DID YOU KNOW

?

Researching family history and genealogy can be an interesting project the entire family can enjoy. Thanks to the Internet and the various family history sites that have cropped up in recent years, it is now easier than ever for families to investigate their origins. Family genealogy projects may start as school assignments and grow into much more once the seed of curiosity has been planted. Web sites such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.com can assist individuals with following up on family journals or word-ofmouth stories passed on through generations. Tracing one particular branch of the family may be more manageable at the outset. Once that desire for information is sated, you can move on to different family members or even a spouse’s family history.

MOTHER’S DAY & GRADUATION

How about a free gift that takes minimal effort and can mean the world to exhausted mothers everywhere? What is this gift you ask? The dishes. Do them! Sweep. Wash her car. Vaccum. ANYTHING. These gestures signfy more than you would think to many of us ladies, and a day free of cleaning is a GREAT gift to any exhausted mommy. (Seriously.) Any mom could use some down time. Giving her a spa set, including a new towel, bath salts, and some bubble bath, is a great way to let her know you think she deserves to be pampered. You could even go the extra mile and include a gift card for a manipedi at your local nail salon - many salons even run Mother’s Day related discounts. If you have small children, don’t forget to include a home made coupon promising to leave her in peace while she’s taking her luxury bath.

Swiss Cake DiplomasJust wrap a piece of ribbon around a cake roll and you’re done. We thought those white chocolate rolls would look great like this too. What a cute and easy grad party treat! Not to mention quick, cheap and easy.

The votes are in, and we are voting live flowers! Bouquets are lovely, but you could buy a potted orchid like this for less, plus, if cared for properly, it will last a longer. A potted plant and a heart felt card are a wonderful way to show mom you care.

1. Start with any flavor cupcake you like. 2. Frost it with your favorite colors- you could pick the same ones of your graduate’s school. 3. Add a mini peanut butter cup, sticking it on upside down. 4. Using chocolate as glue, add a chocolate square to the peanut butter cup. 5. On the top, we used a mini M&M and some gold ribbon for our tassel. You could really get creative with these. SO cute! ConGRADuations class of 2014!

THE BASICS OF CLEANING WINDOWS

A

fter a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can EORFN WKDW VXQVKLQH IURP ÀQGLQJ LWV ZD\ LQWR a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably. * Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows. 9DFXXP ZLQGRZVLOOV DQG WUDFNV ÀUVW WR remove a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them. * Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle. * Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective. * Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors. * A mild dishwashing liquid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar. * Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hardto-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

Daily Joke

A man was in his front yard mowing grass when his beautiful, blond, female neighbor came out of the house and went straight to the mailbox. She opened it, looked inside, slammed it shut, and stormed back into her house. A little later she came out of her house again, went to the mailbox, again opened it, and slammed it shut again. Angrily, back into the house she went. As the man was getting ready to edge the lawn, here she came again. She marched to the mailbox, opened it and then slammed it closed harder than ever. Puzzled by her actions, the man asked her, “Is something wrong? To which she replied, “There certainly is! My stupid computer keeps telling me I’ve got mail!”

CREATING YOUR HOUSEHOLD BUDGET

S

tretching every dollar is a reality for many families. A higher cost-of-living coupled with financial uncertainty has inspired many families to scale back their spending, a process that’s much easier when families create a household budget. Creating a household budget is often more complicated for families than it is for individuals. That’s because families not only tend to have more monthly expenses, but also because families tend to pay more mind to their financial futures than men and women living on their own. The following are a few tips for men and women hoping to create a household budget for their families. GET A GRIP ON YOUR FINANCES Before setting a family budget, heads of the household should first get a firm grasp of their finances. Determine household income, fixed monthly expenses (i.e., mortgage, car payments, etc.), luxury expenses (i.e., cable television service, dining out, etc. ), and outstanding consumer debt. Once you get a clear picture of what’s coming in and what’s going out, you can determine where you’re making sound decisions and where you’re not. SET A GOAL Once finances have been examined, you can then set a goal. Goals will change as your financial situation changes, but let your existing financial situation influence the goal you initially set. For example, if an examination of your financial situation revealed a considerable amount of consumer debt, then a goal of eradicating that debt is a great place to start, and part of setting the goal is developing a course of action to make it a reality. When trying to free up money to pay down consumer debt, examine the expenses you listed as luxuries and determine which ones you can cut so you can pay down your family’s debts. Dining out less and cutting back on entertainment expenses are great ways to free up money to pay down debt. If an examination of your finances indicates little or no consumer debt but lots of money being spent frivolously, allocate funds for daily expenditures like a morning cup of coffee or lunch into your budget and do your best to avoid exceeding that amount. ESTABLISH A WEEKLY BUDGET Many families find it easier to manage their money and stay within their budgets

