When renovating a home, many homeowners look to increase the home’s curb appeal. “Curb appeal” is a term used to describe how the home’s exterior appears to buyers the moment they pull up to the curb. A home that impresses prospective buyers before they even go inside is said to have a strong curb appeal, and that curb appeal can add significant value to a home. Homeowners looking to improve the curb appeal of their home can do so in a variety of ways. One often overlooked yet effective way to make a home’s exterior more appealing is to revamp the driveway. Driveways may not be high on a homeowner’s renovation totem pole, but a cracked or unsightly driveway can give prospective buyers the impression that a home has not been properly taken care of. When addressing a driveway, homeowners have a host of paving materials at their disposal.

intensive material to install. But brick allows homeowners to create distinctive patterns that can add quite a bit to a home’s curb appeal. Once installed, brick driveways don’t require much maintenance, though cracked bricks will need to be replaced. Cobblestone Cobblestone can be very pleasing to the eye, but that appeal won’t come cheap. Among the more expensive paving materials, cobblestone can also be a handful to maintain, as weeds can penetrate the cobblestones rather easily. Loose or missing stones can be unsightly and will need to be replaced. Many homeowners who love the look of cobblestone choose to use it along walkways or on their patios, as these areas won’t require as much materials, saving both money and the time it takes to maintain the cobblestones.

Concrete Perhaps the most ideal paving material for the homeowner who wants to express his or her individuality. That’s because concrete driveways can be laid in a variety of colors and designs, adding a touch of personality in a place many homeowners likely thought such expression was impossible. Though affordable, concrete can fall victim to the elements, as extremely cold temperatures can cause the concrete to shift and ultimately crack. Concrete pavers can remedy this problem, though that will add to the overall cost of the project. Gravel A gravel driveway can give a home a historical look that few of today’s homes can boast. Gravel is an affordable material that requires little maintenance, though weeds can grow through gravel and must be removed to maintain the driveway’s appeal. Washout is a concern for some who want a gravel driveway, but edging the driveway with a material like timber or bluestone can prevent the gravel from washing away should heavy rains fall. ∑

Asphalt Asphalt is an affordable paving material, which likely plays a role in its popularity among homeowners. Asphalt is also easy to install and requires little maintenance, two additional benefits to homeowners who don’t have much time to install or look after their driveway. Asphalt is made from a combination of concrete, gravel and tar, and though it’s easy and affordable to install, asphalt, as any kid can tell you, can get awfully hot under the summer sun. Asphalt can also crack rather easily, so homeowners must weigh its immediate affordability against the likelihood that perhaps it will need to be replaced sooner than other materials. Brick Brick is among the more expensive paving materials, as brick is a laborPAGE 14

“We did a remodel about four years ago; you wouldn’t believe the building’s been around since 1975. Currently we have five separate, private, dining rooms,” said Ken Barkey, who took over Prime Rib Restaurant in 1991. Originally operated by Ed and Phyllis Vanscoy, Ken was brought aboard in May of ‘83, and soon after became owner. “I’m from New York – Long Island. This job brought me out; I was in Indiana at the time. I received a call from Ed and Phyllis Vanscoy. Having worked with him out in Colorado a few years earlier, that’s how he knew me. He hired me to run the Prime Rib which led to my ownership in 1991.” Since then, the Prime Rib has developed and matured with elegance and style. “We started out with perhaps twenty wine selections,” Ken continues, “and currently we have eight hundred. That’s what’s evolved the most, besides the physical building.

