Find Time To Travel In The Year Ahead HouseHunterWY.com
Travel is something many people love but few have the time to do. While some people avoid travel because it can be costly, many more admit they would travel more if they simply had the time. So how can you make travel a bigger part of your life in the year ahead? Consider the following tips.
• Use your vacation days. Many people don’t travel because they simply aren’t using their paid time off. A Harris Interactive survey conducted for the career website Glassdoor found that only 51 percent of American employees use all of their eligible paid time off and vacation time. Some of those workers may be hesitant to take days off for fear of upsetting their superiors, but another survey suggests that might be a mistake. A 2015 study from the staffing firm The Creative Group found that 40 percent of executives feel their employees would be more productive if they used their allotted vacation time. • Hit the road and work at the same time. If things at work are simply too hectic, consider hitting the road and working at

the same time. While unencumbered travel tends to be the most relaxing, working vacations can allow you to let off some steam and get your work done outside the hustle and bustle of the office. Resolve to work only a few hours each day, tackling a few projects in the early morning before you call it quits and enjoy your destination. The ease of working remotely can make it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office while still getting time to travel.
• Make better use of weekends. Travel need not be limited to vacations. If you truly love to get up and go, plan more weekend trips. Find places within a few hours of your home so you spend less time behind the wheel and more time enjoying your destination. Plan ahead for threeday weekends so you don’t have to scramble at the last minute to make arrangements.

add an extra day at the end of the trip so you can explore a new locale without the burden of having to work. This can be a cost-effective way to travel, as your company will no doubt still pay to fly you home even if you stay an extra day to do some sightseeing. Finding time to travel is not as hard as many working professionals may think. Oftentimes all it takes is a little extra effort and the willingness to leave the office behind for a few days.
• Extend work trips. Another way to see new places is to extend work trips. If you have a business trip coming up,

Embrace The Wonders Of Wireless At Home
Electronic devices enable us to access information, communicate and engage in entertainment. Consumer electronics also have transformed the typical household. Data from the Consumer Electronics Association, CTIA and U.S. Census Bureau paint a picture of just how immersed in new technology society has become. Statistics indicate the typical home of 2.6 people has an average of 24 electronic gadgets in use, including one or more smartphones. These devices include eReaders, HDTVs, laptops, tablets, printers, digital cameras, DVRs, Bluetooth speakers, portable GPS devices, and more. To meet the demands of all of these devices, some homes need an electronics overhaul, including beefing up the capabilities of Internet connections and wireless networks. Many Wi-Fi routers claim to be capable of supporting as many as 255 connected devices. While this is theoretically possible, having that many devices on a standard home wireless router can compromise how well a network works. The results may include slow Internet browsing abilities, long lag time and even connection interference or droppage. When considering renovation projects around the home, it may be worth it to pay attention to electronic devices and their connectivity. Start with the router The wireless router in your home is a technological work-
horse. When the router goes down, your devices follow suit. Without a router you will not be able to access the digital signal from your Internet Service Provider and send it out to all of your devices. Many older routers broadcast on a 2.4GHz signal, the same as many other radio devices. Crowding on the 2.4GHz spectrum could cause slowdown during the busiest times of the day for Internet traffic. It may be worth it to invest in a new router that can search for other channels that have less traffic and broadcast through them.
Test your speed Relatively inexpensive software can show you your Internet speed numbers to see if your connection is meeting the speeds promised by your ISP. If your speed is slow when tested at various times in a given day, you may want to upgrade your service package to a faster service plan. If the speed is adequate, you can invest in some other options. Get new hardware Routers should be placed in a
Page 5
central location so that the signal can be accessed throughout the house. But router placement may depend on where your cable or fiber optic lines enter the home. If router signal interference seems suspect in slower connections, hardware, such as a greater-range antenna, wireless access points, and wireless repeaters can help expand your router signal throughout the house. Speak with a wireless network expert about the options that may be best for your home. Another consideration is a Wi-Fi plug that uses existing electrical circuits in a home to expand the signals offered by the router. Expand your gadget list Once a wireless signal is verified and confirmed as adequate, you may be interested in additional devices that can tap into the wireless network and make your home run more efficiently. Manufacturers now offer everything from wireless door locks that can be controlled with a smartphone to wireless flash memory cards that can easily transfer photos from a camera to computer to wireless lighting control throughout the entire house. With wireless speakers, you can instantly beam music to any number of units in a home or use a NAS (network attached storage) drive as a backup for photos, videos and other large files. Technology is changing the way people utilize their homes. Making sure a wireless network is up to par can make using devices easier and more efficient.

