pril has us relishing the weather and the joys of spending time outdoors. Again and again we walk outside, inhale vigorously and proclaim the day “a beautiful day.” Surrounded by such loveliness, April is the ideal month for Houstonians to observe Earth Day, but it’s not just celebrated here, Earth Day marks its 40th anniversary this year and is a big deal around the world. In honor of Earth Day, our April issue is dedicated to green building and renovation for your home and garden. In recent years, environmental issues and economic urgency have converged, which may just bring out a green lining from behind the dark cloud. Innovations in energy efficiency, waste reduction and water conservation are hitting the mainstream, thanks to dedicated environmentalists and creative thinkers who are daring to make a positive impact on the how the masses do things, or more accurately, use things. Houstonians may not have a terrific track record when it comes to historic preservation, but we are learning to act when pieces of our past are threatened, perhaps we have taken a cue from our neighbor Galveston. Two great Art Deco treasures of our city have been targeted by retail development. The charming River Oaks Theater has

dodged the wrecking ball for now, but now its sister, the iconic Alabama Theater on South Shepherd at W. Alabama appears to be in jeopardy. The Alabama remained intact as a Bookstop for decades, but Barnes & Noble closed the location last fall. Weingarten Realty is reportedly in talks with Staples (and others) and is considering gutting the theater’s Art Deco interior to make the space more retail friendly. The old theater is a true work of art and a functional piece of Houston history. I encourage you to stay on top of this story via www.swamplot.com. Here’s a preservation success story to inspire you. One Houstonian who dared to save an old building is our own Tim Beeson. His restoration of a 1906 house in the Heights earned him a Good Brick Award from the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance last year. The astounding project, which went from eyesore to incredible, has just received a 2010 Preservation Texas Honor Award. Congrats, Tim. Preservation is a great way to celebrate Earth Day. Celebrate the earth every day, not just on April 22. Sandra Cook Editor

GREEN REVIVAL IN GALVESTON Historic homes tour highlights green methods – old and new. May 1, 2 & 8, 9 Since 1954, Galveston Historical Foundation has worked to save hundreds of treasures in the island city. GHF begins a new era in its nationally renowned preservation efforts with the 36th Annual Galveston Historic Homes Tour the first two weekends in May. Among 10 houses that open to the public during the annual historic homes tour is the Green Revival House, a modest 19thcentury cottage being restored by GHF in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The tour also emphasizes historic green architecture, the building methods developed to make homes more comfortable prior to the widespread availability of luxuries such as electricity, municipal water systems and natural gas. Before they had electric fans, owners of many of Galveston’s oldest homes relied on floor-to-ceiling windows that could be thrown open to catch every available breeze. Spacious hallways and staircases helped air circulation. Cisterns caught rainwater for drinking, cooking, bathing and irrigation. This year’s homes tour sets the tone for GHF’s future restoration programs—to help the public find affordable old homes for restoration while keeping them informed of the best ways to preserve historic green features and incorporate modern green elements. Tour information and tickets: 409.765.7834 or www.galvestonhistory.org.
Green Revival House, 31st Street at Avenue Q How “green” can a historic house restoration be? This house was doomed to the landfill after Hurricane Ike knocked the house off its six-foot piers, but Galveston Historical Foundation rescued it by finding a new lot for it and orchestrating its revival. The 1,000-square-foot house is a typical small family dwelling like mnay found throughout the Island’s historic neighborhoods. “It’s often been said now that the ‘greenest’ building is one that has already been built,” said Dwayne Jones, GHF executive director. As word spread about the project among preservationists, area businesses that already are making their marks in green historical renovations have enthusiastically agreed to participate in the project, said Matthew Pelz, Partners in the Field project coordinator with GHF. Some are donating technology for the house, including an innovative 23-foot-tall, birdfriendly backyard wind turbine to generate electricity. In the model house, GHF’s goals are to preserve or reuse over 90 percent of existing materials. Of additional materials, more than 90 percent will be salvaged items or made from recycled material. Nearly 100 percent of the tiny amount of waste material generated by the project will be diverted from landfills to recycling plants or other uses. The Green Revival house will continue to be utilized as a teaching tool for GHF’s ongoing restoration classes and programs for the months to come. For more information about participating in Galveston Historical Foundation’s Green Revival Showhouse Project, contact Matthew Pelz at 409.764.7834.