Good Food, Great Service Menu-wise, now we’ve got all sorts of gluten free items; like gluten free pizza. Prime Rib keeps up with nutrition trends. One of our newer items is the tableside guacamole. The avocado is peeled and all the ingredients poised for assembly. It’s all made from scratch and fresh, right before your eyes. Then there’s our Chorizo stuffed date; baconwrapped with sausage on the inside. It’s a real favorite.” Being an establishment of fine dining, many succulent dishes have become mainstays over the last thirty years: “Prime rib, steaks, seafood—there’s our

Peppercorn and Chutney Filet,” says Ken; “that’s a very popular item served with fettuccine. We also have some very nice made-in-house desserts. Our raspberries with Russian cream is easily our most popular; but we make our own chocolate cake from Phyllis Vanscoy’s home recipe, and that’s very good as well.” Delicious desserts, award winning wines and fine foods aren’t the only components in the restaurant industry, however. As many a restaurateur has discovered, atmosphere & service—these are key ingredients you'll experience that aren't listed on the menu. When asked about the Prime Rib’s success, Ed said: “I believe it’s our staff that’s responsible. You can come in and ask how long people have been here and you’d be impressed. I’ve got two or three people who have been here twenty-five years, another two for fifteen, and a couple have been here five—they all know my motto: 'Good food does not survive bad service.' which is an old saying in this business that is definitely true.” That’s not only is it a good motto, it’s the right attitude. Fine dining and quality service are the watermarks that define The Prime Rib; a restaurant that more than lives up to its name. ∑

Camping is a popular outdoor activity that attracts many enthusiasts year after year. Some people camp every month while others only have time for one great excursion into the wilderness each year. This year, millions of camping trips will take place across the country. Preparation is key to a successful camping trip. Whether campers plan to spend one night or several in the great outdoors, there are certain tips to follow to ensure your trip is as fun and safe as possible. Gear In order to be comfortable, stock up on camping gear. Tents, sleeping bags and other gear need not be the most expensive. Quality, moderately priced gear works well, too. With care and maintenance, camping gear can last for several years. A tent will be your first line of defense against the outdoors. Although plenty of people prefer to sleep out under the stars, a tent is a place to avoid inclement weather and insects and have a little privacy. Your tent need not be too big, unless you plan to share it with many of your fellow campers. Since you will be spending the majority of your time outdoors, don’t feel pressured to buy the tent equivalent of a three-room suite.

PAGE 18

A good tent should be sturdy, weatherresistant and large enough to fit the people who will be sleeping in it during your trip. Invest in a pad to place on the floor of the tent to shield you from the hard ground. The pad will make sleeping more comfortable. If you will be sleeping during warm-weather months, you don’t have to worry about an expensive sleeping bag. An averageweight one will be just fine. Don’t forget to pack a pillow. A cooler filled with foods and drinks will tide you over for the trip. If you plan to cook, you will need to bring the ingredients for meals. Otherwise sandwiches should suffice. Some campgrounds have grills and picnic tables available. Otherwise, you can cook hot dogs right over your open campfire. Where to camp Campsites may be public or private. Public campgrounds are generally funded by tax dollars and maintained by parks departments or government offices. They may be free to enter or charge a nominal fee for use. Because of the low cost involved, they may be quite popular and crowded during peak camping season. Private campsites are run by private companies or individuals and may also feature RV hookups. In many instances,

www.HouseHunterEtc.com

JUNE 2013

private campsites sell memberships to interested parties, which gives access to certain private areas. They may have more amenities than public campsites. Private sites also may employ security personnel and maintenance crews

to ensure the areas are clean and safe and to enforce campground rules. This may not be the case at public campsites, where conditions may be inconsistent from site to site. An online search of both public and private campsites nearby can help you determine which option best suits you. Consider national parks, national forests and even the Army Corps of Engineers, which manages many recreational areas. Avoid critters Animals and insects are part of the camping experience. While they are unavoidable, there are some measures you can take to reduce the propensity for bothersome bug bites or clever critters raiding the cooler. Keeping a clean campsite is perhaps the most effective animal and insect deterrent. Ants and animals are attracted to food bits scattered around the site, so be sure to gather trash and dispose of it properly each day. Try not to store food on the ground. Whenever possible, keep food locked away in an airtight cooler or other container. Dry foods can be stored under lock and key in the car. Raccoons, squirrels, birds, and skunks all have been known to patrol campgrounds for an easy meal. Also, you don’t want to lure in larger predators, such as bears or wild cats. To avoid insects, steer clear of perfumed products. Keep lights dim at night, as bright lights attract mosquitoes and other biting bugs. Use appropriate insect repellents to help further repel bugs. Closer isn’t always better Many new campers make the mistake of choosing campsites that are in close proximity to bathrooms and clubhouses