Spring Cleaning Projects You Don’t Want To Forget
Spring cleaning is an annual tradition in many households. After a winter spent cooped up indoors, spring cleaning can rejuvenate a household and provide a great chance to rid a home of a season’s worth of clutter. Donating old clothes and cleaning out the garage are popular spring cleaning projects, but there are a host of additional tasks homeowners can tackle to freshen up their homes this spring.
Floors
Simply vacuuming or sweeping the floors might not be enough to banish some of winter ’s most uninvited guests. Dust has a way of settling into a home over the course of a typical winter, and it’s easy for a home’s inhabitants to track dirt and debris inside as well. After vacuuming or sweeping floors, go over them with a mop. Doing so can remove any lingering dust, dirt, debris, and allergens the vacuum or broom failed to pick up. Apply wood cleaner and polish to wood floors to make them look even cleaner.
Baseboards
Though baseboards might not seem all that dirty, upon closer inspection homeowners might notice substantial accumulations of dirt and dust. Such dirt and dust many not be removed so easily, so homeowners might need to use hot water and a sponge to remove any debris that is clinging.
Curtains
Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the winter. This might be more visible near the end of winter when more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open windows for the season so any wind that blows in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been washed, opening windows may help them dry more quickly.
Bathrooms
Bathrooms also tend to bear the brunt of winter weather, as mold and grime can accumulate throughout a season in which it’s too cold to open bathroom windows to let fresh air in after bathing. Inspect ceilings, tubs, shower stalls, and floors for any signs of mold growth or grime. Mold growth in a home can lead to respiratory problems and exacerbate existing conditions such as asthma,
so it’s best to inspect bathrooms for any signs of mold growth throughout winter. If you have let that slip, prioritize such inspections come spring cleaning time.
Furniture
It’s easy to overlook furniture when tackling spring cleaning, but dust and dirt can quickly accumulate on couches and chairs over the course of winter. When possible, vacuum furniture to remove any debris that might have accumulated while windows and doors were kept shut, and shampoo any cushions or seat covers that don’t pass the smell test. Spring cleaning encompasses a host of tasks, and homeowners who want a truly clean house should not overlook smaller tasks that can produce big results.

The Evolution Of Black History Month HouseHunterWY.com
Black History Month, sometimes referred to as African American History Month, is a federally recognized month-long commemoration of the achievements of African Americans and the roles they have played in shaping United States history. Each February, Americans recognize notable African American individuals. Canada and the United Kingdom also observe Black History Month, with the UK celebrating in October rather than February. Many deserving people are recognized during Black History Month, which no doubt serves to inspire African Americans and others who appreciate the role African Americans have played and continue to play.
One of the lesser known yet highly influential individuals to play a key role in the development of Black History Month was Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Woodson was a son of former slaves who spent his childhood working in coal mines and quarries. Self-taught in English and arithmetic, Woodson attended high school and completed the curriculum in two years. He even-

Woodson was disheartened that textbooks and American history largely ignored the achievements of Black Americans. Therefore, he began the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and founded a complementary journal. According to The Freeman Institute Foundation, Woodson decided to launch a Negro History Week in 1926. He picked the second week of February to have the recognition fall between the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, two pioneers of racial equality.
recognized by the U.S. government. Black History Month has grown considerably since Woodson first launched Negro History Week nearly a century ago. His words about why he felt African American history was so important still resonate today: “What we need is not a history of selected races of nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice.”
Although the first Negro History Week met with mild responses, eventually the yearly tradition caught on and its popularity grew. It wasn’t until 1969, however, that Negro History Week transformed into Black History Month, after a proposition by the leaders of the Black United Students at Kent State University. In 1976, 26 years after Woodson’s death, Black History Month was officially

