Their historic, 1930s traditional home has been respectfully renovated over the past 12 years in collaboration with Natalie Appel & Associates to retain the gentle charm of its original era. Meanwhile, the family and their dynamic contemporary art collection has grown and evolved in direct response to the vibrant and accessible contemporary art community the Nyquists discovered after moving to Houston. The return of springtime also means Round Top antiques season is here. To help Houston-area shoppers navigate the ever-expanding antiques extravaganza, we are proud to present the debut issue of our Round Top Collectors Guide. Master Suite Makeover Bright solutions turn on the charm in a once-drab and dated space BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN
Sheryl Horton, a kitchen designer, called me because a company she used to work for advertised in Houston House & Home. “I needed an extra set of experienced eyes when we were readying our former house to sell,” Sheryl explained. “You helped keep me on track and spend money on projects that would enhance the sale and not get hung up on projects that would not matter to buyers. Since the previous house sold quickly and I had worked with you before, I really trusted your recommendations.” The couple’s plan was to buy a much smaller foreclosure—a fixer upper—to live in and remodel while they searched for a retirement home in Hilton Head, SC. “You came out the day our slab was being jack hammered and didn’t miss a beat!” Sheryl recalled.
ed by building legs onto new frameless custom cabinets. To further increase space, the couple mirrored the fronts of two closet doors on each side of the built-in linen cabinet and trimmed the wall around the doors to resemble a built-in armoire (opposite the sinks). The mirrored doors bounced a lot of light around the once-dark room and made the room feel wider. Two opaque, glass pocket doors (special ordered from Home Depot) eliminate awkward, space-gobbling door swings into the bathroom and shower area and further flood the room with light.
TIP: If you are handy, do as much physical work as you can to save thousands and not “overbuild the neighborhood.”
Because she did not want the maintenance of stone, Sheryl chose neutral Dal-Tile 20-inch porcelain tile in Capriccio Aria Crema for the floors to coordinate with the granite and paint colors. The same tile was used in several sizes in the shower for interest and continuity. Sheryl likes the fact the tile flows underneath the raised vanities and is not dark in color, so it expands the space. Sheryl's husband Charlie installed electrical GFCI outlets inside the
They refer to their former master bath as the “worst room in the house.” It had nasty carpet that had been used as a doggy bed, and the room was small, dark and dingy. I immediately suggested elevating the cabinets to increase the feeling of more space, which her husband Charlie creat18
TIP: Use mirrors and translucent glass to bounce light around, reflect garden views and visually increase space.

BEFORE creativeblinds.com BEFORE (above): A huge window made placing a king-sized bed and two bed side tables rather difficult.
BEFORE (above right): Sheryl wanted a place to sit with a large mirror and drawers, and the storage wall did not allow that.
AFTER (left): Closing in the large window provided a place for furniture. Adding three new energy efficient windows added light and created a view of the lovely back yard.
AFTER (top of this page): The solution involved removing the storage wall and selecting frameless cabinet construction to place on each side of the new energy efficient window all the way to the ceiling. Sheryl got the mirror and soft-close drawers she wanted and added 10- to 15-percent more storage than with typical face-frame cabinets.

