the property is made. Oftentimes buyers and sellers go back and forth to agree on a price. When a company decides it’s interested in a job applicant, a negotiation process may occur, too. Be flexible. While the salary may be a bit lower than desired, there may be other perks, such as more vacation time or a casual work environment. JANUARY 2013

by Hugh Bennett There’s been a lot of gloom and doom over the recent elections and politics of energy with our current federal government and how it’s likely to affect those of us impacted by the coal industry—which would be every one of us in Campbell County and most of us in Northeast Wyoming. Well it’s easy to feel nervous and weak when many of those around us are that way. A bad attitude is contagious. That’s why in Deuteronomy 20:8, just before the Israelite army went into battle, its officers encouraged the troops, saying: “...is there a man here who is wavering in resolve and afraid? Let him go home right now so that he doesn’t infect his fellows with his timidity and cowardly spirit.” Hard to argue with that. More importantly, there’s no need for it. Here’s the practical reality of the situation: America LIKES energy and uses it at an astonishing rate. China is the only country in the world using more energy than America—about 27% more than we do total—but they have over four times our population. Coal is still the largest single fuel source (42%) we use, eclipsing natural gas, the next largest fuel used (23%), by a ratio of nearly 2 to 1. Natural gas is cheap enough now, though it requires a pipeline infrastructure to be practical over the long term. But guess who’s been spiking pipelines…? The same environmentalists and politicians that have been down on coal in Washington. They must love creating problems. Is there a trend here? Do they “create” problems so they can set themselves up as “heroes” trying to solve them? Food for thought. The “financial cliff” comes to mind, but that’s another topic. The reality of the situation is that from the late 70’s and Jimmy Carter until the late 90’s, coal use grew. It peaked at 54% and has been wrestled back since then by the green lobby; but heck, some of them hate everything. Probably the only reason it’s been possible to throttle back a bit on coal demand has been that the nation (and world) economy have been stalling out, reducing the demand that economic growth would incur. So unless a president or Congress expects America to tolerate power brownouts and blackouts (something 3rd world dictators are well acquainted with), it isn’t likely to happen. Compromising our ability to produce consistent power throughout the country could well be political suicide. Which, though possible, is unlikely; as many politicians view power-preservation as their MOST important duty. Who says politicians can’t handle thorny “power” issues? So relax. Enjoy the prosperity we’re blessed with sitting in the midst of the cleanest, safest, most economically produced coal beds in the entire world. PAGE 34

7 Inexpensive Ways To Update A Home Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. What many new homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are 7 projects that won’t break the bank.
1
Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference.
Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also just feels more cozy.
6
Hang new wall art. It may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly change a room’s ambience. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today’s home printers can produce professional quality prints in minutes.
7
Try a new coat of paint. After you’ve exhausted other avenues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you desire. Painting is one of the least expensive yet most dramatic methods of changing a home’s interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable you to take snapshots of things in nature and match them up to a paint color, you will have scores of opportunities to explore fresh new colors for your home. When you get inspired to make improvements to the home, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor. ∑
2
Add lighting. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple of table lamps and think that will be adequate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming.
3
Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incorporating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming.
4
Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor.
5
Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. JANUARY 2013

OUCH!
SIMPLE
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

“two-thousand”. Two-thousand thirteen(s). That’s like duct-taping a black cat to the wheel of a car with the windows down while driving pedalto-the-metal across an ice-rink toward a mirror factory and chugging a fortyounce bottle of flat Schlitz malt liquor: unlucky. Thankfully, I’m not superstitious; and most of the residents in the state of Wyoming aren’t either. Because they can’t afford to be, in a place with winters comparable to a cold night on the dark side of the moon. So here’s what I propose, Wyoming: you and me, we’ve got some catching up to do. It’s 2013, now. It’s the future. People are walking around with touch-screen cell phones, chatting up Russian mail-order brides via Skype while driving hybrid cars across vast stretches of underdeveloped land that would’ve taken our ancestors weeks to traverse. All we’re missing are floating cars and a couple bases on the moon—maybe even Mars. We have the technology, the wherewithal, the ingenuity, and the open spaces. Wyoming: let’s prototype some moon bases, eh? It’s common knowledge that our 44th President, Obama, is quite opposed to coal, oil and natural gas—the industries keeping our state and the nation prosperous and energetic. In the near future, we’ll have to do something to keep the residents of our wild, wild west gainfully employed; and I know some great buttes between Gillette and Casper. Or perhaps some of the badlands near Rock Springs? Or that region between Wright and South Dakota where the only things alive are antelope, jack-rabbits, and the occasional jackalope? It’s basically the moon anyway, right? I always find myself asking where the future is. You know what? It’s right here! We’re in it! And, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we have slacked off since the sixties. In an era when doctors can grow you a new heart in a laboratory, having mastered the subtle architecture of human biology, we certainly have the means to explore—to seek out new worlds and civilizations; to boldly go where no cowboy has gone before! ∑ JANUARY 2013

