Leaving cookies and milk for Santa Claus is a Christmas Eve tradition. Children regularly place a dish of cookies and a glass of milk by the tree on Christmas Eve so that Santa has enough energy to complete all of his gift-giving before kids wake up on Christmas morning. The tradition of leaving cookies out on Christmas Eve may trace its origins to Saint Nicholas. On the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6, children would leave food and drink for the saint and any at-
tendants. The treats would be exchanged for gifts. While that’s one theory behind the tradition, others think it is linked to the history of the Christmas tree and the edible decorations that adorn it. Santa would snack on the ornaments. Even after edible decorations gave way to inedible ornaments, the tradition of leaving a snack for Santa remained. Whatever the origins behind the tradition, millions of children dutifully leave milk and cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve.

Books A 2015 survey from the Pew Research Center found that 69 percent of adults age 65 and over acknowledged reading at least one book in the previous 12 months. That makes books a good bet for shoppers who don’t know what to get their 65-and-over loved ones this holiday season. But shoppers might want to opt for more traditional print books rather than e-books, as the survey found that only 15 percent of readers age 65 and over had read an e-book in the previous 12 months. Gym membership According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, more than 80 percent of adults do not meet the guidelines for aerobic and musclestrengthening activities. That can be especially troubling for seniors, who are at greater risk for osteoporosis, a medical condition in which age-related tissue loss contributes to brittle, fragile bones. Physical activity, including muscle-strengthening activities like weight training, can help combat osteoporosis. Family members stuck on what to get aging loved ones may want to consider gifting a membership to a local gym. Many gyms offer heavily discounted memberships
to seniors, and such gyms may even offer senior fitness classes at no additional cost. Travel gifts Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a
possibility, some new luggage or a Global Hotel CardTM sponsored by Orbitz®, a gift card that can be redeemed at 70,000 hotels across the globe, is sure to please. Family time Shoppers who are especially stuck on what to get seniors for Christmas can just resolve to spend more time with their elderly loved ones. The Future Is Bright
All up and down the west coast, metropolitan areas threw up a lament Tuesday, November 8th, 2016. They’ve continued their sore losing for quite a while after the election; but that just goes to show how out of touch metropolitan areas are when it comes to the rest of the country. But don’t be too hard on them; a lot of them don’t even realize how deluded they’ve become. There’s an insular nature to city life, and a lot of that results from locals not having the resources to transcend a given living situation for years—decades, even. Given that everything such individuals think they want is within a mile or two of them, their desire to expand horizons eventually dissipates, and they soon become satisfied in stagnancy, accepting public transit and authority over self-actualized critical action. So when Donald Trump won the election in 2016, it’s no surprise it shook their insular world to its foundations. It’s also no wonder a hew and cry swept through the streets! The thing is: it isn’t justifiable. Wyoming had no riots when Obama took office for eight years and gutted our economy. We didn’t burn effigies of Barrack Hussein, march in the streets, or call those who voted for him terrorists. No, we did what Wyoming natives do: we took our licking, and kept on ticking. We knuckled down and kept working—and thank God we did! Because there is light at the end of the tunnel. If you haven’t read Donald Trump’s 100-day plan, look that up with a Google search and be heartened. He has full plans to restore energy production not only to regions already involved in it, but to new areas as well. According to local real estate professional Harry Kimbrough, “We’re looking at out-of-state investors sizing up Wyoming, expecting a resurgence in our economy after the inauguration, possibly even beforehand. And now we have the lower interest rates bringing more people out of the local market looking into doing some investment as well. Morale has increased big time.” And well it should! As it says in the Bible, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.” So rejoice, because righteousness has taken the day—for a time at least.
Economic increases have also been seen in the housing market. According to Kimbrough, “Well, the housing market is pretty steady as far as sales go, however from February the sales are up 54.5%. We’re seeing some recovery. The interest rates are still down. We have a lot of inventory there where people have made significant price reductions due to their need to sell and move onto another phase of life.” Whether or not that trend remains constant remains to be seen—since morale has increased, some folks may want to retain their stake in the housing market a little while longer; but whatever happens, said market is doing better, is more amenable to those looking to buy, and is overall getting better as regards the local economy. In the realms of energy, the heart and soul of Wyoming’s economic infrastructure, Harry says: “Coal mines are hiring people back; one coal mine got a new contract, another one is putting on a second shift. There is a local company called Atlas Carbon; they’ve got a fifteen million dollar loan from the state loan and investment board so they could double their production. And then we’re seeing new oil wells popping up in the countryside.” If things keep getting better, more are sure to come. Things are looking up beyond the
energy and housing markets as well. Harry is optimistic with new businesses coming to town and the new Rib & Chop grand opening on November 15th was a good start. Though difficult times have forced some excellent businesses into closing their doors, America’s regime change is ushering in a new era of prosperity to Campbell County. It will only be a little while before things are buzzing along efficiently and productively as in boom times. Be wise with this prosperity, and take measures to preserve your way of life. Hopefully this lasts a long, long time—but the cities are losing their minds, and as George Carlin so aptly said, “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” If that doesn’t describe the post-election rioting, I don’t know what does. While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperatures at the North Pole are less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North Pole as home to Santa Claus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its origins all the way back to the third century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.

