Tips For Getting Your Yard Ready For Winter As quickly as autumn weather arrives it seems to move aside for the blustery, cold days of winter. Winter can catch a person off guard and the seasons are now less predictable than ever before. It’s never too early to begin preparing your yard and outdoor living spaces for winter. Homeowners may be sad to bid farewell to the furniture and accessories of the fairweather season, but time is of the essence when prepping for impending ice and snow. * Clean patio furniture. Give cushions and structures a thorough cleaning and allow to dry completely. Cleaning items before storing them for the winter saves time and energy next year when it’s time once again to set up the yard for recreation. If anything is damaged beyond repair, discard it and look for replacements during end-of-season sales when savings can be had. * Move things indoors. The more items you can store in a safe and secure location the better. Load the garage, basement or storage shed with outdoor gear. Leaving items exposes them to the elements, and such exposure can cause rust, wear and damage. Flower pots and lawn ornaments also can blow around in winter wind or collapse under the weight of the snow, so collect these items and store them for the winter. Take out patio umbrellas and put them in the shed. If something is too large to move indoors, such as a barbecue or a pool filter, cover it

with a durable tarp and secure it with rope. * Cover delicate trees. Depending on where you live, certain fruit trees, including fig trees, may need to be covered for the winter. Covering protects them from subfreezing temperatures and helps ensure they will rebound in the spring. Tropical plants should be moved indoors where they can thrive in a heated home. Do not rip out chrysanthemum plants. Contrary to popular belief, these are not annuals. They will rebloom year after year if allowed to do so. * Remove water collectors. Bring in or cover anything that may accumulate water, such as bird baths or kids’ toys. Water expands when frozen, and that means water trapped in any ceramic, glass or even plastic vessel can expand and cause the container to crack. * Clean up leaves and debris. Piles of leaves not only can suffocate a lawn and cause discoloration, but also can be attractive homes for rodents and insects looking for a warm place to spend their winters. Keep your yard neat and clean to discourage wildlife from taking up residence near your home. * Cover vegetable and flower beds. Invest in some burlap to lay down over planting beds. This helps to keep the ground from freezing over and minimize weeds for next season. * Care for outdoor ponds. If you have a pond on your property, remove any weeds around it and fish out any leaves from

the water. Leaves will decay in the water and build up ammonia levels that can harm fish. If the pond is small, cover it for the winter. Also, start cutting back on feeding outdoor fish. These aquatic animals’ bodies begin to prepare for winter by slowing down metabolism. Continuing to feed them can harm the fish when the temperature drops. * Wrap up pool season. It’s wise to close the pool and cover it before leaves start to drop. Otherwise you will have a hard time of keeping the water clean. * Plant spring bulbs now. Now is a good time to plan where you want to put spring bulbs. Once you have mapped things out, get the bulbs in the ground. Bulbs are relatively inexpensive and will provide that first punch of color when winter finally skips town.

Sweet Sweet Candy History

Halloween is as much about candy as it is about dressing up in fun costumes and engaging in scare tactics. Humans have loved their sweets for centuries. Early human beings made candy out of honey by drying it and forming a taffy-like confection, while many modern incarnations of candy involve dissolving sugar into water or milk to form a syrup. Candy is then made by varying the temperature of the syrup and the sugar concentration to achieve desired textures. The word “candy” is derived from the Arabic “quandi,” meaning “made of sugar.” Candy also often refers to chocolate bars and other treats that people find so delectable. Ancient Mayans and Aztecs were the first to experiment with the cocoa bean, the cornerstone of chocolate confections, in the 1500s. However, their chocolate drinks were bitter and not the sweet delights we’ve come to associate with chocolate. It wasn’t until the 19th century that innovators began mixing cocoa with sugar to create chocolate bars. Joseph Fry is credited with making the first chocolate bar in 1847,

using bittersweet chocolate. Milk chocolate came later, in 1875, when it was introduced by Henry Nestlé and Daniel Peter. Milton Hershey began producing sweet chocolate

in 1894. Hershey bars, Nestlé bars and many other original candies are still in production today. Tootsie Rolls and Charleston Chews are other classic candies still produced. Good & Plenty debuted in 1893, making it the oldest branded candy