The current owners have reclaimed the space below the home and use it as a working office. James and Ella Davis House, 1899, 1315 24th Street Built in 1899 for Galveston Daily News reporter James ‘Nat’ Davis, this house was designed by renowned German architect Charles Bulger. Bulger is second only to architect Nicholas Clayton in importance to Galveston’s architectural history. Conness-Arnold House, 1899, 1417 24th Street This Queen Anne style house features rounded double galleries, rimmed with lintels and replete with radiating ball spindles. Tall windows and wrap around porches on the east and south side of the home face the prevailing Gulf breezes. John and Agnes Roemer Cottage, 1888, 2415 Avenue L This five-bay gable fronted cottage was built for Agnes Moser Roemer and her husband, John. The $1,350 purchase price included wallpaper in every room, weatherboard siding, slate roof, heart pine floors, eight doors, 18 windows and 13 sets of window blinds. James and Jessie Fendley Cottage, 1885, 1403 Tremont The current owners of this high-raised Victorian cottage recently completed a renovation and restoration using many materials recycled and repurposed that they purchased from architectural salvage warehouses in Galveston and Houston. Ernest Stavenhagen House, 1915, 1527 Postoffice This Classical Revival house, with its commanding presence, boldly stands out from its Victorian neighbors. The most prominent feature is the front gabled entry portico. The paired boxed columns of the double-galleried portico are the modern interpretation of a classical colonnade.

Going to the beauty shop for a haircut is not the usual way to gain a client, but Cathy Clark was having problems with her condo and needed my help. “The living room/dining spaces were getting on my nerves and just weren’t relaxing,” she explains. “”The rooms looked jumbled up to me and I couldn’t figure out how to pull them together. ” Cathy had bought some bright orange fabric and was instinctively delaying putting it on her dining chairs. We drove to her nearby condo and had a look. Since her place was wonderful, it just needed a few tweaks to make it spectacular. In one meeting and a few emails we transformed her condo. I agreed that the orange fabric would be too bright for the dining room chairs and would drown out both the Charles

Busy wallpaper and unused shutters on the pass through were cluttering the dining room. There was no place for the stereo, and the armchair looked tired and out of place.
Because the orange fabric was already paid for, I recommended she use it as piping on the armchair (given to her by an old friend, Tom Hooper, in the late ’60s along with the ornately-painted antique end table) and to pipe the existing paisley pillow on the chaise. I loved the brown Donghia fabric she had already purchased for the armchair on Ebay. Since the seat cushion never fit the chair properly, I suggested she ask my upholsterer if he could recycle the existing cushion by cutting it down to fit. and pass through shutters was a minor change with major impact, and created space for wall-hung speakers and new custom bookcases (which store the stereo system). Rearranging the newly upholstered chair created more space in the small condo and new trim brought out the orange tones in the artwork.
Adding storage was crucial, and a small two-drawer side table from www.brocade.com # 1000259 was inexpensive and holds bulky telephone books and other items beside the sofa. To tie the light sofa into the room, I recommended she add two pillows—one in the same orange fabric (with dark piping) to tie into the orange piping on the chair to the horse artwork, and another brown pillow to tie the chair and chaise into the decorating scheme and rugs. Cathy had some brown animal print fabric from Calico Corners for the pillow and she used similar dark eyelash fringe on it that she had used on the chaise pillow. I gave her the name of my sewing workroom to make the pillows.

