PAIN GONE Libby Bartlett writes: I have been suffering from a lot of pain in my back. From a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst, my pain when I came into the healing room was about a 9. After I received prayer from one of the Healing Room teams, my Lord God removed my pain and it was a 0 when we were done praying. There is power in prayer and, when 2 or more are gathered together in the name of Jesus, He is in the midst of them. This was evident. Continually thanking Jesus and His use of the Healing Room ministry. What are you waiting for? No appointment is necessary, we take walk-ins! OPEN: Thursday evenings Beginning at 6:30 pm. DID YOU KNOW
?
The hottest day in recorded history is July 10, 1913, when temperatures soared to 134 F at Furnace Creek, Calif. in the area known as Death Valley. Death Valley is situated between a collection of high and steep mountain ranges in the Mojave Desert, and that positioning, coupled with the low elevation of Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level in certain places, assures high temperatures throughout much of the year. In July of 1913, the area was enduring an especially scorching heat wave, as temperatures exceeded 125 F for more than a week straight. By July 10, the temperature peaked at 134 F, a temperature that was measured at a weather observation post at Greenland Ranch. Interestingly enough, the high for the day was just one degree cooler than the thermometer at Greenland Ranch was capable of measuring. Though Death Valley still holds the distinction it earned on that especially hot day in July of 1913, for much of the 101 years since it was not officially recognized as the record holder thanks to an erroneous report of a 136 F degree day in Libya in 1922. That error, which was blamed on the inexperience of the weather observer and outdated equipment, was eventually corrected by the World Meteorological Organization in 2012.

Instead of Pesticides
ests can be a nuisance. Whether they’re scampering about the yard while you try to entertain guests or invading your home’s interior when the weather outside pushes them indoors, pests are almost always unwelcome guests. Many homeowners address pest problems with pesticides. But the Environmental Protection Agency notes that there are other ways for homeowners to control pest problems around their homes. Though sometimes pesticides prove the only way to effectively eradicate pest problems, the following are some more eco-friendly alternatives homeowners can try before opting for pesticides.
CUT OFF FOOD SOURCES One of the primary reasons pests infiltrate a home is to get food. Homeowners who don’t create opportunities for pests to eat might be able to prevent infestations without the need for pesticides. When storing items in a pantry, make sure all boxes and bags are tightly sealed. Many pests can easily access food sources stored in cardboard boxes, so homeowners with roach or ant infestations might want to consider storing cereal, sugar and flour in sealable plastic containers that such pests cannot penetrate. KEEP A TIDY HOUSE Pests do not only access food sources stored in the pantry. A dirty house is also very inviting to pests, who can feast on crumbs left behind on floors and tables. Don’t leave crumbs lying around on tables or countertops, as such scraps might not seem like a meal to you but will serve as a great source of food for hungry pests. Sweep and mop kitchen floors to remove any traces of
food that might have fallen on the ground while you were cooking, and be sure to vacuum around the table where you and your family eat dinner night. DON’T BE SUNK BY YOUR SINK A dirty sink is another attraction pests can’t resist. If your sink does not come equipped with a garbage disposal, install a food trap on the drain so food is not washing down the drain, where it can stick to the side of the pipe and attract pests. Dirty dishes should be cleaned immediately as well. If allowed to sit in the sink for hours or overnight, dirty dishes will attract hungry pests, so clean the dishes and then give your sink a quick cleaning once the dishes have been washed.
STAY DRY Water is very attractive to pests and roaches in particular. A very small amount of water is all some roaches need to feel satisfied, so all surfaces and sinks should be kept dry. Drain water from the sink, as a sink full of water is attractive to roaches because they know how to swim and can use water as a food source. Leaky plumbing should also be addressed, as leaky faucets, hoses and pipes may create a pest-friendly environment that’s difficult to eradicate once it’s established. ADDRESS LEAKS AROUND THE HOUSE. A pest infestation also may be a byproduct of leaks around the house. Cracks or openings along the baseboards or behind the sink can create a point of entry for hungry pests, so seal any such cracks or openings as soon as possible. Pests also may enter a home through holes in window screens or march right in through the front door if there is any space between the bottom of the door and
the floor. These repairs are both simple and effective at preventing pests from entering a home. CLEAR OUT CLUTTER Cluttered areas make great hiding places for pests. Stacks of old newspapers or magazines can obscure pests, and homeowners might have a full infestation without even knowing it. Removing such clutter eliminates potential hiding places for pests. Though some pest problems may require the use of pesticides, homeowners who want to attempt a more eco-friendly approach to eradicating pests can do so in a number of ways.