in America. NECCO company Wafers were officially branded in 1901 and are another classic treat consumers can still find in the candy aisle of their nearest grocery store. Smarties is another candy that’s bound to show up in trick-or-treat bags this Halloween. Smarties have been owned and operated by the same family since 1949. The Ce De Candy Inc. factory opened up in August 1949 in Bloomfield, NJ, and produced a candy that would not melt in the heat. Smarties are a favorite all over North America and elsewhere. When demand is too high for the NJ factory, particularly around Halloween, Smarties are also produced in a Canadian factory in Newmarket, Ontario. Smarties imported to the United States are still called Smarties. However, Smarties sold in Canada are known as “Rockets,” as another candy sold in Canada already bears the Smarties name. Halloween wouldn’t be nearly as sweet without troves of candy treasures. Children are urged to have their candy sorted and inspected by parents prior to eating to avoid any dangers, such as food allergies or tampering.

Falling Leaves: A Beautiful Safety Hazard after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle. Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time.

Autumn and driving seem to be tailor-made for one another, and they can be if motorists exercise caution when driving near fallen leaves. Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful displays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country. While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Understanding certain inconveniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves. Staining Leaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint. It’s important to manually pick leaves off of the car’s surface right

Leaves that fall can become trapped in air intake vents, eventually impeding flow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the windshield wipers should be removed. Use a highpowered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting.

Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe. Slippery surfaces The Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the surface of roadways can be hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off-ramps more carefully. Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fill potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing damage to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them. Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

Well ladies and gentlemen is the boom coming? Is it already here? The market has continued to appreciate in all areas. Residentially we have continued to see house price go up. Currently we are about 6% above last year’s average sales price. Residential sales have shown sharp increases in 2 areas, total volume and the average sales price. You can see our average sales price is up over $12,000 vs this time last year. The market has steadily increased throughout the first half of the year. We are down in the total number of new listings and with the law of supply and demand as inventory drops prices will increase and demand rises. Interest rates have remained steady hovering right around 4.25%. The average sales price is UP for the third quarter in a row, albeit slightly, which is a good sign. You can also see the percent of sales price to list price is also up, it meaning sellers are getting closer to the list price but still have to be a bit negotiable. We still see it a very common practice for seller’s to pay a portion or all of the buyer’s closing costs as part of the purchase price. The commercial market has seen a large increase in the number of sales. This would also

include industrial buildings which is a good sign and typical for a boom in our area. The days on market has decreased and it’s mainly due to some buildings selling quickly as the market gets better. One area of particular interest is the rental market. The current vacancy rate is 1.3% (yes 1 out of 100 apartments being available). As it has picked up it will drive homes sales as rental rates begin to raise and the public realizing it may be cheaper to buy then rent! Obviously From the data and numbers, the Gillette market is healthy and appears as if it will continue to grow and move in a positive direction. With the increase in oil production and if coal will stabilize, Gillette could be in for a very nice finish to 2014 for the overall Real Estate Market.

Did You Know?

Some children amass quite a pile of candy from their trick-or-treating efforts. It may be too much to eat in the next few weeks, even for candy lovers. According to “Better Homes and Gardens,” many different types of candies can be frozen to preserve their freshness. Fudge, pralines and caramels freeze well, and even chocolate-covered candies can be frozen with ease. Use an airtight freezer bag or container to keep frozen candies as fresh as possible and not susceptible to moisture infiltration.

Taken from the Christmas version, “Grinch Punch,” This is the best tasting holiday punch that I have tried so far, and I think it would work great for halloween. Frothy with hints of lemon and vanilla Ice cream, and taking just 20 Minutes to make, this will be the frothy punch that can satisfy a crowd.

Pint Size Pinata How easy to make, cutting up and sewing together strips of colorful felt around a T-shirt and some sweat pants, and then making the hat from house hold items like the paper cups in this example. It looks like this costume would be easy for a young child to move around in, as well as durable and warm. Not to mention how original and cute it is! It works inside and out, as your little pinata will likely be stuffing themselves with candy. Adorable! pinterest.com/pin/147563325264177731/

