any of us are delighted by how nature sheds its winter blues and spreads out its colorful display. With all the trees, plants and critters embracing their “out with the old in with the new” attitude, it’s enough to inspire us homeowners to tackle some things we’ve been pondering or putting off. Home tours are one of the best ways to gather ideas for home improvement, interior design and landscaping projects. Walking through well-designed homes can help you establish project goals, select final details, or even decide whether to stay in your current home or move to a home that better suits your tastes and needs. We discovered our April home feature through the Houston Modern Home Tour, held earlier this year. This new home with a unique concept caught our eye as not only a stunning example of Mid Century Modern styling, but as a refreshing, one-story dwelling built in an established inner-loop neighborhood. Springtime is prime time for home tours across the Houston area. Many tours highlight specific areas, such as the Historic Houston Heights Home & Garden Tour, Garden Oaks Home & Garden

Tour, and the Galveston Historic Homes Tour. The coming weeks also bring the widespread Houston Pond Tour, which features close to 30 exotic water gardens in not only central Houston, but also Katy, Sugar Land, Spring, The Woodlands and Cypress. Another unique tour features just one home, but it’s a very special event, organized by the Pink Ribbon’s Project to raise funds for breast cancer research and patient care at Baylor College of Medicine. The 2012 Pink Ribbon House, a five-bedroom home in Memorial’s Hunter’s Creek Village, features beautiful interiors donated by seven Houston design firms. Speaking of talented designers, are you intimidated to address the décor of your own home? Turn to our article on creating a look for your home that suits your personal style. You’ll find great tips from savvy designers for getting started and explains how hiring a designer can actually save you money on decorating your home. Hooray for spring! his kitchen, built 25 years ago, needed help. It felt cramped because of the door placed in the center of the kitchen, the fur downs over the cabinets and the layout of the cabinetry. Using my 3-D design program, I shared several different plans for the kitchen with the homeowners. I helped them choose all the finishes and then we completely gutted the kitchen. About ten weeks later, the kitchen was transformed into this beautiful space! For this transformation, we used granite for the perimeter of the kitchen, travertine on the island, tumbled marble for the backsplash, mosaic border over the gas range, apron front sink and oak hardwood flooring. I have been designing, decorating, building, remodeling and landscaping in the Houston area for over 10 years. For help in any one or all of these areas and for a free consultation, please call Sabrine at 713.906.5149. To see more pictures of this kitchen as well as other transformations, visit www.sabrinemurphy.com and be sure to click on the Blog link for tips and ideas. 13

Last month, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston debuted the first-ever monographic exhibition of paintings by 17th Century Dutch still-life painter Willem van Aelst. Co-organized by the MFAH, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation, Elegance and Refinement: The StillLife Paintings of Willem van Aelst features 28 of the artist’s finest works culled from private and public collections in the United States and Europe. Recognized as one of the leading painters in the Dutch Republic during the “Golden Age” of Dutch painting, he was largely forgotten by the 19th century. The exhibition aims to restore Van Aelst’s stature by showcasing his technical brilliance, attention to detail and ingenious brushwork for 21st-century audiences to discover. The exhibit continues at the MFAH through May 28. Information: 713.639.7300 or www.mfah.org.

Houston’s own Rice University is home to the only university art museum in the nation dedicated to site-specific installation art. Rice Gallery presents temporary, large-scale environments that visitors can enter and explore. Artists typically use inexpensive materials to create stunning works of art. Opening April 13 and continuing through June 24, Rice Gallery’s commission of Japanese artist Yasuaki Onishi coincides with the Grand Opening of the Asia Society Texas Center’s new Houston headquarters designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. Yasuaki Onishi’s creation for Rice Gallery, reverse of volume (RG) employs the simplest materials – translucent plastic sheeting, strings of black glue, and fishing line – to create monumental forms that resemble mountains or clouds floating in space. His process of “casting the invisible” involves draping the sheeting over objects, which are removed to leave only their impressions. Onishi views this process of “reversing” sculpture to be a meditation on the nature of the negative space, or void, left behind. Information: 713.348.6069 or www.ricegallery.org. This gallery show is for those handyman types and anyone who appreciates their work. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft features the fascinating woodcarvings of Houston Heights resident Chris Hedrick. The exhibition, Implied Utility, runs April 14-June 10. Hedrick’s meticulous, yet humorous works depict hacksaws and power drills, hammers and rakes that elevate these hardworking, old-school tools to new artistic heights. The show is an experience a delightful combination of beauty, accuracy, wit and irony. Information: 713.529.4848 or www.crafthouston.org.