Save Money and Resources
rotecting the world’s resources for generations to come is a motivating force for many eco-conscious men and women. People go to great lengths to reduce, reuse and recycle in an effort to save the planet. But such efforts also save money, making attempts to go green financially advantageous. Cutting down on paper waste is one of the easiest ways to save money and benefit the planet. From bank statements to bills to advertisements from retailers, many people find their mailboxes are inundated with mailings they pay little or no attention to. The following are a handful of ways to reduce paper waste and possibly even save some money at the same time. OPT FOR ONLINE BILL PAY. Most financial institutions now have online bill payment software available at no cost to customers. Banks or credit unions can automatically send funds to your various creditors, and these businesses no longer need to send you a paper bill in the mail. Information regarding bank accounts and retail and utility accounts can now be delivered electronically, eliminating the need for paper statements. In addition, some companies offer discounts to customers who pay their bills online or choose e-statements instead of paper statements. Paying bills online also ensures the payments arrive on time, helping consumers avoid penalties on late payments.
Page 13
SHOP OR CONDUCT RESEARCH ONLINE. Shopping online can reduce fuel consumption, save money and reduce the time you spend going from store to store looking for the perfect item. Even if you prefer to do your shopping in-store, when planning your shopping trip peruse an online catalog instead of signing up for paper mailings. USE CREDIT CARDS. Online shoppers rely on debit or credit cards to make purchases, which cuts down on the use of personal checks. Cutting down on check usage means reducing the number of checks that have to be printed, which reduces paper and chemical ink consumption. Checks often need to be mailed, which means consumers must use envelopes and pay postage fees. But credit card payments can be made over the telephone or through secured websites, making online credit card transactions an easy and eco-friendly options. CREATE DIGITAL RECORDS. Choosing e-statements and receipts enables you to create a digital file of important data. This information can be stored on an external hard drive or a computer and accessed when necessary. Digital files reduce paper clutter and take up less space. Plus, digital records stored on your computer are less likely than paper receipts to go missing.
Paper waste and clutter is not environmentally friendly. But consumers can take numerous steps to cut back on such waste. Small changes to handling finances can result in significant environmental and financial benefits.

FIVE UNEXPECTED USES FOR VINEGAR
Granny’s Teeth Whitening Recipe
Prevent Moldy Berries! This is a tried and true method: When you get your berries home, instead of just rinsing them in water, prepare a mixture of one part white or apple cider vinegar and 10 parts water. Dump the berries into the mixture and swirl around, then store wherever you desire. pinterest.com/pin/142426406938064292/
Remove Dog & Cat Urine Saturate the affected area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water, and then blot it dry. Vinegar is an odor eliminator. Next, sprinkle the entire spot with baking soda. Baking soda absorbs odors. Now, make a mixture of 2/3 Hydrogen Peroxide with 1/3 Dishwasher detergent. Peroxide foams and lifts the stainlike any oxy-cleaning product. Rub/work the mixture into the stain. Let it all sit over night, then wipe / vacuum up the leftover baking soda. Smell Gone.

Wood Floor Cleaner For wood floors, contractor Stephen Fanuka says, “You want to get a nice clean shine on a wood floor? Get yourself a bucket and mix nine parts warm water to one part white vinegar. This is a cheap trick I learned from an 80-year-old cleaning lady who used to make my wood floors look dazzling.” pinterest.com/pin/192036371580800198/
Mix on a plate the following: 1 tsp baking soda A dash of salt A few drops of white vinegar, which will foam. Dip toothbrish in mixture and brush onto teeth. Follow by brushing with toothpaste to get the vinegar taste out. I can only imagine how bad this probably tastes, as I have not personally tried this method. Did You Know: Strawberries also can be used to whiten your teeth. (A tastier solution.)
Keep Your New Clothes New Vinegar helps to keep, preserve, and protect colors; and is a natural fabric softener. Add 1 cup Vinegar to rinse cycle the first time you wash your new clothes. Use the Cold setting as well, and keep like colors together.

