Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor. 5. Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy.

Throw pillows are accessories that can easily and inexpensively change the look of a space. Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessity, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most wellintentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight. What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are seven projects that won’t break the bank. 1. Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the

You Will Need: Felt: small pieces of white, tan and brown Ribbon: about 3 inches of purple Embroidery thread 1. Cut two body pieces from white, one face from tan, and one beard from brown. 2. Cut the center sections from the beard by folding it in half. It’s almost easier to just freehand it and give it your best shot than it is to try and use the pattern when cutting like this. Just be aware, the beard is what will give your puppet its personality. That, and the eyes. Speaking of which, stitch the eyes on the face piece with french or colonial knots. 3. Place the beard over the face and stitch all around it with running stitch and matching brown embroidery floss. I used all six strands. 4. Hold the two body pieces together and place the ribbon on an angle. Stitch all around the sides and top of the finger puppet body, making sure that you get a few stitches in each side of the ribbon sash. 5. Trim the edges of the ribbon to match the sides of the body and you’re all set to go!

How To Litter Box Train Your Bunny

health of a rabbit. Rabbits will eat the cecotropes as they exit the body. Fecal pellets are not usually eaten and are the droppings that will need to be contained.

Rabbits can make wonderful pets. If you want a pet but cats and dogs aren’t for you, a rabbit can fill the void. Although rabbits may need less interaction than a dog, they still require a lot of responsibility and commitment. The task of caring for a rabbit is made easier by training your rabbit to use a litter box. Many people have pet rabbits, and after a little training, these animals can roam the house just like other pets. Contrary to popular belief, rabbits aren’t dirty. In fact, this reputation often stems from inattentiveness and lack of cleaning on the part of the pet parent. In reality, rabbits are “prey” animals who will instinctively keep a clean home to prevent the build up of odor that would reveal the location of their dens to potential predators. Rabbits can be raised as social animals that like to interact with human handlers. Whether a rabbit is sociable is not breed-specific. This is largely dependent on the care and handling from the owner. Raised from a kit, rabbits can be accustomed to handling any human interaction and be very companionable pets. What deters many people from rabbits is unfamiliarity with one as a pet and the prospect of many droppings being left around the house. Unlike other mammals, rabbits and other lagomorphs produce two types of droppings. Fecal pellets are the commonly found ones that are round and dry. These can be seen in piles and can number in the dozens. Rabbits will also produce cecotropes, which are formed in a region of the rabbit’s digestive tract. These cecotropes contain important nutrients and healthy bacteria and fungi, which are essential to the

It has been said that rabbits can often be litter box trained and seldom have accidents outside of the box. Rabbits prefer one or two places to put their waste. To start the process you will need patience. * Buy a litter box that the rabbit can easily access. Standard cat litter boxes often work well. * Confine the rabbit to one room and place the litter box in the cage with the rabbit. * Observe where the rabbit likes to relieve itself. If it’s in the litter box, this is a great first step. If not, simply move the litter box where the rabbit is doing its business. * Once successful, give the rabbit a little bit of freedom at a time. Try letting the rabbit out of the cage in the confined room with the litter box nearby. * Gradually give the rabbit more freedom, luring it to the box with treats and praise. Make sure the pet is aware of the litter box’s location. * If the bunny continually makes mistakes, it could be a signal that the rabbit would like the litter box moved to a different spot closer to where the accidents are occurring. * It may take locating a few boxes around a large space before a rabbit grows acclimated to using the litter box. Then you can gradually reduce the number of boxes. Rabbits can take time to catch on to litter box training, and even when you’re fairly certain the training is complete, you may still find a few pellets left near the box. Some people overlook rabbits as pets because of fear of the unknown and the idea of droppings all over the home. However, rabbits can make affectionate and agreeable pets for families that have the time to devote to training. As someone who has had pet rabbits, I can personally endorse them as amazing.

Setup for success: Outdoor Weddings

2015

Outdoor weddings are romantic when done right, and a growing number of couples are exchanging vows amid an expansive garden or with the splendor of the pounding surf providing a picturesque backdrop. If Mother Nature cooperates, outdoor weddings can go smoothly. But even if the weather does not cooperate, there still are ways couples can enjoy a memorable ceremony.