if they live on weekly, as opposed to monthly, budgets. This can be tricky, as many of your more significant expenses, including mortgage and car payments, are likely collected on a monthly basis. But establishing a weekly budget for your family allows you to monitor your

TIPS FOR DINING OUT ON MOTHER’S DAY

other’s Day is right around the corner, and this special holiday serves to honor all those women who devote so much time and effort to their families. While gifts and other trinkets are certainly part of the celebration, a vast majority of children opt to treat Mom to a night out on the town come Mother’s Day. Not only does this give mom a night off from cooking, but also it presents an opportunity to get dressed up and spend time together as a family. A vast number of families travel to their favorite restaurants for Mother’s Day meals. Mother’s Day is one of the busiest holidays of the year for restaurants. The National Retail Federation says 54.8 percent of Americans treat their mothers to a special meal out on Mother’s Day. Billions of dollars are generated by people eating out with their mothers. With large crowds to be expected, diners can follow a few tips when treating Mom to a meal. BOOK EARLY ... VERY EARLY To guarantee a reservation at any restaurant, namely your favorite restaurant, you will need to make a reservation well in advance of Mother’s Day. It’s never too early to put your name on the reservation list. Don’t forget Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 11, 2014. EXPECT TO WAIT Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave.

HouseHunterWY.com

Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained. CONSIDER DINING OUT A DAY BEFORE OR AFTER Restaurants are generally packed on Mother’s Day, and as a result kitchen and wait staffs

May

might be overtaxed. What’s more, diners might be relegated to a special or abbreviated menu. If you want a more relaxed setting and the ability to order whatever you desire, it may be a better idea to celebrate Mother’s Day in advance. Then have Mom enjoy a relaxing day at home on her special day. TAKE-OUT IS AN OPTION Families can treat Mom to a dinner out, without really having to go out. Many restaurants offer takeout service, so you will not be limited to pizza or Chinese. Even chain restaurants have curbside service, so if Mom is in the mood for a burger or something more elaborate, she’ll have that option. EXPECT AN INCLUDED GRATUITY Restaurants often include a gratuity in the bill when servicing larger parties, such as those that might be celebrating Mother’s Day. The standard gratuity rate is 18 percent, but you may want to go above and beyond if you feel the service is exemplary. HIRE A SITTER FOR YOUNG KIDS Although Mother’s Day is a chance for the entire family to spend time together, the main goal is to ensure Mom’s comfort and happiness. If very young children are in tow, she may not be able to relax and enjoy her meal. Infants will need to be fed, and toddlers may be easily distracted. Have a sitter watch little ones when adults are dining out, and then Mom can enjoy time with the kids when she returns home for more celebrating.

HOW TO GUARANTEE YOUR GARDEN STARTS OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

s winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. CLEAR DEBRIS One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. EXAMINE THE SOIL Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. INITIATE EDGING Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once

the season hits full swing. FIGHT WEEDS Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and

potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins.

Did You Know?

The symptoms women feel when suffering a heart attack are often different than those exhibited by men. According to Jeanette Yuen, M.D., a cardiologist at New York’s White Plains Hospital, women’s heart attack symptoms can be so mild that women may mistakenly believe they are suffering from a more innocuous medical issue, such as acid reflux or even the flu. But symptoms such as nausea, cold sweats and radiating pain in the stomach are recognized by the American Heart Association as possible indicators of a heart attack in women, and these signs should not be written off as signs of a cold or stomach ailment, as women are at risk of heart disease and heart attack despite the misconception that such ailments are exclusive to men. Women at risk for heart disease and heart attack include those with a family history of heart disease; female smokers; female diabetics; women with high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure; and women who are post-menopausal, physically inactive or overweight. Women, particularly those over 50, who begin to feel physical discomfort in their chest or any of the aforementioned symptoms should consult their physicians immediately.

