MONTHLY MAKEUP MAGIC

The Art of Conturing Many women feel that a few wellplaced cosmetic touches can improve their appearances and highlight their best features. There are scores of cosmetics on the market, with entire store aisles devoted to foundations, blushes, shadows, and other cosmetic products. Discovering which brands and products work best for your particular skin type may take some trial and error before producing winning results. But makeup lessons do not end with product selection. Learning the keys to proper application can help women make the most of their cosmetics. Highlighting and contouring, often referred to as “HAC,” has been perfected and used by professional makeup artists for some time. HAC has transformed the faces of many celebrities and is often the technique of choice to add dramatic effect to a woman’s look. The technique employs the use of lighter and darker

shades of makeup to add dimension to the face with the intention of drawing attention to particular areas while downplaying others. With highlighting and contouring, women can even create the illusion of more prominent cheekbones or a smaller nose without having to undergo plastic surgery. Contouring involves adding shadows in certain places to define areas and enhance shapes. Areas that you desire to retreat from the eye for a more sculpted look should be contoured. Contouring can be done by using a concealer crayon that is a few shades darker than your natural skin color, a bronzer or a deep shade of blusher. Women also can purchase contouring kits to make the job that much easier. Highlighting adds light to the face in key areas to make them more prominent. Highlighters may be sold as stand-alone products, or you can use a light concealer to achieve similar results. Depending on the shape of your face or your goal, contouring and high-

lighting shades will be placed in select areas. In many instances, darker hues are placed around the hairline, as well as in the crease of the cheeks that forms when you suck in your cheeks. Contouring also is added from the inside corners of the eyebrows down the sides of the nose. Bronzer applied under the chin and down the neck can make your neck appear elongated and thinner. Highlights typically are applied in the center of the forehead and down the front of the nose. Lighter hues can be used above the eyebrows and underneath the outer corners of the brows to define their shape. Apply a highlighter underneath the eyes stretching over the tops of the cheeks. Some women like to highlight the bow of the lips and the front of the chin. Contouring and highlighting should take place after you have used concealer and your base foundation. This allows you to blend the shades together so there aren’t any distinct lines in color. Use a blush color at the back of the apples of the cheeks to finish the look. Then feel free to play up your eyes and lips with desired shades.

How To Choose New Appliances

As the weather turns cooler, outdoor improvements become less practical. Homeowners’ thoughts may turn to projects they can tackle inside of the home. Now may be the time to consider the purchase of new appliances that can be the finishing touches to renovated spaces.

Fall is prime time to purchase new large appliances. Manufacturers typically unveil their latest models during September and October. At this point, prices on older models will be reduced to make room for new ones. By the end of the year, any older models that have not yet been cleared out will be discounted further. Even though the end-of-the year deals will be better, the selection may be limited the longer you wait. It is best never to wait until an appliance is on its last leg for repair or replacement. Then consumers do not have the luxury to price shop nor find items that include the features they desire most. Here are some other buying tips. Research Shoppers should begin their research at home before they even enter a store. Make a list of features you want in the appliance, which helps narrow down the playing field and better focus your purchasing decisions. Once you have a list handy, speak with

friends or family members about their experiences with brands and/or retailers. Ask about which features they like the most and how often they have had to call for repairs. If they could do things differently, what would those things be? Know your space Perhaps you are familiar with the adage to measure twice and cut once. The same can be said for measuring prior to purchasing an appliance. Be sure you know the exact measurements of the space that will house the new appliance. Take into consideration the clearance needed to open doors, such as with a refrigerator or front-loading washing machine. It can be a waste of time and money to have an appliance delivered only to find it doesn’t fit at the time of installation. Energy savings Consider appliances that reduce energy usage. Energy

August

Star® appliances are produced in adherence to international standards for energy efficiency. The program was started more than 20 years ago by the EPA and the Department of Energy. Since then, other countries have adopted the program. Appliances that feature the Energy Star® logo use 20 to 30 percent less energy than required by typical federal standards. Homeowners who purchase qualifying appliances may be eligible for tax breaks and other incentives. Consider your lifestyle It is easy to be overwhelmed and awestruck by the number of appliances available. You may desire the biggest and best there is, but if you are not a superstar in the kitchen, you may not need the commercial stove. A bachelor may not require an oversized washing machine. Do your research and comparison shop so you won’t have any regrets later on.

