Former Virtual School Students: WIN NATIONAL AWARDS

Students Selah Jordan and Grace Anderson were named Wyoming’s top High School Youth Volunteers of 2016 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. As State Honorees, these students will receive a $1000 award, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for themselves and a parent, where a series of national recognition events will be attended.

For over a decade, Grace has helped her family prepare gift-filled shoeboxes for children in need as part of Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a program run by an international relief organization called Samaritan’s Purse. “I am passionate about helping children,” she said.

“I took for granted that others knew about OCC shoeboxes, but when I talked to people I was surprised to learn many had never heard about them before.”

Page 7

FCCLA conference last fall, which filled 368 shoeboxes. “The boxes, containing toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and a stuffed animal, not only show desperate children that someone cares about them, but also help people understand what life is like in places where many kids have never received a gift,” said Grace.

Grace decided she needed to make others aware of how they could help. To educate fellow students about the project, she organized a school assembly featuring a skit she wrote, then distributed a list of suggested gift items and invited all attendees to a “packing party.” Grace also sought help from county 4-H clubs through a presentation and a newsletter, and started getting assistance and donations from community members after a local newspaper published a story on her project. In addition, Grace held a packing party for delegates at a state

Selah Jordan

Grace Anderson During the trip five high school students will be named National Honorees to receive additional $5,000 awards, gold medallions, crystal trophies and $5,000 grants for the charities of their choice. Based on the number of volunteer hours they also receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award certificate and a letter from the President. Grace is currently a Virtual School student and was nominated by Crook County 4-H in Sundance. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, now in its 21st year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Both girls had attended Campbell County Virtual School (CCVS) in Gileltte, Wyoming. After interviewing Grace we found out that she is currently a sophomore at Wyoming Virtual Academy, She had recruited students, fellow 4-Hers, and state wide FCCLA members to fill 600 shoeboxes with gifts for children in third-world countries, war zones and areas hit by natural disasters.

We are a family owned and operated business with locations in Colorado and Wyoming.

DIY Dining Room

Finished Basement Win

Gorgeous decor, trim and paint all make this room transform beautifully!

Here is an example of what an unfinished basement can be! Really inspiring!

An Exterior to Amaze

Nice Kitchen Renovation

OK, obviously this took a lot more than simply updating the exterior of this dilapidated home, but we thought it was awesome how this home was restored, instead of just torn down.

We really like the light colors and custom island! This kitchen goes from disaster to dream in 1 renovation. See it on our board “Before and After Home Renovation.”

Boho - Chic Bathroom We love the transformation that was made to this 70’s style bathroom! New vanity and sink, new flooring, a vintage mirror and some rustic touches really make it fresh and cozy. The addition of a window also brought some much needed natural lighting. See it all on our Pinterest page!

Tips For Safer Renovations

Home renovation projects vary in scope. Something as simple as repainting a bedroom counts as a renovation project, as does a full kitchen remodel. But no matter how big or small a project, homeowners’ top priority should always be safety. Before beginning a project, make a list of possible hazards and how to avoid them. Here are some potential dangers that can spring up. • Asbestos: Many homes built when asbestos was legal still contain asbestos materials. Asbestos has been used in many applications, such as in ceiling materials, insulation, siding, and more. That’s because asbestos is flame retardant and serves as an effective and inexpensive insulator. However, asbestos fibers released into the air during renovations can cause respiratory problems and even lead to lung cancer. Asbestos needs to be removed under specific guidelines and disposed of properly. Disposal typically requires hiring a professional service.

• Dust and dirt: Sanding, sawing, welding, and other home renovation tasks can cast debris into the air. Ventilation may be needed to maintain clean, breathable air. Ventilation can also shuttle any harmful fumes generated from construction materials outside of the home. Do-it-yourselfers should wear masks and eye protection to guard themselves against debris. • Electrical lines: All homes may not have been built in adherence to modern-day codes. Electric lines can be discovered where they are least expected. When doing demolition or drilling/nailing into walls, it’s not uncommon to come across electrical wires. Extra caution needs to be taken, and an electrician should be consulted if the wires need to be relocated. • Chemicals: Chemicals, such as sealants, cleaners, lubricants, and fuel, may be used during renovation projects. Such substances can be dangerous to pets and children if they are touched or accidentally ingested. Exercise extreme caution when using chemical products, making sure all product containers are sealed and kept out of reach when not in use. • Tools: Cuts, abrasions, burns and more can result when power tools and even manual tools are used incorrectly. Learn how to use tools before beginning a project, and always put tools away when work is done for the day. • Falls: Falls are a leading cause of household injury, and the chance of a fall may increase when climbing ladders during home improvement projects. Don’t climb beyond where indicated on ladders and always have a spotter on hand when climbing is necessary. Wear harnesses, sturdy footwear and gloves as well.

