ove is in the air, and we adore the February issue of Houston House & Home with its focus on outdoor living. For those of us along the Texas Gulf Coast, this is that sweet spot in the year when we can enjoy the back yard with family and friends, get excited about gardening again, and make a plan for surviving the upcoming summer. From native plants, xeriscaping, butterfly gardens and synthetic turf, to swimming pools that make the most of designer finishes and automation, plus outdoor lighting to show it all off, our Project, Product and Editor’s Picks sections help point the way. For the ultimate in brightly colored shrubs and flowers, look no further than the 84th Annual Azalea Trail, our Gardening focus for this month. We’re featuring a couple of homes that are built to withstand the next flood. With the winter we just had, it’s clear that extreme rain events are the new normal. One home — which we discovered on last year’s Weird Homes Tour — was actually raised up ten feet, creating a shady outdoor spot for year-round recreation and entertainment. Another property, built by Stone Acorn Builders in Braes Heights, was designed with resilience in mind: Permeable pavers in the driveway and walkway, French drains, and an elevated base offer protection without compromising aesthetic appeal.

We’re not sure anybody loves art as much as local gallerist Lloyd Gite, who let us into his home for an up close look at his extensive private collection. Discover creative ways to hang and display works of art and embrace the joy of living in a colorfilled space. If seeking a romantic hideaway for Valentine’s Day or just a sweet night out, take a culinary adventure with our look at local eateries that flaunt tasteful fare and decadent desserts. Or fire up the backyard grill and try your hand at our elegant grilled tuna dish in Recipe. And, if you find yourself single this time around — or are just looking for a new bestie — don’t overlook Alistair, our adoptable Pet of the Month. There’s a lot going on this month and next. From home shows at NRG, Conroe and Cy-Fair; treasurehunting for Depression era glass, antiques and vintage finds; plus the blockbuster van Gogh exhibit coming to the MFAH; turn to our Calendar for all of the details. And whether you’ve already got a green thumb, or want to learn more, sign up for one (or more) gardening classes, then pick up something new at Urban Harvest’s fruit tree sale. There’s no time like the present. From our home to yours, Susie Tommaney

ool weather is (almost) behind us, so it's time to look to the outdoors for recreation and relaxation before the sweltering heat of summer takes hold. With all the rains and early snow we've seen this past winter, our gardens have taken a beating. So why not look to the pros for an outdoor spruce up? A landscape architect can find a solution to problems like improper drainage, shady areas were nothing seems to grow, or the raging battle between St. Augustine and Bermuda grasses for control of your yard. But more than that, these professionals have the knowledge and experience to envision a backyard transformation that can be enjoyed for years to come. Think about what’s important to you and your family. A well-designed project should be as unique as your personal style. Whether you need a place for the kids to kick the ball

around, a chance to explore square foot gardening, privacy from that neighbor’s prying eyes, or year-round color, there’s a solution for every need. This also is an opportunity to increase the square footage of your home by expanding the living space into the great outdoors. Imagine entertaining family and friends under the shade of a pergola, perhaps with an outdoor kitchen, fire feature or bubbling fountain. Archadeck Outdoor Living can design all of these features, and much more. Break away from the electronics and listen to the birds chirp in the trees while enjoying a morning cup of coffee, a glass of wine at sunset, or spending the afternoon playing backgammon, Rummikub and dominoes.

way to get ideas for your own project, but also to understand their expectations. For example, some will ask for a portion of the design fee up front, and won’t release those plans until it’s been paid in full. As the customer, you’ll want to know if your project manager will supervise the job through installation, if they offer continued maintenance after the project is complete, and if there are options if a tree doesn’t thrive. Are they licensed to install LED lighting or wire an outdoor kitchen? Some companies will work in conjunction with your own contractor, letting your gardener bring those plans to life. Begin the process first with a phone call, and then by meeting for a consultation. They’ll ask about your wants and needs, discuss budgetary parameters, and talk about different landscaping and hardscaping possibilities. They’ll need to visit the site to evaluate the topography, soils, water resources, wildlife and vegetation before drawing up a plant list, conceptual designs or drawings. Depending on the scale

20 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

of the project, they might suggest a multi-phase plan that can be implemented over time. Perhaps you’ve always dreamed of a pool but your children are still in their toddler phase. Or you can’t afford everything on your wish list right away but, once those two cars are paid off, you’ll be able to finish building out that outdoor kitchen. So what does your dream back yard look like? From manicured topiaries to whimsical fairytale gardens and outdoor living rooms, make this the year of getting out of the house.