Frugal Ways To Celebrate Valentine’s Day
A day set aside to shower a loved one with gifts and touching words of affection, Valentine’s Day brightens the often gloomy month of February. Established centuries ago with origins shrouded in mystery, Valentine’s Day has evolved into one of the most popular — and expensive — days of the year. Many couples celebrate Valentine’s Day with cards, gifts and nights out on the town, and such celebrations can stretch budgets. Coming on the heels of postholiday bills, Valentine’s Day can feel like a costly prospect. Yet, even those on a budget can enjoy a special day to remember without breaking the bank. The following are several frugal ways to enjoy Valentine’s Day.
right sentiments. Sometimes cards seem distant, too risqué or overly sentimental. Instead, create your own card. Find a decorative blank card or make one from card stock. Search through your digital photos and print one of the two of you together. Glue on a paper heart border, and then jot down some affectionate sentiments.
• Cleverly wrap favorite chocolate. Chocolate is synonymous with Valentine’s Day, and it’s easy to spend a lot on gourmet chocolates without even knowing if your valentine will like what’s inside the box. Stick to what you know he or she likes, even if it’s a simple chocolate bar from a convenience store. Buy a few and then wrap them in a fancy box with ribbon. • Go out for a small bite to eat. If you’re concerned about the cost of an expensive dinner out or anticipate being restricted to a certain menu, plan to dine at home. You can opt to go out for cocktails prior or head to a café for dessert and cappuccino afterward. This way you’ll still get the experience of going out without being forced to overspend.
• Create your own greeting card. It can be challenging to find cards that offer just the
• Purchase a rosebush. Bouquets of roses are traditional gifts for Valentine’s Day. However, thanks to the increased demand, the cost of roses tends to increase as Valentine’s Day draws nearer. If you want to save money but still give roses, buy a plant

that blooms each year. Buy a rosebush and plan to put it in the garden come spring when all danger of frost is gone.
• Turn older jewelry new again. Diamonds and other jewelry can be costly. If a new piece simply isn’t in the budget, consider repurposing an older piece of jewelry that isn’t worn as often. It’s amazing what a new setting on a ring can look like or how stones on a seldom-used necklace can be turned into fashionable stud earrings. If you have a good amount of mismatched gold jewelery lying around, you may be able to sell it or have it melted down and turned into a beautiful new creation.

How To Childproof Your Home
New parents face a host of challenges upon bring their newborn sons and daughters home, not the least of which is childproofing their homes so the newest additions to their families are safe and sound. The strategies moms and dads employ when childproofing their homes will change as youngsters grow older and mure curious, but the following are a few tips to get parents started. · Install safety latches and locks on cabinets and drawers. Curiosity might start to take over at the moment infants learn to crawl, so new parents should install safety latches and locks on all cabinets and drawers in their homes. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission notes that such latches and locks can prevent access to a host of potentially harmful items, such as medications, cleaning products, knives, and other sharp objects. · Use anti-scald devices. Burns from hot water can quickly cause significant burns to young children’s skin, so install anti-scald devices that regulate water temperature and reduce the risk of kids being burned. The CPSC also recommends lowering water heaters to 120 F to further reduce the risk of burns. · Use safety gates at stairways and in rooms that are off limits. Safety gates around stairways and in doorways of prohibited rooms can reduce the likelihood of potentially harmful falls and keep kids out of rooms where they might be harmed. Place gates in the doorways of rooms that contain sharp objects, work tools, substances that can prove harmful if ingested, and any other items you don’t want inquisitive tots to come into contact with. Make sure all safety gates at the top of stairways are the kind that can be nailed into the wall. · Attach bumpers to the edges of sharp furniture. Corner and edge bumpers can reduce the risk of injury when kids bang their heads on sharp furniture such as coffee tables or other items with hard edges. Make sure the bumpers are firmly secured before allowing youngsters into the room. Infants, toddlers and young children are vulnerable to injury around the house. Parents can reduce that injury risk by taking several steps to childproof their homes. More childproofing tips are available at www.cpsc.gov.

