Did You Know?

Baby Boomers make up the largest generation of Americans born in United States history. Boomers include anyone born between the years 1946 and 1964, as the number of births began to rise when World War II veterans returned home from battle. The greatest number of Baby Boomers were born in 1957, when numbers peaked at 4,300,00. That equates to roughly 8 children born per minute throughout the year. By 2019, the last of the Baby Boomers, or those born in 1964, will be eligible for many senior benefits offered to people age 55 and up. Ten years later, most will be eligible for retirement.

Add Value To Your Home With These Renovations

· Renovate the HVAC system. Aesthetic improvements aren’t the only ones that add value to a home. Many home buyers are eager to purchase a home that has a new heating and cooling system, as buyers understand that furnaces and air conditioning units are substantial investments that can last for years. Other improvements, such as adding attic insulation or replacing older windows and doors with more energy efficient options, are also smart bets. · Add illumination to rooms. A dark home is a dreary home. Adding light can mean including more overhead and accent lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting is a nice touch. Inclusion of skylights and sun tubes can bring natural light into rooms that may not have south or west facing windows.

Homeowners choose renovation projects for a variety of reasons. Although many improvements are made to increase functionality and comfort of a home, several others are seen as worthwhile investments. These investments can add up to a higher resale value when the time comes to sell a home. Certain projects have a history of providing a greater return on homeowners’ investments than others. The following renovation tips can add beauty to your home and generate great returns when you put the home up for sale. · Invest in your kitchen. Kitchen remodels are a safe bet when it comes to putting money into improving a home. Residents tend to spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, but a dated, poorly functioning kitchen can detract from the value of a home, even if the rest of the home is in good shape. It’s possible to recoup between 60 and 120 percent of your kitchen remodel investment, especially if the kitchen matches up well with the rest of your home. Home-

owners should know that a deluxe renovation may not be necessary, as relatively moderate improvements can create a whole new look for a kitchen. · Look to paint. One of the least expensive improvement materials, but one that has a significant impact, is paint. Neutral, modern colors can easily liven up any space. If you paint with low-VOC paint, you also can advertise an eco-friendly home, which is very desireable these days. · Put in another bathroom. Multiple bathrooms are an attractive selling point, particularly in older homes that may not have been equipped with more than one bathroom. Finding extra space for a bathroom can be tricky, but consider closets, areas under stairs or even taking some space away from another room. Popular home-improvement television channel HGTV advises that half-bathrooms require at least 18 square feet of space, while full baths need 30 to 35 square feet for a standup shower or bathtub.

· Put a deck addition outdoors. Outdoor living spaces have become more desireable, especially as the “staycation” has grown in popularity. Decks and patios can make backyards more appealing. The scope of your investment will depend on the size of the deck and design. Doing the work yourself can cut the cost of decks in half, but only if you have the specific tools or experience to tackle such a project. · Improve curb appeal. Adding attractive landscaping and freshening up the entryway to a home can add considerable value to your home, as buyers judge homes by their exteriors. Completely renovated interiors may never be seen if buyers pass up your home because of a less attractive exterior. Classy, subtle changes, like well-placed shrubbery and a green lawn, can work wonders. An inviting front door and well-lit entryway also add curb appeal to a home. Before making improvements, homeowners should determine if a given project will provide a solid return on their investment.

You’re not alone or beyond hope, and hard water can be softened as easy as dialing a phone number. Western Water Conditioning of Gillette has made it their mission to make it easy for anyone to enjoy the benefits of conditioned water. According to westernwater.net, here’s how it works: “The most common method of treating for water hardness is to use an ion exchange water softener. A water softener removes hardness by passing water through water softening resin. As water containing hardness, made up of calcium and magnesium ions (atoms with an electrical charge) passes through the resin, the calcium and magnesium are attracted to the resin and exchanged for a chemically equivalent amount of sodium or potassium.” The result of all that technical information is softer water that leaves skin & hair more beautiful, clothes softer, and your bathroom cleaner. The process is affordable, too. Western Water Conditioning offers rentals as well as rent-to-own deals. (Though if you’d like to buy, you’re more than welcome to!) So give your skin a break! Give the linoleum a break; and let your clothes be as soft as they were when they were new. Just dial Western Water Conditioning and watch your life get comfy!

