editor’s note

E

ver so often Mother Nature has to show Houstonians just how “semi” our semi-tropical climate is. She put on quite a show during The Deep Freeze this January. I have several black crispy shrubs to remove at home, and our office garden took quite a hit. We assigned stories for our Landscape Planning Special Issue long before The Deep Freeze, but now they seem especially relevant as everyone looks for replacement plants. I love Suzie Fischer and Mike Gibson’s list of 29 plants that do well in Houston gardens and will have it in hand when I visit the garden centers this spring. David Morello’s story and sketch on the importance of planning your garden before you plant is very helpful, along with a host of other stories full of tips and ideas. And now suddenly it feels like spring and planting season. With the change in the season comes personal change for me. This will be my last issue at the magazine as I am taking medical leave to address some health issues. I’ve been privileged to sit in the editor’s chair here for almost eight years, and what a joy my work has been. A special thanks to owners of the mag-

azine Mike Harrison and Tim Beeson for this privilege. Mike not only knows how to found and run the business of the magazine, he recently won an international dance competition and is currently enjoying rock star status. Tim knows how to guide a magazine through stormy waters while keeping the coolest head imaginable. I admire his nerves of steel. Thanks to Associate Publisher Susie Reisenbigler for supporting my editorial work and for always having a Golden Retriever on hand here at the office for instant affection and stress relief. Thanks to Shrek Beeson, the funniest MiniDachschund on the planet for all the laughs. And thanks to all my coworkers for being terrific to work with. The immensely talented writer and editor Sandra Cook will serve the magazine as editor starting next month. Sandra and I used to work together at the old Houston Life, and you’ve read her house features for House & Home many times over the last eight years. Most of all, dear readers, thank you for being there and picking up the magazine. May your homes always be filled with peace and love.

Mary and Tom called me because they wanted to update their formal living and dining rooms at minimal cost. They liked the fact that I work with what clients have instead of starting over. Before we met, Mary had dutifully pulled photos from magazines of rooms that she liked. “I didn’t want to make costly mistakes and didn’t want to toss out everything that we had. We wanted a timeless, fresh look, with color and design choices that would last and not look ‘trendy’,” Mary explained. It had been a number of years since the couple had removed the wall between the dining and formal living rooms, and at that time, Mary had tried different paint swatches on the wall. She chickened out, playing it safe by painting the walls off white. This is what a lot of my clients do—play it safe with light beige walls, light carpet and the same window treatments they had before. Yawn. “I knew the floral look was outdated and with the light walls and carpet the room felt cold,” Mary said. She admits that having white carpet under the dining table made her feel anxious when they entertained and she was really glad when I recommended putting one practical floor throughout the entry, dining, living room, den and kitchen. “I wanted warm, casual, comfortable and timeless rooms, but didn’t know how or where to start,” Mary explained. In a traditional formal room, it is even more important to

Mary showed me one photo of a room that she loved, and was excited to learn that most of her furnishings could be rearranged, reupholstered and reused. In order to achieve a magazine > look, a lot of simplifying and decluttering must take place before adding any new elements. She was delighted that her

diy decorating window sheers could be recycled and that we would not only work with the blue armchairs, but actually create an entire color scheme around them. By the end of our first meeting, Mary was feeling very comfortable with what we had decided upon. The sofa and wing chair would be recycled with new fabric, a Malika Pottery Barn wool area rug would be added on top of new Armstrong Grand Illusions Cherry Bronze flooring from Forsyth Floor Co. and the dining room furniture kept. A Ballard Designs.com cord cover would be added to the existing chandelier and Tom would rub paint on the mirror with Modern Masters Metallic Paint Collection paint (“English Brown”) and hang the mirror vertically. Artwork, family pictures and lamps were moved to different rooms. We also agreed to add solid curtain panels on each side of the existing sheers, new curtain rods and set up another time to shop for fabric at Interior Fabrics. I suggested they buy a casual Square Head floor lamp from Target to place beside the formal sofa. While Mary had paper and pen out to write notes, I assured her it was not necessary because I would write everything down and allow her to instead listen and ask questions. The notes, drawings and sources then allowed Mary not only to discuss the meeting details with her husband, but also to take them with her shopping.

trade secrets • Think “green”—painting an existing mirror and reupholstering seating instead of buying new repurposes them and saves money, too. • Paint consistently gives the most “bang for your buck.” • Think outside the box. A new Ballard Designs.com chain cover can transform an already-paid-for chandelier for pennies on the dollar. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to buy more furniture and accessories for your home, but to first rethink the pieces that are already paid for.

20

AFTER: The dining room was updated by adding new flooring and simple curtain panels, moving a pair of dining chairs on each side of the sideboard and adding a chain cover to the chandelier. BEFORE: Dated, swagged window treatments, too many dining chairs around the table and a bare chandelier chain made the room feel quite formal.

