in this issue: Spring is a time for renewal,
and with the Great Snowstorm of 2010 behind us, it’s time to look forward to the arrival of the season’s festivals and events taking place around the Metroplex. Mark your calendars for March 5th when the 31st Annual Dallas Home & Garden Market at Dallas Market Hall begins. Highlights of the show include the Vacation, Leisure and Outdoor show, the National Association of the Remodeling Industry's New Product Pavilion, the Dallas County Master Gardener experts and lectures, and much more. Two weeks later, on March 19th, the 11th Annual Fort Worth Home Show takes place at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. This show features home décor and outdoor living ideas and furnishings, how-to workshops, kitchen and bath remodeling, green building products, and dozens of other home improvement inspirations. You’ll find the Dallas and Fort Worth home show guides as pull-outs in the center of this issue. March is when we begin to enjoy the outdoor spaces that only North Texas can offer and plan our spring and summer projects. If you’re thinking of building a deck or remodeling an existing one, check out our Outdoor Floors story on page 26. The latest innovations in materials and construction mean more choices than ever before–including ecosmart synthetics. But you don't have to wait for warm weather to plant your garden. In our Top 10 Cool Season Plants article, on page 31, we list the Dallas Arboretum’s favorite varieties of the most commonly used cool season annuals. We hope you enjoy this issue while anticipating the warm weather to come.

ANN MCCORMICK – The Herb N’ Cowgirl – Her first hint of greatness came when she won a speech contest in 4-H. But this talent lay well-hidden through the teen years as Ann focused on her career choice in aerospace. She attended Biola College and UCLA, completing a BA in Mathematics in 1976. Following graduation she worked for Hughes Aircraft programming computers that controlled test equipment. In 1998 Ann left her career in aerospace to pursue a life-long interest in herbs. This was part of her well-planned mid-life crisis. The McCormicks moved to Texas where the family expects to remain for some time. A committed Christian, Ann lives in south Fort Worth with her husband, mother, and three dogs. She works from home writing blogs, articles, newsletters, and books. It’s all about herbs on stage with Ann. Check out the Herb N’ Cowgirl all weekend at the Home & Garden Theater.

STEVE HUDDLESTON – Raised around a great-grandfather that was born with a hoe in his hand, a grandmother that let him plant anything in her yard, and parents that loved to work in the yard, Steve has had his hands in the dirt since the age of three. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture from Oklahoma State University and a Master of Arts degree in another field from the University of Arizona. In Texas, he has worked at the Dallas Arboretum and as a horticulturist for the cities of Grand Prairie and Grapevine. Since 1994, he has been the senior horticulturist at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. He produces a monthly cable TV show entitled Your Garden and broadcasts weekly on Neil Sperry s lawn and garden show on radio station KRLD. He writes for Neil Sperry s GARDENS magazine, Dallas/Fort Worth House & Home, and Mansfield Magazine. In addition, he is the president of Blooming Concepts, Inc., a landscape consultation, design, and installation company.

GREAT DECKING SURFACES FOR FRONT OR BACKYARD SPACES
ABOVE: A new deck doesn’t have to use only wood. Southwest Fence & Deck added wrought iron railings to this spacious, multiple level cedar deck. Patios and decks are among the most popular places to relax at home in our year-round climate. If you’re thinking of building a deck or remodeling an existing one, you have more choices in materials than ever before.
Natural wood decks are still the standard. Most people choose pine treated with chemicals that make it stand up to weather and damp soil. However, other woods, synthetic woods, natural stone and concrete are all coming into increasing use and each has its strengths. Largely, it’s a matter of taste.
Natural woods other than pine also can be used. Redwood and cedar, for example, have resins that naturally protect them from weathering and rotting. They are, however, more expensive than treated pine. Choose materials for your deck that will complement the total look of your house, garden and any accessory structures in your landscape. Make sure the design of your deck is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional. If the deck is not comfortable, you won’t want to spend time there. ECO - SMART SYNTHETICS
One synthetic that is attracting a lot of attention is Trex, a composite that’s half recycled plastic and half wood and guaranteed not to split, rot or crack for 10 years. Most of the plastic comes from plastic supermarket bags returned to the stores for recycling — plastics that otherwise would go to landfills. The wood used in Trex is also a waste product, coming from furniture manufacturers and used wood pallets. Trex doesn’t need to be painted, and company officials recommend that it not be. Other popular synthetic decking materials include Choicedek, also made with recycled materials; and CorrectDeck, a polypropylene composite guaranteed not to rot, splinter or crack. LIKE A ROCK
Another choice in decks is concrete, which lately has gotten enormous attention for its flexibility in building and design applications. Concrete deck floors can be made to look like natural stone. The concrete is stamped or imprinted so it looks like tiles or flagstone pieces, and the color of the concrete can be custom mixed before it is poured. Accent colors can be added after the concrete sets, and then it is sealed. The planks for this expansive deck are Choicedek, composite decking made with recycled materials.

