Halloween is a great time to explore your creative side, especially when it comes to decorating for trick-or-treaters or planning a party. Make a foggy scene...Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. It is a good coolant because it can reach temperatures below that of ice and it will not leave a puddle or damp residue behind. Dry ice changes from a solid to a gas with no liquid form, through a process of sublimation. Place dry ice in punch bowls or beverage glasses. Or use dry ice in any other liquid to create billowing plumes of vapor that add to the spooky effects. Just be sure to handle dry ice very carefully and make sure it is inaccessible to curious kids.

Sapporo Japanese Steakhouse is a new Hibachi grill in Gillette with a full sushi bar. Located at 1000 East Boxelder Rd. in the Clarion Plaza, this unique restaurant opened May 1st of 2015, and is quickly becoming a town favorite. “Me and my partner, ten or twelve years ago, went to Japan and learned Japanese cooking over there,” says the restaurant’s owner, Aaron. Aaron owned several Hibachi restaurants in the US, most notably three well-received locations in Boston, before he moved his operations to Gillette Wyoming. With seasoned experience in running such an appealing restaurant, Aaron has transformed the space in the Clarion such that the diner is almost physically transported from America itself. With babbling fountains and that particularly unique oriental touch which should come with a good Hibachi grill, the dining experience of Sapporo is one of the most notably enjoyable ones a body can have in Gillette. Hibachi grills are, in general, one of the most entertaining ways to take in a meal. Hibachi chefs prepare the food right in front of your eyes, and through that preparation have learned a great variety of skills and tricks sure to entertain anyone. How can a person fail to enjoy themselves at a fine dining establishment where the chef can flip a bit of finely seasoned meat into your mouth from the grill? The best part is, when seated around the grill, there are naturally those who are adept at catching the food, and those who can’t seem to coordinate to save their lives. It’s as entertaining to watch as it is to participate. And who doesn’t like being able to catch authentic sake sprayed from the chef’s bottle? The Hibachi experience is entertaining and so unique. And a good dining experience at a Hibachi grill isn’t something that comes from a lack of professionalism. “We know how to keep things looking good and enjoyable for our customers,” says Aaron. In addition to the regular allure of the Hibachi experience, Sapporo Japanese Steakhouse does a number of weekly specials. They have a daily lunch special throughout the week at $7.95, and

a happy hour from 3 to 6 PM with 99 CENT DRAFT BEER! Depending on your malted beverage intake, you stand to actually save money at Sapporo by dropping by during happy hour and enjoying some fine Japanese cuisine. Furthermore, there’s a happy hour special of sushi and an appetizer. That’s very good with 99 cent draft beer—you’ve got to have something in your stomach! Furthermore, Sapporo Japanese Steakhouse has a variety of dining options; from the full Hibachi experience to the exquisite sushi bar. If you’re in the mood for some Japanese, but don’t feel like having the full dining experience, you can always order takeout online or over the phone. The friendly folks at Sapporo will tell you when the food will be ready, and you can determine what time is most convenient to drop by their restaurant and pick it up. Finally, Sapporo also does catering in order to fit the needs of all its Gillette clients. Do you have a corporate get together or a commencement ceremony of some type? Do you need something a little out-of-the-ordinary to spice up the event? Sapporo can bring some of the most delicious and exotic food in town, making your event even more unforgettable. There’s no reason not to have some of the most engaging entertainment right in front of you, while you enjoy some of the most elegant and delicious cuisine traditional Japanese people have been enjoying for years. Sapporo brings that experience to Gillette, and does it well. If you haven’t had the Hibachi experience yet, it’s time to get in that pickup truck and cruise on over to Sapporo. Sapporo Japanese Steakhouse is open from eleven in the morning to ten at night Monday through Thursday. During the weekends their hours are eleven AM to eleven PM on Friday and Saturday, and twelve PM to nine PM on Sundays. The dining scene in Gillette becomes more classy and cultured every year, and Sapporo is one of the most engaging and enjoyable dining experiences you’re likely to have. See for yourself! By: KC

CELEBRATING HALLOWEEN AT SCHOOL A Few Things To Keep In Mind For Your Child’s Halloween Celebration At School This Year