The cylindrical legs of this table create a powerful silhouette and place it firmly in the pantheon of 20th century design. The writing surface features a series of book matched walnut panels placed to emphasize their graphic impact.

Do you have a heart full of emotion and want to find the best way to express it? Why not write your love letter, poem or note on an antique desk or writing table? It may provide just the inspiration you’re looking for.

“When you sit down at an antique desk, you get a different feeling because so many hands, pens, pencils have been there before,” says Geoffrey Westergaard, president of Carl Moore Antiques. “You can see the places that were rubbed by a forearm draped in lace or wearing a tweed jacket, the ink stains, the ink blots—all the indentations and marks that have accumulated over time. What we respond to emotionally is the knowledge that we’re not the first person to sit there. We sense that continuity of emotion, especially when we’re writing letters full of feeling.” Connie Blakeman, staff member at Antique Pavilion, calls it “the warmth of age.” She says, “You feel the history of an antique piece, even if you don’t know exactly what that history is. It feels wonderful to me.” Antique desks and writing tables can be found in a wide range of styles. Blakeman suggests a few—Federal, Regency, Victorian and Art Nouveau. She also points out that decorative metalwork sometimes distinguishes a desk. “We currently have signed Ormolu on desks in the Louis XVI style. Ormolu metal ornamentation began in the 18th century and is often found in the shape of scrolls, leaves and faces.”

From the Front Lines: The handwritten vs. digital wars Stores and advertisements are filled with the latest digital widget, but do not discount the impact of a simple handwritten note or letter. In fact, some business coaches are saying that handwriting, even on the envelope, is a good way to get noticed these days. A handwritten letter has several advantages. It is tactile and permanent. It shows the writer cared enough to spend time and energy crafting something personal. And you know it’s personal since a handwritten note cannot be massproduced. So, whether it is for business, love or pleasure, consider handwriting an old-fashioned letter. Who knows? You may be remembered (and chosen) because you came up with something new.

LEFT: At The Antique Pavilion, a parquetry and inlaid writing table with a single drawer. Louis XVI style, France, circa mid-19th century.

When shopping for antique furniture, Westergaard points out that the nuances of terminology are important. A “period” piece is one that was actually made in the specified timeframe. For example, a Louis XV period table was made when Louis XV actually sat on the throne of France. A piece of furniture is called “in the style of” when it uses the same design and materials of a particular period, but was made after the era had expired. Further, it can be called an antique if it has the proper age. For example, a writing desk made of walnut with curved legs can be in the style of Louis XV and also an antique if it was made, say, 50 years after Louis XV’s death. A third category is a “reproduction,” which is a piece of furniture that has the lines of a particular design era, but was made in a factory. Westergaard says, “These pieces are made very exactly. There is no evidence of hand quality.” Education is your best friend when purchasing antiques. “It costs nothing to go into a store filled with really fine things. Talk to good dealers and people with good reputations. Your pleasure in your purchase will only increase with how much you know about it and the time you took to learn more,” Westergaard encourages. 24

The Value of Letters

resources CARL MOORE ANTIQUES

No one will deny that letters have sentimental value—but sometimes they have monetary value as well. In 1999, the 14 love letters that the reclusive author J.D. Salinger wrote to Joyce Maynard sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $156,000.

713.524.2502 www.carlmooreantiques.com

THE ANTIQUE PAVILION 713.520.9755 www.crane.com

In a less rarified vein, Crane & Co.—the fine stationery company that is owned by the seventh generation of the same family, making it a sort of antique itself—recently ran a contest celebrating handwritten letters. In sharing their personal letters, participants made comments such as, “I have every single letter my husband has ever sent me since we began dating 25 years ago” and “After he died I slept with it [the letter] folded under my pillow for years. This is the only letter my father ever wrote to me and I have saved it lovingly for 17 years." You really can’t put a price tag on something like that.

GET ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS! BLU SHIELDS CONSTRUCTION and the EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION television crew paid an unexpected visit to Larry and Melissa Beach and their 13 children at 1013 Delesandri Lane in Kemah,TX. After 7 days, 106 hours, thousands of volunteers, a 6,300 square foot home, and one very excited family; the Extreme Makeover in Kemah is a wrap. Come listen to Blu and his crew talk about their amazing building techniques at the Home and Garden Theater. Blu will speak on Saturday at 2:30PM and again on Sunday at 1PM.