You are in a relationship and it’s time to celebrate your love, awesome! Here are some relationship tips that we think are pretty helpful!
Highlights of Marriage Counseling:
1. Try to understand the REAL intent behind each other’s actions, not just the feelings you have toward the consequences. People usually don’t intend to hurt each other. Sometimes we are just careless. 2. Guys Need to Know When You Want Them to Fix it VS. When You Need to Vent. Tell them before hand. 3. Stop The Expectations! ASSUMPTIONS KILL COMMUNICATION.
4. We are Different. And That’s Okay. Rally it is! 5. Men’s Minds Work in boxes, Women Think Like Spaghetti: AKA Men categorise and compartmentalize, Women multi task and constantly connect everything all at once. Ladies, help him focus on one box at a time. Stay on ONE subject.

Going Solar Is On The Rise
Rising energy costs and a growing desire to live more ecofriendly lifestyles has spurred interest in solar panels to power our homes. Although solar panels have been around for quite some time, only recently have homes cloaked in panels aimed at capturing the rays of the sunsolar panels begun to be so visible. The World Meteorological Organization reported that the solar industry saw a robust expansion of 41 percent in 2013, and that popularity continues to grow. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association®, in 2015 the solar industry grew an 34 percent more than 2013 figures. Through the first half of the year, the solar industry supplied 40 percent of all new 2015 electric generating capacity — more than any other energy technology. Solar energy now has the cumulative electric capacity to power more than 4.6 million average American homes. According to Green Tech Media, American solar companies are now installing one solar system every four minutes. If the market continues to grow at this pace, through 2016 there will be a system installed every 20 seconds. These gains in the solar industry may have been spurred on by the Solar Investment Tax Credit, which the SEIA says has helped to lower
the cost of solar energy by more than 73 percent.
How does solar energy work?
Solar energy is turned into electric power through the photovoltaic (PV) cells located in the solar panels. The PV cells transform sunlight into direct electric current. An inverter built into the system converts the DC electricity into the alternating current (AC) that powers homes. The AC is sent to the home’s electrical panel and used to power lights and other devices.
What happens at night?
Unless a home is self-contained and off the grid, the average homeowner will not have to worry about night usage or batteries to store energy. He or she will continue to use energy off of the traditional electrical system at night. Many electrical costs will be offset by the amount of extra solar energy put back into the grid. There are a variety of programs, and some homeowners may even reverse bills further based on how much electricity is generated.
Solar panel needs
Although it is ideal to have a south-facing location for panels, this is not an absolute necessity. According to SolarEnergy.net, positioning solar panels to face west or south will work, and even southeast-, east- and northnorthwest-facing panels can produce adequate energy savings. The type of roof may affect costs. Solar panels will not harm the roof when installed correctly, but ornate Spanish tiles or other roofing material may increase solar panel installation costs. Many homeowners find that the solar panels protect the roof from extreme weather, heat and cold, providing an extra bonus to solar energy.
Solar panel costs
The “soft costs” associated with solar energy can be substantial. Such costs include permits, installation and labor. Energy Informative indicates that the solar panels themselves are relatively affordable, at an average cost of $6,500. However, the entire process of installing residental solar systems can end up costing anywhere between $15,000 and $40,000. Homeowners may be able to lease solar panel systems to make solar energy a more affordable option.
Solar energy continues to be a hot topic and a growing trend in home energy solutions.

