PUBLISHER'S NOTE Last month we celebrated all things 'MOM'. This month, it's Dads turn! We took some time to speak with a bunch of local dads of all ages and backgrounds to see what it means to them to be a dad in today's crazy world. Some of the answers surprised, but most I found inspiring. My favorite answers were the pieces of advice they want to impart on their kids. I hope that their words resonate in those young ears! And even better, I loved the advice they were given as they were about to become a dad. New dads should take notes! There are definitely some pearls in this article that all dads could use! 100

birthday HOUSTON ZOO! written by Camryn Wells

If you are a native Houstonian, recently moved to the city or are simply planning a weekend visit, the Houston Zoo is likely on your list of must-see attractions. The zoo started from humble beginnings in the 1920s on a small plot of land in Hermann Park and a single bison named Earl. For decades, the city of Houston ran the zoo, expanding its exhibits to include elephants, wild cats and aquatic creatures. In 2002, the Houston Zoo transitioned into a nonprofit organization, expanding the zoo’s reach in global conservation.

T

oday, the Houston Zoo is a 55-acre zoological park and home to more than 6,000 animal residents from more than 600 species. The zoo is one of the most-attended cultural attractions in the region. The Houston Zoo has undeniably left its impression worldwide, supporting 31 wildlife conservation projects in 16 countries. “Over the last 100 years, as we’ve faced shocks and stresses, the Houston Zoo is still here going strong, not pulling back but continuing to be transformational for the people in our city,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “The Houston

8 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

Zoo exemplifies the resilience of our city.” For this reason, and many others, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced April 30, 2022, to be publicly recognized as “Houston Zoo Day” in the city. Since its inception, the Houston Zoo has put education and community at the front of its mission. Staff and volunteers deliver innovative, fun and inspiring experiences to visitors while providing exemplary animal care, assuring outstanding animal welfare. The Houston Zoo offers over 20 education programs to more than 500,000 participants annually. These experiential programs aid animal lovers of all ages in

expanding their understanding of our collective roles in conserving animals, natural resources and our planet. The zoo has already launched several programs to celebrate its centennial year, including a day-long birthday celebration on April 30, 2022. Houston Zoo president and CEO, Lee Ehmke, spoke to community members and zoo patrons at the historic reflection pool, highlighting the zoo’s most iconic and historical moments of the century. “At one point Hermann Park and the Zoo were one in the same but look at it now,” said Ehmke. “We’re a world-class, zoobased wildlife conservation

organization right here in the heart, and in the hearts, of Houston.” While the Houston Zoo’s 100-year history is impressive and inspiring, Ehmke says there are grand plans for continued growth. “Over the past 100 years, our zoo has seen two world wars, a depression, multiple hurricanes and a pandemic, yet we persevered and have thrived. Today, we’re connecting communities with animals to inspire action to save wildlife. We’ve transformed the zoo to take visitors around the world from the far reaches of South America in our Pantanal exhibit to our very own Texas Wetlands, but we’re far from done.” 9 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

CENTENNIAL SATURDAYS Happening on the first Saturday of every month starting June 4. Activities include special keeper talks, live ice carvings, family-friendly entertainment, and more. Entry is included with general admission and free for members.

So, what’s next for the Houston Zoo? Throughout the year, the centennial anniversary will continue to be highlighted across the city by unveiling several murals of artwork showcasing the zoo’s global conservation efforts. The celebration will extend into 2023 with the grand opening of Galápagos Islands, the first major exhibit of its kind to showcase the remarkable wildlife of the legendary island chain. The Galápagos Islands exhibit will bring the Ecuadorian archipelago and the unique ecosystem— including sea lions, giant

tortoises, sharks, and the Houston Zoo’s first penguin! “Our Galápagos Islands will immerse guests in an environment evoking the archipelago’s unique landscapes and oceanic habitats and highlight how to protect it for the future,” said Ehmke. “Galápagos Islands will add an extraordinary immersive experience to Houston’s worldclass zoo.” The Galápagos Islands is part of the zoo’s historic $150 million Keeping Our World Wild centennial campaign. Like the industry leader and noble steward it is, the zoo is donating

