MARCH 2013
g’sesk HuD
March is here, but as I write this on President’s day in February, it feels like winter wants to linger this year. It’s been overcast and pretty nasty all weekend, despite a mild forecast. Wouldn’t it be great to have a job like the weather forecaster? You could be wrong most of the time and still get paid! During the last five days we’ve had snow and sloppy roads every day, but the weather forecast for the weekend was pretty rosy with a “50% chance of snow showers” for Friday evening only. Imagine what life would be like if your plumber missed the mark as often as the weather guessers do. Better yet, don’t imagine that. With that in mind, I’d like to ask a question: is it just me, or has our government decided to shift priorities? Over the last few decades it seems the powers that be have made it to the point where they aren’t even ashamed of the pork and waste endemic to our system. If there were a list of priorities for the United States Congress, it seems to me it it would read something like this: 1: Stay in office 2: Expand your power, invent excuses to do so. 3: Create as many problems as necessary to make the exercise of power seem reasonable. (See #2.) 4: Come to the “rescue” by pretending to work on the “crisis”. (This makes a great excuse to pass more laws that will “save” everyone from the “emergency” Congress manufactured in the first place.)
It’s like a firebug having a fire insurance operation. Business is great right up until the house burns down. And guess who lit the fire? I think the following Will Rogers quote helps put everything into perspective: “Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.” The United States has been a wonderful experiment in Democracy. The statesmen that authored our Constitution did a fine job giving us the tools to control our government. Sadly, our willingness to vote for bread and circuses instead of being selfreliant and expecting government to be a small, very small, part of our society has lead to a tipping point that will be a challenge to pull back from. Government can’t solve our problems at this point. Government as we have it today IS the problem. Hugh Bennett, Editor MARCH 2013

Who is Responsible for Home Repairs During the Sale? Many questions arise during the home-buying process. Buyers looking at homes that require a good deal of TLC may wonder who is responsible for the home's repairs, particularly if such repairs are needed to secure a certificate of occupancy. Depending on the situation, there is no clear-cut answer. There is no perfect home, and things that are acceptable to the current owner may not be acceptable to the buyer who is looking to become the next owner. The home-buying process is typically a careful cooperation between buyer and seller to find a middle ground. The buyer may have to make some concessions, as will the seller. Ultimately, it is this cooperation that often determines if the sale goes through or is terminated. Before any negotiations can begin regarding repairs, it is advisable for a buyer to have an independent inspector come out and look over the home and property. Most real estate agents will suggest this be done as a first priority, even before a contract is entered on the home. An inspection will unveil any potential problems in a home and indicate things that the buyer may not be aware of, including items that do not meet with code or could be unsafe. An inspector also may point out problems that could cause a mortgage lender to give pause. This may mean the lender will deem problems unsafe and refuse to fund the mortgage until repairs are made. A copy of this inspection report should be sent to the home seller to review with their attorney and real estate agent. The buyer working with their own real estate attorney and agent can petition for certain repairs to be made. Many sellers will make such repairs to ensure the purchase goes through, or they will accept a lower purchase price to compensate for the needed repairs, which the buyer will Page 10
then make. Buyers might want to hire a good real estate attorney to write needed repairs, which the buyer will then make. Buyers might want to hire a good real estate attorney to write clauses into the contract to protect their interests. This allows the buyer to forfeit the sale and walk away from the contract should an issue arise. The rules often change when buying a home that is a short sale or in foreclosure.
A home that is in distress is typically in this situation because the current owners cannot afford to pay their mortgage, and thusly, are not able to afford repairs. Buyers may try to negotiate repairs with the seller, but they shouldn't assume that sellers (or lenders in the event of a bank-owned home) are responsible for the repairs. Generally speaking, most short sales and foreclosures are sold "as is" and may even specify that repairs and requirements for the certificate of occupancy are the buyer's responsibility. A buyer also can ask to have the home price reduced to cover the repairs. But foreclosures are often already deeply discounted. Buyers should know that, for a home that is not in foreclosure, there are some repairs that should ultimately be the responsibility of the seller. If these repairs are not made, a buyer should think strongly about walking away from the deal. Such repairs include: www.HouseHunterEtc.com
* lender-required repairs that could impact home safety * leaky pipes * water penetration issues, including a bad roof * unsafe decking or handrails * wet basements or crawl spaces * insecure foundations or obvious structural damage * poorly functioning sewer lines or septic system It is always advisable for buyers to speak with a reliable real estate attorney and a trusted real estate agent to guide them through the process of buying a home. These people can help buyers navigate the important decisions that can affect the home they'll be living in for the next several years. ∑

