g’sesk HuD Psalm 90:12 KJV “ So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
You expect it to happen but even so, no one is really ready for it when it does happen. I had a little trouble understanding my older sister when she called me at work Tuesday morning. Her crying made her words blurry. Dad was gone. Half an hour earlier, Crane Bennett, age 96, left us fatherless. It was a relief to realize his fight had ended . . . finally. The last two years of bone cancer and the trauma of sometimes unmanageable pain had spent him completely. Now Dad was on his way and free from physical suffering at last. All six of his children knew he loved us, but it wasn’t until during his funeral Friday as we worked through our grief that it occurred to me why Dad had held on so long against unimaginable pain. You see, in 1932 at age 16 he’d lost his father in a car accident. As the firstborn in a family that now included a new widow and five children he’d experienced early in life the sorrow of becoming fatherless as well as the responsibility of being the primary breadwinner before the safety net of Social Security even existed. And he didn’t want us to be fatherless. So he held on in spite of the pain. For us. Say hi to Gram Benney and my big brother Michael for me. God bless you Dad. You’re the best. Hugh Bennett, Editor

THE SERVICE (1.18.2013)
The bitter, icy winds of winter, Denied the sun its warmth, As we gathered on the desolate hillside Where barren, granite monuments Marked the final resting place Of those, who were now, but a name Chiseled into the fl at, stone markers, We came from all across the country, To say good-bye to Dad, one final time. The Sons, the Daughters and Grandchildren The Soldier, a Comedian, the Dentist, Little Children, too young to know, Old Friends and Dad’s best dog Scout, Gathered together to say farewell To this man who meant so much, To this man we so loved. A fl ag covered the pewter gray casket, On behalf of a grateful nation, To a soldier who once went to war in its name. His children spoke on his behalf, The Preacher said a prayer, Then “Amazing Grace” was sung by all, The sweet words borne away by winter winds, To bless the barren hills of sleeping cemetery. Then came a moment of awkward quiet, As cold reality finally settled in like a blanket; That he was gone; he had left his earthly body, We would never see him again in this life, Hear his voice, see the laughter and joy in his eyes, For he had crossed the ultimate, final bridge at last From the living to another world; another dimension, As sadly, we witnessed his ultimate transformation, Now lumps of grief, gathered in our throats; Tears trickled our eyes in sorrow, As we became caught up in heartache and mourning For Dad’s departure from this world and from us, Knowing inside, we all must cross that bridge one day As the cold reality of our own impending death Transformed us all, into a long moment of silence. The soldiers fired one final salute into the clear heavens, And it was now over; there was nothing left to say or do. We drifted away leaving Dad alone to his final rest, Knowing he had left his tired body behind, And would be waiting to welcome, All of us…home.