a portion of its birthday money to, you guessed it – wildlife conservation and education initiatives. An anonymous donor committed to matching every gift up to $1.5 million to double the impact of every contribution. By donating at www.houstonzoo.org/match, Zoo supporters will help finish the stunning Galápagos Islands exhibit. “When you look at all of these 6,000 [animal] residents and all of these kids and families that come here we’re not San Diego, we’re not the Bronx we’re not Miami,” says Mayor Turner. “We are

10 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

in Houston, Texas this is the Houston Zoo this is our centennial and I look forward to what happens in the next 100 years to come.” Whether your next visit to the Houston Zoo is during Zoo Boo or TXU Energy presents Zoo Lights, another 100th birthday celebration or simply for summer fun, you’re guaranteed to leave with more knowledge and love for animals than when you arrived. The Houston Zoo will be celebrating its centennial all year long, so visit houstonzoo.org to join the fun!

WILD FACTS ABOUT THE

HOUSTON ZOO

The Houston Zoo’s original name was The Houston Zoological Gardens, and it first opened to the public in April 1922. A deer was donated to the zoo soon after Earl’s arrival to give him an animal friend at his new residence. Hans Nagel became the city’s first zookeeper in 1922 and legend has it, he still checks on his beloved animals in a ghostly way today. “Big John” Glaze was the zoo’s train engineer for 40 years until he retired in 2009. The zoo train was added in 1954, a feature voted on by City Council after seeing the success of a similar train at the San Antonio Zoo. The train was so popular that the zoo extended the tracks to tour all of Hermann Park, not just the zoo. Some of the Houston Zoo’s animal friends are no strangers to fame…or infamy! The zoo’s Coquerel’s sifaka–a type of lemur, appeared on the cover of National Geographic’s April 2016 issue. Other animals have made their mark in history by showing off their wild side. • The Houston Zoo is saving species right here in Texas! In 2005 the Zoo entered an agreement with NASA to build a 2.5-acre Attwater’s prairie chicken breeding facility at Johnson Space Center. A program that continues to this day, helping save this rare Texas bird from extinction. • Through the Zoo’s holiday lights collection program, more than 24,000 lbs. of string lights have been recycled—that the same weight as two adult Asian elephants! • If you want to visit the Zoo but can’t get out to do so, you can check out the giraffes, elephants, rhinos and more through live webcams or tune into the weekly Facebook live series. • In 2015, the Houston Zoo ended the use of plastic bags in its gift shops, eliminating an estimated 80,000 plastic bags from entering landfills and the environment each year, thereby helping to protect animals in the wild. And in 2017, the Zoo went one step further and eliminated sales of single-use plastic water bottles.

Do you have a Houston Zoo story? You can join be a part of the Centennial Celebration! You can submit your stories and photos to the Zoo’s website for a chance to be featured.

Traveling across Texas? Keep an eye out for Black Bears and the Texas black bear reporting signs designed by The Houston Zoo and are used throughout the state. If you only have time for a quick staycation, you can camp out at the zoo overnight. A Houston Zoo membership does more than give you access to Houston’s amazing zoo life. With your membership, you can also get a discount or free admission to over 100 zoos around the country. Member’s get exclusive offers during Member Appreciation Month in August.

DADDY'S H O M E

By Jill Morgenstern

12 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

“Daddy’s home! We’re SAVED!”

“Daddy’s home! We’re SAVED!” my daughter and I shout each evening around seven o’clock. It’s hard to tell whether it’s me or my just-turned-three-year-old who most looks forward to the rumbling sound of the garage door announcing our imminent rescue. But whether dinner plans have gone up in smoke or it’s just been a day in which the “Head of Demolition” has particularly lived up to her name, we meet Daddy’s arrival with much glee, in part because he’s just more fun than I am in so many ways:

1) Daddy RSVPs “yes” to more tea parties than I do.