Once the initial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite subjects and participate in extracurricular activities.

Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. Fortunately, there are several ways parents can do just that. • Be patient. Shopping early can save shoppers money in

many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of supplies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won’t need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might email lists to parents before back to school season hits full swing.

• Take inventory. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward, encourage kids to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year ’s inventory that much easier to examine and assess.

August

• Spend more now to save later. While inexpensive supplies can be hard to resist, such items likely won’t withstand the test of time, forcing you to spend time and money each year buying replacement supplies. Paying more now for certain items, including stronger backpacks and more highly rated calculators, may end up saving you money in the long run, even if the initial pill is somewhat tough to swallow. • Use technology to your advantage. Department stores and businesses that sell school supplies, such as pharmacies and office stores, may or may not discount too many items once back to school season hits full swing. But savvy parents can still find deals by using technology to their advantage when shopping for school supplies. Download apps like RetailMeNot to your smartphone and enable its updates so your phone essentially notifies you of any discounts the moment you walk into a given store. If you don’t receive any updates, search for discounts via the app or the Internet as you shop. Chances are strong that there are deals to be had, even if you don’t learn of the deals until you arrive at the store. School supplies can be expensive, but parents can employ several strategies to save on school supplies now and in the future.

Fences can provide privacy and transform backyards into calming places to relax and unwind. But fences also may lead to disputes with neighbors if installation is not carried out with etiquette. Always place the fence within your property lines, which can be determined by examining a land survey for your home. Inform your neighbors of your intention to erect a fence, and give any concerns they might have substantial consideration. Face the more aesthetically appealing side of the fence outward to the street and to neighbors’ yards. In addition, maintain the fence once it is installed so it does not become a neighborhood eyesore that irks your neighbors.

TO RENT? OR NOT TO RENT?

August

That’s a good question...

for you, you may soon discover that hiring a handyman or discounting rent for live-in supers is cutting into your profits or making it difficult to pay bills. Before deciding to rent out your home, determine the potential costs of maintaining a second property and use that information to decide if renting the property is a sound financial investment or one that might put you in the red. Tenants Many people who have rented have a horror story or two about an absentee or indifferent landlord, but landlords also have their own such stories about nightmare tenants. When mulling whether or not to rent out your home, consider who your prospective tenants will be and if your community will supply the steady stream of renters you will need to pay your mortgage and bills without jeopardizing your finances. The last things first-time or even experienced landlords want are tenants who cannot pay their rent and/or those who are disrespectful of their neighbors and their landlords, so it’s best to give ample consideration to your potential pool of renters before deciding to rent out your home.

Renting out a home is a great way for homeowners to earn some extra income. Some homeowners rent their homes in an attempt to wait out a sagging housing market, while others see renting their homes as a long-term commitment to their financial futures. Being a landlord has its advantages and disadvantages, and the decision to rent out a home is one that homeowners should not take lightly. The following are a handful of factors homeowners should consider as they try to decide if renting out their homes is the right move for them. Time Being a landlord is a 24/7/365 commitment, as tenants will expect their land-

lords to be on call at all times. Tenants will call their landlords should plumbing fixtures suddenly burst in the middle of the night, and landlords must be available to answer such calls no matter how inconvenient they become. If you are not willing or able to devote the time necessary to tend to tenant needs, then being a landlord may not be for you. Maintenance Whereas homeowners may be able to delay making certain repairs in the homes where they lay their heads, such a luxury is not afforded when they are renting out their other properties. Repairs and maintenance of rental properties cannot be put on the back burner while you save money to fix them. In addition, if even minor repairs typically pose a problem

Help Many landlords work with local real estate agencies or property management firms who will do much of the legwork with regard to finding tenants and maintaining properties. Research the cost of such help to determine if you can afford it and still make renting your home financially viable. Attorney fees are another cost prospective landlords must consider. Landlordtenant laws can be difficult to decipher for first-time landlords, so it helps to have an attorney who can help you decipher these laws and how they should govern your actions as a landlord. But attorneys are not inexpensive, and they must be worked into your budget as well. Renting a home is a great way to earn extra income, but homeowners must consider a host of factors before putting their homes up for rent.

