Wadi Rum The Valley of the Moon in Jordan “Seven Pillars of Wisdow”, T.E. Lawrence

Wadi Rum or Valley of the moon as it is also called. Located in the south of Jordan specifically in Aqaba, a landscape practically unchanged by men, here water and the wind have carved imposing and elevated skyscrapers. Salpicado por inmensas montañas con distintas tonalidades de rojos, amarillos y naranjas, Wadi Rum es un laberinto de paisajes de rocas monolíticas que se erige desde el suelo desértico hasta los 1750 metros de altura y más.

Su nombre Rum significa “alto” o “elevado” en idioma arameo, siendo el punto más elevado el monte Jabal Umm ad Dami con 1854 msnm.

Su majestuoso paisaje de desierto y montañas, su ambiente silencioso y de serenidad hacen sentir al visitante insignificante en este increíble enclave.

Los excursionistas pueden disfrutar de la tranquilidad de los espacios vacios y sin límites, explorar cañones y los depósitos de agua y descubrir los dibujos de las piedras que datan de 4000años atrás.

En cuanto al ecosistema Wadi Rum posee una gran cantidad de tipos de plantas raras y endémicas. En primavera florecen cientos de especies de flores silvestres. Se han registrado aproximadamente 120 especies de aves en esta zona, incluyendo el buitre Leonardo, el Cuervo de cola abanico, el águila de Bonelli y el Cárabo de Hume.

Para los amantes del montañismo Wadi Rum es un lugar ideal, los ascensos pueden variar desde simples excursiones hasta el montañismo casi profesional a más de 900 metros por una pared casi vertical de granito y acantilados de arenisca.

Otro de los atractivos de Wadi Rum es el pueblo Beduino, la tribu Zalabia que habita la región central todavía mantiene su estilo de vida semi-nomada, esta tribu se encarga de organizar ecoturismo de aventura para los visitantes.

Los beduinos se caracterizan por su gran hospitalidad y por acoger al visitante con alegría, invitándole a menudo a tomar un café o comer. Se puede fijar la duración del viaje con anterioridad en el Centro de Visitantes. Al igual que planear las estancias bajo las estrellas en tiendas de campaña beduina, donde disfrutar de una comida tradicional al calor de la lumbre amenizada con música árabe. Como dato curioso se debe pedir permiso antes de fotografiar a los beduinos locales.

Son muchos los platos que probamos mas empezaremos con el “Knobez”, un tipo de pan plano y de gran tamaño que se vende en las panaderías alrededor del país. Se le acompaña con huevos, “Labaneh” (un tipo de queso crema), “Zaatar” (una mezcla de varias especias), aceite de oliva y una taza de té. Los pastelillos como el “Manousheh” que incluye queso y “Zaatar”, son muy comunes en los desayunos de Jordania, además del “Hummus” (yogur con garbanzos), aceitunas, pepinos, tomate y queso fresco.

El plato nacional es el “Mansaf” un plato que consiste en una mezcla de arroz blanco, cordero y “Jameed” (yogur secado al sol). Tiene su origen en la cultura beduina y es un símbolo de supervivencia y hospitalidad.

El “Mansaf” era indispensable para los nómadas que se dedicaban al pastoreo de cabras y camellos en busca de pasto y agua en mitad del desierto. Debido a la escasez de agua el plato se realiza con ingredientes secos como el arroz y yogur seco (jameed), que podía transportarse con facilidad. Se servía en una bandeja de gran tamaño y todo el mundo tenía su porción, incluso los viajeros que habían sido invitados a las tiendas beduinas para refugiarse de las dunas. Ese gesto de hospitalidad aún perdura en la cultura jordana actual.

El “Mansaf” se come principalmente en las bodas, durante festividades religiosas y en otras ocasiones especiales. Mas se puede probar en cualquier restaurant tradicional, puede que te den a elegir entre cordero o pollo, se cocinara con una sutil mezcla de especias y la bandeja estará decorada con piñones y perejil troceado, mas los invitamos a que prueben la receta tradicional.

You can try in any of the traditional restaurants, you can choose between lamb and chicken, is cooked with a soft mix of spices and the plates is adorned with chopped pine nuts and parsley, but we invite you to try the traditional recipe.

La comida jordana suele empezar con una “Mezze” (una selección de entradas variadas), las Mezze más conocidas son el Hummus; Baba Ghanooj o Muttabal (crema a base de berenjenas asadas; Muhammra (crema a base de pimiento); Tabbouleh (ensalada fría de perejil, tomate y hiervas aromáticas); Fattoush (ensalada de verduras con pan pita troceado); Falafel (croquetas de garbanzos especiadas); Mahashi (hojas de vid rellenas de arroz, carne molida y especias) o Fattayer (empanadillas y pequeñas pastas rellenas con carne picada, queso o verduras). Todo ello acompañado de Khobz o pita (pan árabe elaborado en hornos de piedra). Seguido el plato principal que puede ser pollo o cordero acompañado de arroz o pan árabe y acabamos con un dulce.

