The Cobens had plenty of input into the design and Ron was the one who conceived the ingenious makeover of the kidney-shaped pool into a rectangular shape. Ron calls it a “shape within a shape.” For the interiors, Ron and Leann collaborated with Anne Breux, who guided the couple toward the distinctive look of their home with her color sense and unique way of elevating a basic idea into a brilliant feat of design. Vickie and Russell contacted me for help about their dated bathroom makeover when she got stumped on the project. Her husband Russell had already begun the process with major shower tile work and was priming the wallpaper for paint when she got stuck on paint colors. “The room just felt unbalanced and heavy on the shower side of the

room,” Vickie explained, “and I couldn’t find the right paint colors and wasn’t sure what else to do,” Vickie explained. The bath definitely needed a facelift but not necessarily a complete renovation. “I have followed your Houston House & Home “Before/After” column for years and called you about four years ago to help us with several rooms and

BEFORE AFTER: To save money, the owners opted to float the wallpaper seams and paint over the wallpaper. I chose Sherwin-Williams “Kilim Beige” on the walls and “Hopsack” satin enamel on the vanity and vanity storage cabinets. The existing mirror was cut down by Spring Branch Mirror. The same mosaic tile used in the shower (purchased at Thorntree Slate & Marble) also helped balance the room.

was pleased with your suggestions,” Vickie said. “I liked your philosophy of using things we already own to create the rooms we want,” she said. TIP: A product of the ’80s, this bath needed an update. When in doubt, be consistent with hardware, tile and trim paint colors and you will be correct. The couple was happy with the existing floor tile and worked with Thorntree Slate & Marble to select darker shower wall tiles, glass mosaic border tiles and 2”x2” floor tiles to coordinate. Vickie knew she wanted a neutral color scheme and a clutter-free look. They decided to keep the

original light box, the tub and bath vanity/countertop. “When we met, you were very helpful in suggesting the size for the mirrors and in fairly short order, you identified a wall paint color and one for the vanity. You also made a window treatment suggestion, something I was having a hard time imagining but I went with your recommendation,” she explained. “You also recommended one long, traditional wool runner from www.homedecorators.com, which I love now, instead of several dotty bathroom rugs.” Vickie felt comfortable with my recommendations to pull the room together. “Thanks to you, the master bath has the traditional feeling that

is consistent with the rest of our house and yet still has the uncluttered, updated look that I wanted,” she said. TIP: If you have a huge long mirror over the vanity, consider adding a narrow storage cabinet and cutting down your mirror into two sections. Vickie was chronicling the remodel on Facebook, so her friends commented on her progress throughout the process. “Initially, the comments were all about the shower tile, which everyone loved. As soon as I painted the walls and vanity and added the rug, the comments were very favorable about how the room was coming together!” she explained. Vickie’s favorite part of the bath has been the addition of the glass mosaic tile around the properly sized mirrors. “Russell envisioned a shelf that completely filled the space between the mirrors. I emailed you to see if I could use unique doors on Russell’s custom cabinet and to ask your opinion on painting them like the vanity. I appreciated that you didn’t insist that your original thoughts of shelving were the only way to go,” she said. Vickie painted the doors after Russell built, painted and installed the cabinet. The couple loves the final result and recommends people get professional help with remodeling projects. “The only reason we didn’t do that from the very beginning is that we have done a number of projects already and Russell has the skills to do a good deal of the work. I did lose time trying to decide on the finishing details, and if I had called you earlier I think things would have come together more quickly. In the end, however, having your input in completing the project moved the process along and ensured that I did not waste any more time or money on wrong choices,” Vickie concluded.

Painting the walls Sherwin-Williams “Kilim Beige” and using “Hopsack” satin enamel on the cabinets and installing the same mosaic tile that was used in the shower balanced the entire room.

Dear Plantophiles, Let me introduce myself by saying I believe that there is no such thing as a brown thumb. Good gardeners don’t possess innate mystical powers. What they DO have is keen attention to detail and willingness to do their homework—the latter is immensely possible via internet. They also consult experts. I routinely seek the wisdom of others myself. For example, when I moved to Houston I immediately registered with our regional branch of Garden Club Mafia—not to do so would have been extremely unwise, possibly hazardous. After thorough screening by a string of operatives (all wearing trademark pearls) I was granted an audience with The Godmother. I was ushered into her reception chamber, an Orangerie, where she was sitting in an elaborate rattan peacock throne, surrounded by orchids. As I bowed she extended her hand so I could kiss her ikebana shears. She then asked of my intentions, and I replied: “I want to be allowed the privilege of helping people garden in our Gulf Coast climate—what are the main elements for success?” She tilted her head back and quietly spoke: “Mosquito repellant, sun-
screen and lots of iced tea.” I followed this with: “What about gumbo dirt—the most diabolical stuff that I have ever encountered?” A flicker of a smile crossed her lips as she invoked: “Everything starts with the soil—give it big doses of organic and drainage material. Amend! Amend! Amend!” As the echo of her words faded, she motioned for me to rise and said, “That is all you need to know for now. You appear to have potential and are granted horticultural privileges in our domain. Don’t forget that we are always aware of your activities.” Walking backward, I uttered, “Thank you, ma’am. I will spread your wisdom far and wide.” Those reading this column will find that I am much more approachable, and will enjoy visiting with you here every month. Gardens, plants and nature are my passion, and I intend to make them yours, too. I am looking forward to our journeys together down the garden path. Keep on growing, Darrin

