THE HOPE OF GLORY! Dearly beloved,

PAGE 4 - KINGDOM WISDOM

God in His infinite mercies has made it possible for you to read from us again, or if this is your first time of reading Praisereel, we are glad to welcome you on board! 2008 has left the starting blocks like an Olympic athlete (By the way it’s an Olympic year... and a leap year) Oh I believe for someone out there this is a year of victory. This is the year you have been waiting for, even if the past few weeks still have a semblance of last year, hold firm to your faith, never let go. God is always in control. The Bible told us that Jesus was in a boat with the disciples, while He was fast asleep, the disciples fought tooth and nail to save themselves and the boat from what they taught was fatal storms, until someone remembered to wake Jesus, who despite the activities around Him never woke, and when He woke, all he said was Peace be still... and the storms obeyed him.

PAGE 5 - COVER STORY

What storm has plagued you thus far... in this year of a new thing, I say Peace be still, step out of the storm and move into your next level. We thank those of you that have gotten in touch with us one way or the other, we appreciate your comments, contributions, suggestions and constructive criticisms, please keep it coming. Contact us at praisereel@houseofpraise.co.uk for any suggestions, contributions or enquiries. We look forward to hearing from you. Andrew Adeleke EDITOR IN CHIEF

It’s the Easter season, a holiday more important to the Christian faith than any other because without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, our faith is void, like the Apostle Paul said, therefore we decided to zero in on Easter issues. I have also tried to inspire you to get an upgrade in your life. I was once upgraded while travelling from Economy to first class; can you repeat such a scenario of unmerited favour in life and destiny? Pastor Yemi has dealt with relationship issues in her column and we have tried to answer questions from teenagers in our community. We look forward to answering your question too.

ARE YOU READY FOR AN UPGRADE? In Genesis 47:15-20, the people of Egypt and Canaan were in dire need, their money had finished, they had used it all to pay for food which had become very scarce. The Bible says, there came a time when all their money had finished and they went to Joseph and said, give us food or do you want us to die? Our money is used up. Joseph asked them to bring their livestock instead in exchange for food, and they brought him sheep, goat, cattle, donkey etc. However they soon ran out of these also, then they negotiated with their land and Joseph ended up acquiring all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh in exchange for food. This extraordinary story is the greatest evidence you need that God can prosper you regardless of societal economic conditions. The children of Israel and the Egyptians were under the same system; weather and government, but the difference was very clear. Genesis 47:27-28 said “Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number. Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.” The Egyptians ran out of money, meaning that money can fail; they became beggars mortgaging their life and properties, just to get the next meal. Joseph had the solution to their problem and hence acquired riches. I pray that God will give you the mystery that will upgrade you. Joseph, who came to Egypt as a prisoner now ended up buying the whole land. He was upgraded from a captive to a deliverer The Children of Egypt became slaves in their own land; Genesis 47:23-25 “Joseph said to the people, "Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children." "You have saved our lives," they said. "May we find favour in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh." They gave up their freedom without thinking twice, forgetting that this was a land

4

where they were born and bred. They became slaves. In contrast however, the children of Israel, through their affiliation to Joseph prospered in the land. The main reason why the children of Israel prospered was because of the covenant God has with Abraham, Genesis 15:18 “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates.” This covenant sustained the children of Israel in Egypt, and as a seed of Abraham yourself; this same covenant can sustain you today if you recognise it. Acts 3:25 says we are the children of the prophets and the covenants which God has made with our fathers. God has given you all the ingredients you need to succeed, he has given you the power to make wealth, and the wealth He gives is bereft of sorrow. Recognise it! You can make it in this same land. Remember the children of Israel prospered in Egypt whilst everyone around them sold their soul to live. God can give you a mystery that will buy you wealth like Joseph did with the whole of Egypt and Canaan. Connect with God today and recognise the covenant he has made with your father. God is ready to upgrade you. Are you ready for it?