Organized Locker = Organized Student
S
tudents learn many important lessons while in middle school and high school. Assignments get progressively more difficult, and students grow accustomed to being independent thinkers and largely responsible for their educational accomplishments. In addition, students may learn other lessons, such as how organization can play a critical role in success and benefit them both in the classroom and out of it. Students are typically introduced to lockers during high school or middle school. As elementary school students, kids use classroom desks to store books and supplies, and how desks are organized is often governed by teachers who have firm rules regarding the condition of desks. Lockers are an entirely different story. Students are solely responsible for organizing and maintaining their lockers and may be tasked with following a few rules set forth by the school. Students may overlook the importance of organized lockers, and in such instances lockers can easily become disaster areas. But a messy locker can add unnecessary stress to a school day. Getting lockers organized
GROUP ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE. In addition to employing a color-coding system, students also can group books by daily schedule. Organize the locker based on which classes are held in the morning and afternoon. This makes it less likely that students will forget supplies they need for class. THINK ABOUT EXTRA ACCESSORIES. Lockers have the basics, which are usually a shelf and a hook for coats. All sorts of requires some effort and upkeep. locker accessories exist to customize the interior. Look into Grouping subjects by color can make it a message board or more hooks that can be easier to find notebooks, textbooks and folders in a locker. Remove anything that does not belong in the locker, including garbage and old projects. Students should not use their lockers to store items they don’t need for school. That only takes away space for the stuff kids do need for class.
DEVELOP A MAINTENANCE PLAN. Old assignments may begin to accumulate inside a locker. This can be remedied by maintaining a cleaning schedule for a locker. A few minutes each week can keep a locker clean and clear of clutter.

One-Sided Windows Won’t Come Clean Q: I clean my apartment windows every week, but I can’t clean the outside. If I lift the window and reach around outside, I can just get the bottom part of the window. We’re in an upstairs unit, so I can’t reach them from outside. Any solutions? -- Frustrated in Wisconsin
A: It sounds like you have single-hung windows, which have a bottom sash that can be lifted up, while the top window is sealed into the frame. Double-hung windows can be opened at either the top or bottom. Single-hung windows are designed so that the bottom sash can be removed for cleaning or replacement. How they’re removed varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there are a couple of methods that are pretty much the same. The simplest type to remove, in my opinion, is a sash that has slide-backs along the top so you can easily pull in its top retainer clips and lever the top of the sash out of the frame toward you. From there it can be disengaged from the slider connections at the bottom and maneuvered President out of the frame. aummer party season is in full swing, and that means scores of people will be relaxing with family and friends on their decks. But such gatherings are only as fun as they are safe, and responsible hosts and homeowners must inspect their decks for signs of trouble before hosting their first summer soiree. Deck inspections can be relatively simple, especially for those homeowners whose decks are newly built or recently refurbished. But even a new deck should be inspected at the start of the season to ensure the safety of all who will be spending time on the deck in the months to come. The following are a few tips to help homeowners spot trouble spots on their decks. CHECK THE WOOD. Split or decaying wood is a trouble spot that will need to be addressed. Such wood may feel spongy or break off without splintering, and those things are indicative of rot. Another sign of trouble to look for with regard to the wood is whether or not it has any holes. Holes may be a symptom of infect infestation, which can compromise the safety of the deck over time. INSPECT THE LEDGER BOARD. The ledger board is a weight-bearing board that connects the deck to the house. Over time, the gap between the ledger board and

Flashing prevents the buildup of moisture that causes rot, and when there is an issue with the flashing, it’s often noticeable because mud and debris has become stuck between the flashing and the exterior wall of the home. Clear any such debris and then seal the overlapping areas with caulk.
Support posts should be firmly connected to the beams below the deck floor. Loose connections between the support posts and beams should be tightened, and replace any bolts that need replacing.

