THE KITCHEN ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE NEITHER ARE WE.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Exploring new territory . . .

The lifestyles and preferences of today’s consumer have inspired us to reimagine the kitchen. With innovations like the first Hands-free Autofill water dispenser, the first dishwasher with 102 cleaning jets and a clean modern appearance, the GE kitchen is more intelligent, intuitive and beautiful than ever. l geappliances.com

reimagining home

It took me about 20 to 30 minutes to reach the community of Fulshear, TX, from the Galleria area. After turning into the neighborhood of Cross Creek Ranch, I found the beautiful home we’re featuring on page 44. Art Director Robert Coplin and Photographer Anthony Rathbun already had set up camp to capture images for the story written by Marsha Canright. If you don’t know Fulshear, it’s a booming little community – 8.2 square miles as a matter of fact – in the northwest part of Fort Bend County. It was founded in 1824, when Churchill Fulshear received a land grant from Mexico. A long-time Houstonian friend remembers it as just being an endless sight of farmland. No more, it’s a thriving community of about 2,900plus residents! It may be worth taking a ride out there, especially if you’re in the market for a spacious new home. As I write this for February, it is still the first month of the year. And I continue to hear and read all kinds of projections for 2015! It is both fun and exciting to anticipate what’s ahead. Popular Houston Blogger Joni Webb shares her own design observations on page 40. She’s a good one to pay attention to. Her insights are thoughtful and unbiased. HOUSTON

Other designers, writers and home show organizers say to watch for: • Warm and homey kitchens; the ultra sleek ones are losing favor. • Dominant colors, such as neutrals, with gray and black being popular. • Stainless is getting paired more with rustic woods, or wood with marble. • Traditional with clean lines appeal, as with shaker-style cabinets. • More ceiling emphasis, in terms of shape, style and features. • Lighting is making a bigger design statement. Think elegant, dramatic. One more found tidbit . . . homeowners apparently seek a cross between urban sophistication and country comfort. Interesting . . . Fulshear, TX, describes itself as where small town charm meets urban sophistication. Guess that’s the new buzz phrase. Have a great month, Susan (and Sam)

GOOD BRICK AWARD WINNERS

When Preservation Houston presents the Good Brick Awards for excellence in historic preservation on Friday, February 20, the awardwinning projects will run the gamut from modest Victorian houses in the East End and Old Sixth Ward to a gracious Boulevard Oaks home and historic school buildings north and south of downtown Houston. A jury of design and preservation professionals, former Good Brick Award winners and community leaders select the recipients. “For the past 36 years, the Good Brick Awards have been one of the best ways we have for increasing public awareness of historic preservation in Houston and encouraging additional projects,” says Preservation Houston President Jane-Page Crump. Twelve projects and one book were chosen to receive Good Brick Awards this year: • Pearl Hospitality (above left) – for its development of the JW Marriott Houston Downtown in the historic Carter Building.

• Eva Hughes and Brenda Hughes – for the rehabilitation of the Art Deco Loggins-Hughes Building on Washington Avenue

• The Heritage Society (left) – for restoration and reinterpretation of the Fourth Ward Cottage in Sam Houston Park.

• Ellie and Christian Busker – for the renovation of a 1920s bungalow in Sunset Heights Annex.

• Michael Skelly and Anne Whitlock – for the renovation of a Victorian cottage and the rescue of six historic houses in the East End.

• Carl and Karine Holliman – for the renovation and sympathetic addition to their Victorian cottage in the Old Sixth Ward Historic District.

• Houston Community College (left) – for its restoration of the former San Jacinto High School in Midtown.

• Glen Rosenbaum – for the rehabilitation of his midcentury modern house in Meyerland.

• Stephen Howe and Alicia Blaszak – for the renovation and sympathetic addition to their Tudor Revival style house in the Boulevard Oaks Historic District.

• Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School – for the renovation of the former Mount Carmel High School.

• Nature Discovery Center Houston (left) – for the rehabilitation of the historic Henshaw House in Bellaire.

16 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

• Harris County (right)– for the renovation of the former Robert E. Lee Elementary School as the Leonel J. Castillo Community Center on the Near Northside.

• James Gast – for his book, “The Astrodome:

Building An American Spectacle.” In addition to the juried awards, Preservation Houston will present its Community Pillar Award to Buffalo Bayou Partnership for its outstanding contributions to the community through preserving green space and historic structures. Preservation Houston’s Pier & Beam next-generation member group will also present its Future Landmark Award to BBVA Compass Stadium for significant new construction.

