EDITOR’S NOTE

S

pring is finally here and the season brings fields of bluebonnets, the itch to get our hands dirty in the garden, and the wanderlust for road-tripping through antique country. Antique Weeks are a pretty big deal around here, so big in fact that many of the vendors stagger their start dates, which helps spread out the crowds. Check out our special section for all the details on the who and where, then chart your course for a treasure-hunting adventure. But before you go, don’t overlook our Project section where expert Joyce Horn shows us how to tell the old from the new, whether a piece is made by hand or machine, and why pieces that seem similar have different values. Have you ever wondered how Round Top and the Texas antique corridor all began? Our origins story about Curtis Ann Davis and The Arbors will get you started. And whether you plan on packing a picnic or stopping for a meal while antiquing in central Texas, our Recipe section has you covered. You won’t want to miss this month’s features. Marke Bowe from DIY Network’s Barnwood Builders used reclaimed logs to build an amazing cabin in New Braunfels, with a massive 3,000square-foot party barn to go along with it. Up towards Conroe, Monte

Smith Designs and Mastercraft Homes just finished a lakefront mansion that was inspired by the homeowner’s travels to Greece, Italy and throughout Europe. We’re jealous of designer Anne Breux’s recent trip through Europe, but she did report back on what she found at IMM Cologne, Paris Déco Off and Maison&Object Paris; read more in Product. In Gardening, Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques, Inc. shows us how to attract and keep butterflies in the garden. It sounds like a soothing and relaxing endeavor but, if more sleep is still what you crave, turn the page to Editor’s Picks where new technology awaits to help you catch those elusive Zs. No issue would be complete without the scoop on upcoming home tours and shows from Texas Home & Garden, Johnson Development and Houston Heights Association. Our calendar lists where to shop for vintage finds and antiques closer to home, plus gardening classes, festivals and art opportunities. And lastly, if you’re looking for a reason to smile, take a look at Sophie, our pet of the month. She’s got a megawatt smile, and it’s contagious. From our home to yours, Susie Tommaney

APPLES TO APPLES Understanding the Price Differences in Antiques By Joyce Horn, owner of Joyce Horn Antiques, LtD PHotos By JessicA D. terrigno

rom time to time, I will overhear visitors wonder why one antique in my shop is priced at $300 while something that seems similar is set at $3,000. There is some mystery implied, and I always embrace these opportunities to grab my teaching cap. After many years importing antiques, I can say that the final price is most often determined by what I have paid. Fortunately, and with experience, I try to buy well and pass those savings along to my customers. Here are a few trade secrets for use on your next shopping trip. Admitting that I am partial to French furniture, I’ll use

the ubiquitous French commode (low chest of drawers) in this comparison. The commode has long been a popular and useful piece of furniture, popularized by Louis XV in the 18th century, and is still being made to this day. A date of 1800 and prior is most often used to denote the period in which furniture was handmade, but variance does exist in that date. Furniture made before mass production is more rare and individualized and will fall into a higher price range. Here is a bit of history to aid in our lesson on how best to date the commode. Even though the Industrial Revolution began in the 18th century, France experienced a

hiccup in the progression of the machine age as a result of that little upheaval called the French Revolution. In the latter part of the 18th century, France was not only without bread and in complete turmoil, but the country had also lost many of its movers and shakers to the guillotine. Louis XVI lost his head, the important furniture guilds of Paris lost their mentor and clientele, and the guilds were no longer licensed to take commissions and build furniture. Pieces that did survive are mostly in the hands of museums or the very rich and will always be signed or stamped by the cabinetmaker. However, ordinary people had furniture before and after the terror. Provincial cabinetmakers and talented individuals 22 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