types of cleaners, so consult with the company who built your deck or speak to a local home improvement specialist to determine which type of cleaning solution your deck needs. Once the deck has been power washed, allow it to dry before applying any additional layers of finish.
Balusters are the short pillars or columns that run perpendicular to the railings and the walking surface of the deck, and these should also be checked to ensure they are not loose. Youngsters may lean against the balusters when relaxing on the deck, so it’s imperative that none are loose. Deck inspections ideally should be performed in spring before homeowners host their first get-together, and if any problems are discovered, everyone should steer clear of the deck until those issues have been addressed

oupons can help people, and parents in particular, save substantial amounts of money. While television shows have documented the efforts of people who take coupon usage to the extreme, many shoppers simply want to earn modest savings on their grocery bills, recognizing that saving a few dollars here or there can add up to significant savings over time. But even if you have no desire to spend hours on end hunting down the best deals, there are some ways to make the best use of coupons without taking up much of your time.
UNDERSTAND STORES’ COUPON POLICIES. Begin by researching if stores you frequent have restrictions on coupon usage. Some stores will double the value of coupons and others will not. Stores may set limits on the number of coupons one register can process or how many coupons a particular shopper can use at one time. It may be possible to use two different coupons for the same item, provided one is a manufacturer’s coupon and the other is store-based. The more you know about the coupon policies at your favorite stores, the more likely you are to use those policies to your advantage. GET ORGANIZED. Using coupons effectively requires some organization. Develop a system for categorizing coupons by type or expiration date, which should ensure you don’t miss out on discounts because you lost coupons of they have expired. SUBSCRIBE TO SEVERAL NEWSPAPERS AND COUPON WEBSITES. Newspapers and store circulars are still great resources for coupons, so subscribe to your local newspaper, which likely still includes inserts advertising the latest sales and coupons. You also can subscribe to coupon websites, many of which are free and deliver coupons to subscribers’ email inboxes on a daily or weekly basis. CONSIDER A COUPON-CLIPPING SERVICE. A coupon service will clip coupons for you and send them to you for a fee. This enables you to collect coupons from various regions where coupon values may be higher than where you live.
Even shoppers who don’t go to extremes can save substantial amounts of money with coupons.
JOIN A STORE LOYALTY PROGRAM. Those cards supermarkets and other stores scan at checkout do more than just track your purchases. They typically entitle members to discounts that other shoppers are not privy to. These discounts come off the bill automatically, saving you time and money. Furthermore, being part of a store loyalty program may entitle you to emails or other advertisements on special sales not open to the general public. LEARN HOW TO STACK COUPONS WITH STORE SALES. Many blogs tell you which stores are running sales and how they compare to coupons in recent newspapers and circulars. This enables you to not only get the sale price on a particular item but also earn the coupon discount. This is a good way to save even more money. GET TO KNOW THE STANDARD PRICES OF PRODUCTS. The only way to know if a coupon is a good deal is to be familiar with the going rate of the products you buy on a regular basis. When visiting the grocery store, make a note of how much your favorite items cost at full price. This way you will know when a sale is truly a sale.
BE PREPARED TO STOCK UP. Some of the best deals to be had involve buy one get one free, deals which are often referred to as “BOGO” or “B1G1.” When such deals can be combined with a coupon, the savings are substantial. Set aside a rack or area of the home for stockpiling your BOGO purchases. DON’T FORGET ABOUT PAPERLESS COUPONS. Paperless coupons, or ecoupons, are often linked to store loyalty programs. Many ecoupon services require shoppers to sign up online and provide some basic information about themselves. When you go to check out at the store, you will swipe your customer card and any available ecoupons will automatically be deducted from your purchase. Ecoupons are usually redeemed at face value and cannot be doubled or shared. TRY COMPETITORS’ COUPONS, TOO. Some stores will honor coupons from their competition. If one supermarket is offering a particular BOGO deal, clip the coupon and bring it to your local store to see if they will match the discount. Although many people will not go to extremes when using coupons, when used wisely, such discounts can help save a good deal of money.

