Restoring Your Property After Restoring a yard after a long winter is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. Harsh winds and heavy snow can take their toll on even the most beautiful landscape. Spring is a homeowner’s first chance to survey the damage and begin restoring the yard to where it was before all those strong winds and snowstorms. To get started on your yard this spring, consider the following tips. • Don’t begin too early. The early bird might get the worm, but the early homeowner might get a damaged lawn. If temperatures for an upcoming free weekend are unseasonably warm, it’s best to avoid doing spring yard cleanup until there have been several warm weekends to thaw the ground. Unless the ground has completely thawed, footsteps on the yard will damage the grass, compacting the soil and preventing the air and moisture that soil needs from doing its job and penetrating the soil. What’s more, if the yard is raked before the ground has thawed, the rake might just be pulling the grass out by its roots. • Survey the property. A close survey of the property will give homeowners an idea of just how big or small their restoration project will be. A thorough survey will reveal any problem areas and may also reveal some unexpected guests. Rabbits and squirrels often nest in yards during the winter. Rabbits will nest in the ground, while squirrels typically build nests made of leaves in the trees. Unless it’s entirely necessary, avoid removing any nests, and be sure to carefully inspect the yard before the season’s first mow. • Out with the old. When the cleanup process is ready to begin, it’s time to remove remnants from last season. This includes removing any dead plants as well as last year’s mulch. If new mulch is simply thrown on top of old, plants could suffocate. Dead leaves also tend to gather during the winter, often up against fences or a home’s exterior walls. Rake
PAGE 14
Winter
up these dead leaves and add them to the season’s compost. • Get rid of thatch. Thatch can be soil’s worst enemy, preventing its access to the sunlight, air and moisture it needs to make the lawn look beautiful and healthy. Thatch removal can be tiresome, visit the local hardware store and pick up a de-thatching rake to make the job a little easier. Thatch removal isn’t always necessary every spring. Many homeowners have found de-thatching every other year is effective enough. • Aerate the yard to revive the soil. Soil often becomes compacted as spring becomes summer and summer becomes fall. This is especially true of yards that are heavily used, be it by kids playing outdoors or families who www.HouseHunterEtc.com
love to host warm weather gatherings in the yard. Aerating in the spring removes plugs of sod from the soil, loosening it up and making it easier for air and water to reach the roots. • Address those ugly bald spots. Bare spots in a yard can result from any number of things, be it a dog urinating in the yard or even disease. Early spring, when temperatures are a little cooler and promote grass growth, is a great time to address the yard’s bald spots. Do so by clearing away the spots and sprinkling the exposed soil with some grass seed. No matter how harsh the winter months might have been, spring is a great time for homeowners to recondition and restore the landscape around their homes. ∑