FIRE SAFETY By: Kevin Bennett

It’s been a wet year, but that doesn’t mean Wyoming didn’t experience fire damage. While it’s difficult to predict when a fire will happen—and sometimes there is no way to prevent one—there are a number of tips which will definitely help prevent them. To review the list in greater detail, check out FEMA’s website. First and foremost, all homes should have at least a single working smoke alarm. If your home didn’t come with one, they’re easy enough to pick up at any hardware store. Discount stores are also a good place to pick up a smoke alarm. Don’t overload circuits or extension cords. Especially in a pre-fab unit, a sparking circuit can send your house into flaming destruction. Use Appliances Wisely: if it smells weird or starts smoking, unplug it and either get it fixed or get rid of it. Alternate heaters are good to have in case one begins to malfunction. If you use a fire-pit, keep the fire in there and don’t allow any horseplay. Install a home fire sprinkler: these are affordable and lower insurance rates. Have an escape plan ready in case all else fails! Keep an eye on your kids. Naturally, sparking, sputtering, bright things are going to be interesting to a child. So don’t give them the opportunity to play cowboys and arsonists. These are just a few tips to help keep you safe in your own home this winter. In Wyoming it gets cold, and we need our heat. But with some thoughtful preparation, the dangers of a fire slowly whisk away.

Counter Top Choices, What’s Right for YOU?

A homeowner’s choice of countertop surface material can go a long way toward defining the personality of his or her kitchen, so homeowners should consider their options before making a final decision.

affordable. Made of sheeting glued to plywood or particleboard substrate, laminate countertops are water-resistant but not very heat-resistant, so homeowners will want to place any hots pans, pots or baking sheets on trivets to maintain the laminate. Many homeowners prefer laminate countertops because they are available in so many colors, meaning they can match any homeowner’s preferences, no matter how colorful those preferences are. Cutting on laminate countertops is not recommended, but such surfaces are easy to clean and maintain. Quartz

ens. Thanks to their unique shading and tone, granite countertops are never the same from one home to the next, and granite complements many different cabinet colors. Granite also is resistant to heat, scarring and, when sealed properly, stains. Granite is naturally porous, so if it is not sealed properly, it can harbor bacteria. Some granite countertops must be sealed annually, while some pretreated countertops can go as long as 15 years without a need for resealing. Unlike other countertop surface materials, granite, which is among the most expensive countertop materials, does not come in a vast array of colors, so homeowners should expect to choose from just 20 or so color options. Recycled glass

Many things in a kitchen contribute to giving this popular room its personality. Appliances and choice of cabinets go a long way toward crafting that look, but perhaps nothing defines a kitchen more than a homeowner’s choice of countertops. Countertops are where the action takes place in a kitchen. It’s where meals are prepared and where hungry houseguests or curious kids watch the family chef whip up the night’s meal. The options with regard to countertop surfaces are numerous, and the following are just a few of the more popular options homeowners planning to replace their existing surfaces might want to consider.

Quartz is among the most durable countertop surfaces available, as it is resistant to bacteria, heat, stains, and water. Though quartz is not available in as many shades as laminate, it is similarly easy to clean. Also like laminate countertops, quartz surfaces tend to have easily visible seams, which may irk homeowners who find such minor imperfections an eyesore. Quartz countertops can be expensive depending on the amount of surface area a kitchen has, so budget-conscious homeowners with especially large kitchens may find quartz countertops bust their budgets. Granite

Homeowners who want to give their kitchens a modern and eco-friendly feel may want to consider recycled glass countertops. Recycled glass countertops, the majority of which are now produced with 80 to 90 percent postconsumer glass, are made of pieces of glass that are held together with cement binders. Some might be concerned that countertops made of recycled glass are not very strong, but the cement binders are very hard, making the countertops durable, strong and unlikely to chip or crack. Recycled glass countertops come in various colors and are resistant to both heat and stains. Installation of recycled glass countertops can be tricky, as improper installation can lead to stress points that make the glass susceptible to cracking. As a result, the installation of recycled glass countertops is best left to professionals with experience on such projects. Recycled glass countertops can be quite expensive as well. Did You Know Communication Plastic bottles are routinely recycled into other plastic items and new bottles, but they can be turned into much more. When you were sipping water from that bottle, you probably never thought of the possibilities of wearing that very plastic. However, fabric innovators are turning disposed plastic into durable garments. When compared with producing virgin materials, recycling plastic products helps save up to 70 percent on energy costs. Recycled bottles can be broken down into pellets of pure recycled plastic that is virtually indistinguishable from virgin plastic. Then the pellets are turned into yarn, which can be woven as-is or mixed with other yarns to produce polyester clothing. According to Waste 2 Wear, a recycled clothing company, anywhere from 12 to 20 bottles can be saved per garment and transformed into anything from robes to shirts to uniforms. Recycled clothing presents yet another way to turn trash into treasure.