SAVING ON HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
With the economy still struggling, money is tight for many homeowners. That reality can present a problem to those who want to improve their homes without spending too much money. The cost of a home improvement project depends on a host of factors, including the scale of the project and the availability of materials. Upscale projects like a full roof replacement will set homeowners back a substantial amount of money. However, a smaller project like a garage door replacement could be completed for very little. If your home is a fixer-upper, then one project may not be more urgent than another, something that may allow you to choose less expensive projects now while saving money for more expensive projects down the road. Consider the following ways to trim costs off your next home improvement project:
2
Hire the right contractor. The best contractor for the job won't necessarily be the one who comes in with the lowest estimate. The right contractor will know how long a project will take and what the materials will cost. The wrong contractor, who might lack the experience of his competitors, might make empty promises that ultimately cost you more money via overrun costs.
1
Avoid the Do It Yourself (DIY) movement if you don't have adequate experience. Many homeowners fall into the DIY trap, feeling they can pull off a project without hiring a professional contractor. While this is an option for those homeowners with home improvement experience, it's an approach that's best avoided by those without such experience. Homeowners who decide to go it alone on a home improvement project should know that mistakes are costly. One mistake could have you paying for the same materials twice: once when you begin the project, and then again when you need to hire a contractor after your efforts didn't work out. A failed DIY project also costs you time, something homeowners hoping to sell their homes post-project cannot afford to waste.
research your project, you should be able to buy the materials yourself, even if you plan on hiring a contractor to do the work. Some contractors mark up the materials as a means of padding the bill. If you research the project and learn about the materials you want to use, you can save a substantial amount of money buying those materials yourself and then hiring a contractor.
4
Don't overlook recycled materials. Buying recycled materials is another way to reduce home improvement costs. Bathroom fixtures, doors, flooring, and lighting are just a few of the materials that are commonly recycled and resold at a fraction of the cost of new materials. Shop around for stores in your area or peruse the Internet for recycled materials. Homeowners undertaking a replacement project rather than a remodel might even be eligible for tax breaks if they donate their old materials.
5
Find a contractor who comes highly recommended and is willing to provide references and show you their past projects like the one you're hiring them to undertake. If you hire the wrong contractor, the project may never be completed and you may find yourself in court, where the money you had budgeted for home improvements is being spent on lawyers instead.
3
Consider supplying your own materials. If you diligently
Choose projects that provide more bang for your buck. Another way to save is to choose projects that provide a strong return on your investment. If money is a motivating factor behind your project, choose a project that will get you the most money back at resale. While the economy has not necessarily been kind to the home improvement industry, there are still plenty of homeowners looking to improve their homes. Savvy homeowners can do just that and save some money along the way by putting a few strategies to work for them. ∑

Vernal equinox... The word “equinox” is actually derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Many people refer to the equinox as the time when both day and night are of equal length. However, this is actually a misconception, as equality of daylight and darkness depends on your geographic location. When the northern hemisphere of the Earth is experiencing the spring, or vernal equinox, the southern hemisphere is experiencing the autumnal equinox. The vernal equinox is widely known as the first day of spring. It is a happy time for so many people because it marks the point in the calendar when the weather will soon begin to warm and flowers and animals will repopulate. It is also the point in time from which the days will continue to get longer and there will be more sunlight. In 2013, the vernal equinox takes place on March 20th at 7:02 a.m. EST. Although the hours of the day and night aren’t completely equal, there are many other remarkable things associated with the equinox. • During an equinox, the sun rises due east and sets due west. These are the only times this occurs. These are the only days of the year when the sun will cross the sky in a perfectly straight line. • At the North Pole, the vernal equinox marks the start of six months of uninterrupted daylight. At the South Pole, it starts six months of darkness.
• In the Gregorian calendar, the use of leap years means the equinoxes occur on the same days nearly every year. The spring equinox typically arrives on March 20th or 21st. • On every vernal equinox there are scores of people who attempt to stand an egg on end because they believe the position of the Earth’s axis will help balance the egg. This is an urban legend and there is no scientific reason to suppose that an alignment of the Earth’s axis will affect items on Earth, including eggs. It is possible to stand an egg on end with patience and the right shaped egg. It can be done any time of the year, not just on an equinox.
The vernal equinox is a time for people living in the northern hemisphere to prepare for a new season of sunlight, warmth, rebirth, and entertaining. It won’t be long before there are buds on the trees and tulips and daffodils are popping up. ∑