Syrupy Shag and The Teenage Scourge

Find us on the Home Show Map on page 25

By: Kevin Bennett

The basement was thick with a green carpet installed no earlier than the sixties. You could tell, because if you stood in one place too long, you’d start to sink. No one knew how many had been lost in the endless fibers of the basement shag, but the man of the house had hinted at mounting an expedition to find out. It all came to a head one Friday in March when a blizzard decided springtime had no right to impose itself on Wyoming’s two seasons. For decades it had been winter, and then summer/fall; but this year the spring had tried to get a jump on summer. Winter was having none of it and scared the life out of any groundhogs that dared stick their noses out of burrows not covered with thigh-thick snowdrifts. As a result, the teenagers of the house were compelled to play indoor games and spill things on the basement shag, just as God intended. If teenagers didn’t make messes, their parents would be too self-satisfied and complacent! Certainly Johnny Halvorson didn’t think his overreaction to a video game loss would cause his arms to spasm into Nick’s two-liter of cream soda, and neither of the boys figured the syrupy mess would leak into the shag carpet and stink up the basement. Sure, they tried to clean it up, but the stain remained, and soon mother noticed. Not one for subtlety, she immediately let her face explode and the boys, chagrined, scampered to Johnny’s room where they hoped to avoid the conniption storm furiously trying to clean the basement.

STARR Communication

Unbeknownst to the boys, as Mother Halvorson cleaned, no end of disgust and filth revealed itself between the fibers of that nasty shag. There were things in the carpet that hadn’t been discovered since Kennedy, and now were clogging up the vacuum. Finally she’d had enough, and stomped upstairs to give Father Halvorson a piece of her mind.

STARR Communication Thankfully, Mr. Halvorson had begun to

ily lived in Gillette, Wyoming, so he didn’t have any hope for true success, until he managed to stumble on Carpet Express Direct. The website, carpetexpressdirect.com, boasted the “closest thing to wholesale in northeast Wyoming,” and advertised prices that definitely looked affordable. He looked at a number of differing shag carpets before thinking to himself that perhaps another La Brea Car-pet wasn’t the thing to buy. He was disheartened because he assumed there weren’t other options at Carpet Express, but after clicking around for a minute realized they sold all flooring options; from wood, to tile, to liquid vinyl plank, cement, and even rubberized flooring. Surely cement wouldn’t do, but some of the linoleum options looked downright dandy, and the patterns he saw online matched the basement wallpaper. So, when Mrs. Halvorson came tramping up the stairs with a vacuum that smelled of burning rubber, muttering furiously, Mr. Halvorson had her number: “Honey, I think I’ve got a fix for the basement,” he said before she could address him.

“Does it involve burning the house down? Because I think that’s the only way to get those stains out!” “No, but I was thinking: why not just re-floor everything?” “Because it’ll cost ten billion dollars and we’d have to do it ourselves!” “Not quite, honey—look here. Carpet Express Direct of Gillette offers consultation and installation, and they sell at the closest prices to wholesale in this part of the state! I was thinking: hey, why not just get rid of the carpet down there? The boys like to play, and they’re going to make messes anyway. Check out the deals! I was looking at linoleum, but the LVP nutmeg’s only $1.99 a square foot, and it looks like real wood!” “Let me see...” and Mrs. Halvorson cast a critical eye on the site. A moment later her features softened, and she said: “Want to take an afternoon off and see what they’ve got in the store?”

You can install a sturdy bar toward the back of the closet and hang the bags by their handles, hooked onto the shower curtain rings.” -- T.I. in Michigan * Too much paper? Here is an idea to decrease what you store: First, look up the instruction manual for any items you purchase, and save them to a file on your computer rather than keeping the paper manual. Then scan your receipts and save them with the manuals. If you don’t have a scanner, take a good-quality digital photo of the receipt, and make sure that the numbers are readable. * “Did you know that pets get lost more often in winter and inclement weather? The precipitation can wash away or mask scent markers that help dogs and cats determine their location. Be sure that your animals are microchipped and that your information is up to date. If you find a lost pet, take it to the nearest vet to have it scanned for the owner’s info. Let’s keep our pets safe!” -- S.M. in Connecticut * Reusable totes are everywhere nowadays. Here are a few uses beyond carrying your groceries: Keep project pieces in one so that all your materials are stored together; plant a starter garden if the material can biodegrade or be hung up; organize small toys or dolls in a child’s room; as an overnight bag. * Cut a hole into the backing of your nightstand, and you can place a power strip in the drawer. The cord goes right out the back of the nightstand and all the cords are out of sight. This also works in an end table with a drawer for your living room or entryway.