Cabin Fever
Cabin fever is the feeling you get when you are relegated to spending long periods of time indoors. Because winter weather can be harsh, cabin fever most often occurs in the winter, when the weather outside discourages you from spending time outdoors or opening your windows to let in fresh air. Though there’s nothing you can do about the weather, you can take steps to quell cabin fever and avoid the wintertime blues. Around the House: There are plenty of ways to make a cabin less conducive to cabin fever. * Let the sunshine in. Cold air outside makes it foolish and potentially unhealthy to open the windows. But homeowners can still let the sunshine outside those windows in. Pull the curtains back and open the blinds to let as much light as possible into a home throughout the winter months. * Work by the window. More and more people now telecommute to work, which can make them more susceptible to cabin fever during the winter months. Choose an airy room with lots of windows to house your home office. You’ll want your desk to face the windows during the workday so you can benefit from the midday sun. * Improve your home’s aroma. While the validity of aromatherapy remains open for debate, improving a home’s aroma during the winter months can remove the musty smell that forms when a home has been poorly ventilated for weeks or even months. Supporters of aromatherapy suggest that some essential oils, including lavender and peppermint, improve one’s mood. Embrace Activity: Many people feel winter is a time to hibernate, which can make them more susceptible to cabin fever. But even when the weather outside isn’t conducive to a backyard pool party, you can still stay active to fend off cabin fever. * Exercise regularly. Regular exercise has both physical and mental benefits, the latter of which can be especially valuable to those hoping to quell cabin fever. Exercise releases certain neurotransmitters in the brain that alleviate pain and improve mood. Embracing outdoor activities like skiing is one way to quell cabin fever this winter. * Get outdoors. You don’t have to spend hours in a gym each day to stay active during the winter months. It’s still possible to spend ample time outdoors when the weather is cold. Walk or run when the conditions allow or embrace an activity such as skiing or snowboarding to get off the couch and spend some quality time outside. * Shovel the driveway. If your body allows, shovel your own driveway when it snows. When done correctly, shoveling is great exercise, and you may even cherish the time you get to spend outdoors. If cabin fever is proving especially problematic, you might be suffering from a condition known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. Also known as seasonal depression, SAD can mimic depression, and if you suspect you might be suffering from SAD you should consult a physician. ∑

FACT on Drunk Driving:
Many people mistakenly assume that New Year’s Eve is the holiday responsible for the most drunk-driving accidents. Although champagne and other alcoholic drinks are often free-flowing on December 31, New Year’s Eve holds a distant second place to Thanksgiving for the most drunk drivingrelated fatalities. This is perhaps because Thanksgiving is a family holiday, and many people often feel pressure to drink more when family are around to have a good time. With that in mind, please drink responsibly and don’t give drunk driving fatalities on New Years a boost up! Call a cab, call a friend, stay where you are if you’re past the point of saying no to another drink or driving home sober. Plan to have a designated driver for the group. Remember, sometimes when you play today, tomorrow you pay. And a fatality or DUI can be life changing for everyone involved.

Survive the Next Recession with Good Planning The economy is still reeling from the recession, and the question of when the global economy’s struggles will end remains a mystery. One thing we do know is that when the economy does finally rebound, it won’t remain stable forever, and it’s imperative that men and women prepare for the next recession, even if that preparation begins before the current recession ends. The up-and-down nature of the economy has made it difficult to plan for tomorrow, let alone years down the road. However, there are steps people can take to protect themselves from the next recession. * Expect a recession every few years. One of the best things men and women can do when preparing for a recession is to understand that recession is normal and will likely occur every few years. When the current recession ends, recognize that another one might be right around the corner. Understanding the nature of a recession helps men and women control their finances and be better suited to handle it when it makes its inevitable return. * Reduce debt. Debt is an albatross regardless of what state the economy is in, but carrying significant debt during a
JANUARY 2013
recession is like playing with fire. During the current recession, many workers lost their jobs, and even those who didn’t might not be so lucky when the next recession arrives. Paying down debts now improves financial flexibility down the road, and that flexibility could make the difference if the next recession arrives and you find yourself out of work. If you carry substantial debt on a credit card, contact the company and discuss reducing your rates or even transferring the debt to a different card with lower rates. * Save, save, save. Individuals should have an emergency fund set aside for surviving a recession should they find themselves suddenly out of work. One of the more astonishing things about the current recession was how quickly many people’s cash supplies dried up. An emergency fund should be enough to pay your bills for at least six months and as much as a year, if not more. Conventional wisdom used to suggest men and women have enough saved to get by for anywhere from three to six months. However, the job market remains so difficult that people can toss that conventional wisdom aside and save www.HouseHunterEtc.com
more. This might sound simple, but saving has apparently fallen by the wayside. A 2011 poll from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling found that 64 percent of Americans would need to utilize a source other than their savings account to pay for a $1,000 unplanned expense. This illustrates that many simply aren’t saving enough. Start now, even if contributions are small, and don’t stop saving. * Diversify. Diversification is a good investment strategy, but it’s also effective as a professional strategy. With regard to your portfolio, balance your assets and make sure all of your eggs are not in the same basket. With regard to income, examine new ways to make money. Diversify your income by doing some freelance work on weekends or weeknights. Even if the amount you earn is relatively small, it can be added to your savings and, should you find yourself out of work, this extra income softens the blow. * Cut back on monthly expenses. Everyone has monthly expenses they insist they cannot live without. Premium cable channels or monthly trips to the salon might seem like must-haves, but they’re really not. If your savings are especially low or your debt is especially high, cut back on unnecessary expenses until your savings has grown significantly or your debt has been eliminated. ∑ PAGE 39