A Splash of Style Subtle changes in form and function refresh and refine a tiny condo kitchen BY JOETTA MOULDEN • PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANET LENZEN

BEFORE

Going to the hair salon is not the usual way to gain a client, but hairdresser Cathy Clark was having problems with her condo and needed my help. “The kitchen backsplash decision was getting on my nerves and just wasn’t working,” she explains. “I couldn’t figure out how to pull it all together. The backsplash had me really stumped and I could not figure out what color to paint the walls,” Cathy said. Since we had worked together before on her living and dining rooms, (Houston House & Home, April, 2010 “ Finding Harmony”) Cathy knew what to expect and felt confident with my recommendations. We met at her nearby condo and had a look. Since her kitchen was small but wonderful, it just needed a few tweaks to make it spectacular. With one meeting, followed by a few emails, we transformed her condo kitchen. “You made it so easy,”

BEFORE (above): It was easy to see how small this condo kitchen was and how much it needed a smooth-flowing color scheme with the adjoining living/dining room. AFTER (top of page): Because the kitchen was diminutive, function and color flow was important.

26

she exclaimed. “The more I had looked at tile, the more confused I became about what I wanted,” she explained.

This agony went on for about six weeks until Cathy contacted me for help. “What a relief! You shuffled through my stack of 59 tile samples, selected just the right one, and we were on our way,” Cathy said. “I was very excited about it and was also relieved to be rid of my indecision.” TIP: Your eyes will first go to the lightest

and darkest items in a photograph. Using fruit and flowers to create contrast with neutral paint and tile often gives you the most bang for the buck and helps for resale, too. To expand the small room visually, I recommended that she have her contractor, Gus Lemus Residential Services, paint the flat walls in her kitchen to match the already-painted cabinets, which were painted in Pratt & Lambert Downy Gray #2255 satin enamel. This color coordinates beautifully with the Cadet Gray # 2243) flat wall paint in the adjoining living and dining rooms. I also noticed the door of her fridge opened the wrong way, increasing her frustration level because she had to walk around the fridge to open the door. Gus switched the hinges — an easy fix. From the number of tile samples she had gathered, we chose a backsplash tile from Home Depot — MS International Crema Ivy Bamboo Stone Pattern Mosaic Polished Marble. It looks great with her existing Bianco Mineral Formica solid surface counters installed by Lowe’s and her Blanco under mount sink and Blanco faucet purchased online at www.ebay.com. The oilrubbed bronze pulls and knobs are from Bering’s Hardware.

BEFORE BEFORE (above right): The lack of a backsplash wall behind the desk led to unsightly marks on the surface, while the area behind the top of the refrigerator was lackluster; the refrigerator door opened the wrong way.

28

AFTER (top of page): Flipping the hinges and restyling the top of the fridge was easy and made a huge difference. Adding the tile backsplash to the desk not only balanced the room but keeps the pencil cup from marring up the wall, too.

TIP: Cabinets don’t have to stand out.

Sometimes painting them the same color as the wall can make them “disappear” in a small kitchen.

AFTER (left): Walls that match the cabinets contrast now with the new Home Depot backsplash tile. The existing countertop and sink contrast with the new backsplash and existing wood floor.

BEFORE (below): A twotone diagonal backsplash and a total lack of fireproof tile along the washer/dryer wood wall enclosure did not meet code; the walls needed lightening with paint.

To increase the storage in the kitchen, Gus installed chrome pull-out drawers from Container Store inside the cabinets to the right of the washer dryer. “The pull-out shelves have lowered my frustration level and probably my blood pressure, too,” she smiled. I gave Cathy the name of my great tile installer. The professional installation included wrapping the tile completely around the pass-through wall above the sink as well as extending the tile beyond side of the washer/dryer cabinet and to form a backsplash on the existing desk. “The tile looks fantastic and is so easy to live with. I really liked your idea of tiling up the wall and around the

pass-through and behind the desk. Nothing was difficult and the project went so quickly and smoothly,” she explained. She was confident it would turn out after the success of her living/dining room project. “My family and friends say they love it, even the ones who don’t mind telling me if they don’t like something,” Cathy said. “I definitely recommend professional design help. I would probably still be wondering what backsplash to put in without your input—never mind all of the small touches that make such a big difference,” she smiled.