A friend gave Cathy two colorful Spanish chairs, which were reupholstered in seafoam leather. The metal stair rails were painted a darker color, as was the wall above the stairs. The desktop accessories were moved closer together.
I recommended that she paint the white stair rails a deeper color that coordinates with her walls—Pratt & Lambert “Diplomat Gray” # 2292 and to paint the upstairs wall the same color, which adds drama to the space and makes the ornate Dutch marquetry secretary chest under the stairs pop out. The secretary was in her uncle Earl Mitchell’s estate, which he bought from actress Mae West’s estate. (She lived in a nearby apartment from him in West Hollywood for 50 years.) Flanked with a pair of ornate Spanish chairs (a gift from her dear friend John Shively), Cathy used my upholsterer to recover the once red seats in seafoam green/taupe pebbly leather she bought for $5 on Ebay. Now there is color all around the room. The candlesticks, a gift from her dear friend Will Whitmer, and the antique tole box on stand, a gift from her uncle, needed “tightening up”, and were moved closer together on top of the secretary for more impact. diy decorating To further update the space, I suggested she remove the dated wallpaper and paint the dining room and entry walls the same Pratt and Lambert “Cadet Gray” she used on the walls. After carefully asking, I also recommended Cathy remove the dining shutters on the pass through to the kitchen, since she never used them. This freed up enough wall space to hang her vintage l980s Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers on the wall. The speakers are so handsome they look like art. Now her mother’s chandelier really shows up in the dining room.
trade secrets • THINK GREEN – recovering existing furniture keeps them out of the landfill and saves money, too. • GET CREATIVE – Painting a stair railing adds style and impact. • SOMETIMES THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY is not to buy more furniture and accessories for your home, but to first rethink the pieces that are already paid for.
Bookcases don’t have to be tall. Sometimes shorter > ones painted the same color as the wall can “disappear” but still add function.
tip
Since Cathy needed some bookshelves to house her stereo system, I recommended she ask her carpenter Gus Lemus to build short ones – constructed on each side of the pass through – and that he paint them the same color as the wall so they would not make the dining room feel even smaller. Their location also would not interfere with pulling the dining chairs out and sitting down at the antique table, which Cathy had previously painted black. After our visit, Cathy was excited. “I felt like you listened to my likes and dislikes and came up with a plan on paper which I could easily follow,” she says. The biggest surprise? Suggesting that she paint the upper staircase wall and rails a deep gray, which she loves. She was amazed at what could be accomplished with minimal dollars spent. “The rooms feel so much warmer – more finished. I am so comfortable here now,” Cathy adds.

RANDY EVANS SHARES HIS INSIGHTS FOR PLANTING A COOK’S GARDEN IN HOUSTON

It’s muddy on this murky March day, and half a dozen little fruit trees stand bravely against the wind and wet. “We should’ve planted two weeks ago,” he says looking up at the sky. “But this winter’s been so cold.” A garden was always part of Evans’ grand design when he opened Haven last November. The restaurant is billed as “A Seasonal Kitchen.” Most of the menu selections are sourced from around Texas, including vegetables from Houston’s surrounding counties, fish from purveyors along the Gulf, and meat from the Hill Country and Panhandle. Add to that mix Evans’ core commitment to make as many condiments, confections, breads and charcuterie in-house and you have the makings for a true homegrown restaurant. But that wasn’t enough for Evans. He wanted to be able to grow his own ingredients.

“I took a course on urban gardening last year through Urban Harvest,” Evans says. “I really recommend it to anyone thinking about growing their own garden.” He says the five-month course gave him new insight on planting cycles, what fruits, vegetables and herbs grow well in the city, and how he could make the whole thing as self-sustaining as possible. He enlisted the assistance of one of his produce providers, Gita van Woerden of Animal Farm in Cat Springs. She supplied cedar for the raised beds he wanted to create, and they agreed to a symbiotic composting arrangement: he’d offer her his daily kitchen scraps, if she’d turn it into compost and bring it back for use in the garden. “The soil outside here won’t really work for planting,” he says. “So, we’re using a mushroom compost as our ABOVE: The Haven Airmail is made with lavender-infused Texas rum, lime, local honey and sparkling wine. © KURT HOLTER - FOTOLIA.COM

