Let’s Mardi Gras, No Matter Where It Began! by mARy ChAvoUsTie
The birthplace of Mardi Gras? If you guessed Louisiana, with this year’s over-the-top festival set Feb. 9-13, you might have some explaining to do to the people of Mobile, Ala. Yes, Louisiana folks may argue their right to “first” with d’Iberville’s landing in 1699 at “La Point du Mardy Gras,” just south of what is now New Orleans. But Mobile claims the oldest annual carnival in the United States started in 1703, as well as the oldest carnival parade and float. It’s all about defining celebration! Inside the William & Emily Hearin Mobile Carnival Museum, visitors are enchanted by four galleries that include meticulously detailed robes and jeweled crowns intertwined among stories of mystic societies and MoonPies. Though some believe “Raising Cain” has a Biblical connotation, Mobilians believe it most assuredly ties with those who shortly after Joe Cain’s passing came to the cemetery to “Raise Cain” to rekindle his spirit. emember when a backyard swimming pool was just a big rectangle with a float and a diving board? Those days are gone. Contemporary swimming pools are more visually appealing with landscaping, resort-style amenities and high-tech functionality. “If you have a beautiful pool, there’s a reason to spend time and to entertain in your backyard,” says Toni Denzer, senior designer with Laguna Pools & Designs Ltd. in Houston. “It’s like a luxury vacation. Even if you don’t go swimming, you can enjoy the serenity of the pool and the relaxing sound of the water.” Today’s pools are integrated with landscaping and other entertainment areas, like outdoor kitchens, to extend the functional use of a homeowner’s outdoor space. “Pools bring families together, and they provide a place for exercise and relaxation,” says David Vollmer of Vollmer Custom Pools LLC.

SHOP AROUND If you’re planning a backyard pool project, local builders recommend you do your homework and explore your options. Talk with friends and neighbors who have pools about their recommendations. Visit a local pool showroom where you can see actual pools and amenities. “When you evaluate prospective builders, it is important to know how long they have been in business and make sure they offer a follow-up service when the pool is complete,” Denzer says. Large or small, swimming pools are a major investment. So know your budget before you dive in. A medium-sized custom pool with water elements, fire bowls, up-to-date cleaning and sanitation, lighting and automation will cost $80,000 and up.

“If you are planning to build a pool, now is exactly the right time to get started,” says Nathen Martens, a designer with Pacific Pools Inc. of Houston. “By the time you settle on the right design, a contract, the necessary permits and allow nine to 12 weeks construction, depending on size and specifics, you could still have your pool ready by the time the weather gets warm.” And when it is warm, then hot and then really hot, what do the pros think about chillers for the pool? There’s no consensus on that one. Chillers can lower the water temperature as much as 10 degrees. “I have a chiller in my personal pool and I love it, but it’s not for everyone,” Vollmer says.

Design trends shift overtime, and pools are no exception. Here are 10 tips and trends from pool professionals to consider in project planning. 1. GO SIMPLE, GO SMALLER. The style and shape of pools are shifting from the once-popular free-form design to simple, clean lines and less decking. Large custom pools are still being built but as a rule, new pools are smaller and every bit as luxurious. “In the Houston metro area, the trend is definitely contemporary: Sleek lines and sheer descents — that is, a sheet of water coming out of the wall,” says Vollmer.