anonymously produced beautifully built pieces for family, friends and local clients, interpreting the period’s style with a regional bent. Many of these have found their way to market today. So how can we determine if a piece is handmade? An antique should speak of living: age cracks and wood shrinkage are normal. Wear marks should make sense – around a key plate, sharp edges, or where a drawer has been repeatedly opened. If there has been any restoration, the evidence of the refurbishment should be subtle and appropriate. There should be a beautiful, mellow patina on the surface of the wood; a true patina develops as the wood oxidizes and is repeatedly cleaned and polished over time. Painted finishes should be considered purely decorative and the piece should not have been refinished; the application of shiny varnish is a killer. A buyer may not know the dates associated with square and rectangular nails, but can easily recognize a modern round nail. Although there are many types of joints, machine-made drawer joints are perfect while handcut joints are irregular and imperfect, depending on the skill and inclination

The French commode is a low chest of drawers, often with elaborate decoration and with cabriole legs or short feet. When speaking of furniture, the word “commode” comes from the French word for convenient or suitable. RIGHT: This Louis XVI médaillon chair was finished with upholstery, following the taste of MarieAntoinette.

of the maker. Tool marks can be seen or felt on handmade pieces, and interiors of antique pieces that include old fabric or paper are a special treat. Expect to see wear on the feet of antique furniture from exposure to natural moisture and the countless passes of brooms and mops over time. Adding to this discussion about price is the intrinsic value of a piece of furniture. Personal taste is important and is often subjective. Is the piece of furniture in a style considered classic or has the style been repeated throughout history? Does the style have a name and is it easily recognized? Consider the classic style associated with the fluted leg of a Louis XVI chair. Images of Greek columns and Roman architecture come to mind. Follow the curve of a cabriole leg to the American colonies similarly seen in the Chippendale style. Think of the Neoclassic grace of Sheraton and Hepplewhite. Examine how Medieval and Renaissance designs are seen in revival styles of Italian and Spanish pieces. Avoid overly done style (most everything Victorian) and explore if later styles such as Art Nouveau, Deco, or the current midcentury furniture trend will mix easily with existing or future décor. Ultimately, will the style stand the test of time? When assessing prices, be sure the comparison is like to like. These same principles of evaluation can be applied to any piece of furniture, regardless of country of origin. Anyone can enjoy the process of confirming that a piece of furniture is new or old, made by hand or machine, and that the price conforms to that comparison. Understanding why there are disparities will allow you to be a more confident buyer and will increase your appreciation of the furniture and the cabinetmakers of the past.

nother trip overseas, another chance to share my discoveries with you.

IMM Cologne, Germany imm-cologne.com The international furniture fair was the right place to study the immense influence of the Bauhaus movement on today’s interiors and the world of design. In celebration of the school’s 100th anniversary, IMM welcomed us with an impressive mural of sketches by the school’s extraordinary teachers, including Walter Gropius (the school’s founder), Wassily Kandinsky (wall painting), Paul Klee (stained glass and painting), Josef Albers (arts and crafts), Marianne Brandt (metalwork), Marcel Breuer (interiors), and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (the school’s last director). From one hall to another, the most beautiful vignettes at IMM Cologne were those from manufacturers who edited masterpieces from the Bauhaus era: Knoll, Thonet, and Walter K.

26 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

THE BAUHAUS MOVEMENT My spotlight this month is on the Bauhaus school of design, architecture and applied arts that opened in Weimar, Germany in 1919. Its influence can be found everywhere, including our own city. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the last director of the Bauhaus school before it closed in 1933, was the architect who designed the modern, curved, glass-enclosed Cullinan Hall for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, giving the city a modern, international flair when the doors opened in 1958. To this day the space remains the central feature of the Caroline Wiess Law Building. The Bauhaus school moved from Weimar to Dessau to Berlin and eventually closed under pressure from the Nazi government in 1933. As a result, most of the teachers emigrated to the United States and formed new ateliers and firms, with their practices entirely based on the Bauhaus. Mies, who was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century and one of the founders of modernism, was the first dean of Bauhaus’s school of architecture. His minimalist style and trademark aphorism — “less is more” — remains important today. During my flight from Houston to Cologne I made a stopover in Washington, D.C.; it was the perfect place to understand the influence of Mies upon the work of architect Eero Saarinen, who infused his own innovative and organic sculptural forms in the TWA Terminal as well as in the Washington Dulles International Airport.

