THE ‘ARCHICOMIC’ WEEK 01 – WEEK 03

Unlike a typical architectural monograph, an ‘Archicomic’ uses the comic format to express radical agenda for architecture where method, process, instruments and concepts are constantly questioned and redefined.

ARCHICOMIC

TIA HAU XIN

SEMESTER 03

3am , 24th July 2017, studio , UCSI block E Ezra, an architecture student has been up all night trying to develop an idea for his design project in UCSI block E, but ideas were hard to come. He’s browsed every facebook posts, pinterest articles and tinder profiles but no ideas came to mind. After hours of comtemplating, he decided to take a nap in the recharge pod for 30 minutes.

7am , 24th July 2037, studio UCSI block E Ezra finally wakes up, looks at his phone only to realize that he woke up at 7am, not realizing that we woke up 20 years in the future in the year 2037. “Oh no, I woke up late! I have to work on my design, I still haven’t got my idea yet.” However, he did seem that something was a bit off. The class looks different. Ezra looks around the class and it seems like it has been abandoned for a very long time. Everything was scattered on the floor, papers, materials, equipment, you name it. Suddenly, he Ezra finds it hard to breath and his head was getting heavier as minutes went by. He collapsed on to the floor and felt like fainting until …..

PROJECT 01 : ARCHICOMIC

YEAR 02

A mysterious figure, dressed in a full black cloak and a mask approached him from behind and put on the same mask on Ezra as the one he was wearing. After a while, Ezra regains consciousness and felt his strength coming back to him. He stood up and expressed his gratitude to the mysterious man. Ezra asked for his name, but he received no reply. He scanned the man, and saw a tag on the man’s chest. RN97. “That must be his name” Ezra thought to himself. Then RN97 signaled Ezra to follow him out the collapsed building which was once Block E. When they both got out of the building, Ezra was shocked. Not only Block E, but the whole area looked like it was hit by a nuclear bomb, leaving all in the ruins. The hill that was once covered with lush greenery is nothing more than a stone hill, slowly eroding away by the force of nature. The air was stale, smoky and suffocating. Without the mask, Ezra knows he would not last for 30 minutes. There were no birds flying in the sky. In fact, everything was quiet around. No sound, nobody in sight. It was like a war has been waged and everyone paid the price. Next, Ezra was taken to a lake. The water was brown and tainted. It was full of rubbish. Fishes were dead, floating on the surface of the water, amongst the sea of trash.

Semester 03

Ezra realizes the he needed to do something to change the fate of this world. He understands that architects shape the world literally and figuratively and he was really determined to return to his time and fix things to make them right. Ezra and RN97 returned to block E, when the recharge pod was situated. It was time for Ezra to go venture back in time. He thanked RN97 and gestured goodbye. He lied down in the recharge pod. Closed his eyes shut and slowly fell into a lullaby.

YEAR 02

3:30am , 24th July , studio Block E

Ezra finally woke up. Once again, he looked at his phone. It was 3:30am, July 24th 2017. He was back in time. He looked around, everything was back to normal. The studio was clean and arranged. His works are still on the table, exactly where he left them. Fueled by motivation to achieve great things, he jumped off the pod and onto the floor. Hurriedly went to his work and starts sketching. Prologue We return back to the future, to the time when Ezra was returning back to his time. Once he disappeared from that universe, RN97 takes off his mask and wiped his tears off his cheeks. He entrusted his goals to restore the nature to his younger self. To young Ezra. Moral of the story •

As an architect, we have a duty to both society and the environment. An architect’s job is to design a building to cater the needs of the end users, while sustaining the current environment if not make it better. Once you’ve hit the wall during project, it is okay to take a short break off work in order to rest your mind and body. Good ideas will come at unexpected time.

