Well, it’s officially here now. Spring!
The lambs and calves are arriving on schedule, new buds and green growth are making their move right on time as well. It’s always amazed me that the trees show such great judgement (most years) in holding back their new buds until it’s actually safe to green up. Then there are the springs that fool the trees and other flora into showing new growth before the last winter storm. And mercifully, this spring has been nice and wet so far. Cool and wet is nice, especially in the high desert plains where we reside. That’s why those of us who have better memories aren’t getting too excited about winter being over until May is finished. There have been some significant storms the last half of May in years past which makes it a crap shoot whether or not trees will bear fruit each year. Many times a late freeze will kill the blossoms preventing full fertility and fruit bearing. In May of ‘83 we had 20 inches of snow and wind and everything shut down for 3 days while the storm abated and snow plows and snowmobiles ruled town briefly. Those storms can be dangerous - we gained 3 pounds on the chocolate chip cookies we ate while we were snowed in. They never tell you about the real risks of life on the frontier, do they? With new life the order of the day, I’m excited to report my first grandchild arrived at 6:36 this morning weighing 6 lbs, 7 oz. Better yet, she announced her presence with a cry before she had completely arrived! Now THAT’s robust! What’s especially pleasant about this is that last summer, well before Dad passed away in January, I had a dream in which at the same time he left this world a baby arrived - all mixed together as only can be in a dream. It was strange in that it was sad and hopeful - the gamut of emotions - and much more vivid than most dreams. My daughter reminded me of it - as a matter of fact, she found out that she was pregnant by testing herself after being told about my dream. She actually didn’t know she was with child ‘til then. Here’s hoping you and yours enjoy the hope and life of spring and grandchildren during this season of the earth’s renewal from winter and the changing of the generations as time moves forward. May God bless you as richly as he’s blessed my family! Hug, Editor APRIL 2013

Creating ad ok on abudget... esigner lo Interior designers have a knack for pulling together furniture and accessories to create rooms with widespread appeal. But not every homeowner has the resources to hire a professional to help turn their interior from drab to fab. Fortunately, it doesn’t always take a pro to transform a home’s interior. The key to creating a beautiful room is planning. Designers do it and so should you. Measure the dimensions of the room and create a sketch of the area using graph paper or computer software. Be sure to plot any windows or doors on the drawing so that you will be aware of obstacles. Homeowners unsure of what they want should browse through magazines or pictures on the Web for inspiration. Search for key phrases that describe your design style, such as Tuscan, farmhouse, country, colonial, etc. Then read up on the components of these styles that define it. This will help you select items that fit with the style. Once a particular style has been chosen, create a design board just like the professionals. Cut out swatches of fabric, select paint swatches, find magazine pictures that fit with your goal and arrange them on a piece of poster board. See how the
Page 12
items work together. If you are unsure of colors, see which shades were used in the inspiring picture and determine if it will coordinate with your home. When designing, identify or create a focal point in the room and build off of that. This may be a large window, fireplace, or even the entertainment center if it’s a family room. Place furniture around the focal point and then move outward. It’s also important to keep scale in mind. Large walls or tall ceilings will create plenty of wall space. A small print or wall hanging will be lost in such an area. Be sure to choose furnishings and accessories that fit with the scale of the room. In other words, a huge sectional may overpower a small living room. When choosing colors, make sure they are cohesive. Research the color wheel that artists use to help with designing the room. Some colors are complementary or opposites and still work together. Homeowners nervous about color should choose a color from fabric or furniture and use a few different shades of the same color in the room.
www.HouseHunterEtc.com
Select an accent color that can be used on trim or as a spot of color on a pillow or accessory. When plotting wall hangings or other decor, odd numbers often look more pleasing to the eye. Experiment with different sizes of framed artwork or different shaped accessories for visual appeal. For example, a few rectangular shaped items with a circular clock and a conical flower vase can mix it up in the room. This is where looking at magazine layouts can be extremely helpful. Many stores sell items that mimic the look of higher-priced items. When copying a designer room, select pieces that are similar, but not necessarily the same brands. Consider shopping at second-hand stores or antique shops for discounted pieces. With a little new fabric or stain, many items can look like new again. Shopping online also may enable shoppers to find items more readily and see how they look in staged rooms. When designing, it never hurts to think outside of the box. Items that were intended for outside may work well inside as well. Hanging lanterns or plant stands could be put to use in a rustic room. Save some money by making some items yourself. For instance, if you cannot find a particular throw pillow or drapery that fits with your style, go to a fabric store and purchase fabric to make your own. Decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune or look like you pieced odd items together. By following the guidelines of a designer room and selecting lowerpriced items that mimic the shape and scale of similar accessories, it’s possible for any homeowner to create a room for less. ∑