JUNE 2013

www.HouseHunterEtc.com

and other reminders of civilization. But these areas tend to feature heavy foot and car traffic and can make for a noisy experience. To avoid the lights, sounds and bustle of too many people, stick with campsites farther off the beaten path. You may need to walk a little farther, but you will likely enjoy a more peaceful camping experience. Plan for the wetness Even if it doesn’t rain, dew is an inevitable part of camping outdoors. Warm weather with high humidity can make dew even more plentiful. Use a shower curtain or another plastic impenetrable liner beneath your tent to reduce wetness and chilliness while you sleep. Be sure to bring in clothes and remove items from your clotheslines before you retire for the night if you don’t want them damp the next morning. Use tarps to cover anything that should not get wet. Be sure to pack plenty of dry socks and changes of clothes and store them in zipper-top bags in the event clothing does get wet. Wet clothes can be uncomfortable and increase your risk for hypothermia. Carry in and carry out Part of the magic of camping is being able to enjoy nature and experience the great outdoors. It is crucial to protect natural landscapes as much as possible and to exercise caution around plant life. In addition, be mindful of animal habitats. What you bring to the campsite, including trash, should be removed when you are done. Do not leave a mess behind. Camping can be an enjoyable and inexpensive vacation option. Learning the ropes and heeding some advice can make camping an enjoyable getaway year after year. ∑

“Workin’ on Night Crew” Onto the mud-slick coal road—there was the truck, drifting backwards, wheels turning this way and that as Melody fought for control. Cleatus only had one shot. He ran as fast and graceful as he could—which, given the mud, was more frog-like than anything else. He gave the truck a twenty-foot berth, sprinting to the side. A ladder stretched down its front. Cleatus jogged around until the lights bathed him, then he took a breath, fixed his caffeinated tunnelvision on metal rungs, and, slip-sliding through the mud, managed to run forward, wrap pudgy fingers around the rails, and climb aboard, legs dragging behind for just a second. Melody in the cab was screaming over the engine’s din. Seconds later and Cleatus was ondeck, motioning for Melody to drop the radio and jump to the passenger’s seat. At first she seemed dumbfounded at his random arrival, but shortly she got the idea and scooted. Cleatus ripped open the cab door: “Buckle in, kid,” then grabbed the radio: “Fifteen, Steve, I got this,” and hung up. “Cleatus? Cleatus! What’re you doing outta your truck!” Cleatus ignored it. Melody chimed in: “You know you’re not supposed to get out the truck in the pit ‘less we’re lined up for shiftchange—” “Be quiet! I gotta figure this out!” Cleatus exhaled slowly, turned the wheel. The truck began to slide left, tipping. Coal spilled off the sides, Melody shrieked to wake the dead. Cleatus grit his teeth, turned deeper into the maneuver, felt the wheels on his right lift off the ground— Then they were spun, facing down the six-percent, headed directly for the truck Cleatus had parked against the berm on the other side of the road. He said some colorful things in Spanish. Melody put hands over her eyes. Cleatus would always remember the event shrink-wrapped in a stimulant fugue. The brakes locked, everything slid, he couldn’t dump the load. His only choice was to accelerate into the decline until they made the curve; then the six-percent planed out and they could find somewhere to park. But a massive load of coal stretched all down the lane they were in. Coal Cleatus had recently dumped from his own truck to save his own skin. “Fifteen to 346, what’s happening!” Melody reached for the CB; Cleatus stopped her through grit teeth: “Ignore it!” and spun the wheel. They slid left, straddled the two-foot high, even-spread trail of coal leading to Cleatus’ truck. A red light flashed on the dashboard and a warning PAGE 20