SEMESTER 03

WEEK 01 Best Day Scenario & Worst Day Scenario

are dripping down my forehead. Skins are blanketed with goose bumps. It’s S weats 11:30pm and I am still working on my boards. Printing shop closes at midnight and time is quickly running out. WILL I MAKE IT IN TIME? I asked myself. I looked around and I see my classmates, comrades, working diligently on their projects. I chuckled to myself. A quick glimpse and they look like a zombie, lifeless and miserable. We all do. I looked at the time, “CRAP, IT’S ALMOST 12 I WONT MAKE IT TIME” only option is to finish up my board, move on to the model and only print out tomorrow morning at 8am, and quickly pin up at 9am. Stomach grumbling, demanding a hot plated meal served with cold beverage. A luxury I can’t afford, at least not right now. The best I can do is the biscuits I bought from the convenience store earlier. It’s 1:30am, and I’m finally moving on to making the model. With the dimensions in head, I carefully cut the modeling board; making use of everything I have, fearing the resources will not be enough. Restocking the ammunitions at 5am would be impossible. “SHOPS ARE CLOSED!”, I told myself. After scavenging around the class, I stumbled across an unnamed and unattended used modeling board lying on the floor. I looked left and right, to make sure no one was looking before picking it up. It’s not much but it will enough.

7

Once again, my stomach is protesting against famine. I’m down to my last 2 biscuits and water is never enough to tame the grumpy beast. I forced myself to run on an empty stomach and finally….. at 7am, my model is ready to be presented.

PROJECT 01 : ARCHICOMIC

Pre final is only 2 hours, I quickly changed my outfit and made my way to the printing store. “PHEW, IT’S OPEN ALREADY”, I exclaimed. However, I wasn’t the only one there. My comrades, were already in line to get their boards printed and I had to wait for my turn to come. I printed my boards and hurried off to class. It was 8:45 and pre final begins shortly. I was late and once again. I wanted to pin up but all the pin up panels are occupied. “WHAT A HASSLE, IF ONLY WE HAD MORE PANEL I COULD JUST PIN UP AND PRACTISE BEFORE PRESENTING” but it looks like all I can do was to wait for my turn to present.

YEAR 02

Scenario In The Studio • • • • • •

Pulled off an all nighter at studio Tummy is hungry because of skipping meals No time for going dinner Printing shop closes at 12 am but still editing Printing shop opens at 8am, but pinup is 9am Feeling sick & weak because of lacking sleep & food

When it came to my turn, I was confronted by lecturers armed equipped with firearms, and masked with intimidation and ferocity, “TODAY’S THE DAY” I told myself. “Everything I have worked for, all I have prepared will be decided today. I started presenting and by the time I realized it, smiles were gleaming off the lecturers face. “I’M THROUGH” The lecturers were impressed. I can proceed to external crit with minimal alterations. The battle has been fought. I looked around the studio. It looked like a battlefield. Some of my comrades were victorious, others were left battered, drenched in blood of their own. Victorious or not, we rewarded ourselves with a well-deserved good night sleep and meals fit for kings. My design was approved and it definitely can’t get any better.

T

he “Honey Bee Charging Pod” is an essential response to the sleepless folks in the studio of architecture. The sleeping pod has the design Inspiration from the rigid arrangement of the honey comb. The idea is that it act as a shelter for the bee, same to the students in the studio. In the current situation in studio, when the student is tired, all they can do is to lay their face on the table. Now, with the “Honey Bee Charging Pod”, students can have personalize space for sleeping in the studio.

11

PROJECT 01 : ARCHICOMIC

Problems

Solution To counter the problems & achieve better outcomes, we proposed multiple response to be taken into considerations; multiple recharging pods, with storage & add-on curtains.

Students health and well-being are out top priority. Things like lack of sleep, unhygienics and minimal privacy can lead to stress.

Lack of sleep

Sleeping area

Organized storage

Messy studio

Stress as we all know, leads to bad student well-being, as a consequence, the academic results will be lower than expected.

he “One Touch Vending Machine” is essential to have in the studio. The idea is inspired from the Tokyo, Japan street. Every corner in the city has a vending machine. Everyone loves vending machine. In fact, the reason vending machine is so successful is that it is it can be easily operated without need of human taking job to sell the product. It is usable any time, any where. The vending machine shall located in every floor of studio. In UCSI’s studio, it is a joy to all students that they can buy food and beverage without leaving the floor.

DESIGNING WITH SITE WEEK 04 – WEEK 07

The Architecture Design Incubation Centre (ADIC) is the first ever dedicated architectural design research laboratory based in Kuala Lumpur. The centre will investigate and develop new tools of spatial or construction design. Site analysis is carried out to appreciate the nature and original state of the site. Comprehensive site analysis has been studied and compiled. Including strategies to overcome some of the negative impact in the design challenge.