Cost-Effective & Eco-Friendly Home Improvements
H
omeowners take on projects to improve their homes for a variety of reasons. Some may do so to make a home more functional, while others may do so to improve their home’s resale value or to make their homes more eco-friendly. Such projects are often mistakenly assumed to be costly undertakings, but there are several cost-effective ways to make a home more ecofriendly. Upgrade your appliances. A home improvement project does not have to require the use of a hammer and nails or the hiring of a contractor. A
PAGE 10
simple home improvement project like upgrading older appliances, including the washer and dryer, to newer, more efficient models can give a home a fresh look while reducing energy consumption. That reduction in energy consumption is a byproduct of the stricter standards placed on manufacturers who must adhere to guidelines to produce products that are more energy-efficient. Add more insulation. Adding more insulation or replacing older insulation used to be an especially laborious process. However, in many instances insulation can now be added or upgraded to a home without any major reconstruction or demolition, reducing the cost of the project considerably. Adding more insulation to a home can reduce energy consumption in the winter, when the home will feel warmer and allow you to keep the thermostat at a more reasonable number. Install high-efficiency water fixtures. Few people think about how much water they consume over the course of a typical day, but the figures might be eye-opening to those who hope to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle. According to the United States Geological Survey’s Water Science School, it’s generally accepted that the average person uses between 80 and 100 gallons of water each day. Showers seem to be especially wasteful, as older shower heads might be using as much as 5 gallons per minute, or 50 gallons of water during a 10-minute shower. Older fixtures that consume such www.HouseHunterEtc.com
massive amounts of water can be easily and affordably replaced with newer, more efficient fixtures. Today’s high-efficiency low-flow showerheads can provide a strong shower stream while reducing water consumption. Such showerheads are also less taxing on your water heater, reducing your energy consumption as a result. Homeowners can also install highefficiency toilets that use as little as 1.3 gallons of water per flush (compared to older models that consumed as many as 5 gallons per flush). Install a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats present another affordable way to improve a home and benefit the environment. Some of today’s programmable thermostats can record personal preferences and usage and determine the best course of action for heating and cooling your home. Temperatures can be adjusted room-by-room, and the programmable thermostat allows homeowners to control their heating and cooling while they’re out of the house, ensuring they’re not paying to heat or cool an empty house and wasting energy in doing so. Home improvement projects don’t have to be a grand undertaking, particularly when a homeowner’s goal is to make a home more ecofriendly. A few minor and affordable changes may be all it takes to improve a home and benefit the environment at the same time. ∑ FEBRUARY 2013

Find the right paint color for you Painting is one of the least expensive, quickest and easiest ways to immediately transform the look of a room. With a change of color, any space can immediately take on a new personality. Choosing the perfect color for a room is key. There’s no right or wrong color, it’s simply about homeowners finding the right hue for them. While it may be tempting to follow the trends, sometimes the “in” colors simply do not mesh with a homeowner’s design style. In such instances it’s best to go with what feels the best. Choosing colors that impart a certain mood can also help create a dramatic, comforting or energizing space. Certain families of colors say different things and can create a particular atmosphere. Here are some common colors and what they can do for design. Green: If the desire is for a relaxing, all-natural retreat, green may very well be the color to choose. Green’s connection to nature makes the shade refreshing and soothing to the eye. It can instantly create a calming effect in any space and homeowners need not worry about going overboard with shades of green. Complementary colors to green include shades of red and pink. Use this accent color in draperies or on prints. Fill a vase with magenta-colored blooms to add a special pop of color. Blue: Another calming color is blue. It can make a room serene and soothing. Blue is a cool color, which means it can also be used in abundance with little worry. Make a bedroom a quiet retreat with the right shade of blue. A touch of orange or peach blends well with blue. Red: An energizing and dramatic color, red demands attention. It’s stimulating and provocative, and some people love an entire room of red. However, to others red can be overwhelming. But red can be used on an accent wall or sparingly to spruce up a neutral color scheme.
PAGE 12
Purple: This color is often relegated to a girl’s room, but purple is elegant and regal and can add a touch of romance to a room. Individuals torn over painting with red may want to try the drama of purple, which is a bit more subdued and mysterious. Yellow: There are few colors more uplifting than yellow. This hue is reminiscent of a bright, sunny day. A dark house can be brightened by painting a room in a soft shade of yellow that will reflect any visible light. From bedrooms to bathrooms to kitchens, yellow is a versatile, illuminating shade. Orange: Another vibrant color is orange. This hue can be captivating and friendly and also brighten up dull spaces. Orange adds energy to a room, so it may not be best for bedrooms or other calming retreats, like a den. Homeowners needn’t paint a room pumpkin to get the full effect of orange. More subtle shades, like apricot or terra-cotta, can also add the power of orange. www.HouseHunterEtc.com
Pink: Pink is a romantic color and ultra-feminine. Pink has long been considered nothing more than a bedroom color, but when used in the right fashion, it can also add spirited whimsy to a living space. Brown: This earthy, wholesome shade is rustic and rich. It can make a large room seem more cozy. It also exudes a feeling of sensuality and durability. Neutral shades of brown are very popular in homes because they can be paired with many other colors, including blue, green and pink. White: Some homeowners think the absence of color is ideal. White is fresh, bright and clean. It’s also a timeless choice for consumers who can’t decide on another color. White goes with just about anything, but if all white seems too sterile, think about mixing white with shades of beige for just a little color. Experimenting with color can dramatically change the look of any room in the house. Consider using an online room simulator to try out different shades before painting. FEBRUARY 2013