base.” He says. “We put in a drum to catch rainwater,” he points out the shiny silver 500-gallon cistern at the end of the restaurant. “And here,” he indicates the fence, “we’ll put in a grape arbor, and we’ll use the space for climbing produce, like tomatoes and cucumbers.” By late May, Evans figures he’ll be harvesting the first of the summer’s Heirloom tomatoes, and he’ll be looking forward to a host of hot peppers: chilis, jalapenos, polblanos, habaneros. He anticipates peas, green beans and yellow wax beans as well. “All of those do really well in Houston,” he advises. “And they have anywhere from a 45 to a 60-day growing season, so you can see results fairly quickly.” He laughs. “I’m having a blast going through seed catalogues.” Over the next year and a half, he’ll be planting lime and Meyer lemon trees, which he also advises home gardeners to think about planting. Evans’ belief in sustainability has infiltrated all facets of Haven; both staff and diners are excited about the project. Evans thinks that’s fantastic. “When people get a chance to really see how the food cycle works, where things come from, what it takes to grow that one pepper on your plate, it gives a whole new appreciation for food.” To find information on Urban Harvest’s upcoming garden classes, call 713.880.5540 or go to www.urbanharvest.org. Plan Ahead For Arbor Antiques’ Fall Shows in Round Top & Kemah Round Top Fall 2010 Show: Sept. 24-Oct. 2 Antiques by the Bay 2010: Nov. 5-7, Premier Party Thursday, Nov. 4 Curtis Ann and Dave Davis owned The Arbor House for 10 years in Alvin before launching their first Antique Show. When asked what inspired her to become a show promoter Curtis Ann replied “Starting out as an exhibitor myself, renting space and having little or no voice over certain aspects of doing shows; I wanted to implement my ideas and hopefully offer dealers and shoppers something more.” Arbor Antiques Services also operates estate sales in Texas and beyond, providing a liquidation service to secure disposition of individual items or entire estates. The impressive Arbor Antiques venue at Round Top is a 12-acre show featuring world-class antiques dealers from around the globe. Celebrating its 25th season in Spring 2010, Arbor Antiques has a solid reputation as a stand out show and "must-do" shopping destination while at Round Top. Look for the white tents one mile north of Round Top Square on Hwy 237. Expect fine European and American antique furniture, antique linens, American primitives, original works of art and artist signed Native American jewelry. The Arbor Antiques Show at Round Top carries a large inventory of original artwork with dealers carrying both antique and contemporary artwork. You’ll find artists in attendance as well. Shoppers enjoy free admission and free parking on site, and can fuel up with a good breakfast or lunch in the cafe or try one of the individual food vendors
on grounds. Dealers and shoppers can check their email or research their purchases using the on-site Wi-Fi service. Pit stops are easy and accessible in the clean and maintained air-conditioned Comfort Station or the handicapped-accessible facility. For those wanting to stay on grounds for the evening, there are RV spaces with hook-ups. Arbor Antiques is proud to be part of the Round Top Show tradition. Season after season, year after year, dealers and shoppers alike come to the same place with their common interest – antiquing. It’s not something you can explain, it’s something you just have to experience. Last spring Curtis Ann was approached by the City of Kemah to promote an antiques event in their charming town on Galveston Bay. Antiques by the Bay debuted in November 2009 and is now a must-see show on the Gulf Coast. Located just 27 miles INFORMATION: southeast of Houston off Curtis Ann Davis Hwy 146, Kemah is 281-388-1075 known for its waterfront Fax: 281-331-0840 restaurants and B&Bs, Email: curtisann@arborantiques.com so it’s an ideal location Website: www.arborantiques.com or for antiquing. THE FUND FOR HUMANITY’S MISSION STATEMENT: What the poor need is not charity but capital, not caseworkers but co-workers. And what the rich need is a wise, honorable and just way of divesting themselves of their overabundance. The Fund for Humanity will meet both of these needs. Money for the fund will come from shared gifts by those who feel they have more than they need and from non-interest bearing loans from those who cannot afford to make a gift but who do want to provide working capital for the disinherited . . . The fund will give away no money. It is not a handout. HABITAT TODAY Through the work of Habitat, thousands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem – decent housing for all. Today, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 300,000 houses, sheltering more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.

WITH AN EXPANDING VARIETY OF ECO-FRIENDLY CHOICES, HOMEOWNERS FIND IT'S EASY GOING GREEN. FROM WOOD, CORK AND BAMBOO TO TILE – EVEN CARPET – THE DESIGN OPTIONS ARE ALMOST UNLIMITED.
GREEN FLOORING “Sustainable,” “eco-friendly” and “green” talk are more and more common in home design and construction these days. And it’s about time. One way to walk the “green” walk, is to stop and notice what you’re walking on. Flooring is central to an environmentally friendly home because it covers, well, every square inch of it. It’s also an aspect of the home that can go green without major renovation or sky-high prices.