es! m i D f o l u A Fistf Family owned and operated for thirty-one years, Dave Peters and Northwest Cleaning have continuously refined what they do and how they do it. And today, business is good! There have been peaks and valleys, though. Dave came to Wyoming through the charity of a friend who offered to put him and an associate up until they could find work. Eventually Dave got on with a construction crew, but would leave Gillette to learn the carpet cleaning business in Minnesota. Northwest Cleaning began with a determined man and twenty dollars in dimes. After Dave learned his craft working across Minnesota, he came back to Gillette, only to find his old job had taken on new help, and there was no longer a place for him. “I got on my knees and I prayed,” says Dave. “I went to the phone book, started at ‘A’, and by the third call I already had twelve jobs. That’s how I got started!” The vacuum-repair aspect came later, as it became apparent, that using vacuums to clean carpets, they required regular maintenance. But Dave already had some mechanical experience from his youth: “We were dairy farmers, so we knew how to tear stuff down, fix it, and put it back together.” When asked what has made Northwest Cleaning a success, Dave replied: “I would still

have to give all the credit to God. I mean, we still struggle, day by day, but…it always comes to the cross. We always seem to make it somehow…I got a cap on my computer stand, it says: ‘Jesus is my Boss’. My customers [aren’t] just customers, they’re brothers and sisters.” Northwest Cleaning is also one of the few businesses that will service both vacuums and carpets. The prevailing wisdom among vacuum sellers says this is counter intuitive, but it has worked well for Dave. Over the years he’s learned which vacuums are most popular, and he’ll stock components and accessories you just can’t find anywhere else. “I’ve got more people who go to Walmart and can’t find what they’re looking for… so they tell folks to come here! Parts—we carry stuff they can’t. Whatever’s popular, we try and keep it here. Even though we can’t make much money on it. Some of the best, most popular vacuums don’t have any service plan whatsoever, other than…UPS shipping it to Australia or wherever.…we’re unique there! We service it in America.” When asked his plans for Northwest Cleaning in the future, Dave responded: “…we work six days a week, pretty much, and take turns. Me, my son John and my wife. So we don’t get the vacations everybody else does and things like that…I was always hoping to find another family
like us that would team up with us…so we’d have a little more time off! ...kinda like marriage, you know? But I’ve got 13 grandkids now. Just a matter of time!” That’s Northwest Cleaning—family owned and operated since 1982, and a part of the community that’s here to serve you. For the most experienced, honest, amiable service in the carpet cleaning/vacuum sale and repair industry, Northwest Cleaning is hard to beat! ∑