THE GREATEST MAN THAT EVER LIVED... THE EASTER STORY

by Andrew Adeleke According to a BBC website, “Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most important Christian festival, and the one celebrated with the greatest joy”. The website went further to state that “The date of Easter changes each year, and several other Christian festivals fix their dates by reference to Easter.” However, despite this apt description of the single most important Christian festival, many people in today’s world especially in the west can only relate Easter with either the Easter Bunny (reportedly from a pagan origin)or the Easter egg. Outside the church, it appears the meaning of Easter is lost on several people. Help came from an unlikely source when Hollywood legend, Mel Gibson produced the blockbuster movie “Passion of the Christ”. He reportedly spent 12 years and $25million dollars on this movie that impacted the whole world. From California to London, Cinemas were filled with Christians and non-Christians who had gone to see this work of art that in most cases ended up making several sober at the end. Such was the graphic details and the quality of the production that the movie was an instant success. It was simply a movie describing the last moments of Jesus Christ on earth, details of His suffering and eventual death on the cross. Many people reportedly sought more knowledge about Jesus after watching this film. The scenes dramatised in the Passion of the Christ, represent part of the significance of Easter. The Movie described the period Jesus fulfilled His ministry on earth which is to suffer and die for the sins of the world so that whosoever believe in Him can be saved. His destiny while on earth is fulfilled in His death and resurrection. The Christian faith is centred on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ 2000 years ago in Israel. In fact, the name “Christian” means the followers of Christ; therefore

you cannot separate Christianity and Jesus Christ. Despite many attempts to discredit Him, the story of Jesus still points to the fact that this was the greatest man that ever lived. He was born of a virgin and at the tender age of 12 was teaching men who were overwhelmed by the wisdom that came out of his mouth. His real ministry which lasted for 3 years from the age of 30 has impacted the world up till today. The greatest significance of Easter is the fact that Jesus Christ is no longer in the grave. Easter is a celebration for all Christians, there were many prophets that came to the world at one time or the other in history, but they all died, and we know their grave, however, Jesus Christ’s grave is not known till today because he resurrected. What men fear most is death, but Jesus conquered death so that we can live with Him in eternity.

“Jesus Christ’s grave is still not known today because He resurrected” The story of Jesus is the greatest story ever told, and with all the evidence in the bible, without His death and resurrection (which Easter celebrates) humanity is doomed. He was born particularly for one purpose, to reconcile humanity to God. His death has brought us life and his resurrection is the proof that eternal life awaits all genuine followers of Jesus. Therefore, Easter is simply the most significant festival in Christendom as it represents the restoration of hope for man, and epitomises the victory of Jesus over death. Easter also represents restoration of hope, joy, happiness, time etc. Whatever you have lost, the example of the resurrection of Jesus is all you need to remind you that Jesus finished the work several years ago, and whatever you lost can be restored. You can start again!

9TH HOLY GHOST CONGRESS

UNCERTAINTY FOR CHRISTIANS IN KENYA

The crisis in Kenya has highlighted the persecution faced by many Christians. Several media sources have reported the plight of Christians in this tragic violence. According to BosNewsLife, several dozens of Christians were burnt alive in a protestant church in Eldoret, 185 miles from Nairobi. Some of the victims actually sought refuge in the church as a safe haven only to be attacked with dire consequences. Another account of persecution reported was the killing of veteran American missionaries. As a result of this fighting, several missionary programmes in Kenya cannot take effect leaving thousands in desperate need of aid. Please remember our African brethren in your prayers.

The practice of affirming is the first ingredient to experiencing joy in any relationship - Philippians 1:3-5 “I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now.” If we want to experience joy in our relationships then we must begin by affirming the people that we are relating with. Paul tells the Philippians that he values them and they bring him joy. Paul counts them as partners in the important work of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. When Paul said that the Philippians were partners in the gospel, he was pointing out their valuable contribution in spreading God’s message. They contributed through their practical help when Paul was in Philippi and through their financial support when he was in prison. You cannot enjoy those you criticise. This is not to say that you overlook sin, or you do not correct those who are going to hurt themselves or others. Nevertheless, there is enough good in the worse of us to affirm. You can only enjoy those you affirm. Affirmation lubricates relationships. Affirmation comes in different ways! You can affirm by verbally praising

what another does or is worth. However, when you take time to play with your child, you are affirming his/her importance. When you are patient in teaching someone a new skill, you are affirming their potential to learn the skill. Husbands, when you fulfil your vow of fidelity and unconditional love to your wives, you are affirming your integrity and the value of your wives. How do I affirm people that are different to me? Most of us know how to affirm people who are like us or people from whom we want something. Unfortunately, we often do not affirm those who are different from us or who oppose us, because to do so we suggest they are right and we are wrong. Even worse, we sometimes do not affirm those who are closest to us, because we take them for granted. The good news is that we can intentionally affirm anyone and everyone. I have seen fathers who affirm their children but are careless with their wives or vice versa. I have seen church people who affirm one another at church and are careless with their family members at home. I have also seen church members who affirm other churches except their own. (The grass seem to always look greener on the