new 9-inch deep cabinets on each side of the new sit-down vanity. “Now my curling iron and hair dryer are and plugged in, within easy reach and ready to use in metal-lined cups, so there is no tangle of cords on the counter while the appliances are cooling,” Sheryl said. Nine new soft-close drawers provide ample storage for toiletries and are also up off the ground on matching legs. TIP: When remodeling your bath, take the opportunity to make the space function the way you want it. Choose surfaces that are neutral and will appeal to buyers.
BEFORE
TRADE SECRETS • Get creative — repurposing old dresser mirrors over the bathroom vanity saves money, too. • When the builder gave you lemons, use a professional to help you turn them into lemonade -on your budget. • Remove dated sheet mirrors and update lighting to totally change your bathroom. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is to first rethink the pieces that are already paid for.
BEFORE (below): The old bath was dated with awful carpeted floor, 12-inchsquare tile countertops, built-in medicine cabinet, and a brass shower surround and brass-trimmed sheet mirror. AFTER (left): New white under-mount sinks, 20-inch Dal-Tile porcelain tile flooring, brushed nickel hardware, new sconce lights and faucets add practical good looks to the room. The old medicine cabinet was removed and sheetrocked over. Above the vanity hangs a pair of mirrors repurposed from a 40-year old, early-marriage, triple dresser.
Matching brushed nickel cabinet hardware from www.myknobs.com, Danze Fairmont Collection faucets from www.faucetsdirect.com and a combination of new recessed and sconce lights from Carol’s Lighting unify the space. A new special order Sterling glass shower door from Home Depot and the splurge of a second showerhead mounted on an adjustable bracket makes cleaning much easier. A brushed nickel grab bar was added for safety. Even though there is a window in the shower/WC room, the couple added a new quiet ventilator with a timer so that they can walk away and know that the moisture will be removed without wasting a lot of energy. Benjamin Moore “Sandy White” matte wall paint on the walls and ceilings in the master bathroom and bedroom expands the space and allows the crown molding to pop. The molding and trim throughout came from BMC West and were painted with Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo Acrylic Latex Enamel in #314-01 “White.” John DeGrouchy at Quality Granite and Marble installed the Giallo Ornamental granite. In the bedroom, the couple chose an Audrey king-size duvet cover and three Euro shams, two king-size Porcelain Blue Pick Stitch shams and a monogrammed Morgan sham, all from Pottery Barn. The tailored Martha Stewart bed skirt came from Macy’s. All coordinate with Sheryl’s blue and white porcelain collection. TIP: Extending the wall paint onto the ceiling makes the ceilings appear taller because your eyes go up and over the room without the line of demarcation that white ceilings can create.
If they had to do this over again, Sheryl and Charlie would have made this project a higher priority instead of ripping out the bathroom carpet and walking around on rubber mats for three years. “The finished bathroom is my favorite room in the house now. It is light, airy and has so much storage that I have room to spare,” Sheryl explained.