• Get creative. Covering the entire wall around a pass-through with tile adds style and impact. • Sometimes the most effective strategy is not to gut your kitchen but to first rethink the pieces that are already paid for.

or years, the only way to build a room addition was with two-by-fours and concrete or bricks. Most people still believe that, since it’s the way the rest of their house is built. That may have been true in the past but today there’s another, more exciting, practical and beautiful solution. When man first started building shelters to protect him from the elements he didn’t have access to today’s modern glass technology. Today, we have mastered the art of float glass and microscopic coatings that can improve the thermal efficiency of glass to make true, year-round living possible in a room of glass. Four Seasons Sunrooms and windows have an exclusive CONSERVAGLASS SELECT™ with Stay-Clean Technology, a product that enables you to heat and cool your new sunroom, as well as, maintain its cleanliness. Thousands of people just like you have been doing just that with dramatic and extraordinary success in the more than 30 years we’ve been in business. A year-round addition or windows from Four Seasons Sunrooms & Windows can open up a world of experiences for you and your family; while helping to give you a quiet, safe and climate specific environment. We are a perfect fit for every homeowner. We have exactly what you're looking for, with a vast selection of windows and doors including double hung, casement, sliding, awning, bow & bay windows, as well as, sliding doors, French doors and single doors. Finding the Interior Design for You

Whether you are a new to your home or you’ve been there for years, developing a successful interior design that genuinely suits you takes a creative eye and a

practical approach. Many of us are thoroughly capable of buying furniture, art and accessories that we like, but making visual sense of all those elements in a three-dimensional setting is quite a trick. Interior Designer and longtime design instructor Chandra Stone shares valuable insights for finding the design aesthetic that suits you and your home. “First, I always like to honor the design style of the house, says Stone. “Is it a cottage or bungalow? Is it a Mid Century renovation? It is a townhouse with a loft concept? Is it a ranch style home? There is usually a strong reason an individual, couple or family chooses a particular home. Sometimes it’s the schools or other location-driven reasons, but the house itself has a character and it is important to honor that.” Magazines are always excellent sources for design direction. The articles and advertisements provide photos featuring a wide range of interior design concepts, from entire homes to individual objects and textures. Like many designers, Lynne T. Jones, ASID, asks clients who don’t have design style preferences at the beginning of a project to look through different home and lifestyle magazines. “I suggest

they tear out pages of either rooms or items that they like, says Jones. “After viewing several pages, combined with reviewing their existing furnishings, I can usually determine their design style or taste. I can also usually determine their design style by their preferred style of dress. It’s amazing how much fashion and interiors are related.” “When I have the opportunity to look over photos a client has pulled out of design magazines, I find there is usually a common theme or style,” says Chandra Stone. “They will tend to select similar objects or finishes. One client did this and made a vision board of sorts and then gave me copies of those collages so that I could refer to them while planning her kitchen. So many aspects of interior design are visual, so get it out of your head and collect pictures and samples of things that make you happy.” INQUISITIVE APPROACH

Another strategy is to hone in on your design preferences by asking a series of questions. Designer Lynne T. Jones begins with a thoughtful list of questions. She says: “I ask, for example, ‘How do you like to entertain, formal or casual? Do you have any family antiques that play an important role in your room furniture arrangement? Do you like vintage pieces or would you prefer that everything be brand-new and the latest trend? Do you prefer clean lines on furniture or do you really prefer pieces that are more ornate? How do you feel about rustic pieces? What type of art are you drawn to? Do you have children or pets? Will they play a major role in the design style of the home?’” Designer Saba Jawda asks her Marie Flanigan Interiors combined organic and geometric elements in this master bedroom.

clients both conceptual and practical questions to help give a project direction and momentum. She asks clients questions, such as “What do you envision? What purpose do you wish for it to serve? What colors and/or styles do you normally gravitate to? What is your objective and lifestyle need? What is your budget and timeline for this project?” SHOWCASE THINGS YOU LOVE

“Many homeowners accumulate art and furnishings over the years through traveling or collecting pieces that have significant value,” says Jawda. “The best way to approach this is to first narrow down what they can’t be without, then the designer can help with both rearranging the pieces or figuring out which to replace or sometimes one item can simply move to another room.” “Get rid of anything that makes you mad or sad or in some way annoys you,” says Stone. “Remove accessories and art from walls and shelves, etc. and gather all items in one area. One of my designer friends tells clients to then select only 12 items—the 12 thing that mean

the most to you. Those become the basis for the look of the space. Place those items first, and then fill in with the rest or get rid of what doesn’t work.” SHARED STYLE