A Mine with a View began to buzz, saying the brakes were overloaded. A low-pitched PHOOMPH! was a bout of flame shooting from the brakes squeezing the left wheel. Another PHOOMPH! and flame shot out the right side. Melody began to wail. In a lightning bright flash, Cleatus realized he couldn’t maneuver away from the truck in front without dumping the load, but he couldn’t do that unless the parking brake was set. Which would blow the motors on all four wheels, due to the pressures associated with that much tonnage pressing down on the truck while they traveled the six percent. PHOOMPH! PHOOMPH—WOMP— went the wheels. “Hold on tight—” Cleatus pulled the dump-lever— 346 bucked, the bed wouldn’t go. They were facing downward, stressing the bejesus out of the motor. “C’mon,” Cleatus prayed. “C’mon—!” They slid closer. A hundred feet left, maybe— “We’re gonna crash!” Melody squealed. “C’mon, c’mon—!” Ka-CHUNK! BOOOOM! The front wheels leapt as the bed rose; enough so that the truck slid a different direction—toward the side of the road that ended in a cliff. At two miles an hour, brake lights screaming in harmony with Melody, bouts of brake-flame making drums and Cleatus underscoring with a deepthroated wail of Latino funk, truck 346 hurled toward certain destruction. Then, at the very last second—a creak, a squeal— BANG! CRASH! The bed smashed down. “Yes!” Cleatus yelled, let off the brake—they had a maneuvering edge, now. Melody peeked from behind trembling hands: “Will we make it?” “I don’t know…” The brakes were burned out, all they had left were those that slowed the engine. “346, what’s going on down there!” Cleatus grabbed the CB: “Got ‘er dumped, Steve; blew the brakes, though. Gonna have to send in Ulrich.” (Ulrich was a German mechanic who worked B-crew’s shift.) “You burned the brakes out—!” “But we didn’t crash the

www.HouseHunterEtc.com

truck! And we ain’t out the woods yet, fifteen!” They were about to pass Cleatus’ vehicle. There was precious little room. Concern in his eyes, Cleatus turned to Melody. Melody, redheaded, gorgeous, petite—totally out of place behind the wheel of a 1.5 million-pound, fully loaded haul truck in the dead of night, and scared witless. When she met his gaze, Cleatus said only: “Hold onto something,” and turned forward. He put his foot on the gas and they accelerated to twenty miles an hour. Thirty. Thirty-five— Cleatus slammed the dynamicretarder (that was the engine brake, not Forest Gump) and spun the wheel. His caffeine-induced tunnel vision painted the world in vivid slow-mo. They were spinning, spinning, spinning—hundreds of tons of metal and mud, pirouetting like some steampunk steel ballerina. There was 365. Now the cab was sliding past its front—CRASH! Too quick to blink, passenger-side mirrors destroyed one another as Cleatus spun the wheel; tipping the truck onto two wheels— WHOOM!! The tires came down like a cannon. 346 slid down the rest of the sixpercent until it leveled out. Cleatus dynamited the dynamicretarder until the truck slowed to four miles an hour, then three, then two, then none. He pulled the parking lever. Melody brought her hands down, turned to Cleatus, saw the rain around them, breathed, stifled a whimper, and finally stuttered: “W-we made it!” Cleatus swallowed; replied: “Yup. And you owe us donuts next shift, sweetheart,” then left the cab. The End

June is Men’s Health Month

Diet Advice All Men Can Heed...