AllisonStrange N
athan was a mildly pimpled waiter at Claire’s Diner. He was the new kid on-staff, and was about to have the most gently strange Valentine’s Day of his life. To be sure, the evening was only partly his fault. The rest of the blame belonged with the hostess that evening, Tammy. “I hate Valentine’s Day,” Nathan said, leaning on the podium near the restaurant’s entrance. “Because you’re always alone?” Tammy didn’t look up; she was busy doing hostess things with the table-chart. “No.” “Why then?” “Okay, yes. But everybody says that.” “You can’t be happy for all these fine couples here tonight?” “It’d be a lot easier if I were part of a couple.” “You could always take Laura from the prep-line out.” “Ha! Thanks, but I like to keep my trysts with creatures of the same species.” “Ooh, that’s mean, Nate. That’s just mean.” “True though.” “It is not! Laura’s a sweet girl.” “I’m sure her mother tells her that every night,” Nathan smirked. A car pulled into the lot, heralding the evening rush. Tammy squinted at it, then sent a calculating look Nathan’s way, before saying: “I’ll bet I can change your mind before shift’s over.” “Oh yeah? What do I win?” “Don’t get cocky.” “How about you go out on a date with me somewhere when we’re off?” Tammy considered a moment, then said: “Fine. But if I win, you’ve got to do the front-of-house sweeping and vacuuming.” “Done.” They shook hands. “Alright, Tam. Do your worst.” “I won’t even have to.” Just then an odd-looking middle-aged woman ambled in through the front door and said: “My usual table, Tammy.” “Of course! It’s in Nathan’s section tonight,” and she grinned mischievously at him as she took several menus and walked up the stairs to the most secluded two-top in the diner, stopping only to call over her shoulder: “I hope you like sweeping!” “I hate it!” Nate called back, then headed to the kitchen to pick up a candle. The woman Tammy sat in his section was short, squat, unattractive and strange. Her name was Allison, and on some level she was fully aware of her…uniqueness; but it seldom bothered her. After all, one PAGE 16
can’t live one’s life constantly fretting over the impressions others have of you. What mattered were her friends at the group home, and Blake, who arrived several minutes after she was seated. Blake didn’t care what the others thought, and he was tall and strong and handsome. He never forgot Allison’s birthday; he always knew just what she wanted for Christmas, and he was never afraid to spend time with her in or out of public. Blake never cared who saw them together. He loved Allison for Allison, and that was that. He was so romantic on Valentine’s Day, too. He always took her to her favorite restaurant and they had the most lovely evening—even if he was the slightest bit late tonight. “I think I’ll do the shrimp,” Blake said as he sat down. “Oooh! That’s a great idea—I will too.” “Babe, you always get the shrimp.” “Yes, because I like it, silly!” Blake chuckled. “How about you get a nice steak tonight? It’s all on me. Money’s no object.” “I would, but I don’t think I’m hungry enough.” “Alrighty, hon.” He looked at the menu a moment, raising his head when he saw the waiter coming with a lit candle. “I’ll be right back.” “Where are you…?” “Restroom,” and he scooted out his chair. “Hurry up, I’ll get us drinks!” Nathan came around the corner with a synthetic smile he likely discovered during last week’s training. He gingerly set down the candle, but before he could speak Allison said: “We’ll have a bottle of barefoot White Zinfandel water, please.” Nathan’s eyebrow twitched: “Are you meeting someone?” “It’s my husband,” Allison replied. “He’ll be back in just a moment; he’s just gone to the restroom.” “Sounds good. Just one thing—can I see your ID?” “Oh a flatterer!” Allison giggled and fished around her purse until she found it. Nathan looked it over and handed it back: “Looks good. Before I go, I wanted to let you know of our special. Since it’s Valentine’s Day, we’ve got a couples’ dinner discount on our signature shrimp—” “Yes, I think we’ll have that. Blake and I. He wanted me to try something else tonight, but I love the shrimp.” www.HouseHunterEtc.com
by Chris Morgan
“Uh…sounds good. Can I get you any appetizers?” “No, thanks. I’m—we’re—trying to keep healthy.” “Alrighty then, I’ll be right out with that wine,” and he turned on his heel and left. Blake was back a moment later. “What did you get?” “The shrimp.” “Again?” “I love the shrimp! I also got us a bottle of White Zinfandel.” “Good! My favorite.” “I know,” she smiled back, then blew him a kiss. “I love you, Blake.” “I love you, too, Ally-cat.” And so went the night. They talked of each others’ day—Allison worked as a maid in a motel six outside of town. Blake was always away on sales trips. There were laughs, and the food was delicious, and they stayed at their private corner table most of the night. Allison couldn’t have known it, but Nathan kept a very close eye on her table. There was a small window on each of the swinging doors that led to the kitchen, and he watched her as best he could without getting in the way of the other servers that came and went. Of course he had other tables and things to do, so he couldn’t always keep an eye out. There was something wrong, though. Something very wrong. He had checked on Allison’s table several times over the last hour, but she hadn’t ordered anything since the main course. Not even doggie bags; though the last time he’d ascended the terrace, both plates were thoroughly empty. “Hope you like sci-fi movies, Tam,” he called over his shoulder as he passed the hostess podium from the kitchen. “Hope you like fighting vacuum cords,” Tammy shot back. “Nope, vacuuming’s woman’s work.” “Exactly, that’s why you’ll be doing it tonight instead of me.” “Ha, ha.” An expected retort, to be sure; but Tammy’s choice of tactics in this bet still had Nathan wary. Maybe she wanted to go out with him, but needed some excuse. Nathan couldn’t be sure. His mind kept going round and round about it until finally the restaurant was within a half hour of closing, and it seemed the best time to deliver the check to Allison. Continued on page 39