n io t a v o n e R e m o H f o Follow The 3 ‘P’s Before starting any project, be sure to consider the 3 Ps. Every home project begins with an idea and ends with the culmination of the job. In between, there are three main components of an improvement project that can mean the difference between success and frustration: Planning, permits and protection. Planning The initial stage of a renovation is the planning stage. Planning is when a homeowner works through the concept of the project and determines what is necessary to complete the task. Many people find it helpful to write out plans and draw up the concept on paper. This doesn’t require expensive architectural software. A simple piece of graph paper plotted with measurements and a sketch is often sufficient for small projects. If the job will be expansive and require an architect or engineer, he or she will often provide a technical drawing. If the project focuses more on decorating than building, some find it helpful to create a design board. This is where fabric swatches, paint color samples, pictures of furniture and accessories, and any other components of the room are put together. Include your personal style, this can be understated or over embellished with themes, era furniture or certain accents for your room. Having a design board enables the homeowner to go to the store with board in tow and match up items to things in the store. Another part of the planning stage is establishing a budget and determining the project’s financing. It can be helpful to make a list of all income and expenses and find out how much funding is left over for a project. When getting estimates on the work, whether it will be done by a contractor or a DIY project, the homeowner should then make a list of
approximate costs (rounding up) and then compare it against the available funds.
Permits Many projects, especially those involving building, demolition, or electrical work, require permits issued by the town, province or city in which the work will be taking place. The purpose of permits and subsequent inspections is often questioned by homeowners looking to circumvent the system. However, building permits are required to ensure public safety, health and welfare as they are affected by building construction, structural strength, zoning, and code requirements. In essence, building permits are how the government regulates safety and protects both current and future residents of the property. In many cases, homeowners will need to visit the municipal building in their respective towns and apply for a permit. The permit may not immediately be issued. Oftentimes, there is a waiting period during which the project’s legality and safety is examined. Once the project is approved, the applicant will be able to file for the actual permit(s). There is usually a fee or fees for permit application, which covers any clerical work. Work should not begin until a permit is received, and then the permit generally has to be placed in plain sight, such as in a window of the building. Depending on building codes, inspections of the work may need to take place after all of the project is completed or during certain phases. For example, the building of a deck may require inspections after footings are installed and secured, and before the upper portions of the decking materials are attached. If an inspection takes place afterward, the inspector will be looking for key code issues to determine whether the work was completed successfully. If a contractor was used, he or she may have to be present
Brought to you by:
at the time of the inspection. If the work passes, an approval will be given and put on record. If the work fails, applicable repairs will have to be made and a reinspection will be scheduled. Should a home be put on the market, all permits may need to be on file or in the homeowners’ possession in order for a certificate of occupancy to be issued to the new buyer. Failure to have permits can hold up the process or result in fines.
Protection Homeowners about to begin a project also need to emphasize safety. There are a number of things that can be on hand to make a work environment safer. These include: • Eye protection: This is especially important when working with flying debris, cutting items, mixing caustic chemicals, etc. • Respirator or face mask: Cover the nose or mouth when there is dust or debris in the air that can enter the lungs. When working with toxic fumes, such as when using spray paints or chemical lubricants, a respirator can offer clean air. • Boots: Proper footwear ensures protection should an item fall on the foot or when walking where nails or other sharp items are located. • Fire extinguisher: A fire extinguisher should be nearby in the event of a mishap. • First aid kit: An abrasion or cut may occur, requiring prompt care. • Gloves: When the hands need to be protected or extra traction on surfaces is required, gloves can be a necessity. • Headphones: Safety headphones can protect the ears against loud, consistent noises from power equipment and tools. • Locks: A locked cabinet can store tools, paints, chemicals, and other improvement supplies so that young children or pets won’t have access. When homeowners take the time to plan, obtain permits, and secure the needed protection for a job, they help ensure a safer job that is done correctly.

