Fourth Of Barbecue Essentials
The 4th of July is fast approaching and revelers across the nation are preparing to toast their independence with family and friends. For many Americans, backyard barbecues are synonymous with the Fourth of July, a day that, in the United States of America, commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
fare anytime soon, Fourth of July revelers often embrace the tradition of grilling up some hot dogs and hamburgers even if they tend to avoid such foods throughout the rest of the year. Hosts should not feel pressured to provide gourmet fare on July 4th, but it is a thoughtful gesture to ask guests in advance if they have any food allergies or need to avoid certain foods for other reasons.
Precious few Americans can say they have not been present at a 4th of July barbecue or witnessed a fireworks display honoring America’s official declaration of independence from Great Britain. Hosting a July 4th barbecue for the first time may have some hosts anxious about throwing a summer soirée to
Beverages It goes without saying that guests will need refreshing beverages at parties held in early July, but be sure to stock up on a variety of beverages so guests are not forced to consume drinks they don’t want. Be sure to have plenty of water available to guests, and provide sodas, iced tea and lemonade as well. Offer alcoholic beverages to adult guests, but don’t go overboard stocking up on alcohol, as that might encourage guests to overindulge.
remember, but fun is sure to be had if hosts remember to include the following backyard barbecue essentials this Independence Day. Food No Fourth of July barbecue is complete without food, so hosts should be sure to stock up on popular barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers. Though such foods likely won’t be mistaken for gourmet
Games Backyard barbecues are most fun when guests are entertained, so plan to have some games available for guests of all ages. Encourage guests to bring
July
a change of clothes or swimsuits if games will involve water or something that might soil their clothing. If you have a pool, purchase some pool games so swimmers can do more than just wade in the water or take a few laps. Plan a Wiffle® ball game for kids and dig some horseshoe pits or buy a ring toss set so adults can engage in some friendly competition as well.
Safety Though no one wants to think of a 4th of July celebration taking a turn for the worst, hosts must prepare for emergencies. Restock the first-aid kit if necessary and keep a constant eye on guests, especially children, to ensure everyone is having a safe and happy time. Program a list of local taxi companies into your phone so you can easily call for transportation should any guests have too much to drink during the festivities. Hosts should abstain from alcohol so they can serve as designated driver should the need arise at the end of the night. Backyard barbecues are a staple of July 4th, and there’s no reason your summer soirée can’t be one to remember for years to come.

KEY MOMENTS IN AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY HISTORY
Americans celebrate their independence from British rule every July Fourth. Celebrations typically include fireworks, parades and parties. While the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 was a seminal moment in both American and world history, the following are some notable events that took place in the years preceding 1776 and helped to shape the country now known as the United States of America. • 1765: The Passage of the Stamp Act marked the first major form of taxation on British colonists living in what is now America. The act imposed taxes on printed materials to help offset the costs of British troops in the colonies and replenish British debts. Colonists were upset they had no say in how taxes were levied or how the money would be spent. • 1767: After repealing the Stamp Act, Britain imposed the Townshend Acts, a series of taxes on various British goods, including tea. Again, colonists were outraged, spurring a boycott on British goods. • 1770: The Boston Massacre involved a crowd of colonists and a collection of British soldiers. The soldiers opened fire on the crowd, killing five and wounding six others. This incident helped increase anti-British sentiments in the colonies. • 1773: A few years after the Boston Massacre, colonists boarded British ships in the Boston harbor and threw the tea into the sea as protest against the Tea Act. Known as The Boston Tea Party, this event proved a catalyst for revolution.
• 1774: After the Intolerable Acts aimed to punish colonists for The Boston Tea party, delegates from 12 of the original 13 colonies met illegally to form the First Continental Congress. They convened to discuss plans for dealing with various British offenses. Congress also developed political statements against the British and urged people to boycott British goods. The first president of this congress was Payton Randolph. John Hancock was appointed president the following year after the monarchy ignored the first Congress’ petition. • 1775: The British governor of Massachusetts sent several hundred British troops to seize military supplies from the colonists at Concord. When the colonists discovered the plan, they sent their own militia to intercept the forces at Lexington. The British would win at Lexington but were defeated at Concord. Throughout 1775, many other clashes between colonists and British troops took place, eventually culminating in an event that would forever change American history. • 1776: On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, which formally proclaimed
American colonies independent from Britain. However, Britain was not willing to bend to colonists’ wishes. • 1776-1783: Several battles took place during this time period, including Moore’s Creek Bridge, Sullivan’s Island and Fort Washington. France was brought into the war in 1777. A successful sea-and-land campaign of American and French armies led to the surrender of British troops at Yorktown. • 1783: Nearly two decades after colonists began voicing their displeasure with British laws, the American Revolution formally ended on September 3, 1783 with the Treaty of Paris. The British Empire accepted defeat and recognized the independence of the United States of America.

