While many people find adapting to a healthier diet challenging, that challenge often pales in comparison to the intimidation felt when working out for the first time in years. Exercising after an extended period of inactivity may intimidate people who choose to workout at gyms, where fellow gym members may appear to be in tip-top shape. Saving more money is a goal for many people. Whether retirement is looming or decades down the road, saving as much money as possible is a great way for men and women to plan for their financial futures.
But saving money is not always so easy, especially as the cost of living continues to rise in so many parts of the world. In its 2015-2016 “Salary Budget Survey,” WorldatWork, a global association for human resources management professionals and business leaders, found that U.S. employees can expect an average base salary increase of 3.1 percent in 2016. That marks only a slight increase from 2015, and many working professionals wonder if that increase will be enough for them to start saving more money. Cost of living salary increases likely won’t be enough for working professionals to grow their savings considerably, if at all. Fortunately, there are several ways that men and women can cut back each day and grow their savings without affecting their quality of life. • Make your own coffee at home. While few people may
give it much thought, that $2 or $3 coffee you buy each morning adds up to a substantial amount of money each month. If your daily cup of joe from the coffee shop next to your office costs $2.50, that’s $12.50 per week (not counting weekend mornings), $50 per month and $600 per year. Buying coffee at the grocery store and preparing it at home won’t cost anywhere near that much, saving you hundreds of dollars per year, which you can put directly into your savings account.

cost savings over the year.
• Trim some fat from your cable bill. While cable providers have been slow to embrace customizable plans that allow customers to pick and choose their channels in an effort to save money each month, some providers have begun to offer such plans. Contact your cable provider to see if you can customize your plan so you are no longer paying for channels you don’t watch. If your provider does not allow you to customize, consider cutting your cable entirely. Streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime cost a fraction of monthly cable subscriptions, and these services continue to increase their offerings. • Work with a financial advisor. If you keep coming up empty in your search for ways to save, work with a financial advisor. Financial advisors can help you establish a monthly budget so you are in a good position to save. In addition, such advisors can suggest ways to grow your money that you might not know about.
• Bring your lunch to work. Many men and women already know that dining in instead of out is a great way to cut back on unnecessary spending. But it’s not just skipping nights out on the town that can help save money. Rather than spending somewhere between $5 and $10 every day on lunch at the office commissary or nearby restaurants, bring your lunch with you. Bringing your lunch allows you to buy in bulk rather than pay for each individual midday meal, and that can add up to considerable

Family-Friendly Winter Activities
Many people may run indoors when the temperatures outside approach or dip below freezing. But the truly adventurous see no reason why a little cold weather should keep them cooped up indoors for months at a time.
gest kids might be getting too cold, such as shivering or clothes that are soaked through.
Sports and other physical activities can provide the perfect respite from the cabin fever that can settle in during long winters. Families looking to get some quality time outdoors together this winter can enjoy a host of activities in the great outdoors, even if the temperatures are a tad on the chilly side. • Sledding: Sledding may remind adults of their childhoods and turn kids’ snow days into fun afternoons they will never forget. Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans down snowy hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing kids downhill or sharing a sled with their youngsters. While older kids can typically handle sleds on their own, parents should ride along with toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering duties. When sledding, keep a close eye for any signs that sug-
• Snowshoeing: Parents may not know that many retailers sell snowshoes for children. While snowshoeing can be physically demanding, it’s also a fun way for families that like family walks to continue those traditions even if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. Make sure kids are bundled up, paying extra attention to their footwear. Kids will enjoy snowshoeing more if their boots are both comfortable and capable of keeping their feet warm.
• Snowman building: Perhaps no outdoor winter activity is more conducive to family fun than building a snowman. The season’s first substantial snowfall provides the perfect opportunity for parents and their children to start building some snowmen. While “snowman building” is unlikely to find its way onto any gym schedules, building a snowman provides a great workout. Lifting snow is great strength training, while pushing snow to form Frosty’s body is a great way to get in some cardiovascular exercise. • Skiing and snowboarding: The earlier youngsters start skiing and/or snowboarding, the more likely such activities will prove second nature. Many resorts offer skiing and snowboarding lessons to kids and adults, so parents can book weekend getaways for the family to nearby resorts and foster a love of winter sports in youngsters. While it’s tempting to huddle up indoors when winter hits full swing, families who embrace the great outdoors when the temperatures dip can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the way

