Did You Know?

Gillette - Real Living 7.5” x 4.988 Color Similar in concept to bridal registries, charity registries afford charitable men and women an easy avenue to encourage their friends and families to donate to causes they care about. Charity registries need not be made in conjunction with special occasions, though some couples tying the knot have asked their wedding guests to make donations via their charity registries in lieu of more traditional wedding gifts. But men and women can establish charity registries simply to raise awareness and money for a cause they care about. www.Justgive. org, a website devoted to helping men and women find, learn about and support virtually any charity, allows visitors to the site to establish charity registries to facilitate their fundraising efforts. Once the registry is established, men and women can share their registry information with loved ones, relating their own connection to the cause while encouraging those who can afford to do so to make a donation.

Testimony

of the Month

November 2014

Testimony of the Month: I had torn my fascia. That is where the pain had come from but no one had any idea why I was so weak and could hardly move anything. I ended up going home in a wheelchair and there I stayed for two months. One day I asked our friend the “physician’s assistant”, to take me down to the Healing Rooms, So I went, as people were praying for me I felt something like warm butter run down my entire body. I knew I had been touched by the healing power of Jesus Christ. I was so excited, I got out of my chair and started jumping up and down. Everyone was so excited. I can remember my friend was crying and shaking their head, thanking God for healing me. God is not a respector of persons, He is still healing today. Come into the Healing Rooms in Gillette and let us pray for YOU! OPEN: Thursday evenings Beginning at 6:30 pm. Your Company is Arriving Early, WHAT NOW?

Some Tips To Manage A Messy House And Ways To Greet Guests With Hospitality

hardwood floors or take out the vacuum cleaner and give floors a once-over to combat dust bunnies. Plump sofa pillows and open the blinds to make the room brighter and more inviting. Freshen up a dining room table by putting on a new tablecloth and move a potted plant from elsewhere in the home to the table for an easy centerpiece.

Many people like to host parties for friends and family members. Advanced notice of such gatherings gives hosts ample time to get organized. But sometimes all that planning and organizing can go out the window, when guests are arriving early, or even out of the blue. So what’s a host or hostess to do? When tasked with last-minute hosting duties, first figure out how much time you have before the guest or guests are expected to arrive. This allows you to take inventory of your home. While you will not be able to give every room a complete overhaul, you likely will be able to squeeze in some lastminute straightening up. Focus your energy on one or two rooms of the house where you and your guests can spend your time. When getting the house ready at the last minute, empty the sink of dirty dishes and load them into the dishwasher. Wipe down countertops and tame any cluttered counters. Simply make piles of these items and move them to another room out of sight. In a living room or dining room, give surfaces that are at eye level a quick dusting. Sweep crumbs from

November

Focus significant attention on the bathroom. Counters and sinks should be wiped clean, and fresh hand towels should be hung on the rack for guests. Give the toilet a good scrubbing, and vacuum any hairs or dust that has accumulated in the corners of the floor. A few spritzes of perfume or air freshener can make the space smell inviting. These quick cleaning tasks should take no more than an hour.

When serving meals or snacks, be honest with your guests. Explain that you did not have a chance to visit the grocery store, and suggest they bring a cake, cookies or another snack. Add a splash of flavor to water by floating slices of lemon, cucumber or apple in a decorative pitcher. Crackers and sliced cheese can serve nicely in a pinch. Guests who will be arriving around dinner time will likely expect a meal. Casseroles and pasta dishes can be expanded to feed a crowd. Select a meal that is filling so you won’t have to prepare as much food. If you simply do not have enough ingredients to whip up something substantial, ask guests if they would mind dining out or ordering in. With an array of restaurants offering delivery or curb side pickup, you likely can order anything from steak dinners to a bucket of chicken, depending on your preferences. As long as you are gracious and accommodating, guests won’t mind if you do not provide something home cooked.

If unexpected guests are immediate members of your family, you may not have to go to great lengths to organize your home and prepare a spread of refreshments. Still, everything should be orderly and you can do your best to be welcoming no matter how short the notice.