How To Make Your Dishwasher Work Better meets up with the tub of the dishwasher, as this is a prime location for debris to gather.
The dishwasher is an unsung hero of many a kitchen. When a dishwasher is working properly, it can make fast clean-up of scores of dishes, silverware and glasses. As handy as dishwashers can be, sometimes they seem to lose their cleaning power. While inadequate cleaning may indicate the time has come to replace the dishwasher, many times all the appliance needs is a little maintenance and TLC. Begin by investigating the interior of the dishwasher. Check for any visible food particles or debris, cleaning out any food traps at the bottom of the dishwasher. The mat-like item at the bottom is called the coarse filter and is meant to catch big particles that could prevent your tub from draining. Don’t forget to clean the rubber seals around the perimeter of the dishwasher where the door
Running an empty dishwasher with a clarifying rinse can help wash away any residue and improve performance. Plus, this maintenance task can remove odors and refresh the dishwasher. Put two cups of white vinegar in the bottom of the dishwasher so that it will distribute through the appliance during the cleaning cycles. White vinegar will naturally break down old dishwasher soap and scale buildup inside of the unit. Consider a short rinse afterward with some baking soda to remove odors and scour the interior of the appliance as well. Baking soda and vinegar are popular cleaning substances and are safe to use around food items. For more intense cleaning, create a bath of vinegar and water in your sink basin. Remove parts from the dishwasher, such as shelving and the utensil holder, so that they can soak in the solution. Some dishwashers have removable spinning cleaning arms. Take these off, if possible, and let them soak to dislodge any residue that has clogged the water jets. Use a pipe cleaner or another flexible device to carefully remove any debris from the water holes. You may be amazed at what has built up in these small holes. You also may need to inspect the drain line, which is often made of plastic and connected
to the trap under the kitchen sink. On occasion, this tube can get blocked and prevent the dishwasher from draining effectively.
In addition to these cleaning techniques, using a rinse agent may help the dishwasher work better. According to Jet Dry, the maker of a popular rinse agent, rinse agents help your dishwasher rinse away residue that causes spots and film on dishes and glasses. They are designed to lower the surface tension of the water, causing it to sheet off the dishes during the final rinse. This prevents the formation of droplets of water that can remain on the surface of the dishes and form spots and film. Maintaining a dishwasher with regular cleaning can help it perform better during each and every load.