Low-Calorie Foods That Still Fill You Up
Hunger can be a difficult hurdle to clear for people looking to lose weight. While nutritious foods don’t lack for taste, many people adapting to new diets featuring healthy, low-calorie foods find themselves still hungry after meals, making it difficult for them to stay the course and reach their weightloss goals.
Some low-calorie foods may contribute to hunger pangs, but there are many foods that satisfy hunger despite their low calorie count. • Baked potatoes: Potatoes might be high in carbohydrates, but they also are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that can boost the immune system. Baked potatoes also provide a powerful punch of potassium, which can help men and women better control their blood pressure. That’s especially beneficial to overweight or obese men and women who are already dealing with high blood pressure. Baked potatoes also can make men and women
feel full, which should help low-calorie devotees avoid overeating.
• Eggs: The reputation of eggs tends to change every few years, and much of that can no doubt be attributed to misinformation about this lowcalorie breakfast staple. Eggs are a great source of complete protein, and that protein contributes to feelings of fullness. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, eggs contain all nine essential amino acids that, upon being digested, release hormones that suppress appetite. • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is another excellent and lowcalorie source of protein, offering roughly twice as much protein as regular yogurt. Greek yogurt also is an excellent source of calcium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins B6 and B12. But Greek yogurt also contributes to feelings of fullness, as a study from the Nestlé Nutrition Institute found that consuming proteins found in dairy
products increases satiety.
• Oatmeal: While many people may only eat oatmeal when fighting a cold, this high-fiber and low-calorie breakfast alternative can be enjoyed yearround, helping to fight feelings of hunger all along. According to the Dairy Council of California©, oatmeal contains soluble fiber that stays in the stomach for long periods of time. That contributes to feelings of fullness and may just decrease mid-morning hunger pangs. The soluble fiber in oatmeal can also decrease low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which is often referred to as “bad cholesterol.” • Apple: Apples are another low-calorie source of soluble fiber, and apples also are a good source of vitamin C, which can boost the immune system. But apples are more than just a low-calorie food that contributes to feelings of fullness. Finnish researchers who studied dietary data of more than 9,200 men and women found that those who ate apples frequently had lower risk of stroke than those who did not eat apples. That could be attributable to the effect of soluble fiber on LDL cholesterol as well as the effects of the antioxidant compounds found in apples. Hunger pangs have derailed many a low-calorie diet. But there are plenty of low-calorie foods that also satisfy hunger and reduce the likelihood of overeating.

The Benefits Of Reading
Many people are avid readers, feeling that a good book remains the most entertaining form of escapism. But reading provides more than just an opportunity to leave the daily grind behind. While many people may read to immerse themselves in something other than a movie or a television show, they may not know about all the additional benefits they are enjoying when cuddling up with a good book.
• Reading can improve brain function. A recent study from researchers at Emory University discovered that reading a novel can improve brain function in various ways. During the study, researchers found that reading fiction improves connectivity in the brain. In addition, reading fiction improved readers’ ability to put themselves in other peoples’ shoes, which might help them relate better to people in both the present and future. • Reading can benefit long-term brain health. While readers engrossed in a great book might only be worried about what’s coming on the next page, the benefits to reading are much more longterm than the next chapter. Researchers at the Rush University Medical Center
in Chicago found that reading is one of a handful of mentally stimulating activities that can benefit brain health in old age. In their Rush Memory and Aging Project, researchers examined nearly 300 elderly men and women, giving them tests of memory and thinking throughout the final years of their lives. When participants, who were surveyed as to how often they engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as reading, passed away, their brains were examined for signs of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Researchers discovered that the participants who engaged in mentally challenging activities most often had slower rates of memory decline. In addition, even those who had symptoms of brain damage that are commonly associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia seemed to benefit from the stimulation that mentally challenging activities produced. • Reading can help reduce stress. Another big benefit of reading is its relationship to stress. According to a 2009 study from researchers at the University of Sussex in England, reading can reduce stress by up to 68 percent. In addition, reading might help relieve that stress even faster than other forms of stress relief because it allows for a more immediate escape from the stress of daily life. • Reading can help you get a more restful night’s sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, engaging in a calming activity for an hour before going to bed can help your body wind down and ready itself for sleep. Some people may struggle to fall asleep after reading on an electronic device, such as a tablet or e-reader, as the light that emanates from such devices may be activating the brain. If need be, stick to reading traditional print books and magazines before going to bed. Reading is not only a favorite activity for many people, but it’s also something that can benefit the body in myriad ways.