The History Of Holiday Lights Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in various ways. Certain individuals may be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete. Others may get their holiday jollies by making sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights. Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house. The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. Those candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century. Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eightmile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display. The concept of electric holiday lights took
a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multicolored electric light bulbs. In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights

Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long. Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take these steps to prolong the life of their trees. • Protect the tree on the way home. Your tree might be vulnerable to damage as you transport it from the farm to your living room. Unwrapped trees placed atop vehicles can be dried out by the wind. Prevent wind damage by wrapping the tree if you plan to place it atop your vehicle. If possible, lay the tree in the bed of a pickup truck and close the cover over the bed. If you don’t have access to a pickup truck but can use a minivan or SUV to transport your tree, see if the tree fits inside your vehicle. If it doesn’t, wrap it tightly in a blanket or another form of cover, making sure the cover won’t blow off in the wind when you hit the open road. • Have the tree cut before you take it
off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home. Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During

the interval between being cut down and sold, trees’ vascular systems can clog and prevent the tree from getting the water it needs to survive the season. A fresh cut of the stem unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water. • Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature. • Water the tree often. Christmas trees need lots of water to make it through the season. You may notice the water in the tree stand disappears quickly when you first bring the tree home. That’s because freshly cut trees will consume more water than trees that were cut several weeks ago. As the season goes on and the tree’s vascular system begins to clog, you might not need to water the tree as much as you did when you first brought it home. But check the tree’s water stand twice per day when you first bring it home, refilling the stand with water whenever necessary. As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, retailers who use apps and mobile responsive websites to reach more customers may benefit by making a concerted effort to reach older shoppers. According to Nielsen’s Mobile Measurement, 26 percent of the more than 100 million mobile shoppers are 55 and older, while an additional 40 percent are between the ages of 25 and 44. Those figures might surprise some retailers who are quick to associate mobile shopping with digital-native Millennials. Nielsen’s Fourth-Quarter 2014 Mobile Multicultural Insights report even noted that Hispanics are more inclined to shop via mobile than non-Hispanic, white smartphone owners. Retailers may also be interested to know that more and more shoppers are turning to apps instead of websites to do their shopping. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014, Nielsen reports that 101.4 million smartphone users accessed a shopping app. By the fourth quarter of 2015, that figure had risen to 109.9 million users.

Pain d’épices Makes 1 medium loaf 1 1⁄2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 3⁄4 cup rye flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1⁄4 teaspoon sea salt 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cloves 1⁄2 teaspoon quatre épices 2⁄3 cup almonds, finely chopped 1⁄4 cup candied peel or crystallized ginger, finely chopped 3⁄4 cup flavorful honey 2 extra-large egg yolks 5 tablespoons milk 1 8 x 4 x 2 1⁄2-inch loaf pan, greased and base-lined with parchment paper Preheat the oven to 350 F. Sift both flours, baking powder, salt, and all the spices into a large bowl. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the chopped almonds and candied peel. Make a well in the center of the ingredients. Add the honey (in cold weather it is easier to measure and combine the honey if you stand the jar in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes first), egg yolks, and milk to the bowl and stir well to make a thick, heavy batter. Scrape the mixture into the prepared pan and smooth the surface. Bake for about 45 minutes, until golden and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Turn out onto a wire rack, remove the lining paper and let cool. This recipe is best eaten within 5 days, or can be frozen for up to 1 month.