“We’ve definitely seen a huge increase (in requests for green material) just in the last year,” says Paige Haynes, gallery manager at Daltile – Houston Tile and Stone Gallery. “Consumers are being much more aware of the environment and their footprint. They are asking questions about products made from recycled materials, LEED (an internationally recognized green building) certification, and even where things are made. Mileage cuts down on the footprint.” The demand for sustainable materials has certainly increased in the last few years, and the market is starting to match the demand with a versatile, approachable supply. Green options are available for almost any flooring type, from hardwood to carpet to tile. How green you go really depends on flexibility – in both budget and aesthetic. “Unfortunately, the true green products are very expensive,” said Harry Schillings, owner of Spring Carpets. But many green choices, like economically sound tile, are both affordable and beautiful.

DESIGN & ESTIMATE
HARDWOOD
The hardwood aesthetic probably offers the widest spectrum of ecologically sound products, however, only a few of them are actually wood. BAMBOO: A rapidly renewable resource, bamboo is one of the most popular flooring options for the environmentally aware. The plant can be cut down about every six years, and then, it grows back from the same root stock, says Ann Knight, global brand director and executive vice president of Teragren, the nation’s leading manufacturer of environmentally conscious bamboo flooring, countertops, panels and veneer. “(Our bamboo) is grown without pesticides so there is nothing in the growing process that harms the earth.” Bamboo releases 35 percent more oxygen and absorbs about four times more carbon than a comparable cluster of trees. To underscore this point, Teragren lists on every product box how much carbon that bamboo removed from the earth. Stressing the increased demand for green products, Knight says that bamboo accounts for 60 percent of Teregren’s flooring sales. Manufacturers of bamboo floors now offer many more options in grain and color, so it appeals to all home styles. CORK: This material is growing in popularity but remains fairly expensive. Cork is strictly protected in the limited areas of the world where it grows from the Cork Oak, and it is also a rapidly renewable resource. Schillings covered his office floor in cork three years ago, and due to its comfort, unusual look and durability, he said, the cost – about twice as much as some hardwoods – was certainly worth it.

CERTIFIED WOOD PRODUCTS: Forestry Stewardship Council certified wood has been harvested and milled according to strict standards that require a third-party audit of production. The certification is expensive, so it’s important to remember that some smaller companies may follow the standards but can’t afford the certification, according to SustainableFlooring.com.

are natural, these carpets also tend to be easily maintained. Also, look for the American National Standards Institute’s national sustainability standard for carpet products. The voluntary standard offers three levels of reduced environmental impact: silver, gold, and platinum. TILE
RECLAIMED WOOD: Basically recycled wood. Definitely green but can be expensive and limited in quantity. RENEWABLE WOOD PRODUCTS: Some wood flooring, like the BALK line from IKEA, is made from renewable wood, wood chips and wood fibers. This product can also be broken down for recycling. Renewable simply means the source will grow back. CARPET
Carpet has an unfortunate past in terms of impact on the planet, but things are changing for the better. More and more, carpet is made with pre-consumer recycled content – scraps from manufacturing – as well as post-consumer recycled content. Waste from carpet manufacturing is bettered monitored, and carpet tiles now allow removal and replacement of portions of carpet, thus reducing waste. Looking for sustainable carpet? Try natural fibers, such as sea grass, sisal, wool or a blend of these. Materials like wool may be more expensive, but “that’s about as green as it gets,” Schillings says. Because they

Tile offers many ecologically friendly options and does so in a variety of styles and price brackets. Many tiles contain recycled materials, which is often a combination of unwanted glass, stone, dirt and sometimes plastic. Manufacturers can process these materials into a fine powder, and then, into recycled tile. For example, IceStone, which can be found at Daltile - Houston Tile and Stone Gallery, consists of 100 percent recycled glass, diverting “hundreds of tons of glass from landfills each year,” according to the product’s manufacturer. The tile is even made in a renovated, day-lit factory in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Another important issue is where tile is manufactured, says Haynes of Daltile. “We are switching plants to be closer to home, and we have a lot more products that are helping with fuel-efficiency because they are manufactured within a 500-mile radius,” she says. Another bonus is cost, Haynes says. With tile, the cost of green products is the “same or even less.” Get even greener with environmentally friendly tile adhesives, which have no or very low emission of VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
Eco-friendly wool has long been a preferred rug and carpet material.