Blu Shields (left) and Patrick Henderson

TRU BLU For more than 35 years, Texas City resident Blu Shields has successfully owned and operated Galveston Service Company, offering a wide variety of construction and remodeling services to many satisfied area homeowners. With a vision to change the philosophy of custom homebuilding, his ultimate challenge is to unite all builders as one while bringing together all county and city emergency management teams so that communities throughout the entire United States can be rebuilt. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, Blu formed Blu Shields Construction as a division of Galveston Service Company and Energy Solution Homes to specialize in the new construction of raised-floor homes ideally suited to our coastal community. We are the only builder in this part of the country building highly energy efficient homes (without solar or wind generated power) that produce very low electric bills. In addition, our affordable, high quality homes are typically completed in 30 to 45 days, are built below the average construction cost, and meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards for accessible design. We offer a selection of 15 basic floor plans, any of which can easily be customized as you wish. Blu himself is intimately involved in the construction of every home from start to finish and stands true to his word, accompanied by a solid shake of your hand. Drawing on our expertise as time and materials specialists, Blu Shields Construction is able to complete a new home from ground-breaking to move-in in significantly less time than other builders. We use our own crews exclusively, stack the trades to enable functions that are typically done separately to instead be completed concurrently, and have been building green long before the practice became popular.

Marburger Farm Spring 2010 Pre-Show Peek

Adver tisement

Country setting, world-class antiques, Mar. 30th – April 3rd in Round Top Theme: What’s unique about the Marburger Farm Antique Show? Just about everything. First, the merchandise is cutting-edge, fusing quality with hip. Second, the show attracts an abundance of younger shoppers. For the upcoming spring show, we’ve noticed that the dealers at Marburger Farm are getting younger too. At age 29, Dakota Pratt will come from Los Angeles for his fourth year at the twice-yearly Marburger Farm Antique Show. Coming with him will be the folk art and furniture that he creates from antique tractor springs, vintage bottle caps and other reclaimed industrial fragments. Exhibitor Kim Hoegger of Kim Hoegger HOME in Dallas will bring garden antiques, including architectural concrete planters and statues, as well as her younger perspective on the appeal of antiques. “I don’t buy an antique because it’s 18th or 19th century,” she says. “I buy it because it appeals to me and because I love it and I know my customers are going to love it. I think that younger dealers focus on the look of something, not the history. If it is beautiful and useful and clients can appreciate it for being gorgeous—that’s enough for me.” Dealer Brandon Nelson of Three Oaks, Michigan agrees. “I’m all over the map in terms of periods. I respond to things visually and viscerally. While I’ll bring some fabulous production pieces, I’m especially drawn to one-of-a-kind, out-of-step pieces. For the spring show, Nelson will offer a primitive carved maple head, about 100 years old, with, he says, “a stunning presence.” His booth will include industrial antiques, advertising signs, architectural salvage and Americana mixed with mid-century modern.

Other youthful themes....an antique show with a Facebook, Twitter and YouTube presence….the youthful owners of the show… the emphasis on finding the most adventurous and creative dealers anywhere and giving them time and space to create displays of antiques that inspire and delight shoppers of all ages.

SHOW DETAILS The Marburger Farm Antique Show opens Tuesday March 30 for early buying from 10 am until 2 pm, when regular admission begins and runs through 5 pm that day. Shopping continues on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 am until 5 pm and on Saturday, April 3, from 9 am until 4 pm. For ticket information, maps, special events and photos, see www.roundtop-marburger.com

’d Turn Back If I Were You”, the sign warned as Dorothy and her crew approached the haunted forest and the witches castle. HOUSTON HOUSE & HOME MAGAZINE

ark Twain said, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable ones, then starting on the first one.

M

Your first task after you have found the perfect garden designer is the design phase. It's your blueprint for getting started with your project and culminates with the plan drawing. Le Corbusier, the famous architect and designer who dedicated himself to providing better living conditions for people said "Space, light and order - those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep." The design phase is all about order and space planning and is vital to getting a project off to the right start and keeping it on track. When done properly, it saves everyone time, money and frustration and provides more options. For instance if you want to install in phases then it's absolutely necessary. Producing a great garden plan requires much thought and planning and all the thinking takes place during the design phase. A good garden designer won't let you rush through it. Because there are many more aspects to garden design than most people realize, the possibilities are endless. Arbors, gazebos, pergolas, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, landscape lighting, retaining walls, pools, spas, pathways, putting greens, fire features, irrigation and drainage, trellises, awnings, and fencing, are just the beginning of your options when it comes to an outdoor garden room. The garden plan is the place to record and organize all of your thoughts wishes and dreams. The garden designer uses the plan to easily convey his ideas to the client as well as to predict the project cost. That's the all important purpose of the plan drawing. But it's only the tip of the iceberg. Always drawn to scale, the plan drawing illustrates the finished product complete with architecture, hardscaping, flora and fauna. In the hands of a capable artist, the rendered plan is, in and of itself, a work of art. Most people realize that your garden is an extension of your home and it reflects your personality. But what they don't realize is that when it's done properly, with the help of a seasoned professional to guide you and make certain all aspects of the plan are thought through then executed correctly, your garden or garden room will appeal to anyone including the next owner - regardless of the style. That not only makes your new garden room a tangible investment according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, the proper landscaping can add 20 percent or more to a home's resale value - but a place where you'll want to spend

