How to Host an Eco-conscious Holiday Event Many families anticipate holiday gatherings for months. Such gatherings bring together friends and family members who may not see one another much throughout the year. Food tends to be plentiful at holiday gatherings, so it should come as no surprise that the holiday season generates a good deal of waste. In addition, energy consumption is high during the holiday season. The United States Environmental Protection Agency says household waste generally increases by 25 percent between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day — equalling about 1 million extra tons of waste. The Worldwatch Institute states that the same period of time generates three times as much food waste as other times of the year. Making the holiday season more sustainable does not mean families must give up their cherished traditions. Here are several tips to help make your holiday celebrations a bit more eco-friendly. • Cut down on packaging. When shopping, seek items that are minimally packaged or shop at retailers that offer package-free products. Packaging accounts for a considerable portion of the trash that ends up in landfills. Shopping at local stores and craft fairs can help you avoid too much plastic packaging. • Decorate with efficient products.

Making a home look festive is part of many families’ holiday celebrations. Opt for LED holiday lights, which last longer and use a fraction of the energy of traditional lights. Use soy or beeswax candles and incorporate as many natural items, such as fresh evergreen boughs, branches and berries, as you can find in your decorations.

Reusable bags, local foods and recyclable gift wrap are just a few of the many ways to make the holiday season more eco-friendly.

• Shop smart. Shop at food stores that stock local products so foods do not have to travel great distances to reach your table. Take advantage of local farm stands and other vendors that pop up in the autumn. Remember to bring

reusable shopping bags with you on any shopping excursions so you can reduce your reliance on paper and plastic bags. • Reduce food waste. People often cook extra food for the holidays out of fear of not having enough for guests. But leftovers often end up going to waste. Use planners to determine how much food to cook for the number of guests you will be having. Keep portion sizes healthy by selecting smaller dinner plates and providing foods that are hearty and will fill guests quickly, such as rich proteins and complex carbohydrates. When the meal is done, promptly wrap up leftovers so they don’t spoil. • Use reusable dishes. Avoid paper and plastic dishes, instead opting for ones that can be used again and again. Take out your fine china or a festively patterned service set to use. Keep the dishwasher empty so that you can load it up with dirty dishes and run a full load to save even more energy. • Reuse gift wrapping and accessories. Save wrapping paper and other decorative paper products to use as gift wrap at a later date. Keep a container full of bows and ribbons that are still in good condition as well. Gift bags can often be used several times before they begin to exhibit signs of wear and tear.

Dreams of Christmas By: Kevin Bennett

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring; not even the mouse in the floorboards, or the roaches in the kitchen hordes; fighting with the ants and spiders hiding in the caulk-holes, dancing through the carpet fibers like eight-legged hairy tigers; always on the naughty list, frightening wives and scaring kids. Yes residents of olden floors have built communities of lore; the mice have tables made of plastic where they bet the evening’s snatches; chuckling high in timbers treble, in a floor that’s been disheveled. But lo, up high--a bump, a clatter! Said the spiders, “what’s the matter? Ain’t the missus gone to bed? Why the noise above our head?” They didn’t know the house’s master had a plan to thwart disaster: while floorboards were old and creaky, he found some that weren’t so leaky, and the men to likewise plant them so they’d be a pleasing bastion of the house’s renovation while the wife was on vacation! Thus the vermin were evicted, and the olden floor was quickened; soon replaced with gleaming oak that had no mice or rotten holes. And when the wife came home at last, she gave the floor a second glance, then stopped with eyes like saucers wide and fainted near the fireside... ...when Francine woke up the next day, she was sad to find it wasn’t Christmas. She was even more sad to discover the kitchen floor hadn’t been redone as her dream had suggested! Perhaps she should have been concerned that her dreams were entirely in verse, but this thought was pushed aside by a more pressing concern: how was she going to get Andrew to put in new floors? The thought hadn’t bothered her until her nap by the Christmas tree near the fireside in the den, but now it niggled at the back of her mind. There were definitely mice under the floor; she could hear them running around sometimes. The family had purchased a cat to get rid of them, but he had a sort of Garfield mentality and a cat gut to match, no pun intended, so that front was necessarily a lost cause. Francine didn’t want to go through an entire renovation, but she also didn’t want the