“Workin’ on Night Crew” Cleatus could feel himself nodding off as he watched the taillights of truck 346 slink off into darkness. He hadn’t realized he was asleep until the shovel honked him out. He blinked a few times then, as was routine, and started his truck toward the hundredfoot wide six-percent gradient that led out of the pit, winding around to a coal-hopper where he’d dump his load onto a conveyor that transported it to a plant that filled train cars and sent them cross-country. Then came the rain. A few drops. A few more. A flash of lightning. A clap of thunder. Presto! Everything was mud central. “Dispatch to all trucks in the coal bottom: stay where you are, do not attempt to travel up the six-percent. Repeat: do not attempt the six-percent.” “Truck 346 to Dispatch: I’m already halfway up.” “Dispatch to 346: Melody, can you find somewhere to pull off? One of the dirtbenches?” “I don’t know, dispatch! I passed the last one a minute ago!” “How’s the road feel, Melody?” “I’m hardly moving at all—!” Adrenaline decked Cleatus Martinez in the head: “365 Martinez to dispatch: I’m only about eighty yards behind her.” “How’s she lookin’?” “She’s moving, but slow. And she’s gonna slide, soon.” “Shovel six to 365, Cleatus: pull off at the next bench, you’re loaded high.” “Whose fault is that?” Cleatus snapped. “You were being a jerk to the only hot chick!” “Put a sock in it! I passed the last…shoot.” Melody’s truck had begun to slide backward. “Truck 365 to fifteen Steve, we got a situation. Can we get some ‘dozers, or—too late—!” There was nothing stopping her now, she was rolling backward and Cleatus had nowhere to go. He had, at most, ninety seconds. At the realization that life-threatening danger was a-knocking, it had been Cleatus’ impression that caffeine was the adrenaline kick he felt. This wasn’t the case. The adrenaline merely woke him; jump-starting his metabolism. His metabolism then processed all twelve NoDoze, lickety-split. Suddenly, the world was a dark tunnel with voices at one end and a heart beating quicker than a hummingbird on yellowjackets at the other. Time didn’t so much slow as it became…remote. Cleatus’ eyes now bugged out his head, increasing his amphibian similarity. His mind raced. PAGE 20
A Mine with a View He knew he couldn’t go forward. Turning right would drop him several hundred feet back into the coal-bottom, probably killing him and at the very least destroying the truck. Left was likewise a dead end. He couldn’t stay put, either. Melody was rolling backward, and quick. Cleatus got on the radio: “Dispatch! Anybody coming up the six-percent behind me?” A beat. “No, Cleatus; you’re clear.” “Roger,” he took his foot off the accelerator. The truck began to drift. Meanwhile, Melody was squawking: “Truck 346 to…uh…Dad! I’m headed backwards! What do I do—!” Fifteen Steve crackled back: “Everybody on the radio, shut up while I talk her through this. Melody: Listen to me very carefully.” “Okay.” “You need to turn the truck around, Melody. Let off the gas, wait till you start to slide, crank it to the right. You should swing left and be facing down the six-percent. Then you’re going to pull your brakes and dump your load while you slide.” “But Dad, Unit-Rigs can’t dump and roll at the same time like the Cat—” “That’s where the mud comes in—” “Why can’t I dump it facing up the sixpercent!?” “Because you’ll topple over backwards! Don’t argue, Melody!” “But I can’t turn it around like that!” “If you don’t, you’re gonna slide right over the berm, Melody!” At this point, Cleatus tuned out. In his adrenaline state, he had come to the same conclusion—except he’d pulled the parking break and begun to dump his load while drifting backwards. The supervisor’s conversation reminded him of physics, and why this was a bad idea. Suddenly, the horizon got lower, and Cleatus realized he was tipping backward in a 1.5 million ton haul truck. With a grunt he cranked the wheel. Now he was tipping backward and sideways, the truck beginning to creak and groan as several hundred tons brought stress where it wasn’t supposed to be. “365, Cleatus, what in the name of Clyde are you doing up there! Stay put!” Cleatus ignored his supervisor. BANG! Massive wheels came down and the bed bounced, shaking the entire vehicle and knocking coal-boulders over the side. www.HouseHunterEtc.com
by Kevin Bennett
It was tipping again, tipping— Cleatus wrenched the wheel. Now he was fishtailing down the six-percent, watching a river of mud and coal flow into the pit. He was still dumping as he drifted. He breathed, adrenaline playing the bongo on his heart. A few more moments and he slid the truck to a halt against the berm of the downward lane, right wheel sunk in the dirt and stuck enough not to slip any further. There was a method behind his madness. Over the radio Melody continued to squawk: “I’m not swinging this thing backward! I can’t! I can’t do it!” Cleatus unbuckled and ran across the wind-swept platform beyond his cab in steeltoed boots. Leaning over the right-hand rail and staring into the muddy, dusty, torrential rain, he saw Melody’s truck, forty yards distant, slowly sliding down the six-percent, coal spilling from overloaded sides as lightning did its best impersonation of a rave concert in the night. Cleatus knew what he was about to try was against all regulations, but there was no one else that could pull it off, and precious little time. Sprinting back to his cab, Cleatus snatched a hard-hat and slid down the ladder into the naked darkness of a deep coal pit. … to be Concluded next issue Sneak Peek … The front wheels leapt as the bed rose; enough so that the truck slid a different direction—toward the side of the road that ended in a cliff. At two miles an hour, brake lights screaming in harmony with Melody, bouts of brake-flame making drums and Cleatus underscoring with a deep-throated wail of Latino funk, truck 346 hurled toward certain destruction. Then, at the very last second—a creak, a squeal— BANG! CRASH!

Using Bold Paint Colors Paint is one of the least expensive and most versatile means to changing the look of a room. Choosing a color scheme can be challenging, which is why so many people stick with neutrals like beige and white. For those who are ready to add a spark of color, there are a few guidelines to consider. Color theory is a science and there are rules of using color that are taught as early as a child’s first foray into art class. We know there are primary, secondary and complementary colors on the
color wheel. Even novice home decorators can do well with color if they use the color wheel as their guideline. According to HGTV, color should flow throughout a house. Every room need not be painted the same color. However, colors should be complementary enough that they flow into one another. Don’t paint one room in child’s basic primary colors, while painting other rooms in jewel tones and pastels. Stick with one theme and carry it through the house.
Once you have decided to use a bold color, first find your color inspiration. Color combinations that appear in nature are more readily accepted by people, so look for an item in nature, such as a seashell or a flowering plant that you can base your color choices on. Others pull inspiration from a particular design item. For instance, maybe an area rug strikes your fancy. Use colors that appear in the rug in the room. Keep in mind that using bold color doesn’t mean you have to paint every wall from ceiling to floor in that color. Rather, if you’re just starting out with bold colors, select one wall to serve as an accent wall. Use that wall as your bold canvas and paint it with your chosen hue. Some people like to experiment with a more flashy color in a smaller space. If you’re nervous about beginning in the living

