Transform Trash Into New And Useful Items According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate around 4.6 pounds of trash per person, per day. Sixty-five percent of that trash comes from personal residences, and more than half of that trash ends up buried in landfills.

Handling trash is a mammoth task, and one of the easiest ways to tackle such a task is to reduce the amount of garbage we produce. Turning some trash into useful items is one way to effectively manage waste, and many items that typically find their way into landfills can be turned into new tools.

resources. Scores of craft projects can be made from jars. Jars with lids can be repurposed into storage containers for home improvement and craft supplies. Such jars also can be used to store other foods.

Books In an era of ebooks and digital news, more and more books are finding their way into landfills. But books can be turned into decorative items. Gluing or attaching books together makes for an interesting storage shelf that can hold newer books or other items. Stacked and secured books can be transformed into a conversation piece, such as a side or coffee table. Hollow out a niche inside of the pages of a book to use as a treasure chest or to store jewelry you’d like to keep hidden.

Jewelry Various items can be repurposed into jewelry after their initial use. Bracelets can be made from discarded electronic components or recycled paper. Even plastic bread clips can be gathered and strung together for an eclectic looking piece of jewelry.

Old clothes

Glass bottles and jars Even though glass items are regularly recycled, it’s possible to repurpose glass containers around the house. Empty wine bottles and jars can make lovely candleholders. Pair glass items with a soy candle and cast delicate light on surroundings without using any other

Many people donate their old clothes to the needy, and such gestures help support charitable efforts that benefit the less fortunate. But old clothes also can be turned into may different items, even by those people with only minimal sewing skills. Use cotton, linen or even polyester clothes to create tote bags or wine caddies. Turn discarded clothes into items for doll dress-up. Or, use fabric from clothes to make slipcovers for throw pillows. Small

swatches of fabric can be sewn together for change purses or to hold mobile phones.

Plastic bottles Trimming plastic bottles into different shapes creates possibilities for various storage containers. Turn an empty shampoo bottle into a device charging station that hangs from an outlet, keeping charging cords tidy. Or trim a plastic bottle to form a phone holder that can be attached to a bicycle. Empty milk containers can be turned into indoor terrariums or to start seedlings before spring planting.

Paper Paper is another household item that need not find its way into landfills. Scraps of paper can be bound together to form note pads, and documents can be printed on the back of previously used pieces of paper to fuel conservation efforts. Shredded paper can be used as filler for mailing packages or as decorative confetti inside of gift bags. It also can be used to stuff dolls and toys made from recycled fabric. So many items are deemed trash and taken for granted. But before tossing items into the garbage, consider how they can be upcycled into useful new products.

New Furnace? Don’t Shut Heat Registers Q: In a recent column, you advised readers to shut heating registers in unused rooms to save energy. However, that may not be completely correct. I recently had a highefficiency furnace installed. The technician told me not to shut off heating registers in unused rooms, as it could damage the furnace. So, shutting the registers doesn’t always apply if you have a new furnace. -Sandy, via e-mail A: Thanks for the update! I looked into guidelines for newer, high-efficiency forcedair furnaces and found that, indeed, HVAC experts recommend against arbitrarily shutting off registers in unused rooms. There are a number of reasons for this. The newer furnaces are configured to heat your entire home’s square footage in the most efficient way possible. Start shutting off registers and that setup no longer works, as the parameters of the system has been changed. Shutting off several registers can affect the blower motor in particular, according to the Energy Vanguard (www.energyvanguard. com) blog post “Can You Save Money by Closing HVAC Vents in Unused Rooms.” Newer systems feature both registers and air return ducts in each room. Shut off the register, and the air return is affected as well, increasing air pressure and forcing the blower to work harder to circulate warm air back into the house. Air ducts in newer systems also are not normally sealed, the blog notes. So when the return air pressure goes up, air begins to escape from the duct system itself, forcing the blower to work harder to draw enough air to heat. Low airflow over other components of a high-efficiency system can cause problems, too. The heating coils actually can get too hot, as can the heat exchanger, increasing the risk that it could crack -- releasing exhaust gases, including carbon monoxide, into your home. So, does that mean heating registers should never, ever be shut? The answer to this is to talk to your HVAC contractor. While Energy Vanguard notes that one or two temporarily closed registers shouldn’t negatively affect the system, it’s better to ask than to wonder. What if you’re not sure if you have a highefficiency system? What if you have an older heating system, or a zoned system? Then it’s time to schedule a checkup with a heating and air-conditioning professional, who can tell you the best way to manage your particular heating system.