body. The vest also was designed to protect riders’ torsos from punctures caused by direct contact with the bulls’ hooves and horns during competition. GLOVE: Bull riders only wear one glove, which is on the hand they use to grip the bull rope. This leather glove makes it easier to grip the rope and offers some measure of protection to riders’ hands and fingers. CHAPS: Riders wear chaps on their legs, and professionals often wear chaps emblazoned with logos of sponsors. Chaps offer extra protection for a rider’s legs against the hooves and horns of the bull.
Bull Riders’ Gear - Protective and Functional

any fans of sports like baseball, basketball and football enjoy wearing jerseys of their favorite players when attending a game, watching at home or gathering with fellow fans to watch somewhere in public. While it’s nearly impossible to attend a professional sporting event today without seeing someone decked out in the same attire as their favorite player, such sightings are less likely to occur within the sport of rodeo. Unlike baseball and basketball uniforms, the gear worn by many professional bull riders has more practical applications, namely to protect riders as much as possible. The following is a rundown of the gear professional bull riders wear during competition.
HEADGEAR: While many professional bull riders are allowed to wear cowboy hats during competitions, the Professional Bull Riders, Inc., mandates that all new members who turned 18 years of age on or after October 15, 2012 wear helmets. Those born before that date do not have to wear helmets, but some choose to do so to protect their heads from potentially threatening blows. In addition, bull riders can wear face masks to shield their faces and jaws from injury. VEST: A protective vest is worn by bull riders to absorb shock and dissipate any blows to the
BULL ROPE: The bull rope, which is equipped with a handle braided into the rope, is a rider’s only anchor during a ride. The rope is flat and braided from nylon or grass and goes around the bull’s girth area behind the animal’s front legs. BOOTS: Bull riders’ boots include a special spur ridge on the heel, and this helps their spurs to remain in place. Some riders wear pull-on boots, while others prefer boots that lace up. SPURS: Spurs help bull riders stay in position once the ride begins. These spurs come equipped with dull rowels, which are the revolving disks at the end of spurs. The rowels are dull so they do not injure or cut the skin of the bull. More information about bull riding is available at www.pbr.com.

Grilling a Burger Perfectly
ould any food be as simplistic and delicious at the same time as a patty of beef on top of a crusty bun, served with lettuce, tomato and your choice of condiments? Burgers are the go-to item for barbecues, campouts, fast-food meals, and late night trips to the diner. A juicy burger can satisfy so many cravings in one sitting. If ever there was a recipe to master, it would be grilling the perfect burger. Though barbecued burgers may seem easy to make, all too often burgers are botched by a few mistakes. But don’t worry, burger mastery is within reach if you follow these simple tips.
BEGIN WITH FRESH MEAT. Freshly ground meat will produce the best flavor. If you are unsure when the packaged ground beef was made, ask the butcher or someone in the meat department of the supermarket to grind you up a fresh batch. Otherwise, use a food processor or an attachment on a stand mixer to grind the meat yourself. FAT HAS FLAVOR. If you’re going to indulge in a burger, make sure it has a fair amount of fat content. Fat helps keep the burgers moist and juicy. Make sure the fat content is about 18 to 20 percent of the mix. This helps to guarantee flavorful burgers. KEEP THE MEAT COLD. Chilled burger patties will firm up and hold their shape better during cooking. Leave the pre-made patties in the refrigerator until the last minute. Keep patties on ice if you will be cooking burgers in batches. DON’T OVERHANDLE THE MEAT. Compressing the meat and handling it too much can lead to dry, dense burgers. Avoid tough meat by handling it as little as possible. Keep your hands wet while shaping the patties so they’ll come together easily.
Resist the urge to squash the burgers. Pushing down on the burgers with the spatula will only force the juices out. If you want dry burgers, press them down. If you want nice, juicy burgers, step away from the spatula.
Allow the burgers to rest. Take the burgers off the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes so that all of their juice redistributes through the patty. Toast your hamburger buns and then serve the burgers a few minutes more. This helps keep the juices with your favorite toppings. Dig in and enjoy your efforts, as well as the inside the meat and prevents your burgers compliments from other diners. from turning into burnt hockey pucks.