Bruce Nehl’s father & older brother bought the Overhead Door Co. of Rapid City in the mid 70’s. Then in 1978, Bruce & his two brothers bought the Overhead Door Co. of Gillette where Bruce and his wife Nancy ran the business. The family enterprise expanded to include the Overhead Door Co. of Pierre after which Bruce became the sole owner of the Overhead Door Co. of Gillette. Over the years they’ve seen real changes - from the 80’s boom of heavy industry to the recent housing explosion and Bruce’s untimely passing. Soon enough, son Kayce and daughter Robynn came to the company and through it all, the family’s kept standards high and service of the finest quality. As the third generation of family began working in the business, their lifetime experence as well as that of long time employees Tip and Bob, who have nearly 50 years combined experience, will benefit current and future customers. In fact, good service and a warranty to back it has been Overhead Door Company of Gillette’s hallmark since 1978. FEBRUARY 2013

Dinosaur Diggin’
By Ted Gajewski
When traveling West on Interstate 90 (I-90), as you come up on the Western South Dakota, you’ll pass through an area called the “Bad Lands.” Once you pass this area and head towards Wyoming, you’ll be entering one of North America’s greatest fossil beds. This is the area the dinosaurs called home, and a large portion of them still exist in the form of the fossils unearthed in our region. Even though you enter into this area at the Bad Lands in South Dakota, we are not going to concentrate there; we are going just West and into Northeast Wyoming. I-90 pulls into Wyoming at the town of Beulah and just a few miles West is one of Northeastern Wyoming’s biggest fossilized attractions, the “Vore Buffalo Jump.” This entire territory in times past was home to the Plains Indians. One reason they found this area attractive was due to the large herds of buffalo roaming the plains. This area and the Black Hills are believed to have spiritual and important material properties. The Vore Buffalo Jump is on the cusp of the Great Plains and the Black Hills, thus making it very attractive to the buffalo hunters. In fact the site was used by five or more tribes in about a 300 year period from 1500 to 1800 AD. Once you see the Vore Buffalo Jump you’ll realize the process it served in assisting the Indians to gather food for the tribes. It is a natural sink hole in the middle of what were flat plains. The Indian buffalo hunters would round up herds of buffalo and push them in the direction of the Vore Buffalo Jump. The buffalo, in a stampede type of frenzy, would run over the edge of the pit and plunge to the bottom. The Indians would then enter the pit and PAGE 28
start processing the meat, pelts and everything else they could keep from the animals. What was left would remain in the pit and eventually be buried by sediment; these are called varves. Upon digging on the site scientist could count the layers, much like counting the rings of a tree, and this is how they can date the individual jumps. Contained in the site you’ll find the butchered remains of as many as 20,000 buffalo, as well as thousands of chipped stone arrow points,
knives and other tools. The dig at the bottom of the pit is as deep as 20 feet and has 22 levels that extend downward. The Vore Buffalo Jump was discovered in the early 70’s during the construction of I-90. Now, lets move on to the big guys. Just about 22 miles West of Beulah, you’ll find an area called Inyan Cara. It was a bit more rugged than the plains, and had some more prominent sized creatures roaming there. Huge turtles www.HouseHunterEtc.com
and crocodiles have been found in the surrounding area, which leads one to believe the dinosaurs were more abundant in the land. Once again on I-90, an active dig is taking place just about 20 feet off the Eastbound lane. In the summer months, the University of Wyoming brings students in to excavate the site. Not a large portion of the site has been excavated, but it is a work in progress. As the bones of the dinosaurs are removed they are wrapped in plaster and shipped to the University of Wyoming. Road crews discovered this site as they worked on I-90. On special dates in the summer you can find students at the site clearing rubble from around the fossils. Gillette, Wyoming just 80 miles from the South Dakota border is the home of a new dig site. A Gillette resident and a member of the group “Fossil Finders” were given a permit to work in a dinosaur dig site North of Gillette in Campbell County. As the fossil bones are cleaned they will be put on display in Gillette’s Rockpile Museum. Some of the bones found are from a Triceratops, which is Wyoming’s state dinosaur. The Triceratops is a large, three-horned animal with a large frill like fan on the back of its skull. The Triceratops is one of the most widely recognized dinosaur fossils found. The animal’s large size, about 8 meters long and weighing in at about 8,800 to 11,000 pounds, is quite formidable. The Triceratops is widely known from Eastern to Western Wyoming, South East Montana and Southwest South Dakota. The Triceratops, a plant eater, had a beak like jaw much like a turtle, and is believed to have permitted the animal to snap off tough vegetation. Its teeth were crowded together to Continued on page 37 FEBRUARY 2013

The musical name, “Wyoming,” was used by J.M. Ashley of Ohio, who, as early as 1865, introduced a bill to Congress to provide a “temporary government for the territory of Wyoming.” It was to be formed from portions of the Dakota, Utah and Idaho territories. The bill was referred to a committee where it rested until 1868. During debate on the bill in the U.S. Senate in 1868, other possible names were suggested, such as Cheyenne, Shoshoni, Arapaho, Sioux, Platte, Big Horn, Yellowstone, Sweetwater and Lincoln. “Wyoming” was already commonly used and remained the popular choice.