Very few men jump at the chance to go on a diet. Eating smaller portions while saying “goodbye” to some of your favorite foods is never easy, especially for men who find it hard to resist a bucket of chicken wings or a juicy steak with all the trimmings. Though sacrifice is a part of any successful diet, there’s more than one way for men to lose weight and keep the weight off once it’s gone. The following are a few simple tips for men who want to start eating healthier without making drastic changes to their diets. • Don’t eat after dinner. It might sound simple, but many men eat mindlessly even when they aren’t hungry, and this eating frequently usually occurs after dinner. This can contribute to weight gain, especially if you’re snacking on unhealthy fare like potato chips or cookies. When eating late at night, your body might have a hard time breaking down carbs into energy before you go to bed. If it does, your body will then store it as fat. If you must eat after dinner, avoid carbs in favor of a low-calorie snack. • Don’t mistake dehydration for hunger. The symptoms of dehydration are similar to those of hunger, so it’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger. If you find yourself feeling some hunger pangs even if you just ate, pour yourself a glass of water instead of reaching for a snack.

You’ll avoid consuming unnecessary calories when you might just need to rehydrate. • Don’t forget a diet is not just about subtraction. Many men feel a diet is all about subtracting foods, but you can also add healthier fare. Add more fruits and vegetables, which can boost your immune system, making you less susceptible to colds and other ailments. If you aren’t a fan of vegetables on their own, incorporate them into your recipes rather than serving them as a side dish. Vegetables can add flavor to a host of dishes, including pasta, stir fry and even sandwiches. • Divide and conquer your calories. Dividing your calorie consumption into several smaller meals as opposed to three meals per day is another way to control appetite and weight. Often referred to as “grazing,” this approach to eating involves eating five or six smaller, healthy meals each day in an effort to keep the body’s metabolism going all day. This helps men burn more calories and gets them used to eating smaller portions. Though the efficacy of grazing has been questioned, many men and women stand by it as an effective way to lose weight and keep the weight off once it’s gone.

• Pack in the protein. Research has shown that, when combined with exercise, a diet that is high in protein and moderate in carbohydrates can make it easier to lose weight. Healthy protein sources like yogurt, beans and nuts make the body feel full while encouraging it to burn fat. In addition, protein helps preserve muscle mass and can aid in muscle recovery, which makes for an added benefit for men who are dieting and exercising. • Drink water. Water is a dieter’s best friend, especially if that dieter has traditionally been fond of high-calorie beverages like soda. Such beverages can pack on the pounds and are often less effective at quenching thirst than a simple glass of water. If water is too bland for you, add a drop of lemon or lime juice. ∑

Shortcuts to a Lush Lawn Many homeowners aspire to having a lush, green lawn as the showcase of their properties. The front lawn can make a statement and indicate to the passersby the property owners’ personalities and design preferences. Lawn care takes some dedication and hard work, but there are certain ways to cut down on the amount of effort required to maintain a landscape. By employing a few shortcuts, you can have a healthy, lush lawn without spending all of your free time cutting the grass or pruning the trees. Stop Weeds At The Start Weeding is one of the most timeconsuming parts of maintaining a lawn. Weeds can proliferate throughout the lawn if not addressed in a timely manner. Once weeds take root they can become a nuisance, so it’s best to treat weeds before they even have a chance to sprout. Apply a pre-emergent weed control product as soon as possible in the spring and then reapply it about three months later to ensure weeds are eradicated. That equates to much less tedious lawn maintenance during the season. Plant A Urine-Resistant Grass Having a dog and maintaining a lush lawn has always been a particular conundrum for homeowners. Dog urine is high in nitrogen. While nitrogen, when applied in the correct ratio, can be a lawn-growth stimulant, in the large concentration that occurs in pet urine, it causes the grass to dry up and burn, resulting in bare spots. Replanting with urine-resistant grasses can help cut down on the level of damage to the lawn from pets. Try perennial ryegrasses and fescues. Wake Up and Water Watering in the early mornings saves time and energy in the long run by fostering a tougher, more drought-resistant lawn. If you water early in the day, less water

