EDITOR’S NOTE
I
am certain my grandson, who is my first grandchild, is brilliant. We all feel so proud of our grandbabies, I know. And, frankly, in love. With one and a-half years of wisdom behind him, my grandson reminded me during our precious times together over the holidays to “stop and smell the roses,” so to speak. We hunted for rocks, found pretty leaves and wore acorn caps on our heads and balanced them on our noses. And, yes, we saw — and he pointed out — all the flowers on our walks together. I'm making his enthusiasm for the new, as well as the old, my New Year's resolution to be grateful for the world around us. We’re doing the same here at Houston House & Home with our January issue, appreciating adventures statewide and beyond and to visiting glorious local preservation efforts. Our “Historic Destinations” segment takes you from magnificent Big Bend National Park to charming Georgetown to stops in between on a journey to acknowledge the past and the present. Map out your own family adventure following our guide. Locally, walk through a Heightsarea 1909 Queen Anne cottage, once abandoned and leaning, but now beautifully and sensitively renewed — and a recipient of a
2018 Good Brick Award as bestowed by Preservation Houston. A fairy-tale castle in Riverside Terrace also receives our utmost attention. An Art Deco/Old Hollywood beauty, the grand manse shows off elaborate arches, gables, a grove of fruit trees and lavish pool, all surrounded by a stately stone wall. We present “In with the Old” with ideas on how to give creative new purposes to reclaimed wood, antiques and other treasures. “Fab Fabrics” introduces a world of today’s textiles to bring color and texture to your home. “Purple Power” is all about Pantone’s Color of 2018: Ultra Violet. Have fun with this on-trend hue. And for the now and the future: “Recipe” shares healthful delectables and delights at area restaurants, along with instructions on how to make that perfect spaghetti squash casserole. “Gardening” tells how to continue your passion for year-round pleasure, and take our pet of the month, Jose, home with you. And don’t forget to smell the roses. Cheers, Barbara

yards. There, she explored a whole new world. She bought two old wooden columns that were placed strategically for load-bearing support. Smith fell in love with the idea of using reclaimed wood in other areas of her home, too. Finding a source that built furniture and shelves from reclaimed wood served her well. And at an antique store, she found old chicken feeders that now are pendant lights over her eating bar. Weekend jaunts to area shops became routine. One such outing turned up an antique door that she painted and then installed on rails for a sliding bathroom door. In her mudroom, the old wood floor was just too haphazard in look, so she stenciled it. Smith’s salvage ideas have made her home hers, but she isn’t the only one cultivating an eye toward finding new purposes for old things. Thinking outside the box is key. Other homeowners remodeling their circa 1892 home, for example, found a very unique kitchen backsplash — 19th-century clay roof tiles! — at the Galveston Historic Foundation Antique Warehouse.

hen Kate Smith bought her 1940s home in an established neighborhood, she immediately took to Pinterest, shelter magazines (like this one) and other inspirational sources to find ways that would allow her to celebrate the 75-year-old charmer’s historic character. But, at the same time, “dowdy” wasn’t in her vocabulary. She first removed acoustical tiles from above to reveal a plank ceiling. Despite its asymmetrical look, she became immediately smitten with the rustic appeal. The original ceiling and her desire to remove walls for an open-room concept led her straight down a path to salvage 20 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

An old door found at an outdoor salvage yard was painted and placed on rails in the Smith home.
Shelves made from reclaimed lumber are found on either side of the stove, and chicken feeders turned to pendant lights give added personality to the Smith kitchen.
OTHER COLLECTED IDEAS • A barn’s small loft door becomes an interesting kitchen rack for pots and pans. • Fancy Victorian doors have found their way into kitchens to close off the pantry. And other antique doors have reclaimed new life as headboards — and even dining room table tops. • Placing photographs in the various panes of windows, from a century or two past, creates a special display. • Old ceiling tins become canvases for artwork. • Architectural elements hang above doorways or make nice coat/hat racks. • Tall, old shutters transform into doors or wall dividers. • Antique rug remnants — kilims, oushaks — make elegant throw pillows. • Crock pots, urns and tin pitchers transform into lamps. • Large copper bowls become sinks. • Door knobs grace walls as coat or picture hangers. • Old lumber reincarnates into shelves, flooring and furniture. A bathroom vanity base began as rustic lumber pieces at the Smith residence. A vintage frame with a new mirror hangs above.
The Smiths found a former artist’s easel and turned it into a TV stand. 22 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