paris-deco-off.com After a bare 30 hours in Cologne, I found myself in Paris again. It was early morning and I was ready to walk from store to store in Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Rue du Mail. It was the tenth year of the Paris Déco Off and I was ready for another celebration. Textile manufacturers from around the globe were taking over showrooms, art galleries, boutique hotels and the streets, offering us a look at their latest creations. The variety of textures, the scale of patterns, threedimensional effects and vibrancy of colors have never been so grand. So much for Mies van der Rohe’s “less is more.”

Maison&Object Paris maison-objet.com/en Finally it was back to Villepinte for another take at Maison et Objet, the first edition for 2019. It was all about France, forcing me — somehow — to go back to my roots. Too late, if I recognize the excellence of the Bayou City’s trades, craftsmen and decorators. I feel more at home here in the Houston, in a vibrant city that follows the leadership of Mies.

RECIPE

Relish Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary classic American food in the River Oaks/Upper Kirby District. Stop by at 2810 Westheimer or try our recipe inspired by their amazing fried chicken. Photo by Julie Soefer

SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN

I

f you don’t want to wait for a table, pack a picnic. Here’s a recipe inspired by the country fried chicken at Relish Restaurant & Bar. They serve peppery rosemary biscuits that are amazing hot or cold (pick some up!). Visit relishhouston.com.

INGREDIENTS 6 large eggs kosher salt

3 cups all-purpose flour ½ cup cornstarch

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon crushed red pepper

1 teaspoon black pepper ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 3-1/2 pound chicken, cut into 8 pieces vegetable oil for frying

32 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

METHOD In a large bowl, beat the eggs with a pinch of salt. In another bowl, whisk the flour with the cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, crushed red pepper, 2 1/2 tablespoons of salt and 1 teaspoon of black pepper.

Pat the chicken pieces dry. Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Season the chicken with salt and pepper and dredge in the seasoned flour. Dip the coated chicken in the egg, then dredge again in the seasoned flour and transfer to the baking sheet.

In a large cast-iron skillet, heat 3/4 inch of oil to 360 degrees. Set a rack over another baking sheet. Fry half of the chicken over moderate heat, turning occasionally, until golden brown and an instant-read thermometer inserted nearest the bone registers 165 degrees, about 15 minutes. Transfer to the rack. Repeat with the remaining chicken. Serve immediately.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

Texas Treasure Hunting EVERYTHING’S COMING UP VINTAGE WITH SPRING ANTIQUE WEEKS By Susie Tommaney

Owner Sean McLaren, who has been in the trade for 40 years, hand-picks the treasures at McLaren’s Antiques & Interiors. Photo courtesy of McLaren’s

ife may be like a box of chocolates, but so is antiquing in Texas. Our all inclusive list includes brick-and-mortar (or shiplap and reclaimed wood) mainstays that remain open year round, run by folks who have pickin’ in their blood. We’re also highlighting barn-type venues, often air-conditioned, that pull out all the stops for the winter, spring and fall antique weeks, attracting hundreds of vendors from all across the country. The dates for antique weeks vary with each stop, some starting as early as March 9-10, others beginning March 21 and remaining up through April 8. Another important note is that maps mean (almost) nothing when it comes to antique alley. The lines get blurred along the four mile stretch between Round Top and Warrenton, so better check both towns on our resource list

L

for all the details on pop-ups, tents and favorite venues. Learn to steer clear of anything mass-produced and focus instead on those dealers who carry authentic antique, vintage or repurposed décor. And when you find that perfect one-of-a-kind piece for house or garden that you can’t live without, best to snap it up right then and there. Everybody knows that, if you really love it, that treasure won’t still be there when you circle back. Wear comfy shoes, dress for any kind of weather, stay hydrated and remember where the bathrooms are located. We’ve also cast our nets just a bit wider in case your

picking journey takes you past Burton, Carmine, La Grange, Fayetteville or one of the local shops right here in the Bayou City.