“It's a great combination to mix masculine and feminine pieces to complete the look of the home,” says Jawda. “It will add depth to the space, so working together with both sexes is always great.” “It’s not always easy to get couples to agree on a unified look throughout their home, especially with a blended family, where each person is bringing quite a bit to the table,” says Jones. “I think in any instance, ‘compromise’ is the mantra to help couples realize their ultimate goal: a nice home and living environment.” When tastes don’t overlap, Jones suggests separate spaces for displaying certain collections of each partner’s things. “Perhaps the husband’s hunting hobby isn’t strongly embraced by the wife,” says Jones. “In such cases, I encourage the husband to keep his trophy deer heads and stuffed ducks to a mini-

Neutral palettes are easy to manage, but what about bold colors? “Strong and festive colors are just as easy to work with as long as you know the purpose of the space and what you want to use it for,” says Jawda. “Accent walls and textures add so much more excitement that basic neutrals.” “I thrive on color,” says Stone. “Experiment by using small amounts of color that will pop. For instance, go to a retail store and pick up pillows of different colors and see what happens when you put them on the neutral sofa.” Harmony is important as well. “I like color palettes to flow smoothly through a home, so it is unified, but it is good to break that up with items that stand out. It is often wise for resale to stick to neutral finishes, but the accessories can be in bold colors.”

Why hire an interior designer? A designer brings much more that swatches and samples to the table. According to the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), many interior designers offer consultation services. Some designers charge a flat fee, and some charge by the hour. Mid Century Modern By Sandra Cook Photos by Yoonchul You of StudioMET Architects

fter more than a year of searching, Wes and Aimee Yuan bought a small, older home on a quiet cul-de-sac in inner-loop Bellaire. The existing house was occupied by rental tenants, which enabled the Yuans some time to choose an architect and draw up plans for the house that they would later live in. Wes and Aimee had initially hoped to purchase a home that could be renovated and updated, but never found a viable property that both fit the Mid Century styling they desired and could be adapted to today’s energy efficiency standards. In January 2009, shortly after they purchased the property, The Yuans approached StudioMET Architects to discuss the design of their home. The architectural firm, known for modern styling and thoughtful design, grew out of the Houston-based homebuilder Metropolitan Design Group Inc. (MDGI). The successful builder spun off

The low-profile of Wes and Aimee Yuan’s one-story home in Bellaire features a gated carport combined with a garage to provide a welcoming breezeway along with secure storage. Angled transom widows were added to the original design to allow views of the majestic oak tree from the kitchen and living area. “It lets in a lot of natural light and gives a nice connection to nature,” says Aimee.

StudioMET in 2007 to focus on custom projects. The couple had admired StudioMET’s work on numerous AIA tours and hoped the firm could help them make their dream home a reality. Architect Stephen Andrews was pleased to take on this particular design journey with the Yuans, admitting he personally identified with the couple’s goals. “This is definitely a house I can see myself living in.”

Mid Century Modern homes the Southern California resort town is known for. “We didn’t necessarily want an exact replica of a 1950s Mid Century Modern, but something that suggested that,” says Wes. “We gave StudioMET a list of 25 things that included not just features, but also some of the feelings we wanted the house to evoke,” says Wes. “That was the genesis of the project.” Wes and Aimee’s No. 1 design requirement was to have a one-

“We both gravitate towards contemporary modern homes,” says Wes. “Something that’s not too frilly, something clean, not cluttered, but warm.” Aimee, an engineer, and Wes, an attorney, wanted to create home that they would truly enjoy. A vacation with family to Palm Springs, CA a few years back resulted in the couple’s fascination with the look of the many

Various wood tones unify the dinning area and kitchen, and provide a welcoming environment for dinner-table conversation. Exquisite walnut cabinetry, custom-built by Sandy Kay of Stonewood Studios, delivers both storage and natural beauty. The entry tile, Carrara marble countertops and grey-backed glass tile backsplash subtly underscore the grey theme.

story home and the couple asked for a cohesive kitchen/living/dining space to facilitate gatherings with family and friends. They also wanted exposed beams in the main room; similar to the beams they had seen in those stunning Palm Springs homes. The couple requested at least three bedrooms for their home and expressed interest in the idea of a carport, but Aimee and Wes were certain they wanted an enclosed garage for secure storage. Architect Stephen Andrews took the list of desired features and

The pale brick, sourced from Lakewood Brick in Colorado, provides earthy warmth to the main living and dining areas. The Yuans chose furnishings in soothing neutrals to complement the views of the outdoors. The exposed beams are painted grey and are actually accented by the grey-toned grout in the fireplace. Aimee adores how the fireplace “captures that inside-out feel we loved from Palm Springs.”