Chocolate Historically More Than Just Food

Many cannot resist chocolate, that beloved creamy, sweet confection derived from cocoa beans, milk and sugar. All over the world people love to indulge in chocolate, especially come Valentine’s Day. According to data from Leatherhead Food Research, Switzerland consumes more chocolate per capita than any country in the world. Ireland, the United Kingdom, Austria and Belgium round out the top five. Despite its apparent popularity in Europe, chocolate was first popularized among the Olmecs of Mexico, who used the cocoa beans more than 3,500 years ago. However, it wasn’t until the last 200 years that chocolate turned into the sweet treat that is known and loved today.

Aztecs believed cocoa had aphrodisiac properties, and chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylamine, which is released naturally in the body when a person falls in love. The aroma of chocolate can induce relaxation, and chocolate also contains dopamine, a natural painkiller. While chocolate is now used primarily as a food, over the years it has had many other uses — some of which are quite unique. Here are some of the many ways people have used chocolate throughout history. • Money: The Mayans once used cocoa beans as a form of currency, as did the Aztecs. In this instance, money actually did grow on trees. • Dental health: Arman Sadeghpour, a researcher at Tulane University, says an extract of cocoa powder could be an effective alternative to using fluoride. Chocolate-enhanced toothpaste may be the next big thing. • Fuel: Chocolate has been used to feed bacteria that produce hydrogen, which can be used as a clean power source. • Medicine: Chocolate is full of antioxidants, which serve all sorts of disease-fighting benefits in the body. Dark chocolate provides the greatest number of health benefits, as it contains flavonols, which stimulate the brain and support the circulatory system. • Fashion: Designers and chocolatiers

worldwide collaborate to make sweet outfits at Le Salon du Chocolat’s fashion shows. • Special effects: Before the days of computer-simulated special effects, moviemakers had to employ other methods to produce realistic results. Legend has it that Bosco brand chocolate syrup was used as blood in the famed shower scene in the classic horror movie “Psycho.” Bosco was used because it showed up great in black and white. • Skin care: Cocoa butter, a component of chocolate, has long been used to moisturize and soothe dry skin. Many spas now incorporate organic chocolate into their healing and beauty therapies. • Perfume: Chocolate produces more than 400 distinct smells and has been used to make perfume more fragrant. • Mood enhancement: Chocolate may help to improve mood, as it is a mild stimulant and can affect serotonin levels, which govern those feel-good feelings, in the brain. • Postage: In 2013, Belgium’s post office sold limited-edition stamps that were varnished with 40 percent of a cocoa product. The stamps smelled and tasted like chocolate. Chocolate has been tempting taste buds for thousands of years. It’s also been used in some very unique ways, even if, come Valentine’s Day, the majority of people would be content just to eat it.

Exploring The Connection Between The Heart And Love Hearts and Valentine’s Day are forever intertwined. One of the most recognizable symbols of love is the modest heart, and hearts adorn candy boxes and cookies while paper hearts are pinned to doors or windows as a symbol of Valentine’s Day. Young valentines may share candy hearts printed with silly sentiments. A symbolic heart bears no resemblance to an anatomical heart, and yet it is used to represent the deepest feelings of affection a person can share. Some may wonder just how the emotions of love became tied up in the shape of a heart, even though it’s widely known that the brain, and not the heart, governs affections. In ancient times, people believed that the heart was the center of all human emotions. Since the heart is prominently located in the center of the chest and the middle of the body, it became the cornerstone of human feelings. Love is considered to be one of the most profound and strongest human emotions, therefore it was reasoned that the feeling must emanate from the heart. Surprisingly, the heart has not always

been the only organ associated with love. During the Middle Ages, the heart was deemed a useless organ. Followers of the Greek physician Galen theorized that the liver actually was the seat of the soul and love. The first depictions of a symbolic heart date back to the 11th century, when the heart was drawn to resemble a pinecone held upside down with the point facing upward. The scalloped heart that is more familiar today first arose in the early 14th century. Around the same time, the heart was depicted with the point facing downward and the indentation at the base. Naturally, as time passed and more was learned about human anatomy, it became obvious that the brain was the seat of all emotion and thought processes. However, as the brain was something intangible in a living body in ancient times, and the beating heart could be much more readily monitored — with a pulse rate speeding up when a person is excited or aroused — it’s easy to see how the link between the heart and love has endured.