depth and add zip to this vibrant home on East Shore in The Woodlands. Designer Stel Diaz of Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors collaborated with the homeowner, who is also a designer, to create a tapestry of color and texture throughout this one-of-akind house. “The right fabrics can bring a room to life, evoke emotion and transform a space into a personal haven,” Diaz says. Pleasing to the eye and to the touch, fabrics, whether high-end or budget-friendly, can help you personalize and achieve your dream design. “When we consider fabric selections, we always start with function. Questions like: How will it be used? Where will it be used? How much daily use? How much sun? Are there children or pets?” she says. “Some functions dictate a more durable fabric.”
INSPIRATIONAL COLOR In her consultations with most clients, Diaz recommends they look for personal inspiration in magazines and on websites, but also look at colors in nature and from the art they love. For this house, color was the rule. “We had lots of back-and-forth discussions in our selections. She already thinks outside the box and is not color shy, so we had a lot of fun,” Diaz says. Because the homeowner had lived and traveled in Asia, the rugs and art she acquired there Bright teal velvet sofas bring comfort and color to the fireside living space. 26 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
became the inspiration for the color palette. In the piano room, the two occasional chairs are covered in a basket weave pattern in shades of green, blue and red jewel tones. The colors mirror the artwork and the rug and are repeated in the drapes — and even in the lampshade and chandelier.
CUSTOM DETAILS The chair fabric is “Perkins” by Norbar Fabrics, and the arched drapery panels made by Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors are a poly/cotton by Fabricut. The artwork, “Girl Playing a Piano,” was purchased from an artist in Moscow, and the village scene is from a Vietnamese artist. Wall color is “Tempe Star” by Sherwin-Williams. A wall of windows leading to the main living area is hung with elegant drapery panels handmade by Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors from a light blue floral silk by Jim Thompson and topped with a “Brown Sugar” velvet cuff by Michael Jon Designs. “The main living area in the house is a light blue called ‘SeaSalt’ by Sherwin-Williams, and it creates an ideal backdrop for the pair of vivid teal velvet sofas and coordinating chairs in fabrics called ‘Bushnell’ and ‘Waterleaps,’ all from Sherrill Furniture,” Diaz says. The pillows, also by Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors, are made from Robert Allen Design fabrics.
Two occasional chairs in the piano room are covered in a basket weave fabric in four jewel tones, mirroring the colors in the rug and artwork.
The charming cafe curtains, which define the breakfast area, are made from a beautifully embroidered fabric called “Botanical Garden” by GP & J Baker. The chairs are covered in a red cotton-rayon by Kravet.
SWEET DREAMS In four completely different bedrooms, colors and fabrics take the lead in creating personal and unique environments for the homeowner and her family. In the master, a handsome four-poster bed sports a sea-green comforter and gold Euro shams of 100-percent woven cotton from Texture. Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors made the duvet and shams from a fabric by Duralee with a braid trim by Norbar. Kasmir covers the Euro shams with “Himalaya Flame,” and the tab top curtains on the bedposts are an open-weave casement by Beacon Hill. The “Lace” bedroom is a nod to the feminine with intricate lace

panels from Pindler & Pindler Inc. and a velvet cuff from Kravet fabricated by Woodlands Fabrics & Interiors. The custom bench is also velvet, and the butterfly shade is from a printed cotton fabric called “Ophelia” from Designer’s Guild. The homeowner stenciled the walls, and Phyllis Palmer of Transformations created the floral overlay in the dormer. The daughter’s bedroom is a lively, upstairs room joining an upstairs porch. Its color inspiration comes from a favorite framed Chinese quilt purchased in Beijing. Fabric for the Roman shades is from Fabricate, and the wall color is “Expressive Plum” by Sherwin-Williams.