qualities of the home and initially focused on the priorities and major elements, such as the one-story plan and combination kitchen/dining/living area. “They gave us a realistic and achievable list of ingredients,” says Andrews. “This was a huge help to get the design process off to a good start.” He admits some clients aren’t as organized and don’t have any details to help get the design going, while other clients have such a wildly varied wish list that their expectations are unrealistic. “They nailed the design,” raves Wes, remarking that Andrews’ first presentation of the plans for their home was right on target. “They really got it,” he says. The Yuans both agree their new home is a great change

some of the feelings we wanted the house to evoke. That was the genesis of the project.” 63

“A great thing about the design is the shape of our home. The shape is deep, from three-story townhome the lived in previously. The well thought out, one-story home is ideal for the couple, which recently had their first child. The four-bedroom, three-and-half-bath plan accommodates the young family and their guests quite comfortably. “A great thing about the design is the shape of our home,” says Wes. “The shape is deep, drawing you back, rather than shallow and wide, making you feel boxed in.” “When we were in Palm Springs we really enjoyed that you could walk outside and still feel it was part of the house; we wanted that indoor-outdoor flow,” says Aimee. “We really love the wall of sliding doors along the living area to be able enjoy our outdoor space.”

White Carrara marble has long been a favorite of Wesley’s. “People frequently ask if we’re concerned about staining,” says Aimee Yuan. “I usually reply, ‘well, they’ve use it in Italy forever, so it should be fine.”” The marble may take on a patina, but it can be maintained with minimal effort.

FORM & FUNCTION

The Yuans design preferences also helped StudioMET develop an energy- and space-efficient home. “Mid Century Modern actually lends itself very well to our climate conditions — more than a white stucco box,” says Andrews. “The low-profile roof is one thing that really helps this house be efficient, and the carport allows breezes to come through the whole outdoor space.”

drawing you back, rather than shallow and wide, making you feel boxed in.” More graceful greys bring harmony to the entire space. Here, the grey veining in the marble highlights the exposed beams. The rich hue of the custom walnut cabinetry dresses up the well-functioning work zones of the kitchen.

A TPO roofing material (short for thermoplastic polyolefin) was selected for the gently sloping roof. This energy efficient roofing systems helps moderate electricity bills. “We kept getting the bills that first summer and wondered if they were prorating us or something because they were so low, only around $100 and never over $200.” The front of the home faces south, so the majority of windows and glass doors face east to take in moderate morning light, while

more of the solid walls face the west’s more intense rays. In spite of the home’s being located quite near a railroad line, the Yuans find the noise is not distracting or overwhelming. The railway and its required right-of-way actually provide a wind channel for breezes to flow freely. The couple says they appreciated the relationship between MGDI and StudioMET, because of the architects’ experience with construction. They felt it yielded a practical, doable design, rather than an unrealistic, budget-busting design. The Yuans neighbors have praised the project as well, especially their choice to build a one-story house. As the framing went up and the structure took shape, the neighbors began commenting

on the one-story height. “They were very pleasantly surprised,” says Wes. “We hear over and over: ‘Thank you for building a one-story.” And at just over 2,900 square feet, the Yuans say they have more room than they need.

The deck area was originally envisioned as concrete flatwork (a series of staggered slabs), but the final choice was to go with a deck. “We actually really love the deck. It gives a good transition to the lawn, rather than the flatwork,” says Wes. The result yields a view that starts with the smooth walnut floors inside, goes to the rougher texture of the ipe decking and then onto the green lawn.

The distinctive wood grain of the custom walnut drawers shows off the artistry of nature. Aimee’s jewelry cases also lend an artful touch to this functional space. The master bath is connected to the closet, which features no cumbersome doors to impede the couple’s dressing routine.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS YEAR’S LIGHT BULB REVOLUTION This page: Kichler’s Design Pro LED Linear series offers flexible, easy-to-install, 1/4-inch profile fixtures that can be installed just about anywhere. Photos courtesy of Kichler Lighting.

We’ve put together a guide to help you make the switch to the ultra-energy saving lighting solutions required by federal law. Back in 2007, the U.S. Department of Energy issued new energy efficiency standards for fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, and in December 2007 the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) was signed into law. The law requires manufacturers to produce certain reflector bulbs and other household light bulbs that meet or exceed the new energy efficiency standards as stated in EISA. Bulbs must meet new minimum Lumen perWatt (LPW) requirements, so traditional incandescent bulbs are being phased out and new, more energy efficient bulbs that produce attractive, fully dimmable light will replace the familiar incandescent bulbs.

