GUTTERS! Every autumn, trees and shrubs take on their brilliant display of reds, oranges, purples, and yellows that mark the end of the growing season. Fall foliage may make for ideal photo backdrops and scenic days in the countryside, but closer to home leaves may be more of a hindrance than an aesthetic pleasure. The hundreds of leaves that adorn the maples, oaks and other trees near homes will eventually fall as autumn turns into winter. Some will float down to lawns, while others will get lodged in gutters and downspouts, posing problems that can cause substantial and potentially costly problems for homeowners. Homeowners know that gutter cleaning is an important part of fall home maintenance, but they may not completely understand why. Gutter cleaning can be a messy and time-consuming project, making it a project many homeowners are apt to put off. Waiting to clean gutters can lead to considerable problems, so it’s best to tackle the job well in advance of the winter. Gutters guide rainwater and runoff from the roof so it drains properly away from homes. When gutters are clogged with leaves, a number of problems can occur.

And Here’s Why... also makes interior spaces more appealing to pests. • Excess weight: Gutters are meant to hold the weight of traveling water and not much more. Gutters filled with leaves and other debris can quickly become heavy. This stresses the entire gutter system and can cause the gutters to fall off of the home entirely.

Blocked water can back up and push against the roof, lifting shingles and destroying the roof in the process.

• Foundation trouble: Clogged gutters also may contribute to flooded basements and cracked foundations. Leaking water will pool around the foundation, expanding when frozen and causing cracks in basement and crawlspace walls. It also can cause driveways and • Nesting areas: Clogged gutters can serve other cement areas around the home to sag and crack. as nesting areas for insects and birds. Gutter cleaning should be scheduled Mosquitoes and other insects lay eggs in pooling water. Gutters can quickly become in the spring and fall of each year. Homeowners can hire gutter-cleaning breeding spots for harmful pests. Further• Leaks: Water will take the path of least services to handle the job or do the job more, birds may nest in gutters, creating resistance. When clogged gutters do not unsightly messes and more damage. Seeds themselves. will be attending the same school as you. Carpool with friends during the first week of school so your first steps on campus are with friends.

Entering Freshmen Can Take Several Steps To Make Their Transition To High School Easier: Each school year brings new opportunities. Although attending a new school can involve some butterflies as kids acclimate to their new classmates and teachers, the transition from grade school to high school is typically one of the more dramatic transitions students have to make.

Although starting high school can be an overwhelming experience full of change, there are many ways for students to ease this transition. • Take part in high school orientation. Orientations help students acclimate to their new surroundings. Orientation sessions can provide insight on coursework and help kids learn about the campus and any amenities it provides. Learning

the layout of the school in advance can help calm any first-day jitters students may encounter. • Arrive prepared. Make sure all summer assignments are completed so you start off on the right foot. Unprepared students are likely to be apprehensive. • Adjust to new sleep-wake schedules. Summer vacation may have been filled with late nights and sleepy mornings, but now that school will begin anew, it’s time for students to gradually readjust their schedules. That will make it easier to wake up for school. Many high schools begin the day earlier than grammar schools and middle schools. It may take a few weeks to grow accustomed to the earlier hours, so start waking up earlier as the summer winds down. • Plan to arrive with friends. Seeing familiar faces can help students feel more secure. High schools tend to be larger than grade schools and include kids from various neighborhoods, but chances are your friends

• Enroll in a mentoring program. Some high schools pair freshmen with upperclassmen so younger students can learn the ropes of the school. New students can benefit from these personalized guides and should feel comfortable asking questions about teachers and school protocol. • Participate in clubs and extracurricular activities. Another way to feel more comfortable at a new school is to participate in activities. High schools offer numerous extracurricular activities that cater to an array of interests. Band, choir, sports teams, debate teams, student government, and foreign language clubs are just a few examples of enjoyable extracurricular activities. Joining such groups can introduce you to like-minded students. • Arrive to class on time. Teachers may be more lenient the first few weeks of school, but over time they will expect students to learn their schedules and arrive to class on time. Students can make arrangements with friends to share lockers or employ other strategies to make it easier to get to class on time.