other side – forgetting the water bill might be high). The truth is God gives us enough time, resources and words to affirm our spouse, child and anybody else He brings into our lives. Before you go to bed tonight, pray with (that means out loud and maybe holding hands) your spouse, your parents or your child, and include in your prayer what you are thankful to God regarding them. You will be amazed how affirming that is to them. If you live alone why not try it on the phone. Do unto others as you want them to do to you. Make your motto; ‘Others first’ especially during this Easter season. Jesus laid down his life to lift up ours. For some of us affirming others might mean us having to die to self to bring joy into the life of others.

SINGLE & LOVING IT! "I AM SO ASHAMED" by Moji Adesanya

We make choices in our lives. Some are very minor or perhaps insignificant, while others determine the course of our lives. Did you ever make a choice that you wish you could take back? I’m with you on that one. When I sit amongst my friends, we discuss some wrong choices we made in the past (trust me you don’t want to hear some of them,). An older friend of mine made one choice that almost finished her. She knew it was wrong but when she opened the door to one, the others quickly followed. The shame that came from her choices caused her to rush to other choices – like a divorce. After bad choices comes – FEELINGS! The emotions kick in big time and command to be followed. When emotions become the primary force behind the choices Christian singles make, you will find that bad choices are followed with more bad choices, and pain with more pain Shame is an emotion that many Christian singles find in their path after poor choices of the past. Shame is

8

like a gater that does not open to allow us move to a place of safety and restoration. It is always easier for us to allow the emotion of shame with his cousin guilt to imprison us. We become stuck to the past and this can go on for years or the rest of our lives.

What can we as singles do in such situations? We need to remember that God has forgiven us. We should accept the forgiveness with thanksgiving and let Him take control of our emotions. A choice that overrides emotions and puts God first is essential for us as singles to begin the process towards health and total freedom. The forces of evil want to keep us under the control of shame and guilt. Such a condition will create inner voices that speak negativity, depression, and self pity to us continually; we must never trust our emotions at a time like this. God wants us to move from the neighbourhood of shame back home to His peace, freedom and wholesome love. Remember the story of the prodigal son? Why is that story in the Bible? I suggest it is because God knew that you and I would make such

praisereel mistakes. He wants to be sure that we understand how to handle such times in our lives. What happened when the prodigal son came home? The father ran to meet him and wept like a baby at the return of his Son. God, our Father, is waiting to run to meet us if we are willing to turn away from our emotions and confess our sins and errors. He wants to hug kiss and snuggle us and shower us with love and care . 1John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

and on by merely flicking a switch. BUT they are the product of a DIET. Yes, feelings/emotions are the result of a diet that we feed our spirit. We need to change our diet and feed ourselves with positive things starting with the WORD of God.

“…you will find that bad choices are followed with more bad choices, and pain with more pain.” Once you have reconciled with God, ask Him whom He wants you to reconcile with on this earth. What? You do not feel like it? Wait a minute dear Sister or brother, It was these same feelings that got you into trouble and those same feelings are filling your spirit right now. I realize that feelings are not turned off

“Let go and let God” goes the popular saying, love yourself, be good and kind to all and I can assure you will feel good from inside. It is sometimes hard, but keep trying, don’t give up because I see a light in the tunnel.

MEETING THE

MIDNIGHT CREW by Kunle Falodun The gospel music industry in Nigeria is undergoing a revolution, like most things in that country of 130million people. The industry has witnessed the rise of a new generation of singers who are not satisfied with maintaining the status quo, but are pushing the limits, changing the image of gospel music forever. One of these groups is one with the somewhat mysterious name; “Midnight Crew”. The Midnight Crew is a gospel group, known in Nigeria for their unique style of music, fusing Nigerian “fuji music” and other traditional music systems into modern energetic gospel music. With real names, Patricia Uwaje-King (team co-coordinator), Odunayo Ojo, Gbenga Oyebola and Michael Abdul. Michael Abdul, spoke to Praisereel during a recent tour of the team to London. When asked how Midnight Crew started, Michael said “ it started years ago whilst we were all students at the Yaba College Of Technology Lagos Nigeria. At that time, we were part of a great interdenominational choir called, “Original love ”. We were fulfilled during this time, as we had a passion for reaching people, which we achieved as members of the choir. We were able to hold the choir up by our raw passion for one year until we left school”. He continued “after we left school, we missed the way we were reaching people for God, the passion was burning in us, and therefore we got together and started the midnight crew. We announced the Midnight Crew in those days by visiting the churches of all our former choir members (Original love) about fifty churches in all”. After this, we