room or kitchen, how about trying out bold color in a smaller space, such as a powder room? A more intimate space might seem less overwhelming when painted in a bold color. Go for a deep purple or another jeweled tone. However, try to avoid greens in the bathroom, as they may reflect off of the mirror and cast a hue onto your face that makes you look unwell. Pinks and peaches will shed a rosy glow. If you will be incorporating complementary colors into the room, use the paint color swatch as your guide. Most paint manufacturers use three or four different shades on one sample card. When selecting a complementary shade, be sure to pick from the same tone on the card. That means if you’re choosing the darkest of color #1 from a card, you’ll want to choose the darkest from color #2.
Another idea is to leave walls neutral and use bold color on design accents. For example: paint the inside of niches, shelves or cabinets with glass doors in bright tones and the outside white to create an eye-catching space without going overboard. Put a bold color on moulding or use an appliance or a fixture in a bright color as your splash of boldness. Remember to have balance. If you will be painting an entire room in a bold color, think about having the other decor items in neutral colors. Sofas and rugs should be neutral colors, or consider toning down a vibrant color with the use of white molding or baseboards. All it may take is a little inspiration to get started on fun, inviting color schemes throughout your home. ∑

For the last eight years, Spring Creek Designs has been a leader of fine floral arrangements and decoration in Gillette. Owner, Kathy Jones developed her talent early on: “I originally started decorating cakes at Albertson’s and IGA and kept pestering the lady in the floral department to teach me how to do flowers. Eventually… it just kind of gets in your blood; I ended up managing the floral department there! It’s never boring. There’s always something new in this industry.” That’s no exaggeration, either. Spring Creek Designs’ arrangements are popular. “We’ve expanded three times; we just moved to this location in January. Moving into this building was a big jump up for us.” Spring Creek Designs has a rep, they never skimp on variety, they even have special equipment to maintain a variety of exotic arrangements, “We try to always have tropical flowers on hand; you’ve got to have a cooler set at a specific temperature to do that properly, but we have one here.”
Spring Creek Designs
PAGE 30
Kathy knows her customers, “We work with tropicals more than the other shops; we do a lot of work with dyed flowers — some of the more traditional shops don’t, but we find our clientele is a younger crowd, they really like the wild and crazy colors of the dyed flowers. We’re always trying to give the customer the best value we can for the dollar, always trying to do something different than we did before, keep it changing.” The rule at Spring Creek Designs is innovation. This upcoming season, Kathy says: “I’ve got probably the best crew I’ve ever had, as far as experience and creativity. With the additional space and everything, we’re not as limited as we were in the old shop. We can definitely do more things. We’re going to do a zombie walk for charity this summer—that’ll be a lot of fun!” It certainly will be! Local shopping like Spring Creek Designs is a breath of fresh air, where there’s always something new and enough imagination to meet any need —ghoul or no. ∑

Graduation season is right around the corner and scores of high schoolers are preparing to leave the nest for the first time. Parents of high school seniors often want to find a gift that both symbolizes the significance of graduation and proves useful in the fall when kids take their first step onto a college campus. Though most high school kids would love a new car for graduation, such a gift is not within reach for most parents nor is it practical, as many colleges don’t allow incoming freshmen to have cars on campus. While they might not be a new car, the following gifts can put a smile on a new grad’s face and prove useful at college, too.
Page 32
• Gaming console: Gamers may love to pack the latest gaming console among their belongings when they head off to college this fall. Though parents might want their kids hitting the books instead of playing video games, a gaming console can provide a welcome respite for college kids stressing out over their studies. In addition, gaming consoles can be great icebreakers, providing the avenue by which incoming freshmen can meet and befriend their fellow dorm dwellers. Some interactive gaming consoles, including the Nintendo Wii, can even help freshmen fight off the infamous “Freshman 15,” by encouraging physically active gaming. • Television: Like gaming consoles, new televisions make great ice-breakers at college. Chances are, your favorite high schooler has grown accustomed to Mom and Dad’s home theater system. While kids likely won’t be able to fit such a system in their dorm room, a flat-screen TV can fit into any dorm room and give freshmen a little home away from home.
www.HouseHunterEtc.com
• Computer: Today’s computers are more affordable than ever, and every incoming freshman can make good use of a new computer. When shopping, keep laptop computers in mind, as kids can take laptops along with them to class and study groups. If grads already have a new or relatively new computer, consider upgrading the computer’s accessories. For example, a new set of computer speakers can increase a computer’s functionality and might even serve as a less bulky home theater system. • Money: Though it’s not incredibly personal, money is a gift no collegebound recent graduate will turn down. Kids are going to need money more than ever before while they’re at college, where they’ll need to buy books, food and cover their social expenses. Parents might not want to give their new grad money for graduation, but such a gift makes perfect sense for aunts, uncles or other distant relatives. • Furniture: Dorm rooms are anything but roomy, but college-bound grads are still going to need some furniture. Consider functional furniture, such as bins, organizers or a new computer chair, that might not be as glamorous but will be very useful and effective. ∑

