Let Centerpieces Add Style to Special Occasions Design elements and decorations can help set the mood for special events. Centerpieces are one such design element that can set a strong tone for dinner parties. Centerpieces can be easy to create, even for hosts working with limited budgets. Decorating the dining table with a visually stunning centerpiece may be all the creative touch hosts need to impress their guests as they sit down to dinner. Whether you prefer simple centerpieces or something more elaborate, follow these tips for centerpiece success. •Size To determine which centerpiece to use, party hosts must first calculate a few things to come up with an appropriate size for the centerpiece. The first consideration is the size of the table. Scale the centerpiece to the dimensions of the table. The more people you can seat at the table, the larger the centerpiece can be. Also think about the size of the room. Rooms with high ceilings or large architectural accents may accommodate larger or taller centerpiece more capably
C a l l / Te x t Jamie Pedersen 307-680-1239 than smaller rooms. Centerpieces that are transparent can create height without blocking guests’ views. •Materials Hosts can use just about any materials they wish when creating centerpieces. Floral arrangements make for popular centerpieces because flowers are available in a wide array of colors, sizes and heights. Plus, flowers can be chosen based on personal preferences, season or budget. Their sweet aroma also adds another sensory experience to a party. But hosts are not limited to centerpieces that feature flowers. Fresh fruit, seashells, pebbles, marbles, candy, and even live fish are just a few of the materials that can be used to create memorable centerpieces. Think about which materials might provide a conversation starter at the dinner table and build around that. •Placement As their name implies, centerpieces generally go in the center of the table. But creative hosts you can play with placement if they so desire. Rather than one large centerpiece, consider creating a table runner of sorts through the middle of the table that features various smaller centerpieces. This can be useful when a larger element would take up too much room on the table.
Factor the height and visual line of guests when arranging centerpieces as well. Sit at the table with your elbows on the table surface and arms bent up. The height of your fists is the general sight line. Avoid centerpieces that fall within this sight line. Use a pedestal to raise up a centerpiece or keep the centerpiece lower so guests can converse across the table. Think about placing smaller replicas of your main table centerpiece elsewhere in the entertaining space, such as near the entryway and in the powder room, to tie everything together. Centerpieces are a key design element when hosting a special event, adding visual appeal to a space while helping any party appear more upscale.
Candles are just one of the items that can be used to create elegant centerpieces.

How To Avoid The Holiday Shopping Rush Holiday shopping can be both fun and hectic. While it’s fun to scour stores looking for can’tmiss gifts for your loved ones, shopping amongst the crowds also can prove hectic. While online shopping has made department stores somewhat less crowded come the holiday season, the National Retail Federation notes that online shopping during the 2014 holiday season accounted for just one-sixth of all holiday shopping. The opportunity to see and feel potential gifts in person compels many people to do the majority of their holiday shopping in-store, and there are ways for such shoppers to avoid the holiday shopping rush as they begin their quests for the perfect gifts. • Shop during off-peak hours. Weekends and weeknight evenings tend to be the busiest times to go holiday shopping. Professionals who have weekends off may put off their shopping during the week, choosing to do so on Saturday and Sunday afternoons when they have extra time to browse and comparison shop. Shopping off-peak hours, such as during weekday mornings or even early mornings on weekends, is a great way to avoid crowds. Parents of young children might want to take a morning or even a full day off of work to get their holiday shopping done so they can avoid shop-
ping with their kids in tow. You can probably move around more quickly if you choose to shop while the kids are in school, and this also affords you time to find gifts for the kids.
• Make a list. Knowing what you want to buy online can decrease the amount of time you spend wandering around malls and stores. The longer you linger without an idea of what to buy, the greater the chance you will be joined by fellow shoppers. If possible, call stores before you leave the house to confirm if they have certain items in stock, or buy items online from retailers who
offer an in-store pickup option. Checkout lines for in-store pickup items are often separated from more traditional checkout lines, further reducing your risk of waiting in long lines. • Shop local businesses. Small local businesses may not boast the inventory of larger retailers you’re liable to encounter at the mall, but local small businesses tend to deal with thinner crowds than national stores during the holiday season. Items in such businesses may be more unique than items sold at nationwide retailers, and when you shop at smaller businesses, you likely won’t be forced to hunt for parking spots or wait on long checkout lines. • Start shopping early. Crowds only grow bigger and more impatient between Black Friday and the final days before Christmas, so shoppers who can find the time to shop before the height of the shopping season might find parking lots and checkout lines more to their liking. In addition, shopping early affords shoppers more time to find the best deals. The holiday shopping rush hits full swing in the weeks before Christmas Day, but there are many ways shoppers can get their shopping done and avoid the crowds at the same time.