We carry a wide selection of brick, pavers, stone, retaining walls, concrete block, landscape products and masonry accessories perfect for historic restoration or new construction.

What’s one thing you would tell homeowners who are ready to put their home on the market? Look at your home like a buyer would.

Visit our newly remodeled design center to see how we can perfect your project.

What do you do that other agents may not to ensure a seller gets top dollar? I go through the home and advise on staging and editing the home so it shows the best. I also see the competitive homes so I have an edge on the benefits or negatives of the other homes.

AFTER: A clear glass shower enclosure, hiding the toilet behind the shower and a pocket door painted Benjamin Moore White Dove Satin Impervo changed this room entirely. The walls are Benjamin Moore HC-143 Wythe Blue. A new M&M chandelier over the new Kohler soaker tub in “biscuit” added light and glamour to a functional room. The Crema Marfil marble is by Master Tile. BEFORE: The new biscuit Toto toilet facing the doorway was frustrating this homeowner.

Dixie called me because she had seen a bedroom I had done in my column for Houston House and Home.“ I just thought it was a great transformation on a budget,” she explains, noting that she thought I could help them re-work their bathroom. Not a stranger to working with a decorator, (Dixie and her husband Robert have used Ted Currier to remodel other rooms in their house).

TIP: One way to balance a new

Kohler “Tea for Two” soaker tub in the room is to install a glass shower enclosure. The couple had lots of choices and could not make decisions on their 12 x 15-foot bathroom space. “It was obvious that our bathroom just did not feel ‘finished’,” Dixie says. I did not want the room overly ‘styled.’ I just wanted more of a collected, casual look using some accessory pieces we already owned. “Obviously the flow of the room had to work—I just could not visualize it.” She adds that they just were not moving forward

on their own, and she was frustrated that the space was not ‘finished.’ “I never liked our bathroom. The room was broken into two sections. One section was a dressing area off from the closet with one sink and a long vanity. You then went into another section that was closed off. It had one sink with a corner medicine cabinet on each side. There was no tub and the shower was in a corner. It was small and dark. The toilet sat facing the door to the room. If the door wasn’t properly closed, there was no privacy at all. “Your attention to detail was very helpful. I felt more confident in achieving my desires after our meeting. My goal was to have a soaker tub and a larger seamless shower—also a privacy area for the toilet. “One of your suggestions that stood out was the idea

that the pocket door could recess into the wall. The contractor had decided it needed one to two inches. You told me that was not necessary. He had done my other bath remodeling the same way,” she says. The hardest suggestion for her to visualize? “To be able to have both a soaker tub and shower without the space feeling cramped. We lost our linen closet, which is now where the tub is. The contractor was able to place it so that it butts up to the larger closet, which now gives me shoe and handbag storage, too. He also was able to steal four to five inches of space from the bedroom wall to accommodate a ledge around the tub,” she says. “It’s the little things that make such a difference and I would recommend seeking help from knowledgeable and experienced professionals. It is well worth the expense,” Dixie says. What have friends and family said about the changes? They love them, particularly the mirrors hanging over the double sinks. AFTER: : Hanging double mirrors over the new Kohler Caxton double sinks in “biscuit,” and adding new recessed cans by Lightolier and sconce lighting from Lighting Inc. not only brightened the room but adds style and glamour, too.

As the young mother of two toddlers, Meg Lonergan knows a thing or two about decorating with kiddos in mind. Q: You went pretty bold with your son’s nursery. What did you do, what was the objective? My objective was to design a gender-neutral nursery that my husband and I would enjoy spending time in. I didn’t want just a room that felt "babyish.” The room also

needed to function as our guest room I originally was inspired to use a mint color. After seeing Farrow & Ball's black-blue paint color at Boxwood Interiors, I knew I had to paint my nursery that color. It was a major risk, but it payed off. We loved how cozy it felt. Q: Were there challenges? Storage was a major problem, because we lived in a 1,100sqaure-foot heights bungalow, but I found the armoire at the Guild Shop and used that to store clothing. We used picture ledges from IKEA and had them painted the wall color to store books. Q: What does every nursery need? In all of my projects, we use custom window treatments. They create warmth and, plus, the blackout lining is essential. Book storage is also essential in a child's room. Soft flooring and bright happy colors are ideal for babies and young children. Lulu DK fabric was used on the shades (upper left, photo by Megan Thompson). The painting above the daybed served as the inspiration for the color palette used throughout. On the lower left photo by Kate LeSueur, the Paule Marrot butterfly was found at the end of the proect. It fit into the room perfectly, according to Meg Lonergan of LeSueur Interiors.