SPECIALTY GARDENS Eco-minded folks should consider xeriscaping, a type of lowwater landscaping that minimizes water use by incorporating plants that are well-adapted to our climate. Selecting plants that are heat, cold and drought tolerant takes the hassle out of yard maintenance and, when done well, still includes bright punches of color. Kabloom Landscaping can help create your own paradise with projects starting at $5,000.

No time, no problem? If you don't have the time or inclination to mow, or there's something about your yard that makes it difficult to grow grass, then consider synthetic turf. It's great for creating a small putting green, a cushioned playground area, or going all out for that golf course feel. The folks at Green Links Inc. know all the ins and outs of synthetic turf and can get you started with a free estimate.

GREEN THUMB DIY Do-it-yourselfers will want to brush up their skills by attending one of the classes at The Arbor Gate, a Tomball-area garden center and plant nursery that goes the extra mile by bringing in local experts and horticulturists to share their secrets. Upcoming classes cover pruning, roses, herbs, vegetables and even how to attract bluebirds; read more in our Calendar section. For resilience, head over to Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques, Inc., where staffers will point you toward the right selections for our clay soil, hot summers, long droughts and sporadic flooding. “The days of layered rows of azaleas, roses and tons of flowers seems to be over,” says owner Joshua Kornegay. “The biggest trend with the younger set is a zen look.” He suggests getting that modern, mid-century feel by creating a simple checkerboard or plaid patio design by using concrete slabs interspersed by low evergreens or dwarf mondo grass. Kornegay suggests replacing lawns, or large sections of lawn, with long stretches of gravel stone and adding clusters of pots. Instead of high and low shrubs, add drama by mixing tall and narrow pots with shorter, rounder companions. “Filling them with simple plantings of stark, structural plants, such as yucca and agave, will lend a Frank Lloyd Wright-ish display,” he adds. “Some tall and columnar, others looking like rosettes or exploding fireworks.” 22 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

JUMP RIGHT IN New Pool Trends for 2019 Focus on Technology and Design By Marsha Canright

T

op trends for Houston area custom swimming pools include sleek lines, interior finishes that deliver that deep blue ocean look, artistic waterline tiles, and easy automation to control temperature, lighting, water and fire features, even filtration. Creating a comfortable venue for entertaining and exercise is key for every new or remodeled pool but, in today’s market, the design and aesthetic appeal of the pool are equally important to homeowners, builders say. We checked with the pros and here are the top trends for 2019.

AUTOMATION A high level of user-friendly automation is probably the most significant trend in new or re-imagined pools, and is likely to become even more versatile. “Today’s automation options make operating your pool 24 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

and spa a snap. These systems give pool owners a convenient way to program and schedule pool functions — from filtration to activating a waterfall,” says Jim Sere, general manager of Blue Haven Pools & Spas in Houston. “For example, you can program your pool lights to turn on at dusk each day, for the cleaner to run at a certain time, or to take advantage of the energy savings possible with a two-speed pump.” When it comes to pool operations, most automation systems are able to work with PCs, Macs, iPads, iPhones and Android devices, and many connect to a remote platform that allows homeowners to manage their pool from anywhere, any time. “For example, during your evening commute in traffic, you can use your smart phone to fire up the spa — so it’s hot and bubbling as soon as you arrive home,” says Sere.

ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETIC “There is an interest in clean line pools, mostly rectangular, complementing the home’s architecture,” says David Vollmer of Vollmer Custom Pools, LLC. Also, the color of the water can be altered with new Eco finishes. He adds that this can be done in several colors or blended. Waterline tile treatments provide an artistic touch by way of glass and illustrated tiles. Customers who are building new pools are looking for a recreational depth (three to five and a half feet), which works well for water games and lap swimming, he says. Still, Vollmer says he does occasionally build a diving pool.

SUN SHELVES, LEDGES AND BUILT-IN BARS A strong trend in pool design is the tanning ledge or sun shelf, as well as built-in bars. “A sun shelf is a wide ledge with about 12 inches of water which continues to be popular. It’s a place where you can sit and have a glass of wine or relax on a chaise lounge,” says 26 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Nathan Martens with Pacific Pools of Houston. “It’s also a great kid’s play area.” Ledges are usually fitted with bubblers, jets of compressed air that create a bubbling effect. Taking a cue from the hotel industry, swim-up bars or inpool conversation areas are also becoming more common, often in tandem with an outdoor kitchen area, he says. Chillers are another trend, not specific to Houston but certainly a reasonable accommodation to our steamy summer weather. Chillers reduce the temperature of the water, making it more comfortable for recreation, he adds.