4) Daddy is more willing to hire a sous chef.

Sure, I’m willing to point my pinky finger for a cup or two, then pretend to gobble everything like Cookie Monster. But that’s about the end of it for me. Daddy on the other hand, is an ever willing tea party participant, able to drink cup after cup, accepting his fate with a grace that the Mad Hatter could never have imagined.

It takes a lot of patience to work with employees who are under five years old. Sometimes I even have that patience! Daddy always has it. He has little time to cook, but when he does he’s happy to have the added chaos of a child’s “help”.

2) Daddy is a willing canvas

Call me a wuss, but barely a day goes by when I don’t whine about one “extreme parenting” injury or another. Being accidentally poked in the eye is almost as thoroughly a part of our bedtime ritual as the nightly picture books. Daddy takes it all in stride, whether he’s initiated the rough behavior or it just comes with the territory.

Only one of us is willing to have our hand painted while trying to get some work done. Guess which one of us that would be?

3) Daddy is a better swim buddy than I am. It’s true that I will drag myself into the pool every single dad-gum day of summer with the reasoning that if you keep a kid wet enough, she will learn to swim. But my motive is clear: entertain the kid while studying water safety. The one who loves to cannonball and splash, float and toss an energetic child into the air? That would be Daddy.

5) Daddy roughhouses.

Daddy’s arrival heralds the restoration of at least a small degree of sanity. With him comes the long awaited dinner, what little adult conversation we can manage to grab between outbursts and demands to “Look at DIS!”, and, most importantly, more fun than we’ve probably had all day!

We spoke with local dads to get their take on the challenges and perks of raising a family in Houston in 2022. What would your answers be if we asked you these questions??

14 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? Balancing life. Work, School, Entertainment, Family time & being a role model for the family What is your favorite thing about being a dad? Being a leader and head of the house, teaching the kids good things about life and doing things right the first time, take pride in whatever you do, and do it whole heartly. What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? As always and just about everyday , be the best you can be , have and show integrity and most of all ALWAYS keep GOD FIRST in everything you do! What is the best piece of advice you were given about being a dad? Take care of your family and do everything in your ability to be a role model and train them up to be respectful and successful. Fabulous Father: Brandon Dotson, 38, Instructor/Technician Dad to (8) Kids - Ages 27- 25- 22- 21- 19- 11- 9- 3

Personal Goal you have yet to meet? Own a Coffee Shop!

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? The challenge that grows as we all grow is the issue of autonomy and independence. I will always see my kids as babies, but in reality, they're young ladies who are growing up and will mature as the years pass. As parents, we have to let them make their own mistakes and it kills me to know that some things don't need to be learned the hard way.

Fabulous Father: Freddy Cruz, 46, Founder of Freddy Cruz Creative Works, host of Freddy's Huge ASK Dad to 2 teenage daughters

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? As scary as it may seem that our kids will grow into fully functioning adults, it's also rewarding. Think about how insanely rare it is to even be a human. Now ponder how on earth a hopelessly fragile little life can blossom into a thriving person (two in my case). While I'd love to travel back in time and steal a snuggle with the toddler versions of my girls, I wouldn't trade the 2022 versions for anything in the world. To speak with and learn from them is incredible. What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? Know your worth before someone imposes their version of it on you. Fabulous Father: Duane F. White, 53, VP Engineering and Consulting ~ Dad to 2 teens (16) and (13)

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? Being able to be with my kids to watch them grow up. Being able to assist with the highs and lows of growing up What is your favorite thing to do with your kids when you have some free time? Playing video and board games What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? Trust in GOD. Give GOD the glory. Always give 100% effort Favorite family vacation spot? Panama and Croatia Favorite family memory? When the chicken poked it’s head out to the bag in Panama

15 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? Watching them grow up and move out of the house on their own. What advice would you give your kids? have fun, be happy, and be kind to yourself and others, your life is not over if you fail and it’s never to late to start over, I received my degree at the age of 55. Best advice you've received? The best advice that I got from my father was to be open minded and take charge of my own life. Favorite vacation spot? As a family, we really enjoy going camping on the Guadalupe River and floating down the ice-cold river in tubes, it has become the family favorite.