kids to catch any sickness from the mice underneath, and besides; the house they lived in had been around most of a century. It was time to replace those floors-Then it hit her. Andrew was a stickler for numbers. Value was his master in many things. Well wouldn’t putting in a new floor add value to their residence? The property would certainly be worth more with new floors! Suddenly Francine remembered reading something about how the cost of the floors compared to the value they bring has a similarity between retail and wholesale. The retailer sells what was purchased at wholesale for a markup that is often twice the price they themselves paid. Likewise, the value a new floor could bring would be something like twice as much as the cost to purchase the flooring and have it installed. Francine knew the numbers couldn’t be that perfect, but then she did some online research. A few quick clicks brought her to Carpet Express Direct of Gillette. They had a banner that read “the closest to wholesale in northeastern Wyoming”, and as she scrolled through the specials they were promoting, Francine believed it. They had carpets of any kind, they had hardwood flooring, they had Vinyl options, linoleum, tile, concrete and even rubberized floors for areas like the ‘rec room. In a word, they had everything. Francine knew if she let Andrew see the availability and the potential savings, and then brought up the point about the value of renovation, she’d have him sold. And just in time for Christmas, too! It’s easy to save with Carpet Express Direct of Gillette. They’ve always got great specials like Contender Jeweltone Carpet at $1.29/sq. foot, or Bonie Plank Hawaii KOA at $3.99/sq. foot. Options and top-quality service are always available at Carpet Express Direct. If you’re like Francine and it’s time for an upgrade, consider that doing as much may add value to your property and solve underlying problems like mice in the woodwork. Drop on by Carpet Express Direct and see their expansive options today!

Christmas Snack Table Setting aside a table for all of those yummy goodies is great, but making it a coffee bar with a theme is even better. What a great way to warm up!

The Cutest Wrapping Ever Little effort with huge impact, we LOVE these paper cut out animals and subtle matching colors.

Melted Snowman Frosting What a neat idea! We would re-create this effect with mini marshmallows, and white frosting, then add the details with a frosting pen from the store.

Caramel Macchiato Dessert Shots

Elegant Mantel

Birdseed Ornaments

Let us just say that again. Caramel Macchiato dessert shooters. The full recipe is on our Pinterest page. You could make these non alcoholic too and they would be a great dessert!

We love the classy and simplistic look of this holiday mantel. It really draws the eye and while being festive, it is still very chic. A simple and elegant display.

These are great for hanging on your outside trees. Not only are they fun to make with the kids, but they provide a little snack to draw in the birds who stick around for winter in your area!

Cinnamon Glow Candles

Melted Snowman Ornament

This is an easy way to put some cinnamon scents into the air, while dressing up your candles at the same time.

This is just so cute and would make a really fun and easy-to-make gift. There are more ideas like this on our Pinterest Christmas board if you need more gift inspiration!

Eggnog Snickerdoodles Wow. We really want someone to bring us a plate of these cookies. For the most part the eggs in the cookies are replaced with eggnog. Find the full recipe online!

Hot Chocolate Bar

Smart Simple Decorating

Gingerbread Cream Cupcakes

Yes please! Putting out a vat of cocoa and then a bunch of ingredients in cute bowls for people to add? Such a cool idea. We need to add this to our office!

This would be a really simple and clever way to add some Christmas cheer in your kitchen, without cluttering up the surfaces. You could also put bows and ribbons around the doorways!

Oh yummy. Seriously these look so delicious! You can read the full instructions by going to our Pinterest page and then finding the pin on our Christmas board.

* “Here’s a great way to organize in the shop: Use chalkboard paint on the outside of cabinet doors, and even drawer fronts. You can label the contents, or use the surface to jot down quick measurements if needed. Simple to erase when you make a change. I write down references for a project as I go, and it’s easier to see than shuffling through scrap papers on my workbench.” -- A. in Montana * Experts say to always crack your egg on a flat surface, rather than using the edge of a counter or bowl. More egg-tastic advice is to crack eggs into a small bowl instead of directly to ingredients. If you have a sneaky “bad egg” in your dozen, it’s better to find out before you ruin your baking. * Attention salad eaters: Got a thick dressing that’s high in fat? Rinse lettuce before dressing your salad. Wet or moist lettuce traps less dressing. If your dressing is light, give salad greens an extra spin. Drier lettuce holds on to dressing, making lightly dressed salad more flavorful. * Another great use for baking soda: Add a cup or two to your toilet bowl. Swish and let sit for 1-2 hours. Flush for odor control and shine.