WATER AND FIRE FEATURES; LED LIGHTING Straight-line pools with fire and water features continue to be popular for custom pools, according to Mark Simonton of Simonton Pool Consultants. Fashionable water features include sheer descents, spillways, fountains, waterfalls and laminar jets, which are streams of water that arch into the swimming pool. “They have a clean, contemporary look with

27

timeless appeal,” says Simonton. Fire bowls and elevated fire pits also bring a dramatic flair to a pool, especially at night. Simonton uses automation to make the most of water and fire elements. “As far as special features that add pizzazz to a pool project, I’d say popular options are a raised beam with sheer descents, lighted, and natural scuppers with columns to create a visually appealing cascade of water. Lighted laminar jets look great with a straight line pool but can be a bit pricey for a family project,” he says. LED lighting also has become the standard for pool projects, adding depth, dimension and energy efficiency. “We use only color LED lighting in our projects, which can be synced and color-controlled. The lighting industry has been expanding and now the lights are smaller, brighter and can be placed out of the pool water. We only install 12 volt lighting on our projects for an added level of safety,” adds Simonton.

ARTISTIC MATERIALS

RESOURCES

There was a time when backyard pools were completed with a plaster finish but, according to Adams Tile & Plaster, the beauty of pools and back yards now can be enhanced with glass tiles, pebble finishes and even artistic mosaics. Custom stonework, flagstone decking and ledger stone are also popular with custom stone coping from travertine or brick.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT EQUIPMENT Homeowners are always looking for energy efficiency in pool equipment and “we support that,” Mark Simonton says. “There is a lot available on the market now but we recommend a 2.7 variable speed Hayward Tristar pump,” he says, adding that automatic robotic cleaners also are gaining in popularity due to their energy efficiency. In-floor cleaners are also a good alternative for homeowners who don’t want to see any type of cleaner in their pool, he advises. The in-floor can be installed on the benches and the spa. Other options that help to cut costs include pumps and heat pumps. A variable speed pump offers flexibility and can help you to control water flow and energy use.

Amalfi doesn’t serve this grilled tuna with Romesco sauce year-round, so plan B is to try this dish at home. Photo courtesy of Amalfi Ristorante Italiano & Bar

GRILLED TUNA WITH ROMESCO SAUCE

W

hip up this easy yet elegant fish dish inspired by the one occasionally served at Amalfi Ristorante Italiano & Bar. Romesco is a bold red bell pepper-based sauce enriched with roasted garlic, nuts and olive oil originating in Catalonia, Spain. Pair it with a light-bodied, spicy grenache or a silky pinot noir like our pick from Imagery Estate Winery (see page 32.)

INGREDIENTS

2 jars of roasted red peppers 1/2 cup almonds, chopped 1 slice white bread, torn in pieces

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon honey

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1 1/2 pounds very fresh tuna steaks (3 to 4 steaks, about 1 inch thick)

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

34 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

METHOD Make the Romesco sauce: In a food processor, combine the red peppers, almonds, bread, vinegar, honey and smoked paprika. Pulse to combine. With the motor running, add the olive oil and puree until combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

To make the fish: Preheat an outdoor grill or a grill pan to medium high. Drizzle the tuna with olive oil and generously season with salt and pepper on both sides. Grill for about two minutes on each side. Remove from the grill, tent with foil and let stand for a few minutes. Slice the tuna and serve with the Romesco sauce.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

Local gallerist Lloyd Gite painted the exterior of his home in a bright lime green, a color that was inspired by a pair of shoes he loved.

“I love color and I wanted lots of pops of color in my home.” — Lloyd Gite

Natural light, colorful walls and eclectic furnishings work well together. Gite buys what he loves and says art should be in every room.