Answer on page 40
The name Wyoming was adopted from two Delaware Indian words, MECHEWEAMI-ING. To the Indians it meant “at the big plains,” or “on the great plain,” certainly appropriate for Wyoming.

e m i T r te n i W s k c i r T & s p i T g n i ll Gri Barbecuing isn't just for the lazy days of summer. Delicious grilled meals are easy to prepare year-round. Here are a few tips for winter barbecuing that are important to remember before you get the snow shovel out. Always pre-heat your barbecue. Pre-heat to 400° F -- 450° F at minimum, and adjust the temperature from there. Remember, if food doesn't sizzle when you put it on the grill, your barbecue is not hot enough. If you are grilling with charcoal, include more charcoal for the increased pre-heating time and extra heat. Cooking times may change with extreme cold. Always use an instant read thermometer to ensure that foods are cooked thoroughly. Grill with the lid down. Heat loss on a cold day is significantly greater than a warm summer day, and keeping
PAGE 32
your barbecue at a consistent temperature will be very difficult with the lid open. When grilling on a windy day, try to reduce your exposure to the wind. If grilling at lower temperatures, keep an eye on your barbecue to ensure that it does not blow out. If you do need to move your barbecue out of the wind, keep minimum clearances in mind to avoid damaging your deck or home’s siding. Clear a work area around your barbecue. This won't impact cooking time, but having enough room to work without filling your boots with snow makes for a much more enjoyable barbecue experience and avoids any

untimely slips or falls. Several lighting options are available. Some barbecues have built in lighting, and add-on handle lights are available so you're not grilling in the dark. * Never use your barbecue indoors, in your garage or in an enclosed area. Carbon Monoxide accumulation, accidental fire damage, and smoke damage are all possible -it's not worth the risk. Clear off that barbecue and get winter grilling!

Simple Means to
Saving Money
If the ongoing recession has taught people anything, it’s the need for saving money. Many people were caught off guard by the recession, and studies have shown just how little men and women had saved before the bottom fell out on the economy. In a 2011 poll from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, 64% of respondents admitted they would not be able to rely on their savings account if a $1,000 unplanned expense suddenly popped up. Such figures should be enough to motivate men and women to start saving, not only for retirement but for an unforeseen event like a layoff that could put finances in serious jeopardy. The following are four ways you can save money that won’t require too much sacrifice: Pay Extra Each Month on Loans. If paying extra money each month sounds like an odd way to save money, keep in mind that paying ahead on loans can substantially reduce the amount of interest that accrues over the course of the loan. Although, some loan agreements include prepayment penalties that actually penalize customers for paying ahead. But if the loan agreement has no such penalties, sending a little extra each month reduces the loan’s principle faster, meaning borrowers will pay less in interest and pay off their loans faster. Shop Sales. Shopping sales is a simple way to save, yet many people don’t take advantage of sales. Whether grocery shopping, shopping for home furnishings or adding on to your wardrobe, shopping sales is a great way to save substantial amounts of money. When visiting the grocery store, sign up for the store’s club membership, which in many cases