as much, or more time, than your indoors. If your goal is a beautiful garden room, then solid garden plans, and the services of a talented garden designer, are definitely worth the investment and time they require. A garden designer is someone who enjoys and understands the merging of art and science into a display of beauty that relates to the buildings, with nature and that functions as intended. Form always follows function and the designer uses his creativity to develop a harmonious and aesthetically peaceful area. In other words, a living breathing functioning work of art that not only provides joy but also contributes to our blue planet by helping to clean the air we breathe among other benefits. Find one who is comfortable working with every different style imaginable. Hiring a garden designer who is also a garden contractor as well as a care provider is a smart consideration. Using one professional team for your project from start to finish has advantages. Design professionals experienced in construction and garden care develop designs that are practical. Contractors who are sensitive to design are better builders. And consider this: Once your project is complete who better to care for your garden then they who designed, built and know it best? Take all the time you need to seek out the very best design professionals and contractors and experiment with several layouts or schematics until you find the one that is just right for you. Ask to look at your designers body of work usually in the form of photographs. Past, current and future projects can be examined. Gardeners love to share their fruits of their labor with others and the more of their work that you see the better the decisions you will make. Unearth the exact materials you want and don't over look the tiniest of details as they will bring you the most pleasure and joy, long after your garden is finished. Dorothy found her way to Oz because she had a good plan - follow the yellow brick road. Did she encounter pitfalls along the way? Plenty. Did she overcome them? Yes and you will too with an experienced professional as navigator and a garden plan as roadmap. Trust the judgment of the designer that you carefully chose and lastly, don't forget to have fun along the way. Producing then executing the garden plan should not wreak emotional havoc. Be certain to relax along the way and enjoy every last minute. It's the most important part. It's the most important part.

LANDSCAPE PLANNER 2010 GRASSES

Know Your

A variety of decorative grasses, long and short, thrive in Houston. In West Houston, woodfern on the left and mondo grass on the right dance in the breeze and bring movement to this landscape by McKinnon Associates. American holly trees pruned in cone shapes form an allée for a gravel walk.

STYLE

our landscape should complement the style of your home. For example, a stately stone home with Palladian arches cries out for a formal garden with closely clipped shrubs, trimmed trees and well-tended lawns. A low-slung mid-century ranchhouse looks swell with exotic grasses as accents or perhaps a Japanese Zen garden for ambience.

Y

Whether you’re starting from scratch or redoing a landscape, consider hiring a professional designer for the master plan. Google “landscape designers + Houston” or check the Yellow Pages for landscape designers and look for members who use the initials “ASLA” behind their names, which means they are members of and meet the professional standards of the American Society of Landscape Designers. Also, many nurseries and plant retailers employ designers who can design and implement an overall scheme for you. Ask to see designers’ portfolios

and/or Web sites to see if their work is a fit for what you want. Choose a style that’s sustainable for the way you and your family live. If you want a manicured formal garden but aren’t willing to hire professional landscape help and can’t do it yourself, you won’t be able to achieve the look you want. But when your landscape and house do blend in harmony — and you can’t imagine one without the other — you have added enormous value to your home and pleasure to your soul. Here are some types of landscapes to consider. GULF COAST TROPICAL LANDSCAPE On Galveston Island, this tropical landscape by Mark McKinnon of McKinnon Associates is made possible with raised planters to create perfect drainage for aloes, agaves and herbs. The planters also serve as seating in the garden. Photo by Jill Hunter

FORMAL LANDSCAPE

ENGLISH COUNTRY GARDEN

POCKET URBAN GARDEN

Formal landscapes celebrate order, symmetry and balance. For this mansardroofed classic French-style home, Houston landscapers Thompson + Hanson have designed a crisp landscape of carefully pruned shrubs and contained groundcover in a muted palette. The lawn is meticulously kept.

Rough hewn stones form a curvy border for this English Country style garden by Norm Arnold of Glorious Gardens Inc. Many English plants won’t thrive in Houston’s heat; Arnold substitutes plants suited to Houston’s climate to get the lush color palette of England’s fabled gardens. Here, masses of blooming perennials and annuals in happy colors bring vibrance to a Houston yard.

The tiny entry to a townhouse in urban Houston has just enough room for soaking pool and spa. Equisetum and bamboo provide the greenery in this mini-landscape by McKinnon Associates.