Tile, linoleum, laminate, sheet vinyl, carpet—there are so many flooring options out there! What works the best? The fact is, everybody has a reason they prefer one kind over another. Sure, hardwood flooring is elegant and practical, but it costs more than linoleum, so Spendthrift Jerry swears by the inexpensive option. Meanwhile, Moneybags Milton has a different kind of floor in every room of his house, and only uses linoleum for the feline’s special sandbox quarters in the dungeon of his hillside multimillion dollar mansion. Then there’s Regular Rosco. Now Rosco has a name used on pets, but somehow despite this he’s managed to land a pretty lucrative position with a legal firm in town, and he’s looking for a permanent option that stands the test of time, but is also a worthwhile investment.

Sometimes when you pay more for a service, you get more worth from that service. Everyone has had this experience with a mechanic. You go to the cheap guy with the missing teeth and the squirrelly eye, for some reason you end up having to go back every couple of months. But you go to the reputable mechanic, they fix your radiator one time and it works well for ten years. Sure, you paid twice as much; but in the end you saved money because you didn’t have to continuously fix the same problem. Flooring can be very similar, and one thing Rosco found is that many people have valid reasons for preferring hardwood options. First and foremost, it’s easy to install. For the experienced installation experts, the process is very straightforward. Hardwood also has an exceptionally high-quality appearance, and this can be had with a variety of woods available for flooring. There are higher and lower end options, but either direction brings an elegant look to a room with hardwood. Also, hardwood flooring is very easy to clean. Dirt dust and debris, the three ter-

rible d’s of flooring, aren’t regularly accumulated in the hardwood realms. So if, for example, you’ve got kids on the way, you’ll never have to worry about keeping them in the attic for ten hours while the carpet gets shampooed. You’ll never have cat hair get caught in the fibers of the shag, and skin/dust/pollen particles won’t accumulate over time like the funky junk in a fish tank filter. Furthermore, hardwood floors are very strong and durable. They can take some damage and not be defeated. Hardwood flooring is usually much more durable than tile, where a dropped item can crack or splinter it. You might dent the wood, but it won’t get broken. Hardwood flooring can also add value to a property. The aforementioned elegance is easily communicated, so over time the floor could pay for itself in property appreciation. There is a certain agelessness about hardwood floors which, when properly maintained, will continue through multiple homeowners. About the only real downside to hardwood flooring is water damage. Water can make the wood buckle and expand, if it is allowed to seep into the floor and be absorbed. But you’re going to have water damage contingencies with any flooring option. Linoleum is slapped onto cement with an adhesive that loses its stick when water gets in the mix. Carpets get moldy and funky underneath and can become toxic. So this isn’t really a big disadvantage on the hardwood front, just a precaution. At Carpet Express Direct of Gillette, the closest thing to wholesale in north east Wyoming, there are not only flooring options from every category, there are a variety of superior hardwood options. Oak is an elegant favorite that comes in many colors, and there is a varied selection geared to fit individual tastes; from Moneybags Milton to Regular Rosco, and everybody in between. Christmas lights aren’t just for Christmas these days. I see them hanging along the eaves of back porches and decorating the landscape to light up garden parties at dusk. Here’s a great idea for a hanging lantern, using lights I picked up at my local thrift shop: I basically piled strings of lights in the sections of a three-tier wire hanging basket, connected them together and plugged them in. They look magical. – JoAnn

WAYS TO PREP YOUR HOME FOR WINTER

Trimming Hanging Branches A nd Remov ing Debris Fro m Their Ya rds Is One Simple Wa y Homeow ners Can P repare Their Prop erties For Winter.

guests upon lighting your first fire.

3. Clear the yard

As winter approaches, homeowners know they must do certain things to ready their homes for the coming months. Wrapping up the grill and closing the pool are no-brainers, but homeowners also must prioritize winterizing their homes to ensure homes withstand the winter.

Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.

Winterizing tasks range from small to big, but each can protect a home and its inhabitants and some can even save homeowners a substantial amount of money. The following are four simple ways to winterize your home.

windows and door frames for leaks, as well as any additional openings, such as chimneys, that may allow cold air in. Use caulk or weather strips to plug these leaks, and enjoy your warmer home and lower energy bills as winter weather gets colder and colder.