Snow Clearing 101 --Q: I just moved to Ohio from the south and have never experienced lots of snow before. This winter has certainly changed that! Make the Hardwood Switch! By: Kevin Bennett

Easter is just around the corner. The kids know that bunny’s coming with a belly full of eggs and treats just waiting for them. Visions of chocolate coins and jellybeans dance through their heads as the family returns from church. Like a rifle shot they explode from the car and commence to searching every nook and cranny of the yard and house for pastel-colored rabbit droppings. Almost as soon as it began, the hunt is over; each child coming to rest in front of the TV with a woven basket chock-full of candy and treats. They try and keep most of the mess on their clothes or faces, maybe in their hair—but some of those jellybeans and chocolates are just bound to escape. Like jailbirds enduring a life sentence, they’re always looking for an angle. And so by evening, as the kids jump off the couch for dinner, several Steve McQueen-ish chocolate ne’er-do-wells slide off the couch and into the carpet, where they hope to melt into the fibers and become one with the shag. Everything is going great, until the next day when warden Mom finds black spots all over where the kids have been and has an unfiltered conniption!

This kind of flooring tragedy is completely avoidable, and even affordable! At Carpet Express Direct of Gillette Wyoming there exists a variety of hardwood and Luxury Vinyl Plank options. From Laminate to Tile to Vinyl, there isn’t a non-carpet option you’ll be without! And these options are infinitely customizable. From the website, carpetexpressdirect.com: “Hardwood flooring provides a choice of colors as unique as the wood itself; a floor that can reflect the individual

tastes and lifestyle of the owner; a floor that can be maintained quickly and easily by use of today’s stateof-the-art maintenance products, and a floor that can be sanded and refinished to change color so home owners can always be color coordinated with new floor covering, color and trends.” And there are many other reasons to make the transition from carpet to hardwood. Carpet, over time, accumulates mass. When bits of skin or dandruff or grit fall into the carpet, it is oftentimes caught within the fibers woven so tightly together; and that is where it stays. A carpet, over several years, can double or even triple in weight from such conditions. So even if your carpet looks clean on the surface, beneath you will find a festering community of filth and corruption; just like slums in any big city. Of Course, Carpet Express Direct also sells carpeting options that are resistant to these trends. For example: from Bliss Flooring there is now available a feature specifically designed to reduce the grunge a carpet can accumulate over time. This is called the Silver Release anti-microbial treatment; and it comes built in to reduce the growth of bacteria. So there are certainly options available if the push to hardwood floors is too much of a transition. But don’t forget laminate, LVP and sheet vinyl as well! In fact, Carpet Express Direct has a variety of discounts on these items at this very moment! From New Mexico White Sand Vinyl starting at just $1.99 per sq. foot, to Bonnie Plank LVP at just $3.99 per sq. foot! There is no end to the variety and sustainability of the options available at Carpet Express Direct, and no reason you should endure the same old chocolate-and-bacteria-soaked floor until the end of time. Come see for yourself today!

ST. PATRICK: SEPARATING THE TRUTH FROM LEGEND Young Patrick was careless and not as spiritual as he eventually became. At 16, Patrick was captured by a band of pirates and was sold to a chieftain in an area of Northern Ireland. His labor included tending flocks of sheep. It was during his time of captivity that Patrick found God and decided to devote his life to professing the faith and grace of Christ. He acquired the Irish dialect of the Celtic language in captivity, which would prove essential in his future work. Few saints are as well-known and widely celebrated as St. Patrick. Known as the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick annually inspires people from around the world to pay homage to his legend, which includes bringing Christianity to Ireland. Revelers don green clothing, participate in parades and decorate with shamrocks and symbols of Irish folklore. Much of what is known about St. Patrick is shrouded in mystery and legend. Patrick has been credited with many miracles, including converting an entire country to Christianity from paganism, and also participated in many spiritual resurrections. While neither Patrick’s birth nor death dates are known with certainty, it is believed he was born in 373 A.D. in an area of Roman Britain, which is now Scotland. Patrick was not Irish, but a British Celt.