DESIGNING WITH SITE

TIA HAU XIN

SEMESTER 03

WEEK 04 EXPRESSING IDEA : A6 POST CARD & A3 IDEA BRAINSTORMING

My Design Idea My design idea comes from the combination of basic forms. In the plan, it shows clearly my design is a symmetrical design formed by a circle and a letter “A”. The circle shape is located at the centre in plan, it acts as the main feature of my design. The giant floating circle globe symbolize the main entrance that welcomes the people visiting the building, it also attracts the people who pass through it in the traffic. Besides the circle at the centre, the design does include rectangular form. The circle is surrounded with the rectangular that are arranged in a way that it looks like the letter “A”; the circle then sits below the letter. The reason I choose the shape of “A” is that it has the symmetrical language in it. Plus, I want to make my building less square-ish in the overall form; in contrast to the perfectly square cubic form. Inside the building, it contain spaces for work, recreational area, open space, and gathering space. I have created a large void in the centre of the building. The void brings in all the nature from the site; the sunlight, natural ventilation, the plants and the feeling of coolness being in a canyon. There is a centre courtyard that is brought down; the building surrounded are raised. Each block is separated, the “A” form blocks are 2-3 levels, the circle form block is 3 levels. Each of ones has different leveling. The idea of material used for the buildings are the combination of the steel, concrete and use of glass facade.

SEMESTER 03

WEEK 05 ON SITE – CAPABILITY OF THE IDEA

Capability of The Design Idea In my opinion, the overall size of my design could not be fully capable to the site. After carefully examine, the plan of my design could not fit in the long and narrow site, because my plan is a centralize plan, it is very wide which is 1:1 ratio, it could only fit in if the width(43m) of the site longer. The provided with the requirements of setback plus the need to provide internal road and car park, the width is not enough for my design.

T

he site is located in the Kuala Lumpur city centre, next to the Taman Eko Rimba KL which is Bukit Nanas and around the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The site is surrounded with the spectacular high-rise and landmarks in the golden triangle or the capital of the country. It is located at a quiet spot in the hustling and bustling Kuala Lumpur, the site sits next to a main road (Jalan Raja Chulan) that connects old Kuala Lumpur to the new. The site is used as a open space for car parking operation.

First look at the proposed site, you will notice a big contrast of the mixture of green nature environment and concrete built environment. The site is measured roughly 100m long x 43m wide. Looking at the shape of the site, it is clear that the site is long and narrow.

21

In the other aspect, glass material is planned to be implemented for the facade; which I think it could be not sustainable enough to maintain the building and the cost. In the country, sunlight is glaring strongly from morning to evening, the amount of heat will be coming into the building and make the spaces uncomfortable and require mechanical ventilation to cool down. To improve it, louvers or sun shading system can be implemented to the design. Lastly, the idea of having different leveling is not easy without extra work for excavation. The given site is totally flat. Hence, having excavation would cost more to the construction. In conclusion, my design idea is not capable to the site. However, the idea can be better improved and progress to accommodate into the site with the original characteristic.

WEEK 07 PRECEDENT STUDY : HEYDAY ALIYEV CENTER BY ZAHA HADID

Zaha Hadid Architects was appointed as design architects of the Heydar Aliyev Center following a competition in 2007. The Center, designed to become the primary building for the nation’s cultural programs, breaks from the rigid and often monumental Soviet architecture that is so prevalent in Baku, aspiring instead to express the sensibilities of Azeri culture and the optimism of a nation that looks to the future. The design of the Heydar Aliyev Center establishes a continuous, fluid relationship between its surrounding plaza and the building’s interior. The plaza, as the ground surface; accessible to all as part of Baku’s urban fabric, rises to envelop an equally public interior space and define a sequence of event spaces dedicated to the collective celebration of contemporary and traditional Azeri culture. Elaborate formations such as undulations, bifurcations, folds, and inflections modify this plaza surface into an architectural landscape that performs a multitude of functions: welcoming, embracing, and directing visitors through different levels of the interior. With this gesture, the building blurs the conventional differentiation between architectural object and urban landscape, building envelope and urban plaza, figure and ground, interior and exterior.

PROJECT 03

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN INCUBATION CENTRE WEEK 08 – WEEK 14

The ADIC is designed in a way to merge in to the nature. The building is a passive design, it has logical use of natural lighting and ventilation. The building also integrated with interesting programmes. Features idea showcase area, studio & practitioner space, brainstorming area, fabrication lab, and common spaces.