The Value of Remodeling
February
By: Kevin Bennett
The house’s previous owners hadn’t been too careful in the kitchen. Spills had regularly been made on the wooden floor, warping it grotesquely. It wasn’t just that it looked bad, it was hard to walk on. Bits of wood curled up, leaving unsightly gaps between planks. It had gotten so bad that the lady of the house was insistent on replacing the kitchen’s floor, though the man of the house wasn’t too enthusiastic about it. There was an argument she used which prevailed on him very well, however, and that had to do with the advantage of renovation. A house with new wooden floors was simply more valuable than one without, and the increase in value was vastly greater than the cost of replacing the floor was. “But honey, listen,” Phil pleaded, “you don’t know how much the installation is going to cost! I mean you’re going to have to purchase the flooring from one guy, and have another guy install it—” “That’s not true!” Karen cut him off. “Carpet Express Direct of Gillette doesn’t just sell flooring options, it also offers installation and evaluation. So you can have them look at the floor, and tell you what it’s going to cost.” “But honey, they’re going to be expensive—!” “Also not true; they’re the closest thing to wholesale in all of Northeastern Wyoming! Look at their website, it says right there,” and Karen pointed on her laptop. Phil bit his lip and nodded. “Okay...but look, if they only specialize in wooden floors, it’s going to be more expensive than a place that has more—” “Oh, would you quit talking and just read? The place is called Carpet Express Direct. They do wood floors, carpets, liquid vinyl plank, whatever that is—” “It’s a really good synthetic option that looks like the real thing.” “—yeah, that. And they do tile, and they do laminate and linoleum; shoot, they even do rubber floors and cement flooring, if you need like a workout room, or a workshop.” “Hey, we could do the basement and put in those weights I’ve been meaning to!” “Well, so long as we get the kitchen done
first,” Karen admonished.
just by replacing the kitchen floor.
“Hm. Give me your laptop, let me look at that.”
Over time, interiors will naturally break down just like anything else. Whether or not you’ve put in flooring recently, it will be necessary to do so eventually. Thankfully, Carpet Express Direct is always available to help you save and maintain. For great deals and greater value, choose Carpet Express Direct.
“Sure thing!” Phil took the laptop and scrolled through the options on Carpet Express’s website. They did indeed have a variety of discounts and deals. “Look at this Oscar’s Red Carpet, hun. Buck twenty-five a square foot. We could do the whole family room for half a grand! That’d go with that ‘scarlet’ thing you’ve got going on in there.” “How about you let me decide which carpet goes best with my home decor?” “Hey, you’re the one who brought it up. Alright, I’m not saying yes—I’m not saying yes! But I think you’re onto something here. I’ve heard a lot about property values increasing with a little renovation, and the floors could use a sprucing up.” “Shoot, the whole house could!” “Now don’t get ahead of yourself, babe; let’s take this one step at a time!” And so the conversation went. Eventually, it resulted in Phil and Karen taking a short trip to the Carpet Express Direct store. It was easy enough to find at 1211 South Douglas Highway. Right in Gillette, and with a great variety of flooring options available to peruse, the store did a very good job of restoring Phil’s confidence in a remodel. You too can save time and money at Carpet Express Direct of Gillette. With a variety of flooring options in all sizes and kinds, it’s easy to see why Carpet Express Direct is a go-to option for many contractors and refurbishment experts throughout the region. The more you can save, the more lucrative the remodel! With helpful personnel that are experts in all things flooring, as well as installation and maintenance options, Carpet Express Direct not only offers extreme savings, they offer exceptional value. Phil and Karen found that out quickly, adding several thousand dollars to their property’s value

Healthy Habits To Combat Stress
Stress has an immediate and potentially long-term effect on the human body. Though it’s a natural response to both good and bad experiences, stress, when chronic, can produce a host of negative consequences that greatly diminish one’s quality of life.
Combatting stress can sometimes be difficult, as the causes of stress are never too far away for many adults. In its 2015 “Stress in AmericaTM: Paying With Our Health” survey, the American Psychological Association found that money is the top cause of stress for Americans. The survey was conducted on behalf of the APA by Harris Poll, which asked more than 3,000 participants about their issues with stress. Sixtyfour percent said money was a somewhat or very significant source of stress, and that number was even higher for parents (77 percent). Survey respondents also noted that work is a significant source of stress. Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their present-day quality of life. • Develop a support network. Speaking about problems with trusted friends and family members can be an effective way to combat stress. The APA study found that participants who reported having an emotional support network reported lower stress levels than those who had no such networks to rely on. Try to over-
HouseHunterWY.com
come any reticence you might have about speaking about your stress to a close friend or trusted relative on those days when stress seems overwhelming.
• Get more exercise. Routine exercise is another healthy way to combat stress. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, studies have shown that exercise can reduce fatigue, improve alertness and concentration and enhance overall cognitive function. Those are considerable benefits to people dealing with elevated levels of stress, which can contribute to both physical and mental fatigue and negatively impact one’s ability to concentrate. Studies also have shown that regular exercise can decrease tension, which tends to increase as stress levels rise, and elevate and help to stabilize mood, which often decreases as stress levels increase. • Don’t lean on alcohol after stressful days. Many people respond to stressful days by
Page 29
consuming alcohol. While alcohol helps some people forget a stressful day, it also produces psychological and physiological side effects that can compound the effects of the very stress drinkers are looking to relieve. People who drink to alleviate stress may only be doing more harm with each drink, so find a way to cope with stress that has a more positive impact on both your body and mind than that produced by alcohol. • Breathe deeply. The American Institute of Stress notes that focused breathing is a relaxation response that stimulates the nervous system and promotes a sense of calmness. Deep breathing can combat stress, lower blood pressure and draw your attention away from those things that are causing your stress. Visit www. stress.org to learn about deep breathing exercises. Stress if a fact of life for many people. But while stress may be inevitable, it can be overcome.