automatically earns you sale prices as long as you remember to swipe the club card before paying. When shopping for clothes, peruse the clearance racks, especially at the end of the season, when stores simply want to get rid of items and, as a result, mark them down heavily. The items will still be wearable next season, and you will have saved a lot of money without doing much work. Re-Examine Existing Insurance Policies. An insurance company is not liable to call you and offer lower rates. However, a consumer often finds his or her company is willing to lower rates for those who initiate the conversation. For example, motorists who have gone a significant amount of time since their last speeding ticket or traffic accident can often renegotiate their auto insurance policies and earn a lower rate. Some companies will automatically lower these rates, while others need some prodding. Oftentimes, the threat of cancellation is enough to motivate a company to reduce insurance costs. But policy holders won’t know unless they try. If the company claims there’s no wiggle room, start shopping around for a new company, and don’t hesitate to jump on a more affordable policy, even if it can be a hassle to change companies and policies. Another thing to consider when examining insurance policies is if the level coverage is still necessary. For instance, men and women who opened an auto policy when their car was brand new might not want full coverage now that the car has gotten older. Reducing coverage can save significant amounts of money.
Contact Your Credit Card Provider. Credit card holders in good standing almost always have the means to saving money at their disposal. That’s because the credit card company will likely be willing to lower your interest rate if you are a customer in good standing. Lowering the interest rate can save card holders significant amounts of money, but it’s still ideal for card holders to pay off their balances each month and avoid interest accruing in the first place. When speaking with a representative of your credit card company, discuss any additional benefits the company might provide. For example, some cards have an incentive program that provides cash back on qualifying purchases, which might include groceries or airline tickets. If your card offers such incentives, take full advantage of them, just be sure to pay off the balance in full each month. Saving money is something many people insist they will start doing tomorrow. But it’s the little changes you make today that can add up to significant savings down the road. ∑
Groundhog F acts
Every February 2nd, people across the country anxiously await the groundhog's weather forecast. Should the groundhog see his shadow, it is six more weeks of winter. If the shadow goes unseen, spring will arrive ahead of schedule. For some, Groundhog Day is the only time a person actually lays eyes on the animal doing the prognosticating. But there's more to groundhogs than their ability to forecast the weather.
• Groundhogs do little in that burrow during their winter rest. They go into profound hibernation, where their metabolic rates and their body temperatures drop considerably. Many groundhogs begin to come out of hibernation naturally around early to mid February. • The scientific name of the groundhog is Marmota monax. • Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, are closely related to squirrels and can climb trees and swim. • Groundhogs are herbivores, mostly feeding on whatever plant material they can fi nd. On occasion, groundhogs will scavenge for and eat insects. PAGE 34
• The burrows made by the animals have several chambers and different entrances and exits. • On average, a groundhog will live between 3 to 6 years in the wild. In captivity, a groundhog can live to around age 10. • Groundhogs are often mistaken for other animals. In fact, the "gopher" that was seen in the film "Caddyshack" was actually a groundhog. • A groundhog can produce a high-pierced whistle when frightened, which has earned it the nickname "whistlepig." • Groundhog fur is not particularly thick or warm, so the animal has never really been prized for its coat for clothing. ∑