Although the human heart is not bright red like symbolic hearts, that was the color chosen. Red has long been associated with passion, so it made sense to depict the heart in a bright red hue. Many other theories have been offered regarding the symbolic heart and its representation of love. While there’s no definitive correlation between love and hearts, the heart has become an accepted symbol of the emotion and the season of romance.

The Relationship Between Paint And Mood Painting is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to transform the look of a space. The colors homeowners choose for their walls can give rooms their own unique feel and even affect the moods of the people within them. Finding the right shade for a bedroom or kitchen involves more than just selecting the first color that catches your eye. Design experts and psychologists alike say it may be worthwhile to choose a color that helps you feel good rather than just following design trends. The paint color you pick may add energy to a space or create a tranquil retreat where you can unwind at the end of the day.

cold and stark, so balance out blue with some warmer accents.

Orange Many people do not immediately consider bright orange for their homes, but when used as an accent shade, orange can really brighten up a home. Orange is considered a shade that expands creativity and imparts a youthful appeal to a space. Consider an orange accent wall or a burst of color with orange throw pillows. If pumpkin orange is a little too bold for you, tone it down by choosing a more pastel, peachy hue, which is equally warm and energizing.

Red Red stimulates energy and appetite, which is why the shade is so popular in restaurants and home dining spaces. Red is a good choice for social gathering rooms but may not be the wisest choice for a bedroom, as the color may prove overstimulating.

Green

Blue To create a spa-like environment and a more serene space, look to shades of blue in soft variations. Cool blues are soothing colors that can help lower stress levels and promote sleep. That’s why blue is a frequent fixture in bedrooms and bathrooms. Just be advised that too much blue can make a room appear

Green can evoke composure and tranquility and works in any room of the house. Since green is the primary color of nature, it also works well for those people who want to bring some of the outdoors inside and work with the fresh starts and new growth that green can inspire. To make green feel less subdued and sleepy, work with its complementary opposite, red, by using a few bold red accents here and there to balance out the tranquility of green.

Purple People have long related purple to royalty, and this dramatic color can add a formal, regal

aspect to a home depending on the hue. Purple also may help stimulate the creative side of the brain. In paler shades of lavender, purple can seem almost ethereal and spiritual. Some designers suggest avoiding purple in a bedroom because that is a place you want your brain to rest rather than be stimulated.

Yellow Few colors are more vibrant than yellow, which can help stimulate conversation and make thoughts more focused. A luminous shade of yellow is an ideal way to make any space more welcoming and bright. Just use it sparingly, as too much yellow may not be a good thing. Yellow accents mixed with touches of purple can offer the balance needed to prevent yellow rooms from overwhelming residents and guests. Home decorators should keep in mind that colors can be blended to create the desired environment. A color scheme based on complementary colors, or those opposite on the color wheel, may fit. Otherwise, analogous color schemes, or those colors that are next to one another on the color wheel, can create a variation that suits your design needs.

Romantic Films To Watch Together This Valentine’s Day

Couples celebrate Valentine’s Day in many different ways. For some the idea of dinner out followed by a stroll arm-in-arm seems the epitome of romance, while others may want to go out dancing or engage in a favorite hobby. Valentine’s Day also can be a romantic endeavor if a couple chooses to spend time alone with each other watching a romantic movie. The following are a handful of love-inspired movies that can add a special something to Valentine’s Day festivities.

Reynolds) to marry her. Their tumultuous relationship involves a trip to Alaska to meet his family.

• An Affair to Remember: Romantic melodramatic master Cary Grant falls in love with Deborah Kerr aboard a cruise ship while they are traveling with other people. They agree to meet at the top of the Empire State Building in six months if they have ended their relationships and are ready to commit to each other. Grant makes it to the rendezvous spot, but an injured Kerr never shows as Grant assumes she has rejected the proposal. • Say Anything: In pursuit of a woman he believes is out of his social league, Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) creates hope for the underdog in us all. The movie inspired teens to raise their boom box radios over their heads and blast romantic tunes to illustrate their love. • The Wedding Singer: This quirky movie about a wedding singer who falls for a banquet waitress highlights the importance of loving each other for what makes you unique.