How To Maintain Mental Focus
The technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the Internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive.
• Get more exercise. Studies have shown that exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19 studies involving more than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of exercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men
HouseHunterWY.com
and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporating some exercise, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous workout, into their midday routines.
• Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oftoverlooked cause of loss of focus. When nervous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concentrate. Professional athletes have long espoused to the virtues of breathing exercises as a means to calming their nerves, and professionals can follow suit. Some simple breathing exercises can help busy professionals multitask more effectively by helping them concentrate on the tasks at hand and overcome the distraction of having so much
Page 31
to do at one time.
• Stay hydrated. A recent study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that dehydration caused loss of focus and a sense of fatigue among women. While the loss of focus was considered insubstantial and the study only examined women, remaining hydrated throughout the day may make it easier to focus on work and other tasks throughout the day. • Get adequate sleep. One of the best ways to improve focus during the day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of negative consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Research has shown that sleep deprivation compromises alertness and concentration, making it more difficult to focus at work and tackle tasks that require deep analysis and thought. In addition, a survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep-deprived men and women are less likely to exercise and eat healthy diets, each of which can boost mental acuity. Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration.

* Generally, for every degree you lower your thermostat during heating season, you reduce your energy costs by 3 percent. * Want to include more produce in your diet? Sources say prep is the step that makes it work. Clean, chop, slice and otherwise prepare all your produce choices for the week on the day you shop. When it’s ready and waiting, you’re less likely to skip it in favor of something more convenient (and likely less nutritious).

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Did You Know
In its 2015 “Cost vs. Value Report,” Remodeling magazine found that a midrange kitchen remodeling project, which cost an average of nearly $57,000 during the period examined, recouped roughly 68 percent of that cost at resale. That return was slightly less than that provided by midrange bathroom remodeling projects, which provided a 70 percent return at resale. More upscale remodeling projects provided even smaller returns, despite costing substantially more money. For example, the cost of major upscale kitchen remodeling projects averaged $113,000 during the time studied for the report. But only 59 percent of that sizable investment provided was recouped at resale. Upscale bathroom remodeling projects also underperformed compared to midrange projects, recouping slightly less than 60 percent at resale. No upscale project referenced in the report provided a greater return than replacing existing siding with new fiber-cement siding, a project that recouped homeowners a greater than 84 percent return at resale. The Best (And Worst) Foods For Heart Health HouseHunterWY.com
Page 42
No one wants to hear from their doctors that they have joined the millions of people across the globe to be diagnosed with heart disease. The Heart Foundation reports that heart disease, which includes diseases of the heart and cardiovascular system and stroke, is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, affecting both men and women and most racial/ethnic groups. Heart disease also is one of the leading causes of death in Canada, claiming more than 33,000 lives per year. Many factors contribute to the development of heart disease, including smoking, lack of exercise and stress. Diet and whether a person is overweight or obese also can have a direct link to heart health. Diet, particularly for those with diabetes and poorly controlled blood sugar levels, is a major concern. A variety of foods are considered helpful for maintaining a strong and healthy heart and cardiovascular system, while others can contribute to conditions that may eventually lead to cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrest. Moderation enables a person to sample a little of everything, but not to make any one food a habit. The following are some foods to promote heart health and some foods you might want to avoid.