Support the Senior Send-Off! Another generation of students will soon launch themselves into the real world. Many parents remember this time with fondness and alarm. Fondness for those nostalgic memories of carefree youth; alarm because their teenagers are now in the same place, and most parents know exactly how they acted at that age. CCHS has a solution: the Senior Send-Off. After prom, every senior that made the dance will want to hang out with their classmates. What better way to facilitate such a thing than the Senior Send-Off,? With endless games and prizes—like black jack, poker, and a new car—there’s ample motivation for teens to keep out of trouble and enjoy themselves all night in a clean, safe, controlled environment among friends and peers. The more seniors we can get to the Senior Send-Off, the fewer unsafe parties and ridiculous illegal shenanigans there will be, with your help of course, this could be the most memorable for years!

OUCH!
SIMPLE
Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle! Answer on page 40 PAGE 34

Have a Memorable Memorial Day BBQ To many Americans, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. Though summer does not actually begin until later in June, Memorial Day weekend has become synonymous with backyard barbecues and trips to the beach. Backyard barbecues, in particular, have become a staple of Memorial Day weekend and the focus of many people’s festivities. This year, consider the following tips to make your Memorial Day barbecue safe and memorable. • Place the grill in a safe spot. Before any guests arrive or any fires are lit, make sure the grill is safely located on flat ground. Ideally, the grill should not be on the grass and should be away from trees or shrubs and any other flammable materials. If you need lighter fluid to start a fire, promptly put the fluid back in storage, away from the grill, once the fire has been lit. • Clean the grill. Memorial Day marks the opening of grilling season for many grillmasters. Make sure the grill has been thoroughly cleaned and that there are no leftover ashes from last season clogging the vents. Even if you thoroughly cleaned the grill at the end of last season, give it a once-over with a soapy sponge at the start of the season to clean any cobwebs, or dirt and grime that might have collected over the winter. • Stock up on charcoal. Falling short in the charcoal department is a backyard barbecue faux pas that can bring the festivities to a halt. Because the weather in late May can sometimes be unpredictable, make sure you have extra charcoal on hand should strong winds or colder temperatures make it
MAY 2013
difficult to build a strong fire. • Spice things up. Why not use this year’s Memorial Day barbecue to add a little extra flavor to traditional barbecue fare? Soak some dried herbs like rosemary, bay leaves or oregano in water and add them to the grill. These flavorful herbs will make the food taste better, and the grill will likely emit a more pleasant fragrance as well. • Prepare foods for guests with varying palates. Vegetarians and vegans love a good backyard barbecue just as much as their carnivorous friends and family members. Cook some vegetable kabobs and prepare some salads for guests who don’t eat meat. Consider purchasing a smaller grill for veggies only, as vegetarians and vegans might not prefer to eat kabobs grilled on the same grill as meat. • Keep the forks in the utensil drawer. Never use a fork to do a spatula’s job. Poking foods on the grill with a fork allows the juices that make grilled foods so delicious to escape, resulting in drier fare that’s not nearly as flavorful. Use a spatula or tongs to flip foods, including burgers, steaks, chicken, and even hot dogs. • Make sure foods have completely defrosted before placing them on the grill. When cold meat is placed on the grill, it reduces the grill’s temperature and prevents juices from getting seared in the food. So make sure all foods have been defrosted to ensure your foods are flavorful and the grill stays hot. This year, welcome the unofficial start of summer with a fantastic and successful Memorial Day barbecue in the backyard with family, friends and great food! ∑