The Physics of Flooring

Page 19

By: Kevin Bennett Bill meant well, but he didn’t do his homework. Trying to save a few dollars he installed his own hardwood flooring, and when he was done and it had been properly sanded, stained, and polished, it looked just great! Except he didn’t prep the sub-floor correctly, and later learned that it was “floating”, which meant it was so insecure you could step on a board across the room and spill your wife’s coffee at the kitchen table. Which wasn’t funny, except when the kids did it; and then it was only funny when she wasn’t watching. Bill Jr. once managed to hit a board just right and knock his sister’s Fruity Puffs onto the cat as it sauntered by, converting that feline into a milk-sopped wall-seeking missile. While everybody got a good laugh, the cat was not impressed; and neither was the missus. Bill Sr. hadn’t even finished chuckling when the frying pan came out. Luckily his periphery was precise and he managed to duck in time. Didn’t do the wall any good, but at least he avoided a headache. The economy is a bust right now, which gets people loopy with home renovation projects. Everyone is trying to flip a house or renovate their home, and in the main this is a good trend; the problem is, with a lack of professional support, sometimes folks just don’t know what they’re doing. While there is a unique charm and flavor to home renovations done by the homeowner, certain aspects of home renovation should really be left to the professionals. A great example is flooring. When flooring a house, there are a number of different options available, and a number of different ways to skin that cat—especially if it’s been leaving treats outside the litter box for you. For example, you could throw a shag carpet down, or a microfiber carpet designed for regular use, there could be some tile involved, or hardwood, or linoleum, or laminate—

shoot, if the wife will let you, you could just fill the whole kitchen with cement, smooth it out, paint the sucker and toss a throw-rug over the whole thing. But we’re not in Soviet Russia, and Spartan furnishings just aren’t en vogue—though the way the economy is going, who knows? All those options are viable and possible, and could be completed solo, without the help of professionals. But if you forget, per se, to prep the sub floor on a hardwood installation correctly, like Bill did, or chose the wrong underlayerment, then the floor will face structural integrity problems and begin coming apart on you. And then you’ll have no choice but to go to the professionals and deal with a smug wife for a couple months. Surely intolerable.

So Bill bit the bullet and called Carpet Express Direct of Gillette. With a wide selection of flooring options, from laminate to tile, shag carpet, rubber, and just about anything in between, it was easy for Bill to find the right kind of flooring for his house. They fixed his shenanigans in the kitchen, and though the cat was safer and the wife was happier, little Bill Jr. was a little sad he couldn’t juke the cereal bowl onto the feline anymore. But he got to watch the installers take their time doing a professional job on a new floor, and that was almost as good. With regular deals on Sheet Vinyl and other flooring options, like Bonnie Plank at $3.99/sq. ft., or New Mexico White Sand LVP at $1.99/sq. ft., there’s something to fit any customer at Carpet Express Direct of Gillette.

