Circle J Retreat Camp, A Historical Destination For The Whole Family by Kevin Bennett

Circle J Retreat Camp is located in Tensleep Wyoming, and has been an historic destination of families and campers for decades. Managers Tim and Sandy Slater have opened it up to everybody. All are welcome at Circle J, and there's good reason! Says Sandy: “It was prayerfully intended when this land was consecrated to God that the J in the name would inspire those who walk here to always keep Jesus Christ in the center of their every thought, word, and deed.” Where Jesus is the center, the whole world is welcome! In fact, the whole world does come to Circle J. It's located in a canyon described by those who've hiked it as some sort of “canyon of Eden”. Right off highway sixteen—which, by the way, is the most scenic route there is to Yellowstone—Circle J is nestled in a beautiful canyon. People stop by from all over the world; China, Germany, Switzerland—and of course the entirety of the United States! It's a beautiful locale en route to a beautiful locale; it only makes sense that people should come from all around. Open from April to October every year, Circle J is

centrally located only 111 miles from Sheridan, 147 from Gillette, 113 from Powell, 79 from Buffalo, 71 from Thermopolis, 118 from Cody and 188 from Casper. While Circle J was initially just a kids camp, in recent years it has opened up for people of all ages. It functions now as a men and women's retreat. It's also a great place for couples to get away for a while and enjoy God's green Earth, and last year two family reunions with 100+ people made Circle J their celebration destination! Circle J can accommodate the load: there's a massive industrial kitchen centrally located on the camp's campus, which is an area replete with cottages, bunk houses, and an open air pavilion that has been electrically configured. There's even free WiFi! And if that's not enough, tent campsites are located throughout the picturesque canyon so you can really get away when you need to. Recently, Circle J has also acquired full RV hookups including electric, water, and waste-disposal; enjoy all the comforts of your mobile home and a scenic landscape to boot! There have been some great anticipated additions to Circle J, also. Like the authentic eighteen foot teepee now located on-campus. Part of Circle J's lodging, this teepee is regularly used in a bevy of celebratory events; from birthday parties to a general pow-wow with the kids. Weddings have also become increas-

ingly popular at Circle J. It's really a destination wedding venue— there's even an ad whose tagline is: “The Canyon Ridge Dream Come True For 'I Do' ”. Beyond private camping adventures, group camp options at Circle J cater to tweens, teens, and young adults. Your young ones can look forward to volleyball, baseball, tubing down Tensleep Creek, hiking up trails that sometimes stretch 600 feet up a steep hillside—advanced and beginner, of course!—and much more. Got any fishermen in your family? Some of the best fishing in Wyoming is had at Circle J Camp near Tensleep. Whether angling or fly-fishing, there's a bountiful harvest in the water. Finally, at the end of the day you can let your spirit rest with an assembly at the First Washakie Historical Chapel, an institution over 100 years old and full of deep history. (There's also an outdoor chapel for those days at camp when things just get a little over-the-top!) You may have noticed the red decorative theme? There's an apple orchard just chock-full of trees, many of them over 100 years old. This year on the 15th of October will be Circle J's biggest yearly event, Jammin in the Canyon; which includes live music, lunch, apple-bobbing, refreshing ice-cream, and apple pie—all homemade! Get out to Circle J this year and live life like God intended. From the amazingly scenic bridge that crosses Tensleep Creek on one of the many trails, to the centennial apple orchard which brings the Circle J season to a close every year, Circle J camp is a great destination. 3 Ways To Make Grilling Fish Easier Fish can be cooked in various ways. Many people bake their fish, while others are partial to broiling or frying. While fish also can be grilled, many people shy away from grilling fish out of a fear that they will overcook the meal or their fish will turn flaky and crumble over open flames. Skin prevents fish from flaking over open flames, essentially holding a fillet together while it cooks and ensuring it does not fall apart when you try to remove the fish from the grill. It was definitely a fixer-upper. The house was a steal, as far as real estate was concerned. It was a split-level with three stories and a two car garage, as well as an ample backyard; though it needed a new paint job, and the flooring required repair throughout the structure. “It’s too much,” is what Marie said after they first looked at it. “Not so fast,” said Joe. “What’s your Dad always say about a married couple doing a project together?” “Does he say anything about married couples doing a project together?” “Well, he told me it was a great way to build the relationship.” “I see. So we got married three months ago, now let’s go into debt?” “Hold on. Look. When you restore a house, you add value to it. That’s a fact. Don’t you watch the HG channel?” “Of course I do!” “Okay then!” Joe sighed. “Now my Dad had a similar project with mum. Only it wasn’t that they were restoring a house, they were upgrading the bedroom. The thing was, they needed new tile and carpet, and one section actually looked a lot better with wood—but they used Liquid Vinyl Plank, because it was less expensive and had the same appearance; plus it’s durable. Altogether they spent like five grand on flooring materials, but at the end of the day the house was worth something like twelve thousand dollars more. See, they got a return on their investment.” “But there’s no guarantee about that here!” Marie gave him a serious look. “No, but—look, the price is right, and we can make this work. Didn’t you say you liked that room the agent said was the child’s bedroom?” Marie screwed up her nose for a moment, then looked out the car window at the house and back to Joe. “Yeah, but that was just because of the closet.” Joe blinked several times, then said: “Uh, exactly—” “And it does have a nice view of the airport from here...I didn’t know Gillette looked like this. But Joe, how

That’s nothing.” “Well what about your workout equipment?” “Oh, they’ve got rubber flooring; it’s cheap, and that makes a room unique; more valuable.” Marie exhaled, then opened the latch on the car door and said, “Well let’s go have one more look.” Joe was only too happy to oblige and a month later they had purchased the property. Certainly it took some time to fix, and there were ups and downs in the process. There were squabbles, and there were laughs, but at the end of the day, Joe and Marie managed add thousands of dollars in value to their property, and not break the bank doing it.