Renowned Rodeo Champions
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has produced its fair share of memorable performers over the years. One of the more prestigious honors a rodeo rider can earn is the PRCA All-Around Cowboy Champion, which is given to the rodeo competitors who are most successful in two or more events. The following are a handful of rodeo competitors to win multiple All-Around PRCA All-Around championships.
• Trevor Brazile: The record holder for most all-around titles, Brazile eclipsed former record holder Ty Murray in 2010 when he won his eighth all-around championship. The 2014 season marked the ninth straight year the Texas-born Brazile was named the PRCA All-Around Cowboy Champion. • Ty Murray: Though Murray’s record for most all-around championships has been eclipsed, he remains one of professional bull riding’s most recognizable faces, having crossed over into popular culture with appearances on television shows such as “Walker, Texas Ranger,” “WWE Raw” and “Dancing With the Stars.”
• Lewis Feild: A member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, Feild is a three-time winner of the PRCA All-Around Cowboy Championship, with three consecutive wins from 1985 to 1987. Feild’s son, Kaycee, is an accomplished rider as well.
• Tom R. Ferguson: The Oklahoma-born Ferguson is another legend of rodeo, having won six all-around championships during the 1970s. Ferguson was also something of a trailblazer in rodeo, as he was the first rodeo competitor to earn more than $100,000 in the arena in a single year, a feat he accomplished in 1978. • Larry Mahan: Upon winning the PRCA All-Around Cowboy Championship in 1970, Mahan became the first rodeo competitor to win five such championships in a row. Mahan’s 1973 comeback even garnered him some acclaim and attention in an unlikely place: Hollywood. “The Great American Cowboy,” a documentary film from Kieth Merrill, focused on Mahan’s comeback and battle with Phil Lyne for the world championship. The film would win the 1973 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
• Jim Shoulders: The first competitor to ever win the bareback, bull riding and all-around events at the PRCA Championships, Shoulders also had a successful career outside of the rodeo arena, where he was a notable presence in print and television advertisements for jeans, boots and beer.

How To Fend Off A Fruit Fly Invasion
Fruit Fly traps can help homeowners eliminate potentially problematic fruit fly infestations in a matter of days.
Homeowners who have dealt with insect infestations know that even the smallest critters can make for formidable foes. A single insect might not seem like a substantial problem, but such uninvited guests have a tendency to multiply, quickly becoming a problem for less proactive homeowners. Such is the case with fruit flies. Though small in stature, fruit flies can prove a pesky, foodcontaminating nuisance. As their name implies, fruit flies are attracted to ripening fruits, which serve as a food source and a breeding ground. Fruit flies also breed around garbage disposals, drains and garbage cans while facilitating the transmission of bacteria that can prove harmful to human health. Fortunately, homeowners can employ a combination of strategies to fend off fruit fly infestations before they take root. • Locate and eliminate poten-
tial breeding grounds. Fruit flies are seen swarming around trash cans and areas where food has been left out. According to TERRO®, an industry leader in DIY pest control products, fruit fly populations tend to be greatest during the summer and fall months, when they infest fruits during the harvest season. Pay particular attention to trash containers during these times of year, discarding trash more frequently if necessary and making sure all trash can lids are tightly closed. In addition, place ripened fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator during these times of year. • Trap flies before they can breed and multiply. Fermenting fruit or moist organic debris is necessary to complete the fruit fly life cycle. TERRO® Fruit Fly Traps, which last 30 days, employ a non-toxic, food-based liquid lure to attract and trap fruit flies. Once inside, fruit flies cannot escape, eliminating their chance to breed and
Page 23
multiply. Before placing traps, pay attention to where fruit flies tend to be most problematic and place the apple-shaped traps in those areas. “The key to successful elimination of fruit flies is to locate their breeding source and place the TERRO® Fruit Fly Trap nearby,” says TERRO® Director of Research Stew Clark. “Look for fruit fly sources in areas where unrefrigerated fruits and vegetables are stored, near garbage cans and recycling bins.” Once you identify potential breeding grounds, activate the apple-shaped trap by pulling the leaf-like lid from its base and pouring the liquid lure into the vapor chamber. Keep the lid open while the trap is in use, and you should notice a significant decrease in the number of fruit flies within a few days. • Keep a clean home. Clean homes, and tidy kitchens in particular, are less likely to be overcome with fruit fly infestations. After cooking meals, be sure to clean all surfaces with which food has come in contact. Clean any spilled drinks, since sweet and sticky beverages like soda and wine lure fruit flies. It’s also important to keep cleaning materials, such as mops and drains, clean, since fruit flies can continue to breed in soiled mops and dirty drains. Though small in stature, fruit flies can prove harmful to human health, spreading bacteria while also serving as a pesky nuisance. But while many might see fruit flies as an inevitable side effect of warmer weather, these uninvited guests can be quickly and easily eliminated. More information about TERRO® Fruit Fly Traps is available at www.terro.com.