Q: What is the best investment someone can make? I like to invest in items like artwork in a child’s space. It will stand the test of time. Paint colors can change, cribs have a two- to three-year life span, but artwork will always be on the walls. Q: How do you upgrade a look without breaking the piggybank? Sometimes it’s about compromise. With one client, we fell in love with a Raoul Textiles print. It was pricey to do the entire window using that fabric, but we decided to only use it as a leading edge trim to save on fabric costs. In the end, we were thrilled because the pattern was very charming without dominating the room. I did the same with someone else . . . I again used a more expensive fabric for the bottom banding on the draperies and bought an affordable linen to use on top.

In the upper photo, Jossette Droz of Droz Design updated this teen boy’s room. She used most of the furnishings already there, but she incorporated an energizing paint design to liven up his space. She began with red, his favorite color. All are Benjamin Moore Shades. In the lower photo, she also used Benjamin Moore colors on the wall in the girl’s room. The acylic chandlier is from Present Time.

Q: What is your starting point? And what do you consider when designing? When I am designing, I like to create rooms that wiIl grow with each child. The first step is to have a good skeleton in place – by this I mean good quality furniture pieces that will look good no matter your child's age; pieces that will last and grow with him/her. My objective is for the child to love his/her space. I work hard to make beautiful as well as functional spaces. I want them to feel comfortable in their rooms, knowing that their space represents who they are. When working in a child's room, I always start by talking to the kids or parents (depending on the age). I find out what colors and things they like, because I want to let their personalities show through the design.

Q: What is the biggest expense? Furniture should be your biggest cost item, because by simply changing walls and accessories, you can change a room completely.. Q: What are some of your tried-and-true preferences for a child’s room? I like using white microfiber because it is child friendly and easy to clean. Plus, white looks beautiful and crisp, but since one little girl – my client – liked the color turquoise, I added turquoise-colored buttons on the bed. For her quilt, I ordered a solid turquoise from Amity to complement the rest of the room. Custom-made pieces allow you to get exactly what you need and want. In the girl’s room, we did do some custom items, like the bed and the pillow shams. I also like cotton shaggy area rugs, which are great because they are machine washable. PRODUCT REVIEW

WALLPAPER IS BACK! The Wow Factor is Crazy Good BY BARBARA CANETTI

Above: Petal Pusher Taupe by Hygge and West. Below: Helenia by Harlequin.

Multistem by Harlequin creates a playfully modern focal point.

Wallpapers – from traditional to bold, edgy, animal prints, geometrics or floral designs – can transform a space in a matter of hours. The wallpapers of our parents’ generation are gone – and new, updated and upgraded wallpapers are making a resurgence. And in a big way. Careful selection of a wallpaper can make a small room feel larger, a big room feel cozier and an opportunity to make a dim space feel light and airy. Walls can become a focal point, with furnishings accentuating the design element created by the wallpaper. And, according to Houston designer Chandos Dodson Epley, of Chandos Interiors, some of the newer styles can even “buy time” until the homeowner has purchased art for a wall. “Some of the newer abstract wallpapers almost look like paintings. If homeowners have not yet purchased art for their home, these wallpapers can give the room personality before art has been purchased,” she says. Epley says she has always recommended to her clients wallpaper as an option to add texture and “break up all the Sheetrock walls” in a house. She favors grass cloths, lacquered, wool felt and hand-painted papers to bring “instant décor” to a home. 34 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“I tell my clients to select something they love,” she adds, but wallpaper can be replaced (papered over) easily if they grow tired of a design. With designers recommending wallpaper more often, manufacturers are seeing the resurgence in its popularity. “Wallpaper is back in the last few years and it is very different from the bad memories people have of it from the 1960s and 1970s,” says Christiana Coop, co-founder of Hygge & West, a Minneapolis-based wallpaper company. “Over time, there have been improvements in the technology for the paper and the paste, making it easier to put up and take down.” Hygge & West offers collections of wallpapers, some created by the inspirations of the artists as well as others that were created “to our vision.” The new popularity covers a wide range of styles, from metallics to big or small scale designs as well as florals and animal prints. But Coop noted that wallpaper selection is personal – what someone likes or strikes them in a good way. For designers, the endless varieties of wall coverings can easily add different dimensions to a room, while giving the space a fresh but not fussy look. Additionally, wallpaper can help create allusions – stripes makes a low ceiling feel higher, metallic papers can make a snug powder room feel larger and dynamic, textured papers can warm up a Left: Daydream-Orange by Hygge and West adds whimsy to an entry hallway.

room, and whimsical designs can transform a space to make a bold statement. And, wallpaper can have other applications besides covering all four walls. Paper the inside of a bookcase or shelf to draw attention to it, select a wallpaper mural to highly a specific spot with unexpected vibrancy or line a closet for a surprise transformation. Two tidbits of wisdom: check to make sure each roll of wallpaper received has the same batch and reference number and is the same shade. And – hire a professional to hang the wallpaper. “It’s all about the installation,” says Epley. “That’s where it can go awry.”