part to its high saturated fat content.
• Fatty fish: Many cold-water, fatty fish, such as halibut, herring and salmon, contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are heart-healthy. Omega-3s also can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and some soy products.
• Red meats: Enjoying a steak is probably not as bad as eating a deep-fried brownie, but it’s best to limit red meat consumption to about 10 percent or less of your diet. Red meats can have a considerable amount of cholesterol, saturated fat and calories.
• Beans: Beans and other legumes are an excellent source of protein and can be a stand-in for meats that are high in saturated fat. Beans also contain cholesterollowering soluble fiber and folate, which can reduce blood homocystein levels. The Bean Institute reports that consuming beans may reduce cholesterol levels by roughly six to 10 percent. • Yogurt: Researchers in Japan found yogurt may protect against gum disease. Left untreated, gum disease may elevate a person’s risk for heart disease. Yogurt contains good bacteria that can counteract bad bacteria and boost immunity. • Raisins: Raisins contain antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation. Inflammation is often linked to heart disease and other debilitating conditions. Fresh produce also is a good source of antioxidants.

• Tree nuts: Tree nuts contain unsaturated fats that can help lower LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and improve HDL (the good stuff). Nuts also are a filling source of protein and other healthy nutrients.
• Fried foods: Many fried foods have little nutritional value, as they tend to be high in saturated and trans fats. French fries are particularly bad because they are carbohydrates fried and then doused in salt.
• Whole grains: Whole grains contain complex carbohydrates for energy, as well as protein and fiber. Fiber can help scrub choles-

• Added sugars: Sugar can increase blood pressure and triglyceride levels. Sugar often hides out in foods that you would not associate with the sweetener. Plus, many people unwittingly consume too much sugar simply through sugar-sweetened beverages and ready-to-eat cereals. • Salty foods: Leave the salt shaker in the spice cabinet and opt for herbs for flavoring, advises the American Heart Association. High-sodium diets often are to blame for hypertension, a major risk factor for heart disease. • Dairy: Artery-clogging saturated fat also can be found in dairy products, particularly the full-fat versions. Butter, sour cream and milk can be problematic when people overindulge. Opt for lowfat dairy when possible.

Tea Traditions Around The World HouseHunterWY.com
One of the oldest beverages known to mankind, tea in its various forms is enjoyed across the globe. Believed to have originated in China, tea has been consumed for millennia. Some attribute its discovery and invention to Chinese emperor and herbalist Shennong in 2732 BCE. Legend says that the emperor liked his drinking water boiled so it would be free of pathogens. One day, on a trip to a distant region, a leaf from a wild tea bush fell unnoticed into the boiled water presented to the emperor. The emperor found the flavor refreshing, and tea was born. Today, tea is consumed for pleasure and to ease sore throats and other ailments and has even been used as a medicine. It also has been ingrained in traditions and customs from around the world, with the beverage varying in significance from country to country.
China
The Chinese emphasize the flavor and preparation of tea. The Chinese Tea Ceremony brings about peace, tranquility, enjoyment, and truth. The art of making tea is called “Cha do,” and the Chinese take tea seriously. The Emily Post Institute says tea is heavily incorporated into all aspects of Chinese life. Tea is served with the same care for service that is applied when serving wine in other countries.
Britain
Tea is often associated with England, and the British fervor for tea helped spread it to the New World. While tea only arrived in England in the 1600s, the country embraced it, making “afternoon tea” a popular tradition. The traditional tea hour was between 4 and 5 p.m., when tea was served as a light refreshment between lunch and dinner. There also are specific ways to prepare and serve English tea, such as pre-warming the teapot and preferential use of loose tea or larger tea bags in a teapot instead of single-use teabags in a cup.
Russia
Many Russians also love tea. Tea was once considered an upper-class product, but it is now enjoyed by Russians of various means. Zavarka, a very strong tea that can be enjoyed for several rounds, is very popular in Russia.
February
India
The Emily Post Institute offers that India is one of the world’s largest tea suppliers, and the population consumes more tea than any other country in the world. Chai is the national drink, and hosts often serve a spicy milk-tea to guests.
Japan
The Japanese have their own tea ceremonies, also called “The Way of the Tea.” A ceremonial preparation of “matcha,” which is a powdered green tea, is as much about performance art as it is about the tea itself. The tea is served to a small group of people in popular teahouses. Tea has won the world over with its appeal and versatility, earning its reputation as one of the world’s most popular social beverages.