The Ingenuity of Curtis Ann Davis Founder of The Arbors Marks 25 Years in Round Top By Marsha Canright | Photos courtesy of The Arbors

t looks like a fairytale scene from the Arabian Nights. Dozens of elegant white tents rise from the 12-acre field next to the Round Top American Legion Hall and for 11 days in the spring and fall, each of those tents is a lair filled with treasures. This is The Arbors, the signature show for Curtis Ann Davis who has been a mainstay of Round Top’s antique weeks for the past 25 years. She is one of the few early vendors who continues to have a show at Round Top. “So much has changed over the years. Round Top weekend is no longer just about antiques, which breaks my heart a little, but times change,” Davis says. “Young people today like to mix things up; they mostly don’t want a houseful of antiques.” Among dealers, Davis is known as an entrepreneur who is willing to try new things: a rotating happy hour in different tents, a martini bar, live music, swag bags, even homemade banana pudding. Last year on a hot spring day she was passing out ice cream to her dealers from a golf cart. Her philosophy is simple: Change is inevitable. “You have

to be a willow. You have to be able to bend,” she says. Davis started as a dealer but went on to become the founder and manager of a venue that grew from 20 dealers to more than 90. She is responsible for the site, OSHA regulations, the infrastructure and clean-up crew, and for bringing customers to her show. “Last year we did a panel discussion on ‘Mastering the Mix,’ and that’s what I see emerging at Round Top,” she says. “My own daughters have a mix: midcentury, Oriental, industrial, some antiques, and it all works together and looks fabulous,” she says. In the past the fall and spring shows were devoted purely to antiques. “Now there are linens, handmade jewelry, antler art, pillows from Morocco, repurposed items, amazing rugs from many countries, framed fossils, botanical prints, and so much more. Of course, there are still many beautiful antiques from all over the world.” Before deciding to create her own Round Top venue, she and her husband, Dave, owned The Arbor House, a successful antiques cooperative in Alvin. The shop sat next to a

producing grape arbor and Davis enlisted a senior citizen group to turn those grapes into homemade jelly. Thus, the name. Davis initially made visits to Chappell Hill, Warrenton and Round Top to acquire interesting stock for her shop, but enjoyed the camaraderie so much she eventually decided to take part. “I decided to do a show with eight dealers and I was able to get a location in Warrenton at Hilltop Antiques. I stayed at a century-old two-room farmhouse that I rented from a sweet, older couple, Quentin and Vaddie Oeiser. We had so much fun,” she says. Every Thursday night Vaddie would make homemade stew for everyone who stayed at the house, and the group would sit on the back porch to eat and sample homemade wine. Quentin would pick the guitar and everyone would sing. These are fond memories for Davis. “One night after I had a little too much wine, I told Vaddie that it was my dream to have my own show in Round Top and I asked her if she could help me find a venue,” Davis says. Vaddie talked to her brother who was then commander of the American Legion Hall, and that’s how Davis came to lease the space. Her husband Dave, who passed away in 2017, was always her biggest supporter. They were a team and they built The Arbors from scratch, she says. “At first I was a wannabe. It didn’t take me long to realize I didn’t know what I was doing, but I’m a fast learner. I’ve never been competitive with other venues, just with myself,” she says. In addition to dedicated clientele, in more recent years Davis has been visited by celebrities seeking their own treasures: Tori Spelling, Elton John, Anderson Cooper, Rachel Ashwell, Joanna Gaines, Mary Steenburgen, Jessica