THE HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY

T

hough many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country. The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women’s groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, S.C., where teachers, missionaries and some members of the press gathered on May 1, 1865 to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity. Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves. When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course. While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in

May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers. In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.

PET SENSITIVITIES DEMYSTIFIED:

P

Tackle the irritations affecting your animal

et sensitivities are on the rise, yet many pet owners may be unaware of what is specifically impacting their four-legged family members. With a host of potential allergens and other irritants possibly affecting your pet, it is crucial to understand the source so you can mitigate the negative effect it may be having on your animal’s health and overall well-being. Here are three common sources of sensitivities that may be affecting your cat or dog, along with suggested remedies to help your pet lead a healthier (and happier) life. OUTDOOR POLLUTANTS The great outdoors is often a major source of allergens and irritants, which can be linked to sensitivities. Just like humans, pets can be impacted by seasonal, plant-based allergies. Pollens and grasses are common sources during the warm spring and summer months. Be aware of your animal’s usual habits and take note if a reaction may be correlated with a particular season. If you are concerned, you might consider a trip to the vet to help determine your best course of action.

FOOD Food can also cause sensitivities. Michele Dixon, a specialist in pet health and nutrition at pet food company Petcurean, agrees. “Food sensitivities are increasingly prevalent in pets such as cats and dogs,” she says. “If you suspect your pet may be suffering from a food-related intolerance, try replacing their food with one that is geared towards their specific dietary needs. INDOOR ALLERGENS Perhaps less of a perceived threat, indoor allergens such as dust mites and mold spores can also take their toll. Cleaning your floors and carpets regularly to minimize the dust that has accumulated is one method for decreasing the risk of these issues. By closely monitoring your pet’s exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens, and keeping an eye on how they react to the food they eat, you can help ensure your pet thrives. Additional information is available at www.petcurean.com.

Terms to Know Before Going to the Rodeo

T

he growing popularity of rodeo, which, according to the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, attracts 30 million fans each year, has piqued the curiosity of many people who have never before attended a rodeo or watched an event on television. Upon discovering the rodeo, men, women and children often find it as compelling if not more compelling than most popular mainstream sports. For those interested in rodeo but uncertain about its terminology, the following are a few terms to know, courtesy of the PRCA. Barrelman: An entertainer who uses a barrel to distract a bull after a ride. Such distractions sometimes protect the cowboy. Breaking the barrier: This occurs during a timed event when a rider leaves the box too soon, failing to give the bull a sufficient head start. Riders who break the barrier are assessed a 10-second penalty. Bullfighter: An athlete who protects the bull rider after he dismounts or is bucked off. A bullfighter can distract the bull by directing its attention to the exit gate or even stepping between the bull and the bull rider. Chute: a pen that holds an animal safely in position. Covering: this occurs during roughstock events when a rider stays on at least the minimum time of eight seconds.

Draw: Conducted three days before each PRCA rodeo, the draw is random and assigns each roughstock competitor a specific bucking horse or bull. Time-event contestants are assigned a calf or steer in a random on-site draw shortly before each

rodeo begins. Flags: used in rodeo’s timed events so judges can signal the timers to stop the clocks. Judges in the arena will drop the flags. Flankman: a cowboy or cowgirl who works in the bucking chutes, adjusting the flant strap around the animal before the ride. Go-round: each round of competition in a rodeo. Hazer: the cowboy who rides on the right side of the steer from the contestant to make sure the steer runs straight. Hooey: the knot a cowboy uses to finish tying the calf’s legs together in tie-down roping. Piggin’ string: the small rope used to tie a calf’s legs together in tie-down roping. Rank: an adjective of praise and respect used to describe especially challenging roughstock. Riggin’: a suitcase-style handhold customized to a rider’s grip and attached to a molded piece of leather that is cinched, with a pad, around the horse’s girth. Roughstock: the bucking horses and bulls used in bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, usually bred and raised for the job. Stock contractors: the companies that bring livestock to the arena for rodeos. Triple Crown Winner: a cowboy who wins three world championships in the same year. See you at the Rodeo this year!