any communities endure harsh summers characterized by high temperatures and infrequent rainfall. In such locales, local governments typically institute water restrictions on local landowners. These restrictions limit the amount of water homeowners can use to maintain their properties, and some homeowners choose to install new irrigation systems in an effort to help their lawns and garden survive the potentially harsh summer weather. While new irrigation systems can be effective, homeowners looking for alternatives to such systems can find ways to save both water and money. Planting right is a great way to conserve water and save money, and homeowners need not be veteran landscapers to ensure their lawns and gardens survive and even thrive during warm weather. Learn about native plants & grasses. The most beautiful lawns and gardens in the dog days of summer are not necessarily those owned by the most obsessive homeowners. Instead, these homeowners might just have chosen grass and plants native to the local climate and therefore more capable of handling the ups and downs of that climate. When choosing grass and plants for your lawn, consult with a local lawn care professional if you’re hesitant to choose your own grass and plants. If you don’t want to work with a consultant, do your homework on both your property and the region where you live before making any decisions. For example, if your home is located in a region where summer drought is commonplace, then grass and plants that do not need much water might be your best option. Aerate the soil. Healthy soil can help to protect grass and plants forced to cope with harsh conditions. Aeration is a process by which soil is punctured with spikes or cores of soil are removed from the ground to improve drainage and water penetration. Operating an aerator in the yard can be challenging, so it’s often best to leave such a project to the professionals. But when planting in a garden, homeowners can turn and cultivate the soil to improve its moisture retention with a goal toward growing healthier plants. Choose the right season to plant. Some plants thrive when planted during certain times of the year, but many plants should not be planted during the summertime. When planted in the summer, plants typically need more water to establish themselves because the temperatures are hotter. Spring or fall tend to be the best seasons to plant, but homeowners can consult a local lawn and garden professional to determine the best time to plant in their specific region. Lay mulch around bushes, plants, shrubs and Mulch serves many purposes, from the practical to the aesthetic. Many homeowners find laying mulch
around their property adds to the property’s visual appeal. But mulch also is practical, helping soil to retain its moisture and reduce evaporation. In addition, mulch helps curtail the growth of weeds, which compete with existing plants for water. Make the Trees Work for You Planting trees around a lawn can not only improve the curb appeal of your home, but also trees serve
more practical purposes. When planting trees, look at trees as natural providers of shade that can lower soil temperatures and reduce moisture loss. You may want to plant trees in such a way so they provide shade to areas that tend to be hit especially hard by summer sun. Planting right to protect property from the elements and conserving water can save money and make lawns and gardens more aesthetically appealing.

How to Hike Safely
ational parks are great places for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy some of their favorite activities. Many such parks allow visitors to camp out after a day spent rafting or kayaking on the water, making these locales the ideal vacation spots for families or groups of friends who share a love of the great outdoors. Hiking is among the more popular activities enjoyed at parks across the globe. Hikers of all ages and skill levels can enjoy trails of varying degrees of difficulty, all the while taking in picturesque landscapes that often cannot be found in developed urban and suburban areas. But as much as hiking can be enjoyed even by novice outdoor enthusiasts, this rewarding activity also can be dangerous. Hikers often find themselves in remote locations where cellular phone signals tend to be weak, which can be troublesome, even when hiking in relatively crowded parks. That’s why it’s important to take the following precautionary measures when hiking.
is taking in all of the beautiful landscapes, which are easier to see during daylight hours than at night. Hiking during the day is also safer, as it’s easier for hikers to make their way on trails when they can see where they’re going than at night, when many hiking trails are cloaked in darkness. Scavenging animals also may be more prevalent after sundown. Finally, hiking also is legal during daylight hours, whereas many parks ban hiking once the sun goes down.
Share your itinerary with someone staying behind Even if you are hiking with others, it’s best to share your itinerary with someone who is not joining you on your trip. This way someone can alert authorities to you, and your fellow hikers’ direction if you get lost on a trail and cannot find your way out. When sharing your itinerary, share your schedule as well, telling friends who are staying behind to alert the authorities if you do not return or make direct contact with them by a given time.
Never hike alone. Many outdoor enthusiasts enjoy escaping from the daily grind and getting some alone time with Mother Nature. While some outdoor activities can be safely enjoyed alone, others, including hiking, should never be done without a friend in tow. There are numerous benefits to hiking in pairs or groups, not the least of which is having someone there to go for help should anyone suffer an injury on the trails. When hiking with a group or even with only a friend, make sure no one hikes faster than the slowest Start early. hiker. Know the weather forecast. When planning a hiking trip, know the weather forecast for the day or days you plan to hike. Expect cooler temperatures, even if the forecast is calling for a beautiful warm day. Hiking trails are often surrounded by tall trees, which makes it difficult for warm sunlight to illuminate trails and warm up hikers. So pack an extra jacket or coat, ideally a rain coat that can serve double duty should it start to rain. Carry water and snacks. Staying hydrated can make a long or challenging hike easier on your muscles, so be sure to bring plenty of water, which also can quench your thirst throughout your hike. Bring some snacks along as well. Snacks should provide you with energy to continue your hike, so leave behind snacks like potato chips or pretzels and pack your bags with fresh fruit, granola, protein bars, or trail mix. Hiking is a great way to enjoy the great outdoors. But even veteran hikers must take safety precautions to ensure their trips are as safe as they are enjoyable.