Many schools allow children to celebrate Halloween in the classroom. Festivities may include parades, classroom parties or trunk-or-treat fun in the school parking lot. Creating a safe and festive atmosphere for kids to celebrate Halloween is of the utmost importance for parents and teachers. The following suggestions can help ensure kids enjoy a safe and fun Halloween this year. Costumes Expect some restrictions on children’s costumes. Schools may request costumes be modest and age-appropriate. Some schools forbid certain costume props, such as swords or guns. For safety purposes, school personnel will want to see children’s faces. Therefore, the school may request face paint rather than a mask that obscures a child’s face. Schools may provide some Halloween instructions to ensure all students are in compliance and will not be left out. Food Schools, teachers and certain

classrooms may have specific food limitations to avoid allergy issues. Many kids have peanut, tree nut and/or dairy allergies, so when parents volunteer to send in food for classroom parties, they may have to verify that it does not contain nuts or dairy. Fresh fruits, crackers or allergen-free baked goods make for safe Halloween treats. Treats To be fair, if a student plans on handing out a treat or trinket to other classmates, they should first get permission from school staff. Again, allergies can come into play. If goodie bags are allowed, always confirm the number of children in class so that no one feels left out. In a classroom setting, teachers may follow an “all or nothing” philosophy. Unless a child has enough to give out to everyone, he or she may not be permitted to hand out treats.

at the front office, and long gone are the days that school doors are kept unlocked. Parents should be informed about how the school plans to handle security for Halloween events. Outdoor parades may be attended by the public, but classroom parties may be restricted to class parents or one or two volunteers. Adults should bring identification and be expected to wear a visitor tag. Students may not be allowed to leave early without prior notification and may need to be signed out through the office when they leave. Confirm any plans with school administrators.

School insurance plans typically cover only active students. As a result, younger siblings may not be allowed to come to classroom parties. Many schools schedule Halloween fun for their students, and this fun may include parties, parades or Safety Schools today need to be extra dili- assemblies. Those who follow the rules can make Halloween events gent in their safety protocol. Visitors usually have to be announced run more smoothly.

also can be used to rejuvenate dry or tired skin from cold weather. Honey, pumpkin and yogurt can be mixed together and used to condition hair. Let the mixture sit for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash it out and shampoo. Foods and beverages Pumpkin purée is the basis for many tasty, pumpkin-infused treats. Purée can be used in pies, cakes, muffins, breads, and many additional foods. Pumpkin purée also may be found in certain beverages, such as smoothies and shakes. A bit of spiced purée may appear as flavoring in teas and coffees. Roasted pumpkin seeds make a healthy treat. Foodies suggest using the seeds from “sugar pumpkins” or the ones best for making pies. Boil the seeds for a few minutes before draining. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray and put the seeds in a single layer. Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes. Allow to cool and serve. Pumpkin wines and beers are popular as well. There are many recipes for developing sweet, fermented beverages, which tend to be especially popular in the fall. The “guts” of the pumpkin can be simmered along with aromatics and other vegetables to create a vegetable stock perfect for soups and broths.

Few items signal the fall harvest season more than the bright, orange pumpkins that dot fields and liven up displays outside of homes and businesses. Come fall, many pumpkins are turned into grinning jack-olanterns just in time for Halloween. But there are many other uses for pumpkins as well. Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Early Native Americans relied on pumpkins as a source of food that helped them survive long winters. Pumpkins could be roasted, baked, boiled, and dried, and they were eaten and used as

medicine. Pumpkin blossoms were added to stews. The shells of the pumpkins could be dried and used as eating and storage vessels. While pumpkins may now be symbolic of Halloween, the following are a handful of additional ways this versatile fruit can be put to use. Beauty regimen Pumpkins contain a number of essential vitamins and minerals that can help replenish the skin. Pumpkin purée can be mixed with honey, aloe vera gel, olive oil, and a bit of cornmeal to create an exfoliating mask for the face or body. Pumpkin

Decorations Pumpkins can also add to one’s home décor during the fall. Pumpkins can be carved for Halloween displays, hollowedout to hold tealights or simply left on tables and used as centerpieces. Larger pumpkins may be used as natural flower pots for mums or other seasonal floral displays. As the Native Americans once did, pumpkins can be hollowed-out and used as bowls to serve favorite soups and dips. Use a hollowed, small pumpkin as a natural aromatic candle holder. Cut holes in the sides to vent the exhaust. Rub aromatic spices, such as cloves, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, and vanilla bean, on the inside of the pumpkin. Insert a beeswax candle in the bottom of the pumpkin and let it send inviting aromas into the air. Pumpkins are a versatile fruit that can serve many purposes beyond just jack-olanterns and pies.