* “For sticky scissors, simply reach for the castor oil! Rub a little on the scissors, and they’ll loosen up in no time. This is great for kitchen scissors that are cleaned often, because castor oil is safe and can be ingested. My scissors go through the dishwasher all the time, and the castor oil keeps them from —23— rusting.” -- M.W. in Oregon

Why Does The World Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick was born in Britain circa AD 387. Many are surprised to learn he was not Irish. In fact, St. Patrick first spent time in Ireland when he was captured by Irish pagans as a teen and taken to their country as a slave. After six years working as a shepherd, Patrick became familiar with the customs and spirit of the Irish and “found God.” He was able to eventually escape his imprisonment, vowing to one day return to Ireland as a free man. Patrick was schooled at monasteries and was ordained a priest and later became a bishop. Under Pope Celestine I, he was commissioned (Continued On Pg. 36)

Although St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a festivity filled with clovers, frosty mugs of beer, green clothing, and lively music, the day was once a religious feast day honoring the man many credit with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

March 17 is a special day for people of Irish heritage and other celebrants across the globe. Each year, millions of people pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, with parades, parties and religious services. Celebrations occur even though many celebrants may know little about this legendary saint.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Why Does The World Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?

St. Patrick spent many years evangelizing in the northern half of Ireland and converted thousands of people from paganism to Christianity. According to legend, St. Patrick used the three-leaf clover to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Patrick’s efforts to drive out the pagans became an allegory in which he drove “snakes” out of Ireland. Although green has become the primary color of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and green remains widely associated with Ireland, during the 18th century, the Order of St. Patrick, an Anglo-Irish chivalric order, adopted blue as it’s official color. That led to blue being associated with St. Patrick. However, “wearing of the green” eventually fell back into favor, and the color green and an association with St. Patrick’s Day grew during the 19th and 20th centuries. Although St. Patrick’s Day originated as a religious celebration in honor of a man who brought Christianity to Ireland, it has since become a larger representation of Irish pride and culture.

Home Improvements Eligible For Tax Breaks Or Rebates

Homeowners often look to make improvements to their homes to improve aesthetics, save money or make their homes more energy efficient. What they may not know is that certain home improvements may qualify them for manufacturer or energy supplier rebates and even federal tax credits that can help a person save even more.

Not all products are eligible each year, so it’s beneficial to know what tax incentives are out there regarding home retrofits. Here are some programs to keep in mind.

In Canada, the ecoEnergy Retrofit -- Homes program has been extended until March 31, 2012. Owners of most homes, including four-season recreational properties and low-rise multi-unit residential buildings of three stories or less with at least 50 percent residential space, might be eligible, according to Natural Resources Canada. Applicants can receive a federal grant for up to $5,000. Owners of multiple dwellings can receive up to $1,000,000. Eligible improvements include heating and cooling systems, ventilation systems, hot water equipment, insulation, air sealing, windows/doors/ skylights, and water conservation products. U.S. residents who made home improvements in 2011 may be eligible for tax credits when filing a 2011 tax return. Installation and replacement of biomass stoves, HVAC systems, insulation, metal and asphalt roofs, nonsolar water heaters and windows/doors can earn a person up to 10 percent of the cost, up to $500, or a specific amount from $50 to $300. Improvements must have been done to an existing home and principal

residence by December 31, 2011. Federal tax credits for 2012 include geothermal heat pumps. These are similar to ordinary heat pumps, but use the ground instead of outside air to provide heating, air conditioning and, in most cases, hot water. Use of small residential wind turbines and solar energy systems, including solar water heaters and photovoltaic panels, are also eligible. These tax credits offer 30 percent of the cost of the renovation with no upper limit. Visit http://Energy.gov/savings to determine any additional rebate and savings programs that may be offered in your state. Canadian residents can log onto http:// oee.nrcan.gc.ca/corporate/1513 to find out about other grants and incentives in their province or territory. Homeowners looking to do improvements can go online or consult with a tax professional to determine which improvements may be eligible for tax credits or incentives. With the energy saved and the credit, it could add up to considerable savings on the new product.

King James Version (KJV)

For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.
