EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to our very first issue! While the year is still young, a lot has happened. Reckon somethin’ which the whole world wasn’t ready for and still most of us can’t fathom…a pandemic. By any other name, Covid -19 with the many deaths, would still be as bad. But here we are…Alive! Being all indoors soaking in places we didn’t really spend time on, can really be a tad too much though. Not many folks spend time in their houses, locked in just for leisure… so Staying Home, may not have brought the right vibe to so many people. But we have to…right? For the sake of the vulnerable amongst us. How can we then transform these houses into homes? Bring life maybe? Thought about it and it was there all along! Bring nature home! How elegantly fulfilling right? We can change the world just where we are. Yes, we can make small steps towards making the world a better place for us and those around us by just going green. Planting trees, flowers and edible plants that improve on our health. We can’t forget the benefits of plants around us now, can we? The fresh air, the purity, the serenity, the peace… I am a positive believer in change. Plants. The use of sultry houseplants and succulents that transform any space (an office, or hotel room) into a heavenly abode. And with that, we introduce pots that accentuate your style. All in the comfort of your homely space! Transform everywhere you dine, work and rest into a home with flowers and pots! Yours Truly, EIC,

Terracotta, ceramic and concrete pots House of Nash was formed in 2019 as a sister branch to Nash Designs, a home and interior dÊcor company. We added Flowers and Pots so as to meet our clients’ needs as well as appreciate the beauty of mother nature. We dedicate to provide our clients with indoor plants and flowers as well as ceramic and terracotta/clay pots. We also specialize in gardening and landscaping services where we pride in providing the best potting materials for your plants. Our materials generally offer more visually appealing options in terms of color and design. They provide inadequate drainage for all species of plants. We drill
Hanging Baskets holes in the base to ease water drainage and prevent our pots from breakage and chipping easily.
At HON, we pride in satisfying our clients with nature essentials and always feel satisfied when they come back for more. This not only freshens up the air, but also eliminates harmful toxins.
We also offer attractive and portable hanging baskets(with plants) and powder coat them inside for long term rust prevention and to make them attractive.
The baskets are available in a wide variety of materials including coconut fibre, synthetic, wrought iron, coated wire and metal that come with natural liners often made out of coconut fibre. Page | 6

The Indoor Nature-plants “The generation that destroys the environment is not the generation that pays the price. That is the problem.” Wangari Maathai. There’s something about the environment that screams love. Whether it’s the purification of the air or the peaceful felling you get when you are surrounded by plants, I just don’t know. We just celebrated Earth day and boy, wasn’t the environment breathing again! Everyone’s at home and Mother Nature is breathing. There are more fish in the seas and oceans, mountain peaks can now be seen from a far off distances. The environment is back to norm. how lovely if we all participated in this though. From the comfort of our homes and contribute to the beauty of it all. I love gardening. Not only is it therapeutic but it’s one of those hobbies and activities that improve your life generally. Studies have proven that indoor plants improve concentration and productivity (by up to 15 percent!), reduce stress levels and boost your mood ; making them perfect for not just your home but your work space, too. Houseplants are good for your health — and not just for their visual beauty. Why? They essentially do the opposite of what we do when we breathe: release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. which in simple terms, plants help in the purification of air.

Motherin-law’s tongue Kshs. 300/-

Mother-in-law's tongue There are a few indoor plants that can be found locally and can be termed as the `easy children to take care of`. The Mother-in-law's tongue is easy to raise as it’s tough to kill. "Those can go for a month without water," says Nejman. The leaves are typically tall, stiff, and vertical, earning it the other nickname "snake plant." Mother-in-law's tongue is an easy care plant. The root ball needs to stay a bit damp and in the rainy, cold days, a bit dryer. ... Because of its succulent leaves, the Motherin-law's tongue can cope well with dry air. Give the plant enough light, it can even cope with full sun. On the side of underwatering or watering only when the soil is dry to the touch. Constantly watering this plant will rot the roots and eventually kill it. Watering once a month is best. It's far easier to bring a dry plant back to life than an overwatered one.
Chinese Ever Green (Aglaonema Plant) The long, narrow leaves can reach up to two feet long, and the plants themselves typically grow one to three feet tall and equally as wide. The plant is equally low-care when it comes to water; you can water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist, or water once every few weeks and Chinese evergreen will do equally well. To make a Chinese Evergreen plant look full and bushy, cut off the top half of some of the tall stems. Your plant should start sending out new growth fairly quickly. The leaves of a Chinese Evergreen plant turn yellow when the plant is not getting enough water and also turn yellow when it is getting too much water. It is an ideal office plant, bringing some visual interest and air filtering qualities to a space even with no natural light at all. This plant will happily live its life in the shade with its only source of light being artificial light.

Philodendron Philodendrons are one of the easiest houseplants you can possibly grow. Whether you choose upright or trailing/climbing types, they are perfectly happy in a home setting. Even beginner gardeners are usually successful at growing these plants. Philodendrons are very low maintenance and can sit idle for long periods. You can train them up a trellis or simply leave them to their own devices; philodendrons will survive no matter what.