307-682-5106 A National Fire Prevention Association study reported that, on average, seven Americans die in a residential home fire each week. Though you never know when fire might strike, there are important measures you can take to increase your chances when seconds count. While it’s nearly impossible to make a house completely fireproof, you can build or remodel it using fire-inhibiting materials. The better ones will help to withstand fire hazards, and they may also give you those extra precious minutes or seconds to escape in the event of a fire. When considering a home renovation, be sure to do your research for fire-rated and noncombustible products. The Roxul brand, for example, produces stone wool insulation. This insulation resists temperatures up to approximately 2,150 F, and when directly exposed to fire, this chemically-inert material will not produce harmful gases or promote the spread of flames. Industry experts explain that stone wool insulation is designed to delay the spread of fire from room to room, providing valuable evacuation time that is critical to saving people, pets, property and reducing environmental damages. Helpful fire safety tips are available online at nfpa.org. You can also brush up on your fire safety knowledge by visiting the Roxul website for a chance to win $2,500 towards extra precious moments with your loved ones.

Sweet Teeth and Home Renovations

Page 31

By: Kevin Bennett

It was a beautiful dream home in an ideal neighborhood. Well, maybe not ideal. Sure, the community was on the back end of its former glory, and most of those who had moved in when they were young had aged with their properties. But the house was just gorgeous. It had several split-levels and a wonderful patio opening on the backyard. Sure, it was cold in winter and hot in summer, and the floors buckled and creaked— but what a great home to start a family in! At least, that’s what Renee thought when she and her new husband moved in twenty years ago. Yeah, the draftiness of the upper levels had been fixed, and a new heater kept things warm in winter, and the kids—Jimmy and Lane, eighteen and nineteen respectively—were off at college again, so there weren’t any teenagers creeping around at night and breaking lawn ornaments anymore…but for some reason, that beautiful dream home Renee remembered just didn’t have the luster it once did. So Renee dove into a few books on her feelings. A general nostalgia and melancholy had made her listless, and Gary—that was her husband—had begun to notice. That’s when the idea of renovation floated through her conscious like a cloud of inspiration on a breeze of time. Sure, Gary and her had fixed problems over the years—when the basement flooded in ’08; what an ordeal that was!—but they’d never really sat down and put any deep thought into home improvement. It was the wooden flooring in the hallway between the kitchen and the living room that did it. She’d gone out to feed a sweet tooth at three in the morning and hit that one board that always groaned when anybody walked on it. As was the board’s custom, a nasty creek echoed through the house and startled the dog into a barking fit that gave Renee such a start she banged her head against the door-frame and commenced to explaining at length, and in no uncertain expletives, her lack of appreciation for the dog and the door-frame. And that’s when it hit her: it had been twenty years since they’d purchased the home as newlyweds, but there had been no true renovation whatsoever! Forgetting for the moment the sweets in the kitchen, Renee stormed back to the master bedroom and woke Gary, who’d managed somehow to sleep through the whole thing, with this

great new idea that had just come to her at three in the morning. Gary had been less than impressed, but Renee knew she’d be able to get him to agree for wont of sleep, so chattered at him till he was willing to give her the keys to the kingdom with a bow on top, and finally let him pass out. The morning after he had been more sober in his thinking, and inclined to a certain irritation. But when Renee showed him the research she’d done on flooring in Gillette, he gradually came around.

Gary hadn’t known about Carpet Express. Like many in Gillette, he’d simply assumed for any kind of renovation amenities the thing to do would be travel down I-90 to Rapid City and hope not to get snookered in a bum deal. But as it turned out, Carpet Express Direct of Gillette had the closest to wholesale pricing in the entire northeastern quarter of Wyoming. And they didn’t deal only in carpets, either. LVP, Linoleum, Tile, Carpet, Wood, Concrete—there were even some elastic options for workout rooms, gymnasiums and that kind of thing. There were a great variety of specials available, too; like Camelot Roleans 849 Sheet Vinyl at only $2.66/square foot. The Camelot had an elegant, wooden look to it, but the convenience of modernity behind its installation and manufacture. And Carpet Express Direct turned out to be a purveyor of installation as well; what a time-saver that was! Renee had a thousand different ideas for each room of the house, and prattled on continuously with a bandage around her head where the doorframe had inspired her. Certainly her ambitions were too high; but Gary realized with Carpet Express, they weren’t beyond reach. So he and Renee put some time aside and made a trip down to 1211 South Douglas Highway where the store was located to look at their displays. Gary isn’t the only one who’s saved time, money, peace of mind and sleep through Carpet Express Direct of Gillette. With regular discounts, a wide selection, and professional experience, you too can renovate your home in a way that invigorates life itself, and save in the process. That’s Carpet Express Direct!