PAGE 28

will be lost to evaporation. Limit watering to a few times per week, and less if you have had adequate rain. Avoid watering at night, which can expose the lawn to bacteria and attract insects. Mow When the Lawn is Dry It’s not advisable to mow the lawn when it is wet. Slippery conditions can not only make it more dangerous to push a mower, but also slow down the time it can take to tackle the chore. The mower blades can become clogged and coated with wet grass clippings, necessitating stopping and starting the task. Another thing to consider, lawn diseases spread more readily through wet clippings. Stick to mowing when the lawn is completely dry. Let Clippings Fly Mulching mowers, or those that just distribute clippings on the lawn as you go, can be healthier for the grass. They will serve as fertilizer and redistribute nutrients to the lawn as they breakdown into the soil. Plus, you save time bagging up clippings. Mow less often. Raise the mower’s blade so that the grass is longer in between cuttings. The taller grass will shade the soil and block weeds from germinating. It also helps improve soil’s moisture retention. Don’t Cut Corners Adjusting a landscape design to have arches and curves can reduce the time it takes to mow and edge a property. Hard corners in a landscape will require more time to keep straight and pristine. Caring for a lawn can take less time and effort than you think. ∑ www.HouseHunterEtc.com

Handy Shortcuts To Make Meal Time Easier The benefits of home cooking are well known. Cooking at home allows you to control the ingredients you use, which often makes for a more nutritious meal. This also makes it easier for those with food allergies or dietary restrictions to make healthy meals that won’t make them sick. But what if you have a demanding schedule with little time for gourmet cooking? Thankfully, a busy schedule does not mean you have to forgo cooking at home. Instead, simply employ a few shortcuts to help prepare delicious meals quickly and easily. Embrace Convenience Items One of the misconceptions about home cooking is that everything has to be made from scratch to qualify as real cooking. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Although picking up a frozen pizza and tossing it in the oven may stretch the definition of cooking, that doesn’t mean you cannot rely on a few convenience items to take some of the work out of meal preparation. For example, if you want to prepare a quiche, you may be off-put by the work involved in preparing a base crust. Using a pre-made pie shell or refrigerated pie dough can cut a lot of time off of your quiche creation but still yield a tasty finished product. A marriage of fresh and convenience ingredients can make it easier to prepare more home-cooked meals. Plan Ahead Nothing can waste more time than running through meal ideas in your head at the last minute or discovering you have to run to the store because you’re missing a key ingredient. Instead of playing the “what are we going to have for dinner” game every night, which often leads to ordering takeout, spend some time planning your weekly menu. This way you can do the bulk of your shopping in one trip and know exactly what to defrost or have available for that day. JUNE 2013

Double-Up Recipes If you find you don’t have time to cook every day of the week, create larger meals that can be wrapped up and served again later in the week. Some foods like roasted chicken or pot roast can be turned into completely new meals with a few additional ingredients. Transform leftover chicken into a pot pie and serve extra slices of roast beef “openface” with gravy and wheat bread for a fast lunch or dinner another day. If you’re spending time cooking, it shouldn’t take much more effort to double or triple a recipe to ensure you have extra available for a night when you might need to pop leftovers in the microwave or toaster oven.

3 T all-purpose flour 1/2 t salt 1/4 t black pepper 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (4 ounces each) 1 T olive oil 1 T butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 3/4 cup chicken broth 1 T fresh lemon juice 2 T chopped Italian parsley 1 T drained capers

Embrace The Slow Cooker A slow cooker can be a busy cook’s best asset in the kitchen. Slow cookers cook foods over very low heat and can be programmed or set to turn on at a specific time and cook while you’re out running errands or at work. Because it draws a small amount of power, there is little risk for an accident when leaving the slow cooker unattended. Use it to make soups, stews, casseroles, sauces, and even shredded meats for Sloppy Joe’s or pulled-pork sandwiches.

2. Place chicken between sheets of plastic wrap. Using flat side of meat mallet or rolling pin, pound chicken to 1/2-inch thickness. Coat chicken with flour mixture, shaking off excess.