For the second half of this decade, there are several major design elements that seem to be here to stay – for a while, anyway. Trends stay current for around 10 years, and most of these looks have been gaining in popularity for the past five years. The younger set is definitely driving the most major of changes. Monochromatic, all white or beige interiors seem boring now – unless there are pops of color around. Twenty, 30-and 40-yearolds want color and pattern. And they favor more contemporary and mid-Century designs. Joni Webb’s family room with newly added patterned curtains and colorful pillows.

Welcomes in 2015 With Bright, Bold Decorating Trends

Designer Katie Stassi Scott electrified this room by adding a tufted red sofa to the pale pink and white color scheme.

For those, like me – who are older and more settled – bold color and pattern can be very scary. Anything other than white has definitely gone against my aesthetic. But I have to say, I find myself more and more attracted to both color and pattern. In my own family room, (above left) I recently changed out my simple striped curtains for patterned ones and added pops of pink linen (with the throw pillows). I really would like to add a pink chintz or patterned fabric to my chairs. And I’d like to swap the linen for velvet, a material I prefer. Maybe this year I’ll take the leap . . . . Some designers are going bold in some previously white-only rooms. One designer chose to introduce yellow and pinks in a once-all white room. She drew inspiration from a painting.

This is a modified reprint of a post Joni Webb recently placed on her widely popular blog called Cote de Texas. We always enjoy her insights and spot-on trend sightings. Designer Jessie Miller’s master bedroom evokes a dramatic yet intimate mood.

Jessie Miller (www.thedesigndaredevil.com) adds the sputnik design to the shelves. 42 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Another designer paired together a bright green with a soft aqua color to yellow, which she used on the curtains and a loveseat. In the same room, a tufted sofa remains white, in addition to a chair. The tufted look has really taken off. But the biggest trend this decade is in lighting fixtures. The Sputnik is THE fixture to have. It’s everywhere now. And it instantly brings a trend factor to the room. Another lighting fixture being used to update and complement a mix of classic and modern styles is the lacquered metal Mouille light. Blue is a hot color this year. While many of the blues are very bright, I prefer a softer shade. Velvet is also a trendy fabric. And, did you know that cotton velvet can be placed in the washing machine? Yes! In addition to the velvets and tufting, I’m seeing more dark painted walls, touches of gold metal, patterned rugs, and wallpaper. Design daredevil Jessie Miller created my favorite room ever in her “One Room Challenge.” She created in six weeks a stunning room – and one that offers everything the younger set is lusting after and more. First, the walls are black. And there is the crystal Sputnik from Anteriors – gorgeous! She added molding, a faux-finished fireplace and a gold bedframe. Black and white patterned floors are popular, too. Mossy green velvet, green walls and animal print rugs, such as leopard, offer a trendy look. Mixing metals is on trend, as well. Gold is back. In fact, you’ll find it mixed with silver, brass and bronze. Bar carts are a hot item, too. Welcome 2015!

This West Elm Terrace bar cart is available in antique brass (shown) and polished nickel.

Kickerillo Companies built this custom home for a couple who work in the medical field. This outdoor space is where they spend much time. Rising above a lake at Cross Creek Ranch, with dozens of windows and French doors to frame the view, this custom home is designed as a gathering place for a large and growing family. Still, it maintains privacy and the serenity for the couple that lives here. It was the picturesque location that drew homeowners Willy and Tricia Pezzia to the site. When they saw it, they knew it was the perfect place to build their dream home. The house was designed to take maximum advantage of the natural surroundings. 44 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“When we lived in Houston, we would make country drives into the Fulshear area, especially in the springtime to see the wildflowers, and we wondered if we could move here one day,” Tricia Pezzia says. When they opened an office in Katy – he is a physician and she is a registered nurse who manages his practice – they decided this was the time. The one-story Florida-style stucco house with a beautiful clay tile roof features 12- foot ceilings throughout, creamy white walls and wide plank light wood floors, underscoring a