Fabulous Father: Michael D. Riccardelli, 56, MIAT Senior A&P Instructor (7) children ages 23-36 & (13) grandchildren ages 3-17

Favorite family memory? When we had our first grandchild, and the family was all there, welcoming the next Riccardelli to the family, that was an amazing feeling of pride when you see your child having a child of their own. To sum it all up, being a father and grandfather was and still is so rewarding and satisfying, that I would do it all over again, without changing a thing.

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? Even though we spend a lot of time together, I would like to spend even more time with my family and kids going on trips & vacations.

Fabulous Father: Nate Cortez, Welder, Retired Marine Dad to Angelina (15) , Janessa (6) and Julius (5)

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? Coming home and having my kids run to the door for HUGE hug and kiss to welcome me home. What is the best piece of advice you were given about being a dad? I always looked up to my dad in a proud and loving way. Family is first. Why do you think Houston is a great place to raise a family? Home is where you make it home. I’ve had the privilege to travel and see most of the united states and the world. I’ve always enjoyed everywhere I’ve been but Houston is home for me, I just feels right. Favorite family vacation spot? The next one. (Disney right now) Fabulous Father: Vesa Koivumaa, 56 Dad to Viviana (11)

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? There is no manual how to be a dad e.g. How do I align my expectations and personality with our daughter’s personality traits. We have lot in common, but I need to learn how to support her development & goals. What is your favorite thing about being a dad? The wonder of discovery with her, it is amazing how much you can learn. What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? Keep the sense of wonder and curiosity. What is the best piece of advice you were given about being a dad? Be brave. Favorite family vacation spot? Our lake house in Finnish wilderness.

16 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? The most challenging part of being of dad so far for me has been accepting that fact that he may not like the same things that I did growing up. What is your favorite thing about being a dad? My favorite part about being a dad is watching Tamir grow and develop into becoming his own person knowing I have major impact and influence on his development. What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? Take your time young man. Don't you rush to get old. What is the best piece of advice you were given about being a dad? The best piece of advice I was given was that no matter how hard you try you cannot force them to be who you want them to be.

Fabulous Father: Terrell Morton, 44, Sales Exec Dad to Tamir (6) and hubby of 15 years to Asante

Why did you choose to raise your family in Houston? I chose Houston as the best place to raise a family because of a number of factors. I love the wide array of Diversity and the affordability to raise a family. Favorite family memory? Either riding a camel or petting the dolphins in Jamaica.

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? Patience. It's so important as a parent, and you need it in large quantities!

Fabulous Father: Tom Herpin, 39, Attorney Dad to Calvin (8) and Daphne (10)

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? Watching their development, seeing them apply lessons and skills you taught them, without any reminder. Seeing parts of you emerge from the kids, even as they develop their own identities. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids when you have some free time? Teaching them to cook and playing games as a family. Cooking is a critical life skill and something we love to do in the house. Games teach kids to think strategically, reading, analysis, and how to handle losing. What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? Enjoy being a kid! Stop trying to grow up! You're going to spend most of your life as an adult, you'll have PLENTY of time for adult worries and responsibilities. Why do you think Houston is a great place to raise a family? Anything you want to do, buy, see (that isn't terrain/climate limited), you can do! The city is so diverse, and I love that my kids are friends with kids who don't look like then, eat different foods, and celebrate different holidays. Favorite family vacation spot? Either the New Mexico mountains, or a beach with clear waters. Either way, a place that gives them freedom to move around. Favorite family memory? Hard to pick just 1, but I love getting to surprise the kids. We try not to tell them about our planned trips and instead wake them up to head to the airport or pick them up early from school. It's the pure joy and excitement on their faces I love seeing.