and beat for 2 more minutes. The batter will still be slightly lumpy. To make the red cakes, measure half the batter into a separate bowl and whisk in red food coloring. Evenly transfer the red batter into 2 of the 8-inch prepared cake pans; smooth tops of batter with a spatula. Transfer half of the remaining uncolored batter into a 3rd prepared cake pan; smooth top as before. This will be the white cake portion. Add blue food coloring to the remaining uncolored batter in the large mixing bowl; fold 1 cup white chocolate chips into blue batter until combined. Transfer batter to remaining prepared 8-inch cake pan; smooth top of batter with a spatula. Bake all 4 cakes in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Remove the cakes from oven and place onto cooling racks until cooled completely. Run a knife around edge of each cooled cake. Invert cakes, remove pans, and peel off parchment paper. Use a sharp knife to trim tops of cakes flat and even. Cut both of the red cake layers and the white cake layer in half horizontally. You will have 4 thin red cake layers and 2 thin white cake layers. Place a 4-inch round stencil on top of 1 thin red cake layer; cut out a 4-inch red cake round. Repeat, placing stencil on 1 thin white cake layer to make 1 4-inch white cake round. Center the 4-inch round stencil on the blue cake; cut out and remove center portion covered by the stencil to make a blue cake ring. To assemble the cake, you will need 2 thin 8-inch red cake layers, 1 thin 8-inch white cake layer,

1 4-inch thin red cake circle, 1 4-inch thin white cake circle, and 1 blue 8-inch cake ring. Reserve the leftover thin red cake layer and other cake pieces for making crumbs for decorating. To assemble cake, place 1 8-inch thin red cake layer on a cake pan and frost the top generously with white frosting. Place the thin 8-inch white cake layer on top of the red one, and frost the top. Place remaining 8-inch thin red cake layer atop the white one. Frost the red layer. Place the blue ring cake on top of the 2nd red cake layer and carefully frost the inside of the blue cake ring. Gently fit the 4-inch white cake layer into the blue cake ring. Frost the top of the 4-inch white center. Place the 4-inch red cake layer on top of the white one. Gently press small cake circles flush with the top of the blue ring. Frost the entire outside of the cake generously with the remaining frosting. Crumble red and blue pieces of leftover cake into 2 separate bowls. Score lines into the top of the cake’s frosting with a kitchen knife to make a flag design on top of the cake. It should have a 2-inch square at the upper left for blue field and white stars, and 7 thick horizontal stripes about 1 inch wide. Fill the square field at the upper left with blue crumbs and press 1 tablespoon white chocolate chips upside-down into the blue crumbs to make ‘stars.’ Fill the bottom stripe and every other stripe with red crumbs to make red stripes. Sprinkle white sugar generously into the white stripes to make them stand out. To serve, cut cake into wedges. The inside of the cake will reveal its layers of red and white stripes and blue field with white chocolate chip stars in every slice.

Floored, Environmentally By: Kevin Bennett Mike Michael Michelson had an unfortunate name. He would have blamed his parents, but didn’t have any. It was the bureaucratic imagination of a government clerk that had done this to him. So he made the best of it and went by “triple-M” or “M-cubed”, if folks around him seemed particularly educated. But the poor guy just wasn’t popular, and he always blamed his name. So when the most beautiful woman in the world wanted to get married to Mike Michael Michelson, he was completely into it.