HouseHunterWY.com

power outlets. Guests will certainly want to hear the vows, and that may require the use of microphones and a sound system. Having power available also makes it easier for bands and musicians to set up their equipment for an outdoor reception. If the wedding will be stretching into the evening hours, electricity will be needed to power supplemental lighting that illuminates the festivities.

Preparation and planning help keep outdoor weddings moving along. Weather can be unpredictable and unforgiving, so it is always best to account for various scenarios. The following are some tips to consider. * Be mindful of hot weather. Many outdoor weddings occur when temperatures are at their warmest. As anyone who has had to sit outdoors in the blazing sun for an extended period of time can attest, it can grow quite uncomfortable, especially when everyone is dressed to the nines. Advise guests in advance that the wedding will be taking place outdoors and to dress accordingly. Arrange to have shaded areas for guests who may struggle with the heat. Keep chilled bottled water nearby so guests can stay cool and refreshed. Ask the officiant to keep the ceremony brief so that guests are not melting away in their seats. * Keep wind in mind. A stiff breeze can upset tents and wreak havoc on hairstyles. Be sure everything outdoors is properly secured and weighted down. Avoid light fabrics on a wedding gown that will get swept away by wind. A short, blusher veil may be more appropriate than a sweeping train. Couples should advise their hairstylists that they will be getting married outdoors, and looks should be well secured by bobby pins and gel to keep hair in place. Stick to real dishes for food service, as plastic or lightweight materials may get blown away. * Check for power sources. Choose a wedding location with easily accessible

Page 23

easier. Also, choose a location that isn’t too far off the beaten path. It should be close enough to a parking lot and not require guests to have to take an extended hike through nature. * Face away from the sun. Glares can make it difficult for guests to see the ceremony. Be sure to arrange seats so that guests do not have to look into the sun. This is best achieved by having the sun behind everyone for the ceremony. It also ensures that you won’t end up with washed-out photos or pictures of everyone squinting. * Ensure food is properly chilled or heated. Dining outdoors means keeping food safety in mind. Food that is supposed to be kept cool should remain on ice or be refrigerated until served. Hot foods should remain hot. Food in chafing dishes or served buffet-style also should be protected from insects. Improper handling of food can result in foodborne illnesses. No one wants to remember a wedding for intestinal discomfort.

Be sure it won’t rain on your outdoor wedding: Plan for all the possibilities so that an outdoor ceremony or reception goes as smoothly as possible. * Ensure accessibility. Outdoor terrain can prove tricky, especially for older guests or those with mobility issues. When scouting locations, select a wheelchair-accessible spot that can be easily traversed. Understand that turf can become water-logged and challenging to walk over should it rain the day of the wedding or prior. Plastic or fabric runners may make things

* Use fresh flowers in potted plants. Cut flowers tend to wilt prematurely in hot weather. Rather than waste money and beautiful flowers, choose potted plants that will thrive if well-tended. Guests can then take the plants home and continue to cherish the wedding long after it is over. * Budget for a tent. It is always better to have a contingency plan. Even if you have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, have a backup plan in place if the weather is uncooperative. A tent with surrounding sidewalls may be sufficient. Otherwise, determine if there is an indoor location that can be kept on standby. * Mix up the candles. Intersperse citronella candles with the decorative ones to help keep bugs at bay. You can also consider placing small bottles of insect repellent on the tables. Guests will appreciate the gesture when biting flies or mosquitoes want to join in the fun.

Mitigating Water Leaks --Q: I’ve read that ice dams and roof damage can lead to water leaks, but how can I find them? And what can I do if I find a leak? -- Janice L., Portsmouth, N.H. A: If you’ve noticed ice buildup along your eaves outside, it’s a good idea to check inside in those same areas for water leaks. Take a flashlight and go to the part of the house that’s as close as possible to the suspect area. Using the flashlight, check the wall and ceiling for light-brown water spots or streaks. If you see them, a leak likely has been occurring for a few days. Run your hand along the wall and ceiling around the area, whether you see water spots or not (stand on a stepladder, not a chair or furniture). If the drywall or ceiling plaster feels damp, cold or a bit spongy in one spot, a leak may be forming. If you smell mildew or mold in an area, dampness is a problem and may be caused by a leak. Mark this and other potential problem areas with a pencil or blue painter’s tape. A leak needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Contact a roofing professional to schedule an inspection and get a quote to remove the ice dams and repair the roof, as well as seal up leaks. Before the contractor arrives, start minimizing the water damage indoors. Open up the wall or ceiling a bit to let water flow through freely. In the ceiling, punch a small hole in the center of the damp or water-stained area with a nail, and place a bucket underneath to catch drips. Leaks behind a wall are more complicated: Often a section of drywall needs to be cut away, as close to the leak source as possible, and a bucket or pan placed beneath the drip. If you have no experience repairing or replacing drywall, enlist an experienced friend or call a contractor to quickly stop further damage until the roof can be repaired. You also may need to contact an electrician to make sure any wiring in a leak-affected area is OK. TIP: To avoid dampness or leaks in the cellar, shovel snow a foot or two away from the foundation when possible.