Enjoy A Frugal Fall Road Trip
Road trips are a staple of autumn for many motorists. Fall foliage and moderate temperatures make the months of September and October ideal months to hit the open road for weekend getaways. Fall road trips rarely take drivers too far away from home, but traveling can still be costly. Fortunately, there are many ways to make road trips more affordable without sacrificing fun.
sites like Priceline.com or Hotwire. com, which may offer heavy discounts on rooms. • Take steps to conserve fuel. Lodging might prove your biggest expense on a fall road trip, but fuel likely won’t be too far behind. Drivers can cut fuel costs in several ways. Before beginning your trip, take your car in for a tuneup so any issues that might affect fuel efficiency are addressed be-
money should plot their routes in advance so they can avoid potentially costly problems like detours or road work that can waste fuel and lead to hours sitting in traffic. Use a GPS device during your trip so you can be alerted to any unexpected developments that might cost you time and money. Plotting your route in advance also allows you to find affordable dining and lodging options and choose roads that don’t require drivers to pay tolls. • Invite some friends and family along. Inviting friends and family on a weekend getaway can make the trip more fun and more affordable. If you have room in the car, inviting friends along allows you to split fuel costs, and you may even save on lodging if you find a hotel that won’t charge for extra guests in the room. Friends and family also can help split the cost of supplies.
• Explore alternatives to more traditional lodging. If your road trip includes an overnight stay, consider alternatives to traditional lodging. Hotels might stretch your budget, but depending on where you plan to go, you might have some less traditional alternatives. Airbnb.com allows homeowners and even some apartment dwellers to rent their homes and apartments to travelers, and these listings may pale in comparison to rates offered by nearby hotels. If weather permits, look for local campsites and spend your nights sleeping outdoors under the autumn stars. If you prefer hotels, look for deals on
fore you hit the open road. Poorly inflated tires force the engine to work harder and burn more fuel, so make sure tire pressure matches the levels recommended in your owner’s manual before embarking on your trip and even along the way if you feel your car is not running as smoothly as it could be. Another way to conserve fuel is to remove excess items from the trunk. If you don’t plan to hit the links on your trip, leave your golf clubs at home. • Plot your route. Spontaneity may make fall road trips more fun, but drivers looking to save
• Bring your own food. Food is another big expense road trippers must account for. But you can save money on food by bringing your own meals along on the trip. Prepare some sandwiches the morning that you leave and keep them fresh in a cooler so you don’t have to pay for lunch. In addition, pack some snacks so you and your passengers can quickly and affordably quell any hunger pangs that arise while you’re on the road. If you plan to stay in a place with its own kitchen, cook your own dinners so you don’t have to spend money dining out. Road trips are a staple of autumn, when drivers can still enjoy the open road without breaking the bank.