released our first album in 2003 named Fusion. Fusion was not a commercial success, but it made us very popular, it wasn’t a commercial success because of piracy really, but it got to various hands and increased our popularity in Nigeria especially among the youths”. When asked where the name Midnight Crew came from, Michael said with enthusiasm “ The meaning is deep, first, in the book of Judges, Gideon took ten men on a mission at midnight and God gave him victory, also, the bible says weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning, the midnight is the period of crossing over to a new day. Therefore it signifies victory and hope” he stated . Praisereel enquired about their international experience, and Michael said “ We first came to London in 2006 on the invitation of Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of KICC. He got our CD from someone and when he came to Nigeria, we ministered at a meeting where he was and he there and then insisted we had to come to London” after this a company brought us to London for a concert between March and April in 2007, it was this time that we met Pastor Andrew Adeleke of RCCG House of Praise, who has become a mentor to us since then, and we have since ministered at House Of Praise several times. We currently have invitations from the USA, Ghana and Kenya which we hope to honour in the near future”, he added. Probing Further, Praisereel asked about their style of music and why they do it. “ Our vision is to tear down the walls of religion through music and reach the outcast of the society” he stated philosophically, “we therefore decided to sing gospel to them using their language, but we ended up reaching even some people within the church”. Michael has a message for upcoming artistes, “keep coming up, and never stop”.

BUILDING YOUR VISION FOR THE NEXT LEVEL A vision is the perception of what your tomorrow looks like. The picture of your future! Your past only exists in your memory and cannot be revisited, but your fortune is your future. The best can only be before you. God’s vision is consistent and constant, though it may not be instant. God promised Abraham in Genesis 15:1-7 to make him a father of nations even though he was barren at the time. But God’s promises came to pass.

COMPONENTS OF A WHOLESOME VISION Any vision from God reveals God’s purpose for your life. It’s not about you, it’s about Him. Jer 1:4-5, Eph 1:3. The time frame for your assignment is just a part of the entire agenda. God does not allow a Vacuum to linger. Burn when you have the fire! There is a divine location for your assignment. Find it. In carrying out your vision, be unique. Principles may be the same, but methods are different. Identify your company carefully. The kind of people who will help you will be revealed to you. You won’t hear God until some people leave your life. In Genesis 13, God did not prosper Abraham fully until he separated from Lot.

WHAT VISION DOES Vision gives direction to your destiny. Vision inspires hope Vision inspires motivation Vision activates creativity Vision invigorates Vision connects you with destiny helpers Vision attracts grace Vision brings you into focus Vision reveals your passion. Vision illuminates your world

Someone once described success as carrying out and executing God’s vision for your life. If there is a delay in realising your vision, it is because God wants you to have the latest. Alternatives do not satisfy, never give up your vision. You may be an immigrant and worried that your vision is not being realised; don’t be dismayed, a lot of people in the bible migrated elsewhere to make it, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph etc. Life sometimes may not give you what you deserve; life gives you what you place a demand on. It is not entirely about your location, your vision determines how far you can go, therefore to get to the next level YOU NEED TO.

ENLARGE YOUR VISION, MOVING TO THE NEXT LEVEL Life essentially is a risk, a race started since you risked death as one of a army of invisible tiny spermatozoa to fertilize an egg from your mother. But you won that race, why then are you afraid to take more risks? Changing of your level can only happen when God sees faith in you. This world is being ruled by people with ideas and risk takers. God has moved to a new address, why are you still at the old address? You must learn to know when a season is over and a new one needs to start.