Getting Started on Spring Cleaning For homeowners, spring cleaning is one of the annual rites of spring. The return of warmer weather presents the perfect opportunity for homeowners to open the windows, let some fresh air in and tidy up after a few months spent cooped up inside while the weather outside was frightful. But now that spring has arrived, the time to clean up around the house has come. Homeowners about to start on their annual spring cleaning should consider the following before beginning: Get The Right Tools The right tools won’t necessarily be a hammer and nails, but cleaning products that can make spring cleaning more efficient. Rubber gloves, cleaning products (preferably natural products that are good for the environment) and enough garbage bags to discard a winter’s worth of clutter should all be on hand before you begin cleaning. If they’re not, you’ll likely need to make a trip to the store while cleaning, which can be time-consuming and prolong the process. Take Some Inventory Many people have no problem buying new clothes, but they do find it hard to get rid of older items. Part of spring cleaning is tossing old items you no longer use, and that includes clothing. Clothing can take up a significant amount of space, so take some inventory on your wardrobe and decide which items you want to keep and which ones you can afford to discard or even donate. Address The Windows If the last several months have been especially cold or snowy, then you might not have looked out the windows in quite some time. Unfortunately, those windows might have accumulated quite the amount of dirt and grime while you were huddled inside. When washing the windows, do so on a cloudy day, as the sun can actually cause streaking. In addition, be mindful of what you’re Page 18
using to wipe down the windows postcleaning. Microfiber rags typically give windows a great shine without any streaking. The blinds and drapes will also need to be addressed, as they have likely accumulated some dust over the last few months. Dust the valance and the frame, and wipe the blinds down with a damp cloth. You can also use your vacuum’s upholstery and brush attachments to further clean blinds and drapes. Tidy Up The Bed You likely wash your bed linens regardless of the season. When spring cleaning, toss these linens into the washing machine and don’t forget to wash the mattress pads and bed skirting as well. While those items are in the wash, flip all the mattresses in your household. Don’t Forget The Kitchen The kitchen is not immune to clutter, and it’s especially easy for items to overstay their welcome in the refrigerator and the kitchen cabinets. Look for old takeout containers in the refrigerator that have managed to stick around, and throw these out as well as any items that have passed their expiration dates. While items in the kitchen cabinets might not have an expiration date, it helps to remove them from the pantry and then dust and wipe down the shelves. When doing so, discard any items that no longer seem appetizing. Beat The Rugs Area rugs have no doubt collected dirt and dust over the last several months. Though vacuuming www.HouseHunterEtc.com
these area rugs might be enough during the year, take advantage of the pleasant weather and take the rugs outside to beat them and rid them of dust and any other particles the vacuum might have missed over the last few months. Empty And Clean The Bookshelves Bookshelves are one the biggest collectors of dust in many homes. Open the windows in the home and then remove books from the shelves. Once the books have been removed, dust the shelves and wipe them down with a damp cloth. And don’t forget to dust the books and reorganize titles before returning them to their newly cleaned shelves. Spring cleaning is something all homeowners must do to keep their homes healthy and clean. Spring cleaning is an annual event at many households, and a few simple strategies can make it go much more smoothly. ∑