How To Raise Kids Who Grow Up Giving
November
Generosity is something children can learn at an early age and continue into adulthood.
The message of giving has reached new levels in recent years. While charitable endeavors have long been the center of many local community groups’ outreach efforts, social media has made charitable efforts as popular as ever, with millions taking part in exercises such as the Ice Bucket Challenge and other ventures meant to raise awareness for charitable causes. Charitable giving is a family tradition in many households. Many parents find that the earlier they introduce their children to charitable giving and volunteering, the more likely their kids are to embrace these efforts, both immediately and into adulthood. Parents can impart lessons to their youngsters about the importance of giving during the end of the year, when many charities raise their public profiles, or when newsworthy events, such as devastating storms, draw attention to the less fortunate. Nancy Phillips, founder and president of DollarSmart Kids Enterprises, Inc., says it’s been scientifically proven that giving increases self-esteem and self-confidence. Children who learn that they can help others will soon real-
ize they have the power to make a difference. Recognizing that they can make a big change is a very empowering discovery for kids. Here’s how parents can foster a love of giving.
• Choose age-appropriate tasks. Young children do not have a lot of money, so try to find charitable tasks that allow them to donate their time and skills. Kids can help make cookies for bake sales or participate in food drives in front of grocery stores for certain charities. • Let children choose the beneficiary of their efforts. Children may have their own ideas about who they want to help. Let kids choose because they’re more likely to get behind the effort if they feel their input is valued. • Lead by example. Don’t just pay lip service to the idea
of being charitable. Provide a good example by getting involved yourself. Make sure the entire family gets involved with the effort of giving. • Let children see where their efforts are going. Writing a check is a rather unceremonious way of giving that may not resonate with young children. But if they can see food being delivered to the hungry or pet supplies going to an animal shelter, they can see the fruits of their efforts paying off. • Create a giving account or box. Make it a family tradition that members of the household will donate an item they receive or a small amount of money to the box each month. At the end of the year, the family can deliver those funds and gifts to a charity of choice. • Talk about giving at dinner. Make philanthropy a regular part of family conversation. Discuss the plight of the less fortunate with your children, focusing on the value of volunteering and helping others. Children can learn to be generous and give to others at an early age, and those that do are more likely to grow into charitable adults.