Soon the warm months will be upon us, so now is a good time to be thinking about your landscape and possible upgrades. From the extensive to the simple, they’re all about improving the scenery. LIGHT IT UP

Landscape lighting adds immediate pizzazz to a garden. “It gives your property street appeal at night,” says John Dailey, owner of Robert Huff Landscape Illumination. “Especially it dresses up your home if you’re trying to sell it.” Another minor, but real, benefit is added security. If you’re adding lights for the first time, a quick primer: fixtures can be found in plastic, rubber, brass, copper and stainless, according to Rob Greening, owner of NiteLites. Metal fixtures offer the best durability, but are more expensive up-front, he notes. Lighting systems generally fit into the two categories of high voltage and low voltage, says Dailey. “High voltage is more expensive and great for illuminating large trees, as an example,” he says. “Low voltage is less expensive per fixture and uses less electricity, but doesn’t last as long as high voltage.” Lightbulbs also present two main options. A technology that has been around for years, halogen lights give off a warm white light. A newer technology comes in the form of LED lights, which

can also be warm white. But increase the intensity and that changes their color, says Greening. Dailey is a fan of LEDs, noting that, while they are initially more expensive, they last about 50,000 hours versus the roughly 5,000 hours for halogen. “They also use about 20% of the electricity used by halogen lights,” he says. For DIY-ers, Greening encourages the use of direct burial wires (noted on labels) and avoiding telephone-grade wiring because it deteriorates relatively quickly. He also says to use silicone gel lock connectors, which last longer. SMALL EFFORT, BIG EFFECT

If resources are limited, go for the easy upgrade. “Add seasonal color. Just a splash makes a big difference,” says Gail Hartz, president of Gail Hartz & Associates. Beverly Welch, owner of The Arbor Gate, offers several ideas—most that can be done in a weekend. Plant a fragrance or herb garden, either in the ground or in containers. Add a garden bench, choosing concrete, stone or recycled plastic, materials that maintain their good looks in our climate. Ornamental trees, such as the Chinese fringetree, Japanese maple or Taiwan cherry, add interest and color. “Have a plan in place,” she advises. “If you know where you’re going, you’ll be happier with the end results.”

“It’s fun to renovate,” says Hartz. And to keep that spirit of enjoyment intact, she advises her clients to bear in mind that a landscape can be developed over time—“undertake projects only when you’re ready. It helps to have an overall plan in place, but do things as your energy and budget permit by undertaking the different steps in stages. That way, it will be a pleasurable experience.”

Special advice for the homeowners who want to upgrade their landscapes without actually having to grow anything: • From Welch at The Arbor Gate: Add some garden sculpture or art, such as a kinetic wind sculpture or that most Southern artistic element, a bottle tree. • Hartz suggests decorating your outdoor living space. “Add new patio furniture or a fountain. Fountains are especially nice in an urban area because the sound of the water disguises city noises,” she says. • NiteLite’s Greening says, “Light up an architectural feature of the house. Front windows or columns, for example.” • Hartz also notes that our recent weather has caused the ground to shift and that’s been hard on concrete. “You can cover cracks and really get a customized look by laying pavers.” Her favorite choices include paving stones and non-skid ceramic tiles.

LESS REALLY CAN BE MORE Sometimes an upgrade is not about adding something—it’s about taking something away. At Robert Huff, Dailey points out that weather-related events impact landscape lighting and “due to dead branches, you may have a light that used to showcase a tree and now it’s shooting straight up in the air.” In these cases, he recommends a quick re-design of your lighting layout. In that same vein, Greening with NiteLites encourages clients to maintain fixture lens, which get cloudy due to our hard water—“sometimes we go at them with razor blades.” Hartz advises, “You can often freshen up your landscape simply by tidying up: mulch the beds, feed plants, trim dead growth, repair gates and fencing. It’s amazing what that effort will do for a garden.”