42 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Upon entering the house, the natural light, colorful walls and eclectic furnishings work together to make a statement. He had two skylights installed at the top of the stairs, as well as two long openings in the white oak floors in the entryway to allow for even more light. “I love color and I wanted lots of pops of color in my home,” says Gite, pointing to the mustard colored custom cabinets in the kitchen, the green tile backsplash and the lively artwork dancing on the walls. The lime green exterior was inspired by a pair of shoes in that color that Gite loved. A series of photographs he took on his African travels line one wall, but the rest of the art was selected and purchased in Africa. In the adjacent dining room, a large table surrounded by six Christopher Guy high back chairs brings additional color and brightness to the area. Because he wanted to display the art without artificial lighting, most of the many windows are uncovered, bathing the rooms with sunlight and bright images. The adjacent living room – which is connected to the

kitchen/dining area by an outdoor porch with sliding doors on both sides – is framed by six-foot-high red vases and a wall of built-in bookcases, with mementos from travels, books and smaller art pieces. Also, in every room and on almost every open tabletop, Gite has hundreds of photos taken with him and famous celebrities whom he interviewed during his career as a television news reporter with KRIV-TV and as a correspondent with the BET network. The house was designed to accommodate the art, which he has been collecting since 1976 and his first trip to Africa. Light switches and plugs are all low on the walls so that they will not interfere with hanging art and sculptures in each room. Even bathrooms and the powder room are backdrops for large pictures and statues, as well as an architecturally interesting light fixture resembling a sea urchin that casts interesting shadows on the wall. “I buy what I love and items that resonate with me. I want to share this art with people that may not be familiar to them,” he says. The third floor of the house continues the artistic journey. Two bedrooms are filled with unique pieces, such as a collection of feathery juju hats from Cameroon hovering over his bed. The adjoining ensuite bathrooms carry on the theme with large and small art objects decorating walls and floor spaces. A chandelier over his large soaking bathtub is a departure from the rest of the décor: it hung over his mother’s dining table for 40 years and he retrieved it when her house was sold.

Hanging in the bedroom are a series of doors from an old church in Mexico, another parting from Gite’s decorative style. But, he says, he saw these and “I had to have them.” He created a reading room – although he doesn’t use it for that. Instead it is a quiet room, decorated with Chinese furniture, and the focal point in the room are the windows and the view of downtown Houston. “This is just a peaceful place. I love the light that comes in here and I can see the sculpture garden down below,” says Gite. Down the hallway is Gite’s office, his favorite room. A small outside patio is attached to the office, which can separate itself from the hallway with a wall of sliding doors. “If I have a party, I can close this off to keep folks out but it is still part of the house and you can see in and see the art,” he says. The hallway is covered with paintings and drawings, as well as a pair of hand-carved Kenyan doors and a series of masks and figures. “I think there should be art in every room – even the garage,” he says. “Anywhere you go in the house, you should be able to appreciate it.”

IN SEARCH OF HIGHER GROUND The Flood Waters Rose High, So They Raised The House Even Higher By Sam Byrd photoS By thanin viriyaki photography

W

e discovered Pam and Drew Shefman's house on the 2018 Weird Homes Tour ® Houston and wanted to know more about this mid-century modern abode in Meyerland. The 3,000 square foot house features four bedrooms, a main living den, a formal dining room, a cook’s kitchen, utility room, two and a half baths and closets galore. There's one more impossible-to-miss feature: the house stands ten feet above the ground to mitigate damage from the flood-prone area.

“We hosted a party with 120 people all under the house. It’s a perfect party space.” — Pam Shefman

The Shefman family suffered losses during both the Memorial Day flood of 2015 and the Tax Day flood of 2016 with a respective 27 inches and 13 inches of water invading the house. Their friends said it was just a freak occurrence and that it wouldn't happen again, but Pam and Drew thought otherwise. "Our opinion was that it would flood again, but we didn’t know when," says Pam. The couple looked at two alternatives. They would either wait for the next flood to hit and

then build a new flood-proof home, or they would elevate the current house. In weighing the alternatives they knew, if they built a new home, they would have to be out of the house for a year. If they elevated it, they would be out about three months. "Between the exchange of the amount of time and stress in combination with the costs, elevation was the best choice for us," says Pam. They hired Kemah-based Arkitektura Development, Inc., a turnkey operation, to handle the task. The family lodged in an RV parked in their driveway while the digging started at the beginning of August 2017. Mother Nature had other plans. As the month continued, Hurricane Harvey formed and was projected to drop unprecedented rain in Texas. Arkitektura tripled its workforce for the Meyerland project to lift the house nearly five feet just before the tropical storm wreaked its havoc. Once the area had dried, the crew finished the foundation, installed new piers and beams for structural stability, then lifted the house once more to its final height.

Pam and Drew Shefman, their children, and the family dog Sandy are all relieved to know that their home is now equipped to handle high waters.