The Nyquists 1937 redbrick Georgian-inspired home is a wonderfully demure example of River Oaks’ early days. Sublime and stately, the two-story residences is well-proportioned with windows distributed symmetrically, and one Oculus window above front door, lending a third eye of sorts to the face of the home.
By SANDRA COOK | Photos by PAUL HESTER When Judy and Scott Nyquist relocated to Houston from London 14 years ago, they landed in a River Oaks relic, a 1937 Georgian-inspired two-story on the superbly scenic stretch of Kirby Drive. The home is quite handsome and notably understated amidst its neighbors on this oftogled, oak-lined boulevard. But the quiet, respectful exterior serves as something of a chocolate coating encasing the Nyquist’s delicious mélange—complex and curious artworks amidst colorful, contemporary and comfortable furnishings. Judy Nyquist, who studied art history at University of Michigan and Northwestern, takes pride in the livable art experience that has evolved at their home. Each room resembles an art gallery, yet no room is untouchable or forbidden. Family and guests may lounge and linger (and do so often). The idea of preserving a 1930s home only to fill it with a young family and a dynamic array of art may be unfamiliar to some, but not
London transplants inspired by Houston’s vibrant local art community dare to transform a historical home in River Oaks with equal parts dignity and delight LEFT: In Judy and Scott Nyquist’s casual living area, art, color and family life find harmony. to Judy Nyquist. “The concept of a contemporary insertion into old building as a sensibility is common in the UK and all over Europe,” says Judy. “It happens a lot in central London, so that was a very familiar aesthetic to me.” SOLD ON ART “I’ve really always had a desire to collect,” says Judy. “My studies were specialized in works on paper.” Judy moved to London when she was engaged to Scott, who was working there, and the pair began collecting 16th-and 17th-century drawings and prints because they were small and portable, easy to move from flat to flat. They also perused London’s local galleries, but bought the majority of their collection at auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonhams. After moving to Houston, the Nyquist’s collection of contemporary pieces expanded dramatically in response to the vibrant contemporary art community in Houston. Today, their collection is largely made up of contemporary art. “It’s actually an easy move from old master drawings to contemporary art,” says Judy. TEARDOWN? NONSENSE. “I loved the bones of the house when I walked in,” says Judy. “I was told it was a ‘teardown’ by the real estate agent—I didn’t even know the term, because it doesn’t even exist anywhere that I had ever lived. I had also been told that Kirby Drive wasn’t an ideal place to raise young children. I had just about 24 hours to look at houses and make a decision. I told the agent, ‘I’ll take it.’” The Nyquists employed Natayle Appel & Associates to renovate and update their 1937 River Oaks home, originally designed by William G. Farrington Company (who designed a portion of the River Oaks Shopping Center and the Lamar-River Oaks center, opposite Lamar High School). Natalye Appel, FAIA, and her then-associate Lonnie Hoogeboom, AIA, immediately were inspired by the history and significance of the Nyquist’s collection of works on paper. “It was the beginning of that mix of the older works and the contemporary art that was so fun and inspirational about our design process,” Appel. “We had a supRIGHT: The kitchen in the 1930s home received a major upgrade in 2000. porting role to the art— that was the nice thing about being involved in this project.” “The final look of the architecture and millwork was an attempt to let the building fade into the background,” says Hoogeboom. “We introduced a lot of natural light and art-specific lighting to let the space be fairly neutral so the art could take the foreground.” “We really went for simplicity when we renovated the house, says Judy. “The house was handsome to begin with, but we didn’t want to introduce any additional detailing,” says Judy. “I told Lonnie, ‘I want lots of natural light, but I need walls’,” laughs Judy. Architect Lonnie Hoogeboom designed an asymmetrical set of display cases to flank the doorways between the comfortable den and the more gallery-like front living room. The cases were created for a collection of purses made to look like Hermès Kelly Bags by cardboard artist Matthew Sporzynski (whose work appears frequently in Real Simple ). “I see the collaboration between the art and the LEFT: In the Nyquist’s gallery like front living room, Todd Brandt’s meticulous assemblage of 35mm film canisters filled with latex paint hangs above a ceramic representation of a dog bed. architecture—with the art collection going from mostly older works to more contemporary pieces—as similar to the house itself,” says Hoogeboom. “The house started as very traditional older home that evolved into a space for modern living, inhabited by a vibrant family and housing a dynamic variety of contemporary art.” HISTORIC PROPORTIONS From the beginning Judy and Scott did not want to change the footprint of the house. “We wanted to keep the human scale,” says Judy. They didn’t want to create a residence that looked like palace for royalty, so no vast, vaulted interiors, nor ballrooms were considered. “It has such a lovely scale from the street,” says Appel. “As architects, we are often tasked to solve problems. The front of the house had a charming, classic look, while the back was a mish-mash of later additions. We tried to respect the original footprint and work toward bringing the back view inline with the look of the front.” The respectful renovation efforts resulted in RIGHT Much of the art collection is family appropriate. the home receiving a historical designation from the City of Houston. Initially, the Nyquists hired Natalye Appel & Associates to make a few improvements to their guest house in 1998. Soon after, Judy and Scott worked with the firm to carefully plan and execute the major renovations on the main house that were completed in 2000. As the children grew up, and the art collection expanded, Appel & Associates were called upon once again to rework the kids’ rooms, create an office for Judy and finish out the attic as a media room. With the attic work planned, Scott insisted on addressing the 1930s home’s energy efficiency by upgrading HVAC systems, insulation and more. He reports the efforts have yielded 25 to 30 percent savings on utilities. “Visually the effects are invisible, but still important,” says Judy. CURRATOR’S VISION Hoogeboom recalls the unique collaboration between the design team and the homeowners, noting that the Nyquists approached the renovations as an art project, daring to take risks in subtle ways to produce extraordinary environments for living with their art collection. An example is the Nyquists dining room. This former dark, cave-like gentleman’s study is now a RIGHT The sparsely furnished living room/galley is the first main room off the entry. delightful setting for dinners thanks to widened doorways, walls painted a cheerful pink, and the stainless steel fireplace surround envisioned by Judy and crafted by Spirit Ridge Studios. Here, dining guests enjoy the company of a Warhol silkscreen of Marilyn Monroe and a Picasso etching depicting a woman with two children. The front living room is also a mix of ponderous artwork and homey comforts. The room is anchored by the tiled fireplace, two Kelly green chairs alongside an antique chest and Scott’s grandfather’s wooden desk with typewriter shelf. The solid wood heirloom desk functions as a foundation for display, with various work of art perched upon and suspended above it. An old typewriter found at a junk store is a curiosity to the Nyquests teenagers and other young observers. Ample open space throughout the room allows the viewer to breathe in the art array, thus preparing guests for art experience the entire home holds in store. It’s easy to see the playful, whimsical nature of many of the Nyquist’s pieces, but with further observation, the more intriguing intellectual elements capture the eye. Judy and Scott still admire the remarkable works on paper acquired in London, but are truly passionate about the world of contemporary art they’ve encountered in Houston.
RIGHT Landscaper Cedar Baldridge reworked the landscaping and included many artful touches into the architecture. She worked the word “shade” in the poolside pergola, in response to Judy’s affinity for the artistic nature of text. “When I moved to Houston, I discovered an amazing, burgeoning, incredible contemporary arts scene—and it was seductive,” says Judy. “So I became very involved in not only purchasing and looking at contemporary art, but also getting involved in all the institutions. I am dedicated to working with local museums, galleries and art publications, in addition to Houston causes like the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, Houston Arts Alliance and Hermann Park Conservancy. It’s funny, I’m a non-native, but I have huge pride for Houston and the many aspects it has to offer, because it was a surprise to me. It’s really delightful. We’re incredibly lucky to be here among all this with everything so accessible.” ABOVE: British artist Lisa Milroy’s large-scale painting of spectacles greets guests just inside the front door. REINVENTING AN EXISTING POOL REQUIRES PROPER PLANNING AND A CAPABLE CONTRACTOR Age, wear and tear, weather extremes and other factors can take their toll on a backyard pool. How has your pool endured? From a minor touch up to an extreme makeover, the possibilities for fixing up an existing pool are almost endless, but seeing those possibilities become a happy realities requires experienced professionals who will get it done right.
We asked several local pool construction and renovation experts for their advice on making over a lackluster pool. Here’s what those experienced pros had to say. OPTIONS FOR UPGRADES