A sensitive remodel and addition give new life to a 1960s home on a lush Memorial lot BY

A
fter searching for a home in the Memorial area for more than a year, Ron and Leanne Coben knew they’d found the right house almost instantly when they attended a realtor’s open house in Piney Point Village. “We saw right away that the house had straight, clean, modern lines that we could work with,” says Ron Coben of the Mid Century Ranch Modern they purchased in the fall of 2010. “We knew we wanted to add on to the existing house—we weren’t sure how it would work, but we had the vision to build on the existing house.” The Cobens noticed that most everyone else who attended the open house didn’t bother touring the interior of the house, but merely scoped out the dimensions of the almost one-acre lot for teardown/new construction possibilities. By contrast, the Cobens liked the existing 2800-square-foot home, built in 1968 and designed by architect Joel Brand for the original owners. The same couple lived there for 42 years and were pleased to find a buyer who planned to keep, rather than tear down their home. 55
PROJECT PARTNERS When the Cobens were looking for a builder and architect to take on their remodel and addition, they decided to talk to the builder who had completed a remodel on the house next door, since their neighbors seemed quite pleased with the process and the results of their project. Steve Goodchild of Goodchild Builders and Kathleen Reardon of RD Architecture had done the house next door, and had proven to be a strong team. Not all builders, architects or designers are up for remodeling and reinventing an older home, but Steve Goodchild was very keen on the Coben’s home project. “You got to want to do a remodel, restoration or renovation,” says homeowner Ron Coben. “Other builders were only OK with the remodel, but it was not really their preference—architects, too.” The Cobens viewed opting to remodel and add on as less daunting than starting from square one on a new house.

“Because it was a remodel and because we wanted to save the floors, we needed to minimize the number of walls to that we moved,” says Leanne. “For me, that actually made the design process easier, because it wasn’t a blank sheet of paper. We had to work within certain specifications.” “It made it harder because it boxed us in, but it also made it easier, because once you accepted that you wanted to live with what was here as much as you could, it simplified the choices,” says Don. After the Cobens decided to keep much of the existing house intact and make some alterations to it, they focused on getting as much of their own personalities into the design as possible. Functionality, ease of maintenance and capacity for entertaining were priorities for the remodel and the added square footage. Both Leanne and Ron have worked for years in marketing, so they tend to be creative and thrive on the collaborative process. “It was nice to have an architect who brought a lot to the table,”

The Cobens say their new kitchen is very livable and functional. Throughout the design process Ron constantly sought materials, finishes and storage options that would not require frequent polishing or sealing or fussing with. White Zeus Silestone provides a stunning and sturdy work surface. Cabinetmaker Jim Farris built all the cabinets. The lower cabinets feature a post-catalyzed conversion varnish on rift-cut cherry, while the upper cabinets are treated with an 25-step Italian postcatalyzed polyurethane, hand polished to a full gloss.

says Ron. “Kathleen Reardon did a great job of listening and accepting our input. Some creative people can be difficult to move down a path the didn’t choose to begin with, but we felt like we had the best of everything in working with people who were creative and willing to make sure that we were satisfied with the outcome. “Steve Goodchild always made me feel like he felt like this was his house—he was building it at that level,” says Leanne. Reardon and Goodchild had worked together previously, but neither had many modern-inspired homes in

their portfolios. The Cobens were impressed with the efforts that both the architect and builder dedicated to the design and build out of their home. GIVING THE PROJECT WINGS With the decision to keep the existing house, the Cobens decided with architect Kathleen Reardon to add on two wings to the back of the home, which yielded a U-shaped home that wrapped around the original pool. The more than 3/4-acre lot had a bounty of trees—more than 100 trees, many of them tall pines. So from the beginning the goal was to leave as

many trees standing as possible as they drew up the additions. In the main rooms of the original home, the high, sloping ceilings showcase the original rooflines. And much of the homey, yet oh-so-mod solid redwood paneling remains. For the remodel, all the wood was removed, numbered and carefully stored so it could be replaced in its original arrangement. The builder and homeowners alike marveled as the sheetrock was removed to inspect structure and upgrade wiring and plumbing. They could see just how high the quality of the original construction was. This assured the Cobens that embracing this older home was the right thing to do and motivated the design and construction team to achieve a similar level of excellence in the new finishes and additional spaces. A major aha-moment of the design process was the inspiration to go with a Mid Century-inspired butterfly roof design for both of the additional wings. “We wanted something ’60s-inspired,” says Ron. “The end result is an organic asymmetrical butterfly shape.” With the additions taking shape, the Cobens and their architect focused on the challenge of how to connect the old house with the new sections. “We had wanted structural steel to be a significant design element,” says Ron. “And Kathleen came up with the idea for a visual spine made of the steel—some inside, some outside.” With the shape and visual function of the steel spine laid out, interior designer Anne Breux wisely suggested painting the captivating, sculptural indoor/outdoor bridge a rich purple. The Cobens freely admit that Breux’s color sense elevated the look of their home and is a main reason