How To Go Green At The Grocery Store

Eco-friendly shoppers can focus on organic items, including produce, to decrease their carbon footprints

residual pesticides and herbicides. Even produce that is not labeled “organic” may be organic. To determine if it is, look at the sticker

where employees cook foods right inside of the supermarket, a practice that cuts down on shipping of pre-made frozen foods produced elsewhere. Many stores carry their own homemade breads, cakes, doughnuts, dinner entrees, and sandwiches. * Ask questions in the meat department. Don’t be shy about asking store butchers where the beef and chicken for sale comes from. If the meat and poultry is not locally raised and all-natural, look for alternatives in the store or shop elsewhere. * Shop only the perimeter of the store. Many stores stock dietary staples along the outer edges of the store. The interior bulk of the store contains packaged, processed foods that are not as ecofriendly.

While adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle might seem like a major commitment, many people find such an endeavor is far easier than they initially expected, as some relatively minor modifications here or there can make a substantial impact on the environment. One of the easiest ways to go green is to make more eco-friendly choices at the grocery store. Shopping for and preparing meals can be done in an eco-friendly way, and men and women will be happy to know they’re not only making changes that benefit the planet but their personal health as well. Here are some ideas for going green at the grocery store that do not require a big commitment. * Begin in the produce aisle. When shopping for produce, stock up on plenty of organic fruits and vegetables, which are now readily available at many grocery stores. Stick to organic for the “dirty dozen” foods, those which are the most likely to have high levels of

codes on the fruits and vegetables. A four-digit code means it was conventionally grown, while five-digit codes starting with an eight indicate genetically modified food. A five-digit code starting with nine indicates the item is organic. While shopping, ask the produce manager if the store sells locally grown produce, and purchase only those products when they are available. * Buy only what you need. Shoppers are often tempted to go from aisle to aisle, buying items they both need and don’t need. Caving in to such temptation can be wasteful unless items purchased have long shelf lives. Before visiting the store, make a shopping list and stick with it. Not only will you save money, but you will avoid throwing out spoiled foods as well. * Purchase store-made items. If you’re looking for deli meats or bread for dinner, visit the stores’ bakeries, kitchens and delis,

* Buy in bulk whenever possible. Stock up on staples like toilet paper and other items. Bulk items are packaged together, which reduces the amount of packaging needed. Separate meat and poultry into smaller portion sizes at home before freezing. * Bring reusable tote bags. Even though many plastic shopping bags are made from recycled materials, many of these bags end up in the trash after use. Reusable cloth bags are more eco-friendly. Just be sure to wash them frequently so you clean them of any bacteria that may accumulate over time.

Garden-Inspired Decor Brightens Spaces And Mood

Many homeowners take up gardening to transform their homes with beautiful flowers and foliage, while others do so to yield fresh fruits and vegetables. But gardening can be more than just a weekend hobby. In fact, it may be especially beneficial for homeowners to surround themselves with more plants and natural decor, whether in the yard or in the home.

who can suggest a design and put in your desired water features. Add fish suitable for outdoor life to your pond. These include koi and certain goldfish varieties. Game fish are discouraged because they can destroy pond plants. If an outdoor pond is more maintenance than you desire, consider an indoor aquarium with a combination of fish and live aquarium plants.

Studies have indicated that gardening can be good for the mind and body. In addition to improving mood and reducing stress, plant life and gardening also may help people have a more hopeful outlook on life. If reaping the benefit of a beautiful landscape is not reason enough to get into gardening, elevating your mood and coping with depression or illness may be even further motivation to start developing your green thumb.