Teaching Kids to Give Back Charitable giving is a part of the holiday season for many people who are spurred to donate for various reasons, including the general spirit of giving synonymous with the holidays.

neighbors. The entire family can work together at a school, hospital or nursing facility. The earlier children become accustomed to giving back, the more inclined they may be to continue those efforts and make it a central part of their lives. Clean out the closet Donating items also can teach kids valuable lessons, including helping them recognize how fortunate they are and how they are in a position to help those who are not so lucky. Parents and children can work together so it doesn’t seem like the little ones are the only ones giving

That giving does not have to be exclusive to adults. Parents who want to show their youngsters this season is about more than presents can approach that task in various ways, including involving kids directly in giving back to their communities or helping the less fortunate. Volunteer work Kids of all ages can volunteer. Acclimate youngsters to the idea of volunteering this holiday season. Youngsters’ efforts need not be elaborate. Toddlers can help collect food for a food pantry while schoolaged children can assist elderly

away their belongings. Adults also should sort through their items and have an equally impressive pile of donations. In addition to local clothing collection bins, there are regional and national collection services that may even pick up items right from your home. Bake sale Another fun way children can get involved is by hosting a bake sale or craft sale. The proceeds of all items sold can be used to benefit a charity chosen by the kids. Let youngsters set the course for the creative extravaganza. Clean up Families can work together to clean up a stretch of beach or a local park or even make improvements to a neighborhood playground. Ideas include painting murals, installing benches and cleaning up litter. Just be sure to get permission from the property owner or appropriate civic authorities so that your project is not interrupted or deemed illegal. Educate others Children old enough to understand the plight of others can help to spread knowledge and awareness about particular issues. Ask a teacher if children can speak in front of the class about their charitable efforts and what others can do to make real changes.

Turkey Tidbits

Few foods receive the fanfare of turkey come the holiday season. The National Turkey Federation says Americans eat 46 million turkeys each Thanksgiving and another 22 million on Christmas. An additional 19 million enjoy turkey as part of their Easter celebrations. Though turkey is enjoyed throughout the year, it is most popular during the holiday season. Some celebrants may want to know more about this beloved bird before sinking their teeth into their next holiday meal. The following turkey tidbits may surprise you. • Turkeys are large game birds that are closely related to chickens, pheasants and quail. • The turkey’s scientific name is “meleagris gallopavo,” which is the wild turkey from which the domesticated turkey many people eat descends. There is another species of turkey known as the ocellated turkey, which is native to the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. • By the early 1900s, the wild turkey neared extinction. Restoration projects have increased the number of turkeys from approximately 30,000 birds back then to nearly seven million now.

• Despite their size, turkeys can fly in the wild. They often perch in trees to sleep to protect themselves from predators. Some domesticated turkeys may not fly because they have been bred to be overly large to

produce more breast meat. • The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds. • A male turkey is called a “tom” or a “gobbler,” while female turkeys are referred to as “hens.” Only the male will make the familiar gobbling sound, which is used to attract mates. • A hen is smaller than a gobbler and does not have the distinctive beard of modified feathers that gobblers have on their breasts. Males also have sharp spurs on their legs for fighting. • Male and female turkeys also can be differentiated by their droppings. Male droppings are spiral-shaped, while females’ look like the letter J. • Both genders of turkey have snoods (the dangling appendage on the face) as well as red wattles under their chins. • A hen can lay about 10 to 12 eggs over a period of two weeks. The eggs will incubate for 28 days before hatching. Baby turkeys are called “poults.” • Turkeys and peacocks may look similar, but they are not closely related. • Turkeys have excellent vision due to their eyes being located on the sides of their head. This gives the

November

birds periscopic vision. • The gizzard is a part of the turkey’s stomach that contains tiny stones that the bird has swallowed. The stones facilitate the digestion process. • Benjamin Franklin did not support the bald eagle as the nation’s symbol, feeling the turkey would be a better choice. In a letter to his daughter, he wrote, “He [bald eagle] is a rank coward; the little king-bird, not bigger than a sparrow, attacks him boldly and drives him out of the district. For in truth, the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird, and withal a true original native of America. Eagles have been found in all countries, but the turkey was peculiar to ours .”

• Turkeys will have 3,500 feathers at maturity. Rumor has it the costume worn by the “Sesame Street” character “Big Bird” is made of turkey feathers. • The turkey shares its name with a country. But why? A turkey bears some resemblance to the guinea fowl. Though it is native to eastern Africa, the guinea fowl was imported to Europe through the Ottoman Empire and came to be called the “turkeycock” or “turkey-hen.” When settlers in the New World began to send similar-looking fowl back to Europe, they were mistakenly called “turkeys.”