FEBRUARY 2013
February is the time when we seek appropriate ways of expressing our love for those closest to us. Why not rekindle the romance with your home at the same time? Flowers, candy or jewelry might not get you very far, but asking these three questions is going to show you care:
1
How is your home feeling? It’s often hard to get fresh air into our homes during the winter, meaning pollutants can get trapped inside. If your home has poor indoor air quality you can help it feel better. Limit the use of products containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in common household products, such as cleansers and paint. Consider adding a mechanical ventilation system to provide a controlled source of fresh air to your home. It can help manage indoor pollutants and excess indoor moisture.
2
Is your home warm and comfortable? Conventional fiberglass insulation is like a wool sweater on a winter day. It might look warm and fuzzy, but it won’t stop cold air from passing through. Conduct an energy audit of your home to spot key sources of air leakage, especially around windows and doors and through the attic. Consider installing spray foam insulation in your home. It can create an air barrier and help control air leakage, energy loss and airborne pollutants.
3
Is your home nice and dry? Indoor moisture can accumulate in the winter months, leading to a musty smell, condensation on windows and even to mold. Make sure bathroom fans and kitchen hoods are hooked up and working. Use proper ventilation to the outdoors when showering or cooking. Limit the use of humidifiers. Set up a dehumidifier in damp areas inside the home, like the basement. ∑ FEBRUARY 2013