Everything seemed just fine, until they had to redo the flooring of the kitchen in their new house, and it turned out Jeane Juliet Jenner-Michelson was more concerned about being environmentally friendly than matrimonially satisfied. If the floors weren’t eco-friendly, then the penguins of Antarctica would get skincancer from the holes in the ozone layer and Smoky the Bear would stand by the side of the highway and cry at motorists with an Indian headdress while the wolves went extinct, or something. Mike couldn’t be sure; Jeane tended to get dramatic when she was mad. But he didn’t know a single thing about environmentally friendly flooring, or if there even was such a thing! So Mike did some research to see what he could find. Cork was a clean candidate for green floors; the trees didn’t have to be cut down, but could be harvested over time. But he wanted a few different options, so he could maybe get Jeane to see reason. Mike kept looking and found that bamboo is also an environmentally “clean” flooring solution, and has a great long-term track record—plus it came in a variety of shades. Then there was linoleum—Mike didn’t even know linoleum was an environmentally friendly solution! There were a lot of environ“Super prompt! Also have a mentally friendly carpet options too, but very handy email notification those wouldn’t do for the kitchen. So system. It only took one day to he had bamboo, cork, and linoleum— get my suit cleaned!” but then there was another problem. - Brock S. Mike Michael Michelson lived in Gillette Wyoming. Where could he possibly find

such flooring options without having to travel halfway around the world? Then he found Carpet Express Direct of Gillette. With the closest rates to wholesale of any flooring organization in northeastern Wyoming, Mike was able to find all the green flooring solutions he had been after, and at a great price. They had cork, linoleum, bamboo—even environmentally friendly carpet, which maybe Jean could use in the basement. And what surprised him most was the specials. There was a product called Harris Cork that was only $4.99/square foot, and came with a fifteen year warranty. And then there was bamboo at the same $4.99/square foot rate, but number-one grade and with a twenty-five year warranty. Shoot, the way Jeane was going, that might even outlast the marriage!
Mike managed to get out of the doghouse with Carpet Express Direct of Gillette, but he isn’t the only one. With flooring options across the spectrum, from carpet to LVP to hardwood, bamboo, cork, and more, it’s easy to see why Carpet Express Direct has given so many couples peace. Or at least brought them to a cease-fire. Drop by Carpet Express Direct of Gillette for bargains on all kinds of flooring solutions today!

Ways Pets Could Improve Personal Health to a National Health Interview Survey, 75 percent of the general population experiences at least “some stress” every two weeks, and many times that stress is moderate to severe. Research has indicated that when people spend time with a pet their levels of cortisol, a hormone associated with stress, is lowered while their level of serotonin, a hormone associated with improved mood and well-being, is increased.
Rather than heading to the pharmacy for solutions to common ailments, a majority of people may be able to stop at the nearest pet store or animal shelter and find a finned or furry remedy instead. Studies that link positive health benefits to pet ownership abound. According to WebMD, one study found that 48 stockbrokers who adopted a pet experienced lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than did people who did not own pets. Another study found that individuals suffering from serious diseases, such as cancer or AIDS,are far less likely to experience depression if they have a strong tie to a pet. Plus, pets have proven beneficial to seniors struggling with loneliness. Any pet can try a person’s patience at times, expecially when a kitty has used a sofa as a scratching post or when a pooch needs to be let into the yard at 3 a.m. But for many pet owners, the benefits of having a pet far outweigh the negatives. Here are some of the many ways that pet ownership can be good for your health. * Lower blood pressure: Petting a dog or cat can lower blood pressure, as can watching a fish swim around a tank. Those with hypertension may want to purchase or adopt a companion animal to help lower their blood pressure. * Reduce stress: Stress is something people face on a daily basis. According
* Lower cholesterol: Lifestyle factors associated with pet ownership, particularly a focus on increased physical health and activity, can help lower cholesterol levels. Also, having a pet works to reduce stress, which may keep individuals from looking to fatty foods as sources of alleviating anxiety. * Fight depression: Many therapists have prescribed pet therapy as a method to alleviating and recovering from depression. A pet is an unconditional friend and can provide that listening ear a person needs to talk through problems. Also, walking and taking care of a pet devotes attention away from problems and inward thinking. * Improve physical activity levels: Heading to the gym is one way to get a workout, but spending an hour walking the dog or tossing around a ball for a game of chase and fetch is another way to get the heart pumping. Many dog owners benefit from the “forced”exercise that goes with daily walks. Some people choose to exercise with their pets, enjoying the companionship and the physical activity. *Reduce stroke incidences: There has been evidence that cat owners are less likely to suffer strokes than people who do not have cats. Researchers are not sure of the connection, but surmise that cats have a more calming nature than other types of pets. * Greater opportunities for socialization: Humans are social animals and need to interact with others. Pet owners have a tendency to want to share time and experiences with other pet own-
Page 31
ers. Pets can provide opportunities for people to get together. * ADHD therapy: Children and adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder often benefit from working with a pet or having a pet as a family companion. Playing with a pet is a great way to release excess energy and focus on tasks. Also, a pet with his or her unconditional love can help someone with ADHD overcome self-esteem issues. Similar results are possible when pets are used as therapy animals for children with autism and other behavioral disabilities. * Reduce propensity for allergies: Children who grow up in homes with cats and dogs are less likely to develop common allergies and even asthma, research suggests. In fact, children who live around two or more dogs or cats before their first birthday are less likely to have allergies of any sort, according to a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. Research presented at the 10th International Conference on Human Animal Interaction found pet owners were the least likely to have to visit the doctor. The survey of more than 11,000 respondents from Australia, China and Germany found that over a five-year period pet owners made 15 to 20 percent fewer annual visits to the doctor than non-pet owners. The companionship and love pets provide could be a key benefit in promoting good personal health.