• Creative furniture designs: Maybe you’re a person who appreciates the unique and whimsical? Tables, benches and chairs can be built with planting channels that enable you to have greenery and garden décor in one piece. Envision a picnic table with a cutout down the center for a thin row of plants or decorative grasses. This is a project the entire family can get behind, as the more creative ideas the better.

Home-design trends seem to be following suit, offering individuals more opportunities to surround themselves with potentially therapeutic plants. Explore these emerging and established garden décor trends to try in and around your home.

• Improved outdoor lighting: People who like to spend time in their gardens and yards may not want to be limited by sunrise and sunset. By incorporating different lighting sources, you can create a retreat that is welcoming at any hour. Although flood lights and overhead lights can illuminate a space, consider ambient and decorative lighting to create the desired ambiance.

• Living wall planters: A living wall planter can add greenery to any décor without taking up floor or table space. Ideal for outdoor structures, these planters also can be used indoors if you safeguard against leaks and dripping. A living wall planter is a framed device that houses plants in a manner that enables them to be vertically mounted to a wall surface. While there are commercially available models, you can create your own design and paint or stain it to match the existing décor. Use a soil-free potting substrate to avoid the mess that regular soil may create. • Combining fish with gardening: Enjoy the best of two relaxing worlds by installing a water feature in your yard. Garden retailers offer ready-made kits that can make fast work of establishing a pond or other water feature in the backyard. Otherwise, there are plenty of water garden companies and installers

• Functional fire pits and places: A blazing fire creates a cozy spot to gather on chilly evenings, but fire pits and fireplaces also can be used as impromptu cooking spots for s’mores or frankfurters on a stick. You can purchase a stand-alone fire pit from any number of retailers or build your own with patio pavers and fire bricks to line the interior of the fire pit. Outdoor fireplaces require more work, and you want to hire a mason to ensure proper installation. • Enjoyable yard additions: While plants and seating may take center stage, some people still want to have fun in their yards. There’s an increased demand for yard designs and décor that can put the fun in backyard living. Bocce courts, ring- or horseshoe-toss setups, as well as bean bag-toss boards, can be incorporated into landscape designs, giving you yet another reason to spend a few hours in the great outdoors, where you can experience a few healthy laughs in the process. Gardening and spending time outdoors are great hobbies and may even boost your mood. Homeowners can explore the popular trends in garden décor and natural elements that they can enjoy inside and outside of their homes.

How To Close Up A Fireplace For The Season

Spring is a great time to prepare fireplaces for seasonal closing.

A professional chimney sweeping also reduces the amount of dirt and odor that will continue to enter a home after the fireplace has been retired for the season. Damp spring weather can moisten soot trapped in a chimney, causing it to smell. Cleaning and deodorizing can help keep rooms fresh. Ask for an inspection Ask a chimney sweep to inspect your chimney in addition to cleaning it. A sweep can look for leaks and cracks, and he or she should also look at the flashing system and rain cap, which can prevent water infiltration. You don’t want

Fireplaces are typically used throughout winter, but when spring rolls around, many homeowners no longer feel the need to light a fire. As fireplace season winds down, homeowners can take the following steps to close their fireplaces for the warm weather seasons ahead.

Hire a chimney sweep A fully functioning fireplace chimney should be swept annually by a certified chimney sweep. He or she will remove soot and any creosote from the inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and can cause considerable damage if it catches fire.

A roaring fireplace on a chilly day provides a welcome, aesthetically appealing respite from the cold.

Begin the cleanup Repeatedly lighting fires results in an accumulation of ash and residual wood debris. Clean out what you can by hand and discard the soot. To conduct a more thorough cleaning, use a high-powered garage vacuum to clear out any remaining ashes from crevices and other parts of the firebox.

to learn your chimney is in poor shape during a heavy spring rainfall. Ask that the pipes, brickwork and damper also be checked for functionality and good repair. Close the damper Homeowners should close the dampers on wood-burning fireplaces when closing their fireplaces for the season. Doing so prevents animals from making nests inside the chimney and possibly gaining entry into your home. Closing the damper also makes the home more efficient by not letting air escape through the chimney. Those with gas fireplaces should leave the damper open at all times to prevent a gas buildup in the home in the case of a gas leak. However, homeowners may want to extinguish the pilot light for a gas fireplace in the spring to reduce energy usage. Make it attractive Some homeowners choose to dress up a fireplace to make it look more appealing in the offseason. Flowers, plants, candles, or decorative accents can be placed in the firebox to add style to a home.