What the Shefmans got in return for lifting the house was not only protection from flood waters but also a completely open space underneath the home. They knew it wouldn't be good to use the space for bedrooms, so they flexed their creativity to find the next best use. "I grew up in Pennsylvania where people played in their basement. We wanted a place for our kids where they could go kick a soccer ball if it was raining," says Pam. "Our daughter really likes aerial work, so we can hang ropes or her yoga swing. It opens up right to the pool." The feel of the outdoors with the convenience of being shaded during Houston's warmer months makes this space versatile for almost any activity. "We go out in the back yard every day. The kids like to play out there. Our son loves to play Nerf. They have Nerf wars. We have doors off the side so they can run into the lot next door," says Pam. "We hosted a party with 120 people all under the house. It’s a perfect party space. We’ve also

roller-skated under the house. We’ve played tennis underneath the house." The home is shaped like the letter J, with the middle space of the curve designated for their pool. Now that the house is elevated, what was once a patio now has a different purpose. "Now that we've lifted the house, it’s a deck. We [watch] great sunsets [from] an upper patio. It’s been really nice to sit outside and watch the sun set. We’re also ten feet higher than the other houses, so we have a better view," Pam added. The extra space is so convenient that even the family dog, Sandy, loves it — especially if water is involved. "Our dog loves to chase the water from the downspouts. She will chase the water from the water guns in the pool," adds Pam. The Shefmans are waiting for the homeowners association to approve permits for extra work to be performed on the property, but one project they recently tackled was covering the backyard stairs leading to the house. 56 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

FARMHOUSE MODERN Braes Heights Project Blends Resilience, Texture and Light by SuSie Tommaney PhoToS by Gary FounTain

W

hat would a dream home look like if you could imagine all the possibilities? When a family-owned property succumbed to the floodwaters after Tropical Storm Harvey, brother-and-sister team Sarah Lavine-Kass and Benjamin Lavine set out to build the perfect abode in its place. Stone Acorn Builders, a family-owned business founded by Sarah, and its inhouse architect razed that Braes Heights bungalow and set to work on a modern farmhouse-style home that embraces the past through reclaimed finishes and textures while preparing for the future with built-in resilience. The new 6,076-square foot home incorporates flood tolerant features, including an elevated base that’s sealed with a special water-resistant membrane, permeable Belgard pavers on the driveway and walkway, French drains under the crawl space, a metal roof to curtail storm damage and an elevated deck for the air conditioning system. “The first two or three feet in the garage is concrete wall so if there is a flood in the garage — which is a bit lower — the homeowners don’t have to worry about remediation,” says Benjamin. “You’re not ripping out sheetrock.” Natural light plays a large part in the design and style of the home, creating

The dining room features nine-foot picture windows and a stained x-beam on its ceiling. 60 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

spaces for family members to spend time together or to curl up alone with a good book. So when Southern Living named the property its Showcase Home last year, with three weekends of tours, serendipity was in play. Held in conjunction with National Literacy Awareness Month, and with admission proceeds benefiting the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation, visitors discovered a home that embraced a love of reading rather than an affinity for electronics, although the home has been completely wired. There’s a first floor library with picture windows, a window seat, built-in bookshelves and a rolling library ladder, as well as intimate reading nooks tucked here and there. In front of the home, under the shade of a mature tree that has been preserved, is a small lending library. “It’s really taken root in the neighborhood,” says Sarah. And, while out of season until now, by springtime a row of back-ordered Barbara Bush roses will line the driveway fence line. Sarah and Benjamin selected all of the hard finishes, and there’s nothing builder basic to be found anywhere. The kitchen features a stunning Moroccan tile backsplash, made to order in San Miguel de Allende by Daltile, that pulls together the various shades of green and blue in the home. A downstairs powder room incorporates a stunning black, white and brass tile in a chevron-style pattern. “I saw that sample,” says Sarah. “We work with Daltile and it’s fun for us to do a tile that our clients haven’t necessarily chosen.” Light fixtures are unusual and inspired, and Sarah says they were sourced from Lighting Inc. “I ordered so many light fixtures; there are just so many cool lights I wanted to use,” says Black and brass lighting fixtures illuminate the built-in bookshelves in this modern space. 62 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

“We like a house that has traditional appeal but is still modern and fresh.”

The 6,076-square foot home is built for resilience, including an elevated base and permeable Belgard pavers on the driveway and walkway.