Concrete deck pavers by Belgard designate an attractive area for entertaining or relaxing.
DESIGN DETAILS
As each builder and designer emphasizes, the material used should be chosen to complement the total setting, as well as to provide the function you want. When considering the design for your deck, strive for an intimate setting that invites people to enter, sit down and relax. Don’t try to cover your whole back yard with a deck. Instead, go for a smaller, cozier design that creates a vignette within the total yard setting. Make use of the natural qualities of wood or synthetic wood products to create herringbone designs in the deck flooring for added visual interest. Bay-like structures and angled shapes, rather than a plain rectangular deck, can add interest. Multiple levels can add still more interest. Any deck in Dallas should be sheltered by some overhead structure, whether solid roof, vine-covered trellis or something else. Here, it’s all about shade. That shading shelter can mean the patio will remain inviting, rather than sitting unused all summer long.

4. Snapdragons (Antirrhinum majus) For the best performance Snapdragons should be planted in fall, they will have five times the number of flowers as those planted in spring and bloom much longer. When it comes to picking varieties your first thought should be how tall would you like them to be, Snaps can range in size from 6” tall little balls to 5 ft. tall plants. My favorite dwarf variety is currently the ‘Chimes’ series which tops out at 10" tall. It has the classic upright spike flower we most relate with snapdragons. If you want something a little taller go for the ‘La Bella’ series which will reach 18 to 20”. This series also has open type flowers that don’t “snap”. For the taller types that make great cut flowers look for the ‘Liberty’ & ‘Sonnet’ series. Both of these get 2 to 2-1/2 feet tall with large spikes of flowers.