THINGS THAT CAN STOP YOU GETTING TO THE NEXT LEVEL The people or things that have refused to change in your life. IT IS TIME TO CHANGE THEM! Things or people that have finished fulfilling their purpose in your life. LET THEM GO! Things or people that may likely put you into trouble. FLEE FROM THEM. The good that is standing in the way of your best. DON’T REMAIN AT THE SAME LEVEL. There is always a higher level. That which is not part of God’s programme for your life. DO AWAY WITH IT!

“It is not entirely about your location, your vision determines how far you can go…” 14

21st Century Dads Continued from last edition of PraiseReel by Wole Akinkumi Dads and Teenagers Children need you the most when they are teenagers. They are going through so much with their bodies changing, with their minds wondering about the opposite sex, pressures with having to take exams for the first time, pressure with friends expecting certain behaviours from them that parents or even they might not exactly agree with, pressures at home as parents expect them to act more responsibly etc. Teenagers rely upon their dads for conversation that reassure them that they are loved for who they are. They are meeting new people, taking on new challenges, getting confused by peer pressure. Simply having a grounded relationship with people who love them and accept them for who they are could be the biggest thing you give your child during adolescence. Having both parents, rather than one, saying the same things to you gives you a greater sense of belief. They can’t both be wrong! It is not only teenage boys that rely on their dads for these things. Teenage girls get guidance about how to relate with boys and later on with men. This can deliver them from many distractions, heart aches, and confusions about how valuable they are. They also learn how to plan for the future from their fathers.

“…praying WITH your children is probably the second most important thing” Where to get help Based on the above and from what we wrote in the last edition, you will agree that dads have a very important role to play in the family unit. Even if you are doing very well already, there are many ways to improve if you make the conscious effort to think about them. The Holy Spirit is our main help! The bible describes him as our comforter, helper and teacher. He’ll teach you things you don’t know. He’ll help you offer the exact support that they need. God is the father of all fathers. It makes more sense to get you tips and directions from Him

directly. Therefore, being close to God and being prayerful is a major step in being a good parent to your children. Apart from praying about your children, praying WITH your children is probably the second most important thing. It teaches your children to pray which will come in handy when you’re not around, and makes the Holy Spirit the third person in your relationship with each child. Being in a threesome relationship with a person and God is the perfect way to maintain harmony. Your communication with the other person will be impeccable. Believe me, with such a relationship, you shouldn’t experience the typical woes of parent/teenage relationships. Remember… God is counting on you to raise Godly children.

Breaking through

the glass ceiling ( SUMMARY OF A PRESENTATION BY MRS IBUKUN ADEBAYO AT THE HOUSE OF PRAISE CHARLTON MEMBERSHIP CARE DEPARTMENT ORGANISED CAREER CLINIC HELD AT THE CHURCH AUDITORIUM ON THE 12TH OF JANUARY 2008)

Compiled by Seun Ojo Achievement of managerial excellence can be attained by grasping the concept of tools for success and perceiving or seeing past barriers (glass ceiling) that may hinder delivery of excellent service. The tools for success are quite broad and vary depending on the field of speciality.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AS A TOOL FOR SUCCESS One of the key tools for success is Personal development which relates to ‘investing in knowledge’. By investing in knowledge, you broaden your awareness pertaining to the job at hand, thus allowing you to put into practice the depth of knowledge acquired. Through learning, i.e. seminars, conferences, networking events etc., one can achieve/deliver an excellent level of managerial service.

DETERMINATION Determination enables you to stay on course, i.e. endure challenges that may arise on the journey to success, whilst self-motivation is the driving force to enable you to see your goal through to fruition.

APPROACHABILITY AS A TOOL FOR SUCCESS Approachability is a necessity for success. Being approachable paves the way for several doors of opportunities to be opened to you, which could lead to greater things, and allow you to build a rapport with others. Approachability is key in all areas of one’s life, i.e. socially, career-wise etc. Network, and remain approachable.

INTEGRITY AS A TOOL FOR SUCCESS

Dayo Olomu has done it again! Dayo, one of UK’s top motivational coaches and personal development trainers is out with a new sensational, powerful and inspirational audio CD: You Got The Power!

This is definitely one not to be missed. To get copies for yourself and your team, order on-line at www.adonaibooks.com or contact us via email or phone, info@adonaibooks.com or 07956 587032. For more details or enquires about other motivational and life changing books/materials visit www.adonaibooks.com

Many people start on the right track in pursuit of success but, along the way, drift off to follow the crowd, deviating from their goal, leaving only the minority to succeed. Integrity is a key factor if one wants to make it, but is even more critical if you want to not only achieve your goal but also ‘stay there’ once you’re there.