After six years of captivity, Patrick escaped and returned to his homeland, where he immersed himself in the scriptures and fully committed to Celtic Christianity, not the Roman Catholicism that became dominant throughout the Roman Empire. He spent years studying and preparing for life as a missionary. Through historical documents written in his own hand, Patrick says he was “called to be a servant in Christ to a foreign land.” He began evangelizing, but it wasn’t until around his 30th birthday in 405 A.D. that Patrick set out for Ireland. Patrick established schools and monasteries in Ireland because he believed education and faith were closely entwined. He taught many people, including his most famous student, Columba. While St. Patrick is credited

with many miracles, such as driving snakes out of Ireland, some historians believe these tall tales were just metaphors for pushing out paganism. Other miracles included feeding starving sailors with a herd of pigs that appeared when the sailors had faith in God. Some legends even suggest St. Patrick brought animals and people back to life. Many also associate St. Patrick with the shamrock. By using a three-leaf clover, St. Patrick was able to convey the concept of the Holy Trinity to a land of people familiar with the shamrock symbol. The supposed day of St. Patrick’s death, March 17th, was officially recognized as St. Patrick’s Day. In reality, St. Patrick was never officially canonized a saint by the Catholic Church and received the title in name only. At the time of his death, there was no official process for canonization, but Patrick was given the title by popular acclaim and likely with the approval of a bishop. St. Patrick is widely acclaimed and celebrated throughout the world, and his life is even more interesting than many of the legends associated with his name.

• Do you have a screw loose ... in your eyeglasses? This is an easy fix. Paint the screw with a dab of clear nail polish and quickly re-screw. It works like glue. Dab the top of the screw for a little extra insurance. • “Snow will better slide off a shovel that has been sprayed with furniture polish.” -- T.L. in Minnesota • Here’s an old tip, but a good one: Before going away on vacation, put a couple of ice cubes in a plastic baggie, and set it at the front of the freezer. When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. • To temporarily get a winter frost effect on a window, use this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your window pane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don’t want to be clear but also don’t want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water. • “If you get a residue inside your coffee cups when they go through the dishwasher, it might be time to give your machine a once-over. In the meantime, spray the insides of the coffee cups with a bleach-based cleaner like 409 just before your turn it on. That should help.” -- E.T. in Michigan • Cut your kitchen sponge in half, or even thirds. You can clean just as well with a smaller sponge, and you will extend its life, saving you money. A smaller sponge dries out more quickly, too.

How Shopping Locally Can Help You And Your Community

Today’s consumers have more shopping options at their disposal than they did in years past. Though the Internet may put the world at one’s fingertips, more and more shoppers are discovering that buying locally makes for a superior shopping experience. The benefits associated with shopping locally are many, and the following are just a few reasons why shoppers may want to look no further than their own communities when planning their next shopping excursions. Keeps Money In The Local Economy Locally-owned businesses often put a larger share of their revenue back into their communities. Small business owners may be more inclined

to employ local residents, giving more people in the community solid employment. Business owners may reach out and support other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising initiatives for charities and schools. By shopping at local stores, you have a hand in supporting these efforts as well.

Save Money When factoring in travel time and the cost of fuel, shopping locally makes more sense than driving to a faraway mall. In addition, repeat customers who establish a rapport with a local business owner may find that such owners are more inclined to price match or work with loyal customers to find lower prices through suppliers. Diversify Your Home And Lifestyle Shoppers who prefer more unique styles may find local businesses cater to their needs better than large chain stores. Larger retailers offer the same products to customers regardless of where those customers live, so a person in California may be decorating his or her home with the same furnishings as a person in North Carolina. But local shops tend to produce more unique items that are not available nationwide. Promote entrepreneurship

Small businesses are an essential element to the country’s economic growth. By shopping locally, consumers are showing their support for this important segment of the national economy.

Help Establish Local Pride Independent shops contribute to the fabric of a community and what makes it special and unique. Tourists and other visitors will be much more

inclined to remember a local shop rather than a big chain in a particular neighborhood. When travelers want to get a feel for a community, they seek out small, local stores that are much more likely to stock a high percentage of locallysourced goods. Attract Other Businesses Private and public sector businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores. Should a local store be successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other businesses may move in as well. Shopping locally benefits consumers in various ways, many of which contribute to a healthy local economy.

Local Firm Wo r l d w i d e Franchise Leader Gillette Wyoming is a unique town with hard working folks that do a good job not only by local standards, but by international ones as well. Tabatha Burton at ERA Priority Real Estate gives us the scoop: “This Week the ERA Franchise’s IBC (International Business Conference) was held in Washington DC. Our franchise was number one for AGC (Adjusted Gross Commissions) with between one and twenty-five agents, worldwide. We were number three for an ERA branch with between one and fifty agents.” This particular franchise has been owned by Sherry McGrath since the late eighties, but as of last year the chalice was passed to her son Josh McGrath, and with the National Franchise’s change in logo, Mr. McGrath worked with ERA’s top-of-the-line staff to create a new name for the local company. But it’s the same location, and the same great folks. For your Real Estate needs, make your way to ERA Priority Real Estate, our very own worldwide industry leader.