Schefflera species are wonderful tropical plants. The larger schefflera (sometimes called the umbrella plant) features long, shiny, oval green leaves that droop gracefully from a central stalk resembling an umbrella. This evergreen shrub, also known as an umbrella tree, can grow 15 feet outside. "If you don't give it much care, it's going to grow slowly," says Walker. Like many plants, it can be mildly toxic.

This plant enjoys moist soil. Water it thoroughly, but ensure it's allowed to dry out between waterings, and never let it sit in wet soil as this will result in root rot, usually killing the plant. A well-draining soil is recommended for this plant to allow excess water to drain downwards and out of the bottom of the pot.

AT HOME WITH SUCCULENTS Succulent plants, also known as succulents, are plants with parts that are thickened, fleshy and engorged, usually to retain water in arid climates or soil conditions. The word succulent comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning 'juice', or 'sap'.
How should I water the succulent leaves or babies I’m propagating? This is the one time–and the only time–that it’s okay to use a spray bottlefor watering your succulents–when you’re propagating! In fact, if you’re propagating succulent leaves indoors, you can water them every day.

The jade plant is an extremely popular succulent houseplant with fleshy, oval-shaped leaves. Sometimes called the money plant or dollar plant, these plants were once thought to bring good luck to their owners so were often given as housewarming gifts.

As already mentioned, these fascinating little plants do not require a lot of work. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, forms and colors are easy to grow. They're also drought tolerant so you won't have to fuss with them once established. Some (not all!) are cold-hardy. For indoor succulents, it is generally best if water doesn’t get on top of the leaves. If it sits on a leaf for too long it can cause rot. Use a small spout watering can (this one is fantastic) or a squeeze bottle (like the one in this super handy tool kit). This isn’t as much of an issue for outdoor succulents because there is more airflow and the water will dry out quicker.

When choosing planters, size and color really matters. We advocate that you just don’t go just for anything really. Take your time and know what really represents your mood. Choose bright colours to accentuate a room’s brightness in rooms that don’t have too much of naturally available light. Dark colors for rooms with too much lighting. Most people nowadays prefer the African touch. These ones are readily available from our stores and are a good thing because you can have them custom made for your needs.
Our pots are coloured/painted according to our clientts’ orders.

“These big African pots are best suitable for plants that hold a considerable amount of water. They come with a hole or two at the bottom that slowly sips down when filled with loam soil. Philodendrons will do best in these kind of pots as they prefer even moisture and does not like sitting in wet soils.

Remember how I mentioned succulents don’t like to sit in wet soil for very long? It’s very difficult for the soil to dry out completely if your pot doesn’t have a drainage hole. The hole in the bottom of the pot allows for excess water drainage and away from your succulent roots. It also provides another way for air to flow through the soil and help it dry out faster.
“Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, terra-cotta pots look great just about anywhere and their earthy color will enhance the beauty of almost any plant. Made of a porous clay rich in iron, terra cotta has the ability to “breathe,” which keeps potting soils cool and wicks excess moisture away from plant roots, keeping them healthy. The main problem with using terra cotta, is that it is relatively fragile (watch for hard frosts that can crack containers) and it can

dry out quite rapidly, especially in sunny locations.” Another important piece of this watering method is using a pot with a drainage hole.

Where to Keep Your Pots Well, pots can be placed literally anywhere with good lighting. From the entryway, living spaces, bedroom floors, verandahs, bathrooms, balconies to dining spaces.
Centerpieces You can place your adorable vase on your centerpiece also. It is the place where you serve hot tea tray and crispy snacks, so while choosing it for there be very smart. Bouncy balls are another colorful idea for children’s parties. How fun is this arrangement?
Living Spaces You can choose from any of the places of your living area like as long as theres enough lighting. You can simply decorate it with fresh flowers or if not possible to change the flowers again and again, then you can switch to artificial flowers.
Or maybe you just wanted to bring some style and class into your home. Whatever the case, you needed quick, easy, and budgetfriendly decoration ideas so you decided to hit up your local dollar store and get some vases (because what’s easier than a vase).
Bedrooms For bedrooms you can choose from stylish looking marble vases; elegant metal vases or earthen pot, they too will look charming in the ambiance. You can also keep the vase near or by the side of your bedside table. Bathrooms You can also go for glass vases or fully go for a traditional Afr ican crafted style vase that will give a charming glance to your ambiance.
Entry ways The first place where you can keep the vase is the entryway. It the place where your guest enters, so you can keep your beautiful vase with some fresh flowers in it. By keeping your adorable vase there, you can make the passer feel refresh. Page | 29

handling of your vases. For staters;
Prepare the vase for the flowers with clean warm water -about 100 degrees Fahrenheit -and floral preservative. Always make sure your vase never goes dry. For plucked flowers like roses, make sure all flower and foliage stems should be submerged. Wash a glass vase with a solution of nine parts water to one part bleach and rinse it completely. Then, carefully strip the leaves that will be below the waterline and the guard petals -- the outer petals of the rose, especially any that are browned or damaged -- away, along with any thorns.
NB; Always be gentle, as damaging the flower as you strip it creates a wound that will attract bacteria and fungi.
Watch your water.

Avoid exposure to too much rain
As this may cause breakages.
Clean daily with a wet piece of cloth
Do not remove foliage when leaves fall as this helps in ensuring the soil is rich with nutrients required by the growing plants.
