The Market 25-62
PUDU WET MARKET in Kuala Lumpur Pudu Wet Market undergoes rapid changes. It has served the KL people for over 50 years as food heaven. With number of stalls exceeding 1300, it has become the largest market in Peninsular Malaysia. The history of this place goes all the way back to 1956. There are outdoor and indoor market, and the design is similar to Chow Kit market, having the unique and history pre-independence building style of Malaysia. Since half a century ago, this market has been the focus of the locals and contribute to the growth of local economy. Every day, there will be customer from different places coming here. The market starts its operation in early morning, and would only stop when the crowd has gone away in the afternoon. To the older generation of KL people, this is a must-go place to purchase the things needed for major festivals. Regardless of the varieties of products in hypermarkets, it is here that has the bargain deal: fresh, cheap, and variety of food. Other than fruit, meat, seafood, there are also stalls that sell sweets, snacks, toys, grocery, incense and related products used in traditional Taoism ceremony. Pottery (which is rare to be found nowadays and there is a stalls here that customized in making pottery), kitchen utensils and other products can also be found here.

Pudu is known for its long history for being one of the newly develop township area in the early 1950s. Being in Malaysia, there is a lot of culture and religion living together harmony. It can be seen around Pudu area where, stacks of people from different ethnic, skin colour, culture, ages can be seen. The market itself consist of different types of people selling, and the people coming to here is no different.

The Surrounding The market is surrounded by old commercial shop lots which is the old buildings built in early 1970s after the main building for the market is built. The market has bring up the economy during that time. The outside market is covered with beautiful canopy. While it is beautiful looking from top, but as a buyer walking in the market street, it can be quite unpleasant. It is due to the dirtiness of walkway, wet potholes, not uniform stall arrangement.

The Inside The indoor market is the main building. It is the first building built for the market, before the street market opened. Inside it is unmaintained. The floor tile are dirty, dark environment, bad smell, a lot of un-used space, and old.

Plaster Site Model It was a fun project to try out making site model by using plaster as the main material. All of us(12) including our tutor Mr. James Lim are involved in the process. It was fun working together with the team in MadeLab UCSI University Block E. The plaster model helps me to visualise the proportion, size, and design strategies for my proposal.

Precedent Study My design idea came from different type of elements that I research. The main feature of my design is the building form which is the arch, reflecting the style from the existing market.

The Baazar The idea of this visual montage is creating an spatial quality of the centre baazar. It is inspired by the Chinese gate in Terengganu China Town. Two sides of building having Fitness and Cooking all together. Creating a healthy lifestyle community place for the people.

1. Market Hall

Improvements: • Allow natural lighting enter to market, through the method of strip vent created above the arch beam. • Hygiene issues, to renovate the floor, walls, and changing the roof sheet, and introduce facilities such cleaner room and waste management. • Propose new layout for stall layout. It is arrange with dry and wet zone. • Allow seamless circulation from stall to stall, from main centre walkway, channel people walking to smaller walkways, buyers can walk in many loops inside within the market. • Improve cross ventilation to allow bad smell to exit from the building. Issues : The existing market condition is less welcoming. The issues found is the people inside the market is less compared to the outside. I believe the reason why people are shopping outside more than inside, is because of these few problems. The existing market needs a revamp. Once you walk in to the exiting market, first impression will be, the floor is dirty with shoe prints everywhere, the bad smell from the drain water, its dark inside that make you feel like inside a cave, a lot of empty stall left un-used, the floor is totally wet that people would fall down if not careful, the market is filled with boxes scatter around wasting a lot of space.

2. Hawker Centre
HARRYTIA
Improvements: • Relocate the hawker centre • New hawker centre located inside the market • Being at the upper half of the market, it created an interaction between market and the hawker stall. • More pleasing eating areas, green pockets introduced. • Bring in nature to the building, with sunlight and vegetation. • Provide more hawker stall opportunity to operate inside. • Provide place for hang out and have meal for the seller, the buyer inside and outside.
Issues : Pudu market is not just a place for people to buy daily grocery, it is also a place for people to eat after they had a great shopping there. There is a existing hawker centre, which is under the roof of extended out building at the rear of the wet market building.
The hawker centre is an area which is exposed to the outside road and big rubbish bins just right in front. I feel there is a need to solve the issue, where people eating there can be distracted by the smell from the rubbish and the dust from the road. Also there seating areas are not as welcoming for people to come, especially those who are first came to this market. I mean, who would like to sit on a wet wooden bench and under the rain leaking zinc roof?

3. Children Cooking
HARRYTIA
Improvements: • This is considered as a children care centre. • Mums can register her children to this centre before going to buy in the market. • Various type of activity organized every day for the children. • Activities includes baking class, colouring, games, learning, etc. • The staff may look after the children for the mum.
Issues : Most of the time, where house wife had to take care of their children. When they go to everywhere outside, they have to take close look at their children, doesn’t matter where they go to shopping complex, to cut hair, or administrative office to submit something. It is no exception to coming to wet market like this. Mum had to hold their children all the time while they are shopping in the market, some times it can be making the shopping process more tired. Mum has to spend more attention to her children.

4. Masak Kitchen
HARRYTIA
Improvements : • Various cooking class available in Masak Kitchen, including cooking healthy recipes for malay food, Chinese food, western food, indian food and etc. • Given an opportunity for the people who are willing to share their cooking recipe, and conduct cooking class for the young peoples. • Also not excluding to those enthusiast who loves cooking, it is a community centre for them to gather together to share different recipe and knowledge. • Features glazing that allow studentsover looking to the wet market inside the building, creating a visual connection in both space. Issues : In todays world, most youngster are in a pain situation when thinking about what to cook for lunch or dinner. It is due to the lack of knowledge about cooking. In the early days, our parents are more well equipped with the cooking knowledge. Inside their brain, they have all the recipes that serves the family for decades. It is due to the fact that during their times, the lifestyle are not as hectic as today, they have time to learn and try different cooking styles. Compared to younger generation today, we are filled with a lot of things and schedule to be done. Hence, we tend to eat at restaurant more, and seldom cook. But, cooking at home always healthier, that is why we should learn some cooking skills to live with.

Improvements: • Provide a cozy space for the people to gather. • Serve as cafeteria, library and discussion place. • Allow people who have passion in cooking to gather around, share ideas and knowledge within each other. • A meeting venue for events organizer who are using Pudu Baazar multi function space or for the whole market.
Issues : There are lacking of place for ladies and woman to gather around together. It is important that these people have their personal space which allow them to gather around and talks about their hobbies and interest, especially in cooking. Without the disturbance from the noise, smell, environment outside, it is better to provide them a cozy place to gather around. It is also not limit to mans who have the passion in cooking.

6. Pudu Baazar
HARRYTIA
Improvements: • Introduce of multi function space at the centre, between two building. • Various events can be held, cooking competition, weekend flea market, wholesale, fitness, family day games and more. • Allow people to have a break in this open space, act as recreational area after tired walk in the market street. • Bring more opportunity for people to organize series of talks and sharings. Issues : The pudu market today is mostly taken up by a lot of unorganized arrangement of stalls, which takes up possible usable space. At the side of the market, there are some stalls taken up the space, and many store set up equipment are all around the corridor and walkways. The Outdoor Market is very long, messy and density of stall in at a cramp level. Thus, it is needed to introduce some breaks serve as open space allow people to take a breathe from walking inside the crampy market street.