MIKE GIBSON AND SUSAN FISCHER

ever ask gardeners to list their favorite plants unless you’re loaded with NoDoz or have a strong cup of Joe within reach. After all, we’re gardeners, we like plants, not just a few — lots of them. And, we tend to treat them like children, highlighting their attributes while downplaying their shortcomings.

N

After coming out of one of the worst winters in recent memory, one in which we experienced a number of hard freezes and a dusting of snow, it may, however, be an appropriate time to share a few outstanding performers for Houston area gardens, in case you need to make some spring replacements.

duces highly fragrant, delicate flowers from spring through fall, and even into winter if temperatures are mild. In addition to filling the garden with their heavenly scent, the white flower spikes attract butterflies. Its gray-green foliage has a fine texture and the tree thrives in full sun but can adapt to partial shade.

TREES

KUMQUAT Fortunella spp. We haven’t found a citrus we don’t like, because there is nothing about them not to like. Citrus are small evergreen trees, usually 15 to 20 feet tall, perfectly suited as screen or shade trees in the urban garden. Intensely fragrant flowers appear in spring and early summer and sporadically throughout the year. They attract the Giant Swallowtail butterfly, provide an excellent habitat for songbirds, and produce an abundance of mouth-watering fruit loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. Unlike other fruit trees, citrus do not require a full day of sun. Kumquats are particularly well suited for lazy gardeners as they are the hardiest of the citrus, surviving temperatures in the teens. They are also smaller than most citrus so are easily grown in containers. The fruit of kumquats are small and prolific, which makes the tree highly ornamental as it remains on the tree months after ripening.

LACEBARK ELM Ulmas parvifolia Lacebark Elm is a deciduous shade tree with a rounded crown that grows 40 to 50 feet high. It is relatively fast growing, but is still a strong tree, unlike Ashes and Tallows. Its fine foliage provides a filtered shade allowing for good growing conditions beneath it, unlike many Oaks and Magnolias. The bark peels in large flakes in a mosaic pattern, exposing a cinnamon-colored underbark. ALMOND VERBENA Aloysia virgata Almond Verbena is a semi-evergreen tree with an upright growth habit to 15 feet. It pro-

PINEAPPLE GUAVA Feijoa sellowiana Pineapple Guava is an evergreen shrub that I prefer to use as a small, usually to 15 feet, multitrunked or single trunk tree. It has beautiful blue-green foliage that is silvery underneath. Appearing in late spring, the flowers are quite exotic with fleshy white petals that are edible and prominent fuchsia stamens. The edible fruit is egg-shaped with waxy graygreen skin, a juicy greenish-white pulp and a tropical taste. VITEX Vitex agnes-castus Vitex, like Crape Myrtle, is a large shrub, 15 to 20 feet tall, that is usually grown as a multi-trunked tree. Its aromatic foliage is greygreen with a lighter underside and resembles that of a Marijuana plant. Thankfully, law enforcement agencies can tell the difference. The violet to dark purple, fragrant flowers appear in cycles of striking displays from late spring to fall.

SHRUBS PRIDE OF BARBADOS Caesalpinia pulcherima Pride of Barbados is a root hardy, subtropical, multi-stemmed shrub that grows 4 to 6 feet. During hot summer months it is topped with large panicles of bright orange and yellow that are 8 to 10 inches tall and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. This Texas SuperStar shrub needs good drainage and full sun. DWARF BOTTLEBRUSH Callistemon citrinus 'Little John' This dense, mounding evergreen shrub has aromatic foliage that provides a unique blue-green color to the garden. From summer to fall, tips of the stiff branches are covered with flower terminals that have long crimson colored stamens giving them that "bottlebrush" look. It grows to a height of 3 feet, which makes it ideal for the urban garden. It performs best in full sun. BUTTERFLY BUSH Buddleia davidii Butterfly Bush not only attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, but also fills the garden with a clean fresh scent. It is a large shrub that

grows 4 to 6 feet tall with gray-green foliage. There are many cultivars that provide a myriad of bloom colors throughout the summer, from white to purple, pink, blues and red. My favorite is Lochinch which is lavender blue with an orange center. Butterfly bush likes full sun and a well-drained soil and is relatively drought-tolerant. PROSTRATE PLUM YEW Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Prostrata' Prostrate Plum Yew is an evergreen shrub that grows 3 feet tall with a 5 foot spread and forms a low mound of gracefully arching branches. It’s a slow grower that requires little if any pruning, making it ideal for the small garden. The needle-like, dark green foliage prefers light to moderate shade and gives it a woodsy fern-like texture.