LEARN THE PROPER WAY TO WEAR A GRADUATION MORTARBOARD

raduation season is upon us, and that means students from all over the country are preparing for the next chapter in their lives. But before they further their educations or enter the job market, they must first participate in a long-running tradition: the graduation ceremony. At this event full of pomp and circumstance, graduates will be required to wear some sort of unifying, formal dress to set themselves apart from others. Many schools use the traditional cap and gown for graduations. This consists of a robed gown and tassel-topped mortarboard that usually coordinate with the official school colors. Graduates also may wear other accoutrements depending on the level of their degrees. This tradition dates back to medieval Europe when students wore special uniforms each day to denote they were scholars. But today’s students dress up in academic regalia only during commencement proceedings or other graduation-related events. Of the various components of graduation dress, the one that may give graduates the most difficulty is the mortarboard. The square academic cap is referred to as a “mortarboard” because of its similarity

in appearance to the hawk or hod tool used by masons to hold mortar. It can be a cumbersome piece that may slip off if not worn correctly or if it is sized incorrectly. The cap of the mortarboard should fit snugly on the head. It should not rest on the top of the head, but fit well enough to cover at least the top one-third of the head. If the cap seems loose, graduates may want to use a few bobby pins to keep it in place. The mortarboard should be positioned so that its point faces the middle of the forehead. When viewed from above, it should create a diamond shape, not a square. Also, the mortarboard should be horizontal (parallel) to the floor. Imagine it to be a flat surface on which a cup or book can be placed. If the mortarboard is tilted upward, it is worn incorrectly. Some graduates position the mortarboard poorly to accommodate hairstyles. However, it should be flat and secure on top of the head. A tassel is the final component of the mortarboard. It is affixed to the top of the cap by a loop around a button. The tassel indicates the level of academic achievement. Graduates who will be receiving a high school diploma or an undergraduate degree from a college or university will wear the tassel so that it hangs over the front-right

side of the mortarboard. Once the diplomas are received, graduates will be instructed to flip the tassel over to the left-hand side. Graduates receiving a Master’s degree begin with the tassel on the front left side and switch it over the right after receiving their diplomas. Graduates frequently keep their tassels as mementos. The graduation ceremony is rife with tradition, from the processional to the speakers to the manner of dress. Mastering the mortarboard can help graduates look their best on this special day.

Afterwards she went back to the doctor for an MRI and they could not find the tumor. She is feeling great and we are praising our Lord, Jesus Christ for her miracle healing. What are you waiting for? SYNOPSIS

A Brief Summary

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Home Projects Perfect for Spring

T

he rejuvenating spirit of spring makes this beloved season an ideal time for homeowners to take stock of their homes and properties and address any issues that arose during the winter. While some homes make it through winter unscathed, the harsh weather of the year’s coldest season can add several tasks to homeowners’ springtime to-do lists. While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tackled even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailor-made for spring.

INSPECT THE GUTTERS Gutters tend to bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, and come spring gutters are in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the effectiveness of gutters, which can easily accumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, homeowners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring, being sure to look for leaks while clearing

the gutters of debris and reattaching gutters that might have become detached from the home on windy winter days and nights. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly lead to flooding. TAKE STOCK OF ROOF SHINGLES Much like its gutters and downspouts, Each spring, homeowners should a home’s roof can suffer significant damage over the course of a typical inspect their gutters to ensure the gutwinter. Shingles may be lost to harsh ters are still attached to their homes winter winds and storms, so homeowners and free of debris. should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles homeowners should prioritize fixing or might even be lying around the property) replacing damaged shingles as quickly as or suffered damage that’s considerable possible. enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, CHECK FOR FREEZE DAMAGE especially those that suffered significant Frozen temperatures can be hard on damage during the winter. If left humans and homes alike, but unlike unchecked or unaddressed, problems with humans who can stay inside when damaged shingles can quickly escalate temperatures dip below freezing, homes into larger issues when spring rains are forced to withstand the elements and summer sun inevitably arrive, so throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. EXAMINE THE LAWN FOR LOW SPOTS Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home’s foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home’s foundation increases the risk of potentially costly damage, while low spots on the lawn that go ignored can make great breeding grounds for insects, including mosquitoes, when the weather warms up. When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home’s foundation. Assessing potential property damage is a rite of passage for homeowners in the spring. Though some damage is significant, oftentimes even novice DIYers can work their homes and properties back into shape in time to enjoy spring and summer.