TURN YOUR PREJUDICE INTO YOUR KEY MOTIVATOR Be prepared to be in the minority! It’s a privilege to be amongst the ‘minority’ who excel in a ‘foreign land’, and all the biases and prejudices that exist out there are propellers for your strive towards excellence. Prejudices are meant to be tackled, and used as a source of motivation to drive you towards your goal; not a reason or excuse to quit! It’s easier to quit, and quite hard to strive and face challenges head on to achieve your goals but success isn’t for quitters! No more excuses for failure, be self-critical but don’t beat yourself up over failures! Equip yourself with the skills and knowledge to break into the elite! There’s plenty of room for more visionaries!

Using Your Time Wisely: Helpful tips on saving grocery bills Continued from last edition of PraiseReel

by Abosede Adentan

Be a smart shopper. Bargain-hunt. Avoid impulse buying, shop with a list, and don't buy groceries when you're hungry. Experiment, maybe money-off coupon clipping is a good idea, but perhaps a home-shopping channel is not. (Prov. 31:14 & 21). A meal planner will revolutionise your shopping. It takes a little bit of effort - you'll need to find half an hour to think "food thoughts”.

Meal planner Each week includes only 5 planned days. Weekends are left free so you can go to the shop and choose something you fancy or get a takeaway.

On a rough piece of paper, list 20 meals that your family enjoys. Do it in groups of 4 or 5 food types, so say you start with pasta, find 4 pasta dishes for your list. Then maybe chicken dishes, then fish. Simple foods like pizza or sausages can be listed as well as more substantial meals like roast chicken.

“Your meals don't have to be complicated to be tasty. Nor do they have to contain lentils to be healthy!” Now, take your chart and start to fill in the boxes from your list. Roughly balance the weeks by including a pasta or rice dish, a chicken recipe, and a fish recipe each week. Add matching accompaniments to each dish such as potatoes, boiled, baked, roast or chipped. And balance the meal with a vegetable. You can now write next week’s shopping list from the first week of your Planner.

Tips Your meals don't have to be complicated to be tasty. Nor do they have to contain lentils to be healthy! "Junk" food made at home with good quality ingredients can be just as healthy and appeal to the kids. Homemade pizzas, chicken nuggets and burgers can sit comfortably side by side with more grown up food. Keep the "five alive" guideline in your mind... we should be eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day: a glass of orange juice at breakfast and ice cream/ pudding for afters. On days when you know you won't be at your best (Fridays?) or when you're often rushed, plan a simple meal like sausages and chips. Use days when you often have more time or energy for meals that take longer to prepare. Think about your time table... for example, could you pop a chicken and some jacket potatoes in the oven to be ready when you get home from work or an after school activity? Is there a time you could make one or two things for the freezer that you can just reheat during the week? Get your children as involved as possible in the planning - they might be encouraged to help do shopping lists and even cook.

life of luxury: luxurious living from around the world by Kunle Falodun

In this brand new column of PraiseReel, we will be featuring the elements of luxurious living from around the world. From the magical to the beautiful to the outrageously luxurious, we shall scour the four corners of the world, seeking to amuse, entertain and enlighten you. Our aim? To challenge your imagination! This edition, we are taking you on a journey to the Middle East