* “I love to search for recipes online, and I have learned to pay attention to the comments section. You’ll find a lot of explanation and frequently a tweak that many people have found successful. It pays to check the comments out!” -- W.G. in Missouri —23—

Make This Season on the Slopes Safe and Successful Skiing and snowboarding remain very popular among athletes and outdoor enthusiasts who refuse to be relegated to the couch upon the arrival of winter weather. For the millions of men, women and children who can’t wait to hit the slopes each winter, the thrill of racing down snow-covered mountainsides is a feeling unlike any other. While skiing and snowboarding are popular recreational activities, they can still be dangerous. As a result, it’s imperative that anyone who plans to hit the slopes this winter takes steps to ensure this winter sports season is as safe and successful as it is thrilling. • Start exercising. If it’s been awhile since you hit the gym or broke a sweat, it’s best to start exercising before you hit the slopes. Your risk of injury is greater if you are out of shape upon returning to the slopes, so start exercising as the season approaches so you can regain any flexibility you might have lost since you last slipped on your skis or strapped into your snowboard. Some strength training exercises can reduce your risk of broken bones should you fall while on the mountain, and the better shape

you’re in the more energy you will have to stay on the slopes. • Reassess your gear. Before your first skiing or snowboarding trip, reexamine your gear to make sure it does not need to be replaced. If your gear has a bit too much wear and tear, the National Ski Areas Association recommends choosing gear that is resistant to wind and water and wearing gear that protects you from the sun, which can still do damage by reflecting off the snow and causing sunburn. In addition, inspect your equipment, including your skis and snowboard, to make sure they are up for another season of hitting the slopes. • Take lessons. Novice skiers and snowboarders might want to take a refresher course at the onset of each ski and snowboarding season. Qualified instructors can reacquaint you with techniques you might have forgotten since last winter, and such instruction can reduce your risk of injury. • Ease yourself back in. While it can be tempting to pick up where you left off last season, going too hard on your first trip can increase your risk of injury. Ease yourself back in on your first few trips down

the mountain, warming up on easier slopes until you once again get the hang of things and feel comfortable tackling more difficult trails. If you do find yourself struggling on a slope, the NSAA advises that you always leave your skis and snowboard on and side step down the slope.

Many athletes and outdoor enthusiasts anxiously anticipate the day when they can return to the slopes to ski or snowboard. But it’s important that skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels exercise caution so their winter sports season starts off on the right foot.

How Thermostats Save Money & Energy

Homeowners who have not yet upgraded to a programmable thermostat could be doing themselves a significant disservice. Not only are programmable thermostats key to saving energy, they also save money. The Alliance for Environmental Sustainability note that for every degree they adjust their thermostats, homeowners save between 1 and 3 percent on their heating and cooling bills. Setting the thermostat slightly warmer in the summer and a notch or two cooler in the winter can save a considerable amount of energy and money. The United States Department of Energy says homeowners who make slight seasonal adjustments to their thermostats can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling costs. But such adjustments are only truly effective when homeowners commit to them on a daily basis. The best way to stay on top of temperature settings is to purchase a programmable thermostat, which allow homeowners to predetermine when heat or air conditioning will turn on and off. Many programmable thermostats can store multiple daily settings, allowing homeowners to further customize their heating and cooling schedules based on the time of day as well as the day of the week. According to Energy.gov, a com-

mon misconception associated with thermostats is that a furnace or an air conditioning system works harder than normal to get the space back to a comfortable temperature after the thermostat has been set back, and that this hard work means the overall savings are negligible. However, when a home’s interior temperature is similar to the temperature outside, the home will lose energy to the surrounding environment more slowly. The lower the interior temperature, the slower the heat loss in cold weather, and a higher interior temperature will slow the flow of heat into your house in hot weather. Programmable thermostats are available in a variety of models. Some are easier to program than others. Certain thermostats can be linked to a home’s wireless system

December

so that adjustments to the thermostat can even be made when you are not at home. Consult with an HVAC expert to see if a particular thermostat works best with your system. Some homes may benefit from a dual- or multi-zoned system, which allows homeowners to adjust the temperature independently from other floors or wings of a home. The location of the thermostat also is important. The thermostat should be placed where it can get the most accurate reading of the house. It should be on an interior wall away from direct sunlight, doorways, drafts, and windows. It should not be directly facing an air vent. Avoid placing furniture above or below the thermostat, as such furnishings can impede proper air flow. If you feel like your HVAC system is cycling on and off even after programming, you may need to call a technician, who can determine if there are any obstructions to the thermostat or if the unit is the appropriate size for your home.