The Tricky Blow Dryer The Frozen Fat Fighter
Keep your blow dryer in your gym locker so you HAVE to shower at the gym. Don’t use a blow-dryer? It works with any bulky styling tool. Talk about self control!
Trouble eating all of those fruits and veggies before they go bad? Try having tons of frozen produce so it’s always available!
The Big Heavy Water Bottle Always carry around a giant water bottle. Reason 1: You need lots of water to be healthy. Seriously. Reason 2: Many people get 1/3 of their calories from what they drink. Now when you are tempted, you have no excuses. Reason 3: You will be more motivated to drink it because it’s heavy and awkward to lug around. There are MANY more reasons, (probably) but I am out of room to type. Just drink your water, OK?
PROTEIN = MUSCLE
The Planned Failure Preventer The Treadmill of Entertainment First: Buy a super addictive show series or best selling audio book that you are dying to see/ read. Next: ONLY allow yourself to read/watch when you are running on the treadmill. This will be a GREAT way to multitask! Plus, after the season is over, you will most likely have formed a habbit that your muscles will want to repeat. it also makes it WAY easier to time your cardio. Cardio is GREAT for burning fat and working your heart and lungs. Its pretty much essential.
The 30 Minute Protein Rule 30 minutes after working out ALWAYS have a source of protein for a snack. This is how you build muscle. String Cheese, Beef Jerky, even a Breve (a latte´made with heavy whipping cream) count. Don’t skip your protein!
Pick a day every week to NOT work out. A cheat day, or a lazy day or both. Hear me out: when you have a day off of your “workout regime” to just do your normal unhealthy stuff, you aren’t depriving yourself. You can see that cinnamon roll on Tuesday and decide you will have one on Sunday, your cheat day. By Sunday, you probably will forget about it. ALSO, if you don’t have a specific rest day picked, you can choose the day you are the busiest or sorest. Take THAT day off. Taking a day off may prevent you from possibly giving up altogether on a bad day.

looking your absolute best? Stay hydrated by drinking at least eight glasses of water each day. This can sometimes be challenging when you’re on the go and find yourself reaching for a hot cup of java to keep pushing through the day. To help increase the amount of water you’re drinking, I recommend squeezing fresh lemon into the glass for a refreshing taste.