Stray From The Standard Cuisine This St. Patrick’s Day While St. Patrick’s Day may now be most quickly associated with parades and green beer, for many celebrants the day also marks a chance to indulge in Ireland’s native cuisine.

When asked to think of Irish cuisine, many people might immediately think of corned beef and cabbage or even the versatile potato. But the Emerald Isle is rich in culinary history, and some might be surprised to learn Irish cuisine is about more than just the staples served on St. Patrick’s Day. For those who want to try their hand at something new this year, consider the following recipe for “Cider-Braised Chicken and Cabbage” from Margaret M. Johnson’s “The Irish Pub Cookbook” (Chronicle Books).

Snow Clearing 101 --Q: I just moved to Ohio from the south and have never experienced lots of snow before. This winter has certainly changed that! I’ve learned why newscasters warn us to be careful shoveling. It’s exhausting, and the snow is much heavier than I thought. Is there any way to make it easier? -- Carol in Cleveland A: Managing the snow around your home -- during really snowy winters like this one, it’s more about shifting snow piles around than shoveling -- can be a lumbering ballet. To minimize the amount of physical work you have to do, planning has to start before the storm. First, determine what areas outside absolutely must be cleared. These include your driveway and walkway to the front door, and any vents to the outside -- like the dryer vent, and in some homes, the heating unit’s vent. In some cities, you’re also required to clear the public sidewalk in front of your house. Homeowners often mark out these areas with tall orange fiberglass stakes, set a few feet apart along the perimeter of the driveway and next to vent areas. If you have health issues and no one else to shovel, consider hiring a snowplow service. (Plow contractors operate without much regulation, if any, so get word-of-mouth references, check out reviews on Angie’s List and get all proposals in writing first.) Now to the shoveling. It’s best to start clearing snow as soon as possible, because the longer it sits on the ground, the more it settles and the heavier it gets. You may need to go out and shovel in the middle of a storm, once 3-6 inches have fallen, to make clearing easier once the storm is over. Efficient snow shoveling is more like snow scooping. Use a proper snow shovel -- wide, slightly curved and very light. Push snow to the side as much as possible and avoid lifting the shovel until you absolutely have to. After a heavy storm you will find yourself having to lift new snow over existing piles alongside the walkway or driveway. Load the shovel only one-third full and -- bending your knees -- lift the shovel and toss the snow over the perimeter pile with the minimum motion required. No turning or flinging the shovel upward. Even with a minimum of motion, shoveling is hard work. So stop frequently to catch your breath and stretch your back. Be sure to stretch for a few minutes when you’re done, and while you’re doing it, think deep thoughts about getting a snowblower.

HOME TIP: Can’t move your car to a covered area before a storm? Cover it to make clearing snow easier, or at least lift the windshield wipers to an upward position so —23— they don’t freeze to the windshield.

REMODELING SPENDING INCREASES Renovations Are On The Rise the National Association of Home Builders, as of November 2014, a greater number of remodelers reported higher business activity than during the previous quarter. Remodeling spending has been gradually climbing back up from the all-time low it reached in 2009. This growth in home renovations has led to more jobs for carpenters, plumbers, painters, electricians, and other construction workers. In Massachusetts alone, a recovery in overall construction employment has led to a gain of about 18,000 jobs during the past four years.

In the not-so-distant past, home improvement projects all but came to a halt, as homeowners were weary about investing any money into fixer-uppers. But the tides have changed dramatically in recent months, and homeowners are again ready and willing to invest big dollars into home renovations. Renewed confidence in the economy and an upswing in the real estate market have contributed to the remodeling frenzy. In early 2014, the Joint Center for Housing Statistics of Harvard University forecasted nearly $150 billion in major remodeling spending over the year. JCHS said as homeowners gain more confidence in the housing market, they’re more likely to undertake home improvements they would have avoided in recent years. While the numbers do not yet match pre-recession remodeling spending, the number of construction projects has steadily trended upward. According to

The Home Improvement Research Institute expects an additional 5.8 percent sales growth in home improvement spending in 2015. States that showed the highest levels of home improvement spending in 2014 are likely to continue to hold the top spots through 2015, and the National Association of Home Builders says these areas include the District of Columbia, Connecticut,

New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, and areas of southern California. Americans are not the only ones increasing their home spending. According to reports released by Moneris Solutions Corporation, Canada’s largest credit and debit card processor, purchases at home improvement stores rose by 8.49 percent over the same period last year, and spending on plumbing and heating equipment and electrical contractors climbed by 5.14 percent and 5.08 percent, respectively. Spending patterns indicate that homeowners are investing in DIY projects as well as seeking specialized work provided by professional contractors. Now is a good time for the real estate and home improvement sectors, as homeowners have renewed their fervor for making home renovations, both to increase comfort in their homes and make their homes more buyer-friendly.