The structure faces west opening onto a small park with the lake and a natural area to the east. It’s in a small, gated development. “When you’re inside this house, it feels like you’re on vacation,” she says. Two courtyards flank either side of the entry with French doors connecting from the dining, living and study areas. All of the windows and French doors have transoms, which keep the house light and bright. “When the weather is nice, we open all the doors and it is just wonderful,” adds Pezzia. 46 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The central Great Room features a handsome fireplace and incorporates the living, dining and kitchen areas into an ideal space for large family gatherings. The homeowners have five children and nine grandchildren, and parents who live in the Houston area, so large gatherings are frequent affairs. “We needed a large dining space that could accommodate 2025 people on a regular basis so we decided to open up the entire middle section of our home,” she says. “We have only one dining area open to the kitchen and it’s big enough to add a second table and a children's table when need-

The Pezzias wanted to easily accommodate them all. ed.”-The 5,000-square foot house is divided into three areas in a kind of H formation: the Great Room and two separate wings, which house the bedrooms and auxiliary areas. One includes the master suite and a study large enough to contain the doctor's grand piano and two desk areas for working and reading. The study opens onto a front courtyard. The north wing has two guest bedrooms – including a grandchildren’s room with two queen beds – large enough so they can all stay together when they sleep over. There’s also a large game room and three baths plus two half baths. The game room has a 73-inch TV with seating area, a pool table, a fooseball, a game table and large walk in bar. On the east side facing the lake is a 63-foot lanai with a fireplace and a full outdoor kitchen at one end. Adjacent is a 60-plus foot pool designed for water volleyball and swim races. “Our summers are spent outdoors in the pool overlooking the lake and eating outside,” Pezzia says. Interior designer Julie Dodson worked with the couple from ground-up construction to completion. Tricia Pezzia saw Dodson’s work at a “Pink Ribbon” showhouse in Memorial and liked her work. She contacted the designer and the two of them instantly clicked.

Interior designer Julie Dodson worked with the Pezzias to create a home big on comfort and style. This is their master bedroom. They spent the next nine months creating the home’s interiors together. Dodson had custom furniture built for the living area, helped shop for tiles, and the two visited Roundtop for mirrors, chairs and special accent items. “She wanted something lighter, something softer and breezier, and she was very involved. Of all the houses that I have helped to design, this is the one that people love the most,” Dodson says. This expansive living area features white linen furniture and sea grass rugs. Pizza has a passion for design and for creating a comfortable living space, even though she says she was born to be a nurse. She enjoys a crisp, clean look but sometimes likes to "shake

it up," accessorizing with accent pillows to change the look seasonally. Right now she's drawn to blue and white, but considering chartreuse for the spring. The kitchen is the heart of this home, and a large one was a must for this family. The creamy white cabinets are custom built Benedetti, and the counters are Calcutta marble with taupe and blue-gray veining from Arizona Tile. There are two full size sinks, two dishwashers and a separate refrigerator and freezer in the kitchen and a full size refrigerator in the utility room. Appliances include a Wolf commercial range, Sub zero refrigerator and freezer, Bosch dishwashers, and a Wolf microwave drawer “It’s beautiful, but livable. It’s exactly right for their needs and aesthetic,” says Dodson.

A comfortable TV room is a perfect spot for the family to gather and relax. In the other half of this space is a game table, pool table and wet bar. To landscape the site, which is just under a half acre, the homeowners used a Kickerillo-recommended landscape designer located in Richmond. The yard is trimmed in hollies, boxwoods and seasonal flowers like violas, cyclamen and alyssum. The Pezzias have lived in different areas of Houston, including the Tanglewood, Memorial, and Royal Oaks Country Club, but this is their favorite location. The couple did downsize at one point, moving into a house under 2,700 square feet. Six months later, their first grandchild was born. By the time the second arrived, they knew they needed to “upsize.” After living in this house for four years, the couple is still excited and content with the dwelling. It is their retreat from the working world.

“Our wonderful location on the lake brings something new and entertaining to watch every day. We have many seasonal ducks, cranes, egrets and the occasional alligator. There are weddings, fireworks, triathlons and special events on the hill across the lake that are fun to watch from our back patio,” Pezzia says. “We are in the midst of nature here. The lake is mostly quiet and tranquil during the summer but when a cold front blows through in the winter the water gets very rough and can even have white caps. The winds can send patio cushions flying, but are a blessing in the middle of summer. We see some of the most beautiful sunrises, sunsets and full moons," she adds.