Good Carpeting: It’s Nothing to Sneeze At! By: Kevin Bennett

It’s 2015, and the human race is being threatened by peanuts. That’s right, peanuts. And avocado, and squash, and bananas and apples and pears, oh my! Some blame GMOs— that’s: “Genetically Modified Organisms”. Some point out that mankind has been in decline for generations, and some ignore all of what they call “fear-mongering” and go back to their cheese curls and video games. But if you’ve ever caught an allergy in your mid thirties when before you were healthy as a horse, you understand something’s going on. There are stories of folks who could eat guacamole their whole lives without any trouble, until one day in the middle of their thirties they took an avocado bite and their head swelled up like Oprah before the liposuction. How can we trust what we eat, anymore? With corporations cutting corners and the citizenry asleep, there’s no end to potential allergens. Those of us with allergies know, and so take precautions against possible allergic invasion. One such precaution, believe it or not, can be taken by your choice of flooring. Many of the things that cause an allergic reaction can be attributed to tiny, almost microscopic bits of dust or pollen which circulate throughout a living environment. If you’ve got a hardwood floor, or something of a vinyl nature, there is a vastly increased likelihood that these reaction-causing dust particles could infiltrate your immune system. And while vinyl and hardwood are much easier to keep clean than many conventional carpeting options, your health may necessitate a different flooring choice. Thankfully there’s Carpet Express Direct of Gillette Wyoming. With categories of flooring in every part of the market, they are sure to have the right kind of floor for you. Carpet Express Direct is the closest thing to wholesale in North Eastern Wyoming today. They feature a variety of manufactur-

ers; some who have even taken a critical look at allergies specifically. One such manufacturer of flooring solutions is Bliss Carpeting. Since there is a lot of confusion about just what causes allergies, Bliss Carpeting went to the scientists to get the straight truth. This is what they found: “Studies by the Carpet and Rug Institute (carpet-rug.org) indicate that carpeting actually improves indoor air quality because it works like a giant filter in the home. As gravity acts on allergens – tiny dust particulates, dust mites, pollen, pet dander and the like – they settle onto carpeted areas. These carpet fibers actually trap and hold onto those allergens and prevent them from circulating throughout the room. Carpet works to actively improve the indoor environment.”

Many people don’t consider that one way to combat allergens is flooring choice. But the truth is out there! And living with the misery of allergies is unnecessary. While Carpet Express Direct can’t change your diet or political opinion, they can certainly help your well being in the home—and at the best prices around! It’s 2015, and as far as allergy is concerned, nobody’s got time to pine away in needless pain from an unforeseen reaction. Carpet Express Direct can’t solve all your allergy ills, but they can give you a floor filter that’s pleasing to the eye and comfortable on the feet. Drop by and have a gander at carpeting options from manufacturers across the country! There’s sure to be something to fit your specific lifestyle and health needs.

Decisions To Make Before Adopting A Pet

Pets make great additions to households. Parents often find that bringing a pet into their homes is a great way to instill a sense of responsibility in their children, while singles or couples embrace the companionship that devoted pets provide.

Adoption is the route many prospective pet owners prefer to take when bringing new pets into their homes. Shelter animals are in need of good homes and providing such an environment to animals others have abandoned or were forced to give up can make new pet owners feel better about themselves. But in an effort to make their transitions to pet ownership go more smoothly, men and women should make certain decisions before adding any furry friends to their family dynamic. Responsibility Pets are a big responsibility, but some pets are easier to care for than others. Fish, for example, don’t require as much effort on the part of pet owners as dogs do. Prospective pet owners should discuss how much responsibility they are willing to take on and just who

will be handling the bulk of the caretaking. Prospective pet owners who don’t feel like they can take on much additional responsibility might want to avoid adopting dogs, which need daily walks and exercise, in favor of cats, which don’t require as much attention, or other pets that do not require as significant a time commitment.