In 2007, the Worcester family, along with veterans, and others who had helped with their annual Christmas wreath ceremony in Arlington, formed Wreaths Across America, to continue and expand this effort, and support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This nonprofit organization continues the Arlington tradition as part of its mission to Remember, Honor and teach. In 2013, Wreaths Across America and our national network of volunteers laid over 540,000 memorial wreaths at over 900 locations in the United States and beyond. We accomplished this with help from 1659 fundraising groups, many corporate contributions, and donations of trucking, shipping, and thousands of helping hands. Our annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as the world’s largest veteran’s parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veteran’s homes and communities all along the way to remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach. Proceeds place a wreath at one of the participating cemeteries; help support our fundraising partners, educational and veteran’s services outreach. Please note that all sponsorships are sent directly to the location and no wreaths are sent to the individuals purchasing sponsorships. We welcome all to join us at any Wreaths Across America ceremony. If you would like to participate or help bring sponsored wreaths to your local community, please contact us and we will help connect you with other groups already working in your area.

Staying Safe On Winter Roads

Many people will remember the winter of 2013-14 for all the wrong reasons. Record low temperatures and heavy snowfall were the story last winter. With winter now on the horizon once again, many motorists are looking for ways to ensure their daily commutes or holiday trips to visit family and friends are as safe as possible. When wintry conditions, including snowfall, compromise driving conditions, it’s best for motorists to stay home. But avoiding roadways altogether is not always an option, so motorists who simply must venture out onto the roadways this winter can employ the following strategies to ensure they safely arrive at their destinations. • Consider winter tires. Many drivers are unsure if they need winter tires. All-season tires may suffice for those drivers who live in regions where heavy snowfall is uncommon. But winter tires are designed to perform when the temperatures are especially cold and in driving conditions featuring ice, slush and snow. Drivers who live in regions where snowfall is significant or even expected to be significant may want to install winter tires just to be on the safe side. Some drivers mistakenly believe that vehicle features such as anti-lock braking systems and traction control make their tires more capable of handling wintry roads. But such features do not provide more traction. ABS and traction control only prevent drivers from over-braking or overpowering the traction of their tires. Only better tires will improve traction. • Drive slowly. Many drivers mistakenly believe they only need to drive slow when snow is falling. But winter weather can make roadways unsafe even in areas that have not witnessed a single snowflake fall from the sky. Wet winter roads can quickly turn into icy winter roads, and no ABS system or traction control device can prevent a car that’s traveling too fast

November

from skidding out. Poor visibility is another reason to drive slowly in winter. Peripheral vision is often compromised when driving in winter, as dirt, salt or sand buildup on windshields and side windows and mirrors can make it hard for motorists to fully view their surroundings. Even if your vision is not compromised, a fellow motorist’s might be. So ease up on the

should your visibility be compromised. • Maintain your vehicle. A vehicle should be maintained regardless of the season, but it’s especially important that your vehicle perform at its peak in winter. A vehicle’s battery and windshield wipers are a winter driver’s best friend, but only if they are operating at optimal capacity. Being stranded on a

gas pedal in winter so you have more time to react to potentially adverse conditions. • Don’t drive too closely to other motorists. In addition to driving slowly, motorists also should leave extra room between their vehicles and the vehicles in front of them. In such conditions, for every 10 miles per hour drive a minimum of four car lengths behind the motorist in front of you. So if you are driving 50 miles per hour, be sure to leave 20 car lengths between you and the car ahead of you. This gives you ample time to react and builds in some extra response time

roadside in winter is more dangerous than in any other time of year. That’s because driver visibility is more compromised in winter, and it can be hard for motorists to see or avoid vehicles on the side of the road. Maintain proper fluid levels and make sure your battery is charged and the gas tank is full before making any winter trips. Wintry conditions often make driving especially hazardous. But drivers who adopt certain habits when driving in winter can greatly reduce their risk of accidents.

According to Giving USA, 72 percent of all U.S. charitable giving comes from individuals. Only 6 percent of charitable giving in the United States comes from corporations, and an additional 15 percent comes from foundations. Retention of charitable donors can be difficult, as only around 20 percent of donors give from year to year. However, those who are happy with the nonprofit’s efforts are likely to give between 10 and 12 percent more in individual donations if they are provided with what they need from the charity. Charities that fully disclose how donations are being used are likely to see bigger retention rates than those that don’t.