Una amplia retrospectiva de la variada obra de George Braque, el gran maestro francés del cubismo, se celebrará en el Grand Palais de Paris, entre el 18 de septiembre de 2013 y el 6 de Enero de 2014.

Todos los periodos de su creación están presentes, desde el fauvismo hasta la última obra, que culmina en las series deslumbradoras de los grandes talleres y de los pajaros.

Reconocido en todo el mundo como uno de los principales pintores del siglo XX, tambien fue apreciado por sus cualidades humanas y su personalidad cautivadora. Braque se muestra tanto en el registro del paisaje y de la naturaleza muerta como en el retrato y la escena de interior.

El recorrido de la exposición se centra en los momentos claves del trabajo excepcional del artista, como el cubismo, las canéforas de los años 20 o los últimos paisajes que admiraba Nicolas de Staël. La muestra reúne las obras álgidas y las diversas tematicas que abordo el pintor; canéforas, veladoras y talleres. Esta ambiciosa exposición tambien aborda otras perspectivas: su colaboración con Picasso durante el cubismo; la estrecha relación de su arte con la música y su proximidad a Erik Satie; su complicidad con poetas como Pierre Reverdy, René Char y Francis Ponge y figuras intelectuales determinantes de su tiempo como Jean Paulhan o Carl Einstein.

An ample retrospective of the varied work of George Braque the great French teacher of cubism will be celebrated in the Grand Palais of Paris between September 18 2013 and January 6 2014. Kuki chair by Zara Hadi

Zara Hadid folded a round sheet of plastic to create this chair for Italian brand Sawaya & Moroni. The single indigocoloured sheet has been creased along two lines so the edges almost meet at the back, then bent in the middle to create the seat and backrest. Kuki is a playful, sculptural volume generated from a single surface that follows simple rhythms, curvatures and folds. Scorings and slices have been introduced to amplify the dynamism within the geometry of the design.

Daft Punk siempre ha creado albums llenos de energía y ritmo, es por ello que no es sorpresa que su cuarto álbum de estudio Random Access Memory sea todo un éxito.

A diferencia de sus anteriores producciones, Daft Punk conto con la colaboración de varios artistas para la realización de este álbum,entre los que podemos mencionar Julian Casablancas, DJ Falcon, Panda Bear, Todd Edwards, Nile Rodgers, Paul Williams y Pharrell Williams; en cuanto a los instrumentos usados, también hubo un pequeño cambio, para Random Access Memories hicieron uso más que todo de baterías, sintetizadores y vintage vocoders y limitaron el uso de instrumentos electrónicos.

En cuanto al nombre del álbum, Daft Punk ha declarado que este encapsula su interés por el pasado, en cuanto a lo que tiene que ver con las experiencias humanas y el acceso a la memoria aleatorio; “Estuvimos dibujando un paralelo entre el cerebro y el hard drive. La forma en la cual las memorias se almacenan”. Para ser más precisos acerca de lo que se quiso decir es que mientras Daft Punk producía el álbum, se

dieron cuenta que actualmente la tecnología te permite almacenar una cantidad ilimitada de contenido, pero el contenido producido por artistas contemporáneos ha disminuido en calidad, su meta por lo tanto fue maximizar la capacidad de almacenamiento mediante la grabación de una extensa cantidad de elementos, este proceso en si fue lo que los inspiro a escoger el nombre del álbum.

Acerca del estilo del álbum este posee una vibra muy de la costa oeste, para lograr este efecto Daft Punk se inspiro en albums como Rumours de Fleetwood Mac y The Dark Side of the Moon por Pink Floyd, asimismo el álbum es un homenaje a Michael Jackson, Steely Dan y The Cars.

Este álbum sin duda alguna pasara a la historia ya que como Bangalter mismo asegura “lo más importante en un álbum de música, sea Led Zeppelin o The White Album, o Sgt. Pepper’s o Quadrophenia o Tommy, son aquellos que te llevan en un viaje largo”, Random Access Memory es uno de ellos.

Londres, como toda gran ciudad alberga sus secretos, y en Octubre el Museo de Londres ofrecerá una exhibición investigando los secretos del Cheapside Hoard.