ROSES PERLE D’OR Rosa sp. ‘Perle d’Or Perle d’Or is a peach colored Polyantha rose that grows 3 to 4 feet. This repeat bloomer has a double flower that is highly fragrant. In 2007 it was named “EarthKind Rose of the Year.” EarthKind Roses are put through rigorous testing before being deemed environmentally responsible plants for the use in Texas landscapes. BELINDA’S DREAM Rosa x ‘Belinda’s Dream Belinda’s Dream, the first rose to be become a Texas SuperStar, is also designated as an EarthKind rose. Its fragrant double pink flower has the classic Hybrid Tea form but the shrub displays the characteristics of an antique rose — tough, hardy, pest and disease free. It grows 4 to 5 feet tall and it is flush with flowers from spring through fall. BUFF BEAUTY Rosa sp. ‘Buff Beauty’ Buff Beauty is a Hybrid Musk that grows 6 to 8 feet or taller if trained as a climber. The fragrant flowers are double, apricot colored and large —3 to 4 inches across. It blooms spring through fall. JEANNE D’ARC Rosa sp. ‘Jeanne d’Arc’ Jeanne d’Arc is a Noisette rose that grows 6 to 8 feet and is easily

trained as a pillar or climbing rose. The small white double flower is highly fragrant and appears prolifically spring through fall and also creates a delightful display of fruit, called hips. Jeanne d’Arc tolerates a little more shade than most roses.

never gets more than 2 or 3 inches tall. Pink Buttons forms a mat of small rounded green-burgundy foliage and its pink button flowers appear continuously from spring to fall. It tolerates filtered shade through full sun. If winters are mild it remains evergreen with its burgundy color intensifying.

GRASSES RUBY GRASS Melinus nerviglumis Ruby Grass is a low growing, 18 to 24 inches, which makes it perfectly sized for the small garden. It has fine textured bluegreen foliage and pink flowers that create fluffy, 8 to 12 inch plumes throughout the summer. It demands good drainage to thrive in our humid summer climates.

CATLIN’S GIANT AJUGA Ajuga reptans 'Catlin's Giant' This hardy groundcover grows to about 12 inches and quickly spreads to create a mat of green leaves with purple and bronze highlights. Purple flower spikes rise above the foliage in May. Its broad leaves provide a course texture in contrast to most fine-textured groundcovers. It prefers partial shade, but will tolerate some sun.

CASSIAN FOUNTAIN GRASS Pennisetum alopecuriodes ‘Cassian’ A fine fit for the urban garden at 12 to 18 inches high, Cassian Fountain Grass has fine textured foliage. Its compact silver-tan foxtail flowers mature to creamy tan. They stand 6 to 12 inches above the foliage and appear throughout the summer. Like most grasses, it requires good drainage.

GREEN ICE ROSE Rosa sp. ‘Green Ice’ Green Ice is a miniature rose growing 12 to 18 inches. Its tight pink buds open a pale pink to white and then take on a cast of green. The double white flowers are lightly fragrant and appear spring through fall. Its petite, dark green leaves give it a fine texture.

GULF COAST MUHLY Muhlenbergia capillaris This is a native grass that is 24 to 36 inches tall and can be seen growing in fields not far from town. When driving country roads in late summer, the fields are evident by the purple clouds that appear to float above them. It is a very fine textured grass with bluish-green foliage and feathery pink flower panicles that stand 12 inches above foliage. MISCANTHUS MORNING LIGHT Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’ This ornamental grass stands 3 to 4 feet tall with upright arching foliage. The margins of the fine textured leaf are clear white giving it an all day appearance of shimmering morning light. Its reddish bronze flowers, standing 1 to 2 feet above the foliage and dry to a fluffy cream color.

BLUE PRINCESS VERBENA Verbena sp. ‘Blue Princess’ This Verbena has been named a Texas Superstar. It is a hardy perennial groundcover growing to 12 inches. Lavender blue flat clusters, 2 to 3 inches across, appear spring to fall. Blue Princess prefers full sun, but will tolerate some shade. It tends to be a butterfly magnet.

VINES PASSION VINE Passiflora x Incense This vine is a must have for butterfly lovers. It is a major host plant for the Gulf Fritillary butterfly. Its exotic blooms are deep purple and appear spring through fall, There are passion vine varieties whose flowers are red, white and lavender, but my favorite is the dark purple for the intense fragrance not found in other varieties.

GROUNDCOVERS PINK BUTTONS Polygonum ‘Pink Buttons’ This perennial groundcover

crimson flowers emerge from pure white, bell-shaped calyces from spring to fall. As the flowers fade the calyces turn from pure white to lavender, adding another dimension to the bloom. The deep emerald green foliage is 3 to 4 inches long. The vine tolerates full sun to a surprising amount of shade and attracts butterflies. POTATO VINE Solanum seaforthianum (Blue Potato Vine) Solanum jasminoides ‘Album’ (White Potato Vine) These semi-evergreen vines have 1 inch showy clusters of blue or white flowers that appear spring through fall. The blue flowers produce a red berry and the white flowers produce a yellow berry. The 2 inch lance-shaped leaves are a glossy dark green. The vine tolerates full sun and a fair amount of shade. RANGOON CREEPER Quisqualis indica This lush fast growing vine is evergreen in mild winters, but will drop foliage when temperatures reach 32°. Foliage is 4 to 5 inches long and bright green in color. It produces very fragrant tubular flower clusters late spring through fall. The flowers emerge white, and then turn pink and ultimately red. Rangoon Creeper is a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies.