SOLID GREEN NEW WEST U. AREA HOME IS ULTRA-GREEN, HURRICANE-READY & ARCHITECTURALLY FRIENDLY TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Story by Sandra Cook • Photos Courtesy of Ker Thomson
Editor’s Note: Our Green issue features a drastically different type of new home construction. While many of our feature stories showcase the aesthetic, this particular home is a paragon of durability, green-mindedness and seriously sensible design. And it is a lovely home, but a new, more evolved type of home. This story began when Houstonian Ker Thomson set out to build a new home for his family. Ker and his wife Rachel and two kids had outgrown their 1950s house in Lynn Park near Highland Village. Ker was highly interested in green building practices, so he started researching and found a lot of conflicting opinions and methods. Ker soon concluded that “the traditional ‘bricks, sticks, and fiberglass insulation’ home construction techniques are not even close to the way a house should be built” Ker wrote in an article submitted to the Journal of Green Building. “It had become clear that traditional home building is done for the
L E F T : After years of research Ker Thomson teamed up with builder Jim Kuchenbrod to build the greenest, sturdiest house in Houston. Its beguiling brick, stone and stucco exterior are supported within by ultra-stable, energy-saving insulated concrete forms. Moss Landscaping installed drip irrigation and low profile sprinkler heads to water the various native grasses, low-water-use and drought-resistant plants for a 30% reduction in water use compared to traditional landscaping. A B O V E : A primary goal for the project was to build a house that will last for generations in the challenging Gulf Coast climate, while staying competitive with the current market for the area.
49
A B O V E : Bamboo, recycled wood, wood from sunken old trees, even tile were considered for the main level. With such high visibility, aesthetics factored in greatly, so a wide plank Brazilian Cherry was selected. The solution Ker and Jim found was engineered flooring by a German-designed plant in Brazil that utilized only a 3/16th-inch-thick covering of the Brazilian Cherry.
L E F T : The quest to create an attic that made sense led the team to opt for an unventilated roof-attic assembly that works as stabilizing, insulating system. It’s comprised of heavy duty DECRA Shingle Plus roofing panels, 2x2 treated battens, a TCM-4RW radiant barrier/vapor barrier, Grace Ice and Water Shield on the entire roof deck, a 5/8-inch roof decking that is independently screwed into the rafters. The rafters are hurricane-strapped to each other and anchored to the ICF wall system. Lastly, Icynene open-cell foam is sprayed under the roof deck and covering all the wood elements of the roof assembly.
O P P O S I T E : The interior walls are all painted with Sherwin Williams Greensure low-odor, no-VOC paints. The paints provide long-lasting color, are anti-microbial and are manufactured using techniques that reduce their environmental impact.