2. A SUNNY SHELF. Having a sun shelf has become the standard for most custom pools, although the width and design vary. “Tanning ledges with bubblers are popular and practical because they create a shallow lounge space where adults can relax and small children, even pets, can enjoy the pool,” says Martens. Denzer adds, “Our designs often incorporate an umbrella into the sun shelf by putting a hole in the gummite with a plastic sleeve about five or six inches deep that the umbrella slides into. When it’s not in use, there’s a cover. Customers love it.” 3. RESORT OR BEACH ENTRY. Consider a beach entry. The pool has no lip, so it’s like walking into the ocean. 4. WATERWORKS. Popular amenities include scuppers, sheer descents, bubblers, water bowls, rock waterfalls and Laminar jets, which shoot streams of water that are colored by LED lighting. Vollmer says these can be controlled via smart phone or remote. 5. FIRE OPTIONS. The glow of a fire against a shimmering pool creates an almost magical atmosphere. That’s why fire bowls, fire

pits and fire within a rock waterfall are some of the hottest trends in pool design. 6. NOT SO DEEP. Pools are not being built as deep as they used to be, and for good reason. This allows a larger shallow area in the pool where people actually spend most of their pool time, says Denzer.

7. POOL DECKING. There are many choices for pool decking. Travertine pavers, spray or sun decking and stamped concrete are only a few of the choices. “Laguna Pools specializes in acrylic inlaid decking, a dressy option, that goes over concrete and is not slick. It has several pattern choices and is extremely durable,” says Denzer. Another trend is porcelain tiles. “For the past 15 years, higher-ends pools used travertine for decking, but now the trend is toward porcelain tiles. It’s got a rough finish so it’s not slippery, and it isn’t hot. Also, it comes in all different sizes. Right now, I’m doing a deck with tiles that are two feet by four feet,” Vollmer says. Vollmer uses an Eco finish, which is blown on top of the plaster or pebble bottom to make it smooth. “It lasts longer and it doesn’t fade,” he says. 8. SANITATION. There are now choices in pool sanitation including salt, chlorine, ozone and UV sanitation, sometimes in combination. Professional builders say there are pros and cons for all of these. How you choose to keep your pool fresh depends on your individual preferences. 9. IN-FLOOR CLEANING SYSTEM. Builders recommend spending dollars upfront to keep maintenance to a minimum. “The Paramount in-floor cleaning system is a great cleaning option for your pool,” Denzer says. “It allows you to spend more time enjoying your pool and less time cleaning your pool. It is built into your pool shell and is engineered to clean your entire pool, including your floor, steps, benches and spa.” 10. AUTOMATION. Automation is another trend that is almost standard in custom pools, whether you use a remote, a smart phone or an iPad. These will operate your pool, spa, lights and water features with the touch of a button. If you want a close-up look at custom pool choices, Laguna Pools has a showroom with nine display pools. alk into any kitchen, and the first things that stand out are the countertops. The color, material and style of those work surfaces selected set the tone and style of the room. And there is so much to choose from. In fact, because of the wide range of options, homeowners are sometimes overwhelmed with all the different choices: Natural or man-made, light or dark or shiny or matte, as well as the bigger item — budget. In the past few decades, granite was the No. 1 countertop choice. But designers have introduced to their clients other options that require less care and maintenance, while still providing scratch, stain and heat resistance.
TOP PICKS Local contractors and designers have watched as granite as taken a back seat to the more durable quartz, a man-made product, or its similar natural product, quartzite, says Tara Brown, a designer with Lippold Custom Homes. “We have definitely seen a decrease in the use of granite,” she says. “Clients are moving towards clean and sophisticated palettes. Quartzite or quartz provides a simple and neutral surface that is not only durable, but has the versatility to stand the test of time as trends evolve. In addition, quartz requires no maintenance. There are no special cleaners required. It never has to be sealed. It is stain and chip resistant.” Engineered quartz, like “Calacatta Novus” with a veined marble look, is an attractive alternative to granite and easy to clean. The quartz is easier to clean, and I think it is more accessible,” Godeau says, adding he recently installed a new counter in his home, choosing the veined marble-look quartz. “Unless you look really close, you cannot tell it is not marble.” Quartz is a bit more expensive than granite, and the veining adds more expense.