• The Notebook: Author Nicholas Sparks has a way of taking the everyday experiences in a person’s life and making them relatable and heartbreaking in a pluck-at-yourheartstrings sort of way. His novel “The Notebook” won the hearts of many and seemed a natural to be adapted to film. Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, the movie illustrates how love can last through the years and even survive an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. • The Proposal: In order to remain in the country, a demanding New Yorkbased book editor (Sandra Bullock) asks her brow-beaten assistant (Ryan

• Once: Attraction between the main characters comes by way of creative musical collaboration. Music proves to be an aphrodisiac, making the film and the song “Falling Slowly” from its score so popular. This romantic tale helped take the film from the big screen to the Broadway stage. • West Side Story: “West Side Story” is yet another homage to “Romeo and Juliet.” But the film made Shakespeare’s tragic love story relatable to audiences of the 1960s. • My Best Friend’s Wedding: Julianne (Julia Roberts) is called on to be the “best man” for her friend’s (Dermot Mulroney) wedding. Only when the wedding planning is underway does Julianne realize she is in love with her friend and needs to get him to fall for

Page 29

her instead.

• Never Been Kissed: A reporter goes undercover at a high school to discover something controversial and ends up being the subject of her story when she falls in love with her English teacher. • Harold and Maude: A man in his twenties and a much older woman begin a romantic relationship and challenge social norms along the way. • Annie Hall: Winner of four Academy Awards, “Annie Hall” follows a comedian who is trying to maintain his relationship with a woman. • Bridget Jones’ Diary: A modern adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” the movie tells the tale of a self-conscious woman who finds love in a man that seems to be her polar opposite. • Ten Things I Hate About You: Filmmakers reinvented “The Taming of the Shrew” in this teen comedy starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. • Casablanca: No romantic movie list would be complete without this wartime drama. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are in top form in this movie of chance meetings. • The Princess Bride: Girl meets boy, girl detests boy, girl truly loves boy, and then girl loses boy. This fairy tale shares the purity of true love and happily ever after.

Softer Water, Better You. by Kevin Bennett

Is your water harder on you than speech therapy on Sylvester Stallone? After a shower or bath, does a thin soapy film coat everything? Do you find your hair dull, your skin irritable? Are your clothes more rough and uncomfortable than you remember? Has basic hygiene become a dreaded chore? You’re not alone or beyond hope, and hard water can be softened as easy as dialing a phone number. Western Water Conditioning of Gillette has made it their mission to make it easy for anyone to enjoy the benefits of conditioned water. According to westernwater.net, here’s how it works: “The most common method of treating for water hardness is to use an ion exchange water softener. A water softener removes hardness by passing water through water softening resin. As water containing hardness, made up of calcium and magnesium ions (atoms with an electrical charge) passes through the resin, the calcium and magnesium are attracted to the resin and exchanged for a chemically equivalent amount of sodium or potassium.” The result of all that technical information is softer water that leaves skin & hair more beautiful, clothes softer, and your bathroom cleaner. The process is affordable, too. Western Water Conditioning offers rentals as well as rent-to-own deals. (Though if you’d like to buy, you’re more than welcome to!) So give your skin a break! Give the linoleum a break; and let your clothes be as soft as they were when they were new. Just dial Western Water Conditioning and watch your life get comfy!

Greeting Card History

Billions of greeting cards are sold and exchanged each year, and Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to give a loved one a greeting card.

The Greeting Card Association says 145 million Valentine’s Day units are sold in the United States each year. The association says seven out of 10 surveyed card buyers consider greeting cards to be essential to them, and are passing on the greeting card tradition to younger generations. Though the tradition of exchanging greeting cards is still going strong, few may know the history and etiquette behind this timetested tradition. Greeting card history The tradition of exchanging greeting cards can be traced back to ancient China, where people exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Over time, greeting cards were exchanged for various reasons, and by the 1850s greeting cards were transformed from handmade, expensive purchases to relatively affordable means of personal communication and well-wishing.

2202 S. Emerson Ave. - $147,900

Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular since the Middle Ages, when they were sung or spoken aloud to special people. Cards were popularized in the 1400s, and the oldest known Valentine created during this era is on display in the British Museum in London. Valentines were initially made by hand, but by the end of the 1800s, the process of making cards was handled by machinery. Esther Howland, an American printer and artist, was one of the first to publish and sell valentines in the United States. Yet it took a few more years for a card company to manufacture and distribute valentines.

display a card, most people keep them for five to seven days. Some special occasion cards, such as milestone birthdays or religious rites of passage, may warrant holding on to the card for posterity. However, the length of time cards are kept is entirely at the discretion of the recipient.

