Violeta & Pavel
A Decade of Love
Having to adapt their wedding to the pandemic didn’t stop this DIY-loving dancing queen and her king from having the time of their lives. As Violeta gives us the rundown of her and Pavel’s special day, GWD can’t help but bust a move to the sound of this wedding.
“After ten years together, we got married on the 21 August 2021 at Marischal College. Loving the look of the Grant Room, it was an easy choice. The reception venue was a bit more of a challenge to find. We knew we wanted a summer wedding, but the place of our DIY dreams wasn’t available until after autumn.
Thankfully, we secured a privately-owned barn in Aberdeenshire, which suited our rustic celebration perfectly! Planning in a pandemic was frustrating, though, with rules changing so often. A lot of things had to be last minute - not ideal for us mega planners, but we knew we just had to accept and adapt. The worst thing was that Pavel’s parents in Latvia couldn’t fly to the wedding. We were heartbroken but knowing that we’d celebrate with them soon helped. The wedding day was, compared to the planning, very stress-free! After saying ‘I do’ we had a photoshoot with Old Aberdeen as our backdrop then arrived as newlyweds to greet our guests at the reception. We had a lovely two-course meal then, of course, some cake! We treated everyone to an open bar and made sure there was plenty of extra food to soak up the booze! Having lots of DIY décor was really important to us. I created our signs and menus and worked my floral magic on the bouquets and buttonholes.
Most of the accessories that made the venue personal to us were found around the house or second-hand. Guests loved the polaroid camera, sticking photos in our handmade guestbook, plus taking some home as a keepsake. Dancing was also a huge part of our wedding so, of course, we had an amazing dancefloor! Set up with lights, a sound system and even a smoke machine, it really got the party started. After all, dancing the night away had been long-awaited and with restrictions lifted, we were definitely ready to boogie freely! Planning a wedding during Covid-19 taught us the importance of having and accepting a plan B. Even though so many unexpected things happened during the planning stage, there are still no words to describe how incredibly well everything worked out. It was even better than we could have wished for…”