Natural stones come in different finishes from honed (matte, silky-smooth), polished (glossy, shiny) and textured. Brown says the leathered quartzite is very popular, with its textured surface showing pits and fissures of the stone, rather than the imperfections evident in the polished surfaces. The leathered look appears to have more depth than the honed and because of the finish, it hides stains, smudges and fingerprints better. In addition, with the leather finish the natural pores of the rock are closed; therefore, stains are less apt to occur. The leathered finish requires less sealing than the polished or honed. For a warmer look, homeowners are still choosing butcher block work stations, as well as the budget-friendly laminate, which now comes in oodles of colors and finishes. “Certainly, laminate is the best value all the way around, and it will last for 40 years. But it is limited in terms of shapes and edges,” Godeau says.

EDGING & BASINS In terms of the edges, Godeau notes the timeless favorite bullnose, a classic rounded edge, is now being replaced by the square edge (clean lines, 90-degree angle), ogee (concave arch that flows into a convex arch), the beveled edge (indentation) and the mitered edge (seamless edge between the top of the countertop and a second piece of stone to create a specialty edge). And one of the latest new trends in kitchens and bathrooms is selecting integrated sinks on the countertops. Graham Cracker Crust
1 ½ cups graham cracker crumbs ½ cup ground almonds, slightly toasted ½ cup sugar 8 tablespoons butter, melted
Lemon Filling
½ cup sour cream 1 cup granulated sugar 4 large eggs ½ cup lemon juice 1 tablespoon lemon zest 6 ounces fresh whole raspberries 34 house& home | February 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
Instructions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs and almonds with the sugar and butter. Mix with a wooden spoon. Set a 10-inch tart pan with removable bottom on a sheet pan. Place the crumbs in the tart pan and press them into the bottom and mold to the edges of the pan using your fingertips. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Set aside until cool. To make the filling, in a medium bowl or the bowl of an electric mixer, combine the sour cream and sugar. Whisk in the eggs, and then add the lemon juice and lemon zest. Pour the filling in the cooled tart shell. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from the oven and set it on a rack to cool for 1 hour. Refrigerate the tart. Top it with berries a few hours before serving. Yield: 8 servings

T
his house in the Riverside Terrace neighborhood stands out. Among the many colonials, mid-century moderns and traditional homes is a new kid in town: A contemporary one-story structure with lots of windows and angular rooflines that defy gravity. Dave Marshak and Pat Ward left their two-story home in Old Braeswood and teamed up with James M Evans of Collaborative Designworks to come up with a 3,500square-foot wood/stucco house on a large corner lot that is very different from its neighbors. It replaces a dilapidated structure that was a neighborhood blight and adds a different feature to this residential community near the Texas Medical Center.
FROM THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN The exterior, a combination of durable golden-brown Siberian latch wood coupled with white stucco walls and accented with brown brick screening walls, was designed with many windows to allow for lots of natural light inside. The interiors are almost all white, SherwinWilliams’ “Extra White,” as is the concrete floor created by Texas Concrete Effects with shards of blue, green and amber glass embedded, grinded and then polished and sealed, creating a whimsical yet sophisticated look throughout the house. Only the living room has a different floor. It is covered in the wood matching the house’s exterior. The living room, which is almost a flow-through room connecting the kitchen with the master suite, is lined on both sides with three sets of 9-foot-tall sliding doors. The front set of doors reveals a small private deck facing the street and enclosed with the decorative brick. The back wall of the living room opens onto the yard and large

pool, along with the Marshak’s garden (and an outdoor kitchen in the future). The living room is furnished only with a couch, two chairs and a family heirloom: A walnut-colored harvest table located under the television. The table, Marshak says, belonged to his mother and it “was the centerpiece” of her house in La Jolla, Calif. “It was already quite old when my parents bought it in Philadelphia about 60 years ago, and we recently refinished it here,” he says. “It now has leaves folded down, as it would during storage. During harvest time, when there were extra people to feed, it would have been opened up and used. Replicas of these tables have recently become

popular, but this is the real thing.” The kitchen is an open-air room, with sleek bookmatched walnut cabinets from Stonewood Studios and a long Silestone (“Zeus” white matte) work surface facing the dining area and living room. “Pat and I enjoy cooking, and now there is plenty of room for us to do that at the same time. Even when guests congregate in the kitchen, they are out of the way, thanks to the peninsula design of the countertop,” he says. Additional seating is available at the counter, as well as at a small breakfast niche in front of windows in the kitchen.