1. Plug leaks

2. Inspect your chimney

Leaky windows and doorways can cost homeowners money year-round, allowing cold air to escape on hot summer afternoons and letting cold air in on brisk winter nights. When such leaks aren’t fixed, homeowners are more liable to turn up their air conditioners or heaters, unnecessarily padding their energy bills along the way. Before winter arrives, check areas around

If your home has a chimney, chances are you have not used it since last winter. During that time, the chimney has likely accumulated some dirt and grime, and may even have served as home to some uninvited critters. As the season for fireside chats approaches, have your chimney serviced by a professional so it’s ready for use and you are not greeted by some unwanted

4. Turn off outdoor water supplies

When temperatures get especially low, pipes with water still in them can freeze and burst, potentially leading to significant water damage. When you no longer need to water the lawn and when temperatures get too cold to wash your car in the driveway, be sure to shut off the water supply to outdoor spigots and sprinkler systems. Once you do that, drain them so no water is sitting in the pipes when temperatures dip. There are many ways to winterize a home, and homeowners should take every precaution necessary to ensure their homes are safe and warm as the cold weather season approaches.

Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep

According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day.

Flip through this magazine to see for yourself! (Adoption Page 45 Listed on Cover.)

But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. Cats make wonderful pets. Independent, loving, clean, and intelligent, adopting a new cat can be a great way to make a new friend. Not to mention, cats are usually pretty good at removing unwanted critters from in and around your home such as insects, mice, and snakes. Those looking for a cat may not have to look far. The ASPCA says approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and roughly 3.4 million of those are cats. An area shelter is an ideal place to find a new pet for those thinking of getting their first cat or adding to the pets already in the household. Cats, can be purchased from pet stores, but they also may be available via friends or family members who have recently welcomed a new litter. Before bringing your cat home, it is best to make sure you and members of your household are prepared to welcome a furry feline friend into your home. • Find the right match in a cat. Temperament can play a role in how well a cat fits in with your family. A cat that is fearful and skittish may not be the best match for a family with young, active children. Until your new buddy is used to the house, and knows he will be fed and is safe there, don’t let him escape out the door, or into crevices like wall spaces or the dryer vent. Keeping your cat confined for the first few days will give him a chance to get to know his territory and acclimate. Make sure he knows where his box is, and where his food is. Don’t let your cat outside for a while. He has to know his home well before he can be trusted to roam and come back. If you do let him become an indoor outdoor cat, at the very least write your phone number with a sharpie on a cat friendly break away collar, so that he can be returned to you if someone picks him up.

• Bananas: Much like almonds, ba-

nanas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanksgiving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep.

FIND FALL TEXTILES A little splash of fall color in your home helps set the mood for cozy Autumn afternoons.

ACCENT WITH BURLAP

HANG A WREATH SImple, elegant, and beautiful. Winter isn’t the only season for wreath making!

BAKE UP SOME WARM COMFORT FOODS For example, here is an AMAZING apple cider pumpkin cake: Mix boxed yellow cake mix and pumpkin puree into a large bowl. Uing a mixer, beat well. The batter will be very thick. Pour into greased 7x11 pan. This is a small, rectangular-sized pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 28 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. For the glaze: Combine 1-1/2 cups powdered sugar, 3 Tbsp apple cider and 3/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice. Glaze should be thick but pourable. Add more sugar or cider if needed. Pour over the cake while still warm. Reserve some to pour over each slice when served. Yum!

Burlap is THE fabric for fall this season. A hearty earthy material, that says “shabby chic” and adds a rustic but creative feel to any home. We love these burlap acorns, but the possibilities are pretty much endless!

STOVETOP POTPOURRI

DONT FORGET OUTSIDE It’s easy and rewarding to add a few fall themed accents outside of your home. It gives a welcoming and warm feel!

This is a fun way to add some scents to your home with very little effort. Great for a party of get - together. Just use: 1 whole orange or just the peel, 1/2 cup cranberries, 1 Tbsp. whole cloves, 3 sticks of cinnamon, a bit of grated nutmeg if desired. Quarter the orange. Put all the ingredients into a saucepan. Fill pan with water. Place on the stove on the smallest burner, on the lowest setting to fill your home with autumn aromas. Reheat throughout the day, adding water when it starts to look dry, and then toss out mixture when done.

Bees don’t only produce honey. They also produce a pollen byproduct that can be collected from the bottom of a hive. You can buy this byproduct of honey production at local health food stores and grocery stores, but usually if its purchased from off the shelf, it won’t be as good for you. Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep

Continued From Page 19

According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day.

• Cheese and crackers: One more traditional snack may just help you get a better night’s sleep. Cheese and crackers contain tryptophan and carbohydrates, which can induce a better night’s sleep and help you fall asleep sooner.

But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. For example, certain snack foods may help to improve quality of sleep, especially when these foods replace less healthy snacking options. • Hummus: The primary ingredient

in hummus is chickpeas, which are loaded with tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6. Folate has proven especially beneficial to older men and women who need help regulating their sleep patterns, while vitamin B6 helps the body regulate its clock.