Unexplored Extracurricular Activities

Page 20

Sports may be the first thing that comes to mind when many parents think of extracurricular activities for their children, but not all kids are cut out for or interested in competitive athletics. But just because a youngster may not be the next star quarterback or captain of the soccer team does not mean he or she can’t find an extracurricular activity to be passionate about. Parents know that schoolwork comes first, but extracurricular activities can be important to a child’s development, serving as an avenue to meet new people and an opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork. The following are a handful of things parents should consider when trying to help their children find the right extracurricular activities. Interests One of the easiest ways to help kids find an extracurricular activity they can be passionate about is to discuss their interests with

HouseHunterWY.com

them. Youngsters with a love of animals might enjoy volunteering at a local animal shelter or hospital, while those who love to write may find writing for the school newspaper is a great way to apply that passion in a practical setting. Even kids with a passion for video games might be interested in learning about computer graphics and what it takes to design games. When trying to find extracurricular activities for your children, resist the urge to write off any of their interests. Instead, use those interests as jumping off points to further engage their passions. Availability Parents know that school comes before extracurricular activities, but kids may not be so wise. Keep in mind kids’ existing workloads when helping them find the right afterschool activities. Many organizations are especially flexible with teenage volunteers or employees, but parents still must keep a watchful eye to ensure kids do not overextend

August

themselves. Kids who overcommit to extracurricular activities may end up feeling burnt out, which can have a negative impact on their schoolwork. Encourage kids to find activities they care about, but emphasize that these activities should not become bigger priorities than schoolwork. Let kids know that they can get more involved during summer vacation, but make sure kids don’t devote too much of their time to afterschool activities during the school year. A couple of hours per week and even some additional time on the weekends should not distract kids from their responsibilities at school, and that’s still ample time for kids to explore their interests. Internships Internships were once exclusive to college students, but many organizations now offer internship opportunities to high schoolers as well. Kids who find themselves interested in particular subjects at school, whether it’s graphic design or a beginner’s course on finance, may be eligible for internships with local companies. Such opportunities may even encourage kids to pursue a particular course of study once they enter college. Extracurricular activities can help youngsters develop into well-rounded adults. Parents can help kids find the right activities while still encouraging them to keep schoolwork atop their priority lists.

TRANSITIONING TO COLLEGE: How You Can Make It Easier

August

If they don’t have accounts already, open bank accounts in your youngster’s name, and insist that he or she start paying for his or her expenses via these accounts. Resist the urge to give high school kids gas money or money for shopping trips if they have already spent their allowances so they can learn how to effectively manage money between paydays. In addition, teach kids about the right and wrong ways to use credit cards, including the importance of paying balances in full and on time.

College is the first taste of true independence many young students experience. Whereas mom and dad were always around to make sure kids were out the door on time and homework was done, that safety blanket is no longer there once kids move into their dorm rooms. The transition to college life can be exciting. But while students typically welcome that transition with open arms, parents often worry about how their children will handle their suddenly more independent life. Parents who want to help their kids make as smooth a transition to college life as possible can take steps during their children’s senior year of high school to help them adjust to their new surroundings and responsibilities more easily. • Let kids fly solo on school day mornings. New college students have to make many adjustments

upon moving into their dorms, and getting themselves out of bed each morning and off to class on time is one such change. Parents worried that their students will sleep in when mom and dad isn’t around to remind them to wake up can start letting kids fly solo on school day mornings during their final year of high school. Let kids set their alarms, prepare their own breakfasts and get out the door on time all on their own. By the time their freshman year of college arrives, kids will know how to handle their mornings by themselves. • Teach kids how to develop budgets. Another problem many firstyear college students encounter is an inability to effectively manage their money. Whether you plan to give kids an allowance while they are in school or intend for them to work part-time for their spending money, use senior year of high school as an opportunity to show kids how to budget their money.

• Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food. • Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping. The transition from high school to college can be both exciting and difficult. But parents can get a head start on that transition by encouraging their youngsters to be more independent during their final year of high school.

SCHOOL MORNINGS:

FOUR TIPS TO HELP SLEEPY MOMS

School day mornings can be hectic, as getting kids ready for school and out the door on time is not always easy. Working parents may find school day mornings especially difficult, as their own work schedules can make mornings feel even more rushed. Fortunately, parents can employ several strategies to free up time in the morning so everyone starts their days off in a more relaxing atmosphere. • Wake up earlier. Sleep might seem like a precious commodity, but waking up just 10 to 15 minutes earlier can remove some of the stress from weekday mornings without costing you a lot of sack time. Let kids sleep in until their normal wakeup time, using your extra 10 or 15 minutes to shower or enjoy your morning cup of coffee before the house is abuzz with activity.