OVERALL DESIGN The house was designed in three sections: The master suite, the public area and a two-bedroom guest wing with its own lounge and bathroom. “They wanted something separate from their room to give their guests privacy,” Evans says, explaining the grand plan of the house. The well-lit lounge in the guest rooms is also home to the Marshak’s orchids, which seem to thrive in the sunny location. And an attached greenhouse accessible from the back of the house will be filled with seedlings and sprouts this spring. “One year I bought some tomato plants a little early, and we had an unusually cool spring. As a result, we had to keep the plants in our breakfast area for a while,” Marshak says. “Now that won’t be necessary. We are going to install a grow light and start seedlings in there before putting them into the beds. We may eventually add a pottery studio for Pat in the greenhouse.” Each of the couple has a private office: Ward’s is in the vestibule in the front of the house off the foyer, while Marshak’s is on the other side of the house near the bed-

ith three 500-year floods occurring between 2015 and 2017, feeling safe in one’s own home and protecting investments are of paramount concern throughout the Houston metropolitan area. There is hopeful news for some affected homeown-

your life — and money, says Lynne Skinner, a Greenwood King realtor. Skinner, a woman in her 60s, is one of many flood victims grappling with what to do next. She says of her lovely single-story home on a tree-lined street in Bellaire, “It was very shocking to suddenly have one foot of water in the house,” recalling the unbelievable day of Aug. 27, 2017. A long-time resident of this neighborhood, Skinner says her house never had flooded — “not even close.” She was not prepared because nothing ever was indicative of her home being at risk, not once in all 35-plus years of living there.

Skinner says today she is living with her daughter while looking long and hard at her options. At near retirement, she aims to be fiscally smart about her recovery. Skinner’s Greenwood King colleague, Jordan Longerot, is in a somewhat different boat. But, no doubt about it, he is paddling similar waters. He knows that he and his physician-wife, who are both in their mid-30s, will choose what is right for them — but it is sure to be expensive. Good news for them isthey hope to recoupe their losses over time. They are currently living with his parents while they mull over options. The Longerots’ home is in Meyerland, an area with an easy commute to the Texas Medical Center. Unfortunately, it has flooded all three recent times. Longerot says before they bought there, the realtor in him made him look to ensure flooding was a nearly impossible happening. His and Skinner’s stories are, sadly enough, all too common in this metropolitan area. Skinner and Longerot both now have close and personal experiences that allow them to help others move forward. The options, they say, include possibly elevating a flood-area and damaged house, rebuilding it or selling it for lot value.
NEW BUILDING CODES The city of Houston and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) now advise that if rebuilding a home, it will be necessary to lift the house a mini64 house& home | February 2018 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net
mum of two feet above the highest flood level. Before granting a permit, officials with the city of Houston’s Flood Management Office (FMO) may need to do an inspection of the home, understand the nature of the work to be done and review the costs associated with the work. The department also notes it accepts only current elevation certificates. Houston’s FMO is part of the Public Works and Engineering Department located at the Houston Permit Center, 1002 Washington Ave. Longerot says rebuilding is an option he and his wife are considering. But building a custom house, which many of his neighbors are doing, will likely take up to 24 months and cost between $175 and $215 a square foot.
ELEVATION Elevating an existing house is another option, and also one that the Longerots are actively considering. He says signage of two companies, in particular, have popped up all around his neighborhood. They are Arkitektura Development Inc. in Kemah and Planet Three Elevation — and there are others. The companies handle large-slab homes. Often included in the price to elevate: Utilities/plumbing, restoring steps, stairs, landings, decks and adding a decorative skirt or foundation wall. Of course, remodeling costs within are separate from the elevation costs and depend on what level of restoration and updating is done to the house. The companies claim nothing needs to be removed from the