— Sarah Lavine-Kass

Sarah. “We like a house that has traditional appeal but is still modern and fresh. It doesn’t feel heavy or stuffy and I think there’s an interplay between the fixtures and trim work.” In the dining room a black and brass mid-century modern inspired chandelier suspends ethereally from the center of a stained xbeam. Texture is evident throughout: The family room features shiplap and wainscot walls and a whitewashed brick fireplace with timber mantel (both salvaged); reclaimed brick is used as flooring in several rooms and as an accent wall in the kitchen. Barn doors, white oak flooring, French knotty alder wood doors and a farm house apron front sink all work together to give the home a fresh, comfortable feel. Lindsey Herod Interiors handled the entry way, library (SW 0064), downstairs powder room (SW 6685), family room, backyard porch and summer kitchen (SW 7551), laundry room (SW 9018), upstairs hallway and reading bench, and master bedroom and bath (SW 6224). Meg Lonergan Interiors worked on the dining room (SW 0003), kitchen and banquette (SW 6207), working pantry (SW 6205), butler pantry (SW 6208), game room, second floor common area and three bedrooms on the second floor. Braes Heights is one of the most coveted neighborhoods in Houston; Sarah says that their parents live there, Benjamin and

GARDENING

By Sam Byrd | PhotoS courteSy of the muSeum of fine artS, houSton

In 1925, Ima Hogg and her brothers, Will and Mike, selected 14 acres of natural woodlands and winding ravines for their home, now known as Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. Miss Hogg created formal gardens that reflect the Country Place era (1880–1920) in American landscape design. Photo by Rick Gardner

orget Punxsutawney Phil's whimsical weather forecast. Just pay attention to Mother Nature's abundant flora to figure out when spring has sprung. In this case, azaleas will colorfully proclaim the new season and there's no better time to witness their full glory than during the 84th Annual Azalea Trail, a long-standing Houston tradition. "[Houston's] Azalea Trail is the nation's oldest, longest running one. It's a cultural institution for Houston," says Bart Brechter, head of gardens and landscape for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. "It welcomes spring into Houston every year. It's as much a part of Houston as the rodeo. I can’t say enough important things about it." 72 house& home | February 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

The event kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the Lazy Lane entrance of Bayou Bend. This year's honoree is MFAH Director Gary Tinterow, who follows a long line of honorees including city dignitaries, senators and past presidents of River Oaks Garden Club. After all, this occasion's importance in our community calls for nothing less than top brass. The trail includes a tour of four private homes and gardens as well as Rienzi and Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens. Situated on 14 acres of organically maintained gardens in the River Oaks neighborhood, Bayou Bend is the former home of noted philanthropist Ima Hogg. It serves as the American decorative wing of MFAH and

Designed in the 1950s by landscape architect Ralph Ellis Gunn, Rienzi's gardens combine formal gardens with natural Texas woodlands. The gardens are maintained by the Garden Club of Houston with seasonal plants and flowers that bloom year round.

highlights Hogg's passion for travel and her love of East Texas. Rienzi operates as the museum’s European decorative art wing. As a bonus, a free shuttle will provide transportation between all locations. The trail ticket also includes a visit to the River Oaks Garden Club Forum of Civics to learn more information about Houston's horticultural settings from gardening experts. MFAH takes meticulous care of both Bayou Bend and Rienzi year-round, with a total of six gardeners to maintain the properties, along with the support of other groups dedicated to the conservation and upkeep of these southern beauties. River Oaks Garden Club and the Garden Club of Houston both help with the maintenance and stewardship of these gardens and are essential partners in making the azalea trail such a success. For azalea lovers looking to create a personal house of blooms, Brechter offers his advice. "I would plant them in a partial shade location, possibly getting sun in the morning. I would plant the root ball at least one inch out of the soil and mulch heavily around it so the plant can root heavily in the mulch," he says. "I’d fertilize them in late March, the first part of May, and again in August or September."

PET OF THE MONTH

MY NAME IS ALISTAIR!

A

listair is only a year and a half old, and he’s been in and out of the Houston SPCA’s care a few times already. He was originally transferred in last August from another animal organization in College Station, and soon found a wonderful home. Unfortunately his owner had to get a service dog for a family member and they couldn’t keep both dogs so he found his way back to the SPCA after a few months. He’s an energetic dog who loves to run and play in the dog yards. When he’s ready to cuddle, he’s very affectionate and loving. Won’t you let him climb his way into your heart? Bring him home and you’ll have an ally for life. MALE ID# 371092 1.5 years old The Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to make choosing the adoption option as easy as possible.