Shopping for a Fire Pit
People have sat around an open fire outdoors for centuries. Not only does fire provide warmth and light, but also it offers a relaxing setting for conversation and socialization. The outdoor fire pit has transformed the concept of backyard entertaining. Homeowners understand how a fire pit can add value to a home and make their yard an inviting place to be on a summer evening or a chilly autumn night. Outdoor fire pits are a relatively new creation that continue to grow in popularity. Once available strictly through specialty retailers, fire pits can now be found on the shelves of many home improvement and big box stores as well as online. Fire pits can add a lot to a home’s exterior entertaining area. Some fire pit styles and materials will last longer than others. Homeowners should assess their needs and the space available before choosing a fire pit for their home. First, homeowners must decide if they want a permanent or portable fire pit. If you are ready to make an enduring change to your yard and landscape, then a permanent fire pit is the way to go. These can be made of stone or brick and are often very durable. Permanent fire pits can be incorporated into landscape designs to create a professional patio look. They’re also some of the safer types of fire pits because they cannot be knocked over and the bricks or retaining wall construction provide a barrier around the fire. Portable fire pits are freestanding units that can be moved around the yard on a whim. They also can be loaded into the car and taken to a neighbor’s house or even to the beach. Portable fire pits are less expensive than permanent models, and some homeown-

There’s Nothing Like a Warm Fire on a Cold Night in Wyoming ers prefer a trial run with a portable pit before deciding to install a permanent structure. Portable fire pits are made of metal and usually coated with a fireproof paint. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause the metal to rust or weaken, something homeowners should consider prior to purchase. Homeowners also must consider a fuel source. Wood is a common fuel source for fire pits. Wood can be inexpensive, especially when gathered from around the yard. However, a wood-burning fire will constantly have to be fed with new branches. If you want to have a roaring fire but don’t want to maintain it, then a gas-fueled fire pit is better. Natural gas fire pits can run off of a portable propane tank (think barbecue tank) or be directly connected to a home’s natural gas supply. Now you can decide on the style. Gas fire pits will give you a greater number of design options, but there are still plenty of choices with wood fire pits. From bowl-shaped pits
to rectangular-shaped pits to barrel-style pits to chimineas, there are designs to fit most preferences and size constraints. Once you have chosen a fire pit, safety should prevail. Here are some tips to consider. • Keep the fire pit away from the home and objects that can burn. Maintain a safe distance from the fire pit at all times. • The best place to have the fire pit is on hard stone, cement or tile. Portable fire pits can be placed on patio stones in the lawn. • Use a screen to keep embers and sparks from escaping during use. • Keep children a good distance away from the fire pit and always supervise when the pit is in use. • Make sure the fire is completely extinguished before going in for the night. • Do not use any accelerants to make the fire bigger or light faster. • Buy a vinyl cover to protect the fire pit from the elements when not in use.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Explosive Knowledge You don’t have to be a SEAL to get a bang out of blowing something up! Independence Day celebrations are marked by many spectacles. But few can garner the “oohs and aahs” of a good fireworks display. Summer is a time of year when the resonating booms and bright spills of color that dot the night sky are quite common. Fireworks, which can be traced back thousands of years, have an interesting history. Many historians believe fireworks originated in ancient China as early as 200 B.C. It is thought that early fireworks were not the gunpowder-filled explosives of today, but something made from bamboo, a material native to China. Chunks of bamboo, a thick, fast-growing grass, may have been tossed onto a fire as fuel. The rods would blacken, but eventually explode in the fire, causing a loud, frightening noise. This noise was a result of trapped air and sap inside of the bamboo rods heating and expanding until the bamboo exploded under the pressure. The exploding bamboo was used to ward off animals, other people and evil spirits. Chinese alchemists eventually stumbled on a recipe for basic gunpowder, mixing together saltpeter (potassium nitrate, then a common kitchen seasoning), charcoal, sulfur, and other ingredients. This powder was packed inside of hollow bamboo rods to produce an even bigger bang. Soon paper tubes replaced the bamboo, and fireworks were used for more than just scaring away spirits, as they were routinely included in special celebrations and even deployed during military engagements. Fireworks may have begun in China, but they were soon being used around the world.
Italians had been fascinated with fireworks ever since the explorer Marco Polo brought back firecrackers from Asia in 1292. During the Renaissance in Europe, the Italians began to develop fireworks into a true art form. Since this was a period of artistic creativity and expression, many new fireworks were created. “Firemasters” were fireworks experts in medieval England. They worked with “green men,” who wore caps of leaves to protect themselves from raining sparks from the fireworks. In 1758, the Jesuit missionary Pierre Nicolas le Cheron d’Incarville, living in Beijing, wrote to the Paris Academy of Sciences about the methods and composition of fireworks, including how to make many types of Chinese fireworks. The world remains fascinated by fireworks even now. Fireworks displays have grown more elaborate over the years, requiring the skills of pyrotechnic experts, carpenters and digital sound masters. Various powders and chemicals mixed together produce a rainbow display of colors and aerial tricks that would likely have shocked the earliest firework creators. Not forgetting its origins, China continues to produce and export more fireworks than any other country in the world. Safety experts recommend the public leave fireworks to the professionals and sit back and relax during awe-inspiring pyrotechnic displays. As the United States and Canada prepare for their respective Independence Day celebrations, flashy fireworks displays are bound to be part of the festivities.