they sought her expertise. It seems that Ron and Leann found they were repeatedly gravitating towards grey finishes and fabrics, but they felt certain that their ‘60s home needed some fun pops of color. Enter Anne Breux. Breux was familiar with the work of Joel Brand, the architect of the original home, and Breux instantly connected with the project. The Cobens were relieved that Breux agreed with most of their choices, but are quite pleased with Breux’s subtle and successful design tweaks. “She understands the vision of the project,” says Ron. She is brilliant and creative without necessarily being expensive. For Anne, it’s really about the idea and how to bring the vision to life.” “She brings limited choices, which was so helpful,” says Leanne. “We knew that she’d done her homework and we could trust that they were the most appropriate options.” “Anne is a minimalist,” says Ron. “She was already conceptually there. When she suggested painting the sculptural steel structure purple, she explained that purple is a complementary color to the green backdrop of the wooded lot. “It’s funny, the simple things aren’t always simple, but she gets there quickly,” says Ron. “Her ideas are massively interesting. It’s a place we wish we could play, but we need her to get there.”

Pretty pots are easy to find. Make sure each pot has a drain hole and is a good fit for the plant.
Container Gardening ADD A SPLASH OF COLOR TO PORCHES AND PATIOS We asked Joshua Kornegay, owner of Joshua’s Native Plants, for advice and inspiration to help home gardeners have success with container gardening. Before you get carried away with selecting pretty plants, selecting ideal containers is key, urges Kornegay. “Make sure your pots have drain holes—even for indoor plants,” he says. “If you don’t have holes then your plants just sit in a soggy mess.” Kornegay explains that gardeners can create a container garden with any size pot, but it’s important make sure you know the mature size of the plants and their root habit. It’s also a good idea to choose a style of pot that fits your surroundings. Pots can be rustic, Asian, classic urns or modern shallow bowls. Our expert advises it’s best to combine plants that like the same soil and light conditions. “Different plants like different types of soil and soil 68
conditions—alkaline, acidic, etc.,” says Kornegay. “Some prefer wet feet, others like it on the dry side. Know which conditions plants prefer for better survival rate.” He suggests home gardeners ask nursery staff for the best choices for their conditions—sun, shade and time you can spend tending plants. “Also, ask about dwarf varieties of shrubs and tree species that can be happy in pots, such as dwarf lemon trees.” Tips for Care
“Keep in mind, things in pots dry out twice as fast as they would in the ground, so something that is drought tolerant in the ground still requires watering when planted in a pot. Rosemary, for example, must be watered regularly in a pot,” says Kornegay. Beyond the finger test (poking a finger into the soil), Kornegay

project recommends checking the weight of a small pot frequently to see if it feels dried out and watching for the “water shadow” on terra cotta pots. Similarly, he advises that plants that are winter-hardy in the ground may not be winter-hardy when potted, because the roots are above the ground. When in doubt, move or protect plants during freezing temperatures. “Whenever you water plants in pots, it constantly depletes the nutrients, so you need to replenish or feed those plants,” says Kornegay. “You can even take the plant out of the pot, remove about a third of the roots and about a third of the top and put it back in the same pot with some soil and compost and it will kind of start over with a burst of fresh growth. Nurseries do it all the time.” Periodic feeding of plants in containers is essential. “If going organic, take a handful of compost from the bottom of our compost heap—that has all the micronutrients you need,” says Kornegay. “If using chemicals, make sure they are water-soluble. In other words, something applied in a liquid form to be absorbed by the roots. Cheaper granular fertilizers can easily burn a plant.”

Recipe for a Garden in a Pot Joshua Kornegay of Joshua’s Native Plants extols a simple formula for assembling a pretty container garden. “There’s three basic elements: the thrill, the fill, and the spill,” he says. Thrill—The taller focal point of a pot should have showy flowers or leaves. Go with butterfly iris, plumbago, hummingbird plant, rock rose or Bouvardia (firecracker bush). Fill—Medium-height plants add texture or color to the base of the “thrill” plant. Try Blackfoot Daisy, allysum and various coleus. Spill—Trailing plants that drape over the edges of the pot, such as Lantana, English Ivy, Blue Daze or oregano. Other themes that Kornegay suggests include edible gardens, such as lettuces and herbs. He also recommends grouping a variety of cactus plants, succulents and sedums in a pot and then mulching with contrasting tumbled glass or rock. For a simpler, modern look, go with a single specimen per pot, such as a sculptural Blue Elf Agave, a tall cactus or a well-manicured Boxwood. He also notes that strategic top dressing, such as various colored glass rock or stones helps deter critters from digging.