Much like their many of their human counterparts, pets do not always relish winter. Animals can experience arthritis pain or fatigue when the cold sets in. Shorter periods of daylight also may make them less active and likely to sleep for longer periods of time. In an effort to stay warm, some pets get creative. Cats can unintentionally put themselves in danger just to chase a chill away. The American Animal Hospital Association says cats will curl up against almost anything, including car engines, to stay warm. Cats caught in moving engine parts can be seriously hurt or killed. Before you turn your engine on, check beneath the car or make a lot of noise by honking the horn or rapping on the hood. Also, if you have exposed radiators in a home or apartment, construct a cover to prevent cats and dogs from climbing on the exposed coils. The hot water pumping through radiators can cause burns. Cats and dogs also may get too close to fireplaces, so use a protective screen to keepthem away from hot embers. Pets also can knock over portable heaters in an attempt to get warm. Look for models that automatically shut off if they fall over to reduce your risk of fire.

Pets often make wonderful additions to a household. Parents not only love pets because animals bring smiles to their children’s faces, but also because pets teach kids about responsibility. But the decision of whether or not to bring a pet into a home is a complicated one that parents would be wise to give ample consideration before making their final decision. The following are a few factors parents can consider when deciding if now is the right time to bring a pet into their household. Finances Money is often overlooked when deciding whether or not to bring a pet into a home. But pets can be expensive, and the potential cost of pet ownership must be fully explored. Pet adoption fees are often negligible, but families who prefer a purebred dog can expect to spend considerably more money than they would if they were to adopt a mixed breed dog from the local shelter. In addition, a pedigreed cat is likely to cost more than a cat adopted from the shelter. But those initial fees are only a small part of the expenses associated with pet ownership. Medical costs, including routine veterinary visits and

medication, pet insurance, food, and grooming costs can add up over time, so families already working on thin budgets might find it’s not financially prudent to bring a pet into their home until their finances stabilize. Families who tend to travel a lot also must consider the cost of sheltering the animal when they are out of town, while renters should determine if bringing a pet into a home will incur a higher rental deposit or if the animal is likely to cause damage, as puppies and kittens tend to do, that will ultimately cost them money when they move out of their rental. Demeanor When considering bringing a pet into a home, parents should consider both their own demeanor, their kids’ demeanors and the demeanor of the pet they are thinking of adopting. Dogs have their idiosyncrasies, but breeds tend to exhibit similar behaviors. Labrador retrievers, for example, tend to be active and energetic, while a typical English bulldog might be more laid-back and less prone to running around. Active families who enjoy spending time outdoors might prefer a more active dog, while families who enjoy relaxing at home might want a dog that’s equally comfortable lounging around the house. When considering cats, families should speak with a professional, be it a veterinarian or a representative at the local animal shelter, about the demeanors of different breeds to ensure they make the best decision. Parents of young children likely want a cat that’s playful as opposed to one who is likely to be standoffish with curious kids.

Did You Know? Though there is no official data that declares the bestselling holiday toy for children of all-time, it’s fair to assume the lovable “Sesame Street” figure Elmo is high on the list of most popular holiday toys. Much of that popularity can be traced to the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo in 1996. Though not the first Elmo doll, Tickle Me Elmo became the must-have gift of 1996, when parents searched far and wide for the doll that laughed when users tickled its stomach. During the holiday season of 1996, many people paid far beyond market price just so their children could wake up on Christmas or Chanukah and have a Tickle Me Elmo doll to call their own. Since 1996, Elmo has been reincarnated many times over, and each Elmo doll seems to inspire its own craze come the holiday season. Released in 1998, Walk ‘N’ Talk Elmo was a popular children’s gift, as was Rock ‘N’ Roll Elmo (1999), Tickle Me Elmo Surprise (2001), Chicken Dance Elmo (2002), and SHOUT Elmo (2005). In 2006,Mattel®, the company that produces the Elmo dolls, announced a special commemorative Elmo to mark the 10-year anniversary of the introduction of Tickle Me Elmo. That, too, sparked a buying frenzy, as some reports indicated private sellers were selling the latest Elmo, known as TMX Elmo, for thousands of dollars.