area
Twice a year the Earth’s axis is positioned so that it is pointed neither toward the sun nor away from it. During these times, the sun is in the same plane of the Earth’s equator. This means the sun can be viewed directly overhead at the equator at these times of the year. The name given to this is “equinox.”

Easter calls to mind colored eggs and baskets full of candy and toys. Many of the things used for Easter celebrations are not necessarily eco-friendly. But there are ways to embrace greener options to ensure Easter is a happy time for celebrants and the environment. Easter Baskets Easter baskets overflowing with fake grass and plenty of treats are an eagerly anticipated component of Easter celebrations. However, many of the items found in a typical Easter basket -- or even the basket itself -- may be made of items that are damaging to the environment. Plastic Easter eggs are made from plastics that may not be biodegradable. Furthermore, they may be made using chemicals that are damaging to the environment. Plastic grass carries the same dangers. Once discarded,
PAGE 26
plastic grass also may pose risks to wildlife that can become tangled in the substance or inadvertently eat it and choke or experience intestinal blockage. Instead of pre-packaged Easter baskets, individuals can construct their own. Look for baskets made from reusable materials, such as wicker or other wood-based materials, steering away from plastic. Instead of plastic grass, shred paper that is headed for the recycling bin. Look for treats without excessive packaging. You can gather healthy treats and toys individually and put together in the basket. This way you can cater more to what your child enjoys and rely less on the cheap stuff that will end up in the garbage. Easter Eggs Coloring Easter eggs is a tradition. So are the coloring kits that may be made from chemical food dyes. Instead, look to natural foods to add a festive hue to the eggs. Cranberry juice or beet juice can turn eggs pink. Red cabbage leaves or mashed blueberries can dye eggs blue. And turmeric can give eggs a yellow tint. These all-natural dyes are safe for little fingers. All-Natural Decorations Rather than silk flowers and plastic eggs, use the real thing in your decorating. Bring

a little of the outside indoors with fresh flowers in a vase. Use twigs and ribbon to create inexpensive and green centerpieces for the holiday table. Wrap cloth napkins in a thick blade of grass for a little festivity. Construct wreaths from pruned garden clippings and florist wire to dress up doorways. Table Settings Avoid disposable products whenever possible to prevent extra items from ending up in the trash. It is easy to wash ceramic or even fine china with ease in a dishwasher. Think about purchasing decorative springthemed glasses that can be reused year after year. Resist the urge to use disposable bakeware and serving platters as well. While they may take a little longer to wash, you'll be doing your part to help the planet. Easter Dinner Many families dine on ham and potatoes or a roast for Easter dinner. Shop locally at your nearest butcher for the meat instead of purchasing something mass-produced in a can. A local farm stand may yield plenty of fresh vegetables to accompany the main course. Instead of store-bought desserts, think about fresh berries in a homemade pie for the perfect ending to a festive day. ∑

WHAT’S
THE
The savvy shopper knows there is no reason to pay full price if you don’t have to. Timing is everything when bargain hunting, and with a little patience, most people can find deep discounts on items that might have broken the bank just a few weeks prior. Shopping with coupons often requires clipping the coupon and then trying to match it up with a discounted price being offered by the store to maximize your savings. All of this has to be done prior to the coupon’s expiration date. Many veteran bargain hunters prefer to shop seasonally, instead. This means waiting until stores put items on clearance or run large sales. Knowing the best times to buy certain products can save consumers hundreds or even thousands of dollars over the course of a year. The following is a list of items and the seasons during which those types of items are most likely to be sold at a discount. Appliances The new models for most appliances arrive in the autumn. Therefore, most retailers are looking to clear out older inventory over the winter. Between October and January, expect to find deep discounts on major appliances. If shoppers can wait to replace an older unit, they will be rewarded with very good prices. Carpet and Flooring Prior to the holiday season, many homeowners are busy making home improvements so their home is welcoming and pristine for visiting guests. After the holidays end, however, such DIY projects often get placed on the back burner. To boost activity, home improvement stores usually cut prices on carpet and flooring during the month of January.