RECIPE
True Food Kitchen’s Spaghetti Squash Casserole Here’s a fresh take on a warm, bubbling casserole that substitutes spaghetti squash for pasta. Think of it as comfort food without all the calories or “Marvelous Meatless Monday!” If you don’t eat dairy or follow the Paleo diet, just omit the cheese.
Ingredients
1 spaghetti squash 1 large yellow onion, diced 2 large carrots, diced 2 stalks celery, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes 1 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano Pinch of ground allspice 2-5 cloves garlic, chopped 3/4 pound part-skim mozzarella 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese 32 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Method Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the squash lengthwise and place the halves skin-side down in a baking dish with an inch of water. Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 45 minutes or until the squash meat is tender. Heat olive oil in a large skillet and add the onion and carrots, with a little water to prevent sticking. Sauté over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add remaining vegetables with some red pepper flakes and a dash of salt, if desired. Sauté, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are barely tender, for about 10 minutes. Add crushed tomatoes, basil and oregano to taste and allspice. Squeeze in 2 to 5 cloves of garlic. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, grate the mozzarella and Parmesan and set aside. Remove squash from the oven and allow it to cool until you can handle it. Remove seeds with a spoon and squeeze any excess water out of squash meat. Break up the squash meat up into strands with a fork or potato masher. Combine squash well with remaining vegetables in the sauté pan. Add half of the mixture to the base of a large, oiled baking dish. Top with half the cheeses, the rest of the squash and then the rest of the cheeses. Bake for 30 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and slightly browned. Let cool 15-20 minutes before serving. Yield: 6 servings

A 2018 GOOD BRICK WINNER Architect and Homeowner Team Up to Renew an Abandoned Heights Cottage Article by Barbara Canetti Photography by Ben Koush
T
here was just something about that rickety old Heights house: The graceful lines, the wraparound porches, the over-sized lot and the general character of the home. It was abandoned, leaning and probably termite infested. But Genevieve Withers saw something more: She saw potential. And she was spot on! With the help of architect/contractor Ben Koush, this little Queen Anne cottage — named the Blazek House after its original owners — went from a neighborhood blight to an award-winning reconstruction. Their efforts did not go unnoticed, as Preservation Houston recently awarded Withers and her partner James Souza a Good Brick Award for 2018.
GOOD BRICK AWARDS Since 1979, Preservation Houston has presented Good Brick Awards to recognize outstanding local contributions to the preservation, rehabilitation and enhancement of Houston’s architectural and cultural heritage, says executive director David Bush. This modest house in the Houston Heights West Historic District was a good candidate because judges were impressed with the care that went into planning this project, as well as the owners’ commitment to preserving the home’s historic character. 48 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
An award-winning 1905 Queen Anne cottage in the Heights charms the neighborhood after a yearlong restoration. 49
“The new addition complements the historic house, unlike so many projects in the Heights, where the new construction overwhelms the original building,” says Bush. “By maintaining the scale, style and materials of the original house, the renovation succeeds in preserving both the historic character of the Blazek House and the historic character of the neighborhood.”
THE RESTORATION Withers says much of the interior of the house had to be updated or replaced, but so many of the architectural characteristics were preserved. “When it rained, it rained inside the house. It was a wreck, but I fell in love with it. I knew it could be a lovely 50 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
house again, and it is. It just needed a little TL,” she says. Actually, it needed more than a little TLC. Koush says the restoration of the 1909 house was a major undertaking. But what they found inside were intact shiplap walls, which they painted and preserved; dysfunctional sliding pocket doors that needed to be repaired; and floors, doors and transoms that had never been painted or changed but required refinishing and renewing. It took a year, but the end result is amazing. “So much of the house was salvageable. And if something was missing — hardware or molding — we either had it made to match or found replacement parts,” says Koush. “We were very excited by this project that we could celebrate this house still being there.”

DETAILS The living and dining rooms required a minimal amount of work, mostly replacing windows and refinishing the walls and floors. The kitchen, however, needed the most attention because nothing from the original could be rescued. But it was redesigned with a nod to the character of the house while using modern materials and making it suitable for today’s needs. One of the exterior porches was enclosed and converted into a master bathroom with a stand-alone tub and glasswalled shower. Large windows and a skylight pour natural light into the room. A mudroom was also built in this space,

and then a new porch was erected in the rear of the house facing north. The second bedroom was transformed into a study, again utilizing the old shiplap wood walls. Withers notes many people are afraid to reutilize the old wooden walls because of age-old scars and rusty nails on them. “Paint the wood with oil-based paint and the nails won’t rust and the walls will look great,” she says. Insulation was blown in behind the shiplap, making the house more energy efficient. A wide center hallway was converted into a makeshift library, with floor-to-ceiling shelves lining the walls. “I had to make use of this space. I have so many books!” she says.