Clean Carpets and Crazy Conniptions By: Kevin Bennett
Here’s the thing: modernity has brought us a variety of innovations and technological developments, and carpet isn’t immune to that progress--nor should it be! As it turns out, there are quite a variety of measures which can be taken to protect how a carpet looks and feels. For example, there’s SmartStrand Carpet technology, which has been developed such that SmartStrand Carpets will literally accept the absolute worst beating, but with hot-water steam cleaning, they can be brought back to a good-as-new condition. There’s actually a video online done for an advertisement promotion where this kind of carpet is subjected to defecation, urination, abuse, mud, and trampling from the likes of elephants, camels and rhinoceros. When the dastardly destruction is done, some cleaners come through with a hot-steam vacuum array and are able to get the carpet looking as clean as though it had just been purchased; and that without any kind of soap or detergent. Look up “SmartStrand Zoo Challenge” online, if you’d like to see for yourself.
Carpet Express Direct of Gillette Wyoming offers SmartStrand options, as well as tile, wood, paneling, vinyl, exercise floors, rubber floors, and more. Perhaps it isn’t your prerogative to have a circus host a jungle danceparty in your living room, but children have just this…this tendency to cause enough damage you’d wonder whether or not they had some means of advancing such a party on the sly. It only takes one eight year old tearing through your living room with a chocolate milk in one hand, a sloppy grilled cheese sandwich dribbling out his mouth, and a nauseated cat under the other arm for you to realize a potential mess-monsoon is about to start. It only takes that kid tripping over the base of a chair and exploding cheese, chocolate, and cat hair all over the rug for you to realize a carpeting option which has been engineered to take a licking and keep on ticking makes a lot of sense, in retrospect. But when the dog comes stumbling in fresh from rolling in the mud being made by the rain outside, sees the kid’s lost sandwich and spilled milk, and only goes to do his natural
doggy duty, you could almost forgive the poor mutt for the mud he tracked in; if he didn’t decide to have a canine spasm and sling nastiness all across the room as he licked up the cheese while drying himsel at the same time. To the dog it was just time shake away the damp, to you and the carpet it was tantamount to genocide. But then the other kids in the house catch up to the one who gave his lunch up as an offering to the anti-carpet demons and tackle him, yelling: “String the scalliwag!” and spraying silly string just...everywhere. You’re just about ready to scream at the top of your lungs, giving vent to that particular vindicated mom-rage God has given all mothers, when in comes the man of the house with the guys from work and several sudsy beers dripping foam all over the place. Before you can scold them Jimmy Cockeye trips over the dog and spills beer all over the front of your dress; at which point you snap and just...kill everything in sight. And that’s when you realize: shoot; maybe you should’ve just gone with tile? But hey, at Carpet Express Direct of Gillette, tile is a covered option as well. As is wood, vinyl substitutes, linoleum, and any other flooring option you can imagine. There are definitely durable options available out there, though sometimes you’ve got a room of the house where no pets kids or mess-makers may enter, and you need some kind of soft shag to run your toes through. Sometimes it’s just time to remodel. There are no shortage of reasons to drop by Carpet Express Direct of Gillette and see what’s available. With the best prices and selection in Northeast Wyoming, you’re sure to find a great carpet at a great price to give your house that new feel and look. Right now, drop in to Carpet Express Direct for $3.79/sq. ft. Country Home Georgia Sand LVP, New Mexico White Sand Vinyl at $1.99/ sq. ft., Solitude Tundra carpet at $1.99/sq. ft., and Historical Saddlehorn Laminate at just $2.49/sq. ft. Festive Deviled Eggs I love the idea of making regular deviled eggs and then adding paprika and a green onion to make them more festive! 1 pound mild bulk breakfast sausage 4 tablespoons butter 3 cups sliced leeks, white and pale green parts only, cleaned well (about 2 large leeks) 2 Granny Smith apples, cored and chopped 1 cup chopped celery with leaves 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 cup dried cranberries, rehydrated in boiling water for 15 minutes and drained 1 tablespoon chopped fresh sage leaves 2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary 6 cups boxed bread cubes (croutons) 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves 2 to 3 cups chicken stock 1 tablespoon salt 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
Directions: 1. 2.
3.
4.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Saute the sausage in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat until cooked through, crumbling coarsely with the back of a spoon, about 10 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the sausage and drippings to a large bowl. Melt the butter in the same skillet over mediumhigh heat. Add the leeks, apples, celery and poultry seasoning to the skillet and saute until the leeks are soft, about 8 minutes. Mix in the drained cranberries, sage and rosemary. Add the mixture to the sausage, then mix in the croutons and parsley. Next add the chicken stock a little at a time until the stuffing is very moist. Be sure not to overdo it; it shouldn’t be mushy. Season with salt and pepper. Place in a casserole dish. (The stuffing can be made to this point 2 days before Thanksgiving, refrigerated.) Bake in a 14-inch oval or 9 by 13-inch rectangular casserole dish and place, uncovered, in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until the top is crispy and the center piping hot. Remove and serve immediately. *Cook’s Note: If stuffing a turkey, the stuffing must be cold before being placed in the bird.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

November PRICE REDUCED!
68 Five Finger Peaks Rd - $ 349,000
Inspect exterior walls to see if any paint is peeling or blistering on the house or outbuildings. According to Carl Minchew, Director, Benjamin Moore Paints, “Peeling paint is a sign that the existing paint film is failing and can no longer protect the siding of the building. Left uncorrected, the siding itself will deteriorate, leading to expensive repairs in the future.”

Decadent desserts are often the culmination of family meals or meaningful social occasions. Dessert signals the end of special events and lets guests know it is now acceptable for them to plan their exits. Party hosts should not feel pressured to bake or create elaborate desserts. Some guests may even bring their own homemade desserts as tokens of appreciation to offer their hosts. However, for those who want to ensure there is dessert available in the event company does not bring a cake or box of cookies, the following are some ways to dress up store-bought treats to make them look like impressive desserts.