• Almonds: Magnesium is a mineral

with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier.

• Peanut butter: Peanut butter is

another snacking item loaded with tryptophan. Spread some peanut butter on a carbohydrate, whether it’s a slice of toast or some crackers, before going to bed, and you may enjoy a better, longer sleep.

• Bananas: Much like almonds, ba-

Best Home Improvement Projects for Fall HouseHunterWY.com

September

Fall Is An Ideal Time Of Year To Tackle Home Painting Projects. Home improvement projects can add value to a home and do-it-yourselfers know the sweat-equity that goes into such projects can give homeowners a greater sense of pride in their homes. But no two home improvement projects are the same, and homeowners should know that certain projects are best tackled during certain times of the year. Fall is a great season to work on your house, as the weather is often at its most agreeable once the summer heat has gone and before winter weather arrives. The following are a handful of fall-friendly home improvement projects for homeowners looking to improve their homes.

Roof repair

Whether you’re repairing or replacing the roof, fall is a great time of year to dust off the ladder and get some work done on your roof for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, fall is ideal for roof work because you won’t have to be up on the roof with the summer heat bearing down on you. This can make the project move along more quickly, which is especially beneficial if you are paying laborers to work on the roof. The fewer hours workers are fixing your roof, the less you will be paying in labor costs. In addition, fixing up the roof in the fall ensures those winter storms, be it rain or snow, won’t find their way into your home via leaks. A leaky roof in winter is hard to fix, as the roof surface could be treacherous in the winter and winter winds can make it dangerous to be up on the roof at all. Addressing leaks in the fall can prevent damage to your home’s interior, which can mount up if a leaky roof is not addressed until the following spring.

Window work

When the weather outside gets frightful, poorly insulated windows can allow cold air into the home. That often has a trickle-down effect on finances, forcing you to turn up the thermostat in an attempt to offset the cold air pouring into the home. Whether you need your windows replaced or simply need to patch up any leaks, a proactive approach to leaky or older windows in the fall can save you from unnecessarily high heating bills come the winter. Addressing leaky windows also makes a home more comfortable for its inhabitants. Fall is the ideal time to address a home’s windows because the temperature outside tends to

be pleasant. This means you likely won’t have to make much of an effort to offset the elements, and open windows in the fall won’t make your home’s interior very hot or cold like they might if you were to tackle the project during the summer or winter.

Painting projects

Painting is another home improvement project that seems tailor-made for fall. A fresh coat of paint or a new color scheme around the house can give a home an entirely new look and feel. But paint can be pungent and the aromas may last if it’s applied at a time of year when it can’t dry while the windows are wide open. Paint Wood flooring is a hot commodity for many fumes inside a home can make the home uninhomeowners. Thinking of recycling in financial terms may make some people more apt to recycle, especially when it comes to aluminum cans. According to “Dirty Metals,” a research publication produced by Oxfam America, Inc., more than 50 million aluminum cans are tossed into the trash rather than recycled each year. That scrap metal is estimated to be valued at $750 million. Many stores have bottle- and can-deposit collection centers that provide a cash return for returned cans. Recycling scrap metal also helps reduce the production of new cans, which has a trickle-down effect on consumers. Reducing costs associated with mining for aluminum and new can production helps keep costs down in the long run.

H o w To F i n d M o re Time For Family

Working parents tend to have hectic schedules, and those responsibilities often impede on the time moms and dads get to spend with their families. Many parents strive to make more time for their families, and doing so can prove a greater reward than any promotions or bonuses earned at the office. For those parents whose efforts to achieve better work-life balances remain works in progress, the following are a few ways to free up more time for those people who matter the most to you. • Stop working. Once you leave the office for the day, resist the temptation to pick up your smartphone and check your email or listen to your voicemail messages. Smartphones have made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office. But many working professionals feel this convenience has a significant downside, making them feel as if they are working round-theclock, even during moments that were initially earmarked as family time. Working parents who want to make the most of the time they have with their children should ignore their smartphones during dinner or the time they spend hanging out with their kids or helping them do their homework. You can always sneak a peek at your emails when the kids go to bed. • Shake things up. If your list

of responsibilities is truly taking time away from your family, don’t be afraid to shake up your routine. For example, instead of cooking dinner alone, involve the kids so you can get some extra time in with them. If you like to go on a nightly jog around the neighborhood, let the kids accompany you on their bicycles so you can still get your exercise without having to sacrifice time spent with your children.