Keeping cards

Be sure your card list is continually updated with new addresses and contact information. If you do so regularly, it’s easier to send cards when the time comes.

Sending cards requires a little know-how. Start out with a high-quality card to show that you value the recipient. If you’re taking the time to send a greeting card, make sure it looks like you put some effort into its selection.

Address cards by hand and sign them personally. Although desktop printers can make fast work of card mailings, writing things out by hand is a special touch that indicates you care. Personal greeting cards for close friends and family members may also deserve an extra special touch, like including a custom message or a photograph.

You will find that your thirst is sated better, and you are not as “thirsty” for that sugar water!” -F.E. in South Carolina • Research says that the best time of day to exercise is in the morning, but the truth is that the best time for YOU to exercise is when you will go through with it. So, try out different times of the day, and when you find one that fits, schedule it in your daily planner and block the time out at least three times per week. • “My neighbor makes this recipe called firecrackers. It involves saltine crackers, oil and a bunch of spices mixed up to delicious results. It also results in a lot of cracker pieces. I always take the crumbs home and use them as croutons for salads. So delicious.” -- J.L. in Florida • If you’re leaving your home for a few days, make sure you don’t turn off the heater altogether. Set it at a low 55 degrees F, and open up the cabinets that have pipes exposed. This way, air will circulate, and it won’t get too cold to allow the pipes to burst. Have a neighbor turn your faucets to a trickle if below-freezing weather is expected.

Vision Myths Cleared Up Vision can easily be taken for granted, but when a person’s sense of sight is compromised, the results can present a number of challenges and affect quality of life in some profound ways. Millions of people rely on corrective lenses to see clearly. The National Eye Institute says more than 150 million Americans use corrective eyewear, spending more than $15 billion annually on contact lenses and glasses. Those who must rely on glasses and contact lenses may wonder if there was something they could have done to protect their vision. Myths and misconceptions about vision have prevailed through generations, but many of these myths are to be taken with a grain of salt. Myth: Sitting too close to the television will hurt your eyes. Fact: Being too close to the screen will not harm your vision. In fact, it could be a coping mechanism for nearsightedness and a symptom of existing vision problems. If you find yourself sitting close to the television, speak with an eye doctor. Myth: Reading in dim light will be harmful to your vision. Fact: Good lighting can prevent eye fatigue and headaches. However, working in dim light will not harm your eyes. Myth: Eating carrots improves your vision. Fact: A healthy diet helps the body maintain its eyes. But eating an abundance of carrots will not give your eyes superpowers. Vitamin A deficiency may lead to poor vision, but eating a lot of the vitamin by way of carrots will not enhance your vision. Myth: Using corrective lenses will make your eyes dependent on them.

Fact: Eyesight naturally deteriorates as we age. Corrective lenses do not change the physiology of the eye; they just make it easier to see. Similarly, not wearing glasses if you need them will not make vision deteriorate faster.

Myth: Wearing someone else’s glasses will hurt your eyes. Fact: Wearing someone else’s glasses forces your eyes to work harder, which can cause fatigue or headache. But once the glasses are taken off, your eyes will automatically readjust, leaving no permanent damage. Myth: Crossing your eyes will make them get stuck like that. Fact: Telling a joke and crossing your eyes for a few laughs will not result in them getting stuck. They will return to their normal place after you tell your latest knee-slapper. Myth: Foods and medicines will not affect vision. Fact: Using artificial sweeteners can make your eyes more sensitive to light. Also, certain medicines, like antibiotics, high blood pressure drugs, contraceptives, and diabetic medications, can make the eyes more sensitive to light. Myth: All eye professionals are medical doctors. Fact: Only an ophthalmologist is an actual medical doctor with special training to diagnose and treat diseases of the eye. Optometrists and opticians are trained in some aspects of eye care but cannot prescribe medications nor treat diseases of the eye.

Wednesday February 25th

7:30 P.M.

910 north Gurley avenue, Gillette

Headliner Talon Saucerman

Just a good ole boy from South Dakota. He uses his redneck logic as a little fish in a big pond. Moved to the big city to save the family farm. Seeking fame, fortune and cheap whiskey along the way.