Robertson from Duck Dynasty, and former governor Rick Perry and his wife, Anita. She also welcomes busloads of designers and decorators. “She has so much energy I can’t keep up with her,” says Paula Whitfill, a colleague who manages special events and social media for Davis. “Last year, she personally led two large tour groups of designers and guests from Renovate Houston around the entire 12 acres, making introductions, and she never missed a step. She has that kind of enthusiasm and she is extremely knowledgeable not only about every kind of antique, but every dealer’s products on the field.” During the festivities, Davis is up every morning by seven. All day she walks the field and most nights she’s dining with dealers or attending local events. Round Top is her element, her home away from home. “It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. My first year the tent purveyor packed up and went home,” Davis says. She’s had rain, mud, troublesome winds, and longtime dealers who were lured away by other promoters. She’s had good years and not so good years but the journey has made her 50 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

wise in the ways of the field. She makes it a rule to stay onsite for six weeks and doesn’t leave until the site is clean — that’s part of her respect for the place. “It was important to Dave and it’s important to me to be a positive force in the Round Top community,” she says. Last year Davis hosted an opening night fundraiser for the Festival Institute and she plans more charitable events in the future. “The money we make from Curtis Ann renting the hall and property makes it possible for our group to plow money back into the community,” says Lynn Reavis, commander of the American Legion Post Number 338. “We have been able to pay for musical instruments for the students at Carmine, we’ve funded student scholarships, and we’ve made donations to the local fire departments and the public library. It’s made a real difference,” he says. As for Davis, she’s primed for the upcoming spring show that begins March 27. “I’m having fun and going strong, so even my girls say ‘don’t give up Round Top,’” says Davis. “For me, it’s a love thing, a labor of love.”

PRETTY AS A PICTURE Reclaimed 19th Century Hand Hewn Logs Turn Dream Into Reality By BarBara Canetti Photos By Jefferson Carroll PhotograPhy

T

hirty years ago David and Cheryl Snell purchased a print of a cabin in the woods by artist Terry Redlin. For years, David looked at that picture in his home and in his office and always dreamed of having a cabin like that. Fast forward to 2017 as the Baytown couple was watching a DIY Network show, Barnwood Builders, and Cheryl suggested they try to contact the show’s lead, Mark Bowe. They found an email for him, told him what they wanted and then expected to wait. However, the next day they got a call from Bowe, who said he was interested in a Texas project and the Snell’s property near New Braunfels sounded like something they could do. Hence huge logs from a 19th century cabin in West Virginia were harvested by Bowe’s team and shipped across the country to the Snell’s property where their weekend home was, on land that also had three ponds and room for a guest cabin and a party barn.

“We had been accumulating neat things for years and had no idea we would have a use for them someday.” — David Snell

Plans for the 900-square-foot cabin were developed and construction began. The guest cabin, which faces one of the ponds, was designed with one bedroom, a loft, a kitchen-dining-living room, and a long front porch facing the water. The interior walls in the bedroom and bathroom are shiplap wood; the large open living and eating area are the old logs, chinked professionally to seal the joints with a synthetic mortar. The logs are each about 30-inches wide, stacked on top of each other for a smooth surface. 52 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Mark Bowe from television’s Barnwood Builders repurposed logs from a 19th century cabin to create this peaceful retreat in New Braunfels. 53

A print by artist Terry Redlin inspired homeowners David and Cheryl Snell to build this warm and rustic 900-square-foot cabin in the woods.