An existing pool can benefit from sprucing up the surfaces, as well as many functional and visual upgrades. “The improvements can be as simple as resurfacing the pool interior and/or changing the tile and coping,” says Jo Anne Cronin, owner of Creative Pool Designs. She suggests owners may also consider adding decking or changing the material, from, say basic concrete to flagstone. Note that flagstone coping is not recommended with saltwater pool systems, because of the porous nature of flagstone. While most existing pool interior surfaces are plaster—the industry standard for years—pebble-based surfacing, such as Pebble-Tec is gaining

ground. “Pebble-Tec is more durable because of its rock content,” says Jeremy Jackson of Adams Tile & Plaster. “The finish is about 85-90 percent pebble, so it’s harder and more resilient than plaster and has a higher PSI rating than plaster.” Jackson reports that plaster surfaces usually last about 8 years, while a pebble surface can last up 25 years. His company has been using Pebble-Tec in the Houston area for more than 10 years. Beyond the basics, the options are only limited by your imagination and budget. “More dramatic and extensive changes can include water features, raised elements, replacing old lights with eco-friendly, cost effective color-changing lights, eco-friendly, more cost-effective pool equipment, mood-lighting in the yard, fog and/or fire features,” says Cronin. In addition to those extras, Don Peak of Reflection Pools & Spas adds even more possibilities to the list, such as underwater speakers, entry lifts for the handicapped, and even new slides (where allowed). “Pool automation is now more affordable with wireless remote controls for lights, heater, blower, lighting, etc.,” says Peak.