Canine Charlie and the Floorboard Blues By: Kevin Bennett
Another new year had come and gone. The sun of Summer gave way to the leaves of autumn, and in the middle of winter, somehow the year changed; though the same snow was on the ground. That snow. Amanda hated that snow. Well, she loved to play in it, and it was very beautiful; but over the years it had warped the wood flooring in the entryway something fierce. No longer was there any gloss, and the edges of the planks were beginning to slowly curl upward. Something needed to be done about it, but as to what, well...that was difficult to say. Everything came to a head one evening. Amanda blamed the dog. The dog was a Mastiff/St. Bernard mix that made Chewbacca look like a wallrat. And he thought he was still a puppy. He’d curl up in the little doggy-bed that was his when he first came to Amanda’s household; the fabric stretched to its limit and a look of hilarious stupidity on the dog’s face as he clearly wondered which magic potion he had drunk to so drastically alter his size. And all that was great fun! The family laughed, and the dog wagged his tail and slobbered while the fire roared and Christmas music played in the background. But then, a week after New Year’s, the boys came in and leaned out the front door, yelling: “Charlie! Come here, boy! Get in here! It’s a blizzard out there!” Charlie came! And boy, did he come fast. Fat legs with paws the size of a hand scrambled through ice, snow, and fur, and before the dog could realize it, he was stumbling through the door at full-tilt; wet, icy paws incapable of slowing him down once inside. Charlie went shooting across the entryway into an antique coatrack made of metal and manliness, and overcrowded with garments. The rack came crashing down and one of its prongs punched a knothole right through the floor, causing the board to jump from its moorings and catapult a few nails across the room; one of which managed to turn in mid-air such that it landed right on the nose of a black-and-white portrait of some severe-faced ancestor cross-eyed to begin with; now appearing as though the reason for their strange eyes were the nail sticking from their nose. The dog yipped and went scrambling the other direction. One of the boys went to chase him but tripped on the dislocated floorboard and smacked his head on a lamp by the foyer’s bench while the other boy laughed.
Amanda was speechless. For about two-point-three seconds. The man of the house hadn’t seen what happened, but with an acute sense of deja vu, he knew from the screams and metaphorical flames reverberating across the other side of the house that something was amiss. Michael put down his laptop, took a deep breath, and jogged downstairs, where he had the unappreciable pleasure of seeing a dog the size of a Clydesdale get lectured by a one-hundred pound woman too skinny to get wet in the shower; and with such angry, frightening words that the dog had put his paws over his head and cowered under a table. Then Michael saw the floorboard, and divined the truth. “Amanda!” He said. “Settle down. I need to show you something,” and he led her to the computer he’d been searching on. “I figured we oughta get some new floors this year anyway,” Michael explained, “and I was looking through options online, when I found this.” Michael showed Amanda Carpet Express Direct’s website, where carpet, hardwood, laminate, Sheet Vinyl, Tile, Stone, Wood, Cement, and even Rubber options were available; and at the closest prices to wholesale throughout northeastern Wyoming. “We need a new floor down there anyway. I think we oughta go with tile,” Michael said, pointing to some of the specials. Amanda replied, “Can you make a rug out of a dog?” And they had a laugh. Soon the foyer was re-floored, and canine Charlie remembered his valuable lesson about physics for a long time. Maybe you don’t have any elephantine mutts maligning your floorboards, but at Carpet Express Direct of Gillette, there are numerous flooring options at very affordable prices. In Liquid Vinyl Plank, Country Home Georgia Sand is available at only $3.79/sq. foot. Meanwhile Historical Saddle Horn Laminate is only $2.49/ sq. foot; and many other specials are available. If it’s time to get a new floor, it’s time to drop by Carpet Express Direct.

Creative Ways To Ring In The New Year innovative ways to entertain and ensure everyone has a blast. The following are a few ways to do just that as you and your guests prepare to close the book on 2015 and usher in 2016.
Counting down the hours until the new year can be exciting, as the world anxiously anticipates the adventures in store for the months ahead. Celebrating the new year dates back thousands of years to the ancient Babylonians, who celebrated a new year come the first full moon after the spring equinox. The new year is now commemorated in various ways across the globe. According to History.com, one million people gather in New York City’s Time Square to watch the famed crystal ball drop each year. Across the pond in London, celebrants watch thousands of individual fireworks launch over the Thames River. In Sydney, Australia, roughly one million people line the shoreline each year to watch a fireworks show over the famed harbor. To match the excitement of New Year ’s festivities, each year party hosts and hostesses are on the lookout for
experience something you have longed to see, such as the Egyptian pyramids or the city lights in the romantic city of Paris.
• Go bowling. New Year ’s Eve probably isn’t a big league night, so it’s likely you can reserve a number of lanes. Book in advance to take advantage of affordable food and drink packages. Some alleys now offer more than just bowling, with live music or deejay entertainment as well. You do not have to be a professional bowler, either, as the goal of bowling with friends is to simply have some fun and make some lasting memories.
• Cheer for every time zone. Thanks to the various time zones across the globe, “Happy New Year” is shouted multiple times throughout the night on New Year ’s Eve. TimeandDate.com notes that, depending on how you define the time zone and if you include the International Date Line, there are 24 or 25 standard time zones. That gives revelers 25 opportunities to usher in the new year. Choose a country in each time zone, and then employ that country’s cultural traditions to celebrate the new year.
• Try a “first”. There is a first time for everything, and why not try something you have been thinking about doing for some time on the first day of the new year? Maybe you’re ready to tap into your adventurous side and try skydiving. Or, you may be looking to travel abroad to
• Design a scavenger hunt. A fun activity for both adults and children, scavenger hunts can send guests in search of clues and answers based on things that happened over the previous 12 months. Include photos and other mementos when preparing clues.