• Tackle certain chores the night before. Delaying certain chores until you wake up makes for a hectic morning, so tackle as many morning chores as possible before you go to bed for the night. Prepare school lunches, lay clothes out for yourself and your children, and make sure kids have their backpacks packed and ready to go before they go to bed. Each of these things may only take a few minutes, but when left for the morning, they can add up to a substantial amount of time.

• Encourage youngsters to pick up the pace. Some people are morning people, while others dread setting their alarms for early morning hours. Kids who fall into the latter group may drag their feet in the morning, but parents should offer encouragement when kids are moving slowly in the morning. Allowing your frustration to show may only make kids less fond of mornings, so remind them as nicely as possible that everyone has a schedule to stick to if they seem to be dragging their feet. • Keep the television off. If watching the television is ingrained in your morning routine, try going a few days without it to see if this makes it easier to get out the door on time. Kids might grow distracted by morning cartoons, and even adults may get caught up in morning news shows or other forecasts. Eliminating television from your morning routine can save time and also may help your family grow closer, as you will have more distraction-free time to speak to one another. In addition to turning off the television, resist the urge to turn on your devices or scan work emails when getting ready in the morning. Parents know that school day mornings can be hectic. But there are several ways to make such mornings go more smoothly so everyone gets where they need to be on time.

Jordan’s Fine Dining

Page 35

by Kevin Bennett

Many people remember their first experience with seafood, and just how amazing it was. Lobster, Crab, Shrimp and Salmon. Grammatically there’s no need to capitalize those words, but they’ve been capitalized because in Gillette it’s really hard to get those kinds of exotic foods. But Jordan’s is changing that; and not only are they offering seafood, but they’re offering unique seafood. Have you ever had a Lobster Corndog? Jordan’s Western Dining is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Gillette Wyoming is rapidly growing more sophisticated and diversifying almost daily. One of the newer restaurants is Jordan’s, which has been serving Gillette innovatively for the last two years. Says the restaurant’s namesake Jordan, “We have a new lunch menu, and we’re guaranteeing order-to-delivery time is 15 minutes or less, otherwise we buy lunch.” Jordan went on to express that steaks and burgers aren’t included in that time frame because some customers may prefer they be cooked longer. This is a good idea with red meats, but for safety reasons the cook time is usually a little over fifteen minutes. However there are many specials at Jordan’s. You may ask: What could be better than Happy Hour? Well how about Three Happy Hours? Every day? From three to six PM, Jordan’s features half-priced domestic draft beers, house wines and well drinks. Now one of the really neat things Jordan’s does is offer quality seafood at bargain prices. It’s hard to get good seafood in the Midwest because of our lack of proximity to any massive sea. The only way to get it is through

flight. So every Saturday night, a flight comes into Jordan’s with Maine Lobster straight from the coast. And you can practically steal it for $24.97. It comes with corn on the cob and two baked potatoes, but if you wanted to add in a lobster corndog too, there’s really no reason not to is there? Furthermore Jordan’s actually offers reservation of their space for special events, including private concerts and corporate functions. Contact them for the finer details. Having previously worked catering events at the White House in Washington D.C., Jordan is an expert event coordinator, and a wizard in the culinary department. What dishes and what styles are both unique and sought after are areas of expertise which she brings to the Jordan dining experience. Uniqueness doesn’t come randomly. For atmosphere it’s difficult to beat Jordan’s. If you get a chance, take a walk through and look at the many different cultural accouterments of the Wyoming area. From stuffed Bison busts to pictures of Gillettians from a hundred years ago, it’s really a must to take the time for a short perusal of the artistry at Jordan’s. Good food and great specials are only one component of a fine dining experi-