Shelter Dogs Need Homes Too!

October

Beagles are the perfect size for many families, and they also make friendly and peaceful dogs. Then why do they end up in shelters so readily? Beagles were developed as hunting dogs and may have these traits programmed into their heads to chase and seek out prey. What’s more, beagles need a lot of exercise, and some people simply do not have the time or inclination to exercise their dogs.

Thousands of dogs end up in shelPit Bull Terrier Mixes ters every year. Some get reunited with family members, but the vast majority are strays or surrendered by their owners. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that animal shelters care for between six and eight million dogs and cats every year, and approximately half of those animals are ultimately euthanized. Substantial progress has been made to reduce the number of shelter animals that are euthanized, but more work is necessary to save animals from this unfortunate fate. To help reduce the number of homeless animals, many different shelters work to place animals in homes and educate men, women and children about pet overpopulation. Certain breeds tend to be more populous than others in shelters.

A well-bred pit bull can be a dependable, loyal and good-natured companion. These dogs are athletic and must have moderate daily exercise to stay healthy and prevent boredom. Pit bulls can be stubborn and dominant, meaning they will need confident owners who can establish and enforce expected behaviors. While they can be friendly with people, pit bulls may be assertive around other It is possible to find purebred dogs dogs, particularly when they feel in shelters, and some shelters even their dominance is being challenged. specialize at placing particular In addition, these dogs have a high breeds. However, many shelter dogs prey instinct and may chase cats or are mixed-breeds, often referred to other small animals. as mutts. According to polling from Pit bulls can usually live comfortably various shelters across the country, pit if they have adequate mental stimulabulls, Labradors, German shepherds, tion and are socialized at an early age. beagles, and their mixes tend to be the most common types of dogs found in Beagle Mixes/Small hunting dogs shelters. Dogs perceived to be too hyper or aggressive frequently arrive at shelters when people find they cannot manage the animals. But with some training and discipline, many dogs can become beloved companions. The following is a look at the general temperament of common shelter dogs and the type of care and handling such dogs may require.

Beagles can bay or howl when they become bored, and they may dig holes or try to escape close quarters. For these reasons, beagles may end up turned over to shelters. But firm training and positive outlets for energy can help make beagles welcome companions. Shepherd Mixes

German shepherds are often selfconfident and aloof but not hostile. But many German shepherds, thanks in part to overbreeding, exhibit unpredictable behavior. This is why a mixed German shepherd can make a great family dog,. German shepherds are a working breed and were developed to be smart and forward-thinking. Shepherds need mental stimulation to remain happy and could become destructive if not given a good intellectual outlet, such as agility classes or herding opportunities.

When a person is diagnosed with breast cancer, tests are then conducted to study the cancer cells. According to the National Cancer Institute, such tests are used to determine how quickly the cancer may grow and the likelihood that the cancer will spread throughout the body. These tests also may help doctors determine a course of treatment and if a patient is likely to experience a recurrence of the cancer down the road. One such test is the estrogen and progesterone receptor test, which measures the amount of estrogen and progesterone receptors in cancer tissue. The cancer may grow more quickly in patients who have more of these receptors than normal. In addition to measuring the amount of these hormones in the cancer tissue, an estrogen and progesterone test can determine if a treatment aimed at blocking estrogen and progesterone may prevent the cancer from growing.

Black Lights Enhance Halloween Décor

Creating a spooky atmosphere when decorating for Halloween is the ultimate goal. People will go to great lengths to establish film-worthy special effects and ghoulish details. Using black lights when decorating can cast an ominous glow and establish the desired atmosphere. Black lights are a common fixture at amusement parks, museums and also Halloween displays. The bulbs look just like any other fluorescent or incandescent bulbs, but they are dark in color. When turned on, the lights will give off a purplish hue. In addition to this violet shade, the black light also is producing ultraviolet light, which cannot be seen by the naked eye. Black lights that produce UV-A light are used to observe fluorescence, or the colored glow many substances emit when exposed to UV light. Black lights can detect specialized stamps at amusement parks that are invisible unless viewed under UV light. Law enforcement may use black lights to detect traces of blood, urine and other genetic material at a crime scene. Scientists may study minerals or sea life under black lights to witness their fluorescence. Other black lights that do not have as dark a filter coating on the bulbs are used in insect bug zappers. What a person sees glowing under a black light are called phosphors. A phosphor is any substance that emits visible light in response to some sort of radiation. A phosphor converts the energy in the UV radiation from a black light into visible light. Phosphors are used in specialized black light posters and inks. Phosphors also are