THE WORLD’S ONLY 7 STAR HOTEL Construction of Burj Al Arab-(Tower Of The Arabs) began in 1994, and was not concluded for 6 years. Architect Tom Wright said "The client wanted a building that would become an iconic or symbolic statement for Dubai; this is very similar to Sydney with its Opera House, or Paris with the Eiffel Tower. It needed to be a building that would become synonymous with the name of the country." The hotel was built by South African construction contractor Murray & Roberts and cost $650 million to build. Burj Al Arab characterizes itself as the world's only "7-star" property, a designation considered by travel professionals to be hyperbole. All major travel guides and hotel rating systems have a 5-star maximum, which some hotels attempt to out-do by ascribing themselves "6-star" status. Yet according to the Burj Al Arab's official site, the hotel is a "7-star deluxe hotel". Near the top of the building is a suspended helipad supported by a cantilever. The helipad has featured some of the hotel's notable publicity events. Irish singer Ronan Keating shot his music video Iris on the helipad. In March 2004, professional golfer Tiger Woods hit several golf balls from the helipad into the Persian Gulf, while in February 2005, professional tennis players Roger Federer and Andre Agassi played an unranked game on the helipad, which was temporarily converted into a grass tennis court, at a height of 211 meters. The helipad has no borders or fences on the edges and if a player hit a winner the tennis balls would plunge down to the ground. The hotel boasts 8,000 square meters of 22-carat gold leaf and 24,000 square meters of 30 different types of marble. Despite its size, the Burj Al Arab holds only 28 double-story floors which accommodate 202 bedroom suites. The smallest suite occupies an area of 169 square meters (1,819 square ft), the largest covers 780 square meters (8,396 square ft). It is one of the most expensive hotels in the world. The cost of staying in a suite begins at $1,000 per night and increases to over $15,000 per night; the Royal Suite is the most expensive, at $28,000 per night. There is reportedly a fee of about $100 payable, just to look around the hotel. The marketing technique of self-declaring the “7 star” title has worked very well. Burj al-Arab became one of the most sought after destinations, and not only in the United Arab Emirates. The service and the unseen luxury definitely make it stand out of the other 5 star hotels. The service includes private chauffeur with Rolls Royce or BMW 7series, private reception desk on every floor, helicopter pad (helicopter trips to the centre of Dubai or to the Dubai International Airport). One of its restaurants, is located 200 meters above the Persian Gulf, offering a view of Dubai. Another restaurant, which is accessed via a simulated submarine voyage, features a large seawater aquarium. The Burj Al Arab has attracted criticism as well as praise, and the major criticism almost always states the fact that the hotel is a triumph of money over practicality.

TESTIMONIES THIS IS THE LORD’S DOING. IT IS MARVELLOUS IN OUR SIGHT! GOD GAVE ME MY DREAM JOB I gave a testimony last month on how I had a covenant with God. Believing God for divine intervention I gave my last bursary as a student nurse toward the church’s building fund. After my last clinical placement, I travelled to Nigeria. On my arrival back to the U.K I was worried about getting a job, my last testimony was how I miraculously got a job with a private hospital with a fantastic offer of over £25,000 per annum and starting on band 6 instead of band 5. My old course-mates were starting on £ 21,000 – 23,000. Although I wanted a job with the NHS I did settle with the private hospital because it was my only available option. I went for an NHS job interview in December and Jehovah blessed me with the job through His divine assistance. Just when I thought the covenant God was done with me, the NHS pay is over £27,000 and its closer to home. I believe that God, who has given me the job, will protect me as it is a medium secured forensic Hospital. Praise is to our God (AMEN) BUKOLA ONUOHA

damage to the car and it could have ended my life, I thank God that I am still standing. God kept my whole Family in 2007 and we are all grateful.

HE MOVED ME TO THE NEXT LEVEL I want to thank God for my life, when I came into this country over 4 years ago, things were very tight, couldn’t afford to eat let alone pay my rent and my tuition fees. I just want to thank God from where He has taken me from, where I am and where He’s taking me to. I graduated with a 2:1 last year, I have a car of my own, I have more than enough that I keep travelling from one country to another. I BLESS HIS HOLY NAME.

ECTOPIC PREGNANCY I want to thank the Lord for His divine intervention in my life on the 2nd of January 2008 I was diagnosed to have an ectopic pregnancy I thank the Lord for He intervened even without any surgery though I lost the baby but still thank the Lord for being good and faithful to me and my family. MRS OLUTOYE

SALVATION OF THE LORD I want to thank God for what He did for me last year. God saved me from death 3 times. Also I had been looking for a specific job since January last year. To the glory of God, after several ups and downs, I got the job last December.

THE LORD PRESERVED MY LIFE On the 21st December 2007, the Lord preserved my life in a malicious attack; A brick was thrown at my car as I was driving on a dual carriage way. Though there was great

ACADEMIC FAVOUR I give God praise for my life is a living testimony to God’s faithfulness and favour. I really want to thank God for seeing me through University. How I got into university was a true miracle. God kept me and allowed me to qualify for home fees. I wrote several exams and I didn’t know any of the answers on a particular paper, but I still came out with a distinction! This week is my graduation ceremony. Glory be to God!