• Propose changes at work. Work is one of the biggest consumers of parents’ time. Parents who feel their work schedules are inefficient or in need of some change should try to think of ways to approach those inefficiencies so they aren’t having such adverse effects on family time. Business travel was once a reality of life for many working professionals, but nowadays technology, such as video conference calls, can let working moms and dads stay closer to home without sacrificing their productivity. Before bringing any issues to your boss, think of realistic ways to institute change so you and your coworkers can get more time with your families without falling short of company goals. • Move closer to the office. Though this might be a drastic change, moving closer to the office might free up more time for parents to spend with their families than any other po-

Page 31

tential change they can make. According to data from the United States Census Bureau, more than 8 percent of workers have a commute to work of 60 minutes or more. The Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey also found that nearly 24 percent of workers worked outside their county of residence, which no doubt contributed to the nearly 26-minute average commute time to work. Parents who feel their commutes are greatly diminishing the time they get to spend with their families may want to consider moving closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families. Many parents are determined to spend more time with their families, and those willing to make a few adjustments can find that goal is not as difficult as it seems.

Easy Ways To Start Looking Younger Now

Page 35

placed highlights can add dimension to hair and take years off of your look as well. Some hairstylists also advise women wear bangs to appear more youthful. Bangs and a well-shaped cut can hide a large forehead or some wrinkles.

Gain a little weight

Many young people, and adolescents in particular, desire to look older. But those desires often shift as men and women reach middle age, at which time looking younger becomes a priority. When wrinkles crop up or laugh lines appear, people are quick to run out and find methods to wipe away the years. Fortunately for adults, there are plenty of ways to create more youthful looks when Father Time starts catching up.

Makeup When done correctly, various makeup techniques can take years off of a woman's appearance. Using a foundation color that matches your skin is key. Wearing a shade that is too light can wash you out, and one that is too dark can drag down features. As a person ages, the lips can lose color and definition. Wear a shade of lipstick that makes the lips appear more plump and dewy. A shade

of pink similar to your natural lip shade can achieve this. Pink shades in general will add to the youthful tone of younger skin and are relatively flattering on most skin tones.

Cosmetic fillers Cosmetic fillers can help create a plumper appearance in the cheeks and face, and such an appearance is frequently associated with youth. These injections have been successful for many women. Women considering cosmetic fillers should exercise caution and do their research. Women should always work with a board-certified dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon who has experience performing the procedures they prefer.

Revamp your hair Hair that falls just below the shoulders can be flattering on women with various face shapes. Well-

As a woman ages, she may lose weight in her face. As a result, women who are naturally thin may look more gaunt as the years go by. Gaining just a few healthy pounds can help round out your face and help you appear healthier and younger.

Teeth whitening The years can be particularly tough on a person's smile. Foods and beverages can stain enamel over time and contribute to yellowing of the teeth. Investing in an at-home whitening kit or visiting the dentist for a professional whitening session can make teeth look less worn down.

Moisturize Skin can lose moisture and elasticity as one ages. You may be quick to apply moisturizer to your face, but don't neglect your neck and hands, as such areas often show age. There are various ways that women can give themselves more youthful looks, and many o f those ways do not require much time or money.

them clean up if need be. Supplies and other items kids need should be easily accessible in the homework room so kids are not wasting time looking for items they need to complete their homework.

Classrooms conducive to learning may go a long way toward helping students understand the subjects they study in school, but the environment kids encounter at home also plays a big role in how well kids do in their studies. A homework-friendly atmosphere at home can facilitate learning, and there are many ways parents can create such an environment for their schoolaged children. • Designate a homework zone in a distraction-free area of your home. Some youngsters are easily distracted, and those distractions come in many forms. A living room where the television is blaring, a noisy kitchen where dinner is being prepared and a room where pets can roam free are not ideal homework areas, as each can take kids’ attention away from their assignments. Designate a room in your home that is quiet and well lit so kids can do their homework free from distraction. • Choose the right location for the homework room. When choosing an area of your home where kids will do their homework, avoid

rooms adjacent to the kitchen and living room, as these rooms tend to be popular and subject to heavy foot traffic. But don’t choose a room that’s too far away from the hustle and bustle, such as the basement, as that may make kids feel as though they are being punished. In addition, you want to be able to periodically check in on kids to see if they need help and make sure they aren’t spending their homework time surfing the Internet or procrastinating. • Keep the homework room clean. A cluttered homework room may be less appealing to children, and such disorganization also can distract kids from the tasks at hand. Encourage kids to keep their homework rooms clean, and help