• Gourmet ice-cream sandwiches: Purchase ready-made cookies in your favorite varieties as well as a flavor of ice cream that coordinates with the cookies (chocolate and mint works well). Allow the ice cream to soften slightly, then spoon
a bit onto one cookie and sandwich the ice cream with another cookie. Place the sandwiches back into the freezer to harden and set before serving. • Decadent drizzle: Any dessert can look like a professionally concocted confection with a creative display. Drizzle chocolate or raspberry syrup on the plate before placing your slice of cake or pastry. Top with a dusting of confectioner’s sugar. • Shaved chocolate: Turn an ordinary brownie or sundae into something stunning with shaved chocolate. Run a vegetable peeler along the side of a favorite bar of chocolate to create a garnish. • Warmed up: Heat any storebought pie before serving and top with fresh whipped cream. Your guests will swear it’s homemade.

Gobble Up Turkey Nutrition Turkey is a healthy food that need not be reserved strictly for holiday meals.
Turkeys are seemingly everywhere come November, whether it’s at your favorite grocery store, on television cooking shows and possibly hanging out in the wild of a nearby nature preserve. Turkeys are the main course for many holiday dinners, and turkey leftovers also make for popular meals once holidays have come and gone. Although turkeys earn most of their attention during the holiday season, their health benefits can be enjoyed throughout the year. Turkey contains roughly 34 calories and 1 gram of fat per ounce (33 grams) of meat. It is low in saturated fat and is a good source of protein. In fact, just one 3 to 4 ounce serving of turkey provides 65 percent of a person’s recommended daily intake of protein. Protein helps fuel the body and can help a person feel full longer. People who are customizing their diets to protect against cancer may want to include turkey on the menu. Turkey contains selenium, which can
promote healthy function of the thyroid and boost the immune system. Selenium also helps to eliminate free radicals in the body through its antioxidant power. Those who need to increase their B vitamin intake also can turn to turkey. According to Livestrong, a serving
of turkey has 36 percent of the daily allowance of vitamin B3, which helps process fats in the body. It also contains 27 percent of the RDA for vitamin B6, which helps maintain steady blood sugar levels, among other things. In addition to these vitamins, turkey also is rich in many minerals, including iron, phosphorous, potassium, and zinc.
While turkey is healthy, the way it is prepared can affect just how beneficial it is to one’s diet. For example,
slathering the meat with butter or dousing it in rich gravies may negate some of turkey’s positive attributes. One of the most popular ways to cook turkey is to roast it. Let fresh herbs and a citrus juice marinade add the desired flavor. Place the turkey on a roasting rack so that any fat will drain to the bottom of the pan. Baste the turkey with fresh marinade to keep it moist. It’s best to cook any stuffing outside of the turkey so there is no potential for contamination by bacteria. Make stuffing healthier by using whole-grain rice, vegetables, dried fruits, and nuts in lieu of a heavy bread base. Leftover roasted turkey can be ground and used to make tacos and burgers or chopped and turned into turkey salad. The possibilities for leftover turkey are endless, especially for cooks willing to try their hands at something new.

Fall Home Tip #4
THE EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM
Caulk Windows
But the late mouse gets the cheese.
Be sure to caulk around windows and doorframes to prevent heat from escaping. “Caulking and sealing openings is one of the least expensive maintenance jobs,” says Michael Hydeck, Hydeck Design Build, Inc., Telford, PA, and National President, National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). “Openings in the structure can cause water to get in and freeze, resulting in cracks and mold buildup,” he says. www.bobvilla.com

If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love. Love never gives up. Love cares more for others than for self. Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have. Love doesn’t strut, Doesn’t have a swelled head, Doesn’t force itself on others, Isn’t always “me first,” Doesn’t fly off the handle, Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others, Doesn’t revel when others grovel, Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth, Puts up with anything, Trusts God always, Always looks for the best, Never looks back, But keeps going to the end. Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. Corinthians 13: 1 – 9 the Message