Special shout out to Grandpa Herpin for his active role in Calvin's life!

17 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? It is because of them that I get to celebrate being dad not just on Father’s Day but every day. I love knowing that to these three kids, I’m their world. I don’t have to be perfect because all they expect of me is to give them unconditional love. I strive to do my best and be my best everyday for them. What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? Having to say no; being the uncool parent. As a father it’s my job to guide them in life to be successful and unfortunately that means saying no which is then followed by attitude, the cold shoulder and snarky looks I’m sure all parents can relate to. What is the best advice you were given about being a dad? From the age 1-10 be the friendly loving parent; let your guard down; from the age 11-18 be a parent, be stern and stand your ground because they will try you; and from 19 on love them as a parent and a friend because they will always need you!

Fabulous Father: Carlos Padron, 36, Tractor Lead Dad to Ethan (16), Jiselle (12) and Olivia (6)

What advice would you like to give your kids? Always live your life to the fullest and be happy. Life is happening all around us and if they don’t stop and enjoy the little things while they can it’s just going to pass them by. I don’t ever want them to feel as though they are just going through the motions of life but actually living it!

What is the most challenging part of being a dad for you? Having too many things to do and not being able to keep up with all of them.

Fabulous Father: Chris Nikirk, 52, Engineer Dad to Thalia (10) and Thomas (9)

What is your favorite thing about being a dad? Wonderful times, small moments, anything we do together. There are so many special moments where we just relax and have fun together. What is your favorite thing to do with your kids when you have some free time? I like playing games with them. What is one piece of advice you would like to give your kids? The difficulty is in just choosing one, but my advice would be to be positive that everything will work out okay. Be confident & be yourself. When I was a young adult, I would worry about all different kinds of things. Be confident in yourself, because some people will like you, and everyone will like you for who you are. That’s no bologna. What is the best piece of advice you were given about being a dad? Well, I remember what my dad told my older brother when he had his first son. He said “James… there’s nothing you have in your house that your kids can’t get into." Favorite family vacation spot? The ones where we have had personal time together. I’m pretty torn between the beach, and Big Bend. But for now, I’ll say the beach. When we go to the beach, we can just relax, we don’t have a schedule or anything. We can just relax together. Favorite family memory? Christmases. There’s so much joy, anticipation, and excitement. Personal Goal you have yet to meet? I want us to be financially independent with our own business. Finish writing my book.

SUMMER

ummer is coming and you know what that means, right? Long, unstructured days punctuated by "I'm bored," and "There's nothing to do." Which really means kids are tired of doing all of the same things and they crave new activities they can feel excited about. This is the perfect opportunity for messy fun to swoop in for the emotional rescue this summer. After all, what could be more festive than a little bit of parent-approved pandemonium?

1. Franken-beauty. Make natural facial masks out of banana, avocado or cocoa. Sit kids around a large table in pairs to take turns applying masks to each other's faces. Be sure to have some hand mirrors handy so everyone can see what all the squeals are about.

IT'S OK TO LET DAD BE RIGHT By Jill Morgenstern

I was seven years old the first time I

had a real babysitting job and 43 when my last baby was born. In between I worked babysat, did daycare, and taught in both public and private schools. That’s over 35 years of reading Parents Magazine, Dr. Spock, What to Expect, various child development textbooks, plus every single book on infants and sleep that has ever been written. And that's not to mention a degree in education. The problem with having that much information invading one’s head is that it does just that. It invades. And despite the fact that even the sleep experts can’t agree with each other, the invading information is always separating the wheat from the chaff. And by chaff, I mean, “Stuff the baby book said you were doing wrong!” The baby books don’t fully disclose which level of Dante’s hell your child will be doomed to wander if you don’t follow their advice, but the subtext is obvious: stick with us or your baby will spend years in therapy. But in all honesty, your baby would probably benefit from a therapist anyway. I mean who wouldn’t? In my mind a better goal is to keep you and Dad out of therapy

“JUST “JUST TAKE TAKE A A NAP. NAP.