pounds pork spareribs red onion, finely chopped garlic cloves, crushed tablespoon grated fresh ginger tablespoon peanut oil cup pineapple juice tablespoons fish sauce cup tomato paste cup fresh lime juice tablespoons honey cup Thai sweet chili sauce
Separate ribs by slicing the bones with a large knife or cleaver. Simmer separated ribs in large pan of salted water until just tender, about 30 minutes. Drain. Rinse under cold running water and rinse again. Let cool completely. Place onion, garlic, ginger, and oil in a small pan. Stir fry over medium heat until softened, about 5 to 10 minutes. Add pineapple juice, fish sauce, tomato paste, lime juice, honey and 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce. Bring to a boil. Simmer gently until thick, 10 minutes. Let cool completely. Brush the sweet and sour mixture over the ribs. Grill according to instructions below, basting with the remaining chili sauce throughout. Serve hot. When using an outdoor grill: Grill over medium-hot coals, turning frequently and basting, until brown and crusty, 15 minutes. When using a broiler: Preheat broiler. Broil, removing from under the broiler every 5 minutes to baste, until brown and crusty, 15 minutes. Think ahead: Precook the ribs up to 1 day in advance. Cool completely. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Make glaze up to 1 day in advance. Cover and refrigerate. Note: Precook the ribs in simmering water to remove the layer of outer fat. This not only prevents flare-ups during cooking, but also allows the rib meat to stay tender and juicy inside and crispy on the outside. ∑ PAGE 35
MOM
may appreciate chocolate or flowers this Mother’s Day, but for children who want to offer her something a little more ecofriendly there are a number of different gift options to make Mom’s big day enjoyable. • Make a Basket of Gardening Gear Garden plants and supplies are perhaps the greenest gifts to give Mom. Plants are so plentiful and varied that there are bound to be ideal flowers or greenery for every mother’s taste. Compile different gardening essentials, such as seeds or seedlings, organic soil mix, mulch, all-natural compost, and a few different planting containers. You can also include gardening gloves and ergonomic tools made of recycled materials. Finish the gift with the inclusion of a book that describes different garden designs and gives tips for beginners. • Dine at a Local Restaurant Many families take Mom out for a meal on her special day. To make the experience eco-friendly, select among restaurants that are close to home to conserve fuel. Explore the possibilities of restaurants that may serve foods made with local, organic ingredients. • Pay For a Car Tune-Up Improving the gas mileage on Mom’s car is one gift that can be environmentally friendly. According to the United States PAGE 36
Department of Energy, keeping a car in shape can help save money and improve fuel economy. Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve Mom’s gas mileage by as much as 40%. Also, be sure to have her car tires properly inflated. She can be losing gas mileage by 0.3% for every 1 psi drop in all four tires. Getting an oil change with the recommended grade of motor oil is another gas mileage improvement measure. • Eco-Friendly Kitchen Items It may be a major faux pas to give Mom an appliance or a new vacuum for Mother’s Day. However, if your mother is an avid cook or baker, she may appreciate some new mixing bowls or utensils made from recycled materials. If Mom is the consummate entertainer, get her new glass tumblers and sipping straws made from recycled glass. They are perfect for serving cocktails and outdoor entertaining. • Pamper with Organic Products What mom doesn’t enjoy a little pampering from time to time? You can treat your mother to a spa experience at home by assembling a basket full of organic shampoo, conditioner, massage oils, bath salts, and any other organic spa items you can find. • Spend The Day Outdoors Most moms cherish any gift from their www.HouseHunterEtc.com
children, whether lavish or simple. A nice, eco-friendly gift is to spend time together. Research local parks or hiking trails and plan a day where you both commune with nature. Explore the landscape and be on the lookout for birds. Plan to finish the day with a homemade, picnic lunch. These are just a few fun ways to make Mom’s day extra special! ∑

We may never know the real story, but the bucking horse and rider will always represent Wyoming. The University of Wyoming first used the bucking horse and rider in 1921. I. During World War 1, Wyoming soldier George Ostrom while stationed in France in 1918 designed the bucking horse and rider logo using his horse, Red Wind, as the model. II. In 1935, Secretary of State, Lester Hunt, commissioned artist Allen True to design the bucking horse and rider logo for the license plates with no specific horse as the model. Some say he gave True a picture of Stub Farlow and his horse Deadman. III. Others believe the horse is Steamboat the horse that couldn’t be ridden. MAY 2013