“Workin’ on Night Crew” Dust in the pit mingled with an already starless night, creating a cornucopia of black. Cleatus Martinez tossed back a bottle of NoDoze and squinted like a toad toward the truck under the shovel before him, twirling a wispy Fu Manchu with chubby, toady little fingers. A second later he swallowed in a manner that resembled croaking, then gave birth to a froggy belch so foul it fogged the cabin. Which was no help, as it was three in the morning and his vision was already playing tricks on him. He wasn’t sure if it was her or not. He couldn’t read the number on the truck; the wind was gusting so strongly. It’s usually much calmer on a night shift. A storm was coming. A heavy storm, according to the gusty warning. “Maybe we’ll get sent home early,” he yawned at the empty cab. Cleatus could tell the driver under the shovel was sleeping. Whether or not she was the cute college chick whose dad was B-crew’s shift-supervisor remained to be seen. She’d have to be on overtime if she were since the mine never scheduled relatives on the same crew. That had to be the case since Melody Ambrose – daughter of Steve Ambrose, supervisor – was listed right next to truck 346 on the night’s assignment sheet. 346 had a strange bed. Instead of the 250-ton payload being balanced by the shape of the haul truck bed, a pivoting door on the back swept up in an arc when the truck dumped coal. Thus, rather than the exaggerated square-root symbol that generally describes the shape of a haul-truck’s bed, there was an additional rectangular bumper stretching vertically atop the cab. It almost looked like one of those old campers you saw on pickups in the eighties, with the bunk over the front. Only this truck was big as a house, perhaps bigger; the operator cabin looked like a small afterthought - a sort of twenty-foot balcony atop the engine. And its operator was fast asleep, legs on the dashboard, head on her chest, snoring. The shovel under whose bucket the young lady slept was seven stories high, and could fill her 250-ton bed with only six or seven scoops; each of which took slightly less than a minute to deposit. If you were disciplined enough, you actually could catch a decent nap when you pulled under a shovel. You just had to be amenable to an explosive foghorn scrambling your insides when it finished loading—the signal to pull out and drive up the 6 degree upgrade on the back half of the coal route to the hopper. About then something else caught PAGE 20
A Mine with a View Cleatus’ attention: to his right, loping down a coal-wall from high above where even larger machines worked steadily at overburden removal, came an oblivious cottontail rabbit. Cleatus had never seen a rabbit this deep in the pit. They were in the west coal-bottom, which stretched some four hundred feet into rocky earth. The rabbit glanced Cleatus’ way, then hopped steadily until it was under the front left wheel of truck 346—a wheel that could crush a full-size pickup without losing momentum. A gleam came to Cleatus’ eye. He leaned forward and stretched a flabby arm to the horn cable then gave it a pull. The girl in 346 jumped like she’d been pinched and was a second moved to yank the brake and speed off up the six-percent, when the shovel’s bottom flapped out and another 60-odd ton bunch of coal fell into her truck, bouncing its shocks and causing her to dynamite the brakes. She stared around wildly, disoriented. Cleatus Martinez about lost it, he was laughing so hard. The girl punched on her cab-light, rolled down her window and flipped Cleatus off. He grabbed the CB: “Rarin’ to go, ain’tcha 346? Don’t be too fast! Get stuck and you owe us all donuts!” “I see you, Cleatus! Think you’re funny? You won’t ever get any donuts outta me!” It was that new college girl! Cleatus replied: “Been up all day studyin’ for finals?” “365, Martinez: cut the chatter.” “Shovel and talk at the same time, Major!” jabbed Cleatus (“Major” was the nickname of Billy Brown, operator of coal shovel six.) “Says the guy next in line,” the Major honked his horn and Melody paused, squinting at Cleatus to make sure, then pulled the brake and started forward. In that time, be it from sleep deprivation or a generally short attention span, Cleatus had entirely forgotten the little cottontail. He suddenly remembered when the tire rolled forward and he didn’t see any bunny hop out. He was about to accuse Melody of rabbit-cide when, at the last second, that rodent blasted out so quickly it nearly set the coal bed on fire. He’d never seen an animal move so fast! Cleatus clicked the mike: “Whoo-hoo! Major, you see that rabbit!?” “He was bookin’ it, wasn’t he—!” www.HouseHunterEtc.com
by Kevin Bennett
“Fifteen Steve to all trucks in the coal-pit: cut the chatter, guys.” Cleatus rolled his eyes as he wheeled his own behemoth beneath the shovel: “Sorry, Dad.” “Martinez, I ain’t your daddy!” The Major couldn’t resist: “Sure about that fifteen? If I see you two in profile, I can never tell the difference—! Some other smart-Alec chimed in: “Yeah, I always think there’s an eclipse!” “Quiet down, guys! Some of us’re sleeping!” Crackled another comedian. Someone replied: “With a conscience like yours? I don’t see how you ever sleep—” “Dispatch to all operators: joke’s over. Cut. The. Chatter.” “Why so grumpy dispatch Dan?” Dispatch replied: “There’s a thunderhead rolling in. Big one. The only non-college kid in that pit is Cleatus Martinez.” Steve Ambrose, supervisor, whistled low over the radio: “…good point.” … to be Continued next issue Sneak Peek … Fifteen Steve crackled back: “Everybody on the radio, shut up while I talk her through this. Melody: Listen to me very carefully.” “Okay.” “You need to turn the truck around, Melody. Let off the gas, wait till you start to slide, crank it to the right. You should swing left and be facing down the six-percent. Then you’re going to pull your brakes and dump your load while you slide.” “But Dad, Unit-Rigs can’t dump and roll at the same time like the Cat—” “That’s where the mud comes in—” “Why can’t I dump it facing up the sixpercent!?” “Because you’ll topple over backwards! Don’t argue, Melody!”