The former countertop was brown granite. Wanting a more casual, country feel, she had a specially painted wood installed in its place.

She bought the buffet 30 years ago when on a shopping trip abroad. She decided with this last move, though, to have it stripped and painted a light blue. Summer Camps for Your Kids WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BY BARBARA CANETTI

Summer is coming – and sooner than you think. Kids will be out of school and needing something to do – and who wants them at home sitting in front of the TV all day? If thinking about summer camps for children – of all ages, know it is not too early to start making plans. Sarah Gish, creator and publisher of the Summer Book Online (www.thesummerbook.com), a free database listing more than 200 Houston-area camps and programs, says the first thing parents need to do before choosing a camp is to sit down with their children and find out what they are interested

So, first, find out what your children want to learn, find out what their passion is,” says Gish. “Summer is a great time to explore their passion.” There are literally hundreds of camps and programs available, with a wide range of activities, specializations and prices. To start sifting through the options, determine whether you are looking for a day camp or a sleep away, and how far you want to travel. Next decide if you prefer a gender-based or a religion-based camp. And third, figure out your budget. Once those large categories are selected, it is time to choose the type of camp – to name a few:

Morning Glory Ranch, near Waller, TX, offers experiential outdoor education & equine therapy wellness opportunities to all individuals, including those with special needs, to reach independence.

“There is so much kids can experience,” Gish says. “They will make new friends, get away from home, their routine and their parents. Plus, they often learn new skills at camp.” Other factors to consider: duration of programs, health and safety concerns and whether the programs offers scholarships or other pricing incentives. The lifelong memories your children receive from attending camp is as important as the social skills, independence and healthy competition they learn at camp. Parental separation is an important part of the growing up cycle, and camps are designed to help the children (and their parents!) adjust to time away from each other, she says. Camp Summit is an overnight camp in Argyle, Texas for ages 6 to adult who are developmentally delayed, physically challenged, multi-disabled or dual sensory impaired. 68 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

GARDENING

Feed the Soil,

and The Soil Will Feed Your Plants

BY ANGELA CHANDLER

Photo by By Manjula and Orin Martin, www.modernfarmer.com.

There is a decades-old adage in organic gardening – “feed the soil, not the plants.”

The best way to increase the organic matter is to add high quality compost. Leaf mold compost contains beneficial fungi and other microbes required to establish good soil biology. Compost should be worked into the top 6 inches to 8 inches of soil, and will need to be replenished regularly. Plants benefit from consistent moisture, but we don’t want soils to remain water-logged after rain or irrigation. Organic matter helps balance the water holding capacity and pore space of the soil. Drainage and aeration can be further improved by incorporating expanded shale. This porous aggregate is a one-time, permanent soil improvement.

We say this because plants do not grow independently. They grow in a partnership with a diverse colony of micro- and macroorganisms, including fungi, beneficial bacteria, micro-arthropods, nematodes, insects and worms. We are just beginning to understand the complexity of soil biology. It is thought that soils may host as much as a quarter of the world’s biodiversity. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils, hoping to focus more research and attention to the importance of the biosphere beneath our feet. Soil is the foundation of agriculture at all levels, including home gardening. When gardeners maintain healthy soil biology, healthy plants follow. It’s really not difficult to do. In fact, it is as easy as 12-3. STEP ONE Stop using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals damage soil biology, killing off many inhabitants. There are better alternatives. STEP TWO Assess the structure of your soil. Good garden soil should contain organic matter, which supports soil biology and enables good root development. Organic matter holds up to 5 times more nutrients than clay.

STEP THREE Once you have created this organically rich, well-aerated and welldrained environment, soil biology will happen. Micro-organisms will be available to break down nutrients and minerals and make them available to your plant’s roots. Nutrients should be provided via a balanced slow-release organic fertilizer, such as Arbor Gate Organic Blend. This all-natural blend provides major and minor nutrients, minerals, and mycorrhizal fungi. It also provides horticultural molasses, a natural sugar that feeds soil microbes and repels pest insects. Feeding your plants by feeding the soil is working in harmony with nature. The immediate return is strong, healthy plants. The long range benefits include cleaner ground water and soil that is more resilient to both floods and drought. It’s a sustainable method we can all practice, starting today.

Angela Chandler is an associate at The Arbor Gate (www.arborgate.com),15635 FM 2920 in Tomball, which offers an array of seasonal garden-related classes, a well-stocked nursery and shops filled with decorative items for home and outside. 76 house& home | February 2015 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