• Let kids rest or relax before starting their homework. Another element of a good homework atmosphere is letting kids unwind between getting home from school and cracking open the books. A break between school and homework time can help kids focus better on their studies. In the interim between arriving home from school and starting on their homework, give kids a healthy snack that can provide an extra jolt of energy they can use once they start their homework. • Evaluate how the homework zone is working. Once an ample amount of time has passed, examine how kids are performing on their homework assignments. If they are doing well, then there is no reason to break up the current routine. If they are struggling, ask them if there is anything about the current setup they dislike and address those issues accordingly. Kids rarely look forward to doing their homework. But the right atmosphere can make homework seem like less of a chore and more of an opportunity for kids to apply themselves.

Upscale Home Décor With Crown Molding

Create a dramatic new look throughout your home or highlight one area with crown molding — the key to an upscale look for walls, windows, doors, cabinets and more. Homeowners will find the tools and supplies necessary for crown molding projects at Woodcraft.

miter saw — either the General Tools EZ Pro Crown King Crown Molding Jig or the Kreg Crown-Pro Miter Saw Guide that features a bonus measurement transfer angle finder. If your project involves a coped cut, Woodcraft stocks Eclipse Coping Saws and Gröz Coping Saw Frames.

Although crown molding is generally identified as trim for the area where a wall meets the ceiling, molding is used for many other home décor applications. Molding creates an appealing visual element when used at chair height along a wall, sometimes with thin vertical pieces attached to accent a wider area. Molding also serves as an attractive window cornice or as a frame for a wall-hung flat screen television or vertical mirror. The possibilities are only limited by homeowners’ imaginations and finances.

“Remember to protect your eyes,” product manager Jessica Douglas said. “Pick up a pair of SAS Safety Glasses before you begin your project. The lightweight glasses can be worn alone or over eyeglasses.” For all the marking and measuring necessary to prepare the molding, you will find the multipurpose Kreg Multi-Mark Marking Gauge indispensable. To fill any small gaps, Woodcraft recommends Famowood Wood Filler, along with Norton 5X Small Area Sanding Sponges for smoothing filled holes.

“Crown molding is an inexpensive approach to adding beautiful detail to your home,” Woodcraft national power tool sales manager Andrew Bondi said, “and Woodcraft is the go-to source for tools and supplies for molding and trim projects.” Bondi speaks from experience, having recently installed crown molding throughout his house.

Once the molding is cut and ready for fastening, use the Grex 18-gauge Green Buddy Nailer, which offers precision control and both sequential and contact trigger applications.

Before lifting the first piece of molding, homeowners will want to do some research about molding and installation techniques and tips. “Cutting and Installing Crown Molding,” a DVD by Jim Heavey, and “Crown Molding & Trim: Install It Like a Pro!,” a book by Wayne Drake, are good resources. A miter saw, like DeWalt’s 10" SingleBevel Miter Saw, is essential for cutting crown molding joints. To make the process easier, Woodcraft recommends using a cutting jig with the

Glue for molding and trim is a great product to use,” said Woodcraft senior product manager Peter Collins, “especially if you are going to use a headless pinner to install trim.” Painting crown molding can be simple — blending in with the wall or ceiling color — or new color can be introduced to match furnishings or accent the overall décor. “General Finishes Milk Paint and Old Fashioned Milk Paint, both water-based, are available in many colors and can be mixed to create an extensive palette of custom colors,” product manager Kent Harpool said. “Both brands also offer related products to produce special decorative effects, such as antiquing and distressing.” Harpool recommends Redtree Bristle Brushes or Foam Brushes for applying paint. Use Microfiber Tack Cloths to remove sanding dust before applying paint or after distressing. To learn more about these and other products, visit your local Woodcraft store, call (800) 535-4482 or visit www.woodcraft.com.

Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. • Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. • Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the

sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter.

• Stuffing: Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow. • Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further

rake and compost the leaves.

• Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations. • Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of “hide and seek.”

Always be filled with joy in the Lord. I will say it again. Be filled with joy. Let everyone see that you are gentle and kind. The Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds. Brothers and sisters, continue to think about what is good and worthy of praise. Think about what is true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected. And do what you learned and received from me—what I told you and what you saw me do. And the God who gives peace will be with you.