Put them on display in clear glass or plastic canisters so they add to your Halloween décor. Some people like to get creative with Halloween cuisine, crafting foods into items that may look like parts of the body or other symbols of the holiday. Cookie cutters can turn sandwiches, desserts, biscuits, and many other foods into different shapes. However, foods also can be made a tad more spooky simply by renaming them or presenting them in interesting containers. Why not serve punch out of a fish aquarium? Other beverages can be housed in jugs or old bottles and labeled “potions.” Use laboratory instruments, such as petri dishes, vials and beakers, to serve snacks. A Halloween party makes for a fun night, and there is no limit to what hosts can do when planning their scary soirées.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam, Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home; A charm from the sky seems to hallow us there, Which, seek through the world, is ne'er met with elsewhere. Home, home, sweet, sweet home! There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home! An exile from home, splendor dazzles in vain; Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again! The birds singing gayly, that come at my call -Give me them -- and the peace of mind, dearer than all! Home, home, sweet, sweet home! There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home! I gaze on the moon as I tread the drear wild, And feel that my mother now thinks of her child, As she looks on that moon from our own cottage door Thro' the woodbine, whose fragrance shall cheer me no more. Home, home, sweet, sweet home! There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home! How sweet 'tis to sit 'neath a fond father's smile, And the caress of a mother to soothe and beguile! Let others delight mid new pleasures to roam, But give me, oh, give me, the pleasures of home. Home, home, sweet, sweet home! There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home! To thee I'll return, overburdened with care; The heart's dearest solace will smile on me there; No more from that cottage again will I roam; Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home. Fine Italian Cuisine for the Whole Family by Kevin Bennett Armando knows good food. A Gillette local who has been in the business for the last fourteen years, Armando owns and operates I. Siciliani Italian Restaurant, which can be found at 2700 South Douglas Highway. The fine folks running I. Siciliani come from a studied background in the culinary industry. Los Compadres is also one of Armando’s local restaurants, and one of the reasons he was able to take a trip across the Atlantic and into the deeply historic climes of Italy, where Armando says: “I just fell in love with the culture and the food, and I wanted to bring that to Gillette.” And any Gillette local knows that culture is in definite need! So the idea

behind I. Siciliani has been to bring some of that great Italian cuisine to the local scene from the very beginning; but in a “friendly dining atmosphere,” as Armando says; which is really integral to enjoying

any kind of food. Furthermore, since I Siciliani has been open about nine months, it has had some time to develop regular, daily specials; as well as a happy hour from 3 pm to 7 pm throughout the week. During happy hour, appetizers, wines and beers can be had at special discount prices. I. Siciliani seeks to meet the needs of many customers by having regular, consistent hours of operation as well. They are open from 11 am to 9:30 pm daily. And to top it all off, the restaurant is family-owned and operated. Says Armando, “We are very excited to bring something new to Gillette.” I. Siciliani doesn’t stop their fine service behind the doors of the establishment, either. The culinary adventurer can expect a full service bar, and for those events where a private nature is the requirement, catering services are also available from I. Siciliani.

HAPPY HOUR: 3-7 PM EVERY DAY!

MONDAYS: $7.95 Pizza Night

Gillette has been growing culturally for the last decade in ways many local residents could never have expected; and this is just one more entry into the city’s ever-widening dining options. Bring the whole family by for fine food and great service!

HOW TO STORE FRESH APPLES varieties. Choose apples that are free of blemishes or soft spots. The adage that “one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch” bears some truth. Apples give off ethylene gas as they decay, and a rotting apple can quickly affect nearby apples. A good place to store apples in the short-term is in the refrigerator where it is cool. Put the apples in the crisper drawer. Do not store them with vegetables, as the apples may cause the veggies to ripen or rot prematurely. If you plan on long-term storage, a few extra steps are necessary. Apples need to be individually wrapped so they will not come in contact with other apples. Newsprint works great; just be sure to pick the pages that are done in black ink because colored ink may contain heavy metals.

A Few Tricks Of The Trade Can Be Employed To Prevent Apples From Decaying.

Once wrapped, place each apple in a container padded with more newspaper. Store this container in a cool place, such as a garage, root cellar or screened-in porch. Apples can last a couple of months if stored in this manner. Keep apples away from potatoes, as potatoes can cause the fruit to prematurely decay.

Another way to store apples is to turn them into preserves or apple sauce. Matthew 6:9-15 New International Version

This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ‘ For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