ence. Along with these things you’re going to want an atmosphere that’s conducive to digestion, and in some way matches the culinary offerings. Jordan’s fine dining is further individual in that it offers many expressive and usually unattainable (in Gillette) dishes at reasonable prices, but it also caters to the social ethic of the city. A great example of this is their historic log cabin saloon bar. What a place to take your special someone to for some together time! It’s also a great place for family outings, celebrations and other special events. And if you just need a bite to eat on your lunch break, you can zip over to Jordan’s and eat well both expediently and at a reasonable price. Why not cross ’59 and grab a lobster corndog? With some of the most unique and satisfying dishes in Gillette, excellent atmosphere, bottom dollar seafood deals, top dollar atmosphere, twentyone weekly happy hours, and service hailing from experience at our country’s nerve center, it’s easy to see why Jordan’s is a popular option in Gillette. It deserves to be! Couple to this hand-picked, personable staff and a location that’s easy to find right in the middle of town, and you’ve got yourself a regular destination. Fine dining in Gillette is more than discounts, service, excellent food, and atmosphere. By supporting these kinds of establishments, the city itself benefits socially and economically. And so do you. Have a relaxed fine dining experience in probably the hottest new restaurant Gillette has to offer right now. Save money on exotic foods, and learn a little about the city’s culture while you’re at it

Test Taking Tips

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, test anxiety is a form of performance anxiety that can affect even the most prepared students. The ADAA notes that several factors, including fear of failure and a poor test history, can contribute to test anxiety, the presence of which can make it difficult for students to concentrate and may even cause physical symptoms like headache and nausea. Parents of students who are anxious about upcoming tests can share the following test-taking tips with their children, courtesy of the ADAA. • Prioritize preparation. Test preparation should begin well in advance of the test, as cramming the night before may make students feel unprepared and less confident in their knowledge of the material. In addition, studying at least a week or two in advance of the test date affords students the opportunity to take practice tests in conditions similar to those in real testing situations. That familiarity can calm any nerves they may typically experience when taking exams. • Develop an effective test-taking strategy. The ADAA recommends students answer

the questions they know first before returning to more difficult questions. Doing so may contribute to students’ confidence and calm their nerves as they approach the rest of the test. When tests include essay portions, students can outline their essays before they begin to write so they have a clearer idea of what they want to say and how they want to say it. • Employ relaxation techniques. Deep, slow breaths and systematic relaxation of muscles can energize students’ bodies and make it easier for them to focus. Students can apply such techniques before exams to curb any pre-test jitters they might have and, if necessary, revisit these relaxation exercises during the test if feelings of nervousness return. • Get enough sleep and eat healthy before the exam. Stress and anxiety are more difficult to cope with when the body is tired, so parents should encourage their children to get adequate sleep the night before an exam. In addition, provide healthy foods for kids to eat prior to the exam so they are not lethargic or hungry once the test begins. • Don’t be afraid to seek help. Plenty of

students experience test anxiety, and many schools offer programs designed to help students overcome their test-taking fears. Making use of these programs is a great way for kids to improve their testing performance.

The Problem With Hard Water

Home ownership opens people’s eyes to many new experiences, even requiring homeowners to familiarize themselves with certain things they never encountered as renters. Homeowners become novice plumbers, electricians, horticulturists, and even chemists as they wade through the projects and repairs involved with owning a home.

Outside of high school chemistry class, you may never have given thought to water composition and how it changes. However, once you become a homeowner, you may have to pay special attention to the type of water bubbling out of your faucets. Hard water is a common concern, and it can affect appliances and other parts of the home.

What is hard water?

Hard water affects about 85 percent of the United States, according to the Water Quality Association. Although not harmful to human health, hard water can impact one’s daily life in other ways. Hard water is formed when water moves through soil and rock. It dissolves very small amounts of minerals and holds them in a solution. Calcium and magnesium are the most common minerals to turn water “hard.” The more magnesium and calcium water dissolves, the harder it becomes. From nuisance to damaging Hard water can not only be a minor headache, but also something more serious.