Budget Prospective pet owners also should develop a budget before visiting a shelter or speaking to an adoption agency. Pets, even if they are adopted, can be expensive additions to a home, and it’s easy for prospective pet owners to fall in love with an animal and bring it home only to realize down the road that the cost of keeping the animal is beyond their means. When adopting a pet, men and women should expect to pay adoption fees and pay for an initial veterinary visit, which may include vaccinations, the cost of which can quickly add up. In addition to those initial costs, pet owners will need to pay for other items, such as bedding (or cages if adopting a bird), food and toys, and those items are not necessarily one-time costs.

April

Budget also must come into play when deciding which animal to adopt. Certain breeds of dog, for example, are predisposed to certain health conditions that can make caring for them an expensive proposition. Prospective dog owners on limited budgets should avoid adopting breeds whose care will stretch or exceed their budgets in favor of dogs that are unlikely to do so. Lifestyle Prospective pet owners must be willing to change their lifestyles when they adopt a new pet. Some pets won’t require their owners to make many changes at all, while others can dramatically alter the lifestyles their owners may have grown accustomed to. Prospective pet owners should decide how willing they are to change their lifestyles and let that willingness guide their adoption decision. Those who want to change their lifestyle as little as possible may be best suited to pets that need little attention, while those ready and willing to make more significant changes may be ready to bring a dog into their homes. Men and women unsure about the lifestyle changes they will have to make to welcome dogs into their homes may want to consider fostering dogs before they adopt their own. Fostering can give prospective pet owners more accurate ideas of the commitment required to adequately care for a pet as they try to decide if that commitment is one they are capable of making. Adopting pets is a great way for animal lovers to make positive impacts on the lives of animals in need of homes. But prospective adopters should first make certain decisions about pet ownership to ensure their transitions to pet owners go as smoothly as possible.

highly trained medical staff provides free professional care to each patient in a warm, private atmosphere. Unlike other clinics, Women’s Resource Center does not benefit financially from any choice. We treat each patient holistically, with the utmost care and respect.

First Time Patients: Throughout your appointment, it is the goal of each

Women’s Resource Center staff member to provide you with compassionate and confidential medical services. Our Patient Advocates and Medical Professionals are specially trained to serve women facing unplanned pregnancies. If you feel at all overwhelmed due to a pregnancy, we’re here to provide resources and support. You are a unique, valuable individual and we are committed to care for you as such.

Medical Consultation: Your free Medical Consultation will occur during your first visit. Here is what to Expect Step-by-Step: † Meet with your Advocate. † Meet with a Registered Nurse (RN), who will perform a urine pregnancy test, provide you with pregnancy test results, and review your medical history. † Following a positive pregnancy test, a trained medical professional may perform an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. † After your ultrasound exam is complete, your Advocate will provide you with information based on your personal goals. She may schedule a follow-up appointment for you at that time, and will ask you if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Parenting: Health Insurance, medical care, baby items, financial aid, and housing may be available to you should you decide to have your child. During your first appointment, Women’s Resource Center will provide you with a list of resources based on your needs.

The Deer

A man kills a deer and takes it home to cook for dinner. Both he and his wife decide that they won’t tell the kids what kind of meat it is, but will give them a clue and let them guess. The dad said, “Well it’s what Mommy calls me sometimes.” The little girl screamed to her brother, “Don’t eat it. It’s an asshole!

On that same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them; they saw him, but somehow did not recognize him. Jesus said to them, “What are you talking about to each other, as you walk along?” They stood still, with sad faces. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have been happening there these last few days?” “What things?” he asked. “The things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet and was considered by God and by all the people to be powerful in everything he said and did. Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and he was crucified. And we had hoped that he would be the one who was going to set Israel free! Besides all that, this is now the third day since it happened. Some of the women of our group surprised us; they went at dawn to the tomb, but could not find his body. They came back saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. Some of our group went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him.” Then Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then to enter his glory?” And Jesus explained to them what was said about

himself in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets. As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther; but they held him back, saying, “Stay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark.” So he went in to stay with them. He sat down to eat with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. They said to each other, “Wasn’t it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others and saying, “The Lord is risen indeed! He has appeared to Simon!” The two then explained to them what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized the Lord when he broke the bread.