El Cheapside Hoard es un tesoro de finales de los siglos XVI y XVII, fue descubierto por unos trabajadores en 1912 mientras excavaban en un sótano cerca de Cheapside en Londres. El descubrimiento fue fascinante ya que se trataba de una caja de madera que contenía 400 piezas de joyería, que incluía anillos, broches y cadenas, con piedras coloridas y con detalles esmaltados, junto con las joyas estaban botellas de perfumes, jarras de cristal e incluso un salero, todos provenientes de la era Isabelina y de la era Jacobean. Cheapside era conocida en la era Isabelina y en la era Jacobean como el corazón comercial de la Ciudad de Londres.

Los trabajadores que descubrieron el tesoro vendieron los objetos a “Stone Jack”, cuyo nombre real era George Fabian Lawrence el cual era el dueño de una tienda de antigüedades, el pago a los trabajadores efectivo por el descubrimiento de interesantes objetos. Lawrence fue contratado por el Museo Guildhall para buscar nuevas cosas para su colección, y por lo tanto se convirtió en “Inspector de Excavaciones” en 1911 para en ese entonces, naciente Museo de Londres.

Lewis Vernon Harcourt, 1er Vizconde de Harcourt proveyó de fondos para el Museo de Londres para la compra de la mayor parte del tesoro de Cheapside. Algunas piezas se encuentran en el Museo Británico y una cadena de oro se encuentra en el Museo de Victoria y Alberto.

En este caso la exhibición, que se llevara a cabo en el Museo de Londres no solo mostrara la belleza de estas piezas, sino que también expondrá la riqueza de su artesanía y demuestra el comercio internacional de bienes de lujo en ese periodo entre el Viejo Mundo y el Nuevo Mundo, este se ve visible en las piedras preciosas como esmeraldas de Colombia, topacio y amazonitas de Brasil, espinela, iolite y crisoberilo de Sri Lanka, lapislázuli de Afganistán, rubíes de la India, turquesas de Persia y peridoto del Mar Rojo, también ópalos de Bohemia y Hungría, granate, amatistas y perlas de Bahrain.

London, like every city has its secrets and in October the London Museum will have an exhibition investigating the secrets of the Cheapside Hoard.

The Cheapside Hoard is a hoard of late XVI and XVII century, was discover by a workmen in 1912 while they were excavating a cellar near Cheapside in London. The discover was so fascinating, since it was a wood box with 400 pieces of jewellery, including scent bottles, fan holders and a salt-cellar, everything from the Elizabethan and Jacobean era. Cheapside was known in the Elizabethan and Jacobean era as the commercial heart of the City of London, with stores that sold luxury objects.

The workmen that discovered the hoard sold the objects to “Stone Jack”, whose real name was George Fabian Lawrence, a dealer and pawn shop owner, he bought most of the treasure, and then he was hired by the Guildhall Museum for search new items for its collection, being named later “Inspector of Excavations” in 1911 for the nascent Museum of London.

Lewis Vernon Harcour, 1st Viscount of Harcourt, gave funds for the Museum of London for the buy of most of the Cheapside Hoard. Some pieces are in the British Museum and one gold enamel chain is at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

In this exhibition that will be in the London Museum will not only show the beauty of the jewels, but also the rich of its craftsmanship and show how the international commerce of luxury objects was in that time between the New World and the Old World, this is visible in the gemstones with emeralds from Colombia, topaz and amazonite from Brazil, spinel, iolite and chrysoberyl from Sri Lanka, ruby from India, Afghan lapis lazuli, turquoise from Persia, peridot from the Red Sea, Bohemian and Hungarian opal and garnet, amethyst and pearls from Bahrain.

En marzo de 2001, mientras practicaba medicina Hosseini comienza a escribir su primera novela, The Kite Runner. Quizás algunos de ustedes no hayan escuchado hablar de Paraíso Perdido, pues en esta oportunidad queremos hablarles acerca de esta obra maestra, la cual es considerada uno de los mejores poemas que se hayan escrito.

Paraíso Perdido es un poema escrito por el poeta ingles John Milton (1608 – 1674), el poema épico en verso blanco fue originalmente publicado en 1667 en diez libros, una segunda edición fue publicada en 1674, en doce libros. El poema es considerado una obra de arte en el género literario, la historia que narra en realidad no es nada nueva, se puede considerar una historia que fue escrita hace ya mucho tiempo atrás, antes de Cristo, se trata de una historia bíblica acerca de la caída del hombre, abarca desde la tentación de Adán y Eva, la caída del Ángel Satanás y su expulsión.

La historia de Milton tiene dos arcos narrativos el primero es acerca de Satanás o Lucifer y la otra es acerca de Adán Y Eva, el propósito de Milton, el cual el mismo escribió en el Libro I es “justificar las acciones de Dios ante los hombres”, esto lo hizo tocando temas cruciales como lo son el matrimonio y la idolatría.