End Of Summer Travel Tips
Summer is a season beloved by many. Warm air, time off from school and summer hours at the office make the months of June, July and August some of the most relaxing weeks of the year. Unfortunately, like all seasons, summer must eventually come to a close. But even as summer’s end draws near, there is still time to squeeze in one last summer trip. The following are a few tips for travelers who simply can’t say “so long” to summer without one more warm weather excursion.
* Find a deal on lodging. You can still find a deal on lodging even if your end-of-summer trip is a spur of the moment affair. In
fact, you might have a better chance of finding a deal if you wait until the last minute than you would have if you booked months in advance. That’s especially true if you are planning a weekend getaway to a beachside community. Such communities typically boast significant inventories of summer rentals, and recognizing that the final weeks of summer are their last opportunities to generate rental income, owners of such rentals are often inclined to lower their prices if they have not yet rented their units. Renters who don’t mind waiting until the last minute to book their waterfront escape might just find that their patience pays off with big discounts.
* Be flexible. Flexibility is another friend to men and women booking end-of-summer getaways. If you have vacation days to spare, consider traveling midweek instead of on Friday or Saturday, as you might find more affordable flights and/or lodging if you travel on days when many people will be in their offices. In addition, traveling midweek is a great way to avoid the traffic jams and crowded airports and train stations that have become
a staple of summer weekend travel.
* Don’t stray too far. If your trip is truly a last-minute affair, then you might want to set your sights on a destination that’s close to home. A lastminute flight to a land far away can break the bank, and booking trips at the last minute may mean you have to travel during off-peak hours when it can be less convenient and enjoyable to get away. If traveling far and wide will put too great a dent in your finances or find you dealing with long layovers, then consider a place closer to home so you can spend more time relaxing and less time traveling. * Keep it simple. The vacation of a lifetime at the end of summer can make for a memorable experience, but keep in mind that end-of-summer trips are often seen as one final opportunity to unwind and enjoy the relaxing nature of summer. If your trip is filled with sightseeing and other activities, you may feel exhausted by the time you return and never get the lastminute respite from the daily grind that you were hoping your end-of-summer excursion would provide. * Pack light. While it’s important to pack all of the little things you need every day, when packing for an end-of-summer getaway try to pack light. If the weather figures to be warm, you won’t need to pack any coats, jackets or even long pants. Packing light fits the theme of a relaxing summer getaway and allows you to avoid waiting at baggage claim or stressing out over how to cram everyone’s luggage into the trunk of your car. End-of-summer trips make for a great end to a beloved time of year.

Psalm 16:5 - 16:11 New International Version
Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