Drake Nelson comes from a family of

performers. His family, on his mother’s side, was a touring musical group in the 1960’s and 1970’s, performing all over the country, while maintaining a healthy dose of drugs and alcohol in their systems. Drake learned about public speaking watching his parents tell wild and mostly true stories during Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In his twenties, he chased a dream of entering the world of Professional Wrestling, and when a career-ending injury took that away, he went back to college, receiving a degree in TV production. After producing wrestling television all over the West coast, he decided to walk away from that, and pursue another goal, Stand Up Comedy. A product of the 1980’s, Drake would watch and soak in comedy where ever he could, from the HBO Specials starring George Carlin, and Sam Kinision, to the 30 minute specials seen all over cable in the 1990’s. He has a wide variety of style in his comedy, from self-deprecating humor, to observational, back to sex, and long, funny stories, drawn from life experiences. Drake has been seen on VICE, Hotel Impossible and The Tom Green Show.

was born in Evanston, Illinois, on the North side of Chicago...early on, his family moved to Southern California. Flyn started playing guitar at age 11 and did his first gig at age 13. He was part of a few bands in high school and graduated from Thousand Oaks High. He went on to Moorpark College and graduated from L.A. Valley College with an AA degree in journalism. He then was offered a scholarship to Pepperdine University. In 1973, Huck met up with actor/director/choreographer, Kenny Ortega (High school Musical I, II, III, This is it, Dirty Dancing) and together they worked on the script and soundtrack to Ortega’s brain child, “Bimbo’s Cosmic Circus,” an off Broadway Rock musical about a clown in a circus who wanted to be a rock star. They performed it at the Starwood in Hollywood, and The off Broadway theatre in San Diego. After the play closed, Flyn formed a band and rocked in his hometown of Thousand Oaks, five nights a week. In 1977, while attending a L.A. Kings hockey game, he met and became friends with Chuck Barris. He wound up doing several Gong Shows and a Dating Game. In 1985 Huck Flyn, joined the “Otis Day and the Knights” tour in New York in which Dewayne Jesse reprised his “ANIMAL HOUSE” role on the road. Huck Flyn performed on Knots Landing in 1987 and shortly after, while visiting a comedy club in the Bay area, he ran into a couple old friends, Marty Cohen, and Bruce Baum, and together with people like Vic Dunlop, the unknown comic, Bill Engvall, Henry Cho and others, he got to do guest sets at clubs around the area... he became a regular on the comedy circut and the crowds immediately took to him. He quickly started working all over the state and then the country. He started at places like the Punch Line, The Comedy Underground, the Riviera Hotel in Vegas and various clubs and colleges all across the USA!”

Tired?

22

God sits high above the round ball of the earth. The people look like mere ants. He stretches out the skies like a canvas - yes, like a tent canvas to live under. 23 He ignores what all the princes say and do. The rulers of the earth count for nothing. 24 Princes and rulers don’t amount to much. Like seeds barely rooted, just sprouted, they shrivel when God blows on them. Like flecks of chaff, they’re gone with the wind. 25 “So - who is like me? Who holds a candle to me?” says The Holy

One. 26 Look at the night skies: Who do you think made all this? Who marches this army of stars out each night, counts them off, calls each by name - so magnificent! So powerful! - and never overlooks a single one? 27 Why would you ever complain, oh Jacob, or, whine, Israel, saying, “God has lost track of me. He doesn’t care what happens to me?” 28 Don’t you know anything? Haven’t you been listening? God doesn’t come and go. God lasts. He’s Creator of all you can see or imagine.

He doesn’t get tired out, doesn’t pause to catch his breath. And he knows everything, inside and out. 29 He energizes those who get tired, gives fresh strength to dropouts. 30 For even young people tire and drop out, young folk in their prime stumble and fall. 31 But those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don’t get tired, they walk and don’t lag behind. Isaiah 40: 22-31 The Message translation
