Ceremonies Official Officiants…
Unlike some of the ceremonies you’ll be used to seeing on the big screen, getting a friend to officiate isn’t as easy as it looks! In America, luckily anyone can be ordained and conduct a legally binding service. But unfortunately, in the UK that isn’t so. As such, we thought we’d help you out with a handy a list of people who can legally conduct your ceremony – and our top tips on how you can still get your friends involved!
Registrars and celebrants
If you’re opting for a non-denominational wedding, then registrars are called upon to conduct these. And these wonderful civil ceremonies take place in licensed venues, such as the northeast’s stunning stately homes and handsome hotels. It’s worth noting that these people are highly trained and experts at what they do. So, it’s not possible for someone to just adopt this position in the UK. It’s a full-time role and anyone wishing to get involved would have to apply at their local council or undergo years of training... Not a decision to be made lightly! In Scotland, there’s also the option of having a humanist celebrant carry out the service and for years this has been increasingly popular with to-beweds. Couples seem to love having the opportunity to work closely with their celebrant to personalise their entire ceremony. Plus, it opens up your venue options because you can literally marry anywhere you like. In this case, Scotland’s your oyster!
Clergy members
If you’re planning a religious service then all priests, rabbis, vicars, and other members of the clergy can carry out the ceremony for you. Did you know that non-ordained religious leaders (otherwise known as members of the Laity; a category nuns fall into!) can also do the job? But if you choose to go down this route, do note that a member of the registrar will have to be there to officiate.
Friends and family
As post-pandemic weddings focus more on the personal touch and really incorporating your nearest and dearest, an increasing number of couples are keen to have a friend or family member managing the nuptials… And there is a way to achieve that! Simply have a registrar or celebrant conduct the legal part then ship your loved one in to perform any non-legally binding parts of the service. Alternatively, opt for a celebration of your love on your chosen date and then do the legal part before or after that day! ♥