OUCH!
SIMPLE
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! PAGE 36

The Triceratops is a quadruped, that is, their anatomy was such that they needed to use all four legs to walk. Just South of I-90 is the town of Newcastle. This area once was completely covered by water. One thing unique about the area is you can find knowledgeable locals about and you can go out and find pre-historic sharks teeth. They are brought to the surface by ants as they dig their colonies. Other fossils of aquatic life have also been found in the sedimentary rock at various places around the area. It is a pretty unique experience to find sharks teeth lying on the surface around ant hills. Collectors must have permission from landowners to look for and collect fossils from private land. It is illegal to collect fossils from tribal lands without permission from the tribal authorities. For permission to hunt along highway right-of-ways contact the nearest
Department of Transportation Office. Wyoming is a fossil hunter’s paradise and there are several digs throughout the state. A company has been formed for the lay person that wants to find fossils: “Dinosaur Safaris, Inc.” Located at 1602 U.S. Hwy 14E, Shell, Wyoming. No previous field experience is needed to attend digs; however, participants should be in good physical health in order to work under rugged
conditions. It’s a fun way to have family time and experience what fossil and dinosaur digs are all about. All bookings should be made through Two Guys Fossils at 1-800-fossils or 1-800-367-7457. New Law for Passing on Two-Lane Roads in Wyoming
According to “Trooper Talk” a publication of the Wyoming Highway Patrol Association: A new law approved by the 2012 Legislature has gone into effect that allows drivers to exceed the speed limit by up to 10 mph to pass a vehicle traveling under the speed limit on some two-lane roads in Wyoming. The law applies only to two-lane roads that have a posted speed limit of 50 mph or higher and applies only to passenger cars, pickups and motorcycles, and only if they are not towing a trailer. “As an example, on a two-lane highway with a posted speed limit of 65 mph, you are allowed to pass if the vehicle you are passing is going slower than the speed limit,” Wyoming Highway Patrol Col. John Butler said. “While passing that vehicle, you are allowed to exceed the posted speed limit only up to 10 mph, and then you are required to return to your lane of travel as soon as practicable.” The law is designed to alleviate traffic congestion on some two-lane highways in Wyoming, and allow drivers to get around slow-moving vehicles safely.
PAGE 38
“The law does not allow you to do this without doing it safely, and that is our message to drivers,” Butler said. “ Even though this law allows you to exceed the speed limit to pass, you still can’t do that unless you are doing so safely.” The law likely will require some officer discretion to enforce, particularly because it only applies when the vehicle being passed is driving below the posted speed limit. Also, if the vehicle being passed is going under the speed limit, but the passing vehicle exceeds the limit by more than 10 mph, the passing driver can be cited for exceeding the posted limit. “The big factor here is safety,” Butler said “Just because we have a law in place now that allows you to exceed the posted

speed limit to pass a vehicle not traveling at that limit, does not mean that you just go out and do so without due regard for the safety of the roadway. It’s even more critical now that you really pay attention while driving on two-lane roads in Wyoming.” ∑

He walked it up the stairs with a smile. Allison said: “Oh, it’s that time already? Deary me, the hours flee, don’t they honey?” Nathan cocked an eyebrow: “Hmm?” “I wasn’t talking to you, young man,” and she pulled several bills from her purse and laid them in the leather Mini Banana Blueberry Streusel Coffee Cakes check-holder. Nathan blinked, then said: “I’ll be right Makes 8 to 12 Individual Coffee Cakes back with your change,” and headed back to the kitchen even more perplexed. On the way down, he stopped again at the hostess podium: “Hey Tam, this Allison lady you sat in my section…have you seen the guy she’s here with? Like, I keep looking, but I can never catch him. He must smoke a lot or something.” Tammy smiled sadly. “There isn’t anybody else.” “But she got the Valentine’s special—” “I know. She does that every year.” Nathan let that sink in before replying with a crack in his voice: “By herself?” “Who else? I don’t think she’s ever been with a man. Look at her.” “Is that right.” Tammy shrugged. “She seems happy. Tips well.” “Yeah…” Nathan shook his head. And happy Valentine’s Day!” ½ teaspoon baking soda “Yes…happy, uh…happy Valentine’s Day.” 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Allison didn’t seem to hear. She stood from the table, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg still staring ahead as though someone were there, a stupid ½ teaspoon salt smile on her face. “I thought so, too,” she said, and then 1 cup fresh blueberries laughed, before turning back to the waiter: “Blake says ¼ cup chopped walnuts you did an excellent job tonight, dear.