Tips For Managing & Preventing
For many adults, stress is an everpresent part of life. Though statistics on stress can be easily manipulated, it’s safe to assume many men and women experience significant stress, especially when the economy is struggling, as it has been over the last several years. The prevalence of stress serves to highlight the emphasis men and women must place on reducing it and, whenever possible, preventing it. Though it might prove impossible to eliminate stress, learning to manage that stress can improve your quality of life significantly. When attempting to manage stress, it can help to ask yourself the following questions. What is the cause of my stress? Stress can be caused by a number of things, but for many people, the main cause of their stress is work. In fact, a report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health found that 40 percent of workers found their job was very or extremely stressful. Stress at the workplace has become even more overwhelming in recent years as the economy has sagged and workers who managed to keep their jobs were asked to do more to make up for smaller staffs. If work isn’t stressing you out, then it might help to maintain a stress journal, where you can track stressful incidents in the hopes of identifying just what it might be that’s stressing you out.
Stress
stress improves your overall health and involves something that makes you feel better both emotionally and physically, then you might begin to notice that the stress is no longer so overwhelming. Can I prevent stress? Stress prevention can be difficult, though it’s not impossible. Since so many people cite work as their primary cause of stress, it might be impossible to eliminate stress entirely. But there are ways to prevent unnecessary stress from overtaking your life. • Recognize you have limits. High rates of unemployment have left many working men and women feeling as though they need to keep stretching themselves at work in order to keep their job and stay afloat. But you must learn to say “no” if stress has become overwhelming. Don’t take on added responsibilities if your workload is already excessive. • Avoid the source of stress. When possible, avoid the source of your stress. For example, if you spend ample time each day sitting in a traffic jam,
consider an alternate route to work or even public transportation. • Learn to manage your time more effectively. Many overstressed people find there simply isn’t enough time in the day to get things done. Managing time more effectively, which includes planning ahead and not procrastinating, can help turn a hectic, stressful schedule into one that’s far more manageable. • Make time to relax. Part of stress management and prevention is making time to relax and have fun. Spend time outdoors and don’t skip outings with family and friends. Use your allotted vacation time even if you just stay at home and relax. Taking time out for yourself can help you recharge and put you in a better position to cope with stress when it returns. Living with stress is something with which men and women have grown accustomed. But employing some management and prevention strategies can help you avoid succumbing to stress and can improve your quality of life as well. ∑
How can I manage this stress? Stress levels can worsen depending on how you respond to stressful incidents. For many people, effective stress management revolves around finding healthier ways to cope. Unfortunately, it’s common to respond to stress in a host of negative ways. Overconsumption of alcohol, smoking, over- or under eating, withdrawing from friends and family, and sleeping too much are common, yet very unhealthy, ways to respond to stress. Managing and coping with stress involves finding solutions that benefit your emotional and physical health. Drinking too much or avoiding family and friends certainly won’t accomplish either of those things, so find healthier responses, which can include a better diet, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, and exercising more. If your solution to PAGE 28

Support the Senior Send-Off! Another generation of students will soon launch themselves into the real world. Many parents remember this time with fondness and alarm. Fondness for those nostalgic memories of carefree youth; alarm because their teenagers are now in the same place, and most parents know exactly how they acted at that age. CCHS has a solution: the Senior Send-Off. After prom, every senior that made the dance will want to hang out with their classmates. What better way to facilitate such a thing than the Senior Send-Off,? With endless games and prizes—like black jack, poker, and a new car—there’s ample motivation for teens to keep out of trouble and enjoy themselves all night in a clean, safe, controlled environment among friends and peers. The more seniors we can get to the Senior Send-Off, the fewer unsafe parties and ridiculous illegal shenanigans there will be, with your help of course, this could be the most memorable for years!