if they change or add an item and that goes for all ages. From children who may want to dive in the wrong depths or the older generation who may need safety rails to get into the pool or spa or have continuous railings along each side of the pool.”
DECISIONS , DECISIONS
Cronin recommends homeowners think about the larger picture carefully and not rush into such a large project. “The timing of the homeowner’s research should be done so that the actual work can be done in the Fall or Winter months, when new construction is down,” says Cronin. This way, the pool company can spend quality time planning and designing your pool project. Cronin encourages homeowners to “think about how are they going to use the pool. “Pool owners need to think about what they really like about having a pool,” says Peak. “Do they enjoy swimming laps or do they prefer sitting on benches or reclining on tan benches? The most important item is pool safety 42
THAT DARN DROUGHT
Many pool owners witnessed the drought’s effects on the decking around the pool, but not the physical structure of the pool. “Last summer's drought was a 100-year record and created a lot of problems for existing decks and home foundations,” says Peak. “Despite all that, well-built gunite pools were not affected in most cases. Decks can be raised and re-worked with solid decks that have rebar for underlayment of travertine, flagstone or just built for toppings like Spray Deck or similar products. Drainage meeting code requirements can also help in most yards and should be installed by a company that uses code-certified PVC pipe.”

According to Cronin, the price tag for a standard retile, recope and replaster is usually less than $10,000. “Obviously adding any of the features listed above would increase the cost of the remodel. If contemplating the more aggressive changes, the homeowner should request a pricing breakdown so that serious thought can be given to each item and the benefit the homeowner will gain from it—whether the gain is the enjoyment they will derive or monetary gain upon resale.” “Depending on the scope of the work from minor to major, the range would be $8,000 to $80,000-plus,” says Peak. Remodeling a pool can take about one week to six weeks, depending on the project. “The average project will take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks, weather permitting,” says Cronin. “The larger projects can take longer. Projects do move faster in the fall and winter.” With years of experience, Peak is proud of the standards of the local pool industry. Houston has some of the best pool builders and sub contractors in the U.S. We cannot build pools here with the minimum thickness of the walls and minimal amount of steel that is allowed in other areas of the U.S.,” says Peak.

DO YOUR OWN QUALI TY ASSURANCE
“Make sure the company is qualified to do the work and obtains the proper permits for plumbing and electrical work,” says Peak. “Each city in our area has its own codes. Ask for work references and check with the BBB.” “Look for a company that gives free estimates and doesn’t require payment upfront,” says Jackson. “At Adams, we ask for payment upon completion, not in advance.” Ask for proof of insurance. “Many companies say they have insurance,” says Jackson. “Ask to see their certificate. Otherwise, if there’s an accident on the job site and the company is not really insured, an injured worker can hold the homeowner responsible. Countertops are the center stage of every kitchen. We naturally tend to focus on that surface area, be it a tiny galley kitchen or a grand gourmet kitchen. But counter surfaces don’t just get to sit there and look pretty, they have to put up with food prep messes, hot pans, frozen foodstuffs, a parade of small appliances, and all the non-cooking items that always seem to linger on kitchen counters. The spectrum of material choices ranges from Formica to granite to quartz to concrete. With countertops being such well-used surfaces, what is the strongest, most durable countertop surface material? “Quartz-based countertops are the most durable with granite not far behind,” says David Leva of Dream Maker Kitchen & Bath. “Concrete is strong but requires regular maintenance due to its porosity.”

“It was a pleasure building our home with Matt Powers Custom Homes & Renovations; we worked closely with the whole team on every decision. I really trust their integrity and honesty. I appreciate the access and help they offered in all phases of our decision making. They accompanied me to the granite yards, brick yards, plumbing fixtures, etc. to answer questions I may have had as I made our selections. That was invaluable. We felt confident in our decision-making, knowing that their expertise would guide us in the right direction. Their standard of excellence has helped us create a beautiful home.” Kayle & Danny Miller