P
lanning a wedding is complicated. Once couples choose a date and location for their ceremony, they can then can get down to the nuts and bolts of the big day. When planning a wedding, many couples are governed by a budget. Budgets often get stretched, but even those brides- and grooms-to-be who spend more than they had initially hoped often find themselves not going too far over budget. One of the best ways for couples to stay within spitting distance of their budget or even come in under budget is to take steps to simplify the ceremony and reception.
Simplifying a few aspects of the wedding can save couples money without forcing them to make sacrifices that affect the look or feel of occasion. Turn floral arrangements into Multi-purpose accessories. Bridesmaids typically carry beautiful floral bouquets during the wedding ceremony. But such bouquets are quickly put down and forgotten once a couple has officially tied the knot. Couples can save a few dollars by repurposing floral bouquets and other floral arrangements used during the ceremony. Once the ceremony has ended, repurpose continued on page 45

“Simple Weddings Save” floral bouquets as centerpieces for the reception tables and turn flowers used as aisle markers during the ceremony into small centerpieces on the escort card table or place them alongside the guestbook. This saves you the trouble of choosing various floral arrangements to display throughout the reception venue and also saves you money. Scale back on the alcohol offerings. Some couples opt for a full-service, top-shelf bar at their wedding. While that’s a nice gesture, it’s also an expensive one. Couples can save a substantial amount of money by simplifying the alcoholic offerings at their reception. Instead of a full top-shelf bar, offer guests one or two choices of popular liquors such as whiskey, rum and vodka and steer clear of especially expensive brands. The majority of guests likely won’t even notice, but couples will notice how much money they save. Choose a classic cake. Elaborate cakes may be de rigueur, but the cost of an especially elaborate wedding cake can make a cost-conscious couple’s collective jaw drop. Instead of a specially designed, labor-intensive cake, choose a classic cake that won’t break the bank. Classic cakes can add an elegant touch to a wedding without extending a couple’s budget. Trim the guest list. Trimming the guest list is arguably the most effective way to simplify a wedding while simultaneously saving some money. Once you have compiled a list of potential invitees, peruse that list to determine if there are any people who can be trimmed from the list. This is easier for couples paying for their own wedding, as they

won’t feel pressured to invite any friends or colleagues of their parents whom they don’t know personally. But even couples splitting the cost of their weddings with their parents should speak with their parents about trimming the guest list to make the affair a little less expensive. Traditional weddings are anything but simple. But there are ways for couples to make planning their wedding less complicated while saving some money at the same time.