Local Real Estate Market Synopsis Residential Real Estate Market Drops Slightly as Commercial Properties Average Up by Josh McGrath Residential properties showed a decline in sales volume based on first quarter figures for 2013. The 4th quarter had a fair bit of uncertainty between the election process and the fiscal cliff. This then affected the 1st quarter sales. The average sale price of a residential property was off 3.0% from last years 1st quarter, according to this years 1st quarter figures. Not only were prices down, so were new listings. The good news is that although homes are selling for slightly less on average they are selling about 17 days faster. The sample of commercial properties closed for the first quarter of 2013 was a little too small to infer a great deal from 2012,

SIMPLE
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Answers on page 40 PAGE 34

Earth Day Special
Reuse & Re-Purpose Chewing gum as an art medium? Beer as a hair serum? Surprisingly, these items and many more are reused every day, playing a host of roles they were never intended for. Before items are relegated to the trash, individuals can think about ways these same items can be reused and reincarnated into several other purposes. Today’s younger generations have grown up in a time when disposable items are de rigueur. But long before disposable items became the norm, men, women and children were forced to make due with items that were long past their expiration dates, even reusing them in new ways. While this practice might have been replaced by the convenience of disposable items, eco-conscious citizens can still embrace this old and environmentally friendly trend. •Find Out if it Can be Fixed An appliance on the fritz or a toy that has lost a part might not need to be discarded. Before finding the trash can, find out if the item can be fixed. It may take a short inquiry to the company or the work of a handyman to repair a broken item and set it right again, but such efforts are worth it. •Polish Pots With thorough cooking and oxidation, copper pots and even steel ones can begin to look dingy. Regular, old beer can be used as a polishing agent to get them to sparkle. Because of beer’s subtle acidity, it can help boost shine without staining the metal like a higher-acidity liquid would.

•Embrace Newspapers’ Versatility There are millions of newspapers printed and used worldwide. The average household may have one or more newspapers delivered each week, and newsprint is also used for junk mail and advertisements. While recycling does help cut down on newspapers, there are other ways to put old papers to good use. Line the bottom of refrigerator drawers with the paper to catch spills and eliminate odors. Use shredded paper as kitty litter or in bird cages. Wrap unripe fruit in newsprint to help it ripen faster. You can also place newspaper at the bottom of a planting bed before you cover it with soil or mulch to keep away weeds. •Give Old Jeans a New Life It’s hard to part with that favorite pair of jeans sometimes. Whether they’re stained or simply don’t fit anymore, you can turn the denim into something new. Doll clothes are easily crafted from scraps of denim. Or, why not turn pieces of denim into a durable, reusable shopping bag to take to stores? A patchwork quilt made of squares of denim can be used as a picnic blanket or beach throw in a pinch. Jeans can also be donated so the less fortunate can benefit from the clothing. •Swap and Share Before buying anything, find out if others might lend you things that you need. You may not need a specialized power tool for more than a day or so, and borrowing items can www.HouseHunterEtc.com
allow you to do a test drive of sorts before you actually make a purchase. There are social networking sites that enable people to connect with others to share and swap things they have. One may have a bounty of backyard produce to share while another may have a collection of paperback books ready to be read. Clothing, baby items, toys, and the like can easily be shared or given away. One of the more popular neighborhood activities these days is to host a clothing swap party, where participants bring a set number of clothing items they no longer use (that are in good condition) and everyone swaps things to refresh their wardrobes at no cost. •Recycle Items to Protect Gadgets Turn a child’s empty juice box into a case for your smartphone. Knit or sew a cover for your new tablet or e-reader with scraps of fabric or yarn. Remember those worn jeans from before? Make a pouch to store your GPS device so it can be moved from car to car. When individuals think about the items they have around the house and how they can be re-purposed, there is less likelihood those spent items will end up in the garbage. ∑ PAGE 35