PERENNIALS PURPLE CONEFLOWER Echinacea pallida This tough and handsome native is a vigorous perennial, 2 to 3 feet tall, with deep green foliage. Purple daisy-like flowers with an iridescent red-orange, coned center appear late spring through fall. It is an excellent cut flower with prickly seed heads that add interest to dried arrangements. Edible flower petals can add visual appeal to salads or garnishes and the plant is popularly believed to stimulate the immune system.

that appear summer through fall, although mine blooms best in the dead of winter when it receives better sun. If yours bloom best in the warm season, do not deadhead the flowers late in the season as the persistent center cones add winter interest and the seeds provide a source of food for small birds. This perennial also attracts butterflies. PLUMBAGO Plumbago auriculata This Texas SuperStar perennial grows 3 to 4 feet, but will climb several feet higher given support. It loves our hot humid summers and is relatively drought tolerant. The fine textured foliage is bright green and forms a dense clump. The 2 inch flower clusters appear continuously spring through frost, and depending on variety, are shades of sky blue or white. Although it blooms best in full sun, Plumbago can take considerable shade and bloom heavily with a better foliage color. Butterflies love Plumbago and its dense growth habit gives cover to many bird species. BLACK AND BLUE SALVIA Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue’ Another perennial sure to attract butterflies and hummingbirds, Black and Blue Salvia is a course textured plant growing 3 to 4 feet. Large, 6 to 8 inch panicles of electric blue flowers and black sepals appear on black stems from spring through fall. The large leaves are bright green and emit a light anise scent when brushed, making it often referred to as Anise Salvia. This section is contributed by Mike Gibson and Susan Fischer, A.S.L.A., licensed Landscape Architects with the design-build firm of Fischer Schalles, Inc. Ms. Fischer currently serves on the Urban Harvest Board of Directors, a community garden and orchard program for Greater Houston.

NOTES:

RUDBECKIA GOLDSTURM Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm’ Another tough, traffic-stopping perennial, Rudbeckia Goldsturm grows 18 to 24 inches tall and is commonly called Black-eyed Susan. Most Rudbeckia species, many of which are also called Black-eyed Susan, are biennial, but Goldsturm is a true perennial variety, getting better every year. The flowers are 3 inch, golden-yellow black-eyed daisies

Water is essential for life. We thirst. We sweat. And the cycle repeats. Our bodies are comprised of approximately 70 percent water – the same percentage of water that covers the earth’s surface. Inherently we know that water is a source of life and renewal; we are drawn to it. Adding a fountain to your landscape brings both new vitality and soothing comfort. Landscape Architect Mark McKinnon strives to create residential gardens that are healing gardens. “Using all the elements of nature grounds us and restores us and helps us cope with daily stresses,” says McKinnon. “We are delighted by the sight of water – it encourages us to take a few quiet moments.”

STYLE DECISIONS

A minimalist urn set atop a bed of rocks – known as a disappearing fountain – may work well with a modern townhome. The upright lines and small footprint mimic the style of the home and won’t hog a courtyard or petite green space. Larger yards are great candidates for fountains that cover more ground. “As a landscape architect, I tend to make the fountain relate to the architecture of the house or the client’s interior style, referring to specific formal or informal elements 47

handbook |

F O U N TA I N S on the site,” says McKinnon. “I also consider the axial relationship to the house, the style of the garden and house.” Look at photos of famous fountain to help determine your fountain’s style. Tim Turner of Windswept Landscape Studios draws inspiration from iconic European fountains surrounding such grand places as Versailles and Villa D’ Este. “It’s like studying ballet before you can perform contemporary dance,” says Turner. “You have to study the classics to be able to create something modern.” McKinnon strives to connect the fountain with its surroundings by utilizing materials, such as brick and stone, that are the same or similar to the site and then complementing them with interesting shapes and textures. Architectural design options include a stone wall with a subtle spout of water falling into a square pool, a pillar that overflows into a round pool, a series of spouts along a low wall with a semicircular collection basin. Statues or abstract sculptures can be incorporated for LEFT: A stone wall sprays onto a rectangular pool. Photo courtesy Windswept Landscape Studios

F O U N TA I N S a dramatic style statement. Choose a Greek or Italian figure for a traditional and formal look, or opt for something more casual and whimsical. “Think outside the box and have fun with the design,” says Welch. “You can use a washtub and a watering can, or even go to Tractor Supply or any feed store for container ideas!” THINGS TO CONSIDER

