Mums' Shopping for Mum
Whether your MOB and MOG are channelling their inner Victoria Beckham or going ultra-traditional, make sure to fill them in on just how to find that showstopping outfit…
Effortlessly elegant without blending into the background, it’s safe to say we’re absolutely in love with the slightly cheeky yet totally classic Studio 54-inspired slip VB wore for her son’s wedding – MOG goals to the max! Whilst most mothers-of-the-bride or -groom don’t have a luxury womenswear empire on their hands, or a little black book bursting with the hottest contacts in fashion, it might take a little more work to pull together such a wow-worthy outfit – but it will certainly be worth it.
Looking for and finding ‘The One’ should be a fun experience so start the search in plenty of time to avoid any last-minute panics or pressures. The northeast is peppered with a wonderful selection of womenswear boutiques so make a weekend or two of it and tour the region, factoring in plenty of stops for cake and fizz!

Start the shopping experience armed with a bit of research. First, you’ll want to be clued up on the wedding theme, style and season (Is it formal or informal? Summer or winter? Hollywood glam or relaxed rustic?) as well as what others are wearing. Whilst your outfit is all about you, it’s worth making sure you don’t clash with the bridesmaids and other mother-of-the-bride/groom. Next, think about what you want. Flip through magazines, scour designers' websites and look at photos of friends’ children’s weddings to explore the colours, shapes and styles available. None the wiser? Not a problem! It’s great to go shopping with an open mind, and to be able to trust the boutique experts to source an outfit that not just looks good on you but feels great, too.

Visit as many stores as you need to but remember that most are by appointment only and weekends book up fast! You’ll find that collections are there well-ahead of the season – spring/summer designs arrive at the beginning of the year and autumn/winter outfits hit the shops at the start of summer. Some boutiques only carry one or two styles per size so get in quick for the widest choice!
You’ll want to bring one or two trusted advisors – the bride is usually a good bet – because as much as those in-store can guide you, there’s real value in also having someone who knows you and can be honest when needed. Beware of too big an entourage, though. It can cause confusion and ultimately how you feel about each outfit will be the best guide as to what’s right and what’s not.
Found something that makes you feel like Victoria Beckham strutting down a catwalk? Great! But your job’s not done – time to source the accessories to match. If you’re going for headgear, small and quirky is popular this season – but there’s nothing like a showstopping hat! You’ll also want to look at shoes, a handbag and jewellery – all of which the northeast’s occasionwear boutiques will happily assist with. ♥