shows, others recommend visiting dealerships between January and March to get last year’s models as boat retailers are making room for new inventory.
Garden Tools Although many homeowners still may be cleaning up from winter storms and shoveling snow, those who want to get ready for spring can go shopping for garden tools in March. Electronics Economists urge American and Canadian consumers to purchase major electronics in the spring, notably April. This is when the Japanese fiscal year ends, and many Japanese companies coincide the release of new models at this time of year. Therefore, older models might be slashed in price. Those interested in a computer may want to wait until August, when stores cut prices to coincide with back-toschool season. Shoppers interested in televisions should do their shopping in January, when products are discounted prior to the Super Bowl. Automobiles Consumers interested in purchasing previously owned cars can shop in April. For those who are waiting to purchase a new vehicle, October is the best time to buy because this is when dealerships receive new inventory and are looking to clear out last year’s models.
Seasonal Products Lawnmowers, air conditioners, patio furniture and pool equipment typically go on sale around September and October. Stores are switching over to their fall merchandise and are looking to clear out any remnants of summertime, even if the weather is still quite warm. Some stores do this as early as August, when they are already getting ready to make room for Halloween and Christmas displays. Swimsuits Swimsuits go on sale in August to make room for fall accessories. Although some people will argue there is never a good time to go bathing suit shopping, if a good price is a requirement, then August is the time. Weddings It is well-known that the summer months are peak times for weddings -and expensive prices. Budget-conscious couples can consider a November wedding, where costs may be much less and vendors not in much demand. Try to have the wedding prior to the holiday season, when catering halls start booking rooms for Christmas parties. Knowing when to buy items during the year can add up to considerable savings. ∑
Furniture Although furniture is usually updated in stores biannually, many furniture retailers also run sales close to major holidays. Independence Day and the rest of July is a popular time for sales. Boats Although there are those who argue that the best deals are had at area boat