How to Cut Costs When Hosting at Home Hosting guests at home can be expensive. Whether they’re hosting family and friends during the holiday season or throwing a backyard barbecue under the summer sun, hosts should know that such gatherings can be costly.

hosting on a budget, choose foods that won’t break the bank. Hot dogs and hamburgers can be bought in bulk at the height of barbecue season. When hosting indoors, serve more affordable fare like fish or salad in lieu of costly prime rib.

Some hosts may find that hosting guests at home is beyond their means. Fortunately, there are many ways for budgetconscious hosts to save money when entertaining at home. • Keep the guest list manageable. The more guests you invite, the bigger your budget will need to be. If your budget does not have much wiggle room, revisit your initial guest list and pare it down to something you can manage financially. Smaller gatherings tend to be more intimate, and hosts won’t have as much work to do as they would when hosting larger get-togethers, which should allow them more time to mingle with guests. • Keep the menu simple. While you might be tempted to dazzle guests with your culinary skills, a more elaborate menu might stretch your budget. When

• Encourage guests to contribute. You also can save money when hosting by encouraging guests to contribute to the festivities. Guests typically want to pitch in as a way of showing their appreciation for hosts, so don’t hesitate to ask them to bring some beverages or desserts with them. Let guests know which foods you plan to serve so they can find the right wine to pair with dinner and

bring a dessert that will complement the meal perfectly. • Borrow items when necessary. If you’re hosting for the first time or if your serving dishes have seen better days, save money by borrowing serving dishes, wine glasses and extra seating. The cost of such items can quickly add up, but borrowing is free and your guests will no doubt be happy to contribute something to the festivities. • Use reusable dinnerware. Come the end of the night, disposable dinnerware might seem like a godsend, saving you the trouble of washing all of those dishes and utensils. But such items cost money, and those costs can quickly add up depending on the size of your guest list. Reusable dinnerware saves you money and can benefit the environment by reducing the carbon footprint of your party. Hosting a get-together for family and friends is a big financial commitment. But hosts working on a budget can cut costs in various ways and still ensure their guests have a great time.

Did You Know?

Financial experts advise that individuals and families save enough money to cover at least six months’ worth of expenses in the case of an emergency or unforeseen layoff. Others say that savings should be closer to a year’s worth of expenses. In spite of the obvious benefits of having a financial safety net, many people continue to live paycheck to paycheck, either voluntarily or out of necessity. According to Pitney Bowes, a document management services company, and Bankrate.com, many people fall well below the benchmarks suggested for savings accounts, checking accounts, 401(k) plans, and other means of building nest eggs. Data suggests the average American has anywhere from $5,000 to $7,000 in savings and between $2,000 and $4,500 in checking accounts. In 2011, the Digerati Life, a resource to help people make smart financial choices, found that 50 percent of American households didn’t even have a retirement account, while a little more than 7 percent did not have a bank account.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread hazelnuts evenly on a baking sheet. Bake until lightly toasted, about 5 to 7 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, transfer the nuts to a bowl, and let them cool. Place the eggnog, sugar, salt, butter, egg, egg yolk, bread flour, yeast, anise seed, and cinnamon into the bread machine. Program the machine for a basic cycle with the crust as “medium.” Press start. Do not use the delay timer. Place the cooled toasted hazelnuts into the machine between Knead Cycle 1 and Knead Cycle 2. When the baking cycle ends, immediately remove the bread from the pan and allow it to cool on a rack. Prepare the glaze by combining the confectioners’ sugar and eggnog in a bowl; mix well. It should be a drizzling consistency. Drizzle the glaze on the cooled bread before slicing.