UNITED ST AT E S O F T H E RO C K IES
It’s 2013 and the Federal Government has taken a nosedive. It seems United States politicians have made it their mission to overturn traditional American values, replacing them with socialist propaganda of some stripe, or nationwide dependency maintained by an ever-increasing deficit. We owe other countries money, and We Can’t Pay Up! Well, I’m flabbergasted and fed up. Why should over-paid, under-patriotic career politicians on the East and West coast subordinate the rest of the country? Because those are the population centers of the United States? Not good enough. Wyoming produces 40% of coal nationwide, and we’ve got 68 billion short tons in reserve. We provide 25% of the world’s yearly trona product, we’re the second largest producer of Natural Gas in the nation, and we’ve got diamond and Uranium products—plus scattered statewide, agriculture. However: Wyoming’s not the only state that throbs like a ventricle in the heart of America. Look at Montana: a million people, wide-open spaces, and 2.5 million head of cattle. Agriculture’s a bigger deal in Montana, but they’ve got oil, too; with a crude deposit of roughly 3.7 billion barrels. As of 2010, Montana had over 25% of the estimated recoverable reserve base coal in the nation, and supplies 3.8% of our nation’s coal, distributing to 13 states. Go a little east and you’ve got North Dakota, the fourth largest crude oil producing state in the nation with more than 7% of total U.S. crude oil production. They’ve also got almost 7% of national recoverable coal reserves. North Dakota coal production accounts for 2.7% of the national total; and 90% of the state’s area is farmland. Now go to South Dakota, who, in 2011, came fifth in national ethanol production. They have about 830,000 people, farmland, a high Christian population, and Mount Rushmore. Then, travel west and you’ve got Idaho. Most folks think: Potatoes and Guns. Well... they do produce a third of the nation’s potatoes; and about 22% of the state is Mormon, so they’ve probably got a good chunk of the nation’s guns, too. PAGE 36
But they’ve also got 1.5 million people, a bunch of lumber, and a number of technology corporations who produce microchips and the like, making them nationally valuable. Now in the United States are about 320 million people, give or take. If there are a million in Montana, 1.5 million in Idaho, under 600,000 in Wyoming, under 700,000 in North Dakota, and under 900,000 in South Dakota, that’s around 4.5 million—or, approximately 1.4% of the total population. Of that 1.4%, over 70% are conservative, Christian, or some combination of the two. So, a little over one percent of the national population, primarily conservative, account for more than half the nation’s energy reserves and resources, as well as a good chunk of other economic factors like tourism, transit, agriculture and history. Here’s my proposal: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho: Let’s band together. We are, and have been for many decades, the Heart of the United States. But the United States despises her Heart, and has been trying to poison it socio-politically since at least the sixties. So, we close our borders and cut off all commerce with the rest of the country. We post the reserve guard and maintain our internal economy from our own resources. Just these five states could exist independent of the U.S. for decades, with their agriculture, oil, and coal. But such prolonged independence is not my suggestion. My suggestion is three months—ninety days—at the end of which we “surrender”, but as a federated territory with its own constitution. Then we apply for foreign aide from the U.S. government, like the vassal territories already associated with America (Puerto Rico, Guam, the Philippines, the Virgin Islands, etc.). No more federal taxes, no more Washington passing moral and economic legislation that contradict our core beliefs, and no choice on Washington’s part but to give in, as we are their energy conduit—their literal “heart”. You can’t run a body without a heart, no matter what the D.C. “brain” “thinks”. So, what are we waiting for?! ∑ www.HouseHunterEtc.com
UNDERSTANDING WOMEN WOMAN’S PERFECT BREAKFAST She’s sitting at the table with her gourmet coffee. Her son is on the cover of the Wheaties box. Her daughter is on the cover of Business Week. Her boyfriend is on the cover of Playgirl. And her husband is on the back of the milk carton. WOMEN’S REVENGE ‘Cash, check or charge?’ I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase. As she fumbled for her wallet, I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse. ‘So, do you always carry your TV remote?’ I asked. ‘No,’ she replied, ‘but my husband refused to come shopping with me, and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally.’ UNDERSTANDING WOMEN (A Man’s Perspective) I know I’m not going to understand women. I’ll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax, pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root, and still be afraid of a spider. MARRIAGE SEMINAR While attending a Marriage Seminar dealing with communication, Tom and his wife Grace listened to the instructor, ‘It is essential that husbands and wives know each other’s likes and dislikes.’ He addressed the man, ‘Can you name your wife’s favorite flower?’ Tom leaned over, touched his wife’s arm gently and whispered, ‘It’s Pillsbury, isn’t it?’ CIGARETTES AND TAMPONS A man walks into a pharmacy and wanders up & down the aisles. The sales girl notices him and asks him if she can help him. He answers that he is looking for a box of tampons for his wife. She directs him down the correct aisle. A few minutes later, he deposits a huge bag of cotton balls and a ball of string on the counter. She says, confused, ‘Sir, I thought you were looking for some tampons for your wife?’ He answers, ‘You see, it’s like this, yesterday, I sent my wife to the store to get me a carton of cigarettes, and she came back with a tin of tobacco and some rolling papers; cause it’s sooo-ooo--oo- ooo much cheaper. So, I figure if I have to roll my own ......... so does she.’ (Figure this guy is the one on the milk carton!) WIFE VS. HUSBAND A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, ‘Relatives of yours?’ ‘Yep,’ the wife replied, ‘in-laws.’