DAD DAD HAS HAS GOT GOT IT.” IT.”

34 | HOUSTON FAMILY MAGAZINE June 2022

This I wish I had known: Dad gets to be right too, even if he’s never even laid eyes on a baby book. Dad gets to be right sometimes even when he’s doing things “wrong”. In fact Dad gets to decide whether or not he even reads baby books. You can highlight, bookmark, and photocopy all you want. Personally, I may even have tried buying a DVD and begging Dad to watch it with me. Don’t judge! We were in the throes of the evil colic; it’s amazing we even survived!. Ultimately, Dad still gets to decide whether to watch, read, listen, or throw it all out the window and do his own thing. This I wish I had known: Dad’s “thing” will be different. Dad’s thing may even be downright scary sometimes to a mom who is borderline overprotective even on her best day. But close your eyes, close your ears, and try not to even ask what happened while you got your glorious nap. Because Dad’s thing, while perhaps not fully scripted by your favorite parenting expert, is still one of the sweetest and most wonderful things that will ever happen to your child. And if you let it, it can also be one of the sweetest and most wonderful things that ever happens to you. Because parenting is joyful and gratifying and delicious. But at the exact same time it is difficult, relentless and grueling work. And here is Dad saying, “Go ahead and take a nap! I’ve got this!” Take a nap! Take it, for crying out loud! Because everything will go wrong

Check out your local high schools or community theaters for the most affordable ticket prices that don’t cut short on entertainment value. Main Street Theater, Pearl Theaterand Miller Outdoor Theatre all put on kid-friendly productions throughout the year.

An Interactive, Cultural Experience Express Children’s Theatre is the way to go if you’d rather the show come to you! The touring theater company has been a Houston favorite since 1991 and offers an interactive cultural experience at children’s parties. Aztec Princess is a one-woman show, sharing two Classic Mexican fables told in English and Spanish by a timetraveling Princess. Children are invited to participate in the bilingual performance, which runs about 45 minutes in length and starts at $295. A Book Lover’s Party Paradise Technically, Gulf Coast Cosmos Comicbook Co. isn’t a party venue; however, consider hosting a small and intimate celebration on the deck while supporting a local business. The Black-owned comic book store located in Third Ward has become a beacon of hope for fiction readers, and fans often overlooked in the fantasy world. Once you’ve finished browsing the unique collection of comics, take your party outside to read, eat and celebrate. Animal Parties for Party Animals Take your party to Bayou Wildlife Zoo and bring wildlife to your wild child. Party packages start at $150 and include a 30 to 40 minutes tram ride where you can see and feed many deer, antelopes, buffalos, camels, zebras, and more. Guests are welcome to walk the venue, observe the animals, and enjoy lunch (or birthday cake!) under the covered picnic area. Low Cost, Loads of Fun! Kid parties can be expensive but they don’t have to be! With an open mind and a little creativity, you can find party spots in everyday places. • Take your party to a local park to feed duck (oats, rice, birdseed, and chopped lettuce are all safe options) • Visit your local fire station for a tour then stop and grab ice cream at a local shop! • Head to one of Houston’s 27 local breweries, breweries, many of which are kid-friendly and have plenty of space for little legs to run and play! • Take the kids around the city on the Metro Rail. Rail. For $1.25 per ticket, you can create your own adventures for a few hours through downtown, midtown, The Museum District and more. Think outside of the box and look around the city for your next kid party! Houston offers endless fun and opportunities for unique party experiences. Invite your guests, bring the cake, and let one of our local businesses take care of the rest.