SENSITIVE CHANGES
A structurally unsound workshop/garage in the back that was constructed in the 1950s and a total disaster was torn down. The driveway was moved from the southeast side of the property to the northwest side, and a large carport was erected, with an adjoining office/guest quarters and bathroom. This corner property, fairly large for the Heights at 8,200 square feet, left lots of room for a garden and landscaping, which are still in the works. Koush says the house required a structural engineer to assist in the reconstruction because so much was wrong with the house. “It is a rare survivor among super-sized new houses and overwhelming additions,” says Koush. “The rehabilitation of the Blazek House demonstrates how a small house (1,322 square feet) can be sensitively reconfigured for modern living without destroying its historical character. As such, it’s a model for other homeowners seeking to rehabilitate similar houses in the Heights and throughout Houston.” The master bathroom was created where a side porch once stood.

FAIRY-TALE CASTLE Restored 1930s Mansion in Riverside Terrace Remains an Art Deco Jewel Article by Marsha Canright Photography by Doris Willcox from Emomedia
T
he French Provincial-style manor house rises like a fairy-tale castle on a third-acre lot situated on Riverside Drive, east of the Texas Medical Center and Hermann Park. Built of cream-colored natural stone and brick with a turret of limestone travertine, the 4,600-square-foot house is a majestic survivor in historic Riverside Terrace where old oaks line the streets. Houston architect Lenard Gabert designed the house in 1930 for Robert S. Jarett, a wealthy department store owner. It’s an Art Deco beauty with elaborate arches, gables, handsome copper gutters and a red brick driveway. “The Sakowitz family lived next door, and Joseph Finger's impressive Wesley West House, unfortunately long gone, was across the street,” says Georgina Key, who owns the castle with her husband.
FIRST ENCOUNTER Key says her knees actually buckled when she stepped through the exterior wall and into the courtyard for the first time. “It was like a secret enclave, so private, and I fell instantly in love,” she says.

Graceful arches and original casement windows are Art Deco details; the Steinway piano came with the house. 59
The large downstairs rooms have wonderful acoustics and space for entertaining.
The house was in better shape than many of the homes she had seen. It still needed considerable attention. Key, who owns george + lulu, an interior design and staging company, was not afraid of a fixer-upper. “There are still moments when I can't believe it's ours; it truly is my dream home, and my husband loves it, too,” she says. “I think he was stunned when I told him they accepted our offer, although at this point in our long marriage, he knows when I set my mind to something, it usually happens.”
THE PROJECT Key was eager to tackle such a challenging project, a new adventure, which included hand-restoring 50 sets of original casement windows. The hardware was long gone, but Adkins Antique Hardware carried solid brass fittings that fit perfectly

— a lucky find. Initial restoration and updating took about seven months. For those who love Art Deco architecture and fine-tuned craftsmanship, this house is something to see. It’s roomy, but not over-the-top. There are 16 rooms on two floors with 10foot ceilings, in addition to a fully converted attic, which serves as a private suite for their oldest son. The bones of the house are Art Deco/Old Hollywood, but Key’s personal design style is more eclectic and soulful. Matching styles from a single source is not her approach. “I believe in authentic interiors that reflect the life you’ve lived; it’s a record of landscapes and experiences, a dialogue between your past and present,” she says. “I appreciate a little juxtaposition, patina and wabi sabi.” The interiors are personalized, but family members respect the original architecture and are diligent in its care.

GRAND ENTRY & MORE
ART DECO DETAILS
The palatial entry with its domed ceiling houses a sweeping grand staircase with an ornate wrought iron railing. Beyond the entry are the formal living and dining rooms, a study and music room, a downstairs powder room, the informal family room, a kitchen with oversized pantries and a laundry room with an old-style foldout ironing board. Upstairs are three bedrooms with baths, a library and a second-floor sunroom, which Key uses as a studio. The house also has a large garage apartment and a basement. “All the walls are original plaster, and there is decorative molding in the formal living and dining rooms,” Key says. The molding has original picture rails that the couple uses to display their art collection, including works by local artists; Mary Lawton is a favorite. There are more paintings by family members mixed with vintage finds. The house also has arched doorways and ceilings that vary in style.
“There are so many details, it’s hard to mention them all, but the Art Deco tiles in the upstairs bathrooms perfectly reflect the period,” Key says. The pink and green tiles were discovered beneath a carpet. The first-floor powder room has Cole & Sons hummingbird wallpaper and a bead board ceiling with egg and dart molding. It also has an original stained glass door. An elegant wall-sized marble and plaster fireplace anchors a living room that would be a setting for “The Great Gatsby,” and one bedroom has etched glass Art Deco pocket doors. The kitchen has original black-and-white wall tile with granite floors and countertops, as well as original cabinetry. Now updated with Bosch and Thermador appliances, the kitchen retains two large walk-in pantries. The couple’s youngest son has his own baking business and one pantry is entirely his domain.