“We create what is appropriate on a residential scale, guiding clients towards sustainable, easily maintained fountains,” says McKinnon. “You don’t want it to become abandoned or forgotten because of issues like water clarity, leaf debris or mosquitoes.” Beverly Welch of The Arbor Gate advises homeowners to think carefully about location. “You don’t necessarily want to put it out front,” she says. “Place it where you will spend plenty of time and get the maximum enjoyment out of it.” Choose a size that is in proportion to your landscape area – it’s not a good idea to place a huge three-tiered Italian fountain in a tiny courtyard. Welch also says it’s wise to account for wind, especially when a fountain LEFT: A minimalist spout pours onto well-lit rocks. Photo courtesy McKinnon & Associates

F O U N TA I N S will have a significant amount of drop (vertical fall of water), since you don’t want to lose too much water. “It’s important to think about the volume of water needed to produce the desired sound,” says Turner. “This will dictate the scale and dimensions. Also think about minimizing evaporation and/or water waste (splash over).” “Think about how much maintenance and time the fountain will require and make it practical for your lifestyle and schedule,” says Welch. “It’s kinda like getting a puppy.” NATURAL ELEMENTS

Place plants around your fountain that are appropriate for the soil conditions and sun exposure. “Be sure the plants you place near you fountain like to have their feet wet – they should love moisture,” says Turner.

F O U N TA I N S Welch recommends plants that naturally grow near water, such as Canna lilies, reeds, rushes, cattails, horsetails and native pitcher plants. She also suggests alocasia (elephant ears) for a tropical touch and bamboo for Japanese look. In addition to introducing the soothing sight and sound of moving water, installing a fountain draws wildlife, such as birds and butterflies and dragonflies to your landscape. Friends and neighbors may compliment you on your finished fountain, but nature’s visitors will become ardent admirers of your water feature, as well.

Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show FEB. 27-28 • BERRY CENTER

The third annual Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show, Saturday and Sunday, February 27 and 28, at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Road (at West Road) in Cypress

Want to turn your home into the ultimate getaway? The third annual Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show on Feb. 27-28 will feature an exciting lineup of industry-expert speakers and more than 200 vendors, all showcasing new products and the latest ideas to spruce up your home’s indoor and outdoor spaces. To accommodate an event big enough to bring in a new decade, the show has been expanded to include two seminar stages that showcase new products to outfit your home in style. Landscaping and outdoor-living spaces will also be on display. About 6,000 attendees are expected at the event.

This year’s show will be held Saturday, Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 28 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Road. The show will feature well-known speakers such as Michael Garfield “The High-Tech Texan;” Randy Lemmon, host of KTRH 740’s GardenLine show; and Brenda Beust Smith, “The Lazy Gardener.” Famed chef and Houston restaurateur Clive Berkman will be speaking both days of the show, offering tips on preparing restaurant-quality meals in your own kitchen. Spring is the time to organize things, but many of us need help. Linda Durham, a professional organizer and owner of Organizing Matters, will speak on how to eliminate clutter – once and for all. Other speakers include Carrie Davies of Interiors by Decorating Den; landscape architect and outdoor-living expert, Michael Harkins, of Timeless Landscape Creations; kitchen and bath redesign expert Peggy McGowen, ASID, CMKBD, of Kitchen & Bath Concepts; and LaVerne Williams, AIA, LEED AP, and Dan Marshall, local specialists on ways to incorporate green design and products into home planning and remodeling. At the Viking Outdoor Cooking Stage, get recipes and terrific ideas from a professional chef who will also be giving cooking demonstrations on Viking appliances. Former Houston Rockets Head Coach Rudy Tomjanovich will be on hand to sign autographs and visit with attendees. Tickets for the Cy-Fair Home & Garden Show are $9 for adults, $7 for seniors and free for children under 16. Parking is free. For more information, go to www.CyFairHomeAndGarden.com.

and I’ve been living at the Houston SPCA since September. I’m a female Labrador and Chinese Shar-Pei mix who’s full of energy and willing to learn and please my humans. My previous owners brought me to the shelter because they thought I was too big. The nerve! Just look at my sleek body and you can see I’m the normal size for my breed(s). I weigh exactly 31 pounds and the folks at the shelter say I’m the sweetest, kindest dog around. I’m 4 years old, love kids and cats, but turns out cats just don't reciprocate my affection. I’d do best in a home without cats and a with a family who will spend time showing me lots of love and attention. I am housetrained, respond when called and understand "sit" and "stay." I’m ready to go home today, so come visit me and ask for my ID# A07622033 at HOUSTON SPCA 900 Portway Drive, Houston 77024, 713.869.SPCA (7722) 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, www.houstonspca.org