Featuring

Heath Arthur

Always looking for the funny side of things, Heath Arthur brings his unique, and sometimes snarky, perspective to every show. He uses his charming, storytelling style to point out the humor of everyday life. His wit and genuine likeability have made him a favorite at clubs and showcases, as well as churches, youth groups, corporate events, and cruise ships. Heath won the 2014 New Faces Contest at the world famous Comedy Works in Denver, CO. He also won the 2013 Loonee’s Comedy Dojo and has been a finalist in Comedy Works’ Clean Comedy Contest in both 2013 and 2014. Heath’s TV “appearances” include a magical one-liner on TLC’s Extreme Couponing and an up-close of him applauding on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars. In the summer of 2014, he had the opportunity to work the Duck Commander Cruise with the Robertsons of A&E’s Duck Dynasty, and as a result, will be working with them again on the 2015 cruise. Born a Cajun, growing up in the company of rednecks, and finally finding a home with hippies, Heath is currently being raised by his wife and 3 kids in Colorado.

Valentine’s Day For The Kids Although Valentine’s Day may be geared toward adults, children are quite drawn to the celebration as well. Perhaps it’s the promise of candy or chocolate that gets their attention, but Valentine’s Day annually appeals to the younger set. Some couples opt to leave children in the capable hands of a babysitter come Valentine’s Day and enjoy the evening solo. But for those who want to include youngsters in their fun, they can explore the many enjoyable and clever crafts and other activities available. Learning Games Valentine’s Day can be turned into a learning opportunity for children. One idea is to create an “Attracting Love” game that illustrates the power of magnets and the laws of attraction. Fill an empty glass jar with various items made into heart shapes. These can include small pieces of pipe cleaner, paper clips, paper, and even aluminum foil hearts. Put the top on the jar and shake up the contents. Let children guess which items will be attracted to a magnet, then have them test their theory with a strong magnet rubbed on the outside of the jar. See which hearts are attracted to the magnet. Other learning games can include matching or finding the differences between pictures, counting paper hearts or making recipes of scented modeling dough. Dessert fun Invite youngsters into the kitchen to try their hands at different recipes, making sure that they have a chance to sample their handiwork afterward. Faux chocolate truffles made

with chocolate sandwich cookies can be a tasty treat for little hands. Start by mashing up some Oreo® cookies, then add them to a bowl with one 8-ounce package of cream cheese. Mix until everything is incorporated into a sticky batter. Truffles can be made into balls or heart shapes. For children celebrating Valentine’s Day and winter fun, turn the truffles into edible snowmen. Dip the truffles into melted chocolate or colored candy melts to coat. Place on a wax paper-covered cookie sheet and refrigerate for an hour, or until the truffles are firm. Crafts Children can have fun cutting out cupids, making coloring pages or doing just about any other Valentine-inspired craft, like making their own cards. Another craft idea is to write secret love notes with invisible ink. Lemon juice can be used as invisible ink. Have children write a message by dipping a cotton swab or their finger in lemon juice and then writing words on a white piece of paper. Once the papers have dried, an adult can reveal the message by placing the paper in front of a heat source, such as an iron or a light bulb. The message will magically appear and reveal those secret sentiments. Children can get crafty by making gifts for the special people in their lives. Combine the concept of valentines with the ambiance of a candle. For an even safer alternative, opt for an LEDflame candle instead of traditional candles. Kids can glue foam conversation hearts, sold at many craft stores, to the outside of the candle. Wrap the middle of the candle with ribbon, and they’ve just created an easy, heartfelt gift.

Kids’ dinner Encourage the next generation of chefs to create culinary masterpieces, which they can then serve to family members or friends. Children can even prepare dinner as a token of appreciation to their parents. Plan recipes with kids in advance, but look for age-appropriate menu ideas, particularly those that will not require much use of the stovetop or other dangerous kitchen appliances. Kids can always do the prep work and then ask an adult to put the food into the oven for cooking. One easy idea is to create heart-shaped hamburger sliders and Valentine-colored mashed potatoes. Use red potatoes with the skin on to create the potato mash. The sliders can be shaped by hand or using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and the holiday presents many opportunities for children to share in the fun and festivities.

Psalm 91, King James Version

1

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust . 3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4 He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust : his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. 5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; 6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. 8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. 9 Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. 11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. 12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. 13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet . 14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high , because he hath known my name. 15 He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. 16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