Notable Events From 2015

The dawn of a new year is not only a great time to look ahead and make plans for the future, but it’s also a great time to reflect on the previous 12 months. The following are some notable events from 2015. • Just seven days into the new year, a terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo shocks the world. Twelve people, including several cartoonists and two police officers, are killed, while five others suffer critical injuries. The attacks are later linked to the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, which reportedly ordered the attacks in retaliation for the publication’s caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. • United States President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro meet in early April, marking the first time in more than half a century the two countries’ leaders met face-to-face. Less than two months later, the United States removes Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, moving one significant step closer to restoring full diplomatic relations between the two countries. • Ireland becomes the first country to legalize same-sex marriage in a national referendum on May 22. Roughly 62 percent of voters approve changing the country’s constitution to allow same-sex marriage, a vote that comes 22 years after the Irish government decriminalized homosexuality. • Just one day after American Independence Day, the United States Women’s National Team wins the Women’s World Cup in Vancouver, British Columbia. The game is a rout, as American Carli Lloyd scores a hat trick in the first three minutes of the game en route to leading her team to a 5-2 victory over Japan. Lloyd’s hat trick was the first such feat in Women’s World Cup Final history. • Alexis Tsipras wins a snap election on September 20 to once again become Prime Minister of Greece. The elections come roughly one month after Tsipras announces his resignation as a result of intraparty defections that have cost him his majority in the Greek parliament. • The Chicago Cubs clinch a postseason series at Wrigley Field for the first time ever when they defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 to win one of two National League Division Series.trains can be inexpensive choices and safe methods for getting people home. Have bus or train fare available in the event guests do not have any cash on them. Keeping guests safe is a priority for party hosts. Arrange for transportation if alcohol is being served so partygoers can get home safely.

11 Tips for Winter Beauty Therapy Revamping a health and beauty regimen for winter comfort takes just a little effort. Here are 11 tips that will benefit you and your appearance all season long.

Winter brings with it many things, including snowy days, chilly nights and the propensity for irritating beauty issues. Cold dry air outside and warm dry air inside can result in moisture loss from both the hair and skin. Not only can this be uncomfortable, but it can be unsightly as well. There are also other beauty issues that come up, like which products to use this time of year. The primary beauty concern for most each winter is dryness. Winter is the season for dry skin and chapped lips because lower temperatures and lower humidity result in drier air, both indoors and outside. Forced-air heating sources also contribute to the problem, especially if they are not equipped with some sort of humidity adding device. Dry skin becomes itchy and turns into a nuisance. Dry air can also contribute to dry hair. Dry hair tends to be flyaway and prone to static. Your entire body actually may be susceptible to staticrelated shocks as you traverse carpeting or pull on charged clothing. The low humidity adds to the separation of electrons and protons in the materials surrounding a person, which contributes to extra static electricity. The imbalance of these microscopic particles becomes evident when you touch something metal and a shock occurs.

1. Adding moisture to your environment is one of the single best ways to combat winter skin and hair issues. This means purchasing a humidifier that will put moisture to the air. Even boiling some water on the stove and allowing the steam to seep into the air can alleviate a dry home. 2. Dry skin can feel tight and itchy. It may or may not flake off as well. Dry skin that is consistently scratched could become irritated or even infected if bacteria gets into the skin. Moisturizers applied all over the body can help the skin retain moisture and alleviate the itchiness. Creams with menthol could provide a cooling effect that also tames itchiness. But watch out for products that also contain alcohol. The alcohol might seem cooling at first, but the alcohol could eventually dry out the skin when it evaporates. 3. Experiment with your home's thermostat to find an indoor temperature that is more comfortable for your dry skin conditions. 4. Very hot showers may chase away the chill from outdoors, but they can strip the skin and hair of moisture as well. Try showering in lukewarm water instead, and slather on a moisturizing body lotion right afterward. 5. Relying on an electric hair dryer to dry your hair after washing can compound dry, frizzy or unruly hair. It may be unwise to step outdoors on a cold day with wet hair, so leave ample

time in your schedule to shower and allow hair to air dry whenever possible. 6. Licking dry lips just exacerbates the situation. Instead, use a moisturizing lip balm sparingly. Even rubbing a little olive oil over the lips can help moisturize and prevent cracking. 7. Choose nonfoaming cleansers for the face and body when washing up. This way the soapy layer doesn't strip away essential moisture from the lipid barrier of the skin. 8. Be sure to continue to apply an SPF product every day before heading outdoors. Ultraviolet rays are still present during the winter, albeit in less concentration. 9. Avoid frosty eye shadows in the winter because they tend to make most people look washed out, especially when the glow of summer skin has waned. Similarly, avoid overdoing bronzer during the winter months, which can seem out of place and make the skin look artificially orange. 10. Revamp hair color to bring out golden hues during the winter months and keep you looking vivacious. Avoid highlights that are white or ashy. Don't go for more than two shades lighter or darker in any direction for a whole-head coloring. 11. Hat head is almost as dreaded as a bad hair day brought on by dry winter air. Hat head occurs when damp hair has been allowed to dry under a hat, which then causes flattening and denting. Allow hair to dry completely before donning a hat. And consider parting your hair the opposite way before putting on the hat, so it will have volume when the hat is removed and hair falls naturally back in place.

Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned. James 5:7-5:12 NIV