“Mark said these are the biggest logs he had ever seen,” says Snell, adding “everything is big in Texas.” They used 32 logs for the exterior — eight on each side. “They finished the frame pretty quickly and then we started on the inside,” says Snell, a retired oil and gas professional. “We had been accumulating neat things for years and had no idea we would have a use for them someday.” The bedroom is decorated simply with an old iron bed on an area rug and a small bench nearby. The room’s ceiling is made from a recycled rusted tin roof that has been turned upside down. They added a set of double doors out to the porch and an ensuite bathroom. A vintage double sink was installed in the bathroom, along with old style mirrored cabinets over the sink. The kitchen also has a vintage sink and a Direct Action stove from the 1930s. Snell purchased a period reproduc-

tion refrigerator but, “everything else in that room is old and as period correct as we could be.” The comfortable living room faces a stone fireplace and is surrounded by a leather couch under a circular metal chandelier. Recycled windows give the room lots of natural light and a view of the pond outside. Snell said the cabin is just for guests, but thought there should be a place on his property for larger gatherings. So, along with Barnwood Builders, the Snells had a large 3,000-square-foot party barn constructed adjacent to the cabin. The wood for this structure came from a barn in Canada built in the 1700s. Snell had a kitchen, bar and bathroom built in the barn, which was designed with 18foot-high walls. One side of the barn is all glass doors, looking out onto another pond and cabin. The interior is an open space under the massive beams. A bar, with seats

for six guests, is fully stocked and ready for a party. Over the course of the construction, the Snells took Bowe and his team to nearby Round Top to the antique show. “Gears started turning and Mark and I set up The Boneyard at Round Top to sell old cabins, barns and wood to the public,” Snell says, explaining that Bowe’s West Virginia headquarters is also called the Boneyard. From that original location, Bowe has reclaimed and sold more than 500 pioneer-era structures. In addition, The Boneyard at Round Top will offer 18,000-square-feet of rental space to vendors, many with international ties, who want to participate in the antique festivals. “I thought it would be cool to build a cabin on our pond, and I was right,” Snell adds.

onte Smith thought he was designing and building a magnificent, but run-of-the-mill, Lake Conroe waterfront home. Boy, was he in for a

surprise. When the architectural designer and builder began the project, his clients had a typical budget and house plan in mind. Several upgrades later, the scale and budget had grown and the possibilities were unlimited. Smith was like a kid in a candy store (or a builder in a hardware store). He surveyed the space and location, conferred with his clients, and then he went for the moonshot. The resulting house is a modern European and Mediterranean-style home, with more in common with the Italian Riviera than other neighboring homes on Lake Conroe. Much of the house’s architecture was inspired by the owner’s travels. The family has spent time in Europe, including Greece and Italy, so the house features 60 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

From sunrise to sunset, the focal point of this spectacular home has to be the lake views. In selecting most of the furnishings, Restoration Hardware focused on graphite, pewter, bronze and vanilla tones from its RH modern collection.

European and Italian influences. It’s an oddity in Texas, says Smith, where house designs are more eclectic and mix and match. The exterior of the house is made of stone and stucco instead of bricks, and sports the trademark arches and red roof tiles of Mediterranean villas. But, instead of vinyl window frames, the homeowners chose aluminum windows, lending a contemporary feel that blends with the classic elements to create a transitional style for the exterior. The interior capitalizes on the home’s location. Thanks to the U-shaped house plan, the master bedroom, family room, kitchen and dining area, the game room, and the upstairs balcony all feature lakefront views of Lake Conroe.

62 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

In most homes, the living room is for sitting pretty. Smith wanted to make the family room a place where the owners and their loved ones could truly live, so he designed an open concept space that blends the kitchen, dining and family rooms. Smith also turned the breakfast nook into an additional dining room, creating another intimate space for meals. One of the central features of the house is the flooring from Color Interiors, the company responsible for the countertops, floors, showers and patio, as well as the installed limestone plank floor tiles in the entryway, kitchen and dining area. Those in the know will appreciate how labor intensive, and fragile, these limestone tiles can be; generally only about 20 feet can be installed in a single day.

Bold lighting, an exquisite floor made of limestone plank floors from Color Interiors, and a statement chandelier blend together to create a modern look that complements the Old World Italian exterior.