‘day of sale’ and I was looking to build for the long haul.” Ker’s quest for a better way to build a house lead him to Texas A&M University’s Energy Systems Laboratory. This partnership produced a sound building system based on strength, system synergies, durability, comfort, safety, efficiency and yet, with a sharp eye on practically and cost. After all of the research and development, Ker began looking for a capable, like-minded builder. He interviewed eight experienced local builders, all of solid reputation and many considered “green” builders, but few were interested and none was the right fit. Then Todd Rice of Rice Residential Design, suggested Ker contact Jim Kuchenbrod, a builder with 30 years’ construction experience, including building 38 previous ICF houses (more on these later) made him an ideal candidate. Jim and Ker instantly connected on the concept of the house and soon Jim moved to Houston from Florida and joined Durable Residentail Builders as a partner. “It was like ‘where have you been all my life?’” says Jim. “I saw that
he wanted to build a better home, utilizing ICF (insulated concrete forms) for the entire structure, creating a machine of stability.” The ICF sections are building blocks that are filled on-site with reinforcing bars and concrete. The result is a house made of walls that are is structurally sound, insulated, includes a vapor barrier and is ready for final exterior and interior finishes to be applied. INSIDE STORY
In its finished state, the home looks like any other upscale new construction project, with loads of attractive details and handsome materials. With four bedrooms and five and a half baths, it is a peaceful haven for Ker’s family of five. Peaceful? Those solid-core ICF walls provide outstanding sound insulation. From the foundation to the wiring to the insulation, the home was designed to achieve a ‘Fortified’ rating from the Institute for Building and Home Safety (IBHS). This is a designation awarded to homes of exceptional
51
Dim-able lighting was installed throughout the house, along with compact florescent lights (CFLs) that are now available in appealing color tones. Ker said, “Any home is well served by dim-able lighting. It sets a mood, it saves energy, it extends the life span of the bulb.”
strength and threat resistance. Among other criteria, the house was engineered to withstand winds up to 130 mph (20 mph over the FEMA wind speed zone designation for Harris County). Collaborating with the Energy Systems Laboratory at Texas A&M University, Ker went through exhaustive analysis of every single ingredient for the house. Nothing escaped their microscopic scrutiny. Plus, Ker’s family was moving into the home, so every consideration, every choice was a personal one. What follows is a summary of the home’s well-researched durable and energyefficient elements.
To make outdoor entertaining more enjoyable, Natures Pest Control installed an Envirogreen Mosquito Control System, which uses a misted sodium-based product that acts as a drying agent to kill mosquitoes. It is 100% non-toxic to the point where Envirogreen is classified as a minimal risk pesticide by the EPA. 52
house& home | A p r i l 2 0 1 0 | h o u s e a n d h o m e o n l i n e . com
O P P O S I T E : Architect Todd Rice of Rice Residential Designs embraced the concepts of the building system and designed a home for the home and had expertise and experience in ICF construction and green home building. The result is a house that is very much in line with other new homes in the neighborhood.
53
FOUNDATION: The Slab on Builders Pier provides an extra-thick concrete slab is connected to every wall with several feet of rebar. This makes the entire house function as a machine of stability. STRUCTURE: ICF Walls (Insulated concrete forms) for the entire structure, creating a “machine of stability.” The ICF sections are building blocks that are filled on-site with reinforcing bars and concrete. The result is a house made of walls that are is structurally sound, insulated, includes a vapor barrier and is ready for final exterior and interior finishes to be applied. ROOF SYSTEM: Sealed attic, semi-ventilated roof The attic and roof are undeniably critical to the home’s performance. Icynene open-cell foam was sprayed under the roof deck and covers all the wood elements of the roof assembly, which yields a very comfortable attic. Ker reports that even on a 104 degree day in August, the temperature is within three degrees of the conditioned living space and only fractionally more humid. Each of the rafters is hurricane strapped to each other and anchored to the ICF wall system. Strategic staggering of DECRA shingles allows excess heat to escape, effectively managing the heat and wind extremes.
COOLING & HEATING: HVAC with chilled water system A Thermalflow HVAC system (where the coil is filled with chilled water) was utilized, boasting an estimated SEER performance of between 15 and 19. The system is minimally affected by the weather. As ambient temperatures rise, the efficiency drop-off is only about 10% of the decline of traditional refrigerant home systems. This is the first system of its kind in Houston. RAINWATER HARVESTING: The roof spans approximately 5,000 square feet. Given that rainfall in Houston averages three to six inches per month there is ample opportunity to catch and store water. Durable Residential builders put together a system to easily harvest water from approximately 70% of the roof, collecting in a sealed 11,500 gallon underground cistern. From there water is pumped directly for irrigation of the lawn and landscape and through a filtration unit for potable water in the home. The home, at 3703 Drummond, is exclusively marketed by Martha Turner Properties. See more at www.HAR.com.

Lucky Dog
Marvin Johnson, a former oceanographer, has been making unique, hand-crafted furniture from reclaimed wood, metal and stone for the past 15 years.
He named his company Lucky Dog Designs after rescuing a stray dog that had been run over on the street in front of his workshop. You could say that Johnson rescues strays with his furniture creations, too. Johnson salvages things from trash piles, collects materials from house and building demolition sites, picks up driftwood and works with sentimental pieces that clients bring to him. With this always varied selection of materials, Johnson creates styles, stunning furniture pieces. “We make a lot of dining tables and bar counters by cutting big planks from downed trees,” says Johnson. “It’s rewarding to give something back, when it was a family’s favorite tree. It’s kind of nice to keep it in the family, instead of shipping if off to a landfill or to be turned into mulch.” From tree trunks, Johnson creates “live edge” pieces that maintain the natural, irregular edge and feature a smooth, refined finish. He also crafts more traditional chests, tables, armoires and more from recycled wood waste. Inspired by every project, Johnson uses hand tools only to shape, sand, carve and refine the wood as he gives it new life and purpose. 203 West 20th Street • 713.501.5964 • www.luckydoghouston.com