Hard water can interfere with various cleaning tasks and also personal grooming. Clothes washed in hard water may not be fully clean and may appear dingy. Hard water can cause a film on surfaces, such as bath tiles and tubs. Some people find that their hair and skin can appear dull and sticky due to hard water.

Hard water can have other effects, too. Over time, the water can deposit minerals on the inside of pipes, reducing water flow. If these deposits grow thick, you may have a plumbing issue on your hands. Furthermore, mineral deposits can harm appliances, such as water heaters, washing machines and dishwashers. Eventually, hard water may render these appliances ineffective, and they will need to be replaced.

Treatment options

Considering hard water is such a common concern, a number of treatment options exist. The main types of water-softening systems use either a packaged water softener or a mechanical watersoftening unit. Packaged water softeners are chemicals that bond with the calcium and magnesium ions in the water so that they cannot interfere with cleaning efficiency. These chemicals fall into two categories: precipitating and nonprecipitating. Precipitating softeners are borax and washing soda and can affect pH levels of water and make water

cloudy. Nonprecipitating softeners use phosphates. Alkalinity won’t be increased, and usually there is no cloudiness or buildup. These products are typically added to laundry loads and the like and are not recommended for drinking water. Mechanical water-softening systems are hooked up directly to the plumbing of the house. They are ion-exchange systems that will add salt to the water. Although it can be safe to drink, softened water may not be recommended for those who are on low-sodium diets. Hard water is a problem many homeowners have to face. It can affect a home’s appliances’ performance and cleaning abilities. Water hardness can be managed, and it is best to consult with an expert water-softening system manufacturer about your options.

In addition, check with local contractors to see if they will offer discounts late in the season. Tree-removal companies, landscapers, fence installers, masons, and others may cut prices in mid- to late-autumn as they look to earn a bit more money before the arrival of winter.

Snow removal Retailers looking to move snow blowers, shovels and other winter accessories may offer teaser deals to attract customers. It’s best to purchase such tools now before the first big storm drives up demand. Cooking appliances Manufacturers typically introduce new stoves, cooktops and other cooking supplies in advance of the holiday season. Older models may be discounted to make room for the new arrivals, and you may be able to score even bigger savings on floor models. If renovating the kitchen is in the works, wait until early autumn to start appliance shopping. Painting supplies The weekends surrounding Labor Day and Columbus Day are also great times to find deals on home improvement, as retailers know customers have extra time to complete projects during these long weekends. Paint, rollers and other supplies may be discounted on such weekends, and you also may find discounts on power tools. Vehicles If you are in the market for a new SUV or

truck to transport your home improvement project supplies, autumn is a good time to visit a dealership. Many dealerships liquidate their inventory in autumn to free up space for new model releases about to hit the market. Come autumn, you may find it easier to negotiate financing and leasing deals. Homeowners can save on home improvement projects and other needs by taking advantage of late-summer, early-autumn discounts.

Factors To Consider When Planning A Home Office

August

fice, look for lighting sources that replicate daylight so you are not working in dark quarters. Speak with your physician about how to arrange lighting to reduce eyestrain caused by staring at a computer.

Connectivity

As technology has made working remotely easier, more and more professionals are working from home. Working from home can help working parents save money on childcare costs and help all workers avoid rush hour traffic jams and the costs of commuting to and from the office. The right working environment is essential for men and women who work from home. An environment that’s conducive to work can help people increase their productivity and make their employers more likely to allow more employees to work from home. Professionals who are new to working from home may find it takes some time before they can create the perfect working environment, but the following are a few factors to consider when planning a home office.

Space

One of the disadvantages to working from home is that remote workers don’t have access to the same level of

equipment as in the main office, such as color copiers or scanners. If you want to include even scaled-down versions of such equipment in your office, you will need ample space. In addition, less spacious home offices can feel too tight and enclosed, making workers uncomfortable and less enthusiastic about working every day. Pick a spot in your home that affords room for your equipment and the ability to move around so you don’t feel cramped throughout the workday.