FAVORITE SPACES “My favorite space in the house depends on the time of day and occasion,” Key says. “The library is my sanctuary when I want time alone because it’s quiet, removed, small and intimate, and I can be surrounded by our books, which I treasure.” Key has a master’s degree in English; her husband, in philosophy; and their oldest son is studying English and creative writing at the University of Houston. All are avid readers. “I gravitate towards novels, but I’m currently dipping into Tony Hoagland’s poetry. I recently finished “Spill Simmer Falter Wither” by Sara Baume, a young Irish writer who experiments with language. Also, Emma Donoghue’s 64 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
new one, “The Wonder,” and “Grace” by Paul Lynch,” she says. The upstairs sunroom is also a favorite with early morning sunlight streaming through the windows, and the formal living room has excellent acoustics for music and space for entertaining guests. Key was born in England and moved to Houston in her teens. “I still feel very English, and that affects my style and approach in countless area of my life,” she says.
THE GARDEN Her husband is Filipino, which she says creates an interesting mix of cultures for the couple. Their garden is a source of delight.

RIVERSIDE TERRACE Before buying the Riverside house, the couple lived for 15 years
“We have a mini-crepe myrtle orchard in the back, and we planted fruit trees when we moved in about two years ago,” she says. “In our last house in the Heights, my younger son grew what started as a tiny stem and became an enormous grapefruit tree. “He asked if we could take it with us, which was obviously not an option. So I promised him that we'd plant a new one. Now we have a grapefruit, a lemon and an orange tree.” 66 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
in the Heights where they enjoyed getting to know neighbors. That’s also a perk of Riverside Terrace. “It’s quiet and peaceful and our neighbors are absolutely wonderful,” Key says. “There are lots of families who have lived here for generations mixed with young couples starting out and lots of creative types: Musicians, artists, actors, directors. One of our neighbors has a huge fancy Christmas party each year, and we all get dressed up in black tie and enjoy each other’s company.” Riverside Terrace was developed inside the loop during the late 1920s, primarily as an enclave for wealthy Jewish families who were not welcome at that time in River Oaks, such as the Weingarten, the Sakowitz and the Finger families. When this house was built in 1930, Houston was a center of wealth, growth and opportunity largely shielded from the worst effects of the stock market crash that rocked much of the nation. With almost 300,000 residents, it was the largest metropolitan area in the state. More than 40 oil companies were located in the city, and the port was the nation’s 8th largest.

Don't worry about cool temps, freezes or even snow when keeping your place looking sharp. Try these evergreens for year-round beauty. • Blue Point Juniper • Italian Cypress • Arizona Cypress • Eleagnus • Dwarf Youpon Holly • Green Mound Juniper • Wax Myrtle This list is far from all-inclusive, as there are dozens more 74 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
species that will never be damaged by a freeze in Houston. For more carefree and certainly more colorful winter choices, try these selections. Again, this is a short list, with many more options available. • Cyclamen • Mustard • Kale/Cabbage • Alyssum • Viola/Pansy • Lobelia • Dusty Miller Remember, every inch of your garden does not need to be filled with plants.

Try colorful pottery containers, statuaries, fountains or garden benches for a dramatic look all year. There are plant species for every location, be it sunny, hot and dry or shady and damp. Some plants will love it there. HI! MY NAME IS JOSE! I’m a 2-year-old Terrier/Collie mix found during Hurricane Harvey and brought to the Houston SPCA. No owner ever came forward to adopt me, so I’ve been waiting patiently for more than three months for a family. I’m a very active young dog, so I will definitely need a family who is willing to take me on adventures and keep me busy and exercised. I prefer interaction and not to be left outside to entertain myself. I must say: I have an adorable, personable demeanor — and I love people! I do have heartworm disease but, fortunately, the Houston SPCA and VCA animal hospital cover the cost of my treatment MALE • ID#347461 • Two Years Old • Terrier/Collie Mix
The Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to make choosing your adoption option as easy as possible! 78 house& home | January 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