Innovations in decorative and energy-efficient ceiling fans include DC motor ceiling fans, Energy Star-qualified fans, and fans engineered especially for use in wet locations such as around pools and in patio areas. Kichler’s DC motor fans operate 70 percent more efficiently than fans with standard AC motors. Plus, they operate at a cooler temperature for a longer life. IN A NEW LIGHT

Bulbs being phased out include incandescent household, reflector, and linear fluorescent bulbs. Between 2012 and 2014, some of these bulbs will be discontinued and will be replaced by more efficient versions. You will still be able to purchase incandescent bulbs — they just need to be more efficient. Bulbs are now labeled with their Lumens per Watt (LPW) output. This is an expression of how many lumens are put out by a light bulb, versus to how much energy (wattage) we put in. The light bulb that produces the greatest number of lumens per one watt of energy is the most efficient bulb (much like a car that can travel the furthest distance on a single gallon of gas is the most fuel efficient car). The new generation of energy efficient bulbs and lighting solutions includes LED (light emitting diode) lighting, Compact Flourescents (CFLs) and Halogen Incandescent bulbs. See chart, page 72.

MAKING THE SWITCH

Many manufactures have already embraced these energy efficient technologies and offer a wide array of bulbs. It helps to get familiar with the basics and then visit with an experienced lighting consultant at a lighting store to determine the best solutions for your home. LED bulbs provide some of the most energyefficient lighting available. LEDs are especially popular for under-cabinet and in-cabinet lighting. Kichler’s Design Pro LED series, named a Top 10 New Green Product at the 2010 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show, uses advanced technology, taking LED a step further than most manufacturers to deliver high brightness, a cooler operating temperature and superior color rendering LED. “Lighting has become a significant portion of home remodeling projects,” says Ann Morgan, who oversees Builder/Designer Services for The Lighting Gallery. “The homeowners deciding to remodel are remodeling the kitchen/breakfast room and master bathroom. Most of these areas become out-of-date quickly in this ever-changing market.”

Morgan also says that improper lighting can affect paint choices, granite choices and cabinet staining choices. “For more brilliant true-color lighting for under-counter lighting in a kitchen application are the newer Xenon slimline lights,” says Morgan. “They come in a variety of lengths and compliment granite with beautiful true spectrum lighting without distorting color.” Xenon under-cabinet lighting provides brilliant light to countertops and other work and display areas. This low-voltage, energy-efficient, option lasts four times longer than traditional halogen lighting. “A lighting technician can help with those selections for proper lighting,” says Morgan, who also notes that recessed lighting is preferred to the fluorescent overhead ceiling lighting. “The new HaloXen bulbs for recessed can lights are being used because of their long-life and they save up to 35 percent in energy costs, compared to regular incandescent light bulbs,” says Morgan. “It is a crisp white light not the yellow or "blue-ish" light you can get from some compact fluorescent bulbs”. HaloXen bulbs use a special mix of halogen and xenon gases for higher Lumens per Watt output, elevated color temperature and long life. These bulbs outperform and outlast incandescent and standard halogen, turn on instantly, are dimmable and mercury free. “Master bathrooms are the No. 2 room on the list for remodeling,” says Morgan. “Depending on the finishes in a bathroom, such as faucet selection, paint, tile and granite, you can select the wall sconces and decorative fixtures such as a chandelier or fan in the bathroom that will best compliment the decor. All of our lighting consultants have a combined 75 years of experience in helping the client achieve the right look and style.”

HI, I’M R-JAE. I’m an athletic, playful pup looking for a best friend. I’m 7-month-old Shepherd mix, so I really, really, really wanna find a fetch buddy – you throw the toys, I’ll do the fetching ‘til both our tongues are hanging. And I’d love a running buddy, too. I’m always looking for someone to play chase. I’ve chased after hundreds of squirrels, but they don’t ever chase back, I wonder why? So, if you’re one of those outdoorsy types who likes going to the park, or cool places like the Boneyard, I know we can be the best of friends. I’m still a pup, so you may have to teach me a few rules and stuff, but I promise to make you laugh every day. Oh yeah, and when we’re both good and tired, I’ll show you I’m a champion snuggler. I’m ready, are you ready? Come down to HSPCA and check me out. ID# 155335 HOUSTON SPCA 900 Portway Drive, Houston 77024, 713.869.SPCA (7722) Open daily, www.houstonspca.org