Lighting

Lighting is another factor remote workers must consider when they’re planning their home offices. Natural light can provide an energetic boost and improve your mood, so choose a room in your home that gets lots of sunlight during the day. Many professionals who work remotely do so from the basements of their homes, which can make it difficult to rely on natural light. If the basement is the only location in your home that can fit a home of-

Connectivity also must be considered when planning a home office. While wireless Internet has made Internet dead zones less problematic, certain areas or rooms in your home may still be touch-and-go with regard to Internet connectivity. Such areas should be avoided when choosing a room for your home office, as it can be difficult to remain productive if your connection to your office’s external server is routinely compromised. Find an area where the wireless connection is always strong.

Distractions

While your home might be empty for much of the day, you don’t want to be distracted when the kids come home from school or when your spouse or roommate arrives home from work. Avoid putting your home office too close to popular hangout areas in your home, such as the kitchen and the living room. Instead, choose a room where you have lots of privacy so you can focus on your work and won’t be routinely interrupted. Working from home can pay numerous dividends, but professionals who telework must put careful thought into the rooms or areas of their homes where they plan to work.

Adults In College

Adults return to school for a variety of reasons. Some might be spurred by a desire to pursue a new career, while others might go back to school to learn more about their existing field and improve their career prospects. While their reasons for returning to school may differ, many adults find themselves battling some nerves as they begin the process of going back to the classroom. Feelings of doubt are common among adults returning to school. But there are steps all adult students can take to reduce their anxiety and make the most of the often exciting experience of going back to school. • Start slow. Unlike more traditional college students, adults returning to school tend to have significant responsibilities, including families and careers. Juggling work and family is difficult on its own, but doing so along with college coursework is even harder. Adult students returning to school after a long layoff would be wise to take things slowly at first so they and their families can gradually adjust to their new schedules. Many schools now offer online courses, which can be especially beneficial for working professionals.

• Have a plan. Many adults only return to school when they know exactly what they want to study or which courses they need to take to complete a degree or earn a certificate. If you have not already mapped out such a plan, do so before enrolling in any classes. The cost of a college education has no doubt increased considerably since you last stepped foot on campus, so you don’t want to be signing up for costly classes that will not help you accomplish

what you hope to accomplish by returning to school.

• Research your options. Just because you are an adult returning to school does not mean you are ineligible for scholarships or other forms of financial aid. The United States Department of Labor maintains a scholarship search engine at www.careerinfonet.org where students of all ages and academic levels can search for scholarships, grants and other financial aid opportunities to determine if they are eligible for some help paying for tuition. In addition, adults returning to school may want to discuss their plans with their employers, especially if they are looking to continue working in their current fields. Employers may have programs in place to subsidize employees looking to

continue their education.

• Don’t be discouraged. Many adults mulling a return to school are hesitant to do so because they feel as if they will be the only older students in classrooms filled with millennials. However, the National Center for Education Statistics predicts a 14 percent increase in enrollment of students 25 and older between 2011 and 2021, suggesting that adults going back to school are unlikely to be the only graybeards in their classrooms. Returning to college as an adult can be both exciting and overwhelming. But adults need not be nervous about returning to the classroom, even if it has been quite some time since they last stepped on a college campus.

Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Never praise yourself. Let others do it. A stone is heavy, and sand is hard to carry, but the irritation caused by a fool is much harder to bear. Anger is cruel and can destroy like a flood, but jealousy is much worse. Open criticism is better than hidden love. You can trust what your friend says, even when it hurts. But your enemies want to hurt you, even when they act nice. When you are full, you will not even eat honey. When you are hungry, even something bitter tastes sweet. A man away from home is like a bird away from its nest. Perfume and incense make you feel good, and so does good advice from a friend. Don’t forget your own friends or your father’s friends. If you have a problem, go to your neighbor for help. It is better to ask a neighbor who is near than a brother who is far away. My son, be wise. This will make me happy. Then I will be able to answer those who criticize me. Wise people see trouble coming and get out of its way, but fools go straight to the trouble and suffer for it. Proverbs 27:1 - 27:12 Easy - to - Read Version