A Helping Hand “HELP!” She screeched. Everything about her was pretty, except the scream. City-pretty, not the kind most Wyoming locals were used to. No one in the 24 hour truck stop restaurant responded immediately; the waitresses were in the kitchen, and apparently the desk attendant had taken a restroom break. “Somebody, PLEASE! He’s gonna kill me!” The only occupant in the diner that evening was Jeremy, a well-proportioned roughneck on his seven days off. He wiped his mouth and slid out the booth, two hundred pounds of Jeans, flannel, and oil patch attitude. “Can I help you, ma’am?” “Thank God!” She ran to him tearyeyed. “I’m actually Jeremy. What’s the matter, sweetheart?” She practically tackled him; clutching him like a frightened child: “He’ll kill me, he’ll kill me, he’ll kill—” “Slow down, there, kitten. Who’ll kill you?” “He’s coming, don’t you understand? They know!” “Know what? Settle down, now. Tell me all about it. What’s your name?” “Trina…” “It’s nice to meet you, Trina.” “You too…Jeremy—w-we don’t have much time—!” One of the waitresses yelled up from the back: “Can I help you folks?” “Give us a ‘sec, Noreen,” he turned back to Trina: “It’s all okay, we’ve got time. What’s the problem, now?” She pushed him away, sniffed, finally said: “I’m from Chicago. I’m a witness against the mob. The feds had me in a protection program in South Dakota, but one of Sal Malone’s goons saw me gassing up in Rapid City, so I got in my car and bolted; but he’s still coming! Enhance Your Personal Beauty! Many women are on an eternal quest to enhance their beauty, spending thousands of dollars each year on cosmetics or hair care products to emulate the pictures they see in leading beauty magazines. Women struggling to live up to unrealistic standards can look beyond many makeup and cosmetic fixes to bring out their beauty. There are many different strategies that have stood the test of time. Confidence: A woman who exudes confidence and security about how she looks may come off as more attractive. By comparison, women who hide behind layers of clothing or makeup may seem like they're trying to disguise their true selves. Walking with your head held high into a room can certainly have all eyes pointing in your direction for the right reasons. Good Posture: Standing up straight can improve your health and your appearance. Stooping posture has long been associated with old age, and symptoms of frailty and lack of energy. Simply standing tall can elongate the body, make it appear slender and help portray a younger appearance. Healthy Hair: Your hair sends a message to others about how much you care about your appearance, as it is one of the most visible aspects of your appearance. Many people suffer with hair issues that can be remedied with different techniques. Dry unmanageable hair may be the result of inadequate scalp stimulation. In such instance, the oils of the scalp need to be spread to the hair shaft to improve hair's appearance and health. Too often women do not spend enough time brushing or massaging the scalp to induce oil distribution. While 100 strokes with a brush is not necessary, a thorough brushing each day can help. PAGE 30
Skin Care: Women often turn to cosmetic products as fast fixes to beauty woes. While many manufacturers present their products as the miracle fix women were looking for, most beauty items do not offer the freshfrom-the-plasticsurgeon's-office effect. In reality, expensive products may not work any better than inexpensive ones. For decades people have relied on petroleum jelly as a versatile skincare product. It has been used to accelerate healing in the skin, as a moisturizer, as a protectant from weather elements and even as a lip balm. You should try petroleum jelly to prevent wrinkles or add moisture to troubled skin as a first recourse over more expensive specialty products. Diet: While you won't turn into a giant cupcake if you have a penchant for sweets, the notion of "you are what you eat" does have its merits. An individual's appearance is not only influenced by genetics but also by the foods and beverages an individual consumes. Eating the right foods can have a positive effect on your health as well as your appearance. The vitamins and minerals contained in certain foods can improve the appearance of the skin, hair and nails. And it is well documented that drinking ample amounts of water can also play a big role in keeping your body hydrated and looking its best. www.HouseHunterEtc.com
Lifestyle: Smoking not only affects your internal organs and increases your cancer risk, but it's also affects your appearance. Smoking can discolor the skin and the hands. Smokers who routinely purse their lips to take a drag on a cigarette may notice a faster accumulation of fine lines around the mouth. The blood vessels in the eyes can be compromised by a lack of oxygen due to smoking, and the chemicals in the smoke can lead to inflammation and irritation of the eyes. Smoking also seems to age the skin more quickly, further enhancing the appearance of wrinkles. Women hoping to look their best can employ some of these beauty tips, which don't require a trip to the cosmetic counter. ∑ MARCH 2013

Establishing A
Focus on finances this year by establishing a budget. The following are a few tips for you that should help with planning a budget and reach your financial goals. Start With Your Income. How much money is being brought into the household will go a long way toward determining your budget. The first month of the year, when people will receive their earnings statements from the previous year, should provide a clear-cut picture of just how much income the household is generating. Once you have that information, you can begin to establish a budget. Make a List of Your Bills. Knowing what’s coming in is important when establishing a budget, but so is having a firm grasp of what’s going out. Make a list of all of your monthly expenses, from the big ones like a mortgage payment to the smaller ones like how much you spend on a cup of coffee each day. When making a list of these expenses, make note of the day bills are due each month. This can help you determine which weeks of each month you’ll be able to save more money and which weeks you will need to tighten your belt and pay existing bills. Such knowledge will help you establish a budget. List Anticipated Expenses. Some expenses are there every month. Others are those you expect, such as home improvement projects you plan to finance in the coming year. Make a list of these anticipated expenses. This may involve taking some inventory of things around the house, such as any appliances that may be on their last legs, bigger issues like a roof that may need to be replaced or a bathroom you finally plan to remodel. Once you have compiled this list, research how much each project figures to cost you. This should give you an idea of how realistic each project is for you, and whether or not you will be able to tackle multiple projects this year.
PAGE 32
Don’t Forget About Debts. Many people plan a budget more to get out of debt than to save for a rainy day. When establishing a budget, calculate how much debt you’re currently carrying. Though you can do so if you prefer, it’s best to exclude existing installment loans like a mortgage or a car note from your list of debts. Though those can be considered money you owe, they are more in line with the monthly expenses you need to live than credit card debts you simply need to get rid of. If your debt is considerable or even small, see if there is anything you can remove from your list of monthly expenses (i.e., cable television or streaming video subscription) so you can devote that money to eliminating your debt. In addition, those with considerable debt should prioritize ending that debt over projects you want to tackle that aren’t exactly necessities. For example, if your kitchen is outdated but still safe and functional, postpone the kitchen remodel until you have eliminated your debt. Deciding To Cut Costs. Chances are you’re establishing a budget because you have a specific financial goal in mind or because you examined last year’s financial statements and realized you fell short of your savings goals. So you likely know you need to cut some costs, and part of establishing a budget is deciding which costs you can cut. Some of the more common ways people cut costs includes deciding to dine out less, canceling a cable television subscription or removing premium channels from their package, driving less to save money on fuel and forgoing storebought coffee for java they make at www.HouseHunterEtc.com
home. Each of these budget cuts can lead to substantial savings over time, and none of them are lifealtering to the point of lowering a person’s quality of life. Include Savings In Your Budget. Living on a budget is not always easy, especially for those people who are not used to doing so. When establishing your budget, include weekly, bi-weekly and monthly savings goals into the budget. If you stick to this plan, you will have something to show for your financial discipline at the end of each month, and light at the end of the tunnel can be a motivating factor as you adapt to living on a budget. It’s a great time to turn over a new financial leaf, and establishing a budget is a great way to get started on a path to a brighter financial future. ∑