Move Into The Outdoors With Wood Furniture
Page 46
It’s time to think about the “lazy days of summer” and create a comfortable, attractive outdoor living area that reflects your family’s lifestyle. Consider décor featuring wood furniture that you build yourself, using advice and products from Woodcraft. Or, if you already have wood furniture, let Woodcraft help you give it a new look — maybe distressed or antiqued or a brand-new color.
Furniture Options Woodcraft offers nearly three dozen building plans for the popular Adirondack chair in several individual styles, as well as a rocker, loveseat, folding, twin adjustable, chaise lounge, child size, and footstools. Adirondack chair templates are also available. Other outdoor seating plans include Tudor style chairs, folding sling chairs and porch and folding patio rockers. Picnic table-bench combo plans include the traditional shape and an octagonal version, while bench plans feature seats with and without backs/arms in various styles such as Tudor, Lutyens, English, and arched. Traditional porch swing plans come in several styles, some with frames for yard use. Glider plans are also available. Other plans include a tree seat, garden trellises, a footbridge, birdhouses, and a camp kitchen. Tools & Products to Build (Or Repair) Once you have selected a rot-resistant wood, such as cypress, cedar, locust or white oak, the 7.0 amp variablespeed Bosch Barrel Grip Jigsaw with a tool-less blade-change system will make cutting chores easy. Keep a work surface handy with the 30” x 24” lightweight, portable QuikBENCH equipped with a vise, a 15-amp, threeoutlet power strip and four bench dogs. Add more benches for a larger surface. To join the furniture pieces, Kreg Jig HD Starter Kit will do the job using

pocket-hole joinery. The Kreg Jig® HD is made to work with 11⁄2” and thicker material to build outdoor furniture, fences, trellises, and more. Kreg Jig® HD Screws are #14 hardened-steel screws with a Protec-Kote™ finish that has three anti-corrosion layers. Other tools, supplies and hardware that come in handy for furniture projects include:
• Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue for interior and exterior use is waterproof (not for use under water), cleans up with water, has an eight-minute open assembly time, and offers an application temperature as low as 47°F. • Chappell Universal Stainless Steel Square combines a center rule and a bench square. • eTape16 Digital Tape Measure features a readout in 1⁄16” and 1mm increments and easy conversion to feet, inches and fractions. • The new Festool TXS Compact Drill Driver Set is lightweight but powerful and can reach into tight spots easily. • The lightweight, compact Grex GC1850 Cordless 2”, 18-gauge Brad Nailer features an all-metal robust construction with the power to sink 2” 18-gauge brad nails into 2” red oak. • Combo Adjustable Adirondack Chair Hardware works for the comple-

mentary Adirondack Plan Value Pack that includes three furniture plans. • HIGHPOINT XT Square Drive Woodworking Screws, Flathead, 100-piece packs offer almost twice the torque values of other screws. • Glider Bracket Hardware fits most gliders and can be used to replace old worn or broken brackets typically used in outdoor gliders. • Glider Rocker Bearing Kit includes low-speed steel bearings with a smooth bore that will fit a standard 3⁄8” bolt. Bearings will retrofit to most any glider rockers for easy repair. Finishing Selecting a finish offers the opportunity to customize furniture for your family’s tastes and lifestyle. Color and special effects options are the “tools” for this creative endeavor. • For removing finish when refinishing furniture, Blue Bear Paint and Urethane Stripper (Soy Gel) is a good choice because it has no known health hazards, is virtually odorless and works well. • General Finishes Milk Paint is for use indoors or outdoors, and the 28 premixed colors can be mixed, lightened, glazed, layered, antiqued, or distressed. • General Finishes Outdoor Oil Finish is ideal for exterior weather conditions and may be used over other brands of exterior oil stain or exterior clear oil finishes for additional protection. • WoodRiver Pure Tung Oil provides a natural, long-lasting finish. • General Finishes 450 Varnish in Satin minimizes fading, retards mold and fungus growth and can be applied quickly to achieve a clear, tough finish. • System Three Marine Spar Varnish in Satin is designed for exterior surfaces and provides long-lasting protection against water and marine environments. To learn more about these and other products, visit your local Woodcraft store, call (800) 535-4482 or visit www. woodcraft.com.

29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: 31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. King James Version (KJV)
Isaiah 40: 29-31