Serve Breakfast For Dinner On nights when you need a fast meal and may not have too many ingredients in the refrigerator, serving eggs, pancakes or waffles for dinner can make for an easy, tasty meal. Eggs can be enhanced with leftover vegetables for a veggie omelette, while Belgian waffles can be spiced up with bits of sausage and pepper in the batter. Picky eaters who are more inclined to gobble-up pancakes than enjoy a good steak may enjoy breakfast for dinner more than a traditional meal at the end of the day. ∑ www.HouseHunterEtc.com

1. Combine flour, salt and pepper in a shallow pie plate. Reserve 1 tablespoon flour mixture.

3. Heat oil and butter in large nonstick skillet over medium heat until butter is melted. Cook chicken 4 to 5 minutes per side or until no longer pink in center. Transfer to serving platter and cover loosely with foil. 4. Add garlic to same skillet; cook and stir over medium heat 1 minute. Add reserved flour mixture; cook and stir 1 minute. Add broth and lemon juice; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until sauce thickens. Stir in parsley and capers; spoon sauce over chicken. Serves 4 PAGE 33

• On June 4, 1896, Henry Ford unveils the “Quadricycle.” The 500-pound vehicle had two driving speeds, no reverse, no brakes, rudimentary steering ability and a doorbell button as a horn. It could reach about 20 mph. • On June 7, 1913, Hudson Stuck, an Alaskan missionary, leads the first successful ascent of Mt. McKinley, the highest point on the American continent at 20,320 feet. Stuck and two others began the climb in March and faced challenges of difficult weather and a fire at one of their camps, which destroyed food and supplies. • On June 6, 1933, eager motorists park their automobiles on the grounds of the Park-In movie theater in New Jersey, the first-ever drive-in movie theater. Inventor Richard Hollingshead had come up with the idea in the driveway of his own house, where he perfected projection and sound techniques. • On June 8, 1949, Hollywood figures, including film stars Frederic March and Edward G. Robinson, are named in a FBI report as Communist Party members. The FBI report relied largely on accusations made by “confidential informants,” supplemented with some highly dubious analysis. Helen Keller also was on the list of radicals. • On June 5, 1968, U.S. Sen. Robert Kennedy is shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after winning the California presidential primary. Kennedy was shot by 22-year-old Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan, and died a day later. • On June 9, 1972, a flash flood hits Rapid City, S.D., when 15 inches of rain fall in only six hours. The spillway for the Pactola Dam got clogged with debris, leading to the collapse of the dam and a devastating wave of water that crushed most of the nearby buildings and swept away 238 people. • On June 3, 1989, with protests for democratic reforms entering their seventh week, the Chinese government authorizes its soldiers and tanks to reclaim Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. By nightfall on June 4, Chinese troops had forcibly cleared the square, killing hundreds and arresting thousands of demonstrators and suspected dissidents. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc. JUNE 2013

In many ways, today’s kids have busier schedules than any previous generation of youngsters. Many extracurricular activities, including sports, require a nearly year-round commitment, and the dual-income household has landed many kids in after school programs where kids tend to their schoolwork or engage in various activities that hopefully keep them out of trouble. But those busy schedules get a lot less hectic when the school year ends. Once school is out, kids used to a full schedule might find themselves with lots of time on their hands. Though it’s good for kids to squeeze in some rest and relaxation during their summer break, it’s also important for kids to stay active so they don’t develop poor habits as the summer goes on. Kids who are physically active are more capable of coping with stress and tend to have higher self-esteem than kids who do not include physical activity as part of their regular routines.

PAGE 36

The following are a few suggestions for parents looking for ways to keep their kids active throughout the summer while still allowing them to recharge their batteries after a long school year. • Plan An Active Vacation Summer is when many families go on vacation, so why not choose a vacation that involves more than napping poolside? Though it’s still good to leave some time for relaxation, find a locale where you can embrace activities like snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, or other adventures that get you and your youngsters off the poolside chaise and out exploring. Such a trip might inspire kids to embrace an activity more fully, getting them off the couch not only while they’re on vacation but also when they return home for the rest of summer. • Teach Kids To Garden Gardening might be seen as a peaceful and relaxing hobby, but it still requires a lot of elbow grease and hard work that pays physical dividends. A garden