the Senior
Send-Off! Another generation of students will soon launch themselves into the real world. Many parents remember this time with fondness and alarm. Fondness for those nostalgic memories of carefree youth; alarm because their teenagers are now in the same place, and most parents know exactly how they acted at that age. CCHS has a solution: the Senior SendOff. After prom, every senior that made the dance will want to hang out with their classmates. What better way to facilitate such a thing than the Senior Send-Off,? With endless games and prizes—like black jack, poker, and a new car—there’s ample motivation for teens to keep out of trouble and enjoy themselves all night in a clean, safe, controlled environment among friends and peers. The more seniors we can get to the Senior Send-Off, the fewer unsafe parties and ridiculous illegal shenanigans there will be, with your help of course, this could be the most memorable for years!

W
yoming has an “old west” reputation. Find yourself in Los Angeles or Minneapolis or New York or Chicago, you can regale the locals with tales of the difficulties that came from the state’s first paved road in the nineties. You can tell those city-slickers that when you encountered honest-togoodness electricity, you were an adult and it was like magic. Most folks know so little of Wyoming, they’d believe you in a minute. In fact most do, and oftentimes it’s necessary to set the record straight before you end the conversation so nobody tells their friends how jackalopes brought the internet to Sheridan, WY. What many people in the U.S. don’t realize is that Wyoming is far from behind the times; the state just has times of its own! But, in the event you’ve got some relative or friend that tends to relegate this beautiful land to the realm of rumor and imagination, you might bring them back to reality with a few film factoids: Since the innovation of motion picture, over eighty archived and internationally recognized movies have been shot on-location in the state of Wyoming. Most of the earlier ones are black-and-white silent films. Westerns; like The Man From Bitter Roots (1916), or The Hell Cat (1918). Wyoming’s sweeping prairies and aesthetic buttes make ideal shooting locales for the western vibe. One might argue that Wyoming’s influence in the “look” of the modern PAGE 34
western picture is impossible to underestimate. Django Unchained (2013), Quentin Tarantino’s latest effort, used Wyoming as one of its principal photography landscapes; www.HouseHunterEtc.com
and the closest any of that film’s settings get to Wyoming is north Texas. Then again, most of those old westerns in the earlier half of the twentieth century weren’t based in Wyoming; but they were all shot there. Between 1904 and 1975, there were more than fifty westerns/period pieces filmed on-location in Wyoming. 1977 saw a change in genre, though, when Close Encounters of the Third Kind sprinkled some Devil’s Towercentric sci-fi into the mix. Several years later, a little known series called Star Trek would have photography from it’s first theatrical release, imaginatively named Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), commissioned in Wyoming. Twenty years later, Paul Verhoeven would choose the badlands outside Casper, WY as the bug planet in Starship Troopers (1997). Scenes from the 2002 remake, Rollerball, would also be shot in Wyoming. Not to be outdone, Sylvester Stallone decided the outskirts of Jackson Hole, WY looked just like Siberia and shot parts of Rocky IV (1985) there. Kevin Costner also liked the lay of the land in the east, and filmed several key scenes from Dances With Wolves (1990) around the Belle Fourche river area. A few highlights, but by no means a comprehensive list of Wyoming’s film credentials. Still: the next time some “progressive” cityslicker tries to poke fun at Wyoming, throw some tight movie references at that hipster punk! You’ll blow his metropolitan mind. ∑ MARCH 2013