Luke Anglin of Color Interiors says the master bathroom is his favorite room in the house. He describes it as cool, contemporary and clean. The winter frost marble that makes up the floor creeps up the side of the bathtub and provides a seamless design from bathroom door to shower door. "It’s unbelievable. It really is. It's definitely a showpiece," says Anglin. Another subtle, yet distinctive, design element is the stairwell by Ross Metal Works that flows smoothly up to the second floor. The interlocking ovals of the handrails and design are also forged into the wrought iron front door. Similar to its architecture, the interior design is made to complement Lake Conroe. Furniture was essential to keeping the flow and unifying the theme for the house, says Smith. So even when designing the plans for the house, he considered furniture placement, relying on the

64 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

expertise and eye of interior designer and frequent collaborator Sherry Smith of Interiors by Sherry. The result: a unique, luxury home. Restoration Hardware selected most of the furnishings from the RH modern collection, using graphite, pewter, bronze, and vanilla — traditional hues of transitional style — to balance the Old World Italian exterior and contemporary interior. Suji Parikh of Restoration Hardware feels an affinity for the family room. "It’s family-centric, very conversational, and really creates the vibe of the home." But designing and furnishing the home wasn’t all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. Unlimited budget does not mean unlimited space. The owners wanted as many bathrooms as bedrooms; in the end fitting seven bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and a housekeeper’s suite into the home.

Family comes first in this specious home that features both intimate and open concept spaces for living and relaxation.

And they also had big plans for the downstairs game room: a pool table, a card table that seats six, a sectional sofa, and the correct distance for TV watching. Finding circulation space and pathways for family and guests to move around freely was a challenge. While the interior looks out over the pool and Lake Conroe, the outdoor living area has all the trappings one could hope for in a home this luxurious, including an outdoor kitchen and dining area. As the old saying goes, Money can’t buy happiness, but it can bring a luxury home to life.

SPRING HOME & GARDEN TOUR Houston Heights Association Rolls Out the Red Carpet By SuSie Tommaney

ho wouldn’t want to live in the historic Houston Heights district, with those magnificent Victorian homes that feature expansive porches, old phone nooks, stained glass and other architectural details that relied on skilled artisans and craftspersons? We can’t all live there but the next best thing is the annual Spring Home & Garden Tour on April 6-7, giving us an all-access pass to five amazing homes. THE SEEBURGER HOME, 734 ARLINGTON It took vision to see the potential in this neglected 1915 bungalow that had been vacant for years, lacking all utilities and with its front porch wrapped in a steel cage. Amy and Dave Seeburger took the plunge and, after a lengthy design and build process, they and their three children are enjoying this magnificent home that embraces the past. Original hardwood floors, multiple phone nooks and wall cabinets, shiplap, a salvaged leaded glass window, and 100-year-old doors ensure that history lives on.

68 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

THE JOHN HOME, 1539 RUTLAND We’re not embarrassed to say that we’re completely in love with Kelli and Scott John’s magical garden. Having fond memories of their time living in Surrey, the Johns drew inspiration from those English gardens with flagstone steps, inviting plants, and an intimate courtyard. It’s even scarier to think that this charming Victorian was on the verge of being torn down, but HDT builders brought it back to life. Now these empty nesters enjoy mornings and evenings in the garden and an infinitely shorter commute. THE NETHERLAND HOME, 1238 WAVERLY If you get a laid back, beachy vibe from this 1920 bungalow, it’s because homeowners Kristin and Houston Netherland infused elements they admired during trips to Seaside, Florida. A light color palette, wide plank oak floors, shiplap, a metal roof, and a charming white picket fence all combine to give that cheery, coastal feel. Renovations in 2013 and again in 2016 added space to the home, while the back yard features an outdoor playscape that works perfectly for their special needs daughter.