www.HouseHunterEtc.com

must be planted, hoed, weeded, and watered, and gardening gets kids out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. When growing a vegetable garden, kids might embrace the chance to be directly involved in the foods that will eventually end up on their dinner tables. Parents can embrace this as an opportunity to teach the value of eating locally-produced foods and the positive impact such behavior has on the environment. • Go Swimming Few adults who work in offices haven’t looked out their windows on a sunny summer day and thought how nice it would be to be spending that afternoon making a few laps in a lake, at the beach or in a pool. Kids have the same daydreams during the summer, so take a day off every so often and take the kids for an afternoon of swimming. Swimming is a great activity that exercises the entire body, including the shoulders, back, legs, hips, and abdominals. It’s hard for some people to find a place to swim once the warm weather departs, so take advantage of the summer weather and go swimming as often as possible while the kids are not in school. • Limit the Time Kids Spend Watching TV or Playing Video Games Many of today’s kids are as tech savvy as they are busy. But it’s important that kids don’t spend too much time online or on the couch watching television or playing video games. Such activities are largely sedentary, and they can set a bad precedent for the months ahead, even when the school year begins once again. Parents should limit how much time their youngsters spend in front of the television or the computer during summer vacation, keeping track and turning the TV or computer off if they suspect kids are spending too much time staring at the screen instead of being active. Kids might not love it when you turn their video games off or minimize their access to social media, but explain the limitations at the onset of summer and let kids know you expect them to be physically active even if it is summer vacation. ∑

Great Gift Ideas for Father's Day is right around the corner and that means many children, spouses and other family members will be scrambling to locate the perfect gifts for the men in their lives. Put away those coupons for neckties and remote control caddies. There's a good chance Dad wants something a little less cliche and more in tune with his interests. If you think carefully about gift ideas, there's bound to be something that will be a perfect fit. Sports If Dad follows a particular team or sport, gifts inspired by his love of a favorite team are a surefire bet for success. Team jerseys, game memorabilia, tickets to the next at-home game, or an expanded satellite dish or cable TV sports programming package are some gift ideas that will coordinate with a sports theme. Some dads also may be content to simply hit the links or spend a few hours at the batting cages. Personalized Gifts Personalized gifts can show that special man in your life that you care about him in a special way. Instead of a run-of-the-mill item pulled off a store

DAD

shelf, a personalized gift can feature a name, date or sentiment right on the gift itself. Think about giving Dad a personalized plaque that designates his work area in the garage or a pocket lighter or photo frame engraved with a special message or his name. An embroidered bath robe, or a golf bag embroidered with his initials may also be a special treat. Fit for Foodies As the adage goes, "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach." Take advantage of these words of wisdom by gifting your Dad with food or culinarythemed items. Dad may be an amateur chef and will enjoy a cookbook. Or he may have a restaurant he insists on going to all the time, so guaranteeing a gift card to said restaurant will be a hit. If Dad appreciates not only the taste, but also the culture of food, plan a tour of food shops in the area or go on a wineand cheese-tasting adventure. Gear Heads Some dads get revved up about automotive gifts, especially if they spend the weekends pampering their prized cars or trucks. If he tends to have a

wrench in hand and head under the hood, treat your father to some new supplies for his automotive pursuits. Quality car waxes and upholstery cleaners are always in demand. Or give him a gift certificate to his favorite handwash, auto-detailing center. Gas station gift cards or a new ratchet set are other good auto gift ideas. Techies Some dads get excited about the latest tablets or smartphones. They may keep abreast of virus-detection software or think the technological gadgets sold in those speciality magazines and mall stores are must-haves. Chances are if you spend enough time with Dad you know just what he likes to dabble in, and you can get him an electronic device he'll find invaluable. Although it may seem difficult on the surface to find a gift for Dad that he truly will enjoy and use, all it takes is a close examination of his likes to find something appropriate. ∑