OUCH!
SIMPLE
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! PAGE 36

Saint Patrick’s Day Facts:
• Despite St. Patrick being alive centuries earlier, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations didn’t begin until 1737. • More people of Irish heritage live in the United States than currently live in all of Ireland. Irish-Americans living stateside predominantly reside in the N. Atlantic states. • St. Patrick angered the Celtic Druids many times by converting pagans to Christianity. The Druids put him in jail on numerous occasions. • Green is not the official color affiliated with St. Patrick. It is really blue. However, green became a familiar hue during the nineteenth century more for being associated with the magic of Irish legends than St. Patrick himself. • The three-leaf shamrock has more historical significance with regards to Saint Patrick’s day than a four-leaf clover. The three leaves were believed to be used by St. Patrick to explain the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, where God exists as three persons. • For 67 years, St. Patrick’s Day was a “dry” holiday in Ireland. James O’Mara, a member of Irish parliament, introduced a bill in 1903 that made St. Patrick’s Day a religious holiday in the country. • Contrary to popular belief, Ireland does not top the list with respect to showing Irish pride. New York City boasts the largest parade honoring the holiday and Irish heritage. MARCH 2013
Cook a whole brisket with both sections together with all its fat. (You can trim off the fat after the meat is cooked.) Whole brisket and second-cut corned beef brisket are hard to find, but your supermarket should have first-cut corned beef vacuum-packed in plastic. Choose the fattiest piece in the case and treat it gently. You can cook the cabbage and potatoes in the same water as the corned beef. Because the other vegetables need to be cooked in water that simmers more than the meat, scoop out water from the corned beef pot and cook the vegetables in a separate pot or pots. 1 1 1 2 6
4- to 5-pound corned beef brisket teaspoon pickling spices head cabbage pounds boiling potatoes to 8 small carrots (optional) Parsnips (optional) Turnips (optional)
Place the corned beef in a pot that holds at least 5 quarts of water. Cover completely with cold water. Place over high heat and bring to a simmer. As soon as bubbles start to break on the surface of the water, adjust the heat so the water simmers very, very gently. With a slotted spoon, skim off the residue that accumulates on the surface. When the residue stops coming to the surface, add the pickling spices. Continue to cook, with bubbles just gently breaking on the surface, for 3 to 4 hours, until fork tender. The meat can be safely held in its water for about 2 hours; reheat gently. Cook the vegetables until fork tender in separate pots of boiling fresh water or, especially for the cabbage, use some of the water in which the corned beef was cooked. Slice the corned beef and serve with mustard and/or horseradish. Serves 6 to 8

March is Womenʼs History Month
The First Woman Governor
Nellie Tayloe Ross
Nellie Tayloe Ross was the 14th governor of Wyoming, serving from January 5, 1925 to January 3, 1927. She was elected to complete the term of her husband, William Bradford Ross, who died while in office. Nellie Davis Tayloe was born in 1876 in St. Joseph, Missouri. Her family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she completed a two-year program to become a kindergarten teacher and taught briefly. While visiting relatives in Tennessee, she met William Bradford Ross, a young lawyer. They were married in 1902 and lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Rosses had four sons. While Nellie devoted herself to her home and family, William practiced law, occasionally ran for political office and eventually was elected governor in 1922. In October 1924 he died of complications from an appendectomy.
PAGE 38
Because his death occurred so close to a general election in November, Wyoming law required that his successor be elected then. Democratic Party leaders nominated Nellie. She ran against Republican Eugene J. Sullivan of Casper and won the election. One advantage Nellie was seen to have was the desire of the citizens of Wyoming to be the first to elect a woman governor, after having been the first state to grant women the right to vote in 1869. Nellie was nominated by the Democrats for reelection in 1926 but was defeated in a close race by the Republican candidate, Frank C. Emerson. Following her governorship, Nellie served as a Wyoming
committeewoman to the Democratic National Committee and then as vice chairman of the DNC, in charge of activities for women. In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed her director of the U.S. Mint. She held this position until 1953. Nellie died in 1977 in Washington, D.C. at the age of 101. ∑