Cabe destacar que las ideas de Milton eran consideradas, en esa época, (específicamente en el siglo 17) radicales, mas esto no lo detuvo de expresar sus ideas religiosas y políticas.

Paraíso Perdido, desde su publicación ha obtenido grandes elogios, es un clásico de la literatura inglesa y no bastando ha dado origen a un nuevo tópico literario, el cual sique siendo usado en la literatura universal, da de que hablar ya que la interrogante principal de la obra es Porque siendo Dios todopoderoso, no evito la caída de Adán y Eva? Milton responde a esta pregunta revelando un mensaje esperanzador, esto lo logra narrando la historia desde la perspectiva psicológica de los personajes que son Dios, Adán y Eva y Satanás.

Lost Paradise is a poem written by the English poet John Milton (1608 – 1674), the epic poem in blank verse was originally published in 1667 in ten books; a second edition was published in 1674, in twelve books. The poem is considered a work of art in the literary genre, the history is no new, in fact was written many years ago, before Christ, it’s about a biblical story about the fall of man, about the temptation of Adam and Eve, the fallen of the angel Satan and his expulsion.

The Milton’s story have two narrative arch, the first is about Satan or Lucifer and the other is about Adam and Eve, the purpose of Milton, which he write on Book I is “Justify the ways of God to Men”, this made it written crucial themes like the marriage and the idolatry.

What’s in our food? What is the difference between a bird’s eye view of a remote vegetable crop and a microscopic swath from a pineapple leaf? How distint is a pile of table salt from miles and miles of icebergs? These were the questions that the artist Caren Alpert made himself, before start his creative travel.

This creative journey give as result Terra Cibus, a series of common food images, view through the microscope, showing what is there, but we usually can’t see, from textures, patterns, at the end the public will can see that different side that is hide behind the usual.

The photos were taken with an electron microscope; to Albert this “seized his interest because of their mystery and simultaneously familiarity””. The process for realize it was a complete science project, Alpert spend the first three months researching the equipment that he will use to took the photos, next the food was dehydrated and the coated with different metals, this process took between 2 and 6 weeks, then start the process of took the photos, hundreds of photos in a few hours and then the process of maximize the food.

Que hay en nuestra comida? Cuál es la diferencia entre una vista panorámica a distancia de un cultivo de hortalizas a la franja microscópica de una hoja de piña? Cuál es la diferencia entre una pila de sal de miles y miles de icebergs? Estas fueron las interrogantes que el artista Caren Alpert se hizo antes de emprender su viaje creativo.

Este viaje creativo dio como resultado Terra Cibus, una serie de imágenes de alimentos comunes, vistos tras el microscopio, mostrando lo que hay, pero que usualmente no vemos, desde texturas, patrones, a la final le muestra al espectador ese lado diferente que se esconde detrás de lo usual.

Las fotografías fueron tomadas con un microscopio electrónico, para Albert esto hizo “que creciera su interés por el misterio sin dejar de parecerle familiar”. El proceso para realizarlo fue todo un proyecto de ciencia, Alpert paso los primeros tres meses investigando los equipos que usaría para tomar las fotos, a continuación los alimentos pasaron por un proceso de deshidratación para luego ser cubiertos con diferentes metales, este proceso por si solo tardo entre 2 y 6 semanas, luego llego el momento de tomar las fotos, cientos de fotos en unas horas y después el proceso de aumento.

For Alpert exist a lot of rhetoricin in our culture around the food, like for example the gourmet journalism, the food history or the food science, that’s why he expects that through this photos, we can see in a better way with what we are nourishing.

And Why the name Terra Cibus?, well, this can be translated as “nurturing from the earth”, and if we look closely this photos seems that instead of food is about a place in the earth, to me this is beautiful, and makes me believe that our food is more than just that, is a piece of the earth in it.

Para Alpert hay mucho retoricismo en nuestra cultura alrededor de la comida, como por ejemplo el periodismo gourmet, la historia de la comida o la ciencia de la comida, por ello espera que a través de estas fotografías, nosotros veamos mejor con que nos alimentamos.

Pero detrás de todo esto, del proceso y de lo que el artista quiere lograr con su obra falta responder a una interrogante Por que el nombre de Terra Cibus?, bueno, este se traduce como “crianza de la tierra”, y si miramos las fotos estas parecieran que en vez de tratarse de comida se tratara de algún lugar en la tierra, para mí esto me parece hermoso, y me hace creer que en nuestra mesa hay mucho más que una simple comida, hay un pedazo de la tierra en ella.

Terra Cibus esta exhibido en el James Beard Foundation en Nueva York.