found in laundry detergents to help white clothing glow even brighter, which is why a white T-shirt or socks will glow unusually bright under black lights. It can be interesting to experiment with black lights when decorating for Halloween. Some Halloween items are designed specifically to glow under UV light. Encourage party participants to wear white clothing or accessories or specialized phosphor-containing stamps so they will glow under black lights. Note that black lights emit very little UV radiation. Therefore, they’re safe to view with the naked eye and will not cause the kind of damage to the skin often associated with UV exposure. Many natural and man-made items contain phosphors. These can be interesting to include in black light decorating. The following are items that contain phosphors: · teeth · fingernails · television screens · petroleum jelly · laundered white clothing · fluorescent markers and highlighters · fluorescent paints · glow-in-the dark toys · minerals · fish · phosphor inks Black lights can illuminate anything that glows to create eerie or entertaining environments for Halloween decor.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Tips To Get Your Home Ready For Cooler Weather

Autumn is a beautiful time of year marked by welcoming cooler temperatures and the natural beauty of leaves changing colors. Autumn also has a tendency to fly by, as if the powerful weather of winter simply cannot wait to make its presence felt. With such a seemingly short time between the end of summer and the dawn of winter, homeowners know they don’t have too many weekends in between to prepare their homes for the potentially harsh months ahead. But such preparation, often referred to as “winterizing,” can make a home more comfortable when the mercury dips below freezing, while saving homeowners substantial amounts of money along the way. * Clean the gutters. Leaves falling in fall can be a beautiful sight to behold, but many of those leaves are likely finding their way into your gutters, where they can lodge and cause a host of problems down the road. If the leaves and additional debris, such as twigs and dirt, that pile up in your gutters are not cleared out before the first winter storm, the results can be costly and even catastrophic. Winter rain and snowfall needs a place to go upon hitting your roof, and gutters facilitate the travel of such precipitation from your roof into street-level drainage systems. If gutters are backed up with leaves and other debris, then ice dams may form, forcing water to seep in through the roof. That damage can be costly and can even cause the roof to collapse inward in areas with heavy snowfall. Clean gutters throughout the fall, especially if your property has

many trees, and be sure to check gutters one last time before the arrival of winter. * Tend to your attic. Homeowners who have attics in their homes might want to add some extra insulation up there, especially those who recall feeling cold inside their homes last winter, which is often a telltale sign of improper insulation in a home. A good rule of thumb when determining if your attic needs more insulation is to look for the ceiling joists. If you can see the joists, then you need more insulation. * Address leaky windows and doors. Sometimes attic insulation is not the culprit when it comes to a cold home. Oftentimes, leaky windows and doors are the real bad guys in a drafty home. Fall is a great time to inspect for leaky windows and doors, as the wind outside can serve as your partner. When the wind outside is blowing, take a tour of your home’s windows and doorways, standing next to them to determine if there any holes or leaks that are letting outdoor air inside. If you notice any leaks beneath exterior doors, install some door sweeps to keep outdoor air where it belongs. Leaks around windows can be snuffed out with caulk or weather stripping. * Test the furnace. Homeowners typically do not devote much thought to their furnaces in spring, summer and fall. But with winter on the horizon, fall is the time to test the furnace to make sure it’s ready

for the months ahead. Expect a somewhat foul yet brief odor to appear when starting the furnace. That odor should dissipate shortly, but if it does not go away, then your furnace is likely in need of repair. But even if the smell does not stick around, you might want to have the furnace cleaned by a professional anyway. Such cleanings ensure the furnace works efficiently throughout the winter. * Clean the garage. You might not mind parking in the driveway during the warmer months of the year, but why subject your vehicles to harsh winter weather if you don’t have to? Clean the garage in the fall so you have an indoor parking spot throughout the winter season. Protecting your car from the elements can add years to its life and also saves you the trouble of digging your car out of the snow. Fall is a time of year for homeowners to spend a weekend or two preparing their homes for the often harsh weather that awaits when winter arrives.