house — not even from the closets and shelves inside. More than 90 percent of their work centers around elevating oneand two-story homes. While costs vary, Longerot received a bid of about $80 a square foot to go this route. “Some of the elevated homes, if they are older, may never match the value of the new construction,” says Longerot. That may be something to consider. Elevation grants for about $30,000 are available to homeowners who have received “substantial damage” or who have had repetitive flood claims. HOUSE FOR SALE If selling a flooded and damaged house, Longerot says a mortgage company will not lend money toward an uninhabitable house, so basically homeowners will be looking at getting lot value only. structure, as these obstructions reduce airflow and the amount of strong sunlight the plants receive. In other words, more sun produces more flowers. When there is a fence or wall, the plants only receive light from one side, causing phototropism of the plants, or growing to the light. Reduction of light and airflow encourages pests and diseases to set up house, as the plants next to a structure form a secure space from wind, rain and the elements. Roses need a minimum of six hours of direct sun, not filtered by trees or buildings. Using a north or eastern exposure can also be a hindrance if there are trees in the neighborhood, across the street or if you back up to a wooded area. So don’t just look at your garden space: Look around to see what could possibly impact your success with growing roses.

Since 1887, W. Kordes Sohne is one of the largest rose breeding programs in the world. Now, fourth-generation Kordes’ continued goals of breeding are: • Disease resistance against fungal attacks such as black spot, powdery mildew and downy mildew • Long-lasting, self-cleaning and fragrant flower qualities • Vigorous growth habit with good branching Trailing garden roses take a minimum of seven years before releasing into the market, and it is this strict criterion that makes Kordes roses great for the Gulf Coast. Kordes roses are available in “Hybrid Tea” (single-stem single flower), “Floribunda” (cluster of flowers on one stem) and climbers. “Beverly,” “Pink Enchantment” and “Iceberg” are three you can find at The Arbor Gate. Old Garden Roses or Antique Roses have been rustled in Texas cemeteries for years. A local group called The Texas Rose Rustlers meets and collects roses growing in cemeteries for propagation, as these roses receive virtually no care and are vigorous, hardy and disease resistant. Antique roses, or OGRs are not grafted; they grow on their own roots and many of these are on the Texas A&M Earth-Kind Plant List, such as “The Fairy,” “Ducher,” “Georgetown Tea” and “Cecil Brunner” (“Sweetheart” rose), to name a few. This group of roses came from Conrad-Pyle, a breeder who introduced us to the “Knock-Out Rose,” which has become a legend in the landscape for disease resistance and continuous flowers. Drift roses do not have a fragrance, but that is replaced by the almost continuous bloom as a landscape rose.

PRUNING ROSES Heavy pruning of roses should be done by midFebruary, which reduces plant structure by 50-60 percent. Remove all small twiglets that will never produce a bloom, as this is why they are called suckers — sucking energy from the plant. For canes that are entwined or rubbing, the lesser should be removed. Besides regular deadheading, with a 10-month growing season, roses should be pruned again late summer to early fall to produce wonderful fall blooms, as roses love the cooler weather. Any time you prune, you should always follow with an application of organic fertilizer around each plant topdressed with 1-2 inches of compost to promote new root

growth and feed the plant. Remember to remove the mulch before feeding and composting and apply to bare soil. As with all plants, it is best to build your flowerbeds with expanded shale worked deep into the heavy soil, along with organic fertilizer and good compost. The shale creates air spaces in the soil for deep rooting and breathing; the organic fertilizer converts a sterile soil by calling soil microbes to help build a healthy, living soil that supports life and growth; and the compost is an organic material that acts as the binder for both.