These factors have made it challenging for many people to keep healthcare costs manageable. Yet, there are ways to keep healthcare expenses affordable. Compare plans. If neither is sufficient, decide if purchasing your own insurance with a union affiliation or through a different method would be better. Live a healthier lifestyle. A sick individual will have to pay more for healthcare. Eat the right foods and maintain a healthy weight. Do not smoke or drink alcohol to excess. Be sure to include exercise in your daily activities. Check for discounts. Some health plans offer rebates to policy holders who exercise regularly. Some insurance providers will offer incentives, such as a points program, for taking surveys or taking part in healthrelated activities. Use in-network providers. If you participate in a plan that requires you use network doctors, do so. Otherwise you will have to pay the balance of costs not covered by the insurance company. Follow the rules of your plan. Ask for generic prescriptions. You can save by going to certain pharmacies within your plan and also by using generic prescriptions when available. Visit doctors regularly. Staying healthy and being informed of ailments early on can prevent lengthy hospital stays or more in-depth testing and treatments. Do forget to schedule routine dental visits, physicals and screenings. ∑
The cost of living is on the rise. Gas, groceries and even healthcare continue to become more expensive. Healthcare, in particular, has become a burden to many people. The rising costs of routine check ups, basic medical care and prescriptions is making it difficult for many people to afford adequate healthcare. It’s hard not to be impacted by the cost of healthcare, which is on the rise for a variety of reasons: • reduced contributions from employers into employee healthcare plans; • increased incidences of medical malpractice suits, which drive up doctors’ insurance costs; • greater involvement by patients in their healthcare choices, with more requests for in-depth testing; • increased innovations in technology.

Fact:

Weird 307 Laws
Many people know that stress can be bad for your mental health, but as it turns out, it can also be bad for your physical health. Researchers have linked behaviors associated with stress, such as drinking alcohol, using drugs, or even binging on comfort foods, with the deterioration of the adrenal gland. The adrenal gland releases stress hormones that signal to the body whether to fight or get out of the situation (flight). If mollifying substances are introduced into the body, it negatively affects the delicate way the stress system works, and the adrenal gland eventually putters out. That means the body can be in a constant level of stress, or a person can feel stressed even over minor things. This also impacts the heart, liver, blood pressure, and a number of other factors. Keeping stress in check is important, but it shouldn’t be done in a way that does more harm than good. ∑ APRIL 2013

There’s also the Build-To-Suit exchange, which allows the taxpayer to use “profit” from deferred taxes in the exchange as capital for property improvements. There is the Reverse Exchange, where you get the new property before you transfer the old one; and finally there’s the Personal Property Exchange, which is not limited to “Real” property. So, how does one become eligible for a 1031 Exchange? Well, your “relinquished” and “replacement” properties must be vetted as “productive” in trade, or some kind of capital for an investment. You can’t do the exchange and immediately re-sell it. Also, the property you acquire must be “like kind” to the one you’re relinquishing. But in general, so long as the property is not specifically excluded, it can qualify for the tax-deferment of the exchange. With the seeds of socialism surreptitiously sewing themselves into our serial lives, it won’t be long until Uncle Sam realizes he’s allowed the IRS to act less like reptiles and more like people, and gets rid of the 1031 Exchange. But maybe not. Who can tell? What is sure is, that this is a great way to legitimately dodge unnecessary taxes, so I say get in while the getting’s good! ∑