Squirrels Set Up Residence in Attic

Q: While putting some stuff in the attic, I heard some scratching and squeaking sounds. I know we don’t have mice in the • Frugal house, but I couldn’t see any nests or fur unfashio around the attic. Sitting outside the next how-to i day though, I saw a squirrel climb under for turn the eaves and disappear. Do you think I treasure. have a squirrel infestation? How do I get how to rid of them? -- Wigged Out in Washington A: You may very well have a squirrel infestation. Like other rodents, squirrels can damage insulation and electrical wiring, so getting rid of them is a priority. Take a closer look at your home’s eaves and soffits to find out all the points of entry. It’s likely that some small damage occurred underneath the eaves, and the squirrels exploited it. They will still be using this new “front door” they created. Head back into the attic and hunt for nests or other signs of squirrels. Nests often are built using insulation -sometimes in the insulation -- along the outer edges of the attic. Also, locate the entry point and other points of entry and mark them with chalk or tape. Block up all entry points except one. From this point, you have a choice to make: Do you want to trap and release the squirrels, or do you want to kill them? If it’s the latter, you can place poison bait for rodents (including squirrels) near entry points and nests, or use kill traps. If that’s not your thing, purchase a live trap with a one-way door. Set it in the attic at the one remaining entry point. Do this at midday, when the squirrels are more likely to be out looking for food. If you’re not sure that they’re outside, set a live trap near the nesting spot, with a little bait inside (like peanut butter). Once trapped, take the squirrel(s) to a new area, away from other houses but not too far from their original roaming area. Once done, block the remaining entry point and then repair all damaged areas. Additionally, have an electrician go over the attic wiring to make sure it hasn’t been damaged.

How To Show Your Appreciation To Members Of The Military This Article Was Proudly Sponsored By:

Civilians who join the military find their lives change forever upon entering the service. The armed forces shape a person, teaching discipline, humility, bravery, and many other life lessons. Joining the military often means making substantial personal sacrifices, as servicemen and women are typically called away from their families and the comforts of home. Many grateful men and women want to show their appreciation to those who risk their lives to defend their country, but they may not always know how. The following are a number of ways you can show your appreciation to members of the military. * Thank a service member. If you see a person in uniform, thank them for their service to the country. Use the person’s title if you can identify rank, or simply use the respectful terms of “sir or madam.” Though a simple gesture, a verbal token of gratitude can go a long way toward brightening a soldier’s day. * Volunteer with a veteran’s association. Volunteering is another way to show veterans and active service members how much you appreciate the sacrifices they have made. Volunteer at a veteran’s hospital or help to organize an event that’s commemorating the efforts of local veterans and active service members. * Propose an event to honor local service members. Petition a town council for a special parade to honor your community’s military personnel, including veterans and active duty members. * Raise funds. Fundraisers are another way to show military members how much you appreciate their service. Collect money for a military-based scholar-

ship, asking a local high school or university to establish the scholarship in the name of a local veteran or active duty service member. * Provide a forum in which a serviceman or servicewoman can share his or her story. Soldiers can offer unique insight on issues that affect civilians, and the community can benefit from servicemen and women who share their stories. When hosting a community event, ask a soldier to be a keynote speaker. * Send gifts to active military. Make care packages or write cards and thank you notes to stationed troops. Organizations like the USO, Military-Missions.org or AnySoldier.com can ensure your packages make their way into the hands of soldiers. * Help an active duty service member’s family. Spouses of active duty military personnel often must handle all of the chores that come with managing a household on their own. To show how much you appreciate a service mem-

ber’s efforts, offer to lend a hand around his or her house. This can make life easier on a service man or woman’s spouse, and your companionship may provide a world of good. You can even go the extra mile by organizing a military spouse appreciation night at a nearby church or recreation hall. Offer free babysitting and provide refreshments and entertainment. * Publicly display your patriotism. Active duty service members and veterans joined the military to defend our way of life, and you can show pride for your country and appreciation for their efforts by hanging a flag outside of your home. * Pick up the tab. Surprise a person in uniform by paying for his or her meal at a restaurant. It’s a simple gesture, but it shows how much you appreciate that service member’s sacrifice. Gestures that show military personnel how much you appreciate them need not be lavish. Any and all expressions of gratitude can make a world of difference.