Cool Season Plants from the Dallas Arboretum Trial Gardens One of the great advantages of gardening in Texas is our long cool falls and usually mild winters allow us to garden year round.
This is the reason that Texas is the leading market for pansy and other cool season crops such as dianthus and snapdragons. As a home gardener though, which varieties of the 100’s of pansies, violas, snapdragons and dianthus should you choose from? Well we’ve done the work for you! Every winter the Dallas Arboretum’s Trial Garden is filled to overflowing with 1,000’s of plant entries in our constant search for the best varieties to use in our area, and I’ve list my favorite varieties of our Top 10 most used cool season annuals to help you out. 1. Pansies (Viola X wittrockiana) are the most common cool season bedding plant in Texas for good reason. They consistently perform and they come in every color. But something most Texans don’t know and refuse to believe when it comes to pansies is that bigger flowers do not mean better plants. We've found that the mid-sized varieties flower more, return faster after hard freezes, and last longer in the heat. The best performers historically in our trials are the ‘Nature’ and ‘Panola’ series of pansies. They have compact plants with 2-1/2 inch flowers in many colors that are held just above the foliage. The flowers may not be as big as your hand, but they produce hundreds more of them. 2. Violas (Viola cornuta)– If you really want a lot of color for your money, then choose the smaller flowered violas. Believe it or not, plant for plant vs. pansies they deliver more flower power! They show wonderfully from a distance because there are so many blooms and the plants are tough. The best scoring varieties for us have been the ‘Sorbet’ series, ‘Penny’ series and the ‘Skippy XL’ series. Truthfully there isn't a bad viola out there! 3. Dianthus (Dianthus x hybridus) Who doesn’t love sweet scented dianthus flowers? These carnation relatives are one of our favorite fall and winter planted annuals because they love alkaline soil. Though they may not flower heavily through the winter months, if planted now they will explode in to huge flower displays in early spring. There are numerous choices in this group, but the varieties that have performed best for us are the ‘Elation’, ‘Telstar’ and ‘Floral Lace’ series. All form compact plants with large flower heads lasting late into the spring. If you want something a little taller try the 2 ? tall ‘Amazon’ series dianthus, which produces softball sized flower heads on glossy foliage.
5. Iceland Poppies (Papaver nudicaule) Everyone knows what poppies are but few gardeners realize that this particular group does exceptionally well as a cool season annual in Texas. If fall planted Iceland poppies with grow into 10” mounds of light green foliage all winter rewarding you in mid-spring with hundreds of 5” across flowers in shades of apricot-bronze, orange, pink, scarlet, yellow, and creamy white. The variety that has performed the best for us is ‘Champagne Bubbles’ 6. Linaria hybrida 'Enchantment' A beautiful plant with a terrible common name “Toadflax” This winter flowering annual has very fragrant blooms of intense magenta with a gold center which are produced continuously. Wonderful addition to winter containers, or try under-planting it with spring flowering bulbs. 7. Erysimum species ‘Citrona’ Series This exceptionally floriferous annual has performed well and delighted us the last few years in our trial garden. Bright orange or yellow sweetly scented flowers last from fall until spring. Wonderful mixed with pansies or violas in containers. 8. Digitalis purpurea ‘Camelot’ Everyone knows what foxglove is, but did you know it makes a great spring flowering annual for us? That is if you remembered to plant them in the garden before January. Fill the gaps in your perennial border with this winter hardy plant and you’ll garden will be filled with 4 ft. tall spikes of the classic flower. We like the ‘Camelot’ series because it forms multiple flower spikes and doesn’t need staking. Just remember in Texas this plant is a winter annual only. 9. Ornamental Kale (Brassica oleracea)- The garden isn’t always about flowers, but sometimes ornamental foliage. Ornamental Kale is indispensable to the winter landscape. There are just not many choices for tall plants to use in the back of the bed or in containers. For that reason three of my favorite kale varieties are BIG! ‘Red Bor’ is my absolute favorite with deep burgundy red foliage from early fall until April. This plant will easily reach 3 ft. tall and look perfect all winter long. ‘Feather’ and ‘Peacock’ kale both form large rosettes of deep red or white colored leaves that can reach 3 ft. across. All kale are heavy feeders so fertilize them a couple of times over the season. 10. Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) This relative of the edible globe artichoke guaranteed to get your neighbors talking. The silvery arching foliage will form a 3 ft. across clump during the winter and in spring large bright blue thistle like flowers appear. I use these in mass plantings and as container accent plants. Not only is it beautiful the young tender stems taste like artichokes.

FROM BLAND TO BOLD A DATED KITCHEN GOES MODERN THE PROBLEM These local homeowners wanted a sophisticated, modern looking kitchen to complement their lifestyle. The old kitchen was very cold and bland, but the new kitchen is vibrant and awe inspiring. THE SOLUTION To transform their boring kitchen into a modern showpiece, the homeowners called on Graf Developments to create a new, vibrant kitchen. Dazzling elements can be found throughout the new space. Anchoring the kitchen is a custom-made exhaust 32
vent of solid copper. Surrounding the vent are hundreds of glass tiles with real gold leaf flowing through each piece. At the other end of the kitchen is an egg shaped peninsula that houses the microwave oven. Three original windows and the French door unit were removed and replaced with four new thermal windows and doors to bring in more light. The inspiration for the kitchen’s new look came from Jenn-Air’s new line of Oiled Bronze appliances used throughout the space. The adjoining butler’s pantry went through the same overhaul. All new lighting was used throughout the kitchen and butler’s pantry including under-cabinet and inner-cabinet fixtures.