THE WOLFSHOHL HOME, 1427 WAVERLY We were left breathless by this expansive, modern home owned by Amy and Joshua Wolfshohl. Staggered first and second floors offer unobstructed views of the side yard with its swimming pool and large green space for dog Harley, while a shady pergola covers the outdoor kitchen for endless seasons of brisket by the pool. The interiors are light and bright, with polished cement flooring and a cool, Scandinavian vibe. The open concept first floor seamlessly blends dining, kitchen and living spaces. The Seeburger Home, 734 Arlington | Photo by Dave Seeburger

THE WEST HOME, 807 WEST 13TH Nothing could be finer than sitting in a rocker on the front porch of this 1940s bungalow. Susie and Harvey West lived in the home for a few years before deciding how best to expand; Harvey always felt it reminded him of his childhood home in central Texas. The couple managed to more than double its space while still keeping it a single-story structure, and have integrated some unique architectural details: standing seam metal roof, stained glass gable windows, and rainwater collection tanks. GARDENING

Story and photoS by JoShua Kornegay

ABOVE LEFT: Perennial species like this Mystic Spires Blue Salvia offer nectar-rich purple bloomspikes most of the year. ABOVE RIGHT: Blue mistflower (Eupatorium coelestinum) is a rugged and easy to grow native perennial that is also a guaranteed butterfly attractant.

LEFT: The incense passion flower (Passiflora) vine is an easy to grow host plant for the Gulf fritillary butterfly. This heavy bloomer is both winter-hardy and fragrant. RIGHT: A pipevine swallowtail nectaring on porterweed (Stachytarpheta jamaicaensis). The porterweed is a low-growing and sprawling evergreen shrub that makes an excellent addition to a butterfly garden, and also is attractive to hummingbirds.

FOR MORE THAN JUST FLOWERS Easy Ways to Attract and Keep Butterflies in Your Garden

I

t's a delight to see butterflies in the garden. But how to keep them there? It's easier than you think. The key is to have the two different plants they like. One is the nectar plant. There are hundreds of different plant species that can offer this life-giving sweet substance, including the butterfly bush, lantana, pentas, liatris, coreopsis, and purple coneflower. Pictured on these pages are just a few reliable and easy to grow perennials that can accomplish that. The other and more important key are the host plants. Each butterfly species relies on a very specific plant species on which to oviposit her eggs. The monarch, for example, will only lay her eggs on a suitable place for her caterpillars to eat. In this case it's the Asclepius genus. There are many species in this plant family but they still must be milkweed Asclepids for the caterpillars to survive. Almost all insects are very picky in this respect and are species specific about the plants they require to complete their life cycle. 76 house& home | March 2019 | www.houstonhouseandhome.net

Another example is the pipevine swallowtail. After mating the female will only lay eggs on the plants she knows will provide food for her soon to hatch offspring. In this case it’s the Aristolochia genus, also known as Dutchman’s pipes because of the flower shape; hence the name “pipevine” for the butterflies. The Gulf fritillary butterfly must find passion vines on which to lay her eggs. It's the only plant the caterpillars will eat; nothing else. The eastern black swallowtail is a little less picky but the plant selection must still be in the dill, fennel or parsley families. Easy right? So plant nectar-rich flowers to attract the butterflies, but plant their host plants to keep them around. These two rules are all you need for a garden full of different butterflies. Remember, "Work less, enjoy more!" Joshua’s Native Plants & Garden Antiques, Inc. can be found at 502 West 18th, 713-862-7444, joshuasnativeplants.net.

ook at this adorable girl with a megawatt smile! Sophie is a 2.5-year-old mix who found herself back at the Houston SPCA because her family just didn’t have time to give her the attention she craves. They said she was lovely with their kids — very sweet and gentle. But she’s an active dog and they were just too busy for her, especially having just had a baby. Sophie is smart so she needs activities to keep her busy, like puzzle toys and other brain games. She’d also love someone who could take her running. Wouldn’t waking up to a smile like that be the perfect way to start your day?. FEMALE ID #326202 2.5 years old The Houston SPCA, 900 Portway Drive, is open seven days a week, Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to make choosing the adoption option as easy as possible.