Scrapbooks Can Help D o c u m e n t Yo u r Ye a r
Many interesting and special events take place during the course of a typical year. While the trend is to share photos and anecdotes via social media, these memories tend to be forgotten soon after they are posted. Rather than relegate birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and other such yearly events to the black hole of cyberspace, crafty men, women and children may want to display them in more prominent ways. Scrapbooking is a popular hobby that can help people document various events over the course of the year. But scrapbooking can be much more than that as well. Scrapbooks can serve as valuable resources that speak to the way life once was. Such traditions are not new. Books highlighting family memorabilia, such as recipes, poems, letters, and illustrations, were popular in England as early as the 15th century. Even school yearbooks are a type of scrapbook, highlighting students and events in a single convenient book.
The reasons for scrapbooking are the same today as they once were. Scrapbooks preserve memories, record family stories and pass down information through generations. Scrapbooks can even be customized in any manner their creators desire. For those who have resolved to devote more time to documenting happy
times and special events in the year ahead, scrapbooking is a great way to do just that. Here’s how to make the process creative and successful.
• Devote a box to “scraps.” At the beginning of the year, set aside a mediumsized box, such as a shoebox, that can store various items you want to include in your scrapbook. These may include ticket stubs, receipts, brochures from trips, or any other items you deem worth saving. • Make time to scrapbook. Set aside a few days each month to go through collected items and organize them so you have an idea of what will be included on your pages. Every event may not make the final cut, but that’s up to you. • Indulge in some craftstore shopping. Not everyone has the time to design each scrapbook page from scratch. Fortunately, there are numerous pre-designed templates or slip-in pages
that require little work on the part of scrapbookers.
• Use your own handwriting. Handwritten sentiments can make the scrapbook even more meaningful. • Don’t overload with photos. Let one or two photos on a page best convey the emotions and stories. Create balance with white space, text and other accents. • Categorize your photos. Disorganized photos can make scrapbook creation more challenging and ultimately frustrating. Organize your photos by month and rely on cloud-based photo storage systems to keep them safe. Then, when you need them, you can print only those images you want to include in your book. • Have fun with the process. You have the entire year to create a beautiful scrapbook. Take your time and experiment with different ideas.

Get A Head-Start O n Ta x S e a s o n serving as their elderly parents’ primary caretakers over the last year will need their kids’ and their folks’ social security numbers. If you do not have these numbers upon filing, your return will likely be delayed and you might even be denied potentially substantial tax credits.
• Gather your year-end financial statements. If you spent the last year investing, then you will have to pay taxes on any interest earned. Interest earned on the majority of savings accounts is also taxable, so gather all of your year-end financial statements from your assorted accounts in one place. Doing so will make filing your return, whether you do it yourself or work with a professional, go more quickly. The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy for many families, as the kids go back to school and parents return to work. The beginning of January also serves as a great time to start preparing for tax season. While the deadline to file returns may be several months away, getting a head-start allows men and women the chance to organize their tax documents so they aren’t racing against a deadline come April. The following are a handful of ways to start preparing for your returns now. • Find last year’s return. You will need information from last year’s return in order to file this year, so find last year’s return and print it out if you plan to hire a professional to work on your return. • Gather dependents’ information. While you might know your own Social Security number by heart, if you have dependents, you’re going to need their information as well. New parents or adults who started
• Speak with your mortgage lender. Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money paid in interest on your home or homes is tax deductible. If these forms are not received in a timely manner, speak with your lender. You might even be able to download them from your lender’s
January
secure website.
• Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. While it’s easiest to maintain a list of all charitable donations you make as the year goes on, if you have not done that, then you can make one now. Look for receipts of all contributions, contacting any charities you donated to if you misplaced any receipts. • Book an appointment with your tax preparation specialist now. As April 15 draws closer, tax preparers’ schedules get busier and busier. The earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for that meeting. In addition, if you have gathered all of the information you need by early February, then booking your appointment early means you can file earlier and receive any return you might be eligible for that much quicker. Tax season might not be right around the corner, but it’s never too early to start preparing your return.

Deuteronomy 28:1-28:6, ESV
“And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.
